NSA officers spy on love interests. LOVEINT. Oh I'm sure there is a lot of that going on and then some. I'm sure some POLINT is happening too. One would be naive to think it isn't, especially when you see what is happening at the IRS and what has happened to such people as Joe the Plumber, Christine O'Donnell and even the Presidential candidates in 2008 when a State Department employee improperly accessed their passport files. Oversight is a joke and nobody is punished. We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg with all of this stuff. Can't wait for the ObamaCare navigators that have had no background checks and little to no training to begin handling your PII (personally identifiable information), your medical history and records, your IRS records, financial data, criminal records, etc. Hell, census workers have more training. Bacon Bar

Oh. My. A bacon bar. Damn. Why did it have to be in Chicago? Here's the menu. I want to try the bacon peanut brittle.

Historic Uses Of Urine

From gunpowder to teeth whitener: The Science Behind Historic Uses Of Urine.

Even though early Europeans knew about soap, many launderers preferred to use urine for its ammonia to get tough stains out of cloth. In fact, in ancient Rome, vessels for collecting urine were commonplace on streets–passers-by would relieve themselves into them and when the vats were full their contents were taken to a fullonica (a laundry), diluted with water and poured over dirty clothes. A worker would stand in the tub of urine and stomp on the clothes, similar to modern washing machine’s agitator.

1911 Pistol

This pistol has fought in every American war for a century. I love the 1911 pistol.

What Apple is to consumer electronics, John Browning was to late 19th and early 20th century firearms. The 1911 is his most famous design. The typical 1911 is 8.25 inches from tip to tail and weighs 2.49 pounds empty — about as much as a trade paperback book. The 1911 is made of steel, steel and more steel, and takes a magazine that holds seven bullets.

The 1911 has seen service in World War I, Mexico, Haiti, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic (twice), Lebanon, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, Iran, Grenada, Panama, the Gulf War, the Iraq War and Afghanistan. It has chased bad men from Pancho Villa to Osama Bin Laden.

Liberals Taking A Swing At Churchill

Sir Winston Churchill was a drunken bullshitter - BBC helps to rewrite history.

It's no secret that Churchill had a speech defect which was apparent when he was drunk or sober. He also enjoyed a tipple and was often three sheets to the wind in the House of Commons; whether these had any negative affect on his wartime leadership or the reception of his speeches, is not proven.

In his desperation to justify these assertions this professor claims that his research revealed that when Singapore fell to Japan in 1942 one Londoner said that Churchill's rallying speech was "f*****g b******t and a f*****g coverup". The professor doesn't enlighten us on what the other eight million Londoners had to say.

This is obviously a rewriting of traditional history that paints Churchill as a great war leader and his speeches as inspirational oratory that kept the morale of the nation high during the dark days of Hitler's blitzkrieg across Europe, when Great Britain stood alone. Churchill possessed all the characteristics and values that self loathing 'progressives' despise. Patriotism, Christianity, Imperialism, free enterprise etc. The combative content of his speeches are enough to send any socialist, hippy, peacenick, or CND supporter into fits of apoplexy.

Detroit Wildlife

Looks like roving packs of stray dogs isn't enough for Detroit. How about some big cats too?

Ambling down the block a couple of weeks ago with his 1-year-old daughter perched on his shoulders, Antwaun Asberry sensed something was behind him.

He turned around and spotted a tall creature that appeared to be a cat, only a lot bigger.

“His tail is longer than my arm,” Asberry, a 6-foot-5 Detroiter with a lanky build, said of the cat. “I was like, what the (expletive) ... I don’t know what it is. I just want it gone.”

Four-legged feral predators are bad. Especially when the State discourages you from shooting them.

The two-legged feral predators are infinitely worse. Especially given that the State will not only discourage you from shooting them, but even if you shoot one in dire last-second bleeding-and-beaten fear-of-your-life self defense, the State will try to prosecute you for murder. cf. I have matured and determined that I will not stab them in the back, instead I will reach around and slit their throats. That way they can not make noise and all the blood will not get on my clothes. I hate taking the time to remove bloodstains before I toss clothes into the washer.

I think several companies still make them now. I think it's the second most common caliber for it, akshually. Someone who is more of a nerd than I am has those numbers. I would rather have a 9x23 if I were going with a smaller bullet. There's your .357 Magnum semi-auto right there. Were I rich I would have 9x23 and 10mm 1911s as well. The Delta Elite has a rep for being finicky but it's nothing you can't fix (has largely to do with misunderstandings about slide velocity that people figured out at a later date, I think).

