Overnight Open Thread (25 May 2013)
— CDR M

So when are teachers going to get the same level of attention as the military and the Catholic Church in regard to sexual assault? I know actual data is hard to come by in this regard but it is estimated that 5 to 6 million students will be sexually abused by school employees or teachers before they graduate. The best available study says 10% suffer some form of abuse. Oh I'm sure that the fact that teachers are largely unionized, liberal democrats has something to do with why they aren't talking about it breathlessly everyday like they are the military and whenever Catholic Church scandals pop up.

There is no federal clearinghouse for statistics on allegations of educator sexual abuse. Such information is frequently informally collected on an ad hoc state-by-state, or even district-level basis. Many districts and the teachersÂ’ unions are reluctant, at best, to make such information freely accessible. Since these are state-level cases (although some repeat educator-predators do cross state lines), there are no F.B.I. files, reports or statistics specifically addressing teacher predation. Nor are such reports centrally collected elsewhere.

I wonder if anyone will call out this judge like they did the generals who changed the punishments on their cases? Judge slashes sentence for Virginia teacher who slept with student, citing diagnosis of hypersexuality. So being a nympho is an excuse?

A Virginia high school teacher who slept with a student will only spent four months of her 11-year sentence behind bars after she was diagnosed with hypersexuality.

Kathleen Cawthorne, 33, will be freed more than a decade early after a judge ruled she could not control the sudden sexual urges that took over her body.

Any takers on how this judge would've ruled if the teacher had been a man with uncontrollable sexual urges?

Grumpy Cat photo. Pin-Up Queens

Interesting article giving you a peek into the pin-up business from back in the day. Pin-Up Queens: Three female artists who shaped the American girl. Probably NSFW as there are some boobehs way down in the article.

you might be surprised to learn that, according to pin-up art expert Louis K. Meisel, three of the most talented pin-up painters from the Golden Age, roughly the 1920s to the early 1960s, were women. “Pearl Frush, Joyce Ballantyne, and Zoë Mozert were terrific, as good as any of the men—in fact, better than many of them,” Meisel says.

Myths

5 myths about curing common injuries (that you probably believe). I still see people tilt their head back for nose bleeds. No surprise given that a majority in this country still think social security is an individual retirement account.

And speaking of wounds, science says rub some dirt in it. OK, not really dirt but clay that is rich with certain metallic ions.

It turns out thatÂ’s probably because some clays--particularly clays rich in a certain group of metallic ions--work as antibacterial agents. In their study, the ASU researchers tested a variety of different clays with similar mineral composition but ranging compositions of metallic ions against E. coli and MRSA. They found that five metal ions--iron, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc--could fight the two bacterial strains, both of which are increasingly difficult to kill using standard antibiotics and antibacterials.

Periodic Table Song

I have a feeling chemjeff likes this one. He'd probably like it even better if it had Argentinian Dancers (NSFW).

Texas Flying Legends Museum

Kudos to the Texas Flying Legends Museum for filling in for the Thunderbirds (grounded due to sequestration) at the graduation ceremony at the U.S. Air Force Academy. That's going to be one hell of a flyover.

The group of volunteer pilots will bring two P-51 Mustangs, one each of a P-40K Warhawk, FG-1D Corsair, TBM-3E Avenger, B-25 Mitchell, Japanese Zero and FM-2P Wildcat for the Academy flyover, Voelkel said.

Falling Skies

Well with Game of Thrones coming to an end soon and The Walking Dead in hiatus until October, I suppose I'll give the 3rd season of Falling Skies a shot as there really isn't anything else on. That I know of anyway. The show did improve a bit last season and I don't expect a lot of filler episodes since there are only 8 episodes left so I'm expecting it to be action packed. Here's the season 3 preview.

Rare Planetary Trio

Great question about teachers and sexual assault. I've been wondering when that would be exposed myself.

Also, I wonder when female sexual abuse in Islamic families and among Islamic clergy will be reported by the media. Probably during the next sweeps week because they're getting right on that.

24 "Falling Skies" is produced by Spielberg, so I assume that it's leftist. Is "Defiance" any good yet?

