I got a 30 out of 33 which ain't bad but not as good as I expected. I blame society. And the French.
Quote of the Day: Freedom is Slavery
Somehow, big food companies have convinced us that drinking a 32oz soda is a matter of personal liberty, and that the government has no place in regulating how much liquid sugar can be sold in a single container.
-- Jill Filipovic of The Guardian
We Don't Have to Outrun the Bear
We just need to stay ahead of the competition. On why the dollar is still so strong:
Now, this isn't happening because the United States is a model of good economic governance. There are times when, between fiscal cliffs, sequesters and the ever-growing piles of unfunded entitlement commitments, it looks as if Washington, DC, is doing its best to wreck the economy. But the dollar is blessed with weak competition. The euro is a disaster, the yen is a mess, and the renminbi isn't ready for prime time. Compared to the rest of the world's currency, the dollar looks pretty good; it's the healthiest patient on the floor.
The people who continually and habitually undersell the United States usually have a point when they note American weaknesses that could cause us trouble down the road. But they forget to weigh in the weaknesses and liabilities of the competition.
The Rules are Different for Obama
We've been waiting for four years for Obama's personal approval ratings to finally fall to the same level as people's ratings of the country's direction and it hasn't happened. And probably won't ever happen. As Commentary's Jonathon Tobin points out Obama seems have some special charm that appeals to people and he's too well protected by the press to ever be damaged.
So if you've staked your political satisfaction on a great Obama humbling, well maybe it's time you considered a more realistic target. Otherwise the continual disappointment may drive you into (further) derangement.
The answer to the Republican Party's problem revolves around the same factor that they failed to grasp in 2012: the president's unique appeal and popularity. After more than four years of facing off against him, Republicans should understand by now that the laws of political gravity do not apply to Obama. That doesn't mean they must, as some faint-hearted Republicans think, surrender without a fight. There is nothing wrong with the conservative principles they uphold, and House Republicans can drive a hard bargain on the deficit that demands entitlement reform if they have the guts to stick to their guns.
Obama's status as the nation's first African-American president and the consequent kid-glove treatment he gets from the press make it difficult, if not impossible, to hold him accountable for his hypocrisy or his failures. As I wrote earlier in the week, the White House's innovative strategies for manipulating the media do not fully explain his ability to evade the normal tough scrutiny that any president gets. Nor does the liberal bias of the mainstream media, though that, too, is a contributing factor.
Obama's identity as the man who makes Americans feel good about their country renders all other factors irrelevant. This is something that conservatives struggle to understand primarily because they are immune to the president's personal charm and speaking ability. But it is a fact they must accept if they don't want to spend the next four years banging their heads against a wall. That's why the GOP must stop focusing so much on trying to attack a president who is impervious to criticism and concentrate on the sort of big ideas about growth that made them the party of ideas in the '80s and '90s.
In which we spend more this year than last year and yet all government functions OMG COMPLETELY STOP!!!!
How Homeland Security Stole Michael Arrington's Boat
Sigh. I remember when we had a constitution that prohibited this kind of thing.
"Michael Arrington, founder of TechCrunch, lives near Seattle and bought a boat there. He ordered it from a company based near him, but across the border in Canada. Yesterday, the company tried to deliver it to him, and it had to clear customs. An agent for the Department of Homeland Security asked him to sign a form. The form contained information about the boat, including its cost. The price was correct, but it was in U.S. dollars rather than Canadian dollars. Since the form contained legal warnings about making sure everything on it is true and accurate, Arrington suggested to the agent that they correct the error. She responded by seizing the boat. 'As in, demanded that we get off the boat, demanded the keys and took physical control of it. What struck me the most about the situation is how excited she got about seizing the boat. Like she was just itching for something like this to happen. This was a very happy day for her. ... A person with a gun and a government badge asked me to swear in writing that a lie was true today. And when I didn't do what she wanted she simply took my boat and asked me to leave.'"
Part of wisdom is culling out the bad ideas and understanding the weaknesses in others. Making a fetish of youth also fetishizes the flaws of youth.

