Because the ONT's principal weapon is surprise and a fanatical devotion to the clock.
Gun Talk with Joe Biden: This Week's Episode - Handling Unwanted Strangers
I did one of these town-hall meetings on the Internet and one guy said, "Well, what happens when the end days come? What happens when there's the earthquake? I live in California, and I have to protect myself."
I said, "Well, you know, my shotgun will do better for you than your AR-15, because you want to keep someone away from your house, just fire the shotgun through the door."
Yes this is the man that Obama picked to be his second in command. Should the unthinkable happen I'm guessing that a President Biden would soon make history as the first president to be impeached for sheer stupidity.
Also: Biden and the Oscar Pistorius School of Self-Defense
Heh.
I've been seeing this for a few years now - kids just aren't that interested in driving or having their own cars.
The Western love affair with cars may be over. The FT reports that the number of UK teenagers taking driving tests has fallen by about 18 percent since 2007. For 20-somethings, the drop is about 10 percent. Even licensed drivers are driving less: many don't have cars, and those who do are clocking less miles. The US, Germany, and Japan are all seeing similar trends.
Well you can - but it'll cost you.
Novices often buy British Chieftains, a good starter tank because, though it weighs more than 50 tons, it is generally cheaper than a Sherman or Stuart. The Neal brothers bought theirs in 2011 for $65,000, in need of restoration. Plus, the State Department doesn't restrict imports of British armor.
...A tank in the U.S. can have operational guns, if the owner has a federal Destructive Device permit, and state laws don't prohibit it. The permit costs $200, and the applicant must swear he hasn't been a "fugitive from justice," "adjudicated mentally defective" or convicted of "a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence." A local law-enforcement official, usually a sheriff or police chief, has to sign off on the application.
But it can an expensive hobby - in more ways than one:
Lance Miller, a 41-year-old from Loudonville, Ohio, sold his elegant little Stuart, a tank famous for its service in the Pacific, for $200,000 to raise money to restore his dream tank-a 1943 Sherman. "It's sort of the pinnacle of military-vehicle collection to have a piece of armor," Mr. Miller says.
He says he has put about $280,000 into his Sherman so far and expects to spend as much as $75,000 more. "You get a tank, you end up with an ex-wife," warns Mr. Miller, who has one of each.
North Korea Now A Threat to CONUS?
According to various intelligence reports, Pyongyang conducted an engine test of its KN-08 long-range missile on 11 February, one day ahead of the nuclear test.
...The KN-08 has been called a "game-changer" for the DPRK, and with good reason. Assuming the missile achieves its projected range, the KN-08 would give Pyongyang a strike platform capable of reaching much of the CONUS. And with a mobile launch platform--supported by one of the world's most advanced denial and deception programs--the KN-08 will be extremely difficult to track and target. Among its various roles, the kN-08 could easily deliver a sudden, surprise attack against the U.S., giving the North increased leverage in its dealings with Washington, and our allies in the region.
Missile defense faster please. Also start planning Japan's welcome party to the Nuclear Club.
The Crime Wave in Atherton, CA
In case you weren't aware of it Atherton is a small city just a few miles north of Palo Alto that's usually ranked in the top 5 richest neighborhoods in the US. The median house price there is $4 million.
Years ago I used to work nearby and at lunch we used to snicker at the 'crimes' reported for Atherton in the local paper . The best one I can recall is a report of littering which turned out to be an abandoned Pentium 4 PC left on someone's driveway. But here are a few other ones to give you an idea of what the mean streets of Atherton are like.
All entertaining and best of all they're nice and short. Here's one by Terry Moore on How To Tie Your Shoes.

Why You're Fat Ladies: Not Doing Enough House Work
One reason so many American women are overweight may be that we are vacuuming and doing laundry less often, according to a new study that, while scrupulously even-handed, is likely to stir controversy and emotions.
Men Who Like Big Boobehs: You're Oppressive Misogynists Who Hate Women
The men's preference for larger breast sizes was significantly and positively correlated with hostility towards women, more sexist attitudes towards women, benevolent sexism and objectification of women. ...Benevolent sexism was the strongest predictor for breast size rating, while objectifaction of women and hostility towards women were also significant predictors.

