Thank God it's Friday!
A lot of death spirals in the news lately. Add this one to your list. More welfare recipients than workers in the U.S. Firings
So in an administration that has had scandal after scandal (IRS, Fast and Furious, Solyndra, Benghazi, Snowden, DoJ, etc.), the only two people fired so far is an Obamacare operator and a national security aide. Their crimes? Telling the truth on Obamacare and speaking ill of Valerie Jarret.

Beer Stuff
This dude is pretty hard core. After safely directing everyone else including children to vacate the burning building, this man reenters his house to save his beer. Rescuin' is thirsty duty man.
After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man who walks with a cane went back in the burning house to retrieve something he left behind."I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," said Walter Serpit, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."
Serpit managed to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.

Maybe he went back into the fire because it was 'Snake Venom', the world's strongest beer.
Physics buzz: The physics is clear on foamy beer. This is why you immediately drink half your beer when you get it so when that moron comes up to you and taps your bottle, you're good to go.
The initial tap to the bottle sends a shock wave through the glass to the bottleÂ’s bottom. The energy from the wave transfers to the beer inside sending a second shock wave up toward the beerÂ’s surface. It then bounces back again and keeps moving back and forth through the liquid until its energy dissipates. The wave motion and changing pressure knocks free tiny gas pockets trapped inside microscopic imperfections in the glass bottle. The pockets implode and create clouds of smaller bubbles from the dissolved carbon dioxide in the beer. Though these bubbles can quickly grow up to three times larger than their original size, that alone is not what makes the bottle overflow with foam.
Individual plumes of bubbles float up through the beer, building up speed as they get bigger, until they burst out of the bottleÂ’s top in a shower of foam.

Car Wash

I'm getting real tired of these environmentalists. These cheerleaders couldn't have a car wash because of the environment.

So next they came around and tried to get his rabbits seized because they're livestock and the area isn't zoned agricultural. He told the county they were pets. The county told them to knock it off.
Finally they offered to buy the rabbits (apparently one of the HOA queen bees was his neighbor and really hated those rabbits). He quoted them a price of 300K. They were astounded he wanted so much for the rabbits. He said "Rabbits hell, that will buy you the whole place and then you can shove those rabbits up your ass."
Far as I know they haven't bothered him since.

I found a new realtor the next day and we bought the second house he showed.

Long ago when I used to drink in public, a buddy and I were at our usual hangout, snapping bottle caps at the bartender's ass (his girlfriend). Being drunk, I wildly overshot and nailed a chick right between the eyes. She was a good sport though, especially after I bought her group a round. But her boyfriend glared at us the rest of the night.

Okay, so it was a North American HOCKEY invasion of Mexico?
Sometimes a little subtlety just totally destroys a joke, and I'm sorry for that.
Let me be more blunt, and use larger capital letters maybe. There is no doubt about it. Mapmakers, politicians, the UN, earth scientists, all agree: Mexico is part of North America. I don't care what their "context" is. They're deliberately ignorant.
Since deliberate ignorance is not a trait of Mexicans I've met, I'm left with the impression that this particular distortion was promulgated not by Mexicans, but by One of Our Boys. That straightforward enough for you Joe? "Context." Rube.

What kind of overbilling are you talking about? If it's taking $2000 of your work and billing it for $3000, that may be totally ethical and moral -- especially if the main contract required a $5M insurance policy, a labor-intensive bid process, and putting up with the client.
If, on the other hand, he's billing for milestones not met.....you can do a lot in a very low-key way. Like "oh, the wiring's done at the main building? That was fast, it wasn't even started Wednesday."

October 25, Leyte Gulf day (to some). Amazing battle, esp. of course the performance of the out-gunned escorts on Day Two. One can only imagine the sort of movie that could be made out a straight recounting of the story, so packed with amazing valor, color, and action. Just take Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors by Hornfischer and screen-play it.
On Day One, the night before the big battle, there was of course the famous last major big-gun surface engagement in history, down south at Surigao Strait. A few years back I did a Vets' History Project/Lib. of Congress interview with Bobby Smith, who was junior radar tech on the USS West Virginia. He was off-watch when the West Virginia's radar detected the Japanese column steaming north. He was woken and told to get to the radar shack, and got outside just in time to be assaulted with the concussion of the main battery's first salvo. His ship fired the first shots of the main battle (the Japanese column had already been beset by US subs, PT boats, and smaller ships on its way up the Strait).
On another topic, someone up above joked about One Scotch One Whiskey One Beer at a mosque Top 20 song. So about 20 years ago I'm with some friends, we're at the Cold Springs Tavern in the mountains northeast of Santa Barbara after a day of wine tasting out in Santa Ynez valley. We're sitting by the big open fireplace (it's cool, December). Far end of the room (place was an historic stagecoach stop) was a stool and a microphone. We noticed some guy in snakeskin motorcycle clothes near his bike as we came in (place was a big destination for the weekend Harley crowd).
So we're enjoying the fire and our beers and over at the microphone somebody starts strumming a guitar and singing One Scotch One Whiskey One Beer. Someone (not me), after a minute or two, says "that sounds a lot like Thorogood himself". So we turn around, and realize the guy in the odd bike get-up WAS George Thorogood.