Short Answer: Ohio. Read the article to find out why they haven't invaded yet.

This is a story of self control and marksmanship with an itsy bitsy shooter by a woman against a fierce predator.
What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself? The Beretta Jetfire:
While out hiking in Alberta Canada with my boyfriend we were surprised by a huge grizzly bear charging at us from out of nowhere. She must have been protecting her cubs because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire with me I would not be here today!
Just one shot to my boyfriend's knee cap Was all it took... the bear got him and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It's one of the best pistols in my collection.....

Really bad idea to ask that question.
Depending on the flavor profile you are looking for, the water should be between 195 and about 205 (too hot for me, but that's what the geeks say).
Pour a bit of the water into the sink and check the temperature, then pour the water over the grounds very gently, wetting them but not floating them.
Reheat the water to the appropriate temp (it should take only a few seconds) and then add about 1/3 of the total needed for one cup. What? You make more than one cup of coffee at a time? Savage!
Add the next third when the grounds are drained (check the temp again), and again for the last 1/3.
I warned you.

Melt 2 bags of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Add 1 can of sweetened condensed milk. Combine and pour into a wax paper-lined 8x8 or 9x9 pan and put in the fridge.
This also works if you can find mint chocolate chips.

I actually met Les Aspin once, briefly, after a Fourth of July parade in Racine, WI, where a friend used to live.
Les Aspin was actually a pretty nice guy and pretty intelligent, but he was not the right man to be the executive in charge of the Pentagon. His political axe was always about how much the Pentagon spent and mis-spent. The problem with the money being mis-spent was always the way that Congress wanted to micromanage spending , and in the last couple generations of emasculated political general officers who would role on the backs to show their bellies to Congress.
Chuck Hagel is an imbecile. Really, the man is just not that smart.

Okay, I'm coming out of retirement, but just for this one comment.
Iron grampa- Man oh man- nothing like that coffee story. Mine had to have been from a Thermos on a cold morning out on one of the lakes fishing with Dad. Didn't much care for the taste at first, but the rite of passage was awesome. And I was the youngest of seven boys, so my Dad got to do that time after time. with bacon
and coffee that tastes like......America
There's a great opening scene in Hitchcock's only R-rated film, 1972's Frenzy, where you see the London Police Inspector at his Scotland Yard desk wolfing down a huge classic American/British breakfast (coffee, bacon, pancakes, bangers, toast, the works). When his assistant asks why, he explains that his wife is on a big-time "experimental" ethnic-dinner kick.
Later on, in a scene at the Inspector's office, said wife offers a visitor a Mexican "enn-chee-lah-dah." Funny.

MagPul press release:
"We are proud to announce that within a matter of days we will be going live with a new program. Due to a bill currently moving through the Colorado legislature, there is the possibility that Colorado residentsÂ’ ability to purchase standard capacity magazines will soon be infringed. Before that happens, and Magpul is forced to leave the state in order to keep to our principles, we will be doing our best to get standard capacity PMAGs into the hands of any Colorado resident that wants them."

Les Aspin was always the fall guy for that bastard Clinton and the lack of any attention to anything beyond getting his dick sucked. And that cocksucker Anthony Lake.
I know that Aspin always got dinged about allowing armor to be brought into Mogadishu, but that request was actually just prior to the Blackhawk Down incident, and would not have made any difference one way or another.
Clinton and his whole NSC team were not paying attention to anything, except being bozo mofos.

Sports talk radio is an example of how the Left has pervaded every aspect of the culture. Today I heard a discussion of how rampant homophobic homophobia is in the NFL. And that this rampant homophobic homophobia is largely due the Christian and biblical beliefs of all too many of the players. And that the NFL needs to come up with a plan to address this bigotry
-----
This is obviously related to Teo. Here's my thought. Sports teams and most players probably don't care. Sure there are a few who would rather not have a gay teammate, but I doubt many truly care. However, what they do care about is a media circus and media scrutiny. My guess is a team would rather not have a gay player on it because of the media circus it would create and not simply because the player is gay. But it makes these sports hosts feel better about themselves to blame it the homophobia, when in reality it is them and the media horde which is likely the biggest problem.

