Overnight Open Thread (20 Jul 2013)
— CDR M

I think we now know why La Raza wants nothing to do with standing up for an exonerated hispanic man. Via dri in the sidebar, $300 million in slush funds for immigration rights groups. Cash and political power trumps standing by someone who they're supposed to support. At least according to their website. Are those just words? Spying Pop Quiz

This will be a bit more challenging than last weeks pop quiz. How well do you know the world of spying? Take the CIA/NSA quiz.

Candy Profiling

This candy profiling is out of control. First it was Skittles and now it's Snickers.

Drone Hunting Season

I guess those fake CA drone highway patrol signs spooked some folks.Colorado town to consider drone hunting license, bounty. Take that Skynet but I think the Hellfire missile wins. And maybe the FAA as they warn folks not to shoot at drones.

If Idioms Were Real

Play Date Consultants

Damn I'm in the wrong line of work. $400/Hour "play date" consultants for rich kids who suck at playing with others.

Sex Addiction

I wasn't buying the addiction part anyway. New brain study questions existence of "sexual addiction".

We found that the brainÂ’s response to sexual pictures was not predicted by any of three different questionnaire measures of hypersexuality. Brain response was only predicted by a measure of sexual desire. In other words, hypersexuality does not appear to explain brain differences in sexual response any more than just having a high libido.

In related news, the "I have a headache" excuse won't work anymore as science determines that sex is better for headaches than painkillers.

Facials

Of course it's from Japan. You 'ettes ready for some snail facials?

Doomsday Prep

Somehow, I don't think I'll be able to qualify but a Merkava tank would be pretty kick-ass thing to have. Israel to sell F-16's and Merkava tanks at auction.

12 Ok, sad moment. My wife just found out that the security guard from her high school passed away today. She really liked him and has always talked about what a nice guy he was. Funny moment. My wife, "Sonofabitch. You can't found out anything about what happened to him. He's got a famous name and it makes it impossible to search." Me "What's his name?" Wife "Jerry Maguire" Me "Buahahahahahahahaha" Wife "I fucking know, right?!?!?"

51 Eh, "sexual addiction" is an excuse people like Michael Douglas use to justify their promiscuity. If they like those activities so much, more power to them, but don't pass it off as if it's a disability. btw, if anybody wants a tank, the Russians are doing a large-scale drill in the Far East. They either are finished or should be wrapping the exercise up very soon. God help me for saying this, but Matthew Yglasias has a pretty decent article in the amateur webzine Slate about why it should be easier for cities to go bankrupt.  Short version: it would make it harder for politicians to make long term promises (such as fat pensions or stadium deals) that they won't be around to deal with.

There are actually some fairly inexpensive islands that you can purchase if you are so inclined, including some that are developed and come with existing houses, multiple cabins, boat docks, running utilities, etc. I've actually spoken to some of my family members about pooling our money to buy a family compound on an island advertised on that site.

Sarah running through a cantena dressed like Carmen Miranda and firing an SMG. "Well she's your girlfriend Frank."

283 So, the eldest 1981 child lost her first tooth today. But it was actually "lost". We had some friends over and she went to show them "how wiggly" it was and...no tooth. So she wrote a note to the tooth fairy before she went to bed, explaining what happened. The wife and I just finished penning a note from her personal tooth fairy, Alura. The wife is decorating with some glitter and then we gotta slip it and some quarters into the kiddo's room.

Posted by: Tammy sans Thor at July 20, 2013 11:36 PM (9HoO6) Different Church of Christ. DOC had liberal leadership back when, but the congregations were often conservative. My home church was pretty conservative. Now they're doing that mainstream denomination thing where they throw out the parts of the Bible they find unappealing and become mostly a social club where you can feel good about yourself for being so enlightened and tolerant. And by tolerant, I mean being tolerant of real sins and intolerant toward those they want to accuse of made-up sins. It's interesting that in a lot of those type of churches, there are almost no men in leadership positions.

Oddly, I've never had that much of a problem working on toilets (knocks wood). Stuff I hate is working with stuff that goes through the deck, like faucets, filtered-water faucets, air gaps, etc., 'cause I'm usually working alone. So it's get up, clamp the faucet against a board or something, go underneath, turn the knob that holds it until I see the unit turn,,,,get up, rotate the thing right, brace it better, repeat..... I really, really, really hate that -- especially with the limited space to work behind the sink and the horrible lighting.