Yes, Yip, that battle and a straight re-telling would be better than any fiction - and a cinch to do well in this day of CGI (the animation technology, not the Canadian cyber-catastrophe contractor!!).
The US sailors, at first puzzled by the colorful spouts of water as the Japanese shells (color-coded by ship for spotting purposes) erupted around them, thinking it was some sort of display. The baffled Japanese officers, trying to figure out why the US aircraft were attacking with smoke flares and small fragmentation ordnance (because they were armed for ground support missions ashore!). The ferocious heroism of the Sammy B and the Johnston and the Hoel - so tremendous that the Japanese officers lined the rail of their ships to salute the remains of these little ships after they were vanquished. Hornfischer's book, IMHO, is one of the best WWII histories there is - a masterful recounting of an amazing story.
My oldest best friend's dad was ferried out to the Pacific (he was an Army L-4 pilot) on the USS Gambier Bay - I recommended the Hornfischer book to him thanks to that connection and he raves about it to this day. (He had a short war - was nearly shot down by our own fleet at Saipan on day two or three, emergency landed at an airfield ashore, that was where there was a gigantic ammo dump explosion that night - some version of this event is in some fairly recent WWII movie I cannot recall - and received a concussion that kept him grounded the rest of the war ..... doing personnel work in New Caledonia, which was, he says, as nice at McHale's Navy made it sound!)
A good friend (same guy I was with at the Cold Spring Tavern anecdote, above) had a refrigerator magnet on his fridge years back - "St Lo Survivor's Association". I stunned my buddy by asking, "so (his step-father) was on the St Lo?". No one else he knew even knew what the St Lo was, of course, or why it would have a "Survivor's Association". Turns out his step-dad had been in the air when the kamikazes hit, and like others had to ditch his plane elsewhere. He did so right along the beach on Samar island, smart move.

When my grandfather was in his final illness, there was much hemming and hawing and miscommunication until I finally just said, "screw it" that afternoon and got on the first available plane (a redeye) to fly across the country to Columbus, OH. I rented a car, booted up the computer, and discovered that he could be in one of two hospitals in Parkersburg, WV -- so I drove to the nearest. It turned out to be the one he was in, and I was there for about a half-hour when my grandmother called the ICU to say that she'd be late for visiting hours.....because she was in the ER.
I tell people all the time that is their responsibility to make "taking care of their health" their highest priority. To a lot of people, it initially sounds selfish -- but it really isn't. If you are not well, how can you be there for others? It wouldn't gain you anything to end-up hospitalized, yourself -- because not only couldn't you help Paul, but he'd feel terrible that he couldn't help you.
That's not to say that you should cast people aside for your comfort, or deny yourself nothing -- but when you are in the sort of situation you face now, you absolutely need to dial it back and pace yourself carefully. You did a good thing by going up to see Paul, and it's good that you're home safe.

Jean, I think the whole "Sho Go" operation (I think that's what it was called) by Japan was, like most things done in the Pacific from Saipan onwards, a desperation move to slow/punish the US advance. In hopes of somehow making a deal, or at least avoiding unconditional surrender. Doubt they expected they could prevent the liberation of the Philippines in general - but for their war aims at that point delaying it or raising the cost was sufficient, and rational.
The northern and southern aspects of the operation were explicitly sacrificial, to draw off/distract the US forces (spectacularly successful in the case of Ozawa's empty carriers suckering Halsey's TF 7
so the Center Force could get to the invasion beaches and savage the "soft" invasion fleet.
The Japanese commander, VAdm Kurita, obviously fucked up - he was essentially on a suicide mission, so turning back due to resistance made no sense. Yet that's what he did when convinced by the ferocity of the valiant defenders at Leyte that they must be backed by a US main force (not so, of course, Halsey was off chasing rabbits to the north). I've always thought Kurita's failure was one of the worst for Japan in WWII. Their commanders didn't make a lot of mistakes of consequence, but Kurita's decision to withdraw seems to me a gigantic blunder.
I think that starting with Saipan (The Marianas Turkey Shoot) Japan's naval command pretty much knew their operations would be some form of suicide mission - they were completely outclassed and by a greater margin every month as more/better US ships planes and personnel poured into the fight.

