I think we now know why La Raza wants nothing to do with standing up for an exonerated hispanic man. Via dri in the sidebar, $300 million in slush funds for immigration rights groups. Cash and political power trumps standing by someone who they're supposed to support. At least according to their website. Are those just words? Spying Pop Quiz
This will be a bit more challenging than last weeks pop quiz. How well do you know the world of spying? Take the CIA/NSA quiz.
Candy Profiling

This candy profiling is out of control. First it was Skittles and now it's Snickers.
Drone Hunting Season

I guess those fake CA drone highway patrol signs spooked some folks.Colorado town to consider drone hunting license, bounty. Take that Skynet but I think the Hellfire missile wins. And maybe the FAA as they warn folks not to shoot at drones.
If Idioms Were Real
Play Date Consultants
Damn I'm in the wrong line of work. $400/Hour "play date" consultants for rich kids who suck at playing with others.
Sex Addiction

I wasn't buying the addiction part anyway. New brain study questions existence of "sexual addiction".
We found that the brainÂ’s response to sexual pictures was not predicted by any of three different questionnaire measures of hypersexuality. Brain response was only predicted by a measure of sexual desire. In other words, hypersexuality does not appear to explain brain differences in sexual response any more than just having a high libido.
In related news, the "I have a headache" excuse won't work anymore as science determines that sex is better for headaches than painkillers.
Facials

Of course it's from Japan. You 'ettes ready for some snail facials?
Doomsday Prep

Somehow, I don't think I'll be able to qualify but a Merkava tank would be pretty kick-ass thing to have. Israel to sell F-16's and Merkava tanks at auction.

God help me for saying this, but Matthew Yglasias has a pretty decent article in the amateur webzine Slate about why it should be easier for cities to go bankrupt. Short version: it would make it harder for politicians to make long term promises (such as fat pensions or stadium deals) that they won't be around to deal with.

My wife and I have looked at the site on multiple occasions. There are actually some fairly inexpensive islands that you can purchase if you are so inclined, including some that are developed and come with existing houses, multiple cabins, boat docks, running utilities, etc. I've actually spoken to some of my family members about pooling our money to buy a family compound on an island advertised on that site.

Oddly, I've never had that much of a problem working on toilets (knocks wood). Stuff I hate is working with stuff that goes through the deck, like faucets, filtered-water faucets, air gaps, etc., 'cause I'm usually working alone. So it's get up, clamp the faucet against a board or something, go underneath, turn the knob that holds it until I see the unit turn,,,,get up, rotate the thing right, brace it better, repeat..... I really, really, really hate that -- especially with the limited space to work behind the sink and the horrible lighting.

My best friend had this happen between he and his wife twice. They weren't as close to delivery, but it was a traumatic experience. (of course) Their Faith in God actually guided me through their loss both times.
When I spoke to he and his wife, three weeks after the second miscarriage...
Three Weeks!, this beautiful woman had let the tears to flow in private and within our blessed family, enough to allow the beautiful child's passage into Heaven.
I'd like to tell that we ate cookies and "didn't worry", but we all cried together. I was Blessed to have this friend and his wife to allow me to share their solemn grief. They'd driven from Chicago to Cleveland.
I love this man and his family. They've loved me through tough times. They deserve to see me cry and love and try to compose myself as I wiped snot off my sleeve and changed clothes.
They lost two beautiful children. One boy, one girl. I grieve for them at this moment.
They'll never forget it. I'll never forget it.
I pray for the unborn. I pray that the community beyond us understands the desperate loss that may entail.
I pray for your friends, BC. Upon my knees, I --without losing a child of my own-- understand the grief of the innocents' passing.
Our Lord holds the most innocent closest. His Will be done and His bosom awaits those, who are amongst the most innocent. Those whose passing is beyond our wisest and most talented.
There is a special place for these children. His children. For they shall be Angels amongst us, forever.
God Bless You. God Bless the Children.
...all of them
*Amen*

Totally OT but, how do you bake bacon in the oven? Thanks.
350 degrees, lay strips of bacon on a baking sheet, put sheet in oven. Occasionally pour off the grease that's rendered out into a measuring glass and let it cool before storing in a container for use later.

- Bacon
- Val-U-Rite Vodka
- Bacon
- Porterhouse steaks
- Bacon
- Baby back ribs and other various quality pork products
- Bacon
- Dr. Pepper
- Bacon
...and of course, there's the ever-present bacon.

It was a business dinner with a bunch of Chinese lawyers. Except for the food, it was pretty cool. The restaurant was in a colonial-era Italianate villa that had a collection of ancient weaponry and relics that most US. curators would have given their firstborn to have on display in their museum.

