Schumer: Senate immigration bill would make country safer. Really?

"Our bill, while certainly it gives a path to citizenship and legalizes people right away, we will know the identities of everybody. And that makes the country safer," Schumer said in an interview with Univision set to air Sunday. "So I think our bill would actually – it's too early to tie it to any specific incident – but overall, it'll make the country a lot safer."

Let's apply this to the Boston bomber terror attack. Well what do you know, we knew their identities since we made at least one of them a citizen and we checked out the other brother on behalf of another country. How'd that work out?

Oh man. It is a sad state of affairs when the Ambassador of the Czech Republic has to issue a statement reminding folks that the Czech Republic and Chechnya are two different entities. I guess he knows his target audience here in the states and it is a pretty sad testament to how dumb our youth are. Of course, this could've been directed at our MSM too. We saw how bad they were with their coverage of the Boston terror attack and their tinfoil hat theories on the perps.

Gun and Ammo Stocks

Hopefully this will translate into lower prices (not likely based on this report). I'm in the market to get my armory started. Gun stocks lag after gun control bill fails.

There is a saying, you can never have enough ammo. Why one cop carries 145 rounds of ammo on the job. Might've come in handy after reading what happened Thursday night with the Boston terror bombers.

After more than 200 rounds were traded over several minutes, some officers were out of ammunition and charged the brothers’ position with their police car. The vehicle was disabled by gunfire from the Mercedes. Kitzenberg said he saw one of the shooters toss a metallic object — possibly a pressure-cooker bomb similar to the ones used in the marathon attack — in the direction of the police line. It rolled a few yards before detonating harmlessly.

Battlestar Galactica/Friends Intro Soundtrack

As a commenter said on Youtube, I'm pretty sure they used every smile from the series in this short clip.

Oblivion Soundtrack

I have no idea if the movie Oblivion will be any good but it looks like it has impressive visuals. Who they hired to do the score intrigued me. This is the same director that used Daft Punk for Tron: Legacy so I was naturally curious when I heard that M83 was hired to do this score. Evidently M83 is classified as a "shoegazing" band. I had no idea that's what they call that genre of alternative rock but there you go. Their biggest hit was Midnight City. You can listen here to the entire 17 track score from Oblivion. Not bad.

Medicine

I don't know, with Obamacare, I can see this coming back as prescribed treatment. A century ago, alcohol was legitimate medicine.

Night Sky Reminder

The Lyrid meteor shower is ongoing through the 25th. The peak is before dawn on the 22nd. The moon might make it a little weaker this year. But there are many more opportunities to see some celestial objects the rest of the year (see list at the link).

38 Interesting take on the Boston Bombing and the 2 terrorist scum from Debka- Yeah I know it's Debka but still: The conclusion reached by DEBKAfile’s counterterrorism and intelligence sources is that the brothers were double agents, hired by US and Saudi intelligence to penetrate the Wahhabi jihadist networks which, helped by Saudi financial institutions, had spread across the restive Russian Caucasian. Instead, the two former Chechens betrayed their mission and went secretly over to the radical Islamist networks. By this tortuous path, the brothers earned the dubious distinction of being the first terrorist operatives to import al Qaeda terror to the United States through a winding route outside the Middle East – the Caucasus. Moscow however keeps these republics on a tight military and intelligence leash, constantly putting down violent resistance by the Wahhabist cells, which draw support from certain Saudi sources and funds from the Riyadh government for building Wahhabist mosques and schools to disseminate the state religion of Saudi Arabia. The Saudis feared that their convoluted involvement in the Caucasus would come embarrassingly to light when a Saudi student was questioned about his involvement in the bombng attacks while in a Boston hospital with badly burned hands. They were concerned to enough to send Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saudi al-Faisal to Washington Wednesday, April 17, in the middle of the Boston Marathon bombing crisis, for a private conversation with President Barack Obama and his national security adviser Tom Donilon on how to handle the Saudi angle of the bombing attack. The Tsarnaevs' recruitment by US intelligence as penetration agents against terrorist networks in southern Russia explains some otherwise baffling features of the event: 1. An elite American college in Cambridge admitted younger brother Dzhokhar and granted him a $2,500 scholarship, without subjecting him to the exceptionally stiff standard conditions of admission. This may be explained by his older brother Tamerlan demanding this privilege for his kid brother in part payment for recruitment. 2. When in 2011, a “foreign government” (Russian intelligence) asked the FBI to screen Tamerlan for suspected ties to Caucasian Wahhabist cells during a period in which they had begun pledging allegiance to al Qaeda, the agency, it was officially revealed, found nothing incriminating against him and let him go after a short interview. He was not placed under surveillance. Neither was there any attempt to hide the fact that he paid a long visit to Russia last year and on his return began promoting radical Islam on social media. Yet even after the Boston marathon bombings, when law enforcement agencies, heavily reinforced by federal and state personnel, desperately hunted the perpetrators, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was never mentioned as a possible suspect 3. Friday, four days after the twin explosions at the marathon finishing line, the FBI released footage of Suspect No. 1 in a black hat and Suspect No. 2 in a white hat walking briskly away from the crime scene, and appealed to the public to help the authorities identify the pair. We now know this was a charade. The authorities knew exactly who they were. Suddenly, during the police pursuit of their getaway car from the MIT campus on Friday, they were fully identified. The brother who was killed in the chase was named Tamerlan, aged 26, and the one who escaped, only to be hunted down Saturday night hiding in a boat, was 19-year old Dzhokhar. Make of it what you want

