Overnight Open Thread (23 Nov 2013)
— CDR M

So there is breaking news that we have reached a deal with Iran on their nuke program. I'm pretty sure I've seen this movie before (see Nork deal with Clinton) and know how it's gonna end. This is nothing more than another short distraction from Obamacare as we really didn't gain anything from this deal (although the media makes it sound like this is awesome!). Tune in next week when Obama gives anti-ballistic missile secrets to Russia for some peanuts.

Why Obama can't wave away the Obamacare clusterfark.

So, if you want to understand the blindness and arrogance of the Obama White House in failing to appreciate the wave of rage and disappointment and disgusted wonderment that would hit them in the wake of the ObamaCare rollout, you need only consider these factors.

He has always had the protection of his liberal base.

He has always had the protection of Senate Democrats, who have not acted in any way to trouble him regarding these scandals and who have impeded aggressive investigations into them.

And he has always had the protection of the mainstream media.

As a result, Barack Obama and his administration have said what they felt they needed to say and done what they felt they needed to do for immediate political gain.

I'm still willing to bet that there were more reporters in Alaska covering Palin in 2008 than have been assigned to all the scandals in the Obama White House. Another belief destroyed

Well, well. Decade long study claims video games do not make kids more violent. Anti-gun crowd will have to look elsewhere for excuses.

Analysis showed that video games, when presented to children as young five, had absolutely no effect on the child's attention, behavior, or emotional issues. Televison, however, did affect some participants, specifically children between the ages of five and seven.

I don't expect to see democrats going after television entertainers anytime soon do you?

Thanksgiving Menu Generator

Having troubles filling out your Thanksgiving menu? Give the Thanksgiving Menu Generator a spin. I just might have to give the flaming punch a try.

Beer Pong Shots

Pretty amazing. If it's not CGI.

Cotton Ball Diet

Good lord there are some dumb people out there. Dangerous diet trend: the cotton ball diet.

The diet, as described in chat rooms, on YouTube videos and elsewhere on the Web, involves gobbling up to five cotton balls dipped in orange juice, lemonade or a smoothie in one sitting. The idea is to feel full without gaining weight. Some dieters chow down on the fluffy fillers before a meal to limit their food intake, while others subsist on cotton balls exclusively.

North Korea Leads The Way

I bet the environmentalists would just love to mimic the Norks. North Korea achieves 80% reduction in carbon emissions.

Honor Guard Fails

Even the best have an off day.

Grapes and Spiders

Just a friendly PSA. You might want to check your grapes at the store before taking them home. It seems they're finding black widows in the bags. For some reason, farmers have cut back on the pesticides that used to keep the spiders in check. I wonder why that is.

Doom?

I'm sure it is just a coincidence. Today versus the depression.

1 Dept. of Health & Human Services: Calm Down, Toots! The Dept. of Health & Humans Services has declared that “The marriages that were the happiest were the ones in which the wives were able to calm down quickly during marital conflict.” Where, then, are all the feminists shouting out that “well-behaves women rarely make history,” or that telling women to “calm down” denigrates them as nothing but unthinking emotional creatures? The same place they were when the previous Democratic administration got into un-feminist shenanigans! More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=4077

It's worse with Kerry. As I recall, Carter wasn't an official negotiator, he went to NK on his own accord and went public with the deal before he bothered to submit it to Clinton, who was supposedly MONSTROUSLY pissed off about it. But Bubba didn't have the balls to tell the world "that peanut-sniffing cocksucker doesn't represent the United States".

On the other hand, Kerry is bending over for mullah cock as official US policy.

91 ItÂ’s going to be 19 degrees here tomorrow night. My clothes dryer is in the back hall. I had a man here last week & asked him if he could replace the wooden door with a large window in the hall, leading to the porch, with a steel door. He said he could, heÂ’s supposed to replace roof and do some other work the second week of December. Going into that hall in winter is almost as bad as going outside.

109 The term "people of color" was invented by afro-centric marxists. They were angry that "white" had positive connotations of purity, nobility and cleanliness, while "black" had negative connotations of evil, death, and decay. So they tried to create their terminology. To define "white" people by what they lacked. Lacking "color" like someone who is ill, sick, or dying. Lacking "color" like something boring, bland, and uninteresting. The explicit goal was to Otherize white people. To demean and dehumanize. To define them as lacking.

144 --- ""Television, however, did affect some participants, specifically children between the ages of five and seven.""

"I don't expect to see democrats going after television entertainers anytime soon do you?"

After the next spree killer (and, sadly, there will be more) when the left have their predictable OMG-guns-are-the-cause hysterical calls to Do Something, the thing to do is to force through a GV rating for television, film and video games.

GV? "Gun Violence".

GV rating? No one under age eighteen allowed. Full stop.

