Are Americans Too Weird for Science?
A lot of psychology studies have been based on Americans (and other Westerners) over the years. But recent studies involving games and even optical illusions suggest that some cognition may be cultural and not universal. And that Americans are exceptional in their ways of thinking even among Westerners.
Without measuring which of these corners is longer?
If you said the first one, you're probably an American and almost certainly from a Western country. If you said they're the same size, you just might be a redneck San tribesman from the Kalahari. Or an American who has seen this trick before. Although the possibility of a Bushman in an American suit can't be ruled out.
So given this much of a difference from a single image how much about human psychology do we really know?
It is not just our Western habits and cultural preferences that are different from the rest of the world, it appears. The very way we think about ourselves and others-and even the way we perceive reality-makes us distinct from other humans on the planet, not to mention from the vast majority of our ancestors. Among Westerners, the data showed that Americans were often the most unusual, leading the researchers to conclude that "American participants are exceptional even within the unusual population of Westerners-outliers among outliers."
Yep we're not quite like most of the world - we're special, we're outliers, we're the Group W of countries. And yet people risk their lives daily to sneak into our asylum.
Just substitute America for Italy and take the extra vowel off the end of the names.
Italians born in 1970, who are about 43 now, will pay 50% more in taxes as a percentage of their lifetime income than those born in 1952, according to research from the Bank of Italy and the University of Verona. The research also found they will receive half the pension benefits that Italy's 60-somethings are getting or are poised to get.
AR-15: More Than a Gun - It's a Gadget
A pretty fair article from Wired on why the AR-15 has become so popular among American shooters in recent years.
Preppers, militia types, and SEAL Team 6 wannabes are certainly represented in the AR-15's customer base. But fringe groups don't adequately explain the roughly 5 million "black rifles" (as fans of the gun tend to call it) that are now in the hands of the public. No, the real secret to the AR-15's incredible success is that this rifle is the "personal computer" of the gun world. In the past two decades, the AR-15 has evolved into an open, modular gun platform that's infinitely hackable and accessorizable. With only a few simple tools and no gunsmithing expertise, an AR-15 can be heavily modified, or even assembled from scratch, from widely available parts to suit the fancy and fantasy of each individual user. In this respect, the AR-15 is the world's first "maker" gun, and this is why its appeal extends well beyond the military enthusiasts that many anti-gun types presume make up its core demographic.
...Users can change calibers by swapping out barrels, bolts, and magazines; they can add and remove accessories like Trijicon optics, Surefire flashlights, or Crimson Trace laser sights; they can swap out the rail system on the gun's fore-end to accommodate more or fewer accessories; they can change grip styles and stock sizes to tailor the gun to fit their own body; they can even theme the gun with special paints and decals (zombie apocalypse themes are popular, but I've also seen Hello Kitty).
And don't forget that the 'black rifle' has long been the red-headed mixed-race step-child of the shooting world:
Even cowboy and conservative icon Ronald Reagan had no love for the black rifle, and didn't think it belonged in civilian hands. And when the AR-15 was targeted in the first assault weapons ban in 1994, the NRA actually lent its grudging support to the measure. (Though only after the insertion of a "sunset clause" allowing the ban to expire years later.)
...As recently as 2004, when the NSSF still had the policy of disallowing AR-15 makers to display any "tactical" imagery on the floor of SHOT, the gun industry's main annual trade show, the AR-15 could be shown off only as a hunting rifle.
Well the Amish want power tools too so manufacturers have come out with custom models that they can use:
The Amish have traditionally been farmers, but land has become prohibitively expensive to purchase, so many are turning to woodworking to earn a living. Since their homes are not wired with electricity, their table saws, drills and sanders are retrofitted with gas engines and compressed air tanks.
Court Rules Arizona Can Prosecute Sober People for Driving Under the Influence
If AZ police can detect marijuana metabolites in your blood even from weeks before, you just got yourself a DUI:
An appeals court has issued a ruling that upholds the right of authorities to prosecute pot smokers in Arizona for driving under the influence even when there is no evidence that they are actually high.
.The ruling overturns a decision by a lower court judge who said it didn't make sense to prosecute a person with no evidence they're under the influence.
.The case stems from a 2010 traffic stop in Maricopa County. The motorist's blood test revealed only a chemical compound that is found in the blood after another compound produced from ingesting marijuana breaks down.
According to testimony by a prosecution criminalist, the compound found in the man's blood doesn't impair the ability to drive but can remain detectable for four weeks.
.However, the Court of Appeals sided with prosecutors who appealed, saying that allowing the testing for marijuana's active compound would unduly restrict law enforcement.
7 Obscure, Remote and Super-Geeky Military Bases
Out in the barrens of the Aleutian island of Shemya, 1,200 miles west of Anchorage and 200 miles east of Russia sits an airfield that's so obscure not even the Air Force bothers to keep up a permanent presence of their own personnel, instead paying for a small team of contractors to keep the place from literally falling apart in the harsh Arctic climate. But since 1977, the base has also been home to the massive Cobra Dane ballistic missile radar, a phased array early warning system designed to spot Soviet missile launches over the North Pole, and track launch tests in eastern Russia....But Cobra Dane is pointing the wrong way - toward the west and toward the Kamchatka Peninsula, not toward the south where the U.S. carries out its tests at Kwajalein.
On the other hand, that puts Cobra Dane at Eareckson in a position to monitor North Korean rocket launches, even though the radar is outdated compared to more advanced SBX radars mounted on floating platforms. The Pentagon doesn't have plans to scrap the radar, either. On the contrary, it's paying Raytheon $65 million for maintenance and engineering work on the radar through 2015.
Sweden: 'Infidelity Checks' Not Rape
Or rape-rape as long you don't break the vjay plane apparently. Or maybe not. Those scandis sure have a lot of rules about stuff.
A Swedish court has ruled that a 28-year-old man who ripped off his girlfriend's trousers and underwear to perform an "infidelity check" is not guilty of rape or any other sex crimes.
The man had previously been convicted of rape by a lower court after he tore off his girlfriend's clothes and forced his fingers into her genitals on suspicion that she had been unfaithful, legal trade publication Dagens Juridik reported.

