Overnight Open Thread (25 Oct 2013)
— CDR M

Thank God it's Friday!

A lot of death spirals in the news lately. Add this one to your list. More welfare recipients than workers in the U.S. Firings

So in an administration that has had scandal after scandal (IRS, Fast and Furious, Solyndra, Benghazi, Snowden, DoJ, etc.), the only two people fired so far is an Obamacare operator and a national security aide. Their crimes? Telling the truth on Obamacare and speaking ill of Valerie Jarret.

Beer Stuff

This dude is pretty hard core. After safely directing everyone else including children to vacate the burning building, this man reenters his house to save his beer. Rescuin' is thirsty duty man.

After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man who walks with a cane went back in the burning house to retrieve something he left behind.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," said Walter Serpit, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."

Serpit managed to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.

Maybe he went back into the fire because it was 'Snake Venom', the world's strongest beer.

Physics buzz: The physics is clear on foamy beer. This is why you immediately drink half your beer when you get it so when that moron comes up to you and taps your bottle, you're good to go.

The initial tap to the bottle sends a shock wave through the glass to the bottleÂ’s bottom. The energy from the wave transfers to the beer inside sending a second shock wave up toward the beerÂ’s surface. It then bounces back again and keeps moving back and forth through the liquid until its energy dissipates.

The wave motion and changing pressure knocks free tiny gas pockets trapped inside microscopic imperfections in the glass bottle. The pockets implode and create clouds of smaller bubbles from the dissolved carbon dioxide in the beer. Though these bubbles can quickly grow up to three times larger than their original size, that alone is not what makes the bottle overflow with foam.

Individual plumes of bubbles float up through the beer, building up speed as they get bigger, until they burst out of the bottleÂ’s top in a shower of foam.

Real time map showing real time distributed denial of service attacks. Is that healthcare.org in D.C.?

Car Wash

I'm getting real tired of these environmentalists. These cheerleaders couldn't have a car wash because of the environment.

105  I started putting in a pool this week and I didn't inform them. Last time I informed them when I put in a fence, they never responded to my request so I figured why bother. Well they responded with a cease and desist. Hole was already excavated, walls up and concrete footings poured. I think I know what rat bastard raised a stink too. Payback is gonna be a bitch. Once I get approval for my already dug pool.

109 Friend of mine has had his house longer than there was an HOA, he has rabbits in his backyard. They came around and told him that he couldn't have them and of course, being who he is, he gave them holy hell for it back and forth for the next 3 or 4 months before a judge finally told them that he wasn't in the HOA and they had no jurisdiction over his property (he could have just told them that but he's kind of an argumentative bastard).

So next they came around and tried to get his rabbits seized because they're livestock and the area isn't zoned agricultural. He told the county they were pets. The county told them to knock it off.

Finally they offered to buy the rabbits (apparently one of the HOA queen bees was his neighbor and really hated those rabbits). He quoted them a price of 300K. They were astounded he wanted so much for the rabbits. He said "Rabbits hell, that will buy you the whole place and then you can shove those rabbits up your ass."

Far as I know they haven't bothered him since.

Sometimes a little subtlety just totally destroys a joke, and I'm sorry for that.
Let me be more blunt, and use larger capital letters maybe. There is no doubt about it. Mapmakers, politicians, the UN, earth scientists, all agree: Mexico is part of North America. I don't care what their "context" is. They're deliberately ignorant.

Since deliberate ignorance is not a trait of Mexicans I've met, I'm left with the impression that this particular distortion was promulgated not by Mexicans, but by One of Our Boys. That straightforward enough for you Joe? "Context." Rube.

One day the guy is over here for something and my husband, trying to keep me from getting any more dogs, says to him, "I read in the HOA you can't have more than two dogs, right" Guy says to him, "What? No...house down the street has like 6. Nobody cares." HA! says I. Husband says, "Damnit!" Guy looks at my husband and says, "Dude, you should have told me why you were saying that." I win.