Battlestar Galactica/Friends Intro Soundtrack

As a commenter said on Youtube, I'm pretty sure they used every smile from the series in this short clip.

Slightly related to this, I finally watched the premiere of Defiance.  I will say that its more in line with SG-1 and Farscape than it is with Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Universe.  In other words there is actually some light moments and the idea is not "Let's see how miserable we can make everyone feel."

And I believe Anna Puma mentioned some complaint about seeing a making of and didn't like a scene where it seemed like they were fighting giant robots with standard military rifles.  The actual scene I thought made sense in the actual context of the show and is thus worth giving a chance.

61 The Russians keep popping up in this story about the Boston bombings, don't they? They seem to really have their shit together. We all know Obambi thanked Putin for his help...but what's clear now is that before the FBI ID'd the suspects, Russia had offered it's help. It's almost as if they somehow knew that this was going to be linked to Chechnya. While Chrissy Mathews was still squirming excitedly in his soaked underoos over the possibility that the bombing was part of some right wing protest, the Russians already knew what was going on. I get the distinct feeling that our federal LE agencies are slipping back into their comfortable pre 9/11 existences....then again, the Russians have always excelled at boots on the ground human intel. http://tinyurl.com/c7vd3qj I guarantee no U.S. news agency is covering this story in this kind of detail. They're all still hemming and hawing, wringing their hands, and wondering aloud what could possibly have motivated these two precious, and precocious waif-like foundlings. /spit

92 58 I watched Defiance as well buzzion. I thought it was alright. They definitely went cheap on the effects. I'll give it a few more viewings and see how it goes. Not much else on though anyway. Falling Skies comes back for 8 episodes in June.

Posted by: CDR M at April 20, 2013 10:17 PM (dKV5k)

Well it is SyFy afterall so I'm not expecting higher effects.  And you know as opposed to Falling Skies where the Hero is College Teacher, the Hero of Defiance is an actual former soldier.  I think Defiance won't take itself too seriously vs Falling Skies which tends to at times.

97 81 Haven't seen a bank do that in many years, StP. It might be different where you are. In fact, it most assuredly is. I could have gotten the whole thing, no cut, if I took a gift certificate, which I almost did, they had Amazon dot com, which I could use, but it was some fuckin' certificate, not a card, and I am not a trusting soul, so I let 'em have the 7 bucks and, really, I'm good with it.

I knew a B1-B was the fly over, I had seen it during the week flying around. You could not hear it until you saw it. It came over at about 1500 ft. About 1/4 mi from the field it hit it's afterburners. I could fell the jet fuel on me as it came over me and split the goal posts at full fucking bore headed straight for the Bank America Building (75 stories). The fucker kept the burner on and sweep the wing back and was fucking gone. All I could think was thank God I am not some towel head in the desert. Best fly over evah!

107 One of the brothers suspected of the Boston Marathon bombings had direct contact with Chechen terrorists – and was ‘monitored’ by investigators for five years.