Also, Spielberg is on record as thinking that it might be okay to do a twelve year old if she came on to him first [http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-595581.html]. Someone should really ask him about Corey Feldman. But I've said that already.

33 We saw Star Trek Into Darkness today. I was pleasantly surprised by it. I liked the juxtaposition of the old timeline with the new timeline. And the jokes were funny. But, there's a fairly long sequence of the Enterprise tumbling (that isn't a spoiler, because what would a Star Trek movie be without the Enterprise in some sort of danger) and it is pretty nauseating to watch in non-3D so I imagine there were some who got sick watching it in 3D.

52 FM-2P Wildcat - F for Fighter, M for General Motors, 2 second version, P for photo-recon.  The -2 GM Wildcat went back to only 4 .50cal machine guns, had a taller tail, and a more powerful engine.  For photo-recon the Wildcat was fitted with two vertically oriented cameras pointing straight down just aft of the under-carriage.  The FM-2 was a rocket because of the tweaks.  By the time it arrived in the Pacific, the Wildcat was serving only on the escort carriers.  It's big brother the F6F was aboard all the fleet carriers.

FG-1D Corsair - F for Fighter, G for Goodyear, -1 first version, D is sub-variant.  Identical to a Vought built F4U-1D with bulged canopy, that big three bladed prop and fitted from the factory with a centerline bomb-rack that could carry either a 500lb bomb or a fuel tank.

Technically speaking with the FM and FG there should be a 1 between the letters to signify first plane of type made by the manufacturer.  But it was Navy habit not to put the 1 there.  Hence FF-1 or FiFi was Grumman's fist fighter for the Navy.

62 "So when are teachers going to get the same level of attention as the military and the Catholic Church in regard to sexual assault?" When I was in school in the sixties there were rumors about certain teachers who would end up leaving in the middle of the school year. The matter of sexual abuse was handled by the schools in the same way the Catholic Church handled it. The person was quietly removed, and the parents were told, and officials told themselves, that it was easier on the victims to handle it quietly rather than prosecute. When I was in junior high one science teacher left in the middle of the year. Everyone joked about his being a biology teacher and that something was going on between him and a junior high girl. About fifteen years later he was in the news. He had been teaching in a school in a neighboring city and was arrested for sex with a student. There was another teacher who never spent more than 2 years in any one district. The fact is that perverts get jobs or volunteer positions where they have access to victims.

127 "The group of volunteer pilots will bring two P-51 Mustangs, one each of a P-40K Warhawk, FG-1D Corsair, TBM-3E Avenger, B-25 Mitchell, Japanese Zero and FM-2P Wildcat for the Academy flyover, Voelkel said."

Honorable, traditional, and historically significant, but the wrong lesson to convey to the young Academy graduates and their families.

Fly different aircraft instead. Enemy aircraft.

The last time that American ground troops in contact on the front line consistently had to worry about enemy tactical air overhead was, roughly, early 1944. After that, in both the ETO and PTO, unchallenged U.S. air superiority was gained, and it really hasn't been consistently absent at any time since then.

(Naval forces in the PTO had to worry about kamikaze attacks at sea until the end of WWII, but the end of that war also marked the end of kamikazes.) If you were an American grunt on the ground, and you looked up, the odds were that you would see only friendly aircraft overhead.

That comfortable situation of reliable air superiority is going away. Fast. Soon. Scarily. America's military, due to dumb decisions, bad systems, high costs, and underspending, is ceding control of the skies again to aggressive challengers.

We should have a flyover of both historical and modern enemy airpower instead. To illustrate and dramatize the stakes. Perhaps some simulated strafing and bombing of the graduation crowd would help get the point across. This stuff matters.

128 62 "So when are teachers going to get the same level of attention as the military and the Catholic Church in regard to sexual assault?" When I was in school in the sixties there were rumors about certain teachers who would end up leaving in the middle of the school year. Posted by: nerdygirl at May 25, 2013 10:51 PM (1nIUJ) At one of the high schools I went to, a classmate banged the Spanish teacher, who was married to a cop. Pretty stupid move, but she was pretty hot. Next high school I went to, one of the teachers married a student about a month after she graduated. He was still teaching when I was there. Weird how these things didn't become a big deal until well after a few priests and ministers started to cornhole young boys.