I just can't imagine. Posted by: BCochran1981 -

My best friend had this happen between he and his wife twice.  They weren't as close to delivery, but it was a traumatic experience.  (of course)  Their Faith in God actually guided me through their loss both times.

When I spoke to he and his wife, three weeks after the second miscarriage...

Three Weeks!, this beautiful woman had let the tears to flow in private and within our blessed family, enough to allow the beautiful child's passage into Heaven.

I'd like to tell that we ate cookies and "didn't worry", but we all cried together.  I was Blessed to have this friend and his wife to allow me to share their solemn grief.  They'd driven from Chicago to Cleveland.

I love this man and his family.  They've loved me through tough times.  They deserve to see me cry and love and try to compose myself as I wiped snot off my sleeve and changed clothes.

They lost two beautiful children.  One boy, one girl.  I grieve for them at this moment.

They'll never forget it.  I'll never forget it.

I pray for the unborn.  I pray that the community beyond us understands the desperate loss that may entail.

I pray for your friends, BC.  Upon my knees, I --without losing a child of my own--  understand the grief of the innocents' passing.

Our Lord holds the most innocent closest.  His Will be done and His bosom awaits those, who are amongst the most innocent.  Those whose passing is beyond our wisest and most talented.

There is a special place for these children.  His children.  For they shall be Angels amongst us, forever.

God Bless You.  God Bless the Children.

...all of them

*Amen*

I never liked it anyway, but we were at the Winter Nationals in Pomona many moons ago when a fight broke out and a guy got hit in the head with a baseball bat. I can still hear it, over 20 years later and it cured me of ever wanting to be anywhere near a fight again.

466 I do not really mind either way. however, if you go to a restaurant and serve soup and give you a spoon, why not also give you a fork? as far as eating japanese food is concerned, especially sushi ans sashimi - no advantage using chopsticks it is much harder than with a fork. Sorry no info, but over the years I've noticed there appears to have been formulated an official AOS diet. As I understand it, it mainly consists of:

- Bacon
- Val-U-Rite Vodka
- Bacon
- Porterhouse steaks
- Bacon
- Baby back ribs and other various quality pork products
- Bacon
- Dr. Pepper
- Bacon

...and of course, there's the ever-present bacon.

Yeah it looks like they're going back to the well of the first movie. It looks to be a better flick than most of the crap being made these days and should be entertaining at least. But, PB worked so well for a number of reasons, most of which didn't rely on Riddick as more than part of the story. I don't think it was wise to ever try to do sequels. For example, one of the major factors that made PB work, was the characters, most importantly the Johns vs Riddick thing. Johns was every bit the equal of Riddick, in PB. That dynamic was missing in "Chronicles", though Nick Chinlund's character offered potential, but was lost in the overblown Galactic messiah/Necronger stuff. This one looks to go back to the original, with the best part of "chronicles"... It will rely on how the characters work and will require a cracking script.

Let cool for as long as you can stand it.

534 >>>These assholes drive like maniacs through my neighborhood. Cops don't give a flying fuck, sheesh Two choices: 1) call local pd and ask them to set up a speed trap. I did it a few weeks ago, got to talking to the cop, until he had to grab some asshole going 54 in a 30...right next to the neighborhood pool. Dick 2) scatter a box of 16p nails across the road. Set up lawn chair, with six pack of good beer. Enjoy.

536 If I suddenly had all those millions, I would modernize my house, I would add a bathroom & split the house into three apartments. I have two floors all to myself and donÕt need all that space. I pay a fortune in oil heat. I would also bring my brother Paul to MA to the best doctor I know for orthopedic issues and have him find another one for infections. IÕm sure the medical costs would exceed the cost of putting a natural gas system in the house, and another bathroom and central air. I need some doors on rooms. My late motherÕs bedroom is the most comfortable room in the house even when itÕs 99 degrees out. I have to move in there. I sleep in the living room. I have to get a door or or curtain for that room because it is next to the kitchen. Then I would buy a small house with lots of land so I could have 300+ roses. O/T - Paul just called as i was typing this, he has fever of 103.8. I am 95% sure that they never killed initial strep infections.