The Daily Mail on Sunday has learned that the FBI put Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, under surveillance after receiving an explicit warning from the Russian intelligence services.

But despite apparently telling his mother that Tamerlan was an ‘extremist’ leader, the FBI eventually discounted the possibility that he was a threat.

177 Some good UFC fights tonight. Title fight was kinda weak. Henderson beat home town crowd favorite Melendez. Crowd booed the decision. Then Henderson proposed to his girlfriend in the octagon and ... the crowd kept booing. She said yes, but I doubt she dreamed of being booed during her proposal on live national TV when she was a little girl. Henderson probably should have thought about the "home town crowd favorite" of his opponent before doing his stupid proposal stunt.

It was odd because I was just walking down town towards the river and all of a sudden, as I was looking through some buildings it was slid in and out of view. it was banking sharply so you could see the serrated edges.

294 Prayers go out to him and your family. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 20, 2013 10:42 PM (piMMO) Thank you very much NDO. I am in MA and he's in Maine. I haven't seen him but a married couple asked one of his friends for my phone number and she has been to see him and calls me when she is there or afterwards. He was so sick when someone called 911 the hospital called me before 5 am to ask if I would consent to his treatment. First it was a UTI, and they would take him off ventilator next day, then he had pneumonia, and blood infection. They took him off ventilator a week ago Tuesday. He was very weak, he couldn't use arms or move toes. They speculated he could have had stroke. Doctor called me Wednesday to say he finally had full body MRI and infection is in discs in his neck. He had to have three discs removed Thursday and is back in CCU (Maine calls that critical care unit). He's still out and they are keeping him on ventilator as of today. The week he was in regular room the only way to speak with him was to call and ask nurse to hold phone for him. His friend would put cell on speaker phone so we could talk. He'll be in there with pic line antibiotics for 6 to 8 weeks.

I'm not sure that even Alabamans and Mississippians know which state is on which side of the border, but at least they both know they're Dixie.

314 255 Warthog pilots love to do that shit. I was driving in the middle of SC doing about 100, seriously straight road, and two came over me not that low. I flashed my lights, and I guess they figure out how fast I was going. They came over seriously low, I could see them approaching in my rear view mirror, and wing tipped me. They use to do that all up and down SC beaches after first gulf war when they were stationed at Myrtle Beach. People would see them coming and stand up to wave at them, it looked like a wave of people on the beach. Posted by: Billy Bob, pseudo intellectal at April 20, 2013 11:00 PM (wR+pz) There used to be a squadron of A-10s based at a now-defunct naval air station near me. They regularly flew over my neighborhood, but it was a residential area, so they didn't do any really low passes. I always liked to watch them go by. Once at an air show they had one on static display. Its nose had some of those bullet hole decals you can buy for your car.

The most memorable flyover for me happened in college.  Our starting QB had died in a summer boating accident.  In the fall, our first home game was against the Air Force Academy and the AF did a missing man flyover.  It still moves me when I think about it.

I also live near downtown Denver.  I swear I could smell the smoke from Civic Center when I went outside today.  At one time I worked near 6th and Union in Lakewood.  Best commute ever - no sun in the eyes, no traffic.

I think it's going to be overcast tomorrow night so at least the moon won't interfere with seeing the meteor shower.

For the Doolittle Reunion what the B-25s did was do a fly over the parade.  Then the B-25s were going to visit Field #2 that the Raiders trained at back in 1942.  So those who paid the money got that experience.

Seriously ladies what has to break in your brain to say, "Hey I should convert to Islam and marry this dude who has been looked at by the F.B.I." Feminists have no problem with woman beating muzzles or female circumcision, or Chinese baby girls being aborted. They are too busy fighting Mitt's War on Women and trying to free their sisters from binders.

In all fairness, the "patriarchal oppressors of women" in our country are much easier to deal with, in that they won't rape, mutilate, or kill women and claim it's their right and then be granted the actual legal backing of the state.

Depending on where you live your soil may need lime or the other one to change pH. In MA when soil is off we almost always need lime. Soil tests should be free, or you could buy a pH meter. I don't think you are a serious gardener so pay for FedEx to send soil sample. Last time I did it I sent it out to UMass, probably in Amherst.

