Municipal bankruptcy. It's what's for dinner so who is next? Maybe some on this list. 19 U.S. cities have proportionately bigger workforces than bankrupted Detroit. However, the data is missing some pretty important pieces of data.
Remarkably, the Census Bureau excluded from these figures all teachers and education professionals, which make up the largest group of local government employees.Dress Up DogThe figures also do not include separate government divisions that comprise significant portions of many urban public workforces, like the 1,200-employee Baltimore City Housing Authority, the 1,000-employee Philadelphia Housing Authority and the 2,300 employee Chicago Park District.
Transit systems, such as the 9,500-worker Chicago Transit Authority and New York's 7,000-person Port Authority, are also not counted.

Meet Trotter, the French bulldog that likes to dress up. That's a pretty good Elliot Spitzer look there.
Urban Legend?
Malawi: Trade in severed genitalia 'growing'. Man, I thought this stuff was an urban legend. $25K for a severed penis?
The Happy Seat

Alright 'ettes. What would you rather do? Go running or ride a bike with the 'Happy Seat'?
An Exhibit For Your Teenage Driver
This could be a valuable example for those of you with teenage drivers that drive recklessly. Bad behavior does have consequencs unless you work in the Obama Administration. Driver to stand trial for manslaughter in the deaths of two women who were electrocuted by downed power lines when they tried to come to his aid.

Nobel Prize Winners
Nobel prize winners are put to the task of drawing their discoveries. Now if they included peace prize winners, here's a depiction of what the President's drawing would look like.

How safe is your car from hackers? Next time I get a speeding ticket, I'm going to use the hacker defense and say someone made me speed.

So when I looked at the HP site, they needed like 2-3 weeks to ship one with Win 7. WTH?
I could buy a Toshiba with pretty good internals for $350 right down the street. But with Win8.

Hey 'rons and 'ettes.
Yes, STL City is likely going to go bankrupt. Once it discharges all the crap, I suspect we'll hear cries of "unification" again.
Which normally I'd go "OK, this could work, under the control of the county, the city could be reeled in."
But lately some places (like Wellston) that are technically in the county have been going bug fuck insane (Wellston couldn't afford it feed people in it's jail anymore, so it let them all go.)
So it may not go as well as I originally thought.
(Thankfully I live in an incorporated city in the county that, although carrying 18 million in bond debt, has fully funded pensions, is on pace to pay off that debt 5 years early in 2018, and somehow is still running as small surplus. Granted our sales tax is sky high, but there's no property tax, and the real estate tax, which is on top of the county's tax is currently 50% reduced.)

The DistrictÂ’s status as the national capital makes the burden on other cities all the more dramatic, cities like Baton Rouge, with one in 30 residents a city employee; Richmond, at one in 39; Denver, with one in 49; Cleveland and St. Louis, at one in 50; and Philadelphia and Atlanta with one in 51.
--I assume the article had something to say about the roles of these cities as state capitals, but as it stands it's just a run-on fragment.

I prefer to view the dendeavor as a sort of Dante's Divine Comedy with a dash of Milton...
Long is the way
And hard, that out of Hell leads up to Light.
Through me you pass into the city of woe:
Through me you pass into eternal pain:
Through me among the people lost for aye.
Justice the founder of my fabric mov'd:
To rear me was the task of power divine,
Supremest wisdom, and primeval love.
Before me things create were none, save things
Eternal, and eternal I endure.
All hope abandon ye who enter here.
Such characters in colour dim I mark'd
Over a portal's lofty arch inscrib'd:
Whereat I thus: Master, these words import.
You put those together and you feel like you're on the revolving door of Keynesian economics...
Speaking of marvels, Cosplay, and "toil for virtue"...

"Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

Yeah...didn't keep track...I don't even remember what I paid for the shotgun, but it's a Maverick 88 made by Mossberg, that's a Blackhawk collapsible stock with two spacers to angle it down a bit (it's intended to be used with some sort of optics which I don't have). I put the tri-rail flashlight mount on it, I think it was less than 20 bucks from Amazon, along with a rail mounted sling swivel and a Winchester sling swivel on the back with a Blackhawk sling that has the loops for extra cartridges. I don't have a pic with the sling on it.

Coolest thing ever, an F-14B breaking the sound barrier at deck level off the port side, you could feel the sonic wave all the way through you. Yup. Where we live in Commiefornia, there are a profusion of independent parastatal authorities that are not technically part of any municipal, county or state government, but they are just as expensive to run as any "government" agency.
Also every bit as featherbedded, nepotistic and corrupt. Perhaps even more so, since they are not as much in the public eye. I've heard amazing horror stories about the local sewer district. Commissioners basically ordering up costly heavy construction on their own private properties with the district footing the bill. The workers not blowing the whistle, because it's on overtime that pads their pensions.