220 Had to pull out the reference book to comment on the B-25J in the picture.  The plane appears to be painted as a solid nose B-25J assigned to the 499th BS Bats Outa Hell of the 345th BG.

People talk of solid or gun nosed Mitchells and usually refer to the 75mm armed G/H models.  But the J was in an all together different category of scary.  While the G and H Mitchells rapidly ran out of targets worthy of a 75mm round, the machine gun armed J always found business.  With 8 in the nose, four in blister packs on the sides, and if the top turret gunner locked his turret forward; the J could aim 14 .50cal machines at a target.  Very little can survive such a hail of fire.

226 giving it a jar gets those connections talking to each other.

The drives in the old IBM PS/2 Model 50/70 were notorious for developing a problem called "stiction" where the heads got kinda stuck to the platters and presented just enough resistance the drive wouldn't spin up.

One cure, with the power off, was to simply lift one corner of the machine up about 2" and drop it back on the desk.  That worked about 95% of the time and things went back to normal.  Another cure was to toss the machine in the trunk of your car and drive down a bumpy road for a ways.

It's a place that has a bunch of those giant blow up slides and obstacle courses and shit. We were there for 3 hours. Running all over, pizza, cake, ice cream, sliding running jumping everywhere. Sweat was literally dripping off me. So later, when we get home, I of course want to have a few. I also want to get laid. So I ask, "is there a chance or should I have my drinks?" "I don't see any reason why we can't." Awesome. Dinner, kids finally in bed, it's getting late. So I say I'm going to go shower. I do. It's now after 11. I have to be up at 645am for church. So I say goodnight, she follows me into the bedroom, "So what's the deal here? Are we fooling around?" "Uh no. It's late, I have to get up early and you never took a shower." (All offended) "I am NOT dirty." "We had sweat dripping off us in puddles. We spent 3 hours going crazy in there." "I do NOT stink." "Ok." So she's pissed and about as far away from me on the bed as she can get. Dead ass asleep.

254 211 199 Ashley Judd, I think it's cyclical about what every 45 days we discuss "creation".... nah she knows me... 1 Aug this year will be 19 yrs of marriage.... it all blurs.... the judge was drunk.... I went to work that night...we wound up in montreal it all blurs.... is a drunk Judge a reason for dissolution? Posted by: sven10077@sven10077 at May 25, 2013 11:33 PM (LRFds) In 3 weeks MrsCaniac and I celebrate number 20. After #19, you just wake up and realize that they have brainwashed you into thinking that 21 year old women aren't interested in men close to 50. It is in their DNA. Drunk Judge a reason of dissolution? Nope. Most Judges are idiots, so if one of them gets drunk, it raises the IQ level of the whole lot of them. BTW, MrsCaniac's parents will be celebrating their 60th anniversary next year. Guess who will be paying for a cruise for the whole lot? Yaaaah me. FML.

Posted by: CarolT at May 25, 2013 07:55 PM (z4WKX)

292 Yeah Hypo and Rochefort.  JN-25.  The Japanese were always lax about changing their keys.  Before Operation Hawaii they kept good EMCON.  First Air Fleet just kinda vanished from the air waves.  For Objective AF, the Japanese were as talkative as mag-pies.  And as confident, the four carriers carried extra planes for the Japanese naval air station they would set up on Midway.  One guy IIRC even told the post office to forward his mail to Midway before leaving Japan.  They were that cocky.

But Hypo in Hawaii was reading IJN encrypted radio traffic, JN-25.  They were cracking about 10% of each message.  This was no where near like Army and Navy were reading Purple before Pearl Harbor, Japan's diplomatic code had been thoroughly broken.  So acronyms like AF kept cropping up.  They went digging through their message piles, before computers; had to have a great memory and a good filing system to find stuff.  Finally they found a message from an Emily seaplane saying they were passing near AF.  Hypo looked at the maps, consulted known information on the range of the Emily four engine seaplane, known Japanese bases, and realized AF could only mean Midway.

