So what is the difference between a prepper and a survivalist? I think I can agree with this definition. Bottom line, every one of us should be at least a prepper. I know I wouldn't want to have to rely on outside help in case of a disaster, terror attack, etc.

So if it makes good practical sense to be prepared for contingencies, why all the Demonizing Of Preppers? PSA

As if you needed another reason why not to cheat on your wife, this one just might make you think twice. Have An Affair, Break Your Penis.

In what can only be described as the most painful example of karma on medical record, a new study in Sexual Medicine found that men who have extramarital affairs are more likely to break their penises.

Doctors at the University of Maryland found that half of their penile fracture patients between 2007 and 2011 sustained penis injuries when they were having affairs.

Somewhat related. Men Are Better Navigators Than Women.

Researchers from the University of Illinois looked closely at 35 studies on territorial ranges and spatial abilities in humans and a number of animals, including cuttlefish, deer mice, horses, laboratory mice, meadow voles, pine voles, prairie voles, rats, rhesus macaques and talas tuco-tucos (a type of burrowing rodent). In eight out of eleven species, the researchers found, males demonstrated moderately superior spatial skills than females.

This tendency applied regardless of territory size or the extent to which male ranges spanned farther than female ranges. This means that, even though females roamed just as much as males, they werenÂ’t quite as good at it.

Japan Fashion

Well, at least it's not Florida. Latest Japanese Fashion Trend: Girls Wearing Panties On Their Heads.

Hollywood and Science

No surprise as Hollywood is scientifically incorrect in a movie. This time, it was A Good Day To Die Hard.

Our heroic team heads to Chernobyl, and one of the characters whips out a device that reminded me of the proton pack from the movie Ghostbusters. The character used it to "neutralize" the radiation.

Ummm, no.

Radioactivity cannot be neutralized.

TV Show

Forget Girls, I just might have to check out Magic City on Starz based on the award they just won For Excellence In TV Nudity.

Ok, ok, I keed. I probably won't watch that show. But I can't wait for Season 3 of Game Of Thrones. Brand spanking new trailer below. Thar be dragons!

I just might have to give these chips a try. New Maple Bacon Flavor Kettle Potato Chips.

Makes sense.  Afterall, for procreation the males of the species are the ones that have to hit the target.

7 Tastes Like… Energy Independence! Recently, Democratic Governor of Colorado John Hickenlooper has laudably been fighting against excess and crippling regulation of “fracking” (AKA Hydrolic Fracturing) used to tap America’s fast hydrocarbon wealth. He stood up against the many conspiracy theorists who insisted that “fracking fluid” is pure poison that plutocrats sell in order to buy another ivory backscratcher. Despite conspiracy theories to the contrary, the fracking fluid included chemicals obtained from the food industry, and was quite safe to drink… though New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg would probably insist on banning anything over 16 oz. 9 The Anti-Public Servants ”Public servants” are supposed by be employees of “We the People” and serve the needs of their community. Of course, this is bus a hypothetical… and not a very accurate one far too often. Mocking the public they allegedly serve, pushing politically correct nonsense, and even outright persecuting those they desire to serve has likely been going on for a long time. But in this day and age, where video can be readily recorded and disseminated across the internet, the petulance of some of these so-called civil servants can be put on display. 31 Necroing this up from the afternoon open to get comments and advice So. My PAC is official. We have recognition from the state elections finance bureaucracy and from the IRS. Now I need to work on the letterhead so I can send out introductory emails and letters to the money people. Anybody a graphic designer who wants to send me a rough? I have little artistic talent and a couple of ideas, but I'm sure there's other good ideas out there for a logo. Anybody have an opinion on going with two separate logos? I wanna do one for web and email and a different one for mail and for the office when we get an office. We're shooting for funding candidates in the 2014 cycle. There will be progress but it will appear slow. The reason i want to do two logos is kind of a micro targeting thing. I want to reach the old people and monied party people with one classy logo, and reach younger people, libertarians, a d conservative activists with a more energetic logo that makes a hard break with the stuffy old losers in the state GOP. I'm thinking of a silhouette of a Minuteman with the name unfurling off his musket, and the tag line "the heartland of the Massachusetts Republican Party" for the black and white logo, and something bordering on pure iconography for the younger one. The first letter of each word will be white, inside a red or orange square. The rest of the letters will be black on white. I want to use a sans-serif Bauhaus font because for 80 years it's been "futuristic" and people kind of get that intuitively. Additionally, the first letters of the four words can then be separated and made into a larger red-and-orange square that I think will look really nice on the web.