205 "North America" to refer to just US+Canada was useful since America and Canada share a common culture and language. Silly example, but in pro wrestling there is a North American style. Which is distinct from the Mexican or Japanese style. There have been a bunch of big Canadian stars in WWE - Bret Hart, Jericho, Edge, etc. And those guys could learn their craft in Calgary or Montreal or Toronto ... and immediately start working in NY or Texas or Florida. Whereas Mexican wrestlers typically had a difficult time adapting to the "North American" style. Most of the "Mexican" stars in WWE history have actually been Mex-Americans born in Texas or Cali.

215 HOA'sÂ….. we got a citation for having our motorhome parked in our driveway. It was there for less than 5 hours for us to unload after a trip. The deed restrictions allow you to park for up to 48 hours at a time. The excuse was the person who drives through looking for violations has no idea how long it was parked there, just saw it, took photos, and sent out a letter of our "violation" without finding out if it was really an actual violation. Great job!!! They removed it from our record, along with a few other NOT violations through the years. They are just lazy and don't follow up.

284 256 I have an ethics question for the horde. I own a company that does a lot of subcontracting. I am now doing work for a company that I believe is deliberately over-billing its customers. The checks keep clearing. So what is my moral culpability?

Posted by: cm9000 at October 25, 2013 11:16 PM (3qZbZ)

What kind of overbilling are you talking about? If it's taking $2000 of your work and billing it for $3000, that may be totally ethical and moral -- especially if the main contract required a $5M insurance policy, a labor-intensive bid process, and putting up with the client.

If, on the other hand, he's billing for milestones not met.....you can do a lot in a very low-key way. Like "oh, the wiring's done at the main building? That was fast, it wasn't even started Wednesday."

October 25, Leyte Gulf day (to some).  Amazing battle, esp. of course the performance of the out-gunned escorts on Day Two.  One can only imagine the sort of movie that could be made out a straight recounting of the story, so packed with amazing valor, color, and action.  Just take Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors by Hornfischer and screen-play it.

On Day One, the night before the big battle, there was of course the famous last major big-gun surface engagement in history, down south at Surigao Strait.  A few years back I did a Vets' History Project/Lib. of Congress interview with Bobby Smith, who was junior radar tech on the USS West Virginia.  He was off-watch when the West Virginia's radar detected the Japanese column steaming north.  He was woken and told to get to the radar shack, and got outside just in time to be assaulted with the concussion of the main battery's first salvo.  His ship fired the first shots of the main battle (the Japanese column had already been beset by US subs, PT boats, and smaller ships on its way up the Strait).

On another topic, someone up above joked about One Scotch One Whiskey One Beer at a mosque Top 20 song.  So about 20 years ago I'm with some friends, we're at the Cold Springs Tavern in the mountains northeast of Santa Barbara after a day of wine tasting out in Santa Ynez valley.  We're sitting by the big open fireplace (it's cool, December).  Far end of the room (place was an historic stagecoach stop) was a stool and a microphone.  We noticed some guy in snakeskin motorcycle clothes near his bike as we came in (place was a big destination for the weekend Harley crowd).

So we're enjoying the fire and our beers and over at the microphone somebody starts strumming a guitar and singing One Scotch One Whiskey One Beer.  Someone (not me), after a minute or two, says "that sounds a lot like Thorogood himself".  So we turn around, and realize the guy in the odd bike get-up WAS George Thorogood.