Yip and Jean and others, speaking of Hornfischer, I can also enthusiastically recommend a more recent book of his, Neptune's Inferno, about the Guadalcanal naval battles. Fantastic as well.
Again, the ..... dunno, sheer balls and badassery, to use current terminology, of these WWII naval engagements are staggering. Learned a lot from Neptune's Inferno, especially how unprepared the USN was to fight the Japanese at that early stage, and how good the IJN was.
As with "Last Stand", there are memorable humorous anecdotes amid the unimaginably intense violence. My favorite, a junior radar officer in the CIC of the flagship for one of the many night cruiser battles, who finally exclaims as the US column continues to hold its fire and draws incredibly close to the (blind, radar-less) Japanese column - "what are we going to do, board them??".

Yip - that's funny about emailing Hornfischer - several times since Last Stand, and then Inferno, I've thought about emailing him just to thank him for the fantastic job he did on those two books, and for the service he thereby rendered to the country and to the men involved. Now that you say he's receptive, maybe I finally will.
But I'm not close to Austin. However, San Diego has not one but TWO monuments to the Leyte Gulf battle - one up on Fort Rosecrans cemetery and a newer one right next to the USS Midway carrier museum. Maybe when I make my long-anticipated pilgrimage to the Pacific War museum in Fredericksburg (which will be my first time in Texas) I can visit Austin as well (understood they are far apart).
Those mentioning the lack of historic knowledge among the newer generations ....... please don't get me started. On a few occasions speaking to high school or even college classes I've played around by asking if anyone knew what Nimitz Blvd. or Midway Drive were named after ..... guess the reaction. Though even worse was my friend's college foreign policy class, where the terms "nuclear weapon" and "Soviet Union" elicited blank wondering stares from a significant number of students (!!!!!).

98ZJUSMC, about the Long Lance torpedo ....
Fucker was FAST - and have to admire the balls of the IJN for using such a dangerous propulsion approach to get that performance. I think I've seen examples of these Type-?? torpedoes at the Navy Yard in DC and and the old IJN naval academy at Eta Jima near Kure, Japan.
But I've never understood how they aimed a torpedo at a target miles away that was moving - and of course could change speed or course several times in the period the torpedo was under way - and achieve such success. I understand some times they were volleys or salvos, but most of the time it seems they actually aimed.

I don't want to get too technical, but they didn't aim individual torpedoes. They fired a spread which covered as broad an arc of the target's potential maneuvering solutions as possible. That way, no matter how quickly they say you launch, and how quickly they maneuvered, you had a good chance to hit. Turning directly into (or away from) the path of the torpedo tracks (once observed) reduced the arc of interception to the minimum possible, but many variable weather and visibility constraints frequenty made that less effective than the target would prefer.

Non Purist,
Austin to Fredricksburg is a very nice drive through wine country (!yes!) in what we call the Hill Country. Very popular for a bike ride. Luckenbach, Texas is nearby too if you ever heard the old Waylon Jennings song. Worth a visit for live music and beer under the trees. Fredricksburg is a restored old German town, lots of hotels and shops, restaurants, things to do, etc. You will have a blast and the museum had a recent overhaul. It is hot in the summertime though. Everything is air conditioned. Enchanted Rock is nearby Fredricksburg, a nice walk up to where Ranger Capt. Jack Hays held off the Comanches with the new Patterson Colt five-shooters. Walker Colt was the first six-shooter.

HTL, thanks - then I guess, in fact, my thinking was correct - spreads were fired (I used the terms volley and salvo) more than individual torpedoes were targeted against individual targets. Helps explain things.

Yip - thanks for that gracious offer - the Texas trip was not on the near-term calendar but I will factor in your idea when it gets closer. Would love to meet some of our "little friends in a box" on a trip.
And yes, I also did not appreciate the importance of surface-ship torpedo warfare. I believe the Japanese achieved the highest level of the art in WWII, though it was a factor in WWI-era naval engagements also. My flawed memory seems to recall one of the annexes from Neptune's Inferno showing how significant torpedo attacks were in the losses inflicted on the USN around Guadalcanal. The Long Lance and Japanese proficiency in torpedo warfare, I believe, had a great impact on how the USN went about its business after lessons were learned the hard way.
For a cool read check out the Wikipedia entry on the Long Lance - fascinating story.

sorta like 'may you live in interesting times.' not all blessings are blessings and not all curses are curses. context is always required.

Posted by: Arbalest at October 26, 2013 03:11 AM (FlRtG)
I didn't start getting significant facial hair until after I graduated from college (at the age of 20), and I soon discovered that -- while I have uncomfortably long eyebrows, and can practically braid the hair on my forearms -- attempting to grow a beard [even a goatee] made me look like the unfortunate victim of radiation sickness. It's light, at best, and very patchy. So, neither has a goatee.
I am, however, sportin' a 'stache at present....which my sister was kind enough to mention while we were up there: "wait, did you have that yesterday?"

