Overnight Open Thread (24 May 2013)
— CDR M

Don't pull a SCOAMF move this weekend and forget what it is supposed to be about but do have fun with friends and family and take a moment to honor the fallen this Memorial Day. USS Porter Collision

In the aviation world, we have a lot of training in something called aircrew coordination training (ACT) or cockpit resource management (CRM). Careful analysis of aircraft mishaps had determined that poor aircrew coordination and loss of situational awareness had contributed to or caused over 60% of mishaps. ACT was implemented in order to improve aircrew communication and situational awareness and lower human error in aircraft mishap rates. It is painfully obvious after listening to the audio of the USS Porter's bridge leading up to the collision that ACT/CRM training might be of value there.

I imagine this book, How To Avoid Huge Ships is a pretty popular read now. The book reviews are teh funneh.

Good God. Full scale Lego X-Wing fighter. Only 5,335,200 pieces! I'm disappointed though. The S-foils can't lock into attack position.

24 On Memorial Day I would like to remember my paternal grandfather who served in the Pacific as a Seabee heavy equipment mechanic. He later told my Dad he didn't want his kids to grow up to be sailors or mechanics, and didn't even teach my uncle how to change his own oil (although he did teach Dad). I'm sure I was a great disappointment to him, being both sailor and mechanic (sort of, Avionics Tech anyway).

He survived the war and hated anything Japanese until he drank himself to death in the early 70's. He had a wicked sense of humor, and I'm proud to be named after him.

103 64 17 So reading about the Islamist head choppers in England, I was amazed to read that about a year ago a French Islamist went on a similar murder spree killing French soldiers and Jews. Did I just plain miss it, or did the media not give it much coverage? Posted by: 18-1 at May 24, 2013 10:36 PM (zPVBH) Me too! I am guessing they played that down a bit, unlike how they usually highlight Islamic terrorism, Posted by: Kalneva at May 24, 2013 10:49 PM (XyrkB) I think if the media "knows" that it is a Jihadi, then they don't report it. When they think it could be a Christian/Jew/Buddhist/Sikh/Taoist the media reports the hell out of the story and details until it becomes apparent that they are "Peacers". Notice the coverage of Shithead and Speedbump. Pretty much a media blackout now.

Folks,

I am not handy.  But y'all already knew that.

Well today I proved it again.  Lawmower was acting up, checked all the various bells and whistles.  "Holy shit there's like no oil in this thing!" (Lawn mower was a gift from FIL, who got it from a friend of his who fixes up used mowers as a "hobby." It's actually a really nice Craftman 6.5HP mower with a 2.2hp self-propelled part, in reasonably good condition.  Anyway...)

I (being my moronic self) added way to much oil to it and started it up to a cloud of smoke!  One turkey baster later (nifty fact, it's really hard to find a turkey baster these days, and I didn't want to just drain it because I didn't have a pan) I've got it back up and running again, until hallway down the yard it dies.

Frustrated I go in, eat some dinner, come back out and notice it's choking again.  Go through all the checks again, realized the bag was full. (I don't normally bag, but the grass got crazy tall while we were out of town, and the mulcher can't take it.)

Folks, I'm just not handy...

But the back yard is cut (ran out of daylight) I'll deal with the rest tomorrow.

114 If you're in the DC area, you should go to the Easter sunrise service at the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington Cemetery. The Amphitheater is on the opposite side of the Tomb of the Unknowns. You have to get there around 5 a.m. to get a good seat (the service starts around 6:30). The service is bang-on 1 hour in length, and after it's over you have the grounds pretty much to yourself if you want to walk around.

Chem Jeff, you should shoot a wide variety, as many as you can. Whatever feels comfortable and 'natural' in you hand, and the one that has an 'intuitive' operation to load, chamber and make safe after shooting.

After that, whatever you can afford to shoot on a consistent basis. Like 100 rounds every couple of weeks. It does no good to own something youre not proficient with.

Seriously, the nice thing about guns is that it is hard to go wrong with anything made in America. Get a good instructor to teach you gun safety and marksmanship. When you find a gun that you like - go with it.

"I never thought I'd see you licking his back side."

I learned many important swear words and how to curse both individuals and groups that day.

257 Dover AFB is the place to start for concerned civilians since all fallen service members have to be processed through Dover on their way to the final resting place, either like Arlington or back home at the family plot.

Now for those in the military there are ways to handle this.  If they have reported their concerns to their chain of command and nothing has been done to correct the problems they are seeing, then they have one option left before calling Congress.  They must have the courage of their convictions and talk with the IG.  If this bothers them and they want this problem fixed, then they must be willing to talk to the IG if their chain of command has failed.

