Yes, we are becoming a banana republic. Mark Steyn: American Banana Republic.

“Banana republic” is an American coinage — by O. Henry, a century ago, for a series of stories set in the fictional tropical polity of Anchuria. But a banana republic doesn’t happen overnight; it’s a sensibility, and it’s difficult to mark the precise point at which a free society decays into something less respectable. Pace Obama, ever swelling debt, contracts for cronies, a self-enriching bureaucracy, a shrinking middle class preyed on by corrupt tax collectors, and thuggish threats against anyone who disagrees with you put you pretty far down the banana-strewn path.

Benghazi Movie

HBO to make Benghazi movie. Now we all know HBO is as lefty as they come so I'm surprised they are making this movie UNLESS it is a total rewrite that differs greatly from the book and somehow overlooks Hillary's role in the whole mess. If they stick to the book, I'll be floored.

Dumbass Of The Day

This guy is a genius. Rubbing antifreeze in eyes backfires on man claiming he was maced.

Andrew D. Zeiner, 29, told investigators he was sprayed with Mace while traveling northbound on I-75 near U.S. 35. He said the person who maced him was someone he had cut off when changing lanes on the highway.

Zeiner claims his eyes started to water and sting, causing him to hit the car directly in front of him before swerving and hitting a barrier.

As police were probing Zeiner on his claims of being maced, they noticed the engine of his 1998 Honda was spraying antifreeze, which was likely what got into his eyes.

He told police that he is a mechanic and has had antifreeze in his eyes before but that it didn't burn. Against an officer's advice Zeiner then rubbed some antifreeze into his eyes in an attempt to prove his point.

Zeiner's eyes then began to burn and water.

25 HBO needs to do a Benghazi movie to explain how republicans caused everything and how awesome Hillary is.  Otherwise she is completely screwed in 2016.  Yes America, the campaign for 2016 started long ago and the democrat mouthpieces have been covering for Hillary and have already negated many career killing debacles.

Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at September 21, 2013 06:39 PM (GEICT)

88 Howdy, all.  Tonight, I begin with what I consider to be The Greatest Concept Album Of The 1960s, and nothing else comes even remotely close: http://tinyurl.com/kcsgopr

That's The Who Sell Out (1967) by, you guessed it, The Who.  If you haven't heard this album before, you life is quite simply far, far poorer for it.  It's conceptually organized as a notional radio broadcast of the sort you would have heard on British pirate (i.e. non-BBC) radio in 1966-1967 or so, complete with advertisements, jingles, and sell-out endorsements woven in and out of the songs.  Begins slightly weirdly, but by "Odorono" it takes off into what remains one of the single greatest consecutive run of songs ever put on an album by any rock artist, ever: "Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands" --> "Odorono" (this song is genius in its conception) --> "Tattoo" --> "Our Love Was" --> "I Can See For Miles."

And that's just Side 1.

On Twitter today, Ace and some of his cohorts were saying dismissive things about The Who.  I could only conclude that they were unfamiliar with this album (to be fair, other than "I Can See For Miles" it sounds very unlike the trademark "Who" sound -- this album is based on pretty melodies, three part harmonies, and clever psychedelic pop as opposed to power trio hard rock).  More's the pity for them.  Give it a shot!

I concur. If they did a realistic movie with Woods and Soherty defending the consulate and waiting for help that would never come... Hillary wouldn't stand a chance.

But probably mostly the flim-flamming. That reminds me, gotta check my lottery ticket.

133 In Florida, they call it Skunk Ape (as said above).  There's probably a population of chimps or orangutans down there from some of the circuses and wildlife refuges that escaped during various hurricanes through the years.

As for Bigfoot overall...Maybe.  I could see it possibly in Pacific Northwest, based on what dad's said about flying over at night and not seeing lights on the ground for long periods of time.  One of my great uncles says he saw the "Beaman Monster" (Central, MO bigfoot; seen usually around a little town/trading post in the woods called Beaman) once in the 1950's.  He was serious enough about it he wouldn't hunt, go on foot, or drive in that area without a slug gun and a large pistol in that area again for the rest of his life.