Hey, EC. When you're in Beaufort next week for graduation, be sure and eat at Panini's on the waterfront.
Also, how was your step-son's Crucible? Our kid had what the DIs called the coldest on record. A high of 17° and the kids were wet, to boot. Our son said they refused to rest at all because they were so cold.
At School of Infantry they had snow, and our boy developed frost bite. Still enjoyed it.

Tell your wife to chill. The weather's nice, and they are playing war to the hilt.
One dumbass in our son's platoon faked a knee injury to avoid the nine mile walk back. He was bumped back a couple of months.
Our son said when they arrived at the Iwo Jima statue, and the DIs presented their Eagle, Globe and Anchor insignias (I have his), they all had tears streaming down their faces. Then they got cleaned up and had steak and eggs for breakfast. And they were officially Marines. I still tear up thinking about it.
We ate at a place a couple of blocks away from the waterfront that was excellent. Dark and candle-lit. The Best Western will give you all sorts of PI info and a list of restaurants. There are several great places to eat.

Kids get their asses hauled all over town by mommy these days - even after they turn 16. Me, I was thrilled to get my license at 16 because it meant I didn't have to take the bus all the time.
I also wonder if the lessened teen interest in cars isn't also due to the fact that teen age boys don't tinker around under the hoods like they used to - the engines have become too high tech. I remember walking through my neighborhood on a nice Saturday afternoon and it seemed like every teen boy I knew, including my brothers, was messing around with their cars. You just don't see that anymore. Those boys I knew drove old rustbuckets around - but they worked on them, they had shelled out 300 or so hard-earned bucks for them, and so they loved those cars and wanted to drive any chance they got.

This. A lot of kids no longer pay for a car. Mom and dad shell out for the car, gas, insurance, etc. I got a car for my 18th birthday, but I had to pay for the insurance and the gas and any repairs. Thus, I had to find a job. A lot of kids nowadays don't want to work, or they can't work, because it interferes with their preplanned life.
Combine that with the way that the internet has removed the need to go anywhere to shop or meet friends or generally have a life, and suddenly they're not interested.

You can still change the intakes (cold air intakes, bigger throttle bodies, bigger injectors) camshafts and exhaust (headers, X or H pipes, etc), most of the rest is done on a laptop. Lots more expensive now than when the Chevy 350 was king.

I bought the aforementioned Fiat from Dad and got really really good at jury rigging a piece of bicycle cable to stand in for a clutch cable. I'd have to drive 70 miles to order the clutch cable and then wait two weeks for it to come in, then drive 70 miles to get it. IIRC I put three clutch cables in it the two years I owned it (Dad sold it to me for $25 cause it needed a clutch cable).

Yep. Not to mention the price of gas.
I can understand the lessened interest in cars, but it's another way we're (depressingly) becoming like the rest of the world. Of course, lefties have always tried to push public transportation on us.Cars, especially in America, provide the freedom to move around across vast spaces as one wishes, instead of being one of the herd on a bus or train. It's your own individual space. That's why P.J. O'Rourke becomes almost poetic on the subject of cars. I imagine generations of American boys longed for a really fast horse for the same reason - not a good seat on the public stagecoach (if such things existed).

They're also coffins on wheels. You shouldn't hoon around in them. Used to be you could pack a band plus the equipment into an old charger, GT , monaro or whatnot and roll it. After you could just get more rum, set up the gear and play, no worries. Cars were like tanks back then.

They were bigger but not safer. I've seen crash test videos of full sized cars of the 60's that left no recognizable sheet metal, but on today's cars left the passenger cabin intact. Today's cars also have better handling, airbags, traction control, antilock braking, stiffer doors and passenger cabins, and better lighting
I love the old cars as much as anyone, but let's not romanticize them to the point of denying modern engineering advances
Not just safety, but power too. The V-6 in the base Camaro or Mustang now has 300 hp, something no V8 had in the 70s or 80s, and only the muscle cars or biggest luxury cars had in the 60s.