Heh, good point (employed by squad leader, not that there was per squad). Still, we were the only squad in the battalion with four, the rest had two. On the plus side, we were on QRF half the time (which meant we got to kick back and relax half the time) instead of doing drudge work like building fortifications.

I'm not looking to run marathons, I'd just like to go out for a two mile run without the agony Hmm. I would get a gait analysis from a reputable podiatrist or physical therapist. Might also be helpful to see a sports med guy. PT peeps can work wonders. Is the pain on the outside of your knees and ankles?

A few weeks later, the man goes on another trip. When he comes home his brother tells him .. “Mom wandered out onto the roof …“

sure our Ordy Boys are subpar but not malignant ones.

I wish all the battleship Q'd people in the Navy past and present had beaten the hell out of every level of command and oversight for their trying to besmirch the dead when the Iowa's guns went boom the wrong way.....

522 From the always clueless CNN online: If the brothers' motivation had something to do with their Chechen heritage, how might that have played out in this case? Well, let's see. If I wanted to radicalize this young man, how would I go about it? How about this: I start by isolating him at the mosque and playing off his emotions about the things he feels strongest about. So I tell him, "Tamerlan, you are not just a son of Chechnya, you are destined to be a hero. Your very name comes from one of the greatest Khans in our history, one who, like you, overcame many obstacles on his way to greatness. You have seen what the Russians have done to your Chechen brothers, obviously they are not your friends. They want only to dominate and humiliate you. You have seen how weak the Americans are, how they cower before us and run from conflict, how like the Russians they failed in Afghanistan against a bunch of peasants. These people are not your friends either. They are not even your equal. They do not have your fighter's spirit, your boxer's power, your purity of mind, or the pride and tactical brilliance of our hero Tamerlane. You are different. You are special. You have seen how the West has treated our people for centuries, from ancient Jerusalem to modern Palestine, in Iraq and Syria and Jordan and Egypt, how they disrespect our brothers in Iran. Surely you can see by now that the Democratic-Communist relationship is failing, and cannot stand in the way of the coming Islamic Storm. These people are your enemies, the ones we should all hope to have the chance to hurt and kill and destroy." And so on. It's kids play really, just take the West's rhetoric, invert it, and patronize him by playing off his wounded pride and building him up with flattery and false esteem. For a Chechen youth the script practically writes itself. So yeah, CNN, his being a Chechen -- and much more importantly, his being a Muslim -- played a role. A seminal role. That you either can't or won't see that speaks volumes about your so-called "journalists."

Posted by: Adriane ... at April 20, 2013 09:06 PM (TvO05)

631 It's been one week since we got to see
Cheatin' lovers and cousins that marry
Five days since they had the show
With the hermaphrodite, the slut, and the crack ho
Three days since we heard the tale
About the guy who learned his woman was a she-male
Yesterday it occurred to me
That I've been watchin' a bit too much Jerry Springer

Holy cow, d'you see it last week?
Well, they had this one freak
Who sucker-punched his whole family
Do you recall when the brawl
Became a total free-for-all

And Jerry's in the middle tryin' to be the referee
Hey, see the stripper with the implants
She likes to lap dance
And date the boyfriend of her mother
Now here come's Jerry's next guest
And it's a slugfest
'Cause it's her trailer trash brother
Nymphomaniac is back on crack
It's like "When Animals Attack"
They all exhibit reprehensible behavior
Hit 'em in the nose, tear off their clothes
Step on their toes, that's how it goes
They get so violent they have to sign a waiver

They're always swearin', cursin', kickin' butt, and pointin' blame
On the air? They don't care, they've got no shame
There was one guy who I'm sure felt a little strange
When he found out that his wife had a sex change
They have a tendency to scream and yell constantly
They have a history of ripping off their shirts

Now I see why some dislike Ann Coulter.  I generally like but I run across a lot who don't.

I saw her Jerry Rivers' show (uggggh) and he asked her about whether to Mirandize or not.  She goes off on why not to Mirandize, he then asks her whether to go w/  civil trial or a military tribunal.  Apparently she is so wrapped up in what she is saying and continues on the Mirandization line.  WTF!