109 Regarding Churchill...the following is a little bagatelle he issued after he got back from the "Atlantic Charter" conference with FDR in August, 1941. If this is a man three sheets to to the wind, I'll have what he is having. From http://ww2today.com/24th-august-1941-churchill-the-power-of-the-english-speaking-peoples "President Roosevelt is the thrice-chosen head of the most powerful State and community in the world. I am the servant of King and Parliament, at present charged with the principal direction of our affairs in these fateful times. And it is my duty also to make sure, as I have made sure, that anything I say or do in the exercise of my office is approved and sustained by the whole British Commonwealth of Nations. Therefore this meeting was bound to be important because of the enormous forces, at present only partially mobilized, but steadily mobilizing, which are at the disposal of these two major groupings of the human family, the British Empire and the United States, who, fortunately for the progress of mankind, happen to speak the same language and very largely think the same thoughts, or anyhow, think a lot of the same thoughts. The meeting was, therefore, symbolic. That is its prime importance. It symbolizes, in a form and manner which every one can understand in every land and in every clime, the deep underlying unities which stir and, at decisive moments, rule the English-speaking peoples throughout the world. Would it be presumptuous for me to say that it symbolizes something even more majestic, namely, the marshalling of the good forces of the world against the evil forces which are now so formidable and triumphant and which have cast their cruel spell over the whole of Europe and a large part of Asia? This was a meeting which marks forever in the pages of history the taking up by the English-speaking nations, amid all this peril, tumult and confusion, of the guidance of the fortunes of the broad toiling masses in all the continents, and our loyal effort, without any clog of selfish interest, to lead them forward out of the miseries into which they have been plunged, back to broad high road of freedom and justice. This is the highest honour and the most glorious opportunity which could ever have come to any branch of the human race."

213 "so, anyone know anything about sidearms used by the nva? say a pistol with a star on the grip? are they all tokarevs."

I don't know if they are all Tokarevs or Makarovs or what, but I chatted for a while with a guy who (plausibly) claimed to have been a LRRP during the Late Unpleasantness 1965-1975 in Southeast Asia.

They were originally issued the then standard .45 sidearm but found that after a week in the heat and moisture of the monsoon jungle, corrosion became an issue. As in, serious, won't feed, won't fire, won't rack, oh-shit issue.

I said, "Oil the thing, why dontcha?"

He said that was the first thought he had, but one of the older hands told him to knock it off. There were certain things the North Viets could reliably *smell* at tactical ambush distances, and one of them was the U.S. Army issue gun oil of the era.

(Other things they could smell? American tobacco smoke. And sweat from people who had been consuming dairy products. I kid you not. So, no Marlboros and no milk in the LRRPs.)

They all took to carrying captured NVA pistols, which handled the conditions better and did not have any giveaway scents. Also, he said the primers in the enemy ammo were more durable in those specialized backcountry situations.

That big cat in (D)Detroit... The story I read said it had black spots and was about 4 feet tall. If that's the case, and it has a long tail it sounds like a cheetah. Just my thoughts...

As long as there are packs of dogs running around to graze off of the people better worry about the possibility of a breeding pair. Provided they could survive the winters.

259 "I have a son who is going to be a 2014 graduate (high school). He has been getting e-mails and snail mail from about 20 different colleges recruiting him. Is this normal?"

It's normal in the era of the higher education implosion, to be sure.

As of about two weeks ago, aggregate college loan debt in the USA topped $1.2 trillion dollars.

I find that people's eyeballs start to spin like the wheels on cheap slot machines when I bring up quantities with a trillion attached, so here are three comparisons to put that figure in perspective.

(a) $1.2T is more money than the original 2009 Obama economic "stimulus" program. Which was itself more money than the 1950s Eisenhower interstate highway program and the 1960s Kennedy lunar landing program _combined_.

(b) $1.2T is more money than the total consumer credit card debt in the USA.

(c) $1.2T is more than twice the baseline fiscal year 2012 defense budget.

American colleges and universities are sucking in ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HUGE amounts of tuition money. Risk-free money, from their perspective. But the marks are starting to get wise to the scam, for the first time in a while.

If I were an administrator at one of those schools, and if I were a soulless greedy shithead, I would be offering admission to anyone with even a faint pulse. And I'd be sweetening the pot with bogus "scholarships" along the way to plant the hook.