The map is BS and totally overstates Virginia's rates, compared to North Carolina's. Even the largest NC cities are parts of counties, so NC taxpayers have to pay for city and county employees as well as state and federal. In Virginia, even very small cities are not part of any county, so Virginia taxpayers support either city, state, and federal employees, or county, state, and federal, but never all four levels. That totally skews the numbers. Theoretically, city employees of (e.g.) Richmond are doing, by themselves, the same work done by the city employees of (e.g.) Raleigh plus a bunch of Wake County employees who handle Raleigh as well as the rest of the county. Wake County includes Raleigh and its suburbs and miles and miles of farmland, but a large portion of Wake county expenditures are spent in Raleigh. In short, apples and oranges.

What you're describing IS the "normal school experience" in 2013. To the letter.
"It's so depressing. It's depressing for my kids,,and it's depressing for all the other kids who are being brought up in this collective. They'll think nothing of giving their.possessions to the state. They're being conditioned."
Gosh, as though that were what had been meant to happen. Surely not.
Longtime moron PGiS commented how at her son's school in Seattle, a policy was instituted whereby all pencils are confiscated from individual students on day one, and henceforth collectively owned in a pencil pool. As a result, none of the students can be arsed to ever sharpen a pencil when it gets dull. They'll just flick it in the trash bin, with 90% of its life left, and pull another sharp one out of the collective supply.
Result? By a few weeks into the academic term, none of the students have a decent pencil available.
There actually is a lesson to be taught here, about how socialist/communist ideals horribly fail in practice, but these kids' teachers are absolutely not going to draw any such conclusions for those in their charge. No way, ever.
What's the Heinlein quote?
"Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as 'bad luck.'"

As part of an investigation of a motorcycle accident, myself and another guy went out to look at the car at the impound lot, an 80's Mercedes sedan. The car was t-boned by a Harley rider (no helmet). The guy went through the driver side rear window. The EMT's just hauled the body out and took it away. It was summertime. When we opened the rear door to look inside the odor was gagging..., literally. Apparently the top of the window opening took off most of the guy's skull, and when the EMTs pulled him out his brain just slid down onto the floorboard. Good times..., good times.

A friend opined about The Big Bang Theory that it's going downhill because it used to be a comedy about geeks and now it's a show about relationships probably to expand its appeal to women and there are already a ton of relationship comedies out there covering the same ground.
Most stories have a natural end to them. The problem is that too many shows push beyond that natural end. If BBT's characters never changed, then the show would be unwatchable because the main characters would be too depressing.

Look at J'ville investment income return on operating accounts. That'll tell you how clueful the people running the place are.
Then compare with Palm Beach county.
The difference is dramatic...and it pains me to have to say anything good about the Dems running PB county.

not telling you your business on writing b/c you're good at it but I'd work in the willful undermining of teaching the concepts of valuation to performance, opportunity cost, and scarcity....
in undermining these concepts in the career incubatory lab we mandate they spend 38-42 hours a week in we leave them putty for tyrants.

I have a good friend who grew up in Saudi Arabia near Dammam. His parents were both American living at the Aramco compound.
He tells stories about how the countryside in the 60's and 70's was littered with abandoned new Mercedes. The newly rich local Arabs would buy one and drive it out of the showroom and run it until it ran out of gas, then abandon it and buy another one. They didn't understand that refilling with gas was an option.
I presume they've smartened up by now...

If you quote mine, do kindly correct my description of PGiS from "longtime moron" to "longtime moronette". I hit the intravenous Val-U-Rite drip early tonight after a long, tough day.
Also, tsrblke correctly invoked the Tragedy Of The Commons in response to the socialization of school pencils. I would have mentioned that as well, but the left seem to have appropriated Garrett Hardin recently. Not least because his and his wife's mutual voluntary suicide in their old age seems to square up well with their idea of getting rid of "useless eaters".

In 'Give War a Chance,' P.J. O'Rourke mentions a highway running from Kuwait to Iraq, perfectly straight for 400 miles. Wrecks of expensive cars are littered alongside the highway's length. Running parallel to the highway is a railroad, also perfectly straight for hundreds of miles, and sure enough, wrecks of locomotive and rail cars can be seen every few miles.

Public school is typically a lousy environment for an Asperger's kid anyway.
Either they will die of boredom or be bullied to within an inch of their life. Neither are a particularly good outcome.
I said that to a couple who had an Aspie kid who was not dealing well with public school. I recommended that they, well, get him OUT OF THERE. They said, "But if we take him out of the school with the other kids, he'll never learn *social skills*!"
Yeah, as though what he's learning there from the other kids are good, adaptive social skills that will be a benefit to him in later life. Ain't that a kick. Last I saw, the kid had shelled up defensively to where even his parents could barely reach him.