Then she refers to another guest, Ahmed Ahmed, as Achmed Achemd!  Maybe she was just tired, but either she's on something or she's full of her self.  I've usually liked her in the past, unlike the buffoon host.

685 and the schools just passive-aggressively violated them en masse and lied about it.

It wasn't about discrimination, it was about tuitions.

An in-state student paid about 1/3 what a foreign student did.  UCSD was obviously crawling with foreign students given that huge revenue delta.

I was kinda shocked when I got in, AND got a TA.  The foreign grad students didn't get a lot of the TA's.

688 At the time I am writing this a scandal is erupting across the internet and the mainstream involving prestigious Georgetown University and tied to one of their former employees, Arianna Pattek, a Georgetown grad student who says she was hired to read and process applications for admissions to the school. She claims she had a very interesting system for screening applicants. The applications from white males were trashed, regardless of qualifications. And now it appears that Georgetown University may be trying to cover it up. Posted by: Hank Johnson at April 21, 2013 12:40 AM (e8kgV) There were a lot of comments about this over on Reddit. Claims included that the poster was actually an undergrad and was making stuff up to sound all Progressive; and also that admissions are not screened in May/June. Lots of comments on that here: http://tinyurl.com/bsh4bzm So this is likely to have not happened. The blog where this all started seems to be from some P.C. loving girl who wanted to look "cool" with the P.C. crowd. Either that or it is one of the most effective cases of sock-puppeting I've seen.

Posted by: The Political Hat at April 20, 2013 09:55 PM (Vk2pI)

689 I also think UCSD was cynically milking a lot of those foreign students, knowing they weren't qualified and would flunk out.

A lot of my incoming grad school class's foreign students weren't really well prepared.

Exception: the older Taiwan students who had been in industry for a while and were paying their own way.  Those guys were on their game and came to play.

Baker was the first Doctor I saw, and certainly rocked that role. I thought McCoy also had that sense of fun.

But Tennant - Tennat *really* rocked that role. Flawed, yes, but very good.

Hartnell was my first. Troughton, Tom Baker and McCoy made the best doctors. Biased toward Troughton as the most memorable, for me. Both Troughton and Baker had the advantage of good periods of stories and writing. Troughton's term was when dr who first really got seriously weird and spacey. Baker had a particularly good run in the 70's story wise. McCoy had the disadvantage of being the back end of a long decline story wise. If one factors that in, McCoy could possibly be the all time best, considering what he had to work with.

704 So they pretended to be bigots to hide greed? Seems like a wasted effort.

Front loading admissions with weak 3X tuition students so you can rip'em off and send'em packing without the degree is an international incident.

People expect Americans to be bigots, so that's no big deal.  That you can "fix" with sensitivity and diversity training.

The other thing, foreign countries would have been looking for reparations for their students who got ripped off.  Messy, messy, messy.

In the case of the oriental undergrads, such an investigation could have gotten real ugly.  The suicides were always kept out of the local news, but it was no secret on campus that a half dozen or so were swan diving off the engineering building each year when they got some grade other than an A.  Loss of face was a big deal for them.

