Overnight Open Thread (23 Aug 2013)
— CDR M

This is just so friggin' stupid. Germany to add third gender option to birth certificates. The third gender is "blank" so their precious little child can pick it later. Why stop with leaving the sex of your baby blank? How about leaving race blank, especially if you are bi-racial? Hell, don't even give them a name. Let them pick that too. More people wish they could've picked their names than wish they could've been the opposite sex. Crime Pop Quiz

Damn. I got none of them correct. Match the arrestee with their alleged crime.

How Pacific Rim Should Have Ended

Military Themed Brewery

I'm gonna have to give this beer a try. Iraq war veterans open military-themed brewery. I wish them well. Hope it tastes good! Here is their website, Young Veterans Brewing Company.

German Mayor Campaign

Now see, I could get used to having political ads like this. Or at least the part that occurs 2 minutes and 10 seconds into the video. German Mayor ditches election posters for music video.

A-10 Warthog

Bad Teachers

You'd think with school out for summer, teacher sex scandals would die down. You'd be wrong. This summer's hottest teachers who got busy with students.

USMC Secret Weapon

Dang. The secret is out. The Marine's secret weapon is coffee. Interesting read about the history of coffee and the U.S. military.

Sprites

Pretty sweet photos of sprites, aka "red lightning". Scientists capture rare photographs of red lightning.

Shit For Brains Medicine

Oh good Lord. Doctors who implanted fecal bacteria in patients' brains fined by California health authorities.

A follow up to this morning's news that DC Comics is moving The Justice League of America north and renaming them The Justice League of Canada, in a typical Dan DiDio stunt.

An update says Adam Strange, the beloved Zeta Ray riding lonely heart, is being revamped into a Canadian, and will probably end up being into she-males or something.

Also, now Lobo The Main Man is apparently going to be drawn as a cross between The Crow and one of the sparkle vampires from Twilight.

Since when did college students drink top-shelf liquor? Jeebus, I could buy three bottles (1.75 liter bottles, thankyouverymuch) of Val-U-Rite (and a tin of Copenhagen) for what they were payin' for a fifth of hoity-toity booze.

Note: the spell-checker does not like "hoity-toity". I'm goin' with it, anyway. That's just how I roll. Posted by: ChelseaJackson and Working Families feat. The Middle Class at August 23, 2013 10:23 PM (JMmQ9)

When Boy BFF was in college, he whined at me enough to get me to come down for a weekend.   At that time, he was 22 and I was nearly 30.  I showed up and tossed him my keys with "Presents for you in the trunk."   He went out and started hauling in the boxes of college appropriate booze.   Then I sent him back out to get my bag and the tiny little box in the back seat that contained my alcohol for the weekend.   When one of his housemates whined about why was it they got the cheap stuff,  I replied "I'm old and I have a job.   I don't have to drink that shit."

That was the same weekend that another of his housemates picked up the water glass next to me and took a gulp.   That's when he found out that wasn't water.

186 Just found this little insightful gem from George Carlin: George Carlin's wife died early in 2008 and George followed her, dying in July 2008. It is ironic George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent and so very appropriate. An observation by George Carlin: The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete. Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind. And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away. George Carlin

No way can I wrap my mind around these sub-humans. Baby shot between the eyes, three black teens beat a white teen nearly to death on a school bus, three black (or whatever) thugs gun down a white young man on the street.

Just the one guy who was Mr. Oh So Charming and who thought that he was doing me a favor by flirting with me so of course I would share my Jameson's with him.   He was wrong.

Heh.  It was actually something like three or four boxes of booze.   Boy BFF was banging this really really hot but super annoying chick who made the mistake of whinging at me that omg he drank too much.   I tried to explain to her that I had been married to a problem drinker well on his way to being an alcoholic and I could assure her that no, no, he didn't.   He called me up a couple hours before I came down in a rage because they'd had a fight and she poured all his booze down the drain and they were having a party that night.   I told him not to worry about it and dropped something like $200 to replenish his stock.

I grew up in a neighborhood that was 50% black, 25% white, and 25% hispanic. Seeing as how I was as white looking as obama is, I was on the receiving end of much racism from blacks. I even witnessed them teaching their kids that bad things that happened to them was because they are black. It is no surprise that we are seeing young impressionable black males attacking whites strictly for issues of race.

268 233 It is no surprise that we are seeing young impressionable black males attacking whites strictly for issues of race.

No doubt. But I don't want to fall into the trap of the Left, and think that these murders were especially bad because whites were the victims. 303 So, *that* was one fucked up movie. . .