I asked her if he still has pneumonia, urinary tract injections, yes he does. I left for her to see him. They wanted to give him a shower & I asked them to please wait five minutes & then go ahead or he would have kept trying to convince me stay. I didn't have any clean underthings , & had been wearing same pair of jeans since Wednesday . It took 2 hours & 44 minutes to get home from Maine General Hospital. Paul wanted me. To get him another cup of coffee & I went to get it & asked Ann, case worker while in hospital, if any of places in MA had responded. The two best ones near me are full with long waiting lists. Paul also had her look near where his kids live, 40 miles away from here. One had calle d to say they won't accept Medicaid. I did a load of laundry after unpacked & turned heat up. Yes, Yip, that battle and a straight re-telling would be better than any fiction - and a cinch to do well in this day of CGI (the animation technology, not the Canadian cyber-catastrophe contractor!!).

The US sailors, at first puzzled by the colorful spouts of water as the Japanese shells (color-coded by ship for spotting purposes) erupted around them, thinking it was some sort of display.  The baffled Japanese officers, trying to figure out why the US aircraft were attacking with smoke flares and small fragmentation ordnance (because they were armed for ground support missions ashore!).  The ferocious heroism of the Sammy B and the Johnston and the Hoel - so tremendous that the Japanese officers lined the rail of their ships to salute the remains of these little ships after they were vanquished.   Hornfischer's book, IMHO, is one of the best WWII histories there is - a masterful recounting of an amazing story.

My oldest best friend's dad was ferried out to the Pacific (he was an Army L-4 pilot) on the USS Gambier Bay - I recommended the Hornfischer book to him thanks to that connection and he raves about it to this day.  (He had a short war - was nearly shot down by our own fleet at Saipan on day two or three, emergency landed at an airfield ashore, that was where there was a gigantic ammo dump explosion that night - some version of this event is in some fairly recent WWII movie I cannot recall - and received a concussion that kept him grounded the rest of the war ..... doing personnel work in New Caledonia, which was, he says, as nice at McHale's Navy made it sound!)

A good friend (same guy I was with at the Cold Spring Tavern anecdote, above) had a refrigerator magnet on his fridge years back - "St Lo Survivor's Association".  I stunned my buddy by asking, "so (his step-father) was on the St Lo?".  No one else he knew even knew what the St Lo was, of course, or why it would have a "Survivor's Association".  Turns out his step-dad had been in the air when the kamikazes hit, and like others had to ditch his plane elsewhere.  He did so right along the beach on Samar island, smart move.

385 Jean, the Japs had no air support by then...  It was the last best surface battle and they intended to sink the invasion fleet and they nearly did it.  If not for the rain squalls than helped to hide our retreating Jeep Carriers and the manic fight that that fighters put up, it could have been a decisive defeat for us.   Providence and good luck and hard fighting ruled the battle.

Why it's not been made a movie is beyond me.

387 Carol,

When my grandfather was in his final illness, there was much hemming and hawing and miscommunication until I finally just said, "screw it" that afternoon and got on the first available plane (a redeye) to fly across the country to Columbus, OH. I rented a car, booted up the computer, and discovered that he could be in one of two hospitals in Parkersburg, WV -- so I drove to the nearest. It turned out to be the one he was in, and I was there for about a half-hour when my grandmother called the ICU to say that she'd be late for visiting hours.....because she was in the ER.

I tell people all the time that is their responsibility to make "taking care of their health" their highest priority. To a lot of people, it initially sounds selfish -- but it really isn't. If you are not well, how can you be there for others? It wouldn't gain you anything to end-up hospitalized, yourself -- because not only couldn't you help Paul, but he'd feel terrible that he couldn't help you.

That's not to say that you should cast people aside for your comfort, or deny yourself nothing -- but when you are in the sort of situation you face now, you absolutely need to dial it back and pace yourself carefully. You did a good thing by going up to see Paul, and it's good that you're home safe.

Jean, I think the whole "Sho Go" operation (I think that's what it was called) by Japan was, like most things done in the Pacific from Saipan onwards, a desperation move to slow/punish the US advance.  In hopes of somehow making a deal, or at least avoiding unconditional surrender.  Doubt they expected they could prevent the liberation of the Philippines in general - but for their war aims at that point delaying it or raising the cost was sufficient, and rational.