I've been trying to stay up for an ONT about a week now -- since I last heard from Miss Tammy. She loves y'all, miss y'all and checks in to read, but she's too tired to post.

Sme weeks ago, she was diagnosed with pneumonia, so severe that the docs advised Thor to get to her ASAP!  So she starts to feel better with the pneumonia, drives to Cali to be with Thor for a surgery he's got going and feels pretty well on the drive.  Within a day or two, she feels awful and is diagnosed with bronchitis on top of the pneumonia.  Then she gets in a (minor) car accident where the air bags bruised up her chest but, ironically, seemed to dislodge the gunk in her lungs that wasn't budging until then!  So now you know.  Miss Tammy is still at large and reading Ace, just too tired to comment!

Can't now or can't with current technology?

Handling alpha or beta radiation isn't that hard. A device to ionize an area around the person to be protected? Of course you'd need something layered to handle both types.

Gamma radiation would be much harder, but SF is full of "shields" that absorb EM radiation.

86 You don't need to tell me about propaganda. The reason we'd go for the heartland of the mass GOP is because about half of our state legislators are from districts overlapping Bristol county. The other slogan is BE the Republican Party. There are so many conservatives and libertarians in MA who are disillusioned with the GOP brand and the state party. Part of the organizing we are doing is getting people who hate the current GOP to change their registration to R, join and take over the town committees, and then the state committee. So it's important to us to keep referencing the GOP because they are the target. But the heartland of liberty is pretty good too. I'll bring that to the guys.

98 "Ummm, no," huh? Well, that clinches it! It does go on to say "Not only is it toxic, but some radioactive isotopes last a really long time, and there isn't anything we can do about it except wait until they decay." But is it set in stone that there isn't anything we can do about it -- or is it just that we don't currently have the capability, and someone in the future (or a private or government concern in the recent past) could conceivably solve that?

104 Repost from last thread---did anyone else attend a rally today?  Where does *your* sheriff/police dept stand on 2A?

2/23 Day of Resistance:

Rally in my town had several hundred turnout. A few dozen had their ARs, countless others were carrying smaller items. Found out our county sheriff is an oathkeeper.

There was a table of literature, to which I added a pile of JPFO's 'genocide chart'.

One of the speakers mentioned the VA letter Ace has in the sidebar.

I wasn't aware that prepping was uncool. Back when I was attending grad school down in Mississippi, at orientation the professors told us that it was a really good idea to put some bottled water and canned food aside, just in case a hurricane came through. That was only four or so years after Katrina.

Now they are probably even more in favor of prepping - the town and campus just got trashed by a tornado a few weeks ago.

142 Re: Japanese fashion: From J-List.com: 'You may have seen posts on various websites over the weekend about the "latest trend in Japan," girls wearing panties on their faces. "Wearing Women's Panties On Your Face Is All The Rage In Japan," reports Buzzfeed with a straight face, while MSN tells us that "Japanese women have taken to putting panties on their heads, obscuring their faces." While we're big fans of pantsu and sell many interesting types from Japan, the fact is that this Japanese "trend" is just a clever marketing ploy by the publishers of the admittedly awesome Kaopan photobook to promote an upcoming tongue-in-cheek superhero film, and no one is actually doing this, unless it's professional models being photographed. This is not unlike the time a street art performer created a costume that looked like a Coca-Cola vending machine, then walked around crowded areas of Tokyo to see what the reaction would be. A New York Times reporter misunderstood this and concluded that "fearing crime," Tokyo-ites had taken to disguising themselves as vending machines in order to feel safe in public. (And no, it wasn't an article published on April 1st.)' So, once again, the media got the story wrong.