Going against 70 years of protocol and the first time since WWII, Obama orders not one but the docking of 5 naval ships together. The ships in question?
Five nuclear powered aircraft carriers were docked together.
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)
USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)
USS Enterprise (CVN 65)
USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75)
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72)
are all in port at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., the worldÂ’s largest naval station. Gee, that worked out real well when FDR did this at Pearl Harbor.

Again, I disagree. Teams saw the media circus that Tebow became. Coaches don't want to have the media so present. If any team would want to do it, I'm guessing SF (obvious), NYJ (they crave publicity), or Dallas (if you can't win, might as well do this).

both parties in fact were simply stating reality.
1) Republicans ALWAYS let the Donk President get his pick through and trust the donks to be 'fair" to GOP presidents.
2) democrats often do not and feel no shame at blocking GOP nominees and understand they can nominate all those down with da struggle....

I'd like to see a repub long game myownself, but if Hagel is incompetent then he should never be voted for by and patriot as a matter of principle.
I think I like IG's reationalization better, namely that incompetent as Hagel was, the next buffoon put forward by Obama would be a deliberate "defining incompetence down" nominee and eventually someone worse than Hagel would get in. The problem with that is it is hard to imagine a candidate more incompetent and anti-semitic than Hagel.
H is outta here--enjoy the remainder of the evening!

Hagel's confirmation is a failure of the GOP, who could have blocked him if they so chose. There were numersous reasons to block him, all valid, including simple partisan politics. I wanted him blocked mainly to boost the spirts of the base to show that you can stop Obama at one thing. It helped that you would be blocking an Israel-hating nut who is completely unqualified to run a burger king, let alone the Dept of Defense. The GOP is to blame here.

The USS Enterprise was retired from the Navy in January. It's being dismantled.
The USS Eisenhower deployed on Thursday and is on its way to the Middle East to relieve the USS Stennis, which will return to its home port on the West Coast. The Eisenhower was in port for two months to get its flight deck resurfaced.>>

The Yuan is being kept low to suck all the manufacturing jobs out of the rest of the world, the dollar is being pushed low to fund Dem corruption, the Euro is being kept high (to Greece's detriment) to try to pretend they're as successful as the US, the Yen is a storehouse of value in a society undergoing demographic collapse....

Can give you a bit of a preview of what to expect, once in the hospital. NOT fun, but at least I got it over with (and hope NEVER to see another urinary catheter again... they "install" those monsters without ANY anesthetic/drugs whatsoever).
Posted by: qdpsteve at February 26, 2013 10:37 PM (7B7jB)
If you are talking about lumbar area disk surgery, I don't think they give you a urinary catheter, but I don't really remember them doing it to me, so if they did, I was out.
Here's how my back surgery back in 2004 went:
Arrived at hospital at 6am.
Went to pre-op at about 7am.
Woke up in hospital room at noon.
Ate some lunch, walked down the hall, rocked a piss.
Wife brought the car around at 3pm.
We were eating Outback carryout at 6p at home.
By the end of the week I was walking 2 miles a day.
You may want to make sure that you take some stool softeners after surgery, cause it kinda gets real hard. The surgery is pretty much become like getting your tonsils out.

I always thought the gold leaf in food or booze was douchy enough but grinding up cloth for me to eat is even worse. At least the servants could get something of value panning my shit for gold. There's no way they have the talent to put the Benjamens back to spendable.

Cheri: they did. Not only was the food better with more variety, they had an incredible rehab gym (first time I ever met a gym I liked) and a computer room stocked with new iMacs. And the actualy PT/OT thereapists were great. Lots of good advice, never too tough on me at any time, and tailored to my needs.
Not surprising you worked there, given your good advice here. :-)
Seeing how well everything worked at LB Memorial also helped to make me a bit more scared of what folks may be in for with Obamacare. Sad to think that level of care, thoroughness, and wide-ranging expertise may be endangered.