I will tell about my 1st car, a '47 Chev that Dad parked due to it swallowing a piston top. I was bugging about a car, so he sold me that car--either buy it or it was heading to the junk yard.
Spent an entire summer under it learning about Chevy engines--all done at my expense. All the expense came out of my pocket. Damn thing ran fine , but the first year I owned it I walked everywhere.
Funny thing, before the car, I had few friends--after, everybody claimed me as one. Solved that real quick by telling them that I didn't like them before I owned a car, and nothing had changed.

Tuna, when my sister was a home care nurse, she took care of a woman in her early 30's, a fashion model, who had pancreatic cancer (just lost someone I knew to that, and it kills you fast). My sister said this woman was really nice and it was a tragedy to see her go downhill so quickly. She also said this patient had had breast implants and it was extremely bizarre to see this huge firm boobs on what had become a skeleton body.
That made me wonder what all these women with breast implants will look like when they're little old ladies. My wager is that there is going to be some really freaky old people walking around in 30 or 40 years - huge perky boobs on elderly bodies and lots of faded tattoos on saggy skin.

Now, they're just getting broken in at 100K, many of the better built cars like Toyotas and Hondas will easily clock 300K
Oil changes no longer need to be done at 3,000 miles, and many other maintenance requirements like alignment, tires, tuneups, or parts replacement don't need to be done for a year rather than several times a year.
It's not the cars, it's the kids

I love the old cars as much as anyone, but let's not romanticize them to the point of denying modern engineering advances
Not just safety, but power too. The V-6 in the base Camaro or Mustang now has 300 hp, something no V8 had in the 70s or 80s, and only the muscle cars or biggest luxury cars had in the 60s.
Posted by: kbdabear at February 28, 2013 10:33 PM
You're probably right. But, the old ones were a lot more fun. I guess we were lucky, or something. The only serious injuries came via head ons and telephone poles. Rolls and assorted stacks didn't result in much more than a banged up car. Oh well. God, drunks, children and idiots, I guess.

We had this awesome fuckin' place, CBD. I think it was on Prospect right up from that little park (which may no longer be there). There was a lawyer office on the ground floor, this old judge and his younger partner, McQueston I think, and we had the two top floors. For, iirc, $225 a month. We could walk down to the shops and everywhere in Ridgewood. My former f-i-l used to say Ridgewood would have one of the highest per capita incomes if you guys didn't live there. He was probably right, lol. We used to go up every Sunday morning to Tice's Farms for the fresh, hot donuts and cider.

Not sure where you are, but here in the Carolinas there's a website where folks buy/sell/trade guns and ammo. I noticed tonight that some are starting to offload excess ammo. If they loaded up before the scare, they can now sell at a "reasonable" price, and still turn a profit. 1760 rds of 223 tonight for $900. Not TOO bad, compared to on-line retailers, anyway.

Unique sound to them, almost like a small plane engine or an old Chris-Craft boat. They were huge, didn't put out a lot of hp for their bulk but they had massive torque
The old Flathead Fords were loved, but they usually needed to be rebuilt at 40,000 miles

All during the 60's gas ran about 30 cents a gallon. Hi test, 35. It was leaded too, so it was the real deal.
Course, cars back then had pretty loose specs.
The cars today are fucking amazing. The engines are simply works of art.
Even the cheapest car is better built than a Cadillac in 1965.
You could never manufacturer a car in the 60's to the specs today. No computers.

That POS went through three starters, two ring gears, a full tranny, two water pumps, a carb, an alternator, and ate valve-cover gaskets like candy. Went through tires like nobody's business until some smart shop told me the factory spec was crap and it didn't need toe-in like it said in the book. The tranny, I suspect, wasn't bolted to the frame when it left the factory. Had a "variable-venturi" carb that was supposed to be the bee's knees, 'cause they'd get amazing performance from it using research-grade gasoline.....in the real world, there was this needle-valve that rapidly got glazed with impurities in gas and made the thing's performance a total crapshoot.....
I still have problems walking onto a Ford lot, 'cause I get this overwhelming desire to scream "you screwed me over, how will you ever make that right?"
Bought a Nissan Sentra that was so stripped it didn't even have a radio antenna.....in the first 12 months I owned it, my out-of-pocket for car payments and the down payment were less than the last 12 months of repair bills had been.