Remind yourself, and your son, that student loan debt is not dischargeable. Not even in bankruptcy. And yes, that includes YOU if you co-sign his loans for him.

344 I saw a documockery about big cats loose in Britain. The funny thing was the role reversal - the skeptics were the kooks in this one, coming up with all sorts of psychological explanations for how people were seeing impossible animals, and the believers just said "well, up into the 70s it was legal to keep them as pets and we know for a fact several were released into the wild." It's totally implausible that talented nocturnal stealth predators could survive and reproduce in the prey-rich wilds of Britain and only be seen by thousands of people.

Posted by: Chelsea Monkey, Gruntled New Business Owner at August 24, 2013 10:55 PM (jucos) ----------------- Completely normal. You can expect to get a whole lot of that stuff the next several months. I was amazed at some of it, especially the fat color brochures, which you know have to cost a bundle. And then you wonder why certain schools repeatedly send you promotions when you have never expressed any interest in them. And your eyes start to glaze over. The same pictures, the same blather, the same pitch. They all fade into a blur after a while. Posted by: Margarita DeVille at August 24, 2013 11:50 PM (C8mVl) Don't forget that those colleges also charge a fee with the admissions applications, so the more applications they receive, the more the admissions office gets since an email is pretty much free. Back in 1982 when I was applying to college, it seemed like everyone applied to 3 colleges. Your fantasy college, one you probably would get in, and one that was your "safety school" that you knew you would get in. Now, it seems like the kids are applying to 8 or 9 schools.

Then a couple days later I felt bad about it, drove back to the same spot, and he walked up to me and I picked him up and took him home. So at least it had a happy ending. I've had this conversation a few times with clueless liberal urbanites.

"Really? Where's the nearest food warehouse you know of?"

"Um..." (pulling out iPhone)

"Don't bother to ask Siri. I can tell you that there are none near here. There used to be, but there aren't any any longer. Those places that used to be food warehouses are now yuppie loft condos."

"But the government! The government has emergency food supplies. In like, um, underground bunkers. Fallout shelters."

"No. Sorry. Wrong again. The government used to maintain extensive food supplies, by law, for everyone in the CONUS, during the Cold War years. A full year's worth. Then the Cold War ended and Bill Clinton got rid of all that. Peace dividend and all. There are still underground bunkers with food supplies, of course. For government bigwigs. Not for you. So, whatcha gonna do to eat?"

"Um...."

"I recommend you go to the yuppie loft condos. Free-range organic long pig. You do have a gun to shoot them with? No? You don't even know how a gun works? Oh. Oh dear. Well, guess you'll be losing some weight."

My only antenna, aside from a 2M J-pole in the attic, has been an 80M wire loop. You can't even see it from more than 20' away, so no complaints. As to the observatory..., no one expected it, and it is part of the upper structure of the house. The house itself was built in the 1920's, and the addition was made during a massive re-hab, which is really quite tasteful, and in-period. I'm with you on the death-ray. Russia have a shit-ton of good old low technology contact mines sitting around.

And quite quiet diesel-electric subs to lay those mines in fields.

No need to pull out the ace up the sleeve hypersonic voodoo ninja missile stuff when the good old vintage military technology can absolutely give NATO navies, and for that matter the U.S. Navy, a case of the shaking fits. They barely train for that stuff these days.

Not to mention the plausible deniability.

458  Name two "regulars" who have been treated as you claim  Right.  Well mr. detective if I was trying to hide from you I would have hidden my hash.  What does that tell you?

Peaches identifed me a rapist numerous times right here on this blog.  Mebbe one such as yourself is cool with that, mebbe you think that is acceptable behavior, but I don't. Tell me if that's cool or not in your universe and let your true self be known- I already know who I am.  It's cool if you like to picture her in her underwear or out of it, you may like her faux-sexy talk to a bunch of married men, but it's just not my style.  Maybe that's a fetish you can cherish for yourself.  Of course the many site super-betas come rushing to her rescue.  Sad really but they are as God made them.  She picks fights and in general acts like a shit often enough; ask BCochran.

But you'll come bravely riding to the rescue if there's a "vulgar slur".  Welcome to some enlightenment about who ya really are, son.

Why does little mero come to mommy's defense so eagerly?  Are there some mother issues mero might benefit from talking to someone about?