This country is, and has been, unequalled in the planet's history.
Thus it is incumbent on US to work as hard as possible to ensure America remains the standard of the world.

This was, of course, before I had any clue what they did in that desert.
Once, I found and brought home a blood-spattered box of empty test tubes. Got buzzed by a helicopter on the way home. Dad used the test tubes to store small screws and things.

The term "War of Northern Aggression" comes from the fact that after the South declared it's independence. Federal troops refused to leave sovereign SC territory, Ft Sumter, in a clear attempt to provoke SC. SC asked several times for the troops to leave, Lincoln refused in a clear attempt to occupy SC territory.
SC troops after warning the garrison at Ft Sumter, destroyed it.
No CSA troops ever invaded the North, until Lee's Gettysburg disaster. The first act of the Federal troops was to invade VA and attack Bull Run.
That did not work out too well for them. They were defeated and the Southern troops, who could have marched straight into Washington and taken over the government, stayed in VA.
If we had marched in, hundreds of thousands of Americans would not have died.
OK, we messed up.
Sorry you won yet?

Went to a local bar the night of our recent blizzard, and their kitchen was closed. They had one bartender for about 10 people. I knew her, so she made me martinis with the excess in the shaker next to the glass to top off my drink. I realized after I couldn't drive home that I had drunk most of a bottle of gin.
I slept well, after i got over the fright of my wife driving my car in a snow storm.

'Ron/'Ette 1: But, sir/or ma'am (never could tell from your nic), nobody worries about upsetting a commenter.
'Ron/'Ette 2: That's cause commenters don't pull banhammers out when they lose. Ewoks are known to do that.
Fuzzy Blogger: Yub nub.
'Ron/'Ette: I see your point, sir/madame. I suggest a new strategy -- let the Ewok win.

She got really frustrated without me revving up her motor about Lush and Kurt S and the blame game...
Anyway you've been missed of course I have not been around as much either and am gonna try to be around less and it is nothing personal to anyone....

