Overnight Open Thread (21 Dec 2013)
— CDR M

Welcome to the longest night of the year morons. Ah, the first day of winter and it was friggin' over 70 degrees today. So nice. Sadly, it will get cold again in a few days. Well no white Christmas for me but the rest of you can see if you might have a chance for a white Christmas. Santa Reindeer Question

This is a good question for the horde. Are Santa's reindeer used for propulsion or navigation?

Ridiculous Inventions

Wooden swimsuits. A kinder, gentler form of barrel punishment I presume.

Pretty cool to look at some ridiculous inventions from the past.

Of course, the Japanese have been inventing some crazy stuff for awhile now but the Robot Restaurant might have to be visited.

We're told each show is different but they are all broken up into various scenes, and only one of those I saw had any semblance of a story. It involved invading (extraterrestrial?) robots who battle against pandas and animal deities. Beyond that, none of it made sense. A giant LED tank rolls in. Segway robots dance to Daft Punk. And girls in armored bikinis ride atop fem-bots. What more could you possibly want? Glowsticks? Those are included with admission.

8 I see four young black men have been arrested in NJ for the execution of a 30-year old patent attorney in front of his wife so they could steal their Range Rover. Shocked face: O_O Really, where do these poor abused youths get the impression they can act like this without repercussions? They should be whipped and then hung, and so should their media and government enablers.

The Reindeer are for both navigation and propulsion. Every time you see them, they are clearly moving their feet and turning one direction or the other.

31 70 degrees today here in the ATL. Muggy day spent doing the family dinner thing. We went to the his parents house. Grandpa is almost 80, takes blood thinner, wears short sleeve shirts, refuses to wear socks or slippers inside the house, and complains about his natural gas bill. It makes for a fun afternoon. 41 Good evening horde! Tonight, I have the special privilege of ONT'ing from Raleigh Durham International's USO. The wife and I are volunteering tonight to help out with the Christmas rush. We made a big pot of beef stew and took that with us to serve to the men and women staying at the USO overnight. I have been busy making coffee, serving food, making sandwiches, and I also had the honor of carrying a young Marine's "body bag" to his connecting flight. He had a giant duffel bag, two large bags in each hand, and his suit bag (body bag), and I have no idea how he carried all that up to the USO. But I helped him carry it back down. Lots of Marines and army people coming through. No Air Force or navy yet. Lights out. http://i42.tinypic.com/2pq10mq.jpg Volunteer of the year! http://i39.tinypic.com/oksvx2.jpg

81 I couldn't sleep last night because my brain was spinning out of control. These profoundly stupid thoughts passed through my brain. 1. Could the gay fascists force Duck Commanders to make and sell a penis-shaped duck call, with instructions to suck not blow. This would be for the use of gay duck hunters. I couldn't figure out how to tell if a duck is gay. 2. I've watched a couple of episodes of Duck Dynasty since the controversy erupted and liked it. Willie's wife is kinda hot in a Christian country lady way. I would have had a crush on her if she'd ever been my Sunday school teacher. 3. Political debate and commentary would be improved if duelling would be legalized. Failing that frontier justice hockey style would definitely be helpful. So say Fat Eddie Schultz says something vile about Sarah Palin Todd Palin or a designates Palin family goon could jump him and punch his lights out. The penalty would be five minutes for fighting. 4. Beat Harry Reid with a stick day would be a good thing. Then I fell asleep. Now back to your moron programming.

Unfortunately they werenÂ’t as inexpensive as the sunflower seeds.

180 When it started out the original Whole Foods had good sandwiches and smoothies and my sister liked to get wheat grass juice (yuck). Took my kids (about 10 and 11) one time and my daughter kicked me under the table as we ate our sandwiches. She darted her eyes to the two ladies sitting at the table on our right. "Dad," she whispered, "look at her legs."   The one lady had the nicest shortish skirt on and a good crop of fur growing on her legs.  OK, tales all kinds, I guess.

It's almost certainly wrong (probably omitting pension costs, etc.) but here's an info-widget about state debt per capita. http://tinyurl.com/38ygzk8 Note that CA has $2362, where if you were in TN, it's only $318. Also note that dividing CA into six states and dividing the debt six ways wouldn't necessarily change the debt per capita in predictable ways -- if your new state got 1/6 the debt but had more than 1/6 the people, your per capita debt would decrease.

190 As I said in the morning thread: It's snowed several times here in the last couple of weeks, but it warmed up since Thursday. It's supposed to get into the 60s tomorrow with rain. So all of that lovely snow will be gone just in time for Christmas.