I would never defend a racist but thanks for the slander.  You're a good little self-elected hall monitor.  Maybe I missed it but I wasn't seeing what a few others did in what truthteller said.  I hope I just missed it because I honestly didn't see it.

I don't "sling shit" I just don't kiss the ass of any regulars.  If that's the secret of your success, your go-to approach, more power to ya I guess.  If you want to refer to a bunch of internet stranger-ladies as your "queen", be my guest.  Not my style, but I accept it.  I accord mad respect to the many here who neither play those little games or expect me to either.  The rest i put up with.

I've been around long enough to have seen about every group come under ridicule and have questionable things said about it here.  Seeing a bunch of movable goalposts.  That's fine, just genuinely trying to understand.

That's two of others' conflicts you've butted into now.  Who'd you say you were? HAHAHA

$1 first would be a major mistake.  Someone else will bid $2 or 50.  Being first is basically your "penalty" for being the newest one on stage.  You go first and everyone else has been up on stage for a bit.  It would suck to never get the chance to pick last, or to be the very last person called to come on stage to bid.

574 On a manual VW trans its always easy -- on level ground just keep filling until it starts to ooze out the fill hole.  Then you're done.

Working with a helper makes it easier cuz you can hold the bottle up top with a length of surgical tubing (Home Depot plumbing dept) on the fill spout and the guy under the car just pinches it off when the oozing starts.

I've only owned one car with an automatic, and it wasn't a VW.  The VW automatics are as notorious as the manuals are bulletproof.

Please Dr. Explodo kersplain Posted by: DAve at August 25, 2013 02:41 AM (OksBo) Potassium = Kalium = K Sodium = Natrium = Na Sulfur = S Phosphorus = P Potassium and sodium in gatorade, salt, &c. are cations in th +1 oxidation state. In those states they are stable and have a noble gas shell. Potassium and sodium metal have an electron in an s orbital that is highly reactive and will reacti with water as such: 2 K (or Na) + 2 H2O --> 2 KOH (or NaOH) + H2 Also, heat. Heat + oxygen + oxidizable gas = fire and kaboom Rb and Cs are even more reactive, though they don't look it in many youtube videos because they use less material (Cs is about 5 or 6 times as heavy as Na), and because they react so fast H2 doesn't have a chance to form.

My father died in 1977 and was still getting junk mail in 1996. It may have kept up after that, for all I know, but the address was no longer in the family.

Also, the family name would often be changed to Robins by people who assumed the correct name was a typo. Worse, my mother Herma, would be 'corrected' to be Herman. So mail came for many years for Herman Robins. This in turn meant that many companies thought there was a married couple name Allen and Herman Robins at our address. So I guess in advertising they've always been very accepting of gay marriage, so long as both participants didn't actually exist.

Among the most remarkable features of the house are the parquet floors. One craftsman worked for thirty-three years doing nothing but building, installing, and tearing up the floors! They are made of mahogany, rosewood, teak, maple, oak and white ash, arranged in impressive mosaics. Mrs. WinchesterÂ’s favorite bedroom, the one in which she died, has a notably special floor. It is laid so that the sunlight streaming through the windows appears to change the dark strips to light, and then back again, when viewed from the opposite ends of the room.

See Adriane you've got some stiff competition

Also read on the internet that it sounded to the opinioner that people having trouble with said sealant were not letting the fresh concrete dry after the power washing before applying said sealant. i.e. trying to do the whole project in 1 day - wash - stain - seal ... Not our case as we already have several coats of paint on said concrete. But if the sealant dries opaque, the only thing you can do is scrape it up and reapply and after all the painting and stenciling .... I'm really not going to risk it ...

713 There was a SF novel published in the late 80s / early 90s that had the Winchester House as one of its primary locations. I cannot remember the title or author.

The story was set twenty-something years after a strange event occurred. One day, about 98% of humanity simply disappeared without a trace. No corpses. Nothing. This left the remnant population understandably freaked and many of them in the area near San Jose began to converge on the Winchester House and take up residence around it, with some of them restarting the endless construction. Also, the children born after the event had oddly metallic colored hair but were seemingly normal in every other way the remnants were able to discern.

The main character is a young woman who was possibly the first birth after the disappearance. The story gets into a lot of quantum mechanics Schrodinger scenarios. I wish I could remember more. I suppose the author didn't do much else or died, as I don't think I've seen anything else from the person and the book is long out of print.

I grew up back in the day when chemistry sets were first being "sanitized" -- some of the old ones would allow you to accidentally synthesize cyanide gas or chlorine, and they tried to clamp down -- but there were plenty of exciting things you could end up with.