This is one notion on how to sell Spanish-speakers on immigration control:
Tell the old matriarchs, who were brought in by their sons, and who actually watch Univision - that all those illegal immigrants are going to take jobs from their kids. Which money said kids will then not be able to use to take care of mama.
The whole cross-border gangbanger issue, the matriarchs aren't going to like either; this can be played up as well.
Right now the Hispanic population is supporting amnesty because they have cousins or whatever. Tell them that it's not sustainable if every other family has cousins or whatever, from Guatemala or Chiapas rather than sorta-almost First World states like Nuevo Leon.

One thing about In-and-Out is that they "bounce" while they work. Like FedEx guys when I interacted with FedEx more often (don't know if they still do). There aren't any clockwatchers; the person that took your order might wipe your table when you're done; the fry-guys are chunkin' potatoes while the last batch is in the oil. The hipsters took over Atwater Village. Used to be able to get a normal meal at normal prices, but when I left a few years the area between Glendale Blvd and Los Feliz Blvd became all hipster niche shit. The only "normal" place was the Starbucks that used to be the carnaceria when it was all a working class hispanic and filipino neighborhood.
Little bit of curiosity .. in the weeks after 9-11, I saw all sorts of American flags in Atwater Village when it was a hispanic neighborhood, but very few around Silverlake and Los Feliz.
Los Feliz had the Hollywood types walking out on their lawns with candles on that Friday night the 14th for the "candlelight memorial"

Remember a few years ago, when the AMA said your doctor needs to know if you own any guns? I think that was the beginning of an effort to tie into Obamacare and make your doctor a federal gun control agent.
At some point, I'm sure federal regulators will declare that lying to your doctor counts as perjury, since health care is being brought under the wing of the federal government. Thus, telling your doctor you don't own a gun when you do (and your doctor will be required to ask) will be a federal crime.
And this "universal background check" that lefties are pushing now? Well, currently, background checks are initiated by the seller. If "universal background check" becomes law, then when you die, you can't will your guns to friends and family, because the dead can't initiate background checks. Thus, when you die, under Obamacare, your guns become government property, because they can't be legally transferred to an heir.

I got a little bump sitting at a light in Hamilton last Friday. She was cited. I have had several calls from medical therapy clinics, text messages from lawyers, calls from lawyers and when I checked my mail today three letters from the ambulance chasers. It is disgusting. Let's not kid ourselves. These guys are there to seduce me into milking all that I can from the insurance company. They wouldn't be doing it if they hadn't been successful in the past in appealing to man's base instinct to profit from others misfortune. We have way too many damn lawyers.

My recommendation... pick a friend you can trust. Give him a key to your home, and tell him on the sly that if anything happens to you, you want him to have your guns.
Or make some sort of equivalent plan, like telling your spouse to gather them up and bring them to someone before probate law kicks in.

IKEA is great stuff if you don't take it seriously.
As an example, we have a "mud room" where our washer and dryer live. It used to have a plastic sink, but I used IKEA cabinets and an IKEA stainless sink to make a nice little sink area.....which didn't cost that much more than a plastic sink, and worked because I punched holes through stuff like Swiss cheese.
Their stuff is great for odd mental things like "what if I need a dining-room table with a 9" hole in the middle?"

One thing lawyers don't tell you. It usually takes a few years to even get it to court, no less see the settlement $$$$
Posted by: kbdabear at February 27, 2013 01:14 AM (mCvL4)
They do let them believe that they will get every penny of it, every penny. I had an employee sue me, and his lawyer had he and his wife believing that they would get every penny of the 200K. 4 years later we finally settled for 5K. Their matching Eddie Bauer Explorers probably got re-popped after the lawyer took his cut of that 5K.