What matters more?  Doing the right thing no matter the cost?  Or just sit there and let bad things go on.  If they just stand there and privately gripe, then they are violating their oaths.  Both the NCO, an E-6 means a crew chief and someone in charge of at least a few people.  Leadership and all that.  O-4 is also supposed to be a leader and usually a non-flying O-4 is in charge of a section with at least one senior NCO and a few Airmen.

Poor leadership leads to poorly performing units.  Poorly performing units usually gets people killed.  Will also see a high turn-over rate as either people seek a better unit or they just quit.

I remember when I went through USAF ALS one definition for leadership was stated thus - 'Leadership is the art of encouraging others to accomplish the mission.'  How can anyone lead if they are unwilling to do what they should do?  That is an untrustworthy leader.

/hops off soap box.  This is a hot button issue for me.  I have endured POS NCOs who would willingly backstab to keep their jobs or even worse stick their noses so far up an officer's 4th point of contact I was afraid if the officer suddenly stopped that NCO would fly out their mouth.

The fallen deserve all the respect and care that can be given them on their final trip home since they have given the last full measure in service to their country.

Unfortunately, I've only got the outside of the tier done, and I'm going to need to buy a bit more lumber and supplies, so I guess I get to exile myself to the couch.

Funny that almost 70 years later, the Japanese are probably our second strongest ally.

Personally, I wouldn't have a novice touch a handgun until they were proficient with a long arm - safety, cleaning, maintenance, responsible storage and transport, etc. Then, when they could reasonably commit to regular practice, introduce handguns.

My kids started with single shot .22s, then magazine fed - bolt .action .223, then single shot .20g (skipped .410), and are now learning the handgun basics on a .22 revolver.

You have a misconception of the character of the WWII Japanese army/navy.

Conditions were horrific in many Asian countries not because of Japanese tyranny, but because of Japanese brutality. Human lives weren't worth anything to them.

The Japanese, as we now know, did experiments on American prisoners of war. Bing "unit 781." So while I attempted to talk my father out of his burning hate for the Japanese, I understood its source.

If the assholes in question are in uniform, sometimes the only way to handle such situations is to kick it up the chain of command.

Depending on the chain of command in question, this may or may not yield results.

However, if the pilots in question are civilians working for a private air freight company, knowing the name of the company and the flight number could be very useful on its own.

American POWs came from the Philippines and places like Guam and Wake.  Dutch POWs from Java.  British POWs from the fall of Singapore and Burma.  Aussie POWs from Singapore and Burma.  Along with naval POWs from all those services.

American and Dutch civilians were interred in camps.  Some of the Dutch women, like Korean women ended up as forced comfort girls of the conquering Japanese.

The Japanese would beat or kill a military prisoner if they failed to show proper respect to the Japanese soldier or the Emperor, it was whomever the proddy Jap decided was disrespected.  Japs starved the men, worked them like slaves, denied them medical care, and stole Red Cross packages.

Of the eight Doolittle Raiders captured by the Japanese. A Jap kangaroo court convicted all of war crimes like strafing school children.  Three were executed by firing squad.  Then the Emperor had 'compassion' on the remaining five.  Solitary confinement for life.  One of them died of malnutrition.  Meanwhile in reprise for the help the Chinese gave the escaping Doolittle Raiders, an estimated 250,000 Chinese were murdered.  On top of the 300,000+ Chinese civilians already butchered by the Japs at Nanking.

When conservatives started saying that once "gay marriage" became the norm, that people marrying children and animals and polygamy would be pushed. The left laughed at us saying "no way, that is just wrong". Now that gay marriage is marching its way through the country, NAMBLA and others are gearing up to make their "tastes" the accepted norm.

Yup.  So now we're supposed to accept that 18 year olds having sex with 14 year olds is natural and normal.  Oh, by the way, we also need to allow 18 year old gay men to hang out in the woods with 14 year old boys under the guise of "scouting".  Worried that they might form relationships?  Why that's just bigotry and it would never happen!

Here's mine ....

Could have changed history, February 10, 2013
If this book had been available in 1969, Ted Kennedy would have read How to Avoid Huge Ships. On that night back from the party, he would have known how to tell the difference between Huge Ships and small islands. But since Sen. Kennedy didn't know How to Avoid Huge Ships, or what a huge ship looks like in the dark, he mistook Chappaquiddick Island for a Huge Ship and swerved off a bridge to avoid it. Had the accident not happened, Ted Kennedy would have been elected President all thanks to How to Avoid Huge Ships (and how to distinguish them from small islands).