As in, "You are sinful and worthy only of damnation, and your only hope in this life and the next to throw yourself on the God. For God, being the very definition of righteousness in Himself, cannot deny His nature by failing to punish your sin, but being also merciful has taken His righteous upon himself. Therefore, repent of your evil ways - your uncleanliness and homosexuality, your envy of your neighbor's success, your desire for power - and accept Jesus as the only path to salvation, and you will be saved."

186 Another great photo from the site where "The Finger" is at: Lot of great pics on that site. In 1972, Charlie Duke left a picture of himself, his wife, and his two sons on the surface of the moon. He snapped a picture or two of it...and it's still up there. It will be completely bleached out by now, but still laying where he dropped it. I can't for the life of me think of anything a future 'retronaut' site will post of this time. Or would want to post. A pic of Brit with her shaved head? Kim K's 'baby bump'? Still's from OJ's slow speed LA chase? This country has gone down hill so fast, in so short a time, it's frankly scary...and I don't think we've hit bottom yet.

Well, radioactive decay is something that happens at the quantum level within the nucleus of a susceptible atom, so I don't see how you could suppress it. Now, you could take radioactive material, and bombard it with more intense radiation from a reactor, and thereby "hurry it along" the track to a stable isotope.

229 so just skip Taiwan and just go straight to japan?

Posted by: willow-ette

Rules for understanding China:
1. Don't believe what you read on the internet.
2. No Chinese official, military or otherwise, speak the unvarnished truth.
3. Screwing the other party in all negotiations is the primary goal.

No point in military conquest of Taiwan. The interconnection with Taiwanese business and mainland China is very tight. Why invade when you can co-opt the businesses and pols?

Punching Japan in the nose might seem appealing to the Chinese but Japan isn't stupid enough to provoke a fight that would generate turbo-charged nationalism and a regional war. Chinese with a clear view of their economic situation are not happy with the idea of instability for the sake of settling historical accounts.

Just my 2 yuan. YMMV. Caveat Emptor. Etc.

Just to be a dick, he rounded up a half dozen of our ex field employees and got them to file a claim for unpaid wages.) We met with attorneys all the damn time. Work was pretty damn busy at the time. Know what we did? Made it work. Meet with the attorneys during business hours and then find a way to make the work stuff happen. Never, ever did it occur to us to push meetings to late afternoons or weekends.

I still think we'll see a Chinese shift in focus to Central Asia in the next few years.  It's a lot easier to project power into Afghanistan/Khazakstan/etc than it is to try and establish naval hegemony in the western Pacific.  There are plenty of resources to feed the Chinese economy.  Finally, it would be harder for the US to stage any meaningful intervention.

Please note that we said CALL, not email. We want millions of voices to ring through the congressional switchboard, so please note that you might have to try several times to get through. Specifically, we are asking you to call: 1. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell at 202-224-2541 2. House Speaker John Boehner at 202-225-0600 3. Senator Richard Burr at 202-224-3154 4. To identify your US House representative, go to: http://www.house.gov/represent... and then enter your zip code in the upper right corner of the page. DELIVER THIS MESSAGE Give congressional staff 3 simple talking points: 1. Nothing about the federal proposals is acceptable – not banning semi-automatic firearms and magazines, not expanding the list of people prohibited from owning guns, and not registering private gun sales via the National Instant Check System; 2. Because “compromise” means losing freedom, you will not “compromise” on this issue, including any “lite” version of registering private sales through the National Instant Check System; and 3. As a member of one of the organizations comprising the National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban, you will support coordinated Coalition action against any legislator who supports gun control.