The northern and southern aspects of the operation were explicitly sacrificial, to draw off/distract the US forces (spectacularly successful in the case of Ozawa's empty carriers suckering Halsey's TF 7 so the Center Force could get to the invasion beaches and savage the "soft" invasion fleet.

The Japanese commander, VAdm Kurita, obviously fucked up - he was essentially on a suicide mission, so turning back due to resistance made no sense.  Yet that's what he did when convinced by the ferocity of the valiant defenders at Leyte that they must be backed by a US main force (not so, of course, Halsey was off chasing rabbits to the north).  I've always thought Kurita's failure was one of the worst for Japan in WWII.  Their commanders didn't make a lot of mistakes of consequence, but Kurita's decision to withdraw seems to me a gigantic blunder.

I think that starting with Saipan (The Marianas Turkey Shoot) Japan's naval command pretty much knew their operations would be some form of suicide mission - they were completely outclassed and by a greater margin every month as more/better US ships planes and personnel poured into the fight.

North and South America have their own tectonic plates that are active, so they really are "separate" in that regard. The Eurasian plate, however, seems to have fused at the Urals (originally where the Laurussian supercontinent had mashed with the continent of Kazakhstania, 250 million years ago).

Yip and Jean and others, speaking of Hornfischer, I can also enthusiastically recommend a more recent book of his, Neptune's Inferno, about the Guadalcanal naval battles.  Fantastic as well.

Again, the ..... dunno, sheer balls and badassery, to use current terminology, of these WWII naval engagements are staggering.  Learned a lot from Neptune's Inferno, especially how unprepared the USN was to fight the Japanese at that early stage, and how good the IJN was.

As with "Last Stand", there are memorable humorous anecdotes amid the unimaginably intense violence.  My favorite, a junior radar officer in the CIC of the flagship for one of the many night cruiser battles, who finally exclaims as the US column continues to hold its fire and draws incredibly close to the (blind, radar-less) Japanese column - "what are we going to do, board them??".

Yip - that's funny about emailing Hornfischer - several times since Last Stand, and then Inferno, I've thought about emailing him just to thank him for the fantastic job he did on those two books, and for the service he thereby rendered to the country and to the men involved.  Now that you say he's receptive, maybe I finally will.

But I'm not close to Austin.  However, San Diego has not one but TWO monuments to the Leyte Gulf battle - one up on Fort Rosecrans cemetery and a newer one right next to the USS Midway carrier museum.  Maybe when I make my long-anticipated pilgrimage to the Pacific War museum in Fredericksburg (which will be my first time in Texas) I can visit Austin as well (understood they are far apart).

Those mentioning the lack of historic knowledge among the newer generations ....... please don't get me started.  On a few occasions speaking to high school or even college classes I've played around by asking if anyone knew what Nimitz Blvd.  or Midway Drive were named after ..... guess the reaction.  Though even worse was my friend's college foreign policy class, where the terms "nuclear weapon" and "Soviet Union" elicited blank wondering stares from a significant number of students (!!!!!).

Fucker was FAST - and have to admire the balls of the IJN for using such a dangerous propulsion approach to get that performance.  I think I've seen examples of these Type-?? torpedoes at the Navy Yard in DC and and the old IJN naval academy at Eta Jima near Kure, Japan.

But I've never understood how they aimed a torpedo at a target miles away that was moving - and of course could change speed or course several times in the period the torpedo was under way - and achieve such success.  I understand some times they were volleys or salvos, but most of the time it seems they actually aimed.

443 But I've never understood how they aimed a torpedo at a target miles away that was moving - and of course could change speed or course several times in the period the torpedo was under way - and achieve such success. I understand some times they were volleys or salvos, but most of the time it seems they actually aimed.