I read a lot of books, sometimes I find an old one and start reading it and... oops, did that already. People seem to like it.

728 not letting the fresh concrete dry after the power washing before applying said sealant

Trapped moisture under clear finishes will produce a milky white cloudish look.

If I pressure washed concrete, that shit's gonna be drying out for days, not hours.  Bare concrete is water permeable like a sponge

The Behr - Wet Look Sealant looks to be a water based acrylic (like a lot of kitchen floor acrylic finishes) since they specify soap/water cleanup procedures.

The problem is the acrylic is a plasticy'ish material and as it polymerizes its gonna start locking trapped moisture in (and turn cloudy).

That's why they say don't apply it in direct sun (even when temp/humidity are OK) -- it'll polymerize too quick and still trap moisture.

Inside, where you have some control over a room, you can drop the humidity with a dehumidifier.

740 I suppose if you weren't in a hurry, you could do it like one drop of nitric acid every few minutes.  Set the apparatus up out in the woods with a very conservative drip rate and leave it alone for a while with some sort of hacked up fridge cube maker dropping fresh ice in the reaction cooling bath constantly.

If the shack is still there when you come back, you're good to go ;->

743 to me it's a strong smell

Might be a skosh of ammonia in it as an adhesion aid to cut any trace surface oils left over that settle out of the air.

When I prime old concrete with a latex primer, I'll thin the crap out of it with ammonia.  It soaks in a lot better forming a mechanical bond rather than laying on the surface and even sticks pretty good over old stubborn oil spot remains on a garage floor that even an acid etch won't remove.  subsequent coats can go to a more normal mix

744 Speaking of old UK music, there is a trivia question I've long had but never found the right place to ask. In the early 80s, a bunch of UK music videos had the same guy in them: middle-aged, a bit overweight, closely trimmed white beard. He must have turned up in at least a dozen videos, though the two that stand out the most due to frequency of MTV play is Squeeze 'Black Coffee In Bed' and The Fixx 'Saved By Zero.'

Who was that guy?

746 From what my brother, a long time Geek Squad agent who mostly works from home via remote access now, pretty much every store has an external drive put aside for saving interesting stuff found on customer systems. It is completely against corporate policy but it's there just the same.

I've had similar experiences in my career, such as it is. When I was doing tech support for DSL Extreme, I once had to figure an email problem that required me to see some of the messages first hand to determine if it was a client side issue. It seems the customer's primary reason for having an email account was to receive massive amounts of gay porn images.

Another memorable occasion was repairing the home system of a long time client of my boss, a small accounting business. It turned out most of the material on the drive was from their kid. This including a complete set of Traci Lord's underage porn career, a variety of script kiddie tools including some for executing credit card fraud. I was torn over whether I should say anything about this stuff but I decided that I had an obligation to warn them that the  underage porn was flat out illegal to possess and the rest of the stuff could lead to even worse trouble for them. They were a bit shocked to find out what the kid had been into.

748 We never even looked at users' content unless we had both the user's and IT's chain of command sign off on it. It was another thing if the dumbass *told* us about it, and we did always remind them that work machines were not private and not to put anything on it they didn't want their boss to see.

750 #751

On a domain connected system where the user couldn't install anything, there would be no need or reason to look. With a home machine it can be a huge time waster if you restore a machine and the first thing they do when they take it home is run the same crap that trashed it in the first place.

If I have to save you from yourself, yeah, I'm going to have to look at your file names at least. Can I help it if a file named MYTHREESOME.AVI looks like a trojan?

751 Unlike the NSA, we never had an IT organization large enough to snoop and have time for anything else. Generally it was the IT department demanding standards. Mind you, if they went up the chain we'd staple your dirty laundry to your forehead. In my last job there were two such incidents, one was an idiot and the material was not really that offensive, we just locked everything down and made their remote system more of a dumb terminal. Don't know or care what happened between them and their boss. The second case there was nothing to find, just a suspicious boss. And yes, the target of the suspicions was the only conservative in the department, why do you ask? And no, we didn't cover anything, didn't need to. It was just office politics. We logged their traffic and history and presented it to the boss. Nothing came of it.

758 I worked in the courts for years, and I know for a fact that people would use the criminal records system to look up people they wanted to check out, like new boyfriends, etc. So of course these NSA people would do it! And they have a lot more info in these databases too.