Vic is about 60 or 61 I think. He just enjoys being a curmudgeon too much and acts older than he is, although he is recovering from cancer.

Seriously You Guys, we're guests in Ace's house. When Maet has to start warmin' up the TB3K issuing subtle warnings, it's time to let it go
Posted by: AltonJackson at February 25, 2013 11:17 PM (JMmQ9)
Well to be fair my warnings were so subtle that even *I* wasn't aware I was issuing any.
But having blogged here for a while let me explain the reality from the posting side.
Blogging is hard work. Anyone can write a great post or two but producing even decent posts on a day after day basis is, well a job. A grind of a job often with less money and recognition that you'd imagine.
Most of the feedback you get only comes from comments. The people who read your post and really like it mostly just move on to something else and never even comment (occasionally a thoughtful few do send an attaboy). But the people who hated it or strongly disagree are almost certain to comment. So a lot of your feedback (10% - 50%) will be negative no matter what you write about.
Now we're all adults and this here is the intenet but continual negative feedback is a drag. Each complaining comment doesn't have much impact but multiplied by 10 or 100 every day and then you're talking about a significant headwind of painful negativity. Even planarian worms with about the simplest fucking nervous system on the planet do eventually learn to turn away from the pain. And trust me ewoks are fast learners.
So when you give Ace shit about what he posts or for not having the exact set of opinions you have, you're not slowly convincing or conditioning the ewok to give you what you want (or don't want) - you're really just adding to the headwind of hassle and aggravation. And that eventually leads to a cranky ewok who doesn't want to write anything because every post will just lead to more bitching and complaining.

My wife once told me a story, to illustrate what she did not want. An old prospector lived with his wife in a remote cabin. She cooked his meals, darned his socks, and generally took care of him, and all she ever got out of him was complaints. Finally she snapped: "Does all I do for you even matter? Do you love me?"

Heh.
There was a while when the Cycle of the Ewok was more reliable than the tides.
He'd decide he wanted the horde to get its act together and start picking up after themselves. Naturally there would be rebellion, intansigence and the usual mockery and Ace would go apeshit on the commenters, then he'd apologize. Then the apology would fall apart and he'd double down on the rage. Then he'd get all sentimental and want to hug it out.
After a nap, things would go back to normal for three or four weeks and the Cycle would renew itself.

Sure. It's easiest to imagine if you think about the consequences of raising the minimum wage to $50,000/year. All of the money for those wages would come from unicorns and pots of gold at the end of rainbows, and it would disperse throughout the economy, bringing prosperity and creating many jobs because all of these newly prosperous people would be spending all of that money, which would help businesses prosper and hire even more people. Think of it as a lunch, a lunch that you never need to pay for.

No he doesn't but unlike others, he's honest about it. Ace makes no laws so he can hate who he wants. Not everyone will like every group. The sooner society realizes this and stops reacting like cry babies when someone insults an ethnic group the better we will be as a nation.
As long as here are no discriminatory laws, people can hate who they want. The 1st Amendment protects all.

Ronald Reagan was a regular guy and once threatened to shoot a guy that was trying to mug a woman outside of his apartment (in his youth). Stopped that shit cold.
Americans used to viscerally understand the 2nd amendment, but now, our metrosexual academic betters want to disarm and psychologically castrate us, so they can sleep comfy in their beds at night.
Well, if it actually comes to the point of disarming the gun owners in this country, there will be a lot of long restless nights for those.....people. They won't understand how the government, like fire, can be dangerous when it is the master. Until too late.

In the middle of the island, the contractors poured their extra concrete into a big round blob and set a big steel ring into it. It is the "plug" and if someone pulls it, the whole island sinks (eat your heart out, Guam).
The place if overrun with foxes who get into everything. It rains up there, so the windows all have hoods over the operating sashes so the water doesn't come into the buildings.

Sometimes I am really determined to clean my windows. I use Windex and a paper towel, but I still see some streaks. So I use ammonia and wipe with a newspaper. Then I see that the outside needs doing, so I do the same there, two phases of thorough cleaning. When I'm done, that window is almost perfectly transparent. But not quite as transparent as this act of yours.