Posted by: non-purist at October 26, 2013 01:01 AM (afQnV)

I don't want to get too technical, but they didn't aim individual torpedoes.  They fired a spread which covered as broad an arc of the target's potential maneuvering solutions as possible.  That way, no matter how quickly they say you launch, and how quickly they maneuvered, you had a good chance to hit.  Turning directly into (or away from) the path of the torpedo tracks (once observed) reduced the arc of interception to the minimum possible, but many variable weather and visibility constraints frequenty made that less effective than the target would prefer.

Non Purist,

Austin to Fredricksburg is a very nice drive through wine country (!yes!) in what we call the Hill Country.  Very popular for a bike ride.  Luckenbach, Texas is nearby too if you ever heard the old Waylon Jennings song.   Worth a visit for live music and beer under the trees.  Fredricksburg is a restored old German town, lots of hotels and shops, restaurants, things to do, etc.  You will have a blast and the museum had a recent overhaul.  It is hot in the summertime though.  Everything is air conditioned.  Enchanted Rock is nearby Fredricksburg, a nice walk up to where Ranger Capt. Jack Hays held off the Comanches with the new Patterson Colt five-shooters.  Walker Colt was the first six-shooter.

HTL, thanks - then I guess, in fact, my thinking was correct - spreads were fired (I used the terms volley and salvo) more than individual torpedoes were targeted against individual targets.  Helps explain things.

460 Mr Dave, thanks - I was aware that part of Texas was particularly nice, and looked forward to the visit in general.  And being a wino who loves wine travel, I have no trouble imagining wines worth trying being produced in that area (mmmm, just finished a jar of fantastic apple-butter BBQ sauce made in Fredericksburg not long ago, so the non-historic charms of that area already figure in my thinking).  Appreciate the Colt references, but as I hail from a virtually "shall-NOT issue" county of the People's Republic of Commiefornia (as some internet gun nuts like to call it) and thus have zero chance of getting a permit, I won't be able to carry my rare Colt snubbie when I visit .....

Yip - thanks for that gracious offer - the Texas trip was not on the near-term calendar but I will factor in your idea when it gets closer.  Would love to meet some of our "little friends in a box" on a trip.

And yes, I also did not appreciate the importance of surface-ship torpedo warfare.  I believe the Japanese achieved the highest level of the art in WWII, though it was a factor in WWI-era naval engagements also.  My flawed memory seems to recall one of the annexes from Neptune's Inferno showing how significant torpedo attacks were in the losses inflicted on the USN around Guadalcanal.  The Long Lance and Japanese proficiency in torpedo warfare, I believe, had a great impact on how the USN went about its business after lessons were learned the hard way.

For a cool read check out the Wikipedia entry on the Long Lance - fascinating story.

474 Of course, they need to get busy on killing older people sooner than later. There is fear that medical advances will allow them to hang a round a lot longer than nature intended. This is a concern not because of population or cost but rather because too many of these people have the wrong memories. Like what the Soviet Union was and why it was the enemy of all free peoples.

Some ancient Marxist true believer? They'll keep him around forever and give him a tenured position at a school teaching a nonsense subject, just so he can influence the kids.

483 Kbdabear..    I appreciate what you are saying but in Last Stand , I found out that both the Japs and us used torpedoes as a PRIMARY weapon in screen destroyers.  I never knew that before.  The Japs had vastly superior ordinance and expertise but we learned quickly  and radar overtook their advantage once our naval officer corps learned to trust it.  Fascinating looking back though.  The naval aviation side of the equation is equally galling as we dealt with the dearth of poor design and tactics until finally figuring it out at great cost of lives.