I was too. These men and women and their deputies are on the ground level and know what the hell is going on. If I were inclined to rob, home invade, or other mayhem - I would think twice before going into any business or home in GJ.
When 16, my son and a former friend of his got arrested one night because his friend broke into a guy's truck to steal the change he saw in the front seat. My dimwit of a son did nothing to stop him and therefore was an accomplice. The truck owner heard them and came running out after calling 911. I told my son that he was lucky he wasn't shot as a lot of people here are locked, loaded and they don't take robbery of their trucks too well. My son is still working off the fines I had to pay. He only wishes he was put in jail after having to deal with a very pissed off mother.

Seriously, there are a lot of reasons to love IKEA, 'cause they are really, really, really cheap -- and repurposing their stuff has much less overhead than starting with plywood. It's kind of like Harbor Freight, but Harbor Freight's gig is that stuff will cost as much as the rental fee for a professional tool.....and it'll act like a professional tool......once.

in fact, the ordinance says that it is my responsibility to:
Remove from any such sidewalk, curbing or guttering all ice, snow, earth or other substance that in any way obstructs or renders the sidewalk, curb and gutter dangerous, inconvenient or annoying to any person.

I was under the impression that the "settlement" was where the defendant gives you the cash to make it all go away, before it gets to court.
That's what TV told me, anyway
Posted by: boulder toilet hobo at February 27, 2013 01:16 AM (QTHTd)
"Settlement" is what the insurance company figures what it will cost in fees for their attorneys to defend the case.
The ambulance chaser wants to flood that attorney with paperwork to try to push up the cost estimate, then feign ignorance at the insurance company's requests for documents during discovery. They always make their first settlement offer around the time they make their requests for discovery.

100% on civic literacy. Yay me. I actually know a little high school level history.
If you complete the test check out the link at the end comparing scores of people who haven't held elective office to those who have. Guess who consistently scored substantially lower. An example:
•Seventy-nine percent of those who have been elected to government office do not know the Bill of Rights expressly prohibits establishing an official religion for the U.S.

Now, the interesting thing is that this imprinting leaves evidence behind. To start with, most people find the people they grew up with to be sexually attractive. So if you were of Chinese extraction growing up in Brussels, you'd likely be fapping to Euro-porn. But there's also seriously strong imprinting from your first/last sexual experience.....so if your cherry got popped with a transplanted Algerian in Paris and have been living with a woman from Singapore for five years, you could be fantasizing about all sorts of women.
Being a guy, I'm trapped in this sort of whirlwind myself -- but it's quite amusing when you notice someone go "she's so beautiful" about someone who was "meh" before he banged someone who looked like her.

Hit SHOT show in Vegas in Jan, thought I'd died and gone to heaven: Vegas + guns + beer = kill me now I'm cool with it.

Zero your rifles, buy dry fire rounds for your pistols and train on those. Met this guy at SHOT:

Not for the individual, but good stuff for a Glock/AR loadout.

model, Thank You, aos commentors hate Adam Sandler movies. Yeah, some suck, but Happy Gilmore was funny!
Ben Stiller was a prick in the movie, but he stole a lot of scenes if you ask me, and Bob Barker, the homeless guy, Kevin Nealen, yeah, it was funny.

He sure instinctively leans one way, you can see that.
He has something in mind, whether it's petulance or some plan who the Hell knows. He lets Brennan run wild, but that could just be shit-stirring.

He has nothing in mind, besides milking the moment,. His backers, OTOH....
It's only a win if we don't get him back. Otherwise, it's just paying to be as screwed as we are.

I sometimes almost think I'll wake up and it will all have been some screwed up error, and then I look and he's all like "No, I won't discuss cuts, I won, you racists. Oh, and I won't answer questions, and I just released a bunch of criminals to scare the proles, fuck you."
It's like Urkel got a knock on his head and thinks he's Putin.

He behaves as if he were smart as the evil shit Soros -- and probably believes it because ValJar constantly says he is -- but he isn't within two orders of magnitude because he doesn't even realize that ValJar cashes Soros' paychecks.

For the next 4 years, our entire focus should be on how to eliminate, reduce the effects of and increase the promulgation of facts.
The State Media is the enemy and anyone who supports it by any means no matter how small or infrequent is only hurting themselves.