Here's a quick hint that I believe Maet would approve. Don't just bust. Don't make it a problem -- he's got plenty. Keep the tone light and humorous. And for God's sake, don't rant on and on.
For example -- "one of Pixy's hamsters needs a crash cart, stat! I think it got some bad hamster chow!" is far superior to "Why can't the blog get some real servers? Why does this always happen to one of my brilliant posts where I demonstrate your utter incompetence. Y'know, real blogs have ampersands. This is almost as depressing as one of your health scares...."
One of the things that makes this such a wonderful place is that it works live, on the high-wire, without a net. And, when you think about it, Ace is freakin' amazing with it -- and everyone in the field who really does this knows it, from Instapundit to Allahpundit, Driscoll to AB (PBUH), Michelle Malkin to Jeff Goldstein....Ace has Got. The. Chops. And he's got the wildest, wooliest, rootin'-tootin' best community on the web, from the cobs down to the lurkers.
So, yeah, bust his chops -- rasslin's the game around here -- but remember that he's 99-44/100% right out-the-gate for being amazing, and gets the rest for owning the blog.

I came back to join my fellow morons and not be "butthurt" as one commenter above suggested.
I arrive to find that the meme that I complained about a thread continues unabated.
So, let me set the record straight, being that I am, now, pretty friggin butthurt.
I entered a thread and expressed my surprise that the fight was still going on. I did so with a simply "This. Still? Oh Dear Lord"
and... as I was typing my next comment, joining in the thread, Ace essentially tells me to GTFO if I don't like the thread.
It was unwarranted and completely lacking in perspective.
Then, he continued to play the role of bully and drag my name out again to state how he hoped that I was reading over at HA.
There is always infighting amongst family and this little internet family is no exception, but when one is falsely accused of something and then the host and, dare I say it, a few sycophants join in to perpetuate the bullshit...
well yeah.... I get a little "butthurt".
You guys are wonderful, well, most of you, and I have admired Ace's wit and talent now for 10 years.
Sometimes, however, it's best to move on or take a break and perhaps that time for me is now.

But even in real life if you go to the Ace Bar and Grill and complain about the drinks and entertainment most every night, I can assure you that eventually you'll be encouraged to go check out the Hot Air Diner down the street. Who knows - you might even be happier there.

So is there a 'Team NDH'?
I'd join up in a heartbeat.
Seriously though, how some folks are allowed to stay while others aren't is beyond me.
(but I am assuming this is NDH's choice and not an official banning.)
And long-time lurker recent commenter, but damn morons have short fuses these days.
Posted by: RWC at February 26, 2013 12:29 AM (sqp6o)
Here's the thing about even "official banning"......it generally isn't permanent. In practice, it can be more like a "we need a vacation from each other, and I own the blog, so *pfffzzzt*." The only one I can recall that went way past that was the infamous "Chevy mid-size SUV" incident. Ace is forgiving to a point that is actually more-than-a-little odd.
Sadly, though -- some people never come back. It's not because they can't, it's because they won't. They may never even be formally banned at all.
Now I mentioned earlier that Ace does his thing live, without a net -- as do we all, in the comments. And, as Jeff Goldstein has gone on about, there is a reason that it is important to focus more on what speakers intend, rather than what listeners understand -- because otherwise you end up with "death words" or words that some people can say and not others, or punishment based on offense taken.
Beyond this, there is yet another level -- the meaning of the moment and what that says about lasting relationships. It's where you get dialogue like, A: "What did you say about my mother? Yours was blowing janitors for change found in seatcushions before she got to junior High." B: "What? I asked if you'd like another cookie like mom used to make...." A: "You didn't say nookie?!?.....er.....well.....yeah, thanks.....Ted.....that'd be great." B: "It's Fred.....what were you saying about seatcushions?"
The fact is that live interactions can spike well over the line of social acceptability for truly stupid reasons. Some slight misinterpretation can be escalated instead of dampened, and the next thing you know, there's broken glass and spilled drinks, blackened eyes and ruined furniture -- and possibly a few people in the hospital.....but the next Friday, sittin' at the same places on whichever of the same barstools survived -- and, perhaps a little warier for a while -- the same crowd.
Mostly.
Take one I commented on earlier, arhooley. I really miss seeing her here -- she's got a helluva wit and a nice passion. She's still well -- I've seen her posting in other places. The BH and I have even met her IRL. I'm reasonably sure that Ace would let her back in. But she'll have to ask, and for now she's moved on. A great pity. Can't blame the ewok, though -- he'd posted the rules and done the stamping ewok dance to show he was ready for battle when she walked into it -- don't know if she saw 'em, but I saw 'em.
Anyway, the short answer is that it isn't banning like it's done anywhere else -- most bannees come back.