Here's the problem: our supply lines run through Pakistan, which has been busy forging ties with the Chinese government for years.  The Pakistanis see them as protection against India, but it also means that if the Chinese want, we could very quickly see our supply line from Karachi to the Khyber Pass cut copmletely.

Wise Food is a good place for long term storage food.

http://wisefoodstorage.com/

Prepping is easy. Load up on ammo, baby formula, diapers, toilet paper, food, tampons, water, and booze. All will be the new currency. Tampons and toilet paper will get you almost anything you want from women, and the formula and diapers from parents. The booze can be used for medicinal purposes and for what it was intended for. Make sure you stock up on cheap rum and vodka since they are the most versatile of the boozes, and will be the booze of choice for alcoholics. You may want to also get some top shelf booze for trading. When the shit hits the fan, I have some Glenlivet that I have stored that I'm hoping to trade to my sister's next door neighbor for his daughter who is a cheerleader in college. He really likes his scotch, and she is pretty damn hot.

Yes, no question about that. But (for the sake of armchair strategy) if the Pakis pick up the PRC as a patron, the US just goes back to the default threat of funding New Dehli without end.

Yes, I know. India hates the idea of collaborating with the US. Always has and always will. But I have a feeling that Mumbai 2008 shifted the Indian government's receptiveness.

Check the state police website for an information number. Just say that there's a situation coming up where you'd like to know what the law is. They'll probably tell you to hire a lawyer, who knows. Interstate transfers are Federal law and has nothing to do with what state you're in.

I always figured it'd be a hoot to put 100 muslims on a boat, and sail directly to the Anipodes of Mecca, and just anchor there, and wait for schisms to develop over which way they should flop and pray.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 23, 2013 07:58 PM (29+x5)

383 I still think we'll see a Chinese shift in focus to Central Asia in the next few years. It's a lot easier to project power into Afghanistan/Khazakstan/etc than it is to try and establish naval hegemony in the western Pacific. There are plenty of resources to feed the Chinese economy. Finally, it would be harder for the US to stage any meaningful intervention. This is a tough call. On one hand, there's lots of natural resources from about 98deg East longitude to the Caspian. On the other hand, the Muslim population starts increasing, both in actual numbers, and historically. Chinese influence has been felt in what is now the 'Stans for perhaps 1500 years, but the Battle of Talas River in 751 AD effectively drew the line of the Chinese border roughly where it is today. Further, crossing Sinkaing is a long journey, the recent railroad built by China into Tibet us in the wrong side of the mountains, and settling people there is pointless; the amount of water needed to farm is titanic, and the closest source is China? Lake Baikal? This means that force projection through the area is risky; 1 road, few friendlies, little food, less water, many opportunities for guerrillas ... While India might show some concern over Chinese expansion westward, this expansion would be on the other side of the world's highest and widest mountain range, and Ashoka was long ago. But the Russians would be in a real panic, and the Iranians would likely lose colon and bladder control, and summon believers from all over (and likely get them, and lots of Saudi money) China lacks the force projection capabilities of the US, and is unlikely to have them before 2050. 2050 isn't very far in the future, but there are a few problems China faces before then, which might screw up their plans for another 50 years. I think China will stick with "influence" for the foreseeable future.

But the joke relies on the fact that almost all people never do these things under normal circumstances. It's like how when people were complaining about gas prices, and people criticized those mocking Obama for saying people should check the air in their tires, the Libs countered by saying it was generally good advice. Well...yes. But that missed the point of the mockery.

402 China's problem is that they are surrounded by lots of people that want to take a pound of flesh from them. If they go all in towards Afghan/Paki, Ivan may decide this is the time to shore up that stretch of the border. The Muslims to the southwest are causing them some headaches, so they have to keep some "security" there. Tibet is still a headache, along with Vietnam. Not even gonna talk about the Korean penninsula. Plus, any India is now a major player, and while not wanting to be seen as being cozy with the US, finds its interests more aligned with the west's.

Long story short, China is surrounded by enemies while we have mostly "friendly" countries on our borders. Thus we are able to engage more in force projection than they are.