Selling the idea that Japan was going to throw their entire Navy at taking two fly speck islands in the vastness of the Pacific to Nimitz took some doing.  But luckily Hypo had been pretty correct in reading the JN-25 tea leaves for Coral Sea so Nimitz gave Rochefort a chance to present his case.  Nimitz listened and was still hesitant, he needed more proof.

That is when inspiration struck.  Nimitz listened to what Rochefort proposed and gave the okay.  So Rochefort and Nimitz's intelligence officer sent a message via the trans-Pacific cable that had run before WWII from US to Hawaii to Midway to Wake and beyond ordering Midway to transmit in the clear their desalinization plant was broke.  Sending this order by cable meant there was no radio traffic to Midway to alert the Japanese that the Americans might suspect something.  So Midway sent a message via radio saying their desalinization plant was broke.  The Japanese picked it up and transmitted back to Japan that AF was running low on water.

Once Nimitz had that proof it became a fleet opposed invasion.  Which meant he could order the USAAF assets as he wanted.  COMINCH Admiral King and others worried it was another feint, but Nimitz stuck to his guns and set about getting what forces he could to Midway.  Though he did send Admiral Pye with the battleships along with the first US escort carrier Long Island to the West Coast.  While ordering Fletcher and Halsey to expedite return from the South Pacific now that Coral Sea was over.

296 Then there was the drop fix for the early Atari STs. The firmware ROM would wiggle its way out its socket due to heat expansion. This was especially a problem on the units that shipped without the final firmware and had to have it installed later. Factory installs would be lightly glued into the socket and stayed put.

If the machine wouldn't boot properly or kept trying to boot from floppy instead of the ROM, the fix was to pick it up about an inch and let drop onto the desk.

362 CBD and LIT, when I was waiting to shake hands with the Doolittle Raiders I talked with the son of USS Hornet's flight surgeon.  His father had this map of Hornet's sea cruise.  All marked with red lines and notes.  Hornet and Enterprise, after returning from the Doolittle Raid, were rushed south from Pearl Harbor in an attempt to join the Coral Sea battle.  They arrived too late, but on this map was noted a very important event that had direct impact on the Battle of Midway.

Right at this point deep in the South Pacific where Hornet's course radically changed by about 115 degrees was written in red 'Sighted by Jap plane.'  That sighting was relayed to Tokyo.  So the Japanese thought there would be no American carriers to face them at Midway.  Hence the main reason for the attack, to draw out and destroy the remaining American carriers in revenge for the Doolittle Raid endangering the Emperor and violating the homeland, seemed it would not happen.

But there were other failings by the Japanese to find out where the American carriers were.  There was a plan to refuel two flying boats from French Frigate Shoal and send them over Pearl Harbor on May 26th.  But because the US Navy knew the Japanese had used that location before to recon Pearl Harbor when they saw that mission in the JN-25 traffic for Midway, a US Navy seaplane tender was dispatched to French Frigate Shoal.

This lead to a delay in the other portion of Japan's attempt to get early warning of American carriers rushing from Pearl to meet the Midway invasion force.  Japanese submarines of the screening force were tasked to refuel the flying boats.  They spent two days waiting for the Americans to leave.  When the Americans stayed, the seaplane mission was called off and the submarines were ordered to screen the approaches between Hawaii and Midway.  But by the time they took their patrol stations, both Spruance and Fletcher had already passed them by for Point Luck.

Back when Dario was trying to run Cup, ESPN always made such a big deal about her being at the race like all the other wives. Funny thing was that she went out of her way to make sure that she was never around any of the other wives, even if that meant that Dario wasn't around the other racers. That is a big no-no in racing. The drivers spend a lot of time with each other because they need and have to trust the other drivers on the track. Their lives literally depend on it. So old Dario never got the respect of the other drivers in NASCAR because of it, and nobody would work with him on the plate tracks because they just didn't know him and how he would run a race. Sad because Dario could be a successful driver in NASCAR. I am still reserving judgement on Jeff Gordon's marriage because everyone knows that NASCAR arranged his first marriage to Brooke because Jeff is teh ghey.