This would be the biggest agonizing kick in the crotch Hollyweird have ever experienced. It would cost them literally tens of billions of dollars in revenue. Revenue which would then not be being kicked back into the coffers of the institutional left.

Because right now, Hollyweird are in the odd position of supporting a political party who want to ban guns across the board, while Hollyweird themselves at the same time practically print money with "entertainment" that's filled with shoot-em-up gun violence.

Break that connection, forcibly and permanently. Force them to live by the rules they intend to impose. They want a gun ban? Let's start with a gun ban in films marketed to those under 18.

No, let's start with rescinding the exceptions to firearms laws written to allow Hollywood to use guns that us unwashed proles are banned from using. Now that we have the capability to easily CGI every scary evil black rifle in existence into films and TV, there's no reason in the world for the entertainment industry to receive special gun privileges unavailable to the common citizen.

180 The "video games do not make kids more violent" is a cause and effect thing. Are they mental diminished to lose what is right and wrong before they play the video games and it just enhances the gap or the do the video games make them lose the line of what is right or wrong. Those that don't see violence outside the video game in real life can maintain what is real and what is a video game. Those that lose what is real and what is fake can kill thanks to the video games.

Just where did the "knockout game" come from. Some sick kids mind that spread or a video game. Something has broke in the kids as they see violence every day have it be with the gang in the hood or in a video game.

One point that's rarely made about Chamberlain...after Churchill assumed the PM slot in 1940, Chamberlain was in the cabinet and didn't snipe at him as so many of our "loyal" opposition does (...dissent is the highest form of patriotism!)

190 “We have reached an agreement,” Michael Mann, spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a Twitter posting that was echoed in a separate posting by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The deal, intended as first step toward a more comprehensive nuclear pact to be completed in six months, freezes or reverses progress at all of IranÂ’s major nuclear facilities, according to Western officials familiar with the details. It halts the installation of new centrifuges and caps the amount and type of enriched uranium that Iran is allowed to produce.

218 Got back from a large WMT that I don't normally go to in Boynton Beach.  This one is the biggest format store - the ones with tire/lube service bays.  Its also run by the local district manager and is considered a "showcase" store in the Palm Beach area.

The parking lot was about 70% of what I'd expected for this time of year on a Saturday night.  The place should have been jumping, but I was able to checkout with no waiting...TDNBW.

Anyway, I go to the pharmacy to get some stuff and check my BP.

The dead simple old VitaStat machine, with two freaking buttons,  had been replaced with some monstrosity with a touch screen.  NOW, you have to wade through a bunch of menus, enter a birth date, gender, ethnicity, sit through a 30sec ad video, be asked if you'd like some information about Obamacare email to you...and only THEN will it actually allow you to proceed to getting your BP checked.

So, after testing, it tells me that I'm at a "moderate risk" of developing hypertension, and my heart-rate is 10 bp/m higher that I'd expected.

Well, fucking DOH!  Wading through all that bullshit had me halfway to a freaking rage stroke by the time it gets around to sampling my BP.

FWIW, my BP is typically lower than normal...so low I can occasionally get brief vertigo standing up suddenly if I've been hunched over doing something.

THANKS BARACK!

275 In the last decade there have actually been tons of studies that have decoded the human family tree. Just google "genetic distance tree" or "genetic distance map". So we actually know how closely related all the world's ethnic groups are. There's no set # of ethnic groups. You can always look for every finer groupings. But you can have the computer just divide people into N # of groups based off genetic distance. If N=2 then genetic distance algorithms produce two groups: sub-Saharan Africans and everybody else. If N=3 then you get sub-Saharan Africans, and then the big split between, roughly West Eurasians and East Eurasians. As N increases you get ever finer grain. Eventually you start separating out the Norwegians from the Swedes, and the Koreans from the Japanese. Ethnic groups are really just really extended families. And, like extended families, they overlap and exist on multiple levels. Razib at Gene Expression does a good job of explaining human evolution. Genetic analysis is really letting us tease apart human deep history and the evolution of modern ethnic groups.

2- Media spin, which we all know will be all-in

353 Pygmies are probably the most genetically different ethnic group on the planet. Genetic analysis shows the pygmies and the rest of humanity split off long ago. So first was the pygmy and non-pygmies in sub-Saharan Africa. And then later in history was the sub-Saharan African and Eurasian split. It was the proto-Eurasians who mated with Neanderthals, and the split into Western and Eastern Eurasian branches. Then there were Eastern Eurasian branches that mated with the Denisovans in Melanesia. Everybody who isn't sub-Saharan African is 2-5% Neandertal. While Melanesians and aborginal Australians are 5-6% Denisovan.

It stays blocked off until they want to burn wood. When they do, they open that return, block off the main house return, and switch the central air to "fan only." This circulates warm air throughout the entire house. Of course, they're too lazy to actually burn wood. The couple of cords I split and stacked a few years ago is rotting in the bclosed.