145 Couple title fights on tonight's UFC card. Lt Heavyweight Jones vs Gustafsson. Jones is one of the first elite athletes going into UFC now that there's more money. He has two brothers in the NFL and is just faster, stronger, and better than everyone else. Early UFC guys were selected more for craziness and ability to withstand punishment. Especially in the heavier weight classes. If you are big and strong and fast, the NFL is a much more lucrative way to make a living. Now there's some decent money and some real athletes are entering the sport. Jones is only 26, but just destroyed all the top lt heavyweights in the world. Made them look pathetic, slow, and weak. He's probably gonna destroy Gustafsson.

I'm of two minds on this. Anyone remember all the laughs we got from the "Don't tase me bro" punk? Clearly the man was disturbing the peace. (The council members were the only ones supposed to speak, answering written questions from the public). If this meeting took place in a non-public owned venue then the parent is out of luck as far as I'm concerned.

On the other hand, if this was at a townhall or some other publically funded venue, then they trampled his right to public protest and free speech.

Also, unlike "Don't tase me bro", this man did not physically resist arrest. At most, depending on the venue, he should have been ejected from the venue.

I agree for the most part on the fossil/body/etc thing. In Florida, I think there's probably just not enough population density on the escaped ape front for it to turn up. Used to live in S. Carolina, on an island in the swamp, and go out in the woods with the cousins and uncle in Missouri. It's amazing how quickly and totally things can disappear out there.

Hell, we had a coyote take down a large deer just off our deck a couple years ago. Moved the carcass back into the tree line at the edge of our property. Other than some bone shards, it was gone within a week, and I only found the shards because I knew where we dropped the carcass. This is in the suburbs just north of Cincinnati, btw (and no, it wasn't sanitation department. I checked it daily, and there were increasing signs of predation.  Sanitation wouldn't even come look at it for anything less than $600).

Once every so many years I would get a checkup. That was pretty much it. A lot of people in their twenties with decent incomes haven't bought insurance because they simply don't feel the need to pay several thousand dollars per year for insurance they probably won't use for years at a stretch. Major Medical would have been a good solution to this.

222 Yes, we are a Banana Republic to some extent. Obama has basically taken the political ethos of Illinois to D.C., and it is all about paying back your allies and using the power of the government to harass and punish your opponents. If you don't have klout, if someone important doesn't owe you a favor, you are a plebe that has to play by the rules that are often changed arbitrarily and not in your favor. Obama would be a dictator if he could, and it is a true testament to our constitution and political system that it has largely withstood his megalomaniacal ambitions to be king. The Democratic party of today is hardly democratic, and it is hardly inclusive, tolerant, and a champion for the underdog. It has become the party of entitlement, elitism, credentials, connections, lineage, and yes, klout. Let's hope that what's left of freedom after this would-be Stalin has left office will serve as an ember that can ignite again the love of freedom and true liberalism that once made this country a beacon to the world. While we have taken steps toward being a Banana Republic, there is still some hope. With the current debts levels, however, there is not a lot of time left.

Richard Kruspe, the lead guitarist of Rammstein, said that growing up his influence was "heavy metal on the one side and pop on the other. (...) I was afraid to tell my friends I was listening to Depeche Mode. I loved the band. I loved their melodies. ThatÂ’s why in Rammstein, you can hear a lot of melodies in our music. (...) Personally, the band I thought did the best at changing themselves was Depeche Mode. If you follow there [sic] career, it's excellent."

239 If there is another Moron on this ONT who is familiar with, and likes, Scott Walker, I will immediately consider that Moron a close friend.