710 Look at this crap: It was a perfectly logical thing to do. English teacher Steve Matteo at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School put his Chechen-born student in touch with a friend who happens to be one of the top experts on Chechnya, UMass Dartmouth's Brian Glyn Williams. That was two years ago. The assignment was to have each student in the very diverse class research their own ethnicity and write about it. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, whose family fled the horrors of the Russian occupation, was about to learn about some harrowing things he escaped from at a very young age. Williams, whose classes on the War on Terror are routinely packed, obliged by exchanging emails with the then-17-year-old student. There was a lot to read about. Especially since the Russians retook the tiny separatist republic, there are stories of mass killings, death camps, mass graves, torture, destruction. There were retaliatory strikes inside Russia, including a hostage drama in a Moscow theater. Russia in the end sent 100,000 troops to surround Chechnya to keep it under their thumb. As Williams put it, an ancient civilization was being wiped away. As many as one-fifth of the Chechen population of less than a million died in those years. On Friday morning, Williams awoke to hear that this young man was the suspect being sought in the Boston Marathon bombing Monday. Williams shot me an email. I phoned him and at one point I heard a rare twinge of worry in his voice. "I hope I didn't contribute to it. That kid and his brother identified with the Chechen struggle," he said. Matteo said he couldn't talk to me, which is understandable given the circumstances. But Williams recalled the student clearly, though the two never met and communicated by email, Williams sending him links to academic papers he's published and books he recommended. "He was learning his Chechen identity, identifying with the diaspora and identifying with his homeland," he said. "He wanted to learn more about Chechnya, who the fighters were, who the commanders were. I sort of gave him background." Those who are curious can read Williams' material on his website. But Tsarnaev's older brother Tamerlan had taken things to a new level. Friendless in the United States, he returned to Russia for six months last year and was drawn in by the story. "If there is trauma in the homeland, I think some in the diaspora become radicalized and that causes them to resort to terror," Williams said. Tsaraev may have simply followed his older brother's lead. In Williams' view, Chechnya has an undeserved reputation as a hatchery of terrorists, including al-Qaida and the Taliban. "Foreign fighters did come in and radicalized people," Williams said. For some, "they transformed the form of war from a national one to a full-blown terrorist jihad." But he charges there is no basis for an al-Qaida link, or even a Taliban link, for that matter. But years of Russian disinformation, 9/11, and a sloppy American media worsened Chechnya's reputation. In a book to be published next year, "Inferno in the Caucus: The Chechen insurgency and the Mirage of Al Qaeda," he says that no matter what the Chechens are, "they are not al-Qaida. Repeat: They are not al-Qaida." southcoasttoday.com

I think it was the opening episode where a bitter, disabled programmer who created an artificial intelligence to manage vast financial systems basically stayed up late talking to it about how unjust the world was, and how awful people were, and how wasteful, and on and on - so the computer started trying to insert itself all over in different systems and started killing people that were "wasteful." Just wondering if there was a lot of "social justice" in those e-mails.

This amuses me in hindsight, but my first assignment in my first job out of grad school was to work on a control loop for a proposal for a new missile. Some acronym that I probably knew what the letters stood for, but not really what it was all about. Some REALLY unusual discussions in the room, that opened my eyes.

The amusing part it that it hit me about 30 years later, "Hey - I was working on a nuclear missile!" Funny how you don't see the forest for the trees when you're a kid.

We lost that proposal (we were really something of an underdog), and the main thing I remembered was that the guy in charge got promoted, which seemed rather ass-backward. The thing was eventually cancelled (for the guys who won) anyway.

Looking it up, I see that it was going to be put on the B-1, that is being talked about. The "odd discussions" were about the trade-off between how big a nuclear warhead you need, vs. the accuracy of the guidance system. When you're a college kid, you're just taught to think "Nukes go off - everything goes bye-bye!" - you don't really think about how if you're trying to take out a hardened missile silo, that you need a bigger bang if you miss by 1000 yds (or whatever it was), than if you miss by 500 yds.

You also don't really think about how most people go their whole lives without having a serious discussion about such a thing going on in their office...

*shrug* It's just a thing. Kinda reminds you of what you already know, but it's like that Supertramp song...some they will and some they won't, with some it's just as well...

744 @718 One reason I strongly suspect if not al-Q, but something similar, is that WTF do the Chechens have to do with US? Russians, yeah, that makes sense. But for them to want to slaughter Americans, I don't see how you get to that from violent Chechen nationalism.

Someone pointed out, not sure if it was here or not, that if you look at before and after photos of the explosion, the bomb was put down right where the Russian flag was flying.  I don't know if that has been de-bunked yet.  It could have just been coincidence.

745 My copy of "The Ship's Medicine Chest and Medical Aid at Sea" still lists "medicinal whiskey." WTF is it with "Battlestar Galatica?" Seriously, that was about when I quit watching TV. I recognize "Starbuck" and that is about it....

748 If there is a difference between moderate muslims and Islamists, how would you go about encouraging the one and killing off the other from a philosophical view?

MacArthur talked about the strength of our troops came from the simple precepts of Duty, Honor, Country. But this presupposes that 'Duty' is to your fellow soldiers and not some imam; 'Honor' is to vow to defend and protect the Constitution of the US and not some religious ideology; and last, that Country overwhelms any feeling about former country mates from your past.
