Overnight Open Thread (21 June 2013)
— CDR M

As of 0104 this morning, it is now officially summer. Enjoy it morons. Daylight only gets shorter from now on.

There is something missing in this article on why an increase in border patrol agents has corresponded with a decrease in apprehensions and removals. I don't know, maybe it was a no-apprehension policy? I'd sure like to know the number of "turn back south" (TBS) incidents. Moron Meetup Tonight

I have it on good authority that this is what is happening at the NorVA meetup tonight. And probably some basic debauchery. I'm hopeful we'll get updates in the comments.

Sue And Settle

Beware of the back-door EPA effort to impose cap-and-trade on gasoline.

Sue-and-Settle is an abuse of the regulatory process that is frequently used by Big Green environmental groups to force implementation of costly new standards and regulations.

Here's how it works: A group threatens to sue EPA over what it asserts to be a failure to issue rules required meet a statutory obligation. The group then meets with EPA in closed-door negotiations that result in a court-approved "settlement," in which EPA agrees to go through with the rules.

Of course, the particular rulemaking is usually one that the American people are vehemently against -- which is precisely why environmental groups prefer Sue-and-Settle: it occurs outside the legislative process, behind closed doors, with little or no participation from the very businesses and consumers who ultimately foot the bill.

60 such deals have occurred between 2009 and 2011. Can we defund the EPA now?

Miss USA Financial Tips

I'm going to go ahead and nominate her to replace Ben Bernake. Miss USA's Three Top Tips For Saving Money. Pretty basic stuff really but damn, if she was in charge of the Fed, I'd watch every FOMC meeting.

Most Violent US Cities

Top 5 all run by democrats.

The economies of many of the most dangerous cities have been in bad shape for years, in some cases long before the Great Recession.

Yup. They keep voting for the same and in many cases, for decades. Can't fix stupid.

Tonight's Dessert

Oh my. I gotta have this. Chocolate-dipped coffee ice cream doughnut sandwiches. Just needs a little bacon.

Dog Grooming

Dogs groomed to look like fictional characters and wild animals.

Was that the "Red Wedding" episode? Martin is notorious for killing off main characters, so if you can't handle that....

I only read one of the books and wasn't really interested in reading any more - It was one vast orgy of sex and murder (little actual fighting) with no one to cheer for.

52 Saw World War Z today. You'll probably enjoy it if you forget the book. The Bitey Kamekazi Zombies work well and make more sense than the slow-joe zombies as an unstoppable world-wide plague. Great set pieces that are full of tension and fear. Weak third act - but they had to end the movie somehow and meet the demands of story. Also the PG-13 rating was a mistake, I think. zombie attacks should be bloody and gruesome. Killing of zombies the same.* *SLIGHT SPOILER: But I think they thought they could get away with less blood because the "plague" is more like the behavioral modification you see with some parasites. The zombies aren't trying to eat people so much as they are trying to bite and spread the plague. SLIGHT SPOILER OVER Anyway I was entertained.

85 The Double Standard for 501(c)(3) Groups With the IRS targeting Tea Party groups, as well as any group that wanted to educate people about, the contrast with left leaning groups is indeed stark. The putative reason the IRS targeted these Tea Party groups was allegedly because such groups were thought to engage in politics… which the IRS investigated by harassing people and demanding to know the content of their prayers. The “Getting Gay With Kids” knock-off Earth Guardians, have already been mentioned as a 501(c)(3) that openly engages in political activism with impunity. James Taranto, of the Wall Street Journal, takes note of a much larger 501(c)(3) that engages in political shenanigans: The California Endowment. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=2441

94 An alternative to WWZ is a new comic series by the original WWZ author, Max Brooks. 'The Extinction Parade' is a zombie apocalypse as viewed by vampires. They regard the zombies with contempt and have nothing to fear from them as they are effectively non-existent to zombie perception.

But if the zombie wipe out humankind, that is a bit of a problem for the vampires.