I laugh at all these wannabe American lefty(s) "community" agitators and safety nets builders. The human despair that hits when that crashes is numbing.

In years past, I would wake up, check the GOESWEST SAT load the 4X4 with water, trail mix. Vid Cam and the deep desire to be in the middle of one of nature's pure FIREWORKS show by 2 p.m. My wife....never amused by the prep would always ask that wifey...."WHY!!"

My response..."WIFE!!!!.....AT LEAST I"M NOT INTO PONY"S OR STRIP CLUBS...and it cost us only gas for my pleasure........"REALLY????"

How much does it take to start/buy a cable channel? A SciFi channel with SciFi and not slasher/horror, Science channel, a conservative channel with ideology/philosophy and news. and it would have to be with 'vertical integration' where you own the script/writing, production, and distribution.

And that Riddick thing? Why would he go back to that monster planet, and it would have to be before the necromongers, because what is he going to do after the necros?

Ya, I know, with 141 mill, you can barely do one movie.

For less than $10 million I would pay off all the major debts of my family and friends.  For less than $10 million I would set up endowment plans for family and friends that would allow them to continue their present lifestyles (since they wouldn't owe any more debts) and make their own choice about working.

For about $2 million I would set up my own endowment and quit my job.

The rest I would spend on propaganda and try to give every leftist in the world enough heartburn to make them pass blood from every port, hole and pore in their bodies.  No mercy -- just brutal verbal and written beatings about every part of their bullshit.

It looks like Matt Damon is trying to raid the last bastion of civilization that has successfully cordoned itself off from the socialist wasteland of Earth. Or at least that's what I'm reading into it. There's certainly a whole lot of "we gotta stick it to them because they aren't sharing" in the previews I've seen.

Also, the effort to make Damon look like a badass by grafting him into power armor fails for me. YMMV.

I think it's the one with the baby performing remarkable feats while the parents go insane over the very existence of Pepsi Next.

There is a whole category of ads I loathe which seek to entice by showing people driven insane by the product or the lack of it. In a less politically correct era we had Sonny the Cocoa Puffs Cuckoo, who was subject to mania triggered by the breakfast cereal. He was eventually removed from TV, either after he was finally beaten to death by cops or institutionalized.

But the stream of mentally shattered people in advertising has continued.

I was brave and tried snails for the first time last weekend, at a Bastille Day (aka downtown merchants marketing shit) celebration. They tasted like sauteed portobello mushrooms - quite tasty. I think the frogs have a rep for being great chefs because they figured out that if you saute anything, even mice, in garlic and butter and wine and serve it with a big hunk of French bread, it'll taste good.

It didn't compare with the other two things I had there - the only reasons I go to that festival every year. A frozen margarita made with Chamboud liquor and a crepe filled with chocolate mousse and covered with caramel, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. My taste buds had an orgasm.

Is there any reason you're not running a garden hose in there to find out if you got all the petrified shit out of the way before you rebuild everything? Like all of Neil Blomkomp's stories, it doesn't pass the most basic analysis for believability and just asks the viewer to shut off their mind while the director gets on with his grievance mongering.

The idea that such a paradise could be created in orbit requires some fantastic advances in launch capability, deep space mining, or both, along with some other progress. With this amazing capability and stunning wealth, why would the Earth be allowed to continue as such a shithole. Leaving aside why it got that way and why the wealthy in the orbital cannot be bothered to do anything about it, why would they just abandon the most valuable real estate in the solar system? Wouldn't they set about radically reducing the population and set about repairing the place, to take advantage of an environment that is fantastically more friendly to life than the most luxurious orbital colony?

I have to admit, I had a slip yesterday though, I found an old Penthouse and fapped." "Great job, John! Keep it up or rather, keep it down!"

So who do we wage war on, Detroit or Hollywood? We're gonna plunder the rich and give to the poor, right? Or we're gonna exterminate the poor so everyone left will be rich?

607 " Toilet repairs suck in a major way. " A few years ago I went to one of my rental properties for a clogged toilet. The whole house had been gutted and re-plumbed less than a year before. Pulled the toilet, ran a 100' snake down the drain... When I brought it back, the last 3 feet had used tampons wrapped around it. "See! The plumbing sucks in this house!" She was gone within a week.