444 It is hardly definitive when it is a self-reporting sample - and, at all events, we're not worried about what a 7 year old does, but what the 21 year old does after 14 more years of violent video games and glorified violence in popular culture...you know, not the two or three hours a day mommy allows a five year old to view/play, but the 16 hours a day a late-teen or twentysomething loser is doing in mommy's basement...

It is simply absurd to think that massive exposure to violence doesn't have an effect.  Why on earth do you think people advertise for business?  Because endlessly repeating lowest-common-denominator ads pitched at our baser instincts move a small percentage of people to change their behavior in a manner desired by the advertiser.  Violent video games and glorified violence in popular culture is advertisement - and it will move a tiny subset of the population to do things they otherwise would never have dreamed of doing.  Its not bad when an endlessly repeated ad for one sort of car gets someone to drop his loyalty to his current car...it is a bit of a problem when massive advertising convinces someone who wouldn't shoot up a school to go out and shoot up a school.

It is fitting that the Iranian Nuclear deal occurred on 11/23/2013.

11/23/2013 is the 30th Anniversary of the suicide bombing attacks on the US Marines and French troops in Lebanon. 241 Marines and 63 French soldiers died in the bombing attacks.

The bombers were believed to be Iranian sponsored Lebenese Shiites, and the predecessors to the Shiite Hezbollah organization.

IMO Hollande, Kerry, and Obama just spit on the graves of those 300.

Thanks CDR for the link to "Dad's: the original hipsters". Funny, funny shit and a blast from the past. Some of made my day...

-----------

"So hipsters, when youÂ’re breaking somebody elseÂ’s stuff at a party and throwing half-drank PBRÂ’s at the walls, remember thisÂ… The government changed the legal drinking age to 18 and your dad was the reason they had to change it back to 21."

"Your dad partied harder than you ever will and heÂ’s got the gapped-grin to prove it. In the whiskey-blurred memories of parties past, one liquor-filled legend raged harder than even god thought possible - your dad. He was a cyclone of  drunken destruction that engulfed innocent bystanders into his vortex of debauchery. Going out with him was like stepping into a strip club that was inside a cocaine-dance party that was on a speeding train that crashed into a brewery where Mike Tyson was practicing assault. So hipsters, when youÂ’re drunk screaming yolo before doing something youÂ’ll regret when youÂ’re sitting in the hospital, remember thisÂ… Your dad pre-gamed harder than you party. "

"Your dad is the reason fireworks arenÂ’t legal in every state."

"Your dad was into shooting shitÂ…"

"Your dad knew how to rage before you did and his friends are still afraid to give him whiskey because of it. At about half past tipsy, the quiet giant bear child awoke from his sober slumber and became a shit ripping, F5 party tornado. Blacked out and filled with mistakes, he went down in party history each night his alter ego was released. His actions became party folk lore, making him the Johnny Appleseed of getting gnar balls.  So hipsters, next time youÂ’re recanting a tale of intoxicated past and bragging about how awesome you were the previous night, remember thisÂ… Your dad is the patron saint partying and the reason the term “that guy” exists."

"Your dad played in a band nobody had heard of before you did and they were so indie that even you donÂ’t know who they are. Have you ever heard of the genre house-clash slam-punk fist-rock? Probably not, and your dadÂ’s band invented it. They sounded like an amplified boxing match inside of a stampede. He was the ring leader of noise that gave sonic bitch slaps to eardrums and brought the ruckus so hard buildings were condemned when they left.  So hipsters, next time youÂ’re finger-raping the guitar neck in an attempt to sound like the Portland backwoods while dreaming of never making it big so that you never have to explain why you sold out, remember thisÂ… Your dad could actually play an instrument, and maybe if you gave him a call, he could teach you a chord or two that might get you laid by something other than your hand. "

ObamaCare will spend the next 6 months repeatedly driving into a bridge abutment, and causing truly major pain for millions of Americans. I expect a body count, in the 100-150 range, nationwide, due to health-care red-tape, denials, etc. I therefore will be surprised if any Democrats are returned to the Senate, and I suspect a 30-50% drop in returns to the House. excellent point on nuclear power good for Iran, bad for US.

With the seismic activity there and the poor building quality, as attested by previous quake disasters, there won't be any long waits for nuclear disaster to be the bonus round after an earthquake.

I find it amateurishly produced, poorly written and acted and not the least bit interesting. Posted by: bill-o at November 24, 2013 12:27 AM (AWwDY) Wobbly-set syndrome can be an annoyance, but the good episodes were well written and had some great characters. Admittedly, this is mostly referring to the old Who. Compelling characters can usually trump many of those limitations. I present Blakes 7 as an example of that.

Yes, it was Powell whose brilliant military insight it was that there would be no problem with leaving the Marines defenseless.