How to Avoid Huge Ships could have changed history, along with a book on How to Drive Huge Oldsmobiles

Posted by: boulder t'hobo at May 24, 2013 11:34 PM (QTHTd)

In the European theater, even with Nazism, there was a common Judeo-Christian culture and a concept of rules of war, as well as the memories of WWI.

In the Pacific theater, the Japanese had developed a death cult around their emperor; indivduals were worthless, the only worthwhile use of your life was to use it for the emperor.  Surrender was dishonorable - die to the last man.   Out of that culture, there was top-down brutality from officers to soldiers, and soldiers to civilians/PoWs.

Out of that culture, you had murder of PoWs, mutilation and booby-trapping of corpses, targeting of medics (normally unarmed and protected by Geneva conventions), and that's just the atrocities committed on the battlefield.

Hopefully you're getting a small idea of why the strong reaction.

The ones that flew on Forrestal were actually based in Rota Spain, VQ-2, they would fly on when we got to the Med and fly off when we left. 391 A whole lotta snark on that how to avoid big ships book, but that shit can be serious. True story, when I was younger and on the yacht club's sailing team, one of the club members would let us use his 44ft sail boat for the junior big boat regatta on Long Island Sound.

So it's a moderate breeze day, taking a long tack upwind, enough wind for everyone to be up on the windward rail. Well, the ship's owner thinks he hears something and peeks under the boom, immediately screams, "Tack, tack!" Skipper throws the rudder across and we all scramble to the other side to see the bow of a barge close enough for us to touch.

Fucking thing would have destroyed us. Must have been coasting so we couldn't hear it, just so happened our boat's sails blocked it from our vision the whole way. Of course, he fucker on the bridge should have seen us and blew his horn, but he must have been jerking off somewhere. He did blast it at us like two minutes after we tacked away, at which point we proceeded to flip him off and moon him.

But anyway, serious business that big boat stuff.

434 Events of the day -- we pulled the plug on Comcast, having turned on AT&T's U-Verse for the same price on Wednesday and getting more channels, faster internet, DVR, and a free phone line. Called yesterday to turn Comcast off, only to be told I "wasn't authorized" because the account is mailed to the BH (we had gone through this before and I had been added as an authorized party years ago). Mind you, I cut the checks....

OK, sent email to the BH and she called 'em to turn it off. Took her four calls to do it. She emailed me the amount I should pay on the final bill and location where the equipment should be dropped.

Went to the location with the gear, where they took my name and told me to wait until it was called. There were about eight Comcast reps, and the waiting list was five people long.....but only three reps were serving customers at any time. I suppose I should be happy that none were openly fapping, but I suspect that some were playing solitaire.

After finally getting called, I gave 'em the stuff. Everything got unwrapped, and each cable box, remote, and power supply was set to one side -- everything else was returned to me. They scanned the cable boxes, then placed all of the stuff they'd isolated into a plastic trash can, and gave me a receipt. Took about 45 minutes -- most of which was waiting while the obviously idle didn't call customers.

It is hard to believe that a company can have the institutionalized rudeness of the DMV and still keep going -- but somehow, Comcast pulls it off.

This comes after I flew to NC on April 8 and their maintenance people cut the internet off my drop April 10. It's a good thing that I'm pretty self-contained when I travel, because if I'd VPN'd back to the homestead they would have left me stranded.

I think they recruit Comcast employees from people who can't qualify for HHS.

Don't quite know how to say it delicately, but there are a lot of "new Canadians" in B.C. who work as truckers, despite not necessarily being fluent in English, or even having a driver's license. There was a nasty wreck at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal a few years ago, and the driver of the truck was driving on a cousin's license. Not ROP, but from the neighborhood.

so I am in my office and these retirement account guys stop by, they want me to set up a supplemental retirement account with them.  I say sure, why not, after all I had just gotten a (meager) raise and it would probably be better in the long run if I put that money aside instead of wasting it on hookers 'n' blow.  And I ask the guy: is this an annuity account?  Because I don't want an annuity.  He says no.  Okay I sign up.  I put the papers in a drawer, don't really read them.

So this last couple of weeks I've been cleaning up my office and I come across the papers, and I actually read them carefully this time - it's a fuckin' annuity!  The guy flat out lied to me.  Grrrrrrr.  Pisses me off.

so I'm going to HR first thing on Tuesday to get the payroll deduction canceled.