These are apparently checkpoints set up in our interior. Interrupting travel that occurs entirely inside the US, even across state borders, without actual cause to believe those particular people have committed a crime is a violation of the fourth amendment. The checkpoints are the issue, not necessarily the particular questions asked.
This is an example of how we don't have rights because some ink on paper says so, but because we choose to assert them. If LEOs interrupt your day and harass you, the only relevant issue, as the drivers asked, is whether you are being actively detained. If not you should be free to go. Period. If so, it is their responsibility to establish the justification for their interference in your life, and once established, you should say nothing until without a lawyer present. You may roll the dice on cooperating under your freedom of speech, but if you're serious about reigning in the government's trend toward tyranny, you have to be prepared to personally put it and its agents in their place.
In any case, simply repeating the questions "Am I being detained?" and "Am I free to go?" is pretty clearly the way to go since most of the DHS bozos ultimately capitulated.

Cept your concept of "Phrase" is just so much junk.....
If you had removed "CAN" you would have been far more clear, (A prodigy of the LAUSD High School system?) Next time, snark in ENGLISH taught in a school system that is not beholding to massive 3rd world recent arrivals.
Oh, just to give you a little help there "YANK" (obviously too hard as of late)
"YOU FUCK LIKE A BROKEN SAIL!"
That is how you render a "phrase"
Now off to bed with you, pop quiz in the morning, and we all know how you suck at those.......
now where did I lay me book......

So we are, and for the time being....we are. I wish I could say something powerful and uplifting, yet I have some deep struggles of my own, trying hard not to let the "Beat Down" of the last election kill my will as you are doing the same I am sure. What is your faith in this country and the survival of it's ways? I am not of a place to say how will we stand, I only know and pray that when the time comes....we will stand....we will stand.

I know the Chinese water dragon is especially revered, if that's what your talking about. Had my boy last year, and one of the wife's clients was really excited for us, it being the year of the dragon (water dragon in this instance).
Otherwise, I am out.

My take was that Ace, (as he has done to others when they complain about content) shot from the hip over NDH's comment as it seemed to him to not as mild a complaint as NDH seemed to think it was.
He then pointed out that NDH was free to go elsewhere if content here was bothering them.
No Banning and the only other comment Ace made that I recall was that he wondered if NDH was telling anyone complaining about content at Hot Air to come here (that could've been another moron). That's what I recall.
Ace wasn't abusive and NDH didn't make any comment back but disappeared from the thread.
I think Ace was shooting from the hip but he does get that a lot and usually from concern trolls who really aren't trying to be helpful and NDH, perhaps, took it more personally than it was meant.
Sometimes a break is a good thing. I've done it. I just didn't make a point of it. Take a breather. Remember that for the most part, You don't have any idea who I am or what I'm about and neither do I about you. (you being any commenter who responds to something I say here)
If I take offense at something said, it's about 50/50 that I'm misinterpreting the level of personal animus or criticism and anyway: WHY SHOULD I CARE WHAT ANYONE THINKS?
None of you can affect my finances, my getting laid or what I'll have for breakfast tomorrow so what difference does it make what you think?
What actually matters, is the power I invest in your opinion. For those of us who comment regularly, we recognize the appearance of others that do so also. And we afford their opinion more weight than perhaps we should as we have included them in our "peer" group. But that Peer group is made up of people we don't know and for most, never spoken to or conversed personally with.
We have no idea if we'd walk across the street to piss on them if they were on fire, or not. NO CLUE.
You're all just pixels on a screen to me.
I give YOU power over my emotions, IF I WISH TO.
This should be a lesson for anyone who comments regularly anywhere; take what anyone says with a big grain of salt.
The only person who should register as more important would be the blog originator as they have more actual power.
Perhaps this is what NDH reacted/is reacting to. I dunno.
Don't stay away too long NDH. We will miss you but if you stay away too long, you will break a connection you may find had value.
But it will be too late then.
I did that with Blogmocracy and regret it to this day. No way to go back.