101 Is anyone watching "Hannibal"? I started watching it with not much hope but it's actually turning out to be one of the best shows on television right now. Great acting. Very good to great writing. Looks like a dang movie- great directing and cinematography. It does suffer a bit from introducing too many serial killers into the mix. It did start a little slow, but that was because they first wanted us to see Hannibal as the other characters see him- a respected psychiatrist. If you have cable all of the shows can be seen with VOD, and the season just finished so you don't have to wait to see how the season ends. Great ending by the way. Check it out.

Posted by: Tobacco Road at June 21, 2013 10:34 PM (4Mv1T) I shot IDPA w/ IWB for 3 years. All it did was rub the skin off my side. I carry IWB but shoot matches OWB. The draw stroke is the same and I don't have a football sized rasberry on my hip. If you do shoot matches IWB make sure the IWB holster will not collapse when the gun is out of it. Collapsed holsters are kinda dangerous to put a Glock or XD or M&P back into. folks tend to hit the bang switch with colapsed holsters.

146 TripleMania happened this weekend. TripleMania is the Mexican version of WrestleMania. It's run by AAA (one of Mexico's two big wrestling promotions). One funny bit is one match featured the American Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett's been everywhere (WWF/E, WCE, founded TNA). He's old now and doesn't wrestle much, but once a year or so since 2011 he shows up in Mexico to play the bad guy American. TripleMania he fought a 6 man tag team match against Los Pyscho Circus -- which is 3 dudes dressed up Mexican psycho clowns. Just picture normal psycho clowns, but with sombreros and ponchos. That's not a joke, that's exactly how they were dressed. Their names are Monster Clown, Psycho Clown, and Murder Clown. Why are their names in English? No idea. Oh, they are also wearing Mexican flags. They are patriotic psycho murder clowns. Anyway, Jarrett cut a promo leading up to TripleMania about how he's sick of Mexicans sneaking into America so he's gonna go down to Mexico City and personally kick some wetback ass. At the show he gets introduced and he comes out wearing an American flag cape and carrying a bag. He spits at all the Mexican fans then reaches into his bag which is filled with tortillas which he sniffs in disgust and then starts throwing at the crowd. Crowd started throwing their popcorn and drinks back at him. He actually ended up winning, by cheating, and covering the psycho clowns with the American flag. Some good old fashioned wrestling. Some nice racist angles and the crowd got to boo the evil foreigner gringo. Family entertainment.

187 Wal-Mart always has 7mm ammo (and 410...) and I always wondered what took 7mm ammo.
-------------

Presumably you mean 7mm Magnum. The .280 Remington has been referred to as the 7mm Remington Express, though I do not know if cartridges were ever packaged that way. The .280 is no laughing matter, as it is suitable for any N. American game. The 7mm mag is different, of course. I am now curious which ammo it is that you have seen.

188 183 166 I know. Why do they want this house so much? I asked my realtor if they were related to the original owner from when it was built in 1945. It's a young couple expecting their first child. They must be nuts. ------------ Maybe they believe that Grandpa really did hide his life savings under the floorboards or in the backyard? I feel kind of bad for making that treasure map and giving it to my gullible cousin, now...

210 7mm Remington Magnum is a belted case, necked down .375H&H I think. Necked down to .284/7mm You can shoot a 7mm Mag in a .300 Win Mag. The .280/7mm Remington express is a .30-06 necked down to .284/7mm the .280 gets no love generally but it is a fine shooter. My neighbor busted an elk with one at 504 yards. cuz I'd been working with him on long range shooting the elk dropped on the first shot

310 I realize the .22LR ammunition is ammunition, but it's a poor defense round, and only good for very small game. I see tools, fuel and materials being useful trade goods. Stuff like skil-saw, chop saw and circular saw blades, drill bits, reloading dies, construction nails, roofing nails, propane and butane cartridges, glue (mostly epoxy) and caulk.

312 The anecdote, is, is... My sister and her family came over for a weekend, for her son's baseball tourneys. Little did I know she was planning to bring her two mutts with her. They're chihuahua plus something large breed that that she got from the pound, and they're cuter than shit! I hate small dogs, but these ones act like big dogs, and they're awesome. Anyway, the kitty hasn't forgiven me since. We used to snuggle on the couch every night, and now she avoids it because the doggies were there. She still sleeps with me, though. But I miss the snuggles.