I just saw "Antiviral" on Redbox. It's by Cronenberg's son but it's paced and envisoned more like Kubrick's son did it. The horror isn't so much in the crumbling of reality; it's more in the inhumane nature of humanity.

Basically our cult of celebrity has gotten so bad in this future, that people are actually cloning and eating supermodels' protein. Oh yeah, and there's a brisk trade in the diseases they get too.

I spent about the last third of the movie literally hiding behind my chair.

----
"What can be made of this unbroken series of decisions and acts contributing to the strategy of defeat? They cannot be attributed to incompetence. If Marshall  Obama were merely stupid, the laws of probability would dictate that part of his decisions would serve this country's interest. If Marshall  Obama is innocent of guilty intention, how could he be trusted to guide the defense of this country further? We have declined so precipitously in relation to the Soviet Union in the last 6 years. How much swifter may be our fall into disaster with Marshall Obama at the helm? Where Will all this stop? That is not a rhetorical question: Ours is not a rhetorical danger. Where next will Marshall  Obama carry us?

452 "The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), in an article republished by the left-liberal Salon magazine, has issued another of its breathless alarms about “radical Traditionalist Catholics.” This one concerns an upcoming Fatima conference in Niagara Falls (September 8-13) featuring some 27 speakers, including Congressman Ron Paul, which will address, among other topics, the growing tyranny of the modern nation-state and the urgency of the Fatima message for both civic and Church leaders who are seeking peace and social order. The screaming headline declares: “Ron Paul to be keynote speaker at anti-Semitic conference.” According to SPLC, the anti-Semitism is attributable to Ron Paul himself —an allegation based on old newsletters with which Paul was loosely associated many years ago whose content SPLC deems politically incorrect. One “radical traditionalist” theme of the conference, quoted by the article, is “a return to sanity in the government of the world and the Church, for the two cannot be separated.” “Another day, another amusingly hysterical bulletin from SPLC,” said Christopher A. Ferrara, one of the conference speakers. “Ron Paul is not even Catholic, but rather is speaking on secular themes related to the current political and economic crisis. Not every speaker at this conference is my cup of tea, but that is the whole point of the conference: to bring together people from Church and State, from all over the world, to discuss from different perspectives the moral, spiritual, political and economic crises threatening Western civilization.” “This story is a perfect example of why SPLC has zero credibility, and why a condemnation by that far-Left group of loons has become a badge of honor among the growing number of decent people and groups SPLC has smeared,” Ferrara concluded." ------Fatima Perspectives website

455 Someone leaked the script of Law and Oder; JTS and here's how the Trayvon story goes ....

Eighth grade honor student Trayvon Martin is walking home from church, eager to do his homework.
Aryan Nation member George Zimmerman is driving around in his pickup truck with Confederate flag license plate and decals.
Zimmerman spots Martin in the dark by the light glowing from the little boyÂ’s halo.
The Klansman takes chase, hunting Trayvon down like a dog.
The budding football star nearly outruns the racist, but he stops when he comes to a “Do Not Enter” sign.
Unwilling to disobey a lawful sign, he turns to face his attacker.
The child attempts to reason with his attacker, but the illiterate power-mad cop-wannabe is not inclined to listen to reason, or pleas for compassion.
Despite numerous specific orders from police officers to not leave his vehicle, Zimmerman exits his truck and says, “Any last words, ****?”
“Praise Jesus. God bless you, Sir,” replies the helpless youngster.
Zimmerman drags the future Nobel Peace Prize winner on top of him.
A witness sees the youngster repeatedly swinging his arms, apparently attempting to make the sign of the cross.
“White-Hispanic Power!” screams Zimmerman, as he empties the high-capacity clip loaded with armor-piercing hollow-point bullets from his semi-automatic assault pistol.
Zimmerman then fiendishly punches himself in the face, breaking his nose, and repeatedly bangs his head on the sidewalk while screaming “Help me! Help me!” which obviously is a secret racist code for “Heil Hitler.”
When he is finished murdering Martin, Zimmerman gets back into his gas-guzzling, globe-warming pickup truck and makes his escape.
The last thing poor Trayvon sees before he dies is the “Bush-Cheney 2004” bumper sticker.

541 Ashley: interestingly, it's the opposite here in my neck of the woods where we hae both Ralphs (a relatively recently purchase of Kroger, which is a union shop) and Stater Bros. (which is non-union).

I've always found nearby Ralphs stores to be reasonably clean, the employees somewhat helpful (or at least not surly), and the stores also smell decent. The Stater Bros., on the other hand... well, I've never been in one where I could find an employee to ask for help, and that didn't smell like rotting meat for some reason. Weird.