I thought the goal of civil rights leaders like MLK was a color blind society. These yayhoos feel like they were so discriminated against by getting into Princeton sothey need their own separate alumni group? Posted by: The Farmer How quickly everyone forgets! Michelle Obama's entire Princeton career was based on insulting and abusing the white liberals who admitted her: http://tinyurl.com/n7466ly Michelle Obama’s 1985 senior thesis: “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community” Excerpt #1: "My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my ‘Blackness’ than ever before. I have found that at Princeton no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my White professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don’t belong.” “These experiences have made it apparent to me that the path I have chosen to follow by attending Princeton will likely lead to my further intergration and/or assimilation into a White cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant. This realization has presently, made my goals to actively utilize my resources to benefit the Black community more desirable.” “Predominately white universities like Princeton are socially and academically designed to cater to the needs of the white students comprising the bulk of their enrollments.” “…It is conceivable that my four years of exposure to a predominantly White, Ivy League university has instilled within me certain conservative values. For example, as I enter my final year at Princeton, I find myself striving for many of the same goals as my White classmates — acceptance to a prestigious graduate school or a high-paying position in a successful corporation.” “Regardless of the circumstances underwhich I interact with Whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be Black first and a student second.” Excerpt #2: In the final pages of the thesis, Michelle bemoans the integration of successful African-Americans into “White culture,” and sympathizes with the separatist position — that blacks and whites should maintain separate group identities: These excerpts are from the final 14 pages of Michelle Obama’s thesis: “However, with the increasing integration of Blacks into the mainstream society, many ‘integrated Blacks’ have lost touch with the Black culture in their attempts to become adjusted and comfortable in their new culture–the White culture. Some of these Blacks are no longer able to enjoy the qualities which make Black culture so unique or are unable to openly share their culture with other Blacks because they have become so far removed from these experiences and, in some instances, ashamed of them as a result of their integration.” “My speculation for this finding is based on the possibility that a separationist is more likely to have a realistic impression of the plight of the Black lower class because of the likelihood that a separationist is more closely associated with the Black lower class than are integrationist. By actually working with the Black lower class or within their communities as a result of their ideologies, a separationist may better understand the desparation of their situation and feel more hopeless about a resolution as opposed to an integrationist who is ignorant to their plight.” “I wondered whether or not my education at Princeton would affect my identification with the Black community. I hoped that these findings would help me conclude that despite the high degree of identification with Whites as a result of the educational and occupational path that Black Princeton alumni follow, the alumni would still maintain a certain level of identification with the Black community. However, these findings do not support this possibility.” Michelle herself defines her position as a "separationist," which of course is euphemism for "segregationist." 498 Oddly enough, no. She is being entirely judged by the content of her character. That is why she is so troubled and no title of nobility can solve that problem for her. She might finally be proud of her country, but she will live and die without ever experiencing being truly proud of herself.

We're looking at different things. I was saying that MO's writings, such as "I will always be Black first and a student second", were directly antithetical to the idea that "they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". You (in my understanding) are are referring to the fact that she has experienced every advantage in life (Princeton/Harvard, law degree, sinecure positions) and yet is so petty and hateful that she constantly evinces bitterness and resentment toward a nation that has given her so much.

yup.  classic case of no self worth lashing out at others because of what is lacking within themselves.  oddly enough, MLK's dream really turned out to be a curse to those who can accurately judge themselves for their own lack of character.