Powell's career ought by rights to have ended the same day the Beirut barracks was blown up. That he went on to rise steadily from there and become quite personally prosperous merely goes to underscore that in modern America, failure IS an option. A lucrative one.

They gate guards were disarmed in the US at least as early as the late 70's. (We all knew the Marines were carrying unloaded guns at the local MCLB when I was in HS).  Then you have Beirut, as you pointed out. The miltary was disarmed on US bases by Clinton - how did that work out for Ft.Hood and the Navy Yard?

Even when I was just a kid in HS, I knew that it was stupid to have unarmed guards, anywhere, but especially around military installations.

You're not too badly situated....knowing a good vet could be really helpful (never know when a horse might need vancomycin or linezolid...), and even more so is knowing how to deal with situations. But weird, tricky stuff is going to get death-paneled first -- or just removed from the few specialists who have a chance in dealing with it.

I used to joke that anyone who ever got crossways with me, even back to when I was a kid, had better pray that I never develop an incurable, fatal disease....'cause six months of  "payback time" could include a lot of reckoning. That doesn't seem very funny now.

Step 1 -- develop a relationship with a doctor outside the United States. Step 2 -- look into purchasing catastrophic care (hit by truck, etc.) from an insurance carrier outside the United States. Step 3 -- drop health insurance for employees, and tell them why.

Posted by: Adriane... at November 23, 2013 11:40 PM (jdRXP)

678 Oh, and BTW -- this is not insurance advice or anything, but it appears to me that there is a rather large loophole in the way that Obamacare attempts to force people into their plans. The deal is, you have to enroll in a qualified plan during open enrollment and pay for an entire year of coverage lest ye be bankrupted when it is discovered you have AIDS or cancer or something horrifically expensive.

On the other hand, during open enrollment, insurers are forbidden to deny you coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

But plans are still handed out on a county-by-county basis, so you can still enroll in a plan any time if you move to a county where your old one doesn't apply -- which leads one to the inevitable conclusion that you should forgo overpriced Obamacare where you live and save your money, but the first thing you should do if diagnosed with AIDS or cancer or similar expensive diseases.....is to leave. Move to some county that includes Johns Hopkins or the Mayo Clinic, and get "gold coverage" there.

Note that this doesn't do a damned thing for you if you get hit by a truck or fall off a cliff....and I'm not an insurance guy, so you should do your own research.....but it certainly looks like that's the play. At home, "test, test, test" (even if it's on your own nickel) -- and when you get the bad news, bail. Then waltz into your new abode's Obamacare signup and say, "king me!"

Depends on your resources.....but let me assure you, this will rapidly become easier. Medical centers in the Bahamas, Costa Rica, India, Cayman Islands, Singapore, Hong Kong, and all over the world have got to be licking their lips. You need someplace with 1st-world technology, a rule-of-law attitude toward contracts, and easy access. [Think "places known for being tax havens".]

686 One thing to remember is that healthcare has been extensively gamed already, in large degree in anticipation of this day. Everything has a "list price" that absolutely nobody pays, but which serves as punishment if you don't "play along with the game".

As an example, let's say you have a doctor visit. Your doctor takes three kinds of insurance: insurance 'A' says you pay $20 and they pay $100; insurance 'B' says you pay $25 and they pay $95; insurance 'C' says you pay nothing and they pay $115. If you walk in without insurance, the doctor will charge you $1200 for the visit.

Obamacare says that this means that everyone should be insured, and seeks to muscle in on this by inserting the Feds as a middleman to the scam. Thing is, putting in a middleman NEVER REDUCES THE COST. So (best case) you'd end up with: insurance 'A' says you pay $25 and they pay $100; insurance 'B' says you pay $30 and they pay $95; insurance 'C' says you pay nothing and they pay $115, but the doctor stops taking insurance 'C'.

The real solution is to publicly post prices and live by them, so that the normal rules of the marketplace provide the best possible value for matched buyers and sellers. Under such a system, Karl Denninger had a guy who paid about $1000 in inflation-adjusted dollars for his wife to give birth in a hospital with a 3-day stay back in 1963.

Instead, we continually play along with this bogus "$1200 for an office visit" crap in order to justify how much the system is gamed.

687 Market Ticker link for childbirth article: http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?singlepost=3012292 -- read it and weep.

Seriously, before insurance and government and cost-shifting, hospitals would charge less than a grand (of today's money) for a woman to walk in the front door and have a baby. And this was during my lifetime.

Now look at where we are.

Thing about flu snorts is that (a) they're obviously not shots [GOOD!], but (b) they don't require incubation in chicken eggs and can more rapidly adapt to new strains of flu. Which means that I pay a bit more than a flu shot to (a) further injectionless technology, (b) save my sorry ass from exercising my phobia about being punctured, and (c) subsidize a better technology for the world to deal with a rapidly-mutating flu strain.