When she got her new one (early 90s Buick Regal that he's still driving), I told her, I know a guy who will buy that thing, top dollar. Oh, hell, no. Hah! Parents had a '79 LTD with that same fucking thing. POS would stall out for no apparent reason, and would refuse to start under certain conditions, like winter, unless you applied precisely the right amount of throttle and recited lines from the Necronomicon backwards. You could fake it out by having someone hold the venturi open until the engine caught. This worked well unless you were alone, in which case you jammed your ice scraper into the thing to keep it open, cranked the engine and the the millisecond it caught, you darted out to remove the ice scraper before it stalled again, which it would if you were so much as a half-second late.
Good times.

Yeah, that was always the problem with pot for me - going from not-stoned to completely friggin' stoned in, like, 5 seconds. Also, it always seemed to intensify my previous mood. Fine if I was in a good mood - then I'd laugh like hell at anything. But if I was depressed or sad to begin with, it didn't make me happy. I vaguely remember one ridiculous evening when I locked myself in a bathroom, sat down on the edge on the tub and blubbered away because life was meaningless or some damn thing.

I'm not really that much of a car geek, but this particular piece of stupidity took me so long to figure out that I'm kind of proud to know about it.
The whole "variable-venturi" thing is that carbs have a section where the walls pinch in to maximize air velocity and create low pressure, but engines suck more air when they're turning-over faster and less air when they're revving slower, so you're almost never at the optimum air velocity or pressure. But if you made one wall stationary and put the other wall on a piston, you could make the "pinch" bigger or smaller as more-or-less air was needed. So far, so good.
Where the engineers went overboard is that they figured "with different amounts of air, you need different amounts of fuel".....so they decided to mount a precision metal rod on the moving wall that matched up with a precision hole on the stationary wall so that if you opened the pinch-point, it'd spritz more gas through the narrow-part of the rod/hole gap, but if you closed the pinch-point, the thicker part of the rod would close up more of the hole. [If this sounds like machine sex.....]
The problem is, that's some mighty precision machinin', there....and in realsville, both the rod and the hole would become coated in a shellac-like substance formed when impure gasoline was heated and evaporated away (uh, like in a carburetor....). And, what's more, said lacquer swelled when the humidity was high (and got sticky and occasionally stopped the venturi piston in its tracks) and shrank when the humidity was low.
And now we come to the big picture. In order to keep from picking a compromise airflow venturi and sticking with the air/fuel it gave them, they varied the venturi and the air/fuel in a way that destabilized it beyond where any compromise design would take them -- making it totally useless under circumstances the standard 2-barrel and 4-barrel carbs would laugh off.
Genius!

Had the 340 which was a great engine and the car was very light so it was the fastest car I had
The reason it was light however was less due to size than the paper thin steel Chrysler used at the time. It also had the suspension of the Mopars, meaning it could fairly hold a straight line if you had new tires and a recent front end alignment.

You'll probably never see this, 3 1/2 hours later, but maybe. When my 15 year old son let his grades slip, I sat him down and pointed to the convertible parked outside. "That's yours when you turn 16" I told him, "As long as you get your grades to a certain level". When I was 16 I would have crawled through broken glass to have a car (In fact I did, metaphorically, to be able to drive the better car. Hehe, my doctor dad drove a 16 year old English Ford for about 2 years because my grades and behavior earned me the pilot's seat of the much newer VW Scirocco.
). He didn't care. His grades never came up, he never got his license, and today at 19 he still doesn't have one. He moved to Calgary a year ago for better work opportunity, and last week I was talking to him about his new apartment. "It's right on the bus line that goes to my job!", he told me excitedly. Of all the things that I don't get about my son, that right there is #1. I'm proud as hell of him this past year, he's working like a dog to support himself doing teenage jobs, so everything that I tried to teach him about a work ethic but thought I'd failed at out actually took root, but that there...baffling. Thinking about it now, I'm still gobsmackered. Honestly Bidened. I've got no clue.

when my dads 65 riviera got in an accident (yes the headlamp shades worked, no ugly lights on the grill) a Blue toyota pickup stopped in front of us on the freeway. He was smoking weed. The Riviera opened up the back wend of that toyota all the way through the tailgate and smooshed up way up toward the back window, opening it like a can opener.
that sharp nose it had was dinged in a little. and the paint scratched a bit. That was it. That was when they made cars to go fast, look gorgeous and LAST.