504 Things are getting ugly out there. Just today I witnessed a scary racial incident, in a city in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here's a blow-by-blow description of what happened: Supermarket parking lot. Cadillac drives the wrong way up a one-way aisle, backs up at an awkward angle into a disabled parking spot, not even close to staying within the lines. Driver, after a minute of rummaging, finds disabled placard and hangs it from the rear-view mirror. Driver gets out: She is a middle-aged black woman, not visibly disabled in anyway. With a self-satisfied smile, walks with no limp toward the supermarket front door. A passenger remains in the car. A parking lot attendant, who happened to be a black man, shakes his head in disgust as he approaches the car. He says to a passing shopper pushing a cart to a nearby car, "She breakin' all the rules. She can't stay parked like that." The passerby, who happened to be a white woman, added, "And she's not even disabled!" At this point, the passenger who had remained in the car -- a young black woman, in her early 20s -- leaned out the window and started screaming at the parking lot attendant: "You talkin' shit about my momma??!????!!! What'd you say to that white bitch about my momma???" Attendant: "Ma'am, you can't drive backwards up the aisles, and you can't park sideways in the disabled spot--" Daughter, now leaping out of the car (proving she's not disabled either) and charging toward the attendant: "Nuh uh! No way! You ain't bad-mouthing my momma to no white motherfucker! Shut your mouth! What'd she she say about my momma???" White woman passerby: [Look of fear on her face as she pushes her full cart away as fast as she can.] Attendant [losing his cool]: "I didn't say shit about your damn momma. Get this car out of my lot!" Daughter: "You in trouble now. Oh yeah. I'm gonna get you fired for backtalkin' to me! My momma disabled and she got the card to prove it! Who your manager?" Attendant: "I'll go get him right now. Then you'll see what happens." Daughter: "Is he white too? You gonna talk shit about my momma to all these white motherfuckers? You a fuckin' traitor." Attendant: [Jogs away to get manager.] Daughter [addressing all the other shoppers who have turned their heads to look at the hubbub]: "Don't you look at me, white bitches! This store racist!" [Gets back in car and continues to rant.] Attendant returns with manager, who is neither white nor black, but Asian. They lean in the window and have an argument with daughter, inaudible to me. At this point, the non-disabled mother returns from the store (not even carrying anything -- I think the daughter said at one point she just wanted to use the toilet) and gets back in the car. After a short further argument with the Asian manager, the mother starts the car and peals out, swerving wildly and nearly missing several pedestrians and parked cars, and screeches off into passing traffic, yelling racial epithets out the window. Attendant and manager laugh and shake their heads and walk back into store, presumably to file some kind of report. I report, you decide. Assessment?

Posted by: Arbalest at October 26, 2013 03:11 AM (FlRtG)

I didn't start getting significant facial hair until after I graduated from college (at the age of 20), and I soon discovered that -- while I have uncomfortably long eyebrows, and can practically braid the hair on my forearms -- attempting to grow a beard [even a goatee] made me look like the unfortunate victim of radiation sickness. It's light, at best, and very patchy. So, neither has a goatee.

I am, however, sportin' a 'stache at present....which my sister was kind enough to mention while we were up there: "wait, did you have that yesterday?"

I went out on a date tonight, arranged by a friend of mine - and my date started ripping on the GOP, the Tea Party and praising King Putt to the skies. He said America should be transformed because it's an evil country.

It's one thing to read some troll say that online and another thing to hear it from an ass  who is right across the table from you. His fettucine alfredo nearly ended up in his face.

I asked to be taken home and - no goodnight kiss, although he tried. I'd rather kiss a turd.

I'm still so pissed, I can't fall asleep. I envy those who are so happily married they never have to date again.

Well, zombie, since you and I share a common turf, all I have to say is that it's an entirely typical slice of daily life in the SF Bay Area. You should write it up for your gig at PJ Media.

I was going to say that the absolutely massive abuse of handicapped parking placards is something that crosses all racial boundaries here. Although actually, come to think of it, I have yet to personally witness anyone Hispanic gaming the system with a blue mirror hanger. Not once. I'm sure they exist, but I haven't seen it myself.

Everyone else, you bet. Seen it personally and repeatedly. They pop into the handicapped spot and cruise off on foot quite spryly with absolutely no sign of any disability whatsoever. TONS of Asians in SF proper. Likewise white dot-com yuppies and white hipster douchebags. And as you noted, blacks, especially in the East Bay.

I figure that there must be multiple angles being worked here. Crooked doctors in certain ethnic communities. Clean doctors being taken in by fake disability claims. "Market-based" sharing arrangements for legit placards. And of course outright fakes.

(I know that parking enforcement are supposed to cross-verify the blue hanger versus the license plate, but I've never once seen that actually be done. The meter cart operators just see the blue and cruise right past. They probably think it's a hassle to do the match.)