No, I'm not talking about the governor of Wisconsin (though I love that guy too, don't get me wrong -- I voted for him in 2010 and was in Madison when shit went nuts with the Budget Repair Bill which only cemented my attachment to him).  I'm talking about this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-zgdGQB4S4

That, right there, is IMO the single greatest political protest song ever recorded.  Well, my favorite at least.  "The Old Man's Back Again," written about the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.  The "old man" he's referring to is the ghost of Stalin, of course.  Seriously people, check that shit out.  The bassline alone will render the song indelible.

Walker used to be the lead singer/main songwriter in The Walker Brothers, a UK teen-pop '60s group who had one major American hit, but at least it was an epic, all-time-great one: "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q11ium_-Lv8

But that song is from Walker's pop adolescence.  Once he went solo in 1967, he started writing about existential ennui, Jacques Brel pastiches, lonely transvestites, and oh yeah, the Indiana Jones and the Raiders Of The Lost Ark theme 11 years before John Williams stole it from him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_ktTtAZfV4

305 I grew up outside and have spent many many days and nights in the woods and swamps from the Adirondacks to the Everglades. Spooked the shit out of me, and I don't spook. I called the guy I worked with (bear hunter, and a sf Vietnam vet) to come out there and look, he agreed it was fd up stuff. Not saying I have seen the skunk ape, just that something I was SURE of before that point, I am no longer so sure of.

325 306 Most fucked up thing I've run into in the woods, other than the huge dog packs that used to run out there, was once when I was out with my cousins and we were running around in the woods in the Ozarks.  We started smelling what that smelled like a combo of the ape house at the zoo and one time when I went home for a long weekend from college and my roommate had a 2-3 day near-non-stop masturbation session and didn't vent or clean the room.  Had what sounded like a single large animal following us through the bramble 100 or so yards away from us, behind us (upwind from us) for about an hour, the stank there the whole time.  We lost it by going into an unoccupied pasture and hitting up the service road to the neighbor's barn.  It sounded like it stopped a few yards short of the tree line.

My uncle looked at us like we were insane when we told him and said that didn't fit with any animals out there (he's been an avid hunter all his life and lived there all his life).  They run into that stank from time to time and always bug out in case it's a bear or something, because it's always in thick brush and they can never get an exact fix on it.  None of us has ever seen what's made it.

358 337 No, not like the Bigfoot tracks that you see that people make. These tracks looked kinda like a bear is foot (there were no front feet to go along with them) but the toes were too long and had claw marks. Big claws like a grizzly would have, much bigger than a black bears short claws. The toes were the thing. All wrong for anything in the south east woods. The place that they were would have been a terrible place for a prank, it was out through a swamp where no one would likely find them.

374 I've heard of Severn Lodge and it's in the Muskoka "cottage country" area but I've never been there personally.

In the early '70s our family got an indoor pool instead of buying a cottage; and a neighbour's cottage we used occasionally was in the NE of Toronto area of Haliburton and not to the NW in Muskoka; also our family's from Northern Ontario so we went up north for summer camping and not just north of Toronto.

386 @359 I know nothing about tracks in reality. But I saw something about how they can change over time. Sort of like natural decomposition causing weird effects on dead animals which people mistake for chupacabra attacks or alien sampling. People release exotic pets all the time as well. I worked at a tiger rescue for a while. Nothing stopping someone from releasing a bear or tiger where it does not belong. Some good photos exist of what looks like a black panther in England. If it is, no doubt once a horrible pet. Get a lab or shepherd people.

390 371 Country Singer I keep getting the "Coddington vanVoorhees VI" feeling ... OTOH, Teh JEF has had everything handed to him, done for him, arranged for him ... fixed/covered-up for him ... does he have any emotional strength? The only successes are the 2 elections. The consistent and constant sequence of failures over the last 5 years simply can't be hidden or ignored forever; for someone who said he could do everyone else's job better than they could, when in fact he's utterly incompetent (remember: he essentially handed the Presidency back to Slick Willie for an evening) ... ... and then Putin publicly gives him noogies ... and lets The Chinless Syrian laugh at him ... Teh JEF loses. 100%. No victory lap. Major loss of face style. This has to be an intellectual and personal existential crisis. There have been 1 or 2 reports about some sort of hypnosis/cult/Scientology-like society surrounding Teh JEF; reputedly one of Di Fi's aides witnessed a few seconds of it, and he's dead, due to mysterious causes and circumstances. 72-Hour Rule ... with periodic continuations. I think something will break soon.