Posted by: Kalneva at June 21, 2013 07:41 PM (XyrkB)

313 Yeah, but if you had to use .22LR as "coins in your pocket", today; what's the cash equivalent?
---------------------------
There is no available fixed value. I think it depends on what you are trading for and what the person on the opposite side of the deal had to pay or barter for last time they acquired 22LR.

It has been an eye opener to me to see the barter dynamic in the past 6 months as I have traded ammo, guns and gear. Plus cash has greater value than barter...today. For instance I have seen items for sale where the cash sale value might be $500, but the trade value requires $600. In fact, it is routine and expected.

It's an apples, to oranges, to cranberries kind of exchange rate.

Posted by: Tobacco Road at June 21, 2013 07:42 PM (4Mv1T)

You can shoot a 7mm Mag in a .300 Win Mag.

the .280 gets no love generally but it is a fine shooter.

343 Alton, as far as 22LR coins in your pocket... At any gun show a few months ago it would have been worth a crazy amount. You hear stories of idiots paying 50 cents a round. Today, although there is still a shortage I think the panic buyers have either spent all their money or have bought enough to squelch their panic. The people that HAD to have it a while ago now have it...everyone else has been patient for almost 7 months now, so can afford to be patient a while longer. As with anything, the item is worth what someone will pay for it. I'm reminded of that classic Twilight Zone episode of the crooks who stole a bunch of gold and then cryo-slept for a 100 years to evade the heat. Walking through the desert, one drink of water was worth a bar of gold. Well, at that time, for one guy, it was...

375 If people voted based on objective results, Democrats in elective office would be rare. When Sen Turky Neck and Rep What's-His-Face turned over the congress to Reid and Pelosi we had a booming economy with low unemployment. Since that point we've had Democrats running things and the worst economy America has seen since the Great Depression. A "2% growth" when you are spending 10% of the economy to create it is an 8% contraction, with real inflation around 10% no less.

Posted by: chemjeff at June 21, 2013 10:43 PM (cnS/d)

The Milk River and the St.Mary's River are the only rivers of any size that drain into the Missouri watershed. The Oldman, and rivers north of it ultimately drain into Hudson Bay. But the high rainfall conditions in the mountains and upper plains that precipitated this flooding episode may exist across the border in Montana, too.

I am about 80 miles northeast of Calgary, and it rained all morning, but cleared off about 4 PM, and was sunny until sunset.

450 The 30-06 is a fine round as many a downed critter would attest to. I do love my 7mm Rem mag though. Or I did before that tragic ice fishing accident.

The .30-06 is capable of doing for any North American game when loaded with  a solid / partition or similar 220gr. pill.  This is the only distinction between it and its short-action cousin, the .308.  The 7mm can do most of what the .30-06 does, but what it can do it does waaaaay faster.  You wanna see some crazy chrono data - look up the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner.  That was / is a WILD wildcat.

525 Hello, Horde.  Just checked in, so I'll be perusing four-hundred posts before I begin the usual chicanery.

Quick fact:  ...been cooking "Fajita Wings" for Wingfest tomorrow.  Don't ask for the recipe, but just think of Don Pablos and Chipotle combined.

I'm hoping to win a small, undisclosed, friendly prize.  Otherwise, it is going to be a drunken get-together with my best friends, great food and a big fire-pit.

...tomorrow is going to be awesome.  I love Summer.

If I don't post again tonight, it is because these little beauties took me six hours to create, (tired), AND I'm trying to catch up with what is going on.

God Bless All of You.

-Your Friendly Neighborhood Slapweasel

P.S.:  After a "sixer", I most certainly will not be posting again tonight.

536 So what Puff Scampi is saying is that drug dealers are entering a more licit black market, one wherein the goods are initially stolen; they then pay a very low price for them, or trade them for drugs, and finally the goods are sold in the neighborhod to those who wish to have them.  They've effectively aped the distribution model of the stores they've robbed and followed through on sales strategy.  Capitalism will never die.