There's no doubt that it would be hard, but it's a lot easier to march a couple hundred thousand men across the mountains and desert than it is to march them along the bottom of the ocean, which is pretty much China's only way of moving them against Taiwan or any other islands.

I agree that they will look to build influence above all else.  However, if there is to be Chinese expansion, Central Asia is a better choice than the Pacific.

411 Colorado Alex: not arguing but just FYI, John Nolte (editor-in-Chief of Big Hollywood) LOVES House of Cards. Among other reasons, according to him, everyone in the show is a major-league scumbag... and a Democrat.

He also loves Netflix's Lilyhammer, which is produced by the Norwegian government for American export... but, miracle of miracles, and according to Nolte, actually espouses an anti-big-government vibe.

417 Anybody a graphic designer who wants to send me a rough? I have little artistic talent and a couple of ideas, but I'm sure there's other good ideas out there for a logo. Posted by: Truman, schmuman at February 23, 2013 10:14 PM (I2LwF) Truman, if you've already spec'd out the exact font and design motif you're after, you probably don't need a graphic designer or even advice from a graphic designer. I did lots of logos early in my career and they were my bread-and-butter for awhile. My advice? If you choose to engage a professional, give them the general concept--hand-draw it on a napkin or its electronic equivalent--and allow them to make the specific design and font choices. Otherwise, I'd suggest doing it yourself. In my experience, the more specific a client's design demands, the less satisfied he or she would be with anything I came up with throughout the process, and impose a genuinely crappy design because it was so fully realized in their imaginations. Besides, with modern graphics software and clip art libraries, most people can make a serviceable logo for most purposes. Nowadays, I only take on logo projects from clients who have seen my portfolio and are willing to give me a free hand (with their final approval, of course), but I've been doing design for awhile. Somebody starting out and trying to build a portfolio would probably jump on it. As an aside, never ask a designer for free work. I learned early on that nobody ever appreciates work done for free. Ever.

418 A Chinese move into Tibet ... it's been done, and it seems to be not what the Chinese were hoping for: no place to dump resettle50 million (or more) people. It seems the "land area" indicated by the POLITICAL map boundaries is actually mostly snow- and ice-covered mountain; Tibet has been carrying its maximum population load for perhaps 1000 years. A Chinese move into Siberia: Siberia is COLD, China has no historical claim to it (a Chinese General once rode through parts of it, to try and spank a few rowdies, but he left; no one ever went back) ... and the Russians, who are still plenty powerful, would take such a move quite unkindly. Ditto for Manchuria, a place that once ruled China, leaving the Chinese some small claim. This leaves the Pacific, or more specifically the waters between the shores of China, S. Korea, Japan, Borneo and Vietnam. China has never been a naval power (1461 and a few years on either side aside), so their claims are not good. But no one else's are very much better, historically, to the various disputed areas ... and there's (likely) OIL to be had there ... ... and China needs oil. And the local competition, except for SK and Japan, is not very far ahead, technically, of China. And SK has to worry about N.K. I expect more events in this area, over the next 10 years. And much of it will be due to Teh JEF's policies and spending. Fasten your seatbelts.

ἔρως érōs) is one of the four words in Ancient Greek which can be rendered into English as “love”. The other three are storge, philia and agape. Eros refers to “intimate love” or romantic love; storge to familial love; philia to friendship as a kind of love; and agape refers to “selfless love”, or “charity” as it is translated in the Christian scriptures (from the Latin caritas, dearness).

Might it be more accurate to say you are not "in love" with her in a particular sense of the term, but may feel love for her?

but in China's defense, they already considered Tibet part of their territory anyway so it really wasn't an 'invasion'

423 Posted by: chemjeff hates snow at February 24, 2013 12:23 AM (BBWjt) China tried invading Vietnam in 1979. It turned into a fiasco for the Chi-Coms. They've been trying to modernize their military ever since Operation Desert Storm, but they face a plethora of problems (as has been mentioned before). The real question is how far the Chi-Coms will push the island ownership issue using the nationalistic hatred against the Japanese card. Once you take that cat out of the box, it's not so easy to control. And all this is compounded by the fact that our CinC doesn't seem to give two figs about regional stability unless it benefits him politically. To quote Admiral Painter: "This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it."