446 Rubio is an enemy of the American Republic and pretty much everything that made the country great. Like Obama, Rubio wants to transform America, and in his case specifically into a third world craphole even worse than his ever more crap hole Miami. He is the prime mover of amnesty, which is shaping up to be Super Amnesty, it's main faceman and main spokesmouth and needs to be utterly destroyed. The Three Rubio Leg Clingers, Levin, Limbaugh and Hannity need to chose between their strange perverse loyalty to the anti-American Rubio and their own country. All three, who never seem to tire of congratulating themselves on what great Americans they are, and how much they are against amnesty, and who have gotten very rich from the listenership of people who do not want America to be Rubiomexinized and this is how they repay them and America. The longer they wait to join up in the war against the man who is making war on America, the more my utter contempt for them grows. For them to say they are against amnesty but Rubio is a good guy is comparable to someone saying he is against Communism but Stalin is a good guy, or they are against Nazism but Hitler is a good guy -  utterly absurd. Patton would have them all shot as deserters.

At least you're dealing with livebearers. Fish have several breeding strategies, and different species use different ones -- there's livebearers, which work like people and dogs where the sperm and egg combine inside the female; there's mouthbrooders, where sperm and egg combine in the female's mouth (yes, really); and then there's substrate spawners, where sperm and egg combine on a handy local surface. Substrate spawners can have literally thousands of fry.

495 DC, I am easing into weight lifting right now. I've always been a bit intimidated by the free weights. come back and chat with me in a couple of months' time when I've gotten more used to it and I've actually built a little bit of muscle. Okay? Posted by: chemjeff at May 26, 2013 12:54 AM (BBWjt) Don't be intimidated by it. And don't be intimidated by some of the serious weightlifters at the gym. Most understand that there are all levels of people weight training, and some may even give you some helpful hints. I played sports throughout high school and never lifted weights. This was back in the late 70's early 80's when weight training was starting to get big in high schools. Coaches always set up some kind of program for the team, but you could get out of it by playing other sports, so I did. 25 years after graduating HS, I decided to give it a shot. MrsCaniac is pretty happy with the results.

496 Gushie!!! How's Uncle Horse doing with his kitties?

Posted by: cthulhu at May 26, 2013 12:59 AM (T1005)

new batch of kittens. i have been trying to catch the Mother Of All Cats and i think i have her almost tame enough to catch and put in the Big Carier, since i cant get her to go in a trap (shes wise to the can of tuna in the humane trap.) So she dropped three little dilute gingers that we named Butterscotch Butterrum and Butterbeer. And then theres one calico we call Button.  Uncle horse is thrilled to have more babies to play with.  It kinda bummed him out when i took Cecil and Tatertot into the house. Two of his babies disappeared and he didnt get that it was to be neutered and have a safer life indoors.

Uncle horse is going back to work after a long lay up after almost being killed by those people who bought him. i think hes a little dismayed. he was downright snarky when i showed him the saddle. the going theorey is that he thought he was permanently retired, and not just laid up. But he looks really good. Fat and shiny and better developed than he was before i decided to sell him. this is gonna be a real good summer Coothie. I just know it.

If you go to a store and see "african cichlids" -- especially if they're in the genera pseudotropheus, melanochromis, labeotropheus, cynotilapia, or labidochromis (AKA "mbuna"), you can play with them. If you stay by a tank for a while, they'll all come out and look at you. If you put your hand over the left side of the tank, they'll all go to the left to see what you're doing. If you move your hand to the right, they'll all go to the right.

most of them are rescues. so their job is to be happy and get well. If they get well enough i train them to Joust and play medieval games and for mounted combat. Otherwise, they just hang out, play, run around in the big pen, and chase the big ball. we ride down trail with friends sometimes. its a pretty kick back life but i only take the worst of the worst. I lose very very few. I am a very bad loser.

its very satisfying to turn a rack of bones beautiful again. and even better to take a frightened animal and teach it confidence. But its a group effort, i work with a super vet, and one of my best friends is a super problem solving trainer. Shes more like a therapist and less like a horse breaker (I think NCRef to a pic of her ass.) Together we have a lot of fun out here.