Finally got that link to work for me...about the 10 Most Dangerous Cities.

1. Flint, Mich.

2. Detroit, Mich.

3. Oakland, Calif.

4. St. Louis, Mo.

5. Memphis, Tenn.

6. Stockton, Calif.

7. Birmingham, Ala.

8. New Haven, Conn.

9. Baltimore, Md.

10. Cleveland, Ohio

What's interesting, is that Flint, Mich. has the lowest population out of the 10...and highest per capita crime rate.

But Detroit was a close second with triple the murder rate.

610 You could look at that list and think "Memphis and Birmingham are outliers", and you'd be correct in that they're in red states.  The big caveat regarding each is that they've been blue forever - they don't fit their states' crime patterns, even though they resemble cities in their respective states.  They also don't fit their states' voting patterns.  Go figure.

Growth was attributed "to the introduction of the maternity capital, among other things." In a bid to encourage families to have more than one child, all women who gave birth to their second child after January 1, 2007 are eligible for a government-issued benefit of almost 409,000 rubles (about $12,600). The benefit is not paid in cash, but parents can spend the money to improve their housing conditions, pay for their children's education or put the money towards a pension.

Annoyinglittletwerp got banhammered over there for using a racial pejorative. *shrugs*. Their blog, their rules. I always liked reading her posts, myself.

Don't care for Ed Morrissey, myself, and I mean personally because he and I had an exchange last year over the transformation of Hot Air into a Rick Santorum campaign site. Santorum may personally be a great guy--and is a great guy, according to those who know him--but he's a terrible national candidate, at least in my view, and I said so. Turns out Ed was not pleased. It also turns out Ed is something of a dick. He didn't ban me, though. So there's that. I don't get too worked up over Internet stuff.

So, it finally occurred to me today that the Reagan amnesty actually is a case study in a lot of things about the proposed amnesty. Does anybody actually know what happened to the 1986 types? Saints? Shitbags? Some of each?

Is there any real data out there that is not just some slanted study made to prop up a preconceived point of view?

_______________________

One thing we know about the 1986 amnesty recipients is this:  at least 1/3 of them were liars and frauds.

How do we know that?  The government itself admitted that the 1986 amnesty application process was rife with fraud (but said it was powerless to stop it).  The government also admitted that 1/3 of the APPROVED amnesty applications were based on documents that appeared to be fraudulent.

That was 1986, long before everybody had access to a personal computer and Photoshop-type software.  Just think how much worse it will be this time, with 10 times as many amnesty applicants, an amnesty bill that is deliberately written to encourage fraud, and an Obama administration that isn't even pretending it's going to look carefully at the applications.

741 My miss USA gets kind perky when I think about the crowds at Indy, but they only get 250K peeps. At Le Mans we might get 1000K, just so ya know. The Circuit de la Sarthe, and in particular the Mulsanne corner, where hearts are broken and brakes are tested (and lives are taken), is just about as pure as it gets. A serious dose of reality, a feeding of the lions, the ultimate test of engineering. Come on Corvett's, chase down those Aston Martin's and show them that Britannia does not rule!

755 I have several interrelated stories which revolve around the historic use of the term 'Tigger' (with an N). One is the Black kid in college who got on my case for frankly telling one such tale. Later, we were fine, but I still clearly recall him telling me at first (after telling me to say the word repeatedly, and I did to his face with a smile), "It sure sounds hateful when you say it." (Bob, where are you today?) That even on Ace of Spuds one ought use asterisks or substitutes is a horror. I hate PC language Nazis. Gratuitous waiting for new thread filler comment.

Oh gawd, I remember when I waz a young pup (20's).  We meet a NATO 1000 hour test by finding a some miss logged hours. (yea right) So the company sprung for an open bar party that night (school night).  I worked 2nd shift, so we stopped by at our lunch.  Everybody was already liquored-up.  One of the "Office Assistant" MILF gave me a lip lock that checked me for cavities.  Needless to say we went back to work, only to log out, and join the party.  We drank the open-bar dry.  Damm near killed me.