My friends and family are in this area - not to mention my job. I hate Wisconsin winters, but I feel like I'm past the age where I can load up my car and move on the spur of the moment to a different part of the country (I did that when I was 22.) If I were younger, I'd move to Texas.

Washington, Ozaukee and Waukesha are the WOW countries - very conservative that put Walker over the top. And they circle Milwaukee. I'm going to start looking for places in Ozaukee county. The commute won't be fun - I now walk to work - but at least I won't be living among idiots.

537 "My mother's Explorer has handicapped plates and she frequently has to remind me to use the handicap spaces when I'm driving her someplace. Which might be always from now on if they don't find a cause for her light-headedness."

Spells of vertigo are amazingly common in older women. Ask some questions in the local medical community. Usually there's one truly ace otolaryngologist who is the doc to see for balance disorders. That stuff often baffles GPs.

"Often I'll drop her off at the entrance and find a regular parking spot because striding away from parking in a handicap space make me very self-conscious."

That's how I handle those situations when they occur. (I have several family members who are genuinely mobility-limited due to injury and/or age.) When I then see someone park in the handicapped spaces who walks off smoothly and quickly, it gets my back up.

553 Just watched the Hornet video. Any of you folks former Navy? I noticed they fly with an asymmetrical fuel load, never saw that before. There are several with one centerline tank and one wing tank under the right wing. I worked F-4s an F-16s in my career and we never hung just one wing tank. Curious if that's SOP on the F-18.

My netbook is brand-new. and animated GIF's freeze it. You go on "ignore..."

555 Brand new? Who makes netbooks any longer? The market was killed off by tablets and cheap laptops. I'm curious. What is the make and model of this thing?

There is something seriously wrong with your 'brand new' netbook. Why don't you go get it fixed instead of expecting the world to bend to your deficit. Complaining about GIFs in 2013 is like asking the state to lower the highway speeds because you have a car that cannot manage 65 MPH.

I'm in my 50's (although I can truthfully say I look like I'm early '40's because I take good care of myself and have no wrinkles) and I live in a blue area in a purple state. I keep hoping I meet one of those who voted for Walker and thinks like I do - but no, I keep meeting or being set up with these f'ing Commies.

My ex was apolitical, an LIV. I'm missing that, compared with the f'ing Marxists I meet now.

You might want to consider volunteering at your local Republican Party headquarters or, in 2014 volunteering with a particular candidate.  That will at least get you rubbing shoulders with people who are likely to be more compatible and, what the hell, you might actually help get somebody elected.

From what I have read about voting demographics, the core of support for Democrats among white voters is single women.  There is the possibility that these guys are using lines that have worked for them in the recent past.  Thirty years ago, a guy who wanted to get in your pants might have said "I love you".  Now the line that works might be "I love Obama".  Of course, that just means that he is lying and saying what he things will work which is not really any better.

How do you know he's lying? The "I love Obama" campaign worker might be Reggie Love, for all you know.

Or Chris Christie, if it's a "Republican" HQ.

558 "122 Why in Heaven's name would anyone care if someone had rabbits in their yard?

Quite of few chickens around my neighborhood, which I kind of enjoy, but they can be a little noisy. But rabbits? What do they do that would irritate neighbors?

Posted by: Y-not at October 25, 2013 10:41 PM (5H6zj)"

They stink.  Well, the rabbits themselves don't stink but if they are in a cage with a wire net floor so that their urine and feces drop to the ground and if you never rake that stuff out, it can generate an ammonia tinged mephitic stench.  It makes good fertilizer, though if you mix it in with compost.  By itself it will kill your plants.

I suggest that if somebody says they love Obama, it really doesn't matter whether they are telling the truth or not or what their motivation.  It ought to be an invitation to order the most expensive thing on the menu, take one bite, excuse yourself and take a taxi home.