Or...
We could have been through a Depression and seen it fall below the horizon in the rearview mirror long ago. Without the idiocy that allowed the housing bubble things would have gotten rough during the Bush administration due to the fallout of the dot.bomb bubble but it would have been resolved within a few years in the normal course of things.
Why Alan Greenspan, who actively encouraged the housing bubble to put off dealing with the previous bubble bursting, isn't burned in effigy at Tea Party and OWS gatherings alike tells me the average American hasn't a clue to the level of malfeasance at the top.
We keep putting it off and the tumor just gets bigger. When first diagnosed the doctor said he had to cut off a pinky on the left hand to remove the tumor and allow life to continue normally. But that would be painful and inconvenient. So the tumor grew and soon had twins on the other fingers of that hand. Then up to the wrist, then the forearm, up to the shoulder, and just kept going. It was never time for the surgery because the thought of the pain was just too much compared to living with the increasing burden of the tumor and its offspring.
Someday soon, a massive 400 pound tumor is going to ooze into a surgeon's office to find out about getting this pesky American voter hanging off its side removed so it can have a normal life.

Posted by: epobirs at February 28, 2013 09:03 PM (kcfmt)
They can't.
See, we're screwed because they can't keep running up the debt without blowing the bond market all to hell. Sure the Fed can buy new debt, but there's $13 trillion or so held by other people who may decide they don't want it because the post inflation dollars it will be paid in aren't worth the bother. The fed can't buy all of those if any significant portion get dumped on the market, because you'd have instant, massive inflation. Also, deficit spending in and of itself causes inflation because it creates false demand, and those dollars eventually trickle into everything.
On the other hand, with some mild variation, they have to deficit spend by an exponentially increasing amount to keep GDP from contracting in a very apparent way. Also, because all money enters the system as debt (by design) debt has to get paid off at a rate (very roughly) proportional to the amount of cash floating around at any given time (or, rather what was around at the average time the debts were incurred), the Fed absolutely must continue emitting exponentially higher amounts of cash, or the monetary system collapses to a singularity. And with not much of anyone running up their credit cards (because they already did so) or taking other debt out, about the only place that money can go right not is through the federal government into student loans (which are defaulting at an increasing rate because half of all graduates can't find jobs) or general spending.
The balance between these two is an ever thinner blade. Eventually someone will slip.

Socialist-wants to destroy your freedom for your own good. Really.
Communist-wants to destroy your freedom for the good of "the working man" all around the world. Doesn't think much of your country, either.
Marxist-catch all for satanic political systems not counting islam. Wants to destroy your freedom because it's the wave of the future.
Fascist-wants to destroy your freedom for the good of your country's working man by keeping businesses in line or something. Likes the version of your country he sees in his imagination.
Corporatist-wants to destroy your freedom for the good of the largest businesses (ie who can bribe him best). Initially likes his version of your country, eventually sees borders as an annoyance because "trade!"
Statist-wants to destroy your freedom because he can.
Note that while these all have the same dictatorial end state, these groups will generally all hate the others, unless Marxism is currently considered cool, in which case they get invited to all the after parties.

Between that link and Amity Shlaes' The Forgotten Man, it all comes into focus. Half-assed plans get more and more improbable until people go, "this ain't gonna work" and the whole thing ends up in the shitter; everyone cries for the government to do something; you have a choice -- either (a) the government goes "bite me", and people reshuffle themselves into an economy that works within 2 years (depression of 1920-21); or (b) the government does things.....which are worse than useless.....which cause massive ongoing distortions perpetuating the problems......and will only end up being solved after some poor schmoes get nuked. Like the plan to go to single payer once Obamacare lays waste to the health insurance industry? Because doubling and tripling of current rates isn't going to be nearly enough once everyone who can starts taking advantage of the system.
Note that there were snickers around the time of passage over the fact that even obamacare in all its glorious stupidity doesn't in fact cover everyone. So transitioning to single payer, including all the dirt poor not yet included, will drive the costs of care even higher as doctors flat out flee the system.
The money for this is going to come from where?