I have been here since Mr. Johnson over at LGF thought it best to kick my ass to the curb back in 2006? I have come and gone to this site since then and have always found this site to be the very best, not only because of the content, but because of the the most awesome commenters I have ever encountered on ANY blog site since I started posting in 2003

It had capabilities that didn't appear in PC video cards until the mid 1990's.
The HUD that appeared on STS-3 was a vector processor too, but it was very very primitive and low level (a Hughes A10INS swiped from Apache and reprogrammed). YOU had to draw all the visual elements stroke by stroke while programming X/Y rate registers and turning the gun on and off manually. All in assembler of course. Not a good time...

Windows activations codes. Even if the box is stone dead, that sticker on the side will allow you to scarf a OEM CD/DVD ISO of XP or Vista off TPB and get it activated without incident.
If you like your XP, you can keep your XP by scavenging dead PC's.

So,
The "Poppy-Seed" defence is a gone loser now?
Not that the present drug test strips could detect ANY of the current crop of designer drugs that most of the "yuts" of today are binging on and getting out of responsibilty for what would have been DUI's 5 years ago....because they ALL KNOW IT....not a problem for you all....until they kill one of YOUR kids....think about THAT shit...and wipe that smile off your face u fuckin liberal losers....this is gonna be YOUR HELL!

There's all sorts of XP and Vista ISO images on Pirate Bay torrents. Most have some sort of "hacktivator" included that will try and activate the install, but they're kinda sketchy and don't always keep working with subsequent fixpacks.
If you do a normal install, skip the hacktivation, and do a normal activation using the code on the dead PC's case, you'll be good to go. Just gotta make sure the ISO you download matches the genuine code you got on the dead PC case -- ex. You'd want an XP Home ISO for a sticker that said it was XP Home.
There's many variations MS shipped, XP Home, Pro. Vista Home, Home premium, etc. Make sure the sticker matches the install ISO.
(an ISO is an image of a CD or DVD that you'd burn)
With all the PC's being chucked now that were XP and later machines that have the activation shit (W2K and earlier NT's didn't), this is a way keep those licenses alive.
If you go nuts and try to activate dozens of machines with the same code, MS kinda notices that eventually and you have to call'em for a phone activation. You can always say you're a developer and constantly reloading different hardware configs for testing purposes as an excuse. That'll sound credible...particularly if you've D/L'd and registered a Visual Studio Express with'em (that's free).
There's so many dead boxes these days, there's really no need to try and recycle the same code over and over though. You can be legal on several boxes with unique codes without looking too hard.
I scored two XP Home x86 licenses and a Vista x64 license in one day. The two XP Home boxes were trashed/stripped junk, but the Vista X64 turns out to have a functioning dual core 2.5Ghz processor and 3G ram. It was only missing a drive. Everything else worked find.

Many just need the dust bunnies blown out of the CPU heat sink and/or power supply. Too much dust in a will cause a thermal shutdown and the machine will seem flaky.
Others may only have a dead video card who's fan crapped out and fried the graphics processor. Other may have a bad memory module in the lowest base memory that causes the BIOS POST to not be able to even run. The BIOS POST doesn't need much memory, but it does need a little bit and if that first little bit is bad the box seems stone dead.

There is not infidelity between a boyfriend and girlfriend. It is not being unfaithful... there is no promise.
A marriage is a promise. A consensual sexual relationship without the strings of law is nothing.
If the guy wants fidelity, put a ring on it and stand in front of a judge.