That they gunned down a good man in cold blood. Thing is -- that happens. I wouldn't appreciate it much, myself, -- but, then, I wouldn't like being run over while in a crosswalk by a semi that runs a red.....the question is whether those who did it will meet justice. The thing that the dimwitted "justice for Trayvon" idiots blow past is that Trayvon is beyond any justice on earth....that their cries are effectively "REVENGE for Trayvon" shows how vacant and unspiritual their "religious" leaders are.

Erik Scott was the victim of a grave injustice, and can only see recompense in the hereafter....but his killers should face every bit of justice in this life and the next. I understand the family's suit was abandoned, but Mosher, Mendiola, and Stark are still out there with blood on their hands.....and justice may find them.

617 There is actually a little "tool?" That you can get get a home depot or Lowes - basically a little bladder. Put it on your garden hose, cram it in the clogged pipe, and it'll expand, form a seal, then shoot high pressure water out of a tiny hole down the the drain. The thing actually works for minor clogs. On a related subject....we all know that San Francisco is one of the most seriously brain-damaged "progressive" bastions of leftwing idiocy.....but.....http://tinyurl.com/b4lg3h3 [note that sfgate is generally lefty]. Also note that a gallon of water weighs 8.35 pounds....so they're dumping 8.5M pounds of bleach into the system because they're not flushing 167M pounds of water. To put this another way -- you can have freshwater goldfish swim for quite a while in seawater and oceanic sharks can go significantly upstream in freshwater rivers.....but rather than use 20 pounds of freshwater to flush toilets, the City of San Francisco is dumping a pound of bleach into the works -- which neither sharks nor goldfish tolerate well.

628 I've had good luck filling a 2-quart pitcher with hot water (as hot as it gets) from the tub, and adding some dishwashing liquid as the pitcher fills, then pouring the pitcher down the problem drain. Aim accurately, to get the hot water into the drain, not on the sink , tub, or other. Repeat as needed. Wax seals seem to be unaffected, and porcelain fixtures seem undamaged, although I worry about thermal shock cracking something. No failures yet. Laundry detergent seems to not work as well; might be the grease-fighting content is much lower. Sometimes a drain snake helps. In any event, the hot soapy water takes a lot off the inside of the pipes.

the right way to do blind dates is to let only one of the two parties know.  that way, no pressure, no issues, no rejection, no offense to anyone.  If the one party that does know actually sees something they like, they can take the next step with, or without, the help of the party doing the set up in the first place.

638 Well, Purp, with the Necro's there will always be someone trying to take down the guy at the top, and with Riddick being a survivor, and  an avenger, rather than a conqueror there would be the potential for conflict there.

Yeah, the premise makes more sense if it's not the same planet... but, it wouldn't surprise me if they went back to the exact same well for a story.

Totally agreed on what made the character and the 1st film so good. Riddick was just another scumbag, though a highly capable one. I didn't hate "Chronicles", it had some good bits- Riddick's run in's with Tooms and Crematoria to a lesser extent... but the whole "Spacejesus" or "Space Highlander" was lame.

Yeah, they really painted themselves into a corner with the 2nd movie. I get that Riddick had an epiphany in PB, but there's no way his character would change THAT much. He'd squeeze that orange for every bit of juice he could get. A better sequel to the original would have been something along the lines of a small gang of similar scumbags to Riddick enlisting him to do a paid robbery/hit on some dangerous planet. That way you get him into the story without changing the character too much. He can still have some redemtion he earned from PB, but don't go nuts. Give him a worthy nemesis/rival that can gett the better of him, some monster chases and you could have a real hit sequel. But what with the whole Space Highlander thing inserted from "Chronicles"... you can't go that way with eye rolling.

I cannot see any situation where that would make any economic sense. Even if you had some kind of anti-gravity technology that made lifting a payload almost free, what use would the great majority of humans be to an orbital facility? Even if they were just being duped and only used as biomass, it would be far more efficient to ship them up as frozen corpses that don't need any costly life support infrastructure.

Dean Ing did a good story that appears in one of the Endless Frontier anthologies, 'Down and Out on L5 Prime.' It had some elements of Elysium but made far more sense. There were two ways you could live on the orbital: 1. Either be very wealthy and buy yourself a membership. This was mainly done by elderly people looking to extend their lives by living in reduced gravity.