Yep, ArcNet on coax cable. Was the wave of the future back then. But it was different enough from the coax you'd use for TV that it wasn't usable for MOCA when it became desirable to get the whole place networked. So a combination of powerline and WiFi covers the gaps.
He has a D-Link NAS box that is a bit dated but I'm hoping to get a couple of 2 TB drives in JBOD mode running so I can set him up with a video library he can pull up on the big TV downstairs as well as the assorted computers. There is a LG BP-220 Blu-ray deck that would act as the DLNA client. It has pretty good codec support, just lacking Ogg and FLAC. Transcoding can fix that if one is willing to wait. The newer Intel CPUs do it pretty fast if quality isn't required to be pristine to the source file.

There is no enough RAM. There is only the limit of what the motherboard will support.
The first machine I put Win95 on was an IBM Blue Lightning clock-tripled (100 MHz internally, which was a big deal at the time) 486 system that was a cast-off from Chaos Manor. This was a pre-release model based on a chip that IBM manufactured for Cyrix (IIRC) and had rights to sell under their own brand.
That machine could only accept 16 MB, which was only halfway to the Win95 sweet spot of 32 MB. (Anything over 64 MB was largely useless unless it was for an app that did its own memory management, like PhotoShop. One of the major improvements of Win98 was getting up to 96 MB before diminishing returns became severe.)
I then got a Gateway Pentium 133 system that had been in the first generation to ship with Win95 and was the fastest thing they had at the time it was sent to Chaos Manor. It was named Racing Cow and ended up with me after it had become sufficiently dated as new machines showed up there frequently. It came with 16 MB and my first upgrade was to add more. I could have just added 16 MB but I noticed it was only about $50 more to add 32 MB and go up to 48 MB.
I was struck by the realization that this would be 1024 times the memory of the first machine I owned, an Atari 800. At that moment it went from interesting option to moral imperative.
I'm like a kid who grew up during the Great Depression (copyright US Government) who later hit it big. I want all the affordable RAM I can get, just because I can.

In the 90s, I was the Controller of a manufacturing company that was talking about getting a new plotter, and they were dinking around about this-or-that $4K model.
Someone suggested a $20K laser plotter, and everyone was shocked when I upchecked it (and we eventually purchased it).
Fact is, you got three people wandering the halls drinking coffee with a donut at $80/hour, and it doesn't take you very long to justify shaving 80% off of plotting time for $16K.

Have you looked at the Intel server CPU's? Same computational cores, but with massively larger L2's than the desktop crap has. That makes a huge difference with repetitive pouring over data.
Looking at the cache line loading behavior of an app can make a big difference too. Sometimes simply reordering the elements of a structure a bit, or processing arrays row major rather than column major can make a 2X-10X speed difference. Fortran compilers are notorious for preferring column major storage ordering.
I've seen apps speed up 10X just by changing a handful of machine instructions in a critical spot.

For render farms the power needs of SLI doesn't work out well. That market is served by the dedicated HPC cards using high end GPUs but greater power efficiency because they aren't concerned with driving a display.
Those cards are kinda pricey but the electrical bills for a big render farm can be far worse. You have to spend some serious cash to save more in the long term.

This doesn't bode well as it indicates that they feel confident that they won't suffer for their actions OR that we can't punish them for their actions.
Now is this because of something they know or is it an educated guess?

Me too. After a starvation diet of programming in assembler so you can tweek a program to use 512 bytes less memory the new machines with *gasp* giga bytes is almost too much (swoon).
Now I find my choke point is the memory on the graphics card and I don't have one that memory can be added by the user. I can't upgrade because I'm so far back in the past on hardward and can't afford new because of well . . you know.
I just sprung for a 160 gb hd as a back up to my main drive. 37 bucks. Good grief.