OK, that last one just demanded itself. Seriously, though, it's not just racial. It's all the favored classes -- favored beyond the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment -- running rampant over the citizenry. Justice is supposed to be blindfolded, and when it isn't......well, then it ain't justice.

OK. my advice to those of you who are married - STAY MARRIED!
I went out on a date tonight, arranged by a friend of mine - and my date started ripping on the GOP, the Tea Party and praising King Putt to the skies. He said America should be transformed because it's an evil country.
It's one thing to read some troll say that online and another thing to hear it from an ass who is right across the table from you. His fettucine alfredo nearly ended up in his face.
I asked to be taken home and - no goodnight kiss, although he tried. I'd rather kiss a turd.
I'm still so pissed, I can't fall asleep. I envy those who are so happily married they never have to date again.

Where are you? How old are you?
If you're dating 20-year-olds in California, you'd better be finding them in churches.....but if you're dating 40-year-olds in Tennessee, you can pick 'em up in grocery stores.
Either way, your friend did an oopsie. Where is your friend on the greater scale of things?

Well, zombie, since you and I share a common turf, all I have to say is that it's an entirely typical slice of daily life in the SF Bay Area. You should write it up for your gig at PJ Media.
I was going to say that the absolutely massive abuse of handicapped parking placards is something that crosses all racial boundaries here. Although actually, come to think of it, I have yet to personally witness anyone Hispanic gaming the system with a blue mirror hanger. Not once. I'm sure they exist, but I haven't seen it myself.
Everyone else, you bet. Seen it personally and repeatedly. They pop into the handicapped spot and cruise off on foot quite spryly with absolutely no sign of any disability whatsoever. TONS of Asians in SF proper. Likewise white dot-com yuppies and white hipster douchebags. And as you noted, blacks, especially in the East Bay.
I figure that there must be multiple angles being worked here. Crooked doctors in certain ethnic communities. Clean doctors being taken in by fake disability claims. "Market-based" sharing arrangements for legit placards. And of course outright fakes.
(I know that parking enforcement are supposed to cross-verify the blue hanger versus the license plate, but I've never once seen that actually be done. The meter cart operators just see the blue and cruise right past. They probably think it's a hassle to do the match.)

My friends and family are in this area - not to mention my job. I hate Wisconsin winters, but I feel like I'm past the age where I can load up my car and move on the spur of the moment to a different part of the country (I did that when I was 22.) If I were younger, I'd move to Texas.
Washington, Ozaukee and Waukesha are the WOW countries - very conservative that put Walker over the top. And they circle Milwaukee. I'm going to start looking for places in Ozaukee county. The commute won't be fun - I now walk to work - but at least I won't be living among idiots.

No, not any more. Nowadays, if you're under 30, it goes like this:
1. Blow job on first date.
2. Back-door only on second date.
3. Front-door but with condom on third date.
4. No need for condom on fourth date.
5. THEN, maybe, if she really likes you, will she allow a kiss.
But seriously, ten years ago I saw a documentary with interviews with teenage girls and the general attitude was that kisses were more intimate than blow jobs. They'd blow a guy before considering a kiss with him. Lord knows what the attitude is by now.

Spells of vertigo are amazingly common in older women. Ask some questions in the local medical community. Usually there's one truly ace otolaryngologist who is the doc to see for balance disorders. That stuff often baffles GPs.
"Often I'll drop her off at the entrance and find a regular parking spot because striding away from parking in a handicap space make me very self-conscious."
That's how I handle those situations when they occur. (I have several family members who are genuinely mobility-limited due to injury and/or age.) When I then see someone park in the handicapped spaces who walks off smoothly and quickly, it gets my back up.

You might want to consider volunteering at your local Republican Party headquarters or, in 2014 volunteering with a particular candidate. That will at least get you rubbing shoulders with people who are likely to be more compatible and, what the hell, you might actually help get somebody elected.
From what I have read about voting demographics, the core of support for Democrats among white voters is single women. There is the possibility that these guys are using lines that have worked for them in the recent past. Thirty years ago, a guy who wanted to get in your pants might have said "I love you". Now the line that works might be "I love Obama". Of course, that just means that he is lying and saying what he things will work which is not really any better.

Posted by: Y-not at October 25, 2013 10:41 PM (5H6zj)"
They stink. Well, the rabbits themselves don't stink but if they are in a cage with a wire net floor so that their urine and feces drop to the ground and if you never rake that stuff out, it can generate an ammonia tinged mephitic stench. It makes good fertilizer, though if you mix it in with compost. By itself it will kill your plants.