Not to defend unions necessarily, but sometimes communities get lucky.

Posted by: qdpsteve at August 24, 2013 01:20 AM (7B7jB) It's kind of sad that the cashiers at the Kroger we go to have been there since I moved to town, and that was 24 years ago. The managers at this store seem to be even worse as I've seen them watch smaller older women climb up shelves to get items off the top shelf instead of actually helping the shopper get the item. It may just be how unions act in right to work states by seeing just how little they can do and get away with.

My fairly sparse dealings with working with Union folks. The doing the least they can do and making a stink if you do their "job" (that they do slowly). Is what reinforces my belief my non union job is better. I have more control to do the things I think will get what I'm paid to do for. And I don't have to sit on my ass bored waiting for a union guy to move my desk so I can plug something into my computer.

We ended up shortchanging dinner in order to (a) get a cable-car ride in, and (b) get back to where we'd left the car (San Bruno) before BART slowboated and/or died for the night.

In addition, when we were out in the triad, there were (oddly) a few Japanese restaurants compared to virtually no Chinese restaurants -- which would have made it perhaps more difficult than it had to be if we'd gone into Dim Sum/Hunan/Szechuan/Cantonese, etc. But we did a nice stroll through Chinatown.

579 I really have to question the appropriateness of a headline saying, ""Hottest Teachers and how they got busy with their students" and a picture of a woman in the pink dress. No, they didn't get BUSY with their students. They had sex with a MINORS committed to their care. In most of America if you're caught that would be considered a felony, I believe. It is a crime. It's statutory rape. This whole "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" perpetuates the idea that it's somehow o.k. if the teacher was hot and sort of dismisses the sexualization of children. People compound this by saying "They never had teachers like this when I was a kid" as if-again-because the teacher was sexy. No, it is NOT o.k. It is never o.k. for a teacher to have sex with a current student . It is never o.k. for teachers to have sex with minors. I am disappointed in "The Daily Caller"

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 24, 2013 01:57 AM (gTN+E)

580 meant "it's o,k, if the teacher was hot." Did they have women teachers who were young when we were students? Probably, but they were less likely to have sex with students because the whole freaking culture wasn't oversexualized, the women weren't on power trips to prove how much they could control boys by having sex with their students, magazines weren't printing garbage which said "Hottest teachers who got busy with their students." as if it were sort of the education version of the hottest swimsuit issue.

I truly don't get the "logic" of "other genders", even fron a leftist perspective. Even from a radical leftist/feminist perspective.

If gender is a social construct, then why would being "gender non conforming" make you a different sex? Wouldn't it just mean that you're, say, a man who likes traditionally female clothes, or a butch woman? How can you claim that gender is socially constructed, and then claim that certain behaviours, clothes etc., are entirely male/female?

And it flies in the face of a lot of these peoples' objections to cosmetic surgery. Why is is bad, no good, not at all nice for women to get breast implants, but these men getting implants to feel better about themselves, like, totally fine? Surgery to make women tighter = awful. Surgery to make them "male" = awesome. Isn't mutilation mutilation?

Finally, as Julie Burchill has asked, what's the difference between black and white minstrels, and the drag queens and trannies? It's the same exaggerated caricature.

582 My Dad was first officer on a ship in the Pacific Theater during WW II. He was for the most part quite tight-lipped about his wartime experiences, but one story he did tell involved coffee.

He said that up on the bridge it often got quite cold and wet, and they relied heavily upon coffee to keep warm and alert. He said it was the foulest coffee imaginable, but that they actually wanted it that way. They never cleaned out the coffeepot, so over time the coffee became thicker, more oily, and more effective for their purposes.

Then one day a new ensign, eager to please, took it upon himself to clean out the coffeepot. Dad said they very nearly threw the ensign over the side!

The way I look at it, it's sort of like any other exalted state....take, for instance, being a heavyweight boxer. You can box; you can want to "be like" a certain winning boxer......but until you can actually box and win, you're not in the running -- and until you can actually box and win in the same league as your target, you're not convincing.....and, unless you can pull-off a win against the calibre of your target, you can't step into his shoes.

So, WRT transgender -- you can like the same sex; you want to "be like" a member of the opposite sex.....but until you can actually pass yourself off as one, you're not in the running. Well -- hormones and surgery can get you that.

The next hurdle is whether you can compete in the same league as women born to their status.....and, well, you lose a few along the way.

And, so far as I know, there has been no case where any "epitome of femaleness" has been transgender. If Kate Upton owns up to his lurid past, maybe we'll have gotten there.