Posted by: rickl at December 21, 2013 07:45 PM (sdi6R)

191 @181 I'm not completely against ice-creepers, but they're not a cure-all.
Number One, take them off before you come in the house -- or onto a painted porch or any other finished surface, like a deck or most patios. Sounds easy, but in the heat of action, men may be inclined...

The sandpaper-bottom ones wear out right away once you're not on ice. Beware.
The ones with stabby bits carry their own hazards. Need one say more.

But the biggest thing is, you can still hurt yourself. Slip just a bit, then suddenly regain traction, and a pulled back muscle is almost guaranteed. The Postal Service reports more injuries from slips without a fall than from slips and falls.

So, you use them when everything is glazed, and they're a big help. When conditions are mixed, ice + snow are all right but ice + anything else will give you a frustrating time of putting on, taking off, over and over. No dancing.

Try that brand. They arenÂ’t ugly either, they look somewhat nice with very skinny leg jeans. I donÂ’t like to change shoes, etc. Once I have them on they stay on.

Might have passed you in the hall of the hospital during that field problem. Got smacked in the face with a chain unloading a vehicle, spend a few hours there with a lacerated eyeball. 266 Here's a puzzler for anyone interested. Purp you out there?

1. lately my regular home page has been starting very slow. I've used this site for some time and it usually loads quite quickly as it's very simple.

2. It's not the connection or the browser because once I get on, I can access other websites no problem.

3. If I switch my home page to another, they load quickly also when starting up. And (get this) once I'm on, I can load the regular home page with no problem of being slow.

4. I can then load the regular home page without problem from then on.

5. If I change the homepage back and then quit and then load the browser again, I have the same problem.

I can't figure out what's happening unless it's a lag somehow in my logging onto a dns server for that regular page then once I'm on, I can log on okay.

It's weird.

NSA? Microsoft screwing with me? I dunno.

A spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Police confirmed the incident, and explained that most times when sealed bags of heroin are found, they are stamped with a branding so that the strain can be identified.

I know that deal. Every time I had to endure the nutcracker was because of some chick I was with at the time who happened to be in ballet and was dancing it. I thought I escaped it with the wife, who I found out later was also in ballet as a kid, and to my chagrin decided to get back into it. I got dragged to the nutcracker once again to see the younger kids do it when the wife's ballet school did their christmas show.  I started calling it the ballbreaker.

Posted by: Zombie Chuckles, Santa's mindful webworker at December 21, 2013 09:38 PM (pJB7q)

296 As I've mentioned previously, this Duck Dynasty thing just reeks of being similar to the Rural Purge of American TV networks in 1969-1972. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rural_purge

And there's been this thing about how these shows were popular, but didn't have the right demographics -- according to the networks, they needed to appeal more toward younger viewers....and that's where it stops. But, since the DD fiasco has got me thinking about it, why would TV shows want more youngsters viewing? It's not like they have any money -- and what say do they have in buying laundry detergent? They'll use whatever mom used, when and if they ever move out. Hell, I'm still using products I learned about from the girl I lived-with in college.

And then there's the time frame of the earlier purge.....and it seems like the whole "capture the youth demographic" thing might be "capture the young before they develop critical thinking skills". Maybe the Rural Purge was a Gramscian coup. "We can't show solid rural folks that people want to relate to.....we need to make everyone want to be a pajama-wearing hipster douchebag."

During the original purge, several shows continued in syndication -- sometimes for years. They had draw.....but there were only three major networks at the time, so once you'd Fred Silverman'd all three, you had a lock on content.

And look at the sort of thing that replaced the purged....Mary Tyler Moore -- "move to city, be happy!"; All in the Family -- "old folks are bigots"; M*A*S*H -- "you can be a hipster douchebag even in the middle of a war". We all know there are product placements in movies, these sound like hipster-douchebag meme placements.

335 Of course, I'm the kind of guy who thinks about installing anti-speeding devices in my neighborhood. Remember the little putting practice thingies, where you putted a golf-ball into a device where it went up a little ramp and then got kicked back to you by a piston? Here's one -- http://tinyurl.com/myhetdk

Anyway, park two large cars on each side of the street; set up two larger versions of the putt-returner in between the cars on each side, so as to be invisible from both directions; and rig speed radar to kick a cheap child's play ball from one side of the street to the other whenever someone's doing 35+ in a 25 zone.