Yeah it looks like they're going back to the well of the first movie. It looks to be a better flick than most of the crap being made these days and should be entertaining at least. But, PB worked so well for a number of reasons, most of which didn't rely on Riddick as more than part of the story. I don't think it was wise to ever try to do sequels. For example, one of the major factors that made PB work, was the characters, most importantly the Johns vs Riddick thing. Johns was every bit the equal of Riddick, in PB. That dynamic was missing in "Chronicles", though Nick Chinlund's character offered potential, but was lost in the overblown Galactic messiah/Necronger stuff. This one looks to go back to the original, with the best part of "chronicles"... It will rely on how the characters work and will require a cracking script.

Set the oven to 350. Spread the bacon across a "cooling rack", or something otherwise "wired". Put a baking sheet underneath. Give it about 30-45 min., (depending on your oven's reliability).
Let cool for as long as you can stand it.
Eat.

In years past, I would wake up, check the GOESWEST SAT load the 4X4 with water, trail mix. Vid Cam and the deep desire to be in the middle of one of nature's pure FIREWORKS show by 2 p.m. My wife....never amused by the prep would always ask that wifey...."WHY!!"
My response..."WIFE!!!!.....AT LEAST I"M NOT INTO PONY"S OR STRIP CLUBS...and it cost us only gas for my pleasure........"REALLY????"
She often enjoyed the vids that I captured.....

How much does it take to start/buy a cable channel? A SciFi channel with SciFi and not slasher/horror, Science channel, a conservative channel with ideology/philosophy and news. and it would have to be with 'vertical integration' where you own the script/writing, production, and distribution.
And that Riddick thing? Why would he go back to that monster planet, and it would have to be before the necromongers, because what is he going to do after the necros?
Ya, I know, with 141 mill, you can barely do one movie.

Chopsticks -- I taught myself how to use them as a teen, but face it, a fork is a superior piece of technology. Yet the spork is just a cheap ass way to avoid giving you 3 disposable utensils with your meal. It's a spoon with fangs, not a fork.

Every so often, I get a horrible urge to construct a machine that sits very low and kicks a cheapie kid's toy ball out across the street. Mount it in front of a car's front bumper, stick a speed sensor on the back bumper, and reload as necessary.
If a couple of balls get popped, who cares? Of course, you'd probably have some idiot swerve into a telephone pole, break his neck, get paralyzed, burst into flame, be burned beyond recognition, yet still survive and sue you for assault with a deadly beachball.....

For less than $10 million I would pay off all the major debts of my family and friends. For less than $10 million I would set up endowment plans for family and friends that would allow them to continue their present lifestyles (since they wouldn't owe any more debts) and make their own choice about working.
For about $2 million I would set up my own endowment and quit my job.
The rest I would spend on propaganda and try to give every leftist in the world enough heartburn to make them pass blood from every port, hole and pore in their bodies. No mercy -- just brutal verbal and written beatings about every part of their bullshit.

It looks like Matt Damon is trying to raid the last bastion of civilization that has successfully cordoned itself off from the socialist wasteland of Earth. Or at least that's what I'm reading into it. There's certainly a whole lot of "we gotta stick it to them because they aren't sharing" in the previews I've seen.
Also, the effort to make Damon look like a badass by grafting him into power armor fails for me. YMMV.

I think it's the one with the baby performing remarkable feats while the parents go insane over the very existence of Pepsi Next.
There is a whole category of ads I loathe which seek to entice by showing people driven insane by the product or the lack of it. In a less politically correct era we had Sonny the Cocoa Puffs Cuckoo, who was subject to mania triggered by the breakfast cereal. He was eventually removed from TV, either after he was finally beaten to death by cops or institutionalized.
But the stream of mentally shattered people in advertising has continued.

I was brave and tried snails for the first time last weekend, at a Bastille Day (aka downtown merchants marketing shit) celebration. They tasted like sauteed portobello mushrooms - quite tasty. I think the frogs have a rep for being great chefs because they figured out that if you saute anything, even mice, in garlic and butter and wine and serve it with a big hunk of French bread, it'll taste good.
It didn't compare with the other two things I had there - the only reasons I go to that festival every year. A frozen margarita made with Chamboud liquor and a crepe filled with chocolate mousse and covered with caramel, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. My taste buds had an orgasm.

Like all of Neil Blomkomp's stories, it doesn't pass the most basic analysis for believability and just asks the viewer to shut off their mind while the director gets on with his grievance mongering.
The idea that such a paradise could be created in orbit requires some fantastic advances in launch capability, deep space mining, or both, along with some other progress. With this amazing capability and stunning wealth, why would the Earth be allowed to continue as such a shithole. Leaving aside why it got that way and why the wealthy in the orbital cannot be bothered to do anything about it, why would they just abandon the most valuable real estate in the solar system? Wouldn't they set about radically reducing the population and set about repairing the place, to take advantage of an environment that is fantastically more friendly to life than the most luxurious orbital colony?