I believe that, purely as a matter of style, all rockets should be raised vertically to the launch pad from a secret base inside a volcanic cone.
Except for the really BIG rockets, which should be built in shipyards and then towed out to sea before launch.
Thinking here of the Bob Truax "Sea Dragon" concept, a brutally simple and brutally big pressure-fed monster of a booster. Would have lifted the entire International Space Station, which required many Shuttle flights to assemble, in one shot. With margin to spare. Go big or stay home.

Picked up a bicycle today but it may be too small for me. It's been so long since I rode a bike I don't know what really need but it didn't feel right. It may be that it is intended for a different style use that what I'm looking for. I'll have to spend some more time with it in the morning and see. It was just getting dark when I got it home and I barely had time to do more than determine if I still had any ability to keep my balance.

I thought these were one and the same.
If not, some dogs playing poker would tip us into the abyss.

What overall type of bike is it? In general, the ideal frame size has your leg nearly fully extended (and ankle slightly pointed down) when your behind is on the seat and you're at the bottom of the stroke. The length of the frame should find you comfortably holding the handlebars when you're on the seat and your feet are at the top and bottom of the crank.

Thing is, I had some credit for this store and some of it was going to expire at the end of the month. The only other thing I'd buy at that store is video games, which I really don't need any more of for a few years, so I was hoping to find something cheap to let me get back into bicycling and get a better quality ride later when I was more sure of my commitment. But TRU's idea of a model suitable for an adult may differ from mine.

Schwinn Suburbans, IIRC, were heavier than hell. Does this thing have coaster brakes (pedaling backward), or hand brakes? A derailleur, or 3-speed, or single speed gearing? Readily adjustable seat height? Readily adjustable handlebar height? I'm assuming wider tires, more like a coaster than a touring bike -- hopefully with some tread if you're going offroad.
I'd have to say, as a general comment, that "advanced" bikes from the 70s are really terrible compared to "beater" bikes of today. You used to get a heavy-framed 10-speed with lever shifters and with iffy side-pull brakes at a premium price -- where now you'll get an 18-speed with quick-release hubs, quick release saddle, cantilever brakes, click-shifters, and a much lighter frame, for peanuts.

The bike I got has hand brakes and is an 18-speed front and back setup, which is going to take me a while to use right, if ever. I've never used this style of shifter before either. The seat has a quick release lever, so I was already able to adjust that. I ran out of light so my examination didn't go further that in adjusting it to fit me.
Peanuts would be a high-end currency here. After using the $55 in TRU credit I had (kickback from my VISA card but If I can ever get it to zero balance I plan to shift over to my Amazon VISA instead. More versatile kickback.), and adding a 15-month end to end warranty, my cost was a little under $75. I used some rebate cards I had from Newegg, so about $30 went on the TRU VISA, which will kick back 4%.
I really prefer rebates to send checks or AMEX cards. The bank can pull the cash value off an AMEX card and deposit it to my account. VISA won't do that for some reason. I'd rather the money go in my account and be used to pay the card rather than make direct purchases, since the card has the kickback. For stuff outside TRU it's 1%.
This used to be great when I was buying new game systems at launch and had lots of opportunities to put big charges on the card for business expenses that would quickly be paid back. I used an earlier incarnation of the card (TRU has changed vendors three times since I first got a TRU credit card in 1998.) to pay for a bunch of rooms and a suite at the Las Vegas Hilton for the Byte Magazine contingent at Comdex. The second to last one, IIRC. Such expenditures going on the card created enough TRU store credit for me to cover the purchases of the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. Those were the days.
I've since become less enthusiastic for new game machines at launch. My last such purchase I now consider a serious mistake. I should have waited at least a year, as I did on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Both of those were around three years old before I got them and I have an absurd number of cheap games still in the shrink wrap.

So 19 more Detroits eh? Sorry that doesn't look at but one factor in the Detroit failure. Detroit has had 6 decades of misrule by corrupt Democrats. It is not just the number of freeloading city workers, it is also how much the city government gave away to their pals through sweetheart deals with the unions.
It is also how much the corrupt city government played crony corruption with sweatheart deals and kickbacks to all kinds of businesses doing work for the city.
It is also how long the Democrats have had sole control of the city government with no opposition.
You see, there are a lot more factors than just the workers per capita.
As for the Buff's, what at awesome plane that has turned out to be. Still in service after all these years. My father worked on the electronics in those. And my older brother worked on the electronics in those. My father has gone to the great electronic thingy in the sky now and my brother is retired. But the Buff's are still flying.

Mornin', Vic. I can still remember the first time I saw a Buff in the air. Damn, that thing looked incredibly huge! In the photo, it looks like a Cessna 152 next to the carrier....
Wonder how much longer our "newer, smarter" military under CinC Choom will let them remain in our air fleet? Not long enough, probably.

Faulty dots. One pale green one is sitting either somewhere in the Yukon or in the Pacific Ocean.