546 Easy peasy. Buy big ass box of dates from Trader Joe's. Cut length wise, remove pit. Fill date with goat cheese, wrap with uncured nitrite/nitrate free bacon. I usually use a half slice per date. Place on rack over foil lined pan in 425 oven for about 25 minutes or until the bacon is crispy, turning once at about 15 minutes. The baking rack is key, otherwise the bacon sits in its own drippings and gets all soggy.

Hmm.....beyond liquid metal....

"But Johansen had not given out yet. Knowing that the Thing could surely overtake the Alert until steam was fully up, he resolved on a desperate chance; and, setting the engine for full speed, ran lightning-like on deck and reversed the wheel. There was a mighty eddying and foaming in the noisome brine, and as the steam mounted higher and higher the brave Norwegian drove his vessel head on against the pursuing jelly which rose above the unclean froth like the stern of a daemon galleon. The awful squid-head with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht, but johansen drove on relentlessly. There was a bursting as of an exploding bladder, a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish, a stench as of a thousand opened graves, and a sound that the chronicler could not put on paper. For an instant the ship was befouled by an acrid and blinding green cloud, and then there was only a venomous seething astern; where - God in heaven! - the scattered plasticity of that nameless sky-spawn was nebulously recombining in its hateful original form, whilst its distance widened every second as the Alert gained impetus from its mounting steam."

Long rambling Navy story, cause I'm in a bad mood and feel like complaining.

I was at 15 years, 5 to go to retirement.  Plan was to do a 1-year AFG deployment, start at 15.5, add in training, maybe extend a couple of months.  Come back with 3 years - one PCS to some flying job, finish up doing something fun.  They owe me after the last few years.  Anyway, got penciled in for three different deployments, they all got cancelled for lack of funding/drawdown.

Detailer suggested AFPAK Hands.  Described it as 1 year deployed, 1 year in DC, another year deployed.  If I went right then, I would have 2 years left, which is the minimum for that PCS to flying that I wanted.  He said the only other option would be staff in Bahrain, or some non-flying ship job.  I took the APH job.

Orders showed up, but instead of 36 months, they were 45 months.  Dude had left out the training - 1-2 months combat, ~4 months language, all separate from the actual job.  If I do the full thing, I will end it with 15 months to go to retirement, and they won't move me for less than 24.  So I'll be stuck in DC, where there are no flying jobs, and I'll get some shitty stash job at the Pentagon or something.

This deployment is 10 months.  I am asking to go directly to training in January, which would put me back over here around June next year.  Supposed to be a 12 month tour, but if I can get it down to 10, I will actually have my 24 months to go to get that PCS.  Lot of if in that plan, and I'm sure something will go wrong.

Either way, I retire 1 May 17.  1436 days, not that anybody is counting.  At least I'll have  a different signature on my paperwork  than the current "CiC."

I bought the beer, took it over to him, and said " Mr. Kenny, Its Memorial Day weekend, and I just wanted to raise a glass with you in salute to all of the men who never made it back from serving our country". We solemnly toasted the honored dead. A few minutes later he came over to me and said "Man, Dave, you're a hell of a guy. Thank you." "No sir, thank you" I replied. I was personally gratified, but it irks me that that simple thing I did should be seen as cause for gratitude. I should have been the dozenth guy to thank Mr. Kenny, not the unusual one. Stupid little thing, but it bothers me that It wasn't a stupid little thing, for him it was unusual.

Posted by: Elizabethe on the phone at May 26, 2013 01:51 AM (qPCAa)

if you are not too proud to start out with an old quiet horse and take lessons and really apply yourself you can learn quite late in life. If you want to ride to compete at op levels it helps to start when you are 4 and live with your coaches like i did.

but that life makes you not particularly useful for much else. So it kinda good you grew up and learned how to do something else with your life. What i did is great but makes it hard for me to be employed in any but a very narrow way. Though i am great for keeping an infect hoof from falling off and i know just what to do for many many kinds of sick horses and bad wounds. So i guess after an EMP explosion, i will be quite in demand. Right now my skills are just kind of an oddity.

Yay! The mouse puts 'em away, again!