In the first half of 1999 I had a job at a place that mainly installed and maintained phone systems. Unlike most of its competitors it had an actual IT staff. I was hired as #3 guy and soon to move up when the IT lead took a job at the then then new Getty Center.
The dispatch center was the big trouble spot I was determined to resolved. Because it was seriously broken and also was the primary location for young unmarried female employees. Anyway, the company had a intense resistance to any investment in training that wasn't directly revenue driven. So, to avoid showing the dispatchers how to use Windows properly, ALL of the apps they used were launched from the Startup folder at login. This was on an assortment of HP Vectras running Win95 with 16 MB.
The average time from pressing the power button to doing any work was almost fifteen minutes, with something like a 15% probability of a BSOD and starting from scratch. When one of the dispatch machines had a hard drive go tits up I took the opportunity to run an experiment. In addition to replacing the hard drive and installing the works, I used some RAM lying around the IT workbench to kick the machine up to 32 MB.
Night and frigging day. Time to a usable system from boot was down to about four minutes and crashes eliminated. The user dispatch was convinced I'd given her an entire new PC. So it seemed the next obvious step was to upgrade the lot.
Not so fast.
The company was in the process of being acquired by a new entity called Exp@nets that thought there was call for a company that installed phone and data wiring and gear on a national scale. To create this they were buying up local companies all over and merging them together. The former #2 who was now running the department was terrified to suggest anything that called for spending money, even just a few hundred bucks for what I wanted to do. I even put together a presentation showing the amount of the dispatchers' time wasted in just one week was enough to cover the cost of making sure every PC in the company had at least 32 MB of RAM. He wouldn't present it to his boss nor would he let me take it up the chain myself.
On top of this, Exp@nets was under the delusion that each of the Southern CA companies they were buying and merging together had their own IT and there would soon be too many of us. In fact, the other two companies had NO IT staff and instead had PBX installers doing internal IT work in their rare free time. So the company was really severely understaffed for IT. But it took them the better part of a year to process this concept, even with the VP my department fell under shouting at them on the phone.
I was the last hired, so I was the first fired. I moved on to other stuff, and the guys who sold the company to Exp@nets eventually bought the name back for a small fraction of what they'd been paid for it and started a new company to do the same stuff except with a lot more networking in the mix. I found out about this far too late to get aboard. Which is a shame because the place is close enough to my home that I could bicycle to work much of the year. (It's a newer building a few miles from the original location, where our next door neighbor was Foundation Imaging of Babylon 5 fame.)

Curiously, saving memory like that can still be a big win on modern CPU's with gigs of ram...due to smallish L1 caches. The original Pentium 4 only had a 4k L1 cache.
If you can keep the computationally intensive code and data mostly in the L1, its like a 5X-10X boost over having to go hit the L2 or main RAM.
Many people make a big mistake telling their compiler to optimize for "speed", because that often results in plumper code that can blow out the L1 cache even thought the "book" cycle timings say it should be faster.
Sometimes smaller and a little bit slower by the book is faster in real life. Its one of those Heinlein you gotta "grok" it things.

What was especially bad in this case is that all of the apps wanted to own the system during initialization. Watching it play out in a debugger log showing memory usage was a real eye opener. It was like having a barracks where all of the individuals briefly turn into an elephant when they wake up and then revert to human size. Not a problem if you only have one elephant at a time but when everybody becomes an elephant almost simultaneously...
Win95 just didn't have the mechanisms to mange this. Running the same setup on NT went much better but a couple of the items simply didn't work right under NT due to their awful abuse of the API guidelines. I was testing a script that would delay each launch so that it didn't become a roomful of elephants but then was suddenly unemployed and no longer cared. Given just one more day I would probably have save them a few hundred bucks a week in wasted dispatcher's time on the clock.

It's hard to beat having Hollywood accounting on your side for buying new gear. They're master of charging the entire cost of a big equipment buy to a single production, then doing the same for another production. By the time it's decommissioned the same render box has been paid for by a half-dozen different movies.
A friend of mine in the industry said that a facility built and charged entirely to the budget of 'Mars Attacks' was also charged to at least three other movies, one of which ended up not using it at all.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug and that is how they pay for it.