You'd obviously lose a lot of the balls, and possibly gain a few dings in the cars, but that'd get a gut reaction that the little "your speed" trailers won't.

The idea is for someone to think that a kid just kicked the ball out there and might be running out behind it. If you toss out a dummy hand grenade, someone might think there's a Taliban running out behind it and speed up.

Actually, that recalls an incident from my youth. So, I was mightily attached to this gf when I was in college and elected to spend the summer with her at her dad's place (in a travel trailer). She had two younger brothers. While I was there, the eldest brother was riding in a car with his friend and some kids down the street threw some "dirt clods" (those of you from adobe territory know about these) that scratched the paint on the friend's car.

Enraged, the brother brother zipped back to the house, grabbed a rattlesnake he'd been keeping in a terrarium in his closet (which nobody else in the house had known about), drove down to the kids, and chucked it at them -- thus anticipating "The Untouchables" by about seven years ["if they throw a dirt-clod, you throw a rattlesnake....]. While this disrupted the "smirky kids throwing dirt-clods" thing, it was probably not as dangerous as it sounds because (a) everyone involved knew what a rattlesnake was, and (b) rattlesnakes are not apt to bite while in the air or immediately after hitting the ground....but word got out.

And the phone calls started coming in. I remember the dad getting half a dozen calls and building up QUITE the towering rage. Anyway, brother got a plethora of the usual teenage punishments -- extra chores, grounded, no allowance, curfew....the usual. He came up with the best tag line for the whole affair: "Dammit, I should've slit the snake's throat before chuckin' it....'cause then, the worst charge I'd face would be 'assault with a dead weapon.'"

There was a link to a Havana travelogue by Michael Totten [ http://tinyurl.com/mxryj69 ] a couple of weeks ago. In it, it talks about being ground down to the point where, "I never felt so alone in my life." Search that, and start reading a few inches up....and it starts to make the case that a society of Purged Viewers might be a necessary precursor to a totalitarian state.

"Bad News Bears" is a good movie. Very well executed story. It's not hard to see why it worked so well. The writer did such an outstanding job of characterization and propelling the story with a minimum of fat, that he was given the job of doing "The Thing", another highly regarded script. Bill Lancaster was also Burt's son, IIRC.

She's still around -- http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001575/?ref_=tt_cl_t2 -- and in the biz. Incidentally, she's almost exactly one year younger than I am (off by 2 days), so I tend to notice her. It's too bad they didn't finish filming Addie Pray -- they quit just as the novel got fun. Nowadays a Peter Jackson would make a six-film deal out of the thing.

Posted by: BornLib at December 22, 2013 05:04 AM (zpNwC)

I'm going to take this as a serious question, despite impulses toward a "flip" answer. To begin with, the US and all of its states are not democracies -- they're republics, and this is a very, very, very good thing. Democracy (AKA "majority rule") leads inevitably to schism, where you find an issue that divides voters 60/40......then you *liquidate the minority* and schism again. The next issue goes 51/49, then you *liquidate the minority* and schism again....and you end up with 60% of 51% of 55% of 60% of 70% of 80% of 90% running the state....depending not on the appeal within the original population, but rather the selection of wedge issues along the way.

One of the simplest schisms to exploit is city/countryside....and, sure enough, we see a bunch of that. Most cities are very blue, most countryside very red.

The problem with California legislatures is that they are based more on popular votes (democracy) than on fundamental rights. Accordingly, they are overwhelmingly swayed by urban Democrats to the disadvantage of the nation.

396 Hello 'rons and 'rettes. I got back a couple of hours ago from the Christmas Gaskell ball in Oakland (Victorian-themed, though I was dressed 1740-ish). Surfing the net and now to get a few minutes of keyboard playing in before the Big Sleep.

406 Really fucking loud (30+ people packed into a house with hardwood floors), but good. Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk That's just like mine too. The first time I took my wife, (her family was a total of 4 people) she was completely shell shocked. Posted by: traye at December 21, 2013 10:21 PM (QhNjm) Roles were reversed for me and the lovely future Mrs. Cop: she has 7 siblings and I just have a brother (plus my old man was career Navy, so my aunt and uncles were usually far away). The first words to one of my future sisters-in-law was she "didn't know what the f**k she was talking about." My future mother-in-law overheard me and told Mrs. Cop that I was going to fit right in!

407 I'm in green. Yet I look out the window and see nothing but snow as far as the eye can see. I don't see it melting in 2 days.