That they gunned down a good man in cold blood. Thing is -- that happens. I wouldn't appreciate it much, myself, -- but, then, I wouldn't like being run over while in a crosswalk by a semi that runs a red.....the question is whether those who did it will meet justice. The thing that the dimwitted "justice for Trayvon" idiots blow past is that Trayvon is beyond any justice on earth....that their cries are effectively "REVENGE for Trayvon" shows how vacant and unspiritual their "religious" leaders are.
Erik Scott was the victim of a grave injustice, and can only see recompense in the hereafter....but his killers should face every bit of justice in this life and the next. I understand the family's suit was abandoned, but Mosher, Mendiola, and Stark are still out there with blood on their hands.....and justice may find them.

On a related subject....we all know that San Francisco is one of the most seriously brain-damaged "progressive" bastions of leftwing idiocy.....but.....http://tinyurl.com/b4lg3h3 [note that sfgate is generally lefty]. Also note that a gallon of water weighs 8.35 pounds....so they're dumping 8.5M pounds of bleach into the system because they're not flushing 167M pounds of water. To put this another way -- you can have freshwater goldfish swim for quite a while in seawater and oceanic sharks can go significantly upstream in freshwater rivers.....but rather than use 20 pounds of freshwater to flush toilets, the City of San Francisco is dumping a pound of bleach into the works -- which neither sharks nor goldfish tolerate well.

the right way to do blind dates is to let only one of the two parties know. that way, no pressure, no issues, no rejection, no offense to anyone. If the one party that does know actually sees something they like, they can take the next step with, or without, the help of the party doing the set up in the first place.

The monsters look vaguely similar... like a hippo looks like an elephant. It makes sense it's supposed to be the same place, what with the whole "afraid of the dark" line. Yeah, the premise makes more sense if it's not the same planet... but, it wouldn't surprise me if they went back to the exact same well for a story.
Totally agreed on what made the character and the 1st film so good. Riddick was just another scumbag, though a highly capable one. I didn't hate "Chronicles", it had some good bits- Riddick's run in's with Tooms and Crematoria to a lesser extent... but the whole "Spacejesus" or "Space Highlander" was lame.

Yeah, they really painted themselves into a corner with the 2nd movie. I get that Riddick had an epiphany in PB, but there's no way his character would change THAT much. He'd squeeze that orange for every bit of juice he could get. A better sequel to the original would have been something along the lines of a small gang of similar scumbags to Riddick enlisting him to do a paid robbery/hit on some dangerous planet. That way you get him into the story without changing the character too much. He can still have some redemtion he earned from PB, but don't go nuts. Give him a worthy nemesis/rival that can gett the better of him, some monster chases and you could have a real hit sequel. But what with the whole Space Highlander thing inserted from "Chronicles"... you can't go that way with eye rolling.

I cannot see any situation where that would make any economic sense. Even if you had some kind of anti-gravity technology that made lifting a payload almost free, what use would the great majority of humans be to an orbital facility? Even if they were just being duped and only used as biomass, it would be far more efficient to ship them up as frozen corpses that don't need any costly life support infrastructure.
Dean Ing did a good story that appears in one of the Endless Frontier anthologies, 'Down and Out on L5 Prime.' It had some elements of Elysium but made far more sense. There were two ways you could live on the orbital: 1. Either be very wealthy and buy yourself a membership. This was mainly done by elderly people looking to extend their lives by living in reduced gravity.
Or 2. Be part of the personnel contingent running the place. But when you hit retirement you'd be shipped back to Earth to live in full gravity. So the third option was to fake your death and live in hiding. By the time of the narrative there is a substantial secret population the security chief helps stay hidden because he believe many of them have skills that would be valuable in an emergency. Plus he expects to join them someday.
The only time it has made sense to ship people elsewhere instead of simply kill them, if they became a liability due to criminality or just plain uselessness, is when they were useful to conquer new territory for you and eventually serve to help you exploit that new territory. Plenty of people who weren't Africans came to North America in chains in the pre-Revolution era. And we all know about Australia. The French Foreign Legion was another useful way to get rid of undesirables and have them kill foreign undesirables as a bonus.
If I were a more cynical man, I might suspect the end goal of our foreign policy in the Middle East was to foment a massive non-nuclear conflict that massively reduced the population but left enough intact to keep the useful stuff like oil production going.

The maguffin as far I recall was that the Necromonger made the prophecy come true by their reaction creating the events that made Riddick that person he became. Without the Necromongers' preemptive action there would never have been a threat.

Tanks 'sploding before the bowl are merely hazardous.....toilets 'sploding after the bowl are disgusting AND hazardous.

We have have bred a new race of political Special Snowflakes who feel themselves entitled to the front of the line at the Government Teat.
First among them is Choom Boy who, if he were ever to engage in a moment of honesty, would have to credit affirmative action and massive white guilt for his success. None of it came from hard work, that's for damn sure.