There's a running gag in my family about "Dead Baby Syndrome", typically after fireworks when a bunch of the park clears out. Parents stagger back to their cars with kids draped over their shoulders, or half hanging-out of strollers, or in some sort of carrier....and the kids have been run full out, past the point of normal exhaustion. The kids appear totally lifeless, as if they'd just leave a smear if they dragged on the ground until their skin wore through and never even twitch.

And the funny thing is that the horrible imagery and awful nickname is actually talking about something supremely good. Running past one's normal experiences to the point where one loses the tether to the everyday is very Zen. Disneyland is exquisitely designed to drive youngsters into full acceptance of a cascade of "the Now".....after which, they conk out and you drive 'em home.

i am gonna be staying in the castro in a B and B that "caters to the Discriminating LGBT community" sister made the arrangements for  grim and i to stay there for her wedding and mom and i are gonna test it out ahead of time to be sure Grimmy and daddy dont freak out if its too weird for them. Looks nicely appointed and artsy. I think they will be fine. After his deployments, i think Grim's only requirement is "clean." And his idea of clean means a toilet with a seat not a bucket and sheets only slept on by him or one of his team.

but Bebe gave mom the idea she needed to take me with her next time she sees sissy, so i see no reason why i shouldnt make the most of the opportunity and see you and maybe coothie too if i can manage while i am up there.

Right over the hill from the Bay Area Proper. Oh, and don't run low on gas in Pleasanton. There are inexplicably huge sections of main streets there absolutely bereft of gas stations. It's bizarre.

668 Pleasanton is bland but close to interesting things. Frisco (they hate that word) is worth seeing, just don't linger. Even most of the freaks there are harmless, though some contagious and many offensive. There are a shit-ton of museums, artsy things, interesting places, unique stores and businesses, etc. There is still a business climate there and LA for much the same reason as there is in DC - bleeding everywhere else dry. The natural resources in CA are so amazing that they kept a parasite state running long enough to set a world record, I think. Like CA, there are parts of SF I would be quite comfortable in if it weren't for the re-Nazification of the law there.

We lived in Fairfax, same exit as NRA HQ.  Work was DLI in Arlington, right across the street from Rosslyn metro.  Sometimes went to the Pentagon, sometimes Navy Yard.

If I get what I'm asking for, I'll be there about 4 months for language.  Actually considering a little campground up in rural Maryland.  About 10 min from a metro station, and 1/3 of BAH.  Might as well make some money while I'm there.

681 The thing that many fail to realize if they're not actually in California is how close things are....that you assume are far apart, and how far apart things are....that you assume are close. South Central LA is only 12 miles from Beverly Hills; Compton is 13 miles from Manhattan Beach; East LA is only 10 miles from Pasadena.....but, yet, Malibu to Disneyland is over 50 miles; SF is almost 400 miles from LA; and you can travel over 750 miles in one direction (e.g. San Diego to Yreka) and never leave the state.

685 Best ever Civil War era fort -- The Union's Ft. Jefferson on Dry Tortuga key in the FL keys.  You can only get to it by plane or boat.

Its a graphic demonstration that government stupidity and waste goes back a very long way.

It was nominally built to control the South's access to the port of New Orleans, but to do that it would have had to been equipped with dozens of warships...which it wasn't.

The "clever" southerners soon figured out that a ship could simply drive around the fort out of range of its guns and plied their trade at NOLA unmolested.

The fort never fired a single shot in anger during the war and its garrison were reduced to a starving and spottily supplied pathetic existence.  At some point the foundation shifted (it was just built on sand, they didn't go down to the coral) and the integral rain water collection system that fed into masonry cisterns cracked and all the fresh water leaked out.

The 12' thick brick walls were constructed from red Murphy bricks shipped all the way from the north east.

In its day it was a boondoggle of staggering proportion.