Not to equate the current situation with 1500 years ago, but... We say 'chinese' as if they have always been one ethnic group. And we make one of the greatest mistakes of historographic conventions. The Han, what is the 96+% majority of China ethnographically, wasn't always the only group. They arrived at that number for a reason. Please tell me you know this.

Right, but if you've got a long-time ongoing feud going with a major debtor, is blowing up the guy who owes you the money really in your all-time best interest? I'd think instead it's a great recipe to make sure you NEVER get paid, or that getting paid becomes as painstakingly difficult as possible.

I'm no military strategist/expert/whatchamacallit but if the Chinese want to make sure to lose a lot of market share, I'd think blowing us/the west up would be a great idea.

But I've a hunch I'm just exposing my ignorance of historical Chinese/rest-of-world relations with this comment...

I am tired already again of the grouping of letters that form the written word of obama.

Would there be a way to delete this name from this post's lexicon?

Could we instead just use -, or maybe a /, when we are forced thru our day to day postings to even refer to him? The pain of his very presence at 1600 for the next 4 years is bad enough to induce ulcers, can we at least assage our collective torment to delete his vulgar presence to an already difficult single key stroke?

431 CJ, I think you bailed last night before I added y comment, so I'll repeat it... When one is REALLY interested in someone, even their farts are cute. It seems as if maybe the fear of breaking up might be keeping you hanging on. Personal experience has taught me that, if it isn't working out, rip off the band-aid. If there's one thing that makes a break-up worse, it's having a someone drag you along because they think you just can't manage without them. When that happens, you not only have to deal with the pain of the break-up, but with the insult that comes from the suggestion that you would break into a million pieces. If you want to date, but have no plans for a long-term relationship, tell her. If you want a long-term relationship and she is not the one you want, then tell her. Dragging it out is worse for both of you.

I asked for a couple of reasons. The most intense love of my life was in college -- I went completely head-over-heels and rode a roller-coaster for two-and-a-half years. When the debris of that relationship's end stopped bouncing, I was probably in worse shape than if I'd been in an auto wreck. And, sadly, it would be impossible for me to ever recapture that kind of love because I could never again unthinkingly leave myself open to that kind of pain.

But even without that sort of a change, a man can't dip his toe into the same river twice -- not only has the water from the first dip moved down the river, but the man of a minute ago is not the man of now.....and as more and more minutes pass, the cumulative effect adds up. A decade and a half can be quite transformative.

I think somehow they've overlooked this syndrome also occurring between relatively new lovers. Maybe the vigorousness occurs less when younger? Or both are holding back some due to inexperience?

Women and men do have this habit of thrusting at the wrong time and if their both is really whaling away and the angle gets wrong . . . ouch.

For something that can be explained in 20 words, men will use 2 words and women 200. Women are the more expressive of the species with the use of language while men tend to be less expressive. MrsCaniac says it is because back in caveman times that the women tended to chatter to make sure that there was noise so that wild animals would stay away. Men tended to talk less since they were hunting and needed to be quiet. That is why men can just nod at each other or just wave and tell their wife that they "talked" to their buddy.

There is a southern man who is most sought after for his "Christmas Hams".

He slow smokes them over days in his smoke house, then hangs them in dry attic to cure over many more days. It is said, that this ham, thinly sliced over hot buscuits is a taste that is beyond a mere pleasure and has given him a rep that his most loyal customers now will refuse to give out his name for fear of not being able to obtain a ham for the holidays......