Or 2. Be part of the personnel contingent running the place. But when you hit retirement you'd be shipped back to Earth to live in full gravity. So the third option was to fake your death and live in hiding. By the time of the narrative there is a substantial secret population the security chief helps stay hidden because he believe many of them have skills that would be valuable in an emergency. Plus he expects to join them someday.

The only time it has made sense to ship people elsewhere instead of simply kill them, if they became a liability due to criminality or just plain uselessness, is when they were useful to conquer new territory for you and eventually serve to help you exploit that new territory. Plenty of people who weren't Africans came to North America in chains in the pre-Revolution era. And we all know about Australia. The French Foreign Legion was another useful way to get rid of undesirables and have them kill foreign undesirables as a bonus.

If I were a more cynical man, I might suspect the end goal of our foreign policy in the Middle East was to foment a massive non-nuclear conflict that massively reduced the population but left enough intact to keep the useful stuff like oil production going.

Tanks 'sploding before the bowl are merely hazardous.....toilets 'sploding after the bowl are disgusting AND hazardous.

672 All of these new laws have set asides for marketing, etc. that are give to NGO's...like La Raza, ACORN, and smart young social entrepreneurs who amass fortunes on the tax payer teat. Then, these groups recycle some of your taxpayer money to the Democrats as donations. Worse yet, they keep useful activists with jobs during off election years...then they are available as foot soldiers during elections. This is one reason the Left will keep winning. We are funding their campaigns.

We have have bred a new race of political Special Snowflakes who feel themselves entitled to the front of the line at the Government Teat.

First among them is Choom Boy who, if he were ever to engage in a moment of honesty, would have to credit affirmative action and massive white guilt for his success. None of it came from hard work, that's for damn sure.

674 As a follow-up to the above comment, and indulging in a Poppin' Fresh-style moment of Fairness, I should clarify. Some of President Historic First's© triumphs over the traditional, Constitutional American Way were due to hard work.

Other people's hard work....

675 "But dude! The political/social subtext is bitchin'! Greedy racist capitalists living in luxury high above(aka a tower)the 99% and shit. They're evil. They get their kicks keeping the underclass (aka minorities) down. You can't apply "logic" to the 1%.If you get caught up trying to do scifi, you mess up the slavery + oppression + capitalism subtext, dude. Gah! Posted by: otho at July 21, 2013 02:39 AM (9gNQd)" It's basically the opposite idea of Mobile Suit Gundam where the rich built lots of huge O'Neil Island III type orbital habitats and kicked the poor out into space to live there and kept the earth for themselves supposedly to help it recover from ecological damage. The little people shunted off into space mine asteroids and grow their own food and help bring in Helium 3 from Jupiter. Eventually one of the nations made up of colonies at Side 3 (in one of the lagrange points) develop their own semi-mystical "grievance/utopia project" politics that says that "earthnoids" are corrupt and "Spacenoids" should go take the Earth back and they so they start a war that kills about half the total human population. The Earth has a corrupt UN globalist pseudo-democratic feel and the Spacenoids are more "will to power" and maybe a little bit fuedal/imperial". The Spacenoids take over lots of space colonies and about half the earth before the Earth gov can react effectively. Both sides use nukes and gas. The death rate is so high that they sign a treaty in Antarctica not to use nukes and gas, and things calm down a little until to try and force a surrender, the spacenoids drop a whole empty space colony on Australia restarting the war in earnest. The Earth forces develop giant robots (spacenoids had them first) and accidently get psychic kids to pilot them. The spacenoids try to prevent this and so attack neutral colonies where the robots prototypes and a carrier prototype are being tested. The kids in the colony are taken aboard the carrier as refugees and when most of the senior crew is killed are pressed into service as crew. When it becomes clear that the spacenoids are chasing the carrier the Earth gov decides to use it as a distraction and refuses to get the civilians off of the ship and instead sends them munitions and makes the kids "acting" military. Without much choice they learn to fight spacenoids. The whole point of the series is that both sides are wrong in their own special way, and that wars are generally not about morality just the desires of two opposing forces and that the casualties can be horrendous. Heh.

They couldn't resist having the hero be a proxy for Hollywood liberals I guess. Egocentric bastards. Cakefinger, Mobile Suit Gundam was also basically supposed to be World War II in space.