702 In its day it was a boondoggle of staggering proportion. In its day? The restoration boondoggle continues unabated: The enabling legislation of Dry Tortugas National Park mandates that the National Park Service "protect, stabilize, restore, and interpret Fort Jefferson, an outstanding example of nineteenth century masonry fortification" for future generations. Protecting and stabilizing this impressive fort is complicated by its location near the Florida Keys where regular exposure to salt, heat, destructive weather, and water are a constant threat to the masonry construction of the fortification. A walk around the moat today shows where large sections of the fort walls have collapsed into the moat, largely caused by rusting of the historic totten shutter system. Dry Tortugas National Park has initiated a multi-phased, multi-year preservation project to stabilize Fort Jefferson. The scope of this project is to carefully remove the existing brick surrounding the embrasure (cannon) openings on the lower level in order to gain access to the original iron elements. Bricks will be documented, cleaned, and set aside for reuse. In 2008, the park began Phase II of this project that will go through 2011. This phase will address two fronts with the complete removal of all original iron elements and wall rebuilding and stabilization. Crews will remove the rusted iron elements from the original Totten shutters and stabilize the exterior walls of Fort Jefferson by rebuilding the scarp (fort) wall. Concrete made of local sand and coral - just as used in the original construction - and historic bricks salvaged during demolition are being used to preserve the historic appearance of the walls. A good example of the "finished product" can be seen on a walk about halfway around the moat, where the wall has been restored and the replica Totten shutters have been installed. So, after God knows how many millions of dollars later, replica shutters have been installed, and if you stand in the right place at the right angle during the right time of day you can see some of the "finished product" where a brick wall has been restored.

705 689 Corona is considered low life piss water down in Mexico. Its what the poverty stricken campesinos buy. Posted by: @PurpAv at May 26, 2013 03:39 AM (/gHaE) I don't like Corona either. But around here it actually costs more than what I usually drink (Yuengling's Chesterfield Ale). Several years ago I had my roof replaced. The actual work was done by five Mexicans who were probably illegal. But those guys worked their asses off all day long, and as they were finishing up I went out and bought them a case of Corona. Shit, I didn't mean to insult them.

CarolT, may everything turn out OK.

Thank you Gnu Breed.

I think everything is in God's hands, if He wants him to walk he will.  I had to be my late mother's legal guardian because she had Alzheimer's.  I weigh  less than 100 pounds.  I can scare the hell out of nurses and others that did something wrong.  I might have to go to Maine to get him back to Massachusetts. We have world class doctors here.  I wish I thought of this last weekend but I'm going to do what I did for my mother for my brother.

I can't go to Maine tomorrow because it's Memorial Day and he's in a new rehab, they moved him Friday.  I want him transferred to MA, preferably Spaulding rehab in Boston.  I'm going to call his case worker Tuesday and tell her that's what we want.  I can be a bully and will do so if they don't cooperate with me.  Paul would not have had the infections for so long if he was in a Boston hospital.

I like Newton Wellesley Hospital. That's where I go for all my medical issues.  I have an appointment Thursday and will ask my doctor for help. She has a lot of clout at that hospital.

711 The forts at San Francisco and Dry Tortugas were part of the Third System of seacoast fortifications of the United States.  Instead of a boondoggle, they were an essential part of our defense strategy and reflected American foreign policy as well.  Before the Civil War, they represented probably the largest expenditure by the federal government.

In out national anthem we sing about how Fort McHenry defended Baltimore from a British invasion.  Washington DC which did not have any defensive forts was burned to the ground.  Afterwords, a series of forts were built to defend American ports on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.  San Francisco was the only third system fort built on the west coast.

The forts were very effective against sailing ships armed with smooth bore cannons.  They protected the country without requiring a large standing army or a large and powerful navy.  This was a cost effective way of implementing the US foreign policy of "Don't fuck with us and we will not even bother to build the capability to fuck with anybody else."

By the time of the Civil War, the forts were becoming obsolete.  They could destroy sailing ships but steam ships could race past them with a pretty good chance of survival.  The thick brick walls could stand up against solid spherical canon balls shot by smooth bore cannons but broke down when hit by elongated projectiles fired by rifled artillery whether the projectiles were solid shot or exploding shells.

In the late 1880s through World War I, the US built the Endicott system seacoast forts with large breech loading rifled cannons firing armor piercing exploding shells that could sink the battleships of the time.  The development of aircraft made these fortifications much less effective and during WW II, most of the guns were dismounted and melted down as scrap steel for the war effort.