479 421 My semi-irregular update regarding the decline of one Hugh Hewitt. ... Lost cause. I gave up on him the night after the 2008 election. He didn't sound the least bit upset by Obama's victory. He just concentrated on the races that Republicans won and what the R's needed to do in the future. It seemed like it was just a game to him. He sounded like someone who just likes talking about politics for its own sake, without giving any hint of the dire consequences that I knew we would face. After that, I couldn't consider him to be a serious person. I haven't listened to him since.

Posted by: model_1066 at February 24, 2013 01:39 AM (7xPCu)

I grew up way back in the Age of Casseroles, so I'd make the following changes -- go for onion strips instead of diced, put a rack in the baking dish to let juices pool elsewhere, cut the potatoes so they don't fall through the rack, and make it in layers, bottom to top, of spuds, onions, meats. I might think to do the spud layer first and give it 20 extra minutes depending on the shape I used.

And, contra RWC, I like the Cajun touch. Bacon and roasted onions are pretty damned good, but you've got a lot of ground to cover with the drumsticks and spuds.

Yeah, the skin thing and the rack are working from the same mindset. I said 20 minutes in my earlier thought about the spuds -- that s/b 10. And pepper and garlic would be a nice addition on top of the spud layer -- but I'd crush the garlic instead of dice so it'd stick to things better.

Posted by: cthulhu at February 23, 2013 09:58 PM (kaalw)

511 Good evening. And, shortly, good night. Haven't been on much. Been training at a...*sigh*...call center, surrounded by kids barely out of diapers who are all clamoring for weekends off and who will be crushingly disappointed when reality bites them in the ass. Nervous as all hell, myself. The job is fairly straight forward but, uh...understand, in meat space I'm not the world's biggest talker. No, really. So trying to memorize scripts on top of procedures on top of dealing with ornery callers has my stomach in knots. Add on the fact that "training" has been half a joke, half serious bid'ness doesn't help. They "trainers" are as unprepared as I feel! *Big gulp* But I can't say I have much choice in the matter. Not a lot of other opportunities to go around in this area. I shall do my best! Otherwise...doin' okay. I think. Just polished off a glass of wine and am about to go to bed, I think. Church in the morning (!) followed by lunch with my asshole brother and his very sweet and better than he deserves girly girl. Still in good health, still have my what-passes-for-wits about me, still...goin', I suppose. Good night, Horde, for I do miss our time together. Bless you all and sweet dreams.

Way I see it, all China needs is patience. Barring some major breakthroughs in robotics and AI, Japan is going to be desperate for able bodied laborers on an increasing basis. Within a few generations Japan is just a province of China.

557 Japan's demographic implosion is happening now, while China's is still a good ways off before becoming critical. China has an overabundance of young males who can be shipped off to Japan and told to find a girl with whom to have as many babies as they like. No restriction so long as they do it in Jpan while remaining a Chinese citizen.

Then they start colonizing Europe with the same method. The battle for Europe is fought between Chinese and Muslims as there are too few ethnic Europeans to be a factor.

Robotics and AI have been five years away my entire life. What we've got so far is a pale shadow of the promise. The problems don't necessarily get breakthrough solutions in time to mitigate Japan's plight. Japan has a deadline looming and no amount of money thrown at researchers will guarantee a solution.

Having looked into it at some length, the current 3D printing thing (using plastic filaments) is way overhyped and thoroughly over-pushed. One major reason being that the plastics suck.

It's the equivalent of building things using squeezed-out toothpaste. If you're making a cup, and you start at the same place every layer, you'll get a seam. Everything has little ridges where you squeeze on another layer. if you have two walls and want to put a ceiling between them, you have to try to stretch goop across the divide until it will support its own weight.....

OTOH, the follow-on technologies decidedly do not suck and have been little explored (although they still won't do things like produce a functional toaster). I can easily see a scaled-up 3D printer making a building, for instance -- it is an everyday occurrence that someone erects a cinderblock frame, then drywalls the inside, puts siding on the outside, and adds a wood-framed roof with asphalt shingles. 3D printing has the potential of making the 8"x8"x8" cinderblock unit obsolete -- allowing uninhibitied freedom with curves, angles, and dimensions.