Thing is, I don't believe this halfwit is anything more than a puppet of more serious figures behind the scenes. I actually do believe that there's a good chance that his "minder" is Valerie Jarrett.

But, here's the thing.....wouldn't a lot of the "conspiracy theater" crap chap the ass of TFG, his minder, or the people behind the scenes -- regardless of who they really are? I mean, if you were a criminal gang that owned a politician and had people continually going, "he's owned by shadowy figures from *NOT YOU*" -- isn't it going to annoy you a bit that you look like *NOT YOU*'s lackey? And if, by random chance, people say "Obama is owned -- lock, stock, and barrel -- by the Muslim Brotherhood" and the people behind him actually ARE the MB, wouldn't that seriously increase their paranoia?

So, to a certain extent, I'm willing to entertain a certain amount of wild conspiracy theories -- but not seriously commit to 'em -- in order to flush out the conspiracists that lie behind things that seem obvious to me -- TFG constantly acts like a spoiled three-year-old and doesn't seem that bright, some political machine has advanced him beyond his capabilities, and that machine hasn't exactly bragged about its role.

To put this another way, let's say the MSM sticks a mic in my face and says, "what do you think of rumors that TFG sucks dick?"....and I say, "gee, that's news to me -- but since you are sooooooo credible, I guess I should tell everyone I know that the MSM thinks TFG is a peter-puffer."

If someone tries to troll something that actually has a downside, maybe packaging the troll and the downside together might really help the cause.

Found it.  It was his speech today to the CBC Foundation's  yearly gala dinner.

"He told the audience of minority leaders that the Republican party, particularly in the House of Representatives, had been taken over by an “extreme faction” and that he would “not negotiate” over the Affordable Care Act."

His raised  voice, his cadence - all about as  bad as you could imagine.  I really detest this man.

478 A big chunk of my day went to inventorying comics. I discovered two longboxes, as they're known in the trade, in my storage and hope to get some cash out of them. There was nothing the local shop wanted but suspect most of their customers weren't even born when these items were published. Like a complete set of the first Mage series, and of the second series. Far as I can tell, Wagner hasn't gotten the third series out yet.

I don't want to plunk down $20 for a copy of the current Overstreet price reference, and I haven't found any torrent for it. So I'm loading the inventory on my phone and hope to take surreptitious notes at the local Barnes and Noble tomorrow.

Because I'm leaving town for most of a week next Thursday, my goal of having the storage emptied and the billing stopped this month appears to be lost. Which makes me regret selling cheap on some of the stuff I was in a rush to move in pursuit of the goal.

One item I'm not going to rush on is the Watchmen Cover Portfolios. I have two of these, one still sealed after 25 years and the other missing one item I had framed for a birthday gift. These commonly go for over $100, so I figure the two as a set should get me at least $150.

Wouldn't it be simpler to put in a septic tank if a local sewage connection isn't available?

510 I went to bed early and set my alarm for 4:30 so I could get up and watch Cygnus approach and berth to the ISS. I actually managed to get up and not sleep through my alarm, as I have been known to do. Then I found out that the rendezvous had been aborted because of a software problem. Next attempt Tuesday. *grumble*

516 Went to Mrs VIA's High School reunion last night.
73 minutes total time there.
The guy in the suit drinking out of a bottle in a paper bag finished it off for us.

And that school meeting with the guy getting arrested?
Right here in our little town.
And the local blogs are tearing him up for breaking the rules and deserving to get arrested.
You know, like all the college students protesting downtown last year.