The casual sharing of CAD blocks in a nearly turnkey way -- as at http://www.thingiverse.com/ or http://defcad.org/ has huge possibilities for revolutionary change. There remain serious problems, however: first, how to move from CAD to CAM without going through the 3D filament-printer bottleneck -- CNC milling/routing/shaping isn't the whole deal, either; second, how this can be fit within a business plan -- monetizing and exploiting; and third, and perhaps most important, how to avoid government encroachment.

Distributed design is another area that has amazing potential. The 3D Maker community has people from the mechanical, electrical, materials, and software communities interacting in a very complex and free-flowing way -- which makes it very difficult to quantify or provide specific examples. But the almost crowdsourced nature of 3D printing has demonstrated that it can work and even that it can provide amazing results efficiently.

IMHO, it's a mistake to pump "3D printing" as being the game changer.....there are potential game-changers, indeed -- but they're cousins and nephews to 3D printing, not descendants.

577 So, when the plague came through there were massive declines in populations in very short time frames.  In general, the remaining people found a way to live on.

Often, they had enhanced relative wealth because they "inherited" all the stuff where the former owners were dead.  Sometimes they inherited entire farms, villages, or whatever they chose to carry off.

How does all this square with the dire predictions of population decline?  Dunno.  It is sort of obvious that our worthless currency will become more worthless when there are less people to trade their time for the currency.  OK.  Is that really the problem?  In modern society there are plenty of worthless people that will take the dole rather than trade their time for anything anyway.  If the people are worthless, what difference does it make if you have currency?  Who are you going to pay with it anyway?

Do all the demographic panic issues relate to thoughts that only the farmers, fisherman, and hunters will disappear?   Doesn't seem too likely that only food and shelter workers will be gone.  Or, it is only the concept that the lands of the people that are not reproducing will be turned over to backwards tribes that take over?  Right now it seems like Idiocracy is winning now no matter whose tribe is being considered.  So, does it really make any difference which backasswards tribe takes over?

I have noticed the likelihood that France will soon be a muslim nuclear power.  Given the way we shit ourselves over Iran I guess that could matter.  But I think that issue is already settled.  France will soon be a muslim country.  They have nukes.  Done deal unless someone is going to do something much more drastic than I expect.

So, all that crap aside, people made their way on earth with 2 billion less people well enough before.  Why wouldn't they do so again?

Usafruct.  The earth is going to belong to whomever is living at the time.

I hear about the panic of demographics all the time, but it almost has one of those Y2K vibes about it.  What am I missing?

I have never been on the Paki side yet. A little piece of Afghanistan touches China like a long bony finger of death along a mountAIN RANGE. Posted by: Stephen at February 24, 2013 10:30 AM (2HzUl) That's part of the truth, I think. The other part is that the prepper 'movement' (for lack of a better word) could coalesce into decentralized resistance to an authoritarian state under certain circumstances. Making these people fringe outcasts and objects of cultural derision serves an agenda. As an aside, I am kind of a quasi-prepper, I guess. I've been stockpiling comparatively small amounts of food, firearms, and ammunition, as well as means of water filtration and other survival-related gear. I do it because I feel a strong sense of uncertainty about the future that I think many of us share, and this is how I cope with that uneasiness. Bottom line, I don't want to worry about things like imminent starvation and dehydration if things fall part. You can call it crazy if you like. I call it being prudent. If history teaches us anything, it's that things always fall apart, either eventually or all at once. My girlfriend rolls her eyes at my stockpiling and reloading and weekly practice at the range that's become an almost religious discipline, but humors me anyway because she loves me.

Duke, that vile neo-nazi piece of shit, is not and has never been a conservative Republican--although Duke did run as a Republican in Louisiana once since he knew he wouldn't win any votes running as a Libertarian. It seems running for office as a Republican has gotten to be a habit among wacky extremist types attempting to hide their malevolent, hateful kookery behind the Republican brand. Look at Ron Paul.
