Overnight Open Thread (27 April 2013)
— CDR M

via US Navy

Twenty six US Navy ship naming controversies. It's only gotten worse these last 5 years. I'd stick to naming them after famous battles, states, and cities. And really cool names like Devastator, Executor, etc.

Although, it sounds like it wont' be too much of a problem going forward with budget cuts and shipbuilding in decline.

The bottom line remains the same: the Navy is retiring more ships than it plans to build in the PresidentÂ’s 2014 budget request. Over the next five years, the Navy hopes to build 41 ships -- that is if sequestration is repealed or replaced -- but will retire 42 during the same period.

Whereas two years ago the administration planned to build 57 ships over five years, last yearÂ’s plan shrank to 41 new ships. This yearÂ’s five-year plan treads water at 41 new construction ships again.

Drug Mule

How much cocaine can you fit in your body?

Typically a packer or mule will carry about 50-100 of these packets, but folks have been caught carrying in excess of 200--as much as five pounds, concealed in the gastrointestinal tract.

Backup Irony

I bet this dude is rethinking his thesis on the dangers of cloud computing when someone steals his laptop with the only copy of his thesis.

Iranian Air Force

Heh. F-14, F-4 and F-5 jets: not the US Navy of the 70's but Iranian Air Force of today. Still pretty sweet to see a Tomcat.

Drunkest Countries

The top 25 drunkest countries. It's like all of Europe and Russia with South Korea being the lone Asian country. The US placed #56 with 2.49 gal/per person. Clearly, this is another reason why we need to curtail immigration.

Speaking of drinking, I need to find out if my local PD is doing this. Drunk volunteers help police train in Suffolk county.

Sniper App

An app that uses a smartphone, microphones and shockwave sensors to locate a sniper. Hmmm. They say it will be good for dignitary protection but that is only true if the sniper misses the first shot and actually sticks around after firing.

24 In the Navy they are already referring to the terrible 20s. After 2020 our Navy is going to be in freefall. We don't have the money to replace the ships that are retiring. Well, the US does have the money -- but the Navy isn't getting it. 2020s are gonna be a shock to the American public. China is gonna pass us like we are standing still. We'll enter 2020 still feeling like #1. We'll enter 2030 thinking, what the fuck just happened?

37 The Reagan buildup of the 80s starts retiring out in the 2020s. Bush bears a lot of the blame. Navy went on a shipbuilding holiday in the 2000s. Clinton didn't do much better. But Bush was terrible for getting new warships built.

Posted by: eman at April 27, 2013 06:10 PM (cQ4xo)

47 I don't actually like naming ships after people. You get all the dumb controversies and sleazy deals noted in that article. Back in the old days it was simple: battleships = states, heavy cruisers = territories, cruisers = cities. Porting that over to submarines makes perfect sense and should be maintained. Carriers USED to be named for famous early American warships -- Enterprise, Ranger, Hornet, etc. We should resume those names and stop picking Congressmen and Presidents. Destroyers should only be named for Medal of Honor winners.

75 Flatbush Joe 24, The larger issue is that we don't build any large civilian ships to keep our labor force active and competitive.  The Euros and Japan, despite losing a lot to China and Korea, still have an edge in building things like product tankers, icebreakers, oil support and seismic ships - upper end stuff.  And they turn out decent naval craft, maybe not as sophisticated as ours, but reliable and at lower unit cost.  We could do worse than buy frigates from the Danes and icebreakers from Finland.  Sure hope not, but maybe some day it might come to that if we don't get our act together.

Posted by: Skookumchuk at April 27, 2013 06:16 PM (x4x3r)

76 Flatbush, its a combination of things.  But the Clitnon Peace Dividend that RIF'd the heck out of the military started the precipitous slide.

And the US Navy has not crowned itself with laurels because there will only be three Zumwalts built.  Just like there are only three Sea Wolf class SSNs.

The LCS is a two ship concept in search of a mission if their technology ever works.  Thus the Arleigh Burkes are still being built, though the Navy needs a new ASW-centric ship.  The early Yorktown CGs have already been retired.

With retirement of Enterprise the US Navy is down to ten carriers and Congress has been giving them a pass, so now have ten mobile airfields to cover seven oceans.  And Ford is still a couple years out.

113 Good Evening, again. I have been here since 3 o'clock and out and back. On last thread someone asked if anyone else was sick of hearing of the Boston bombers' personal lives. I am too. Other things are happening in the world and restaurants when I go to lunch that usually have sports on have CNN. For one hour I sat at the bar and it was the same Boston woman on every single time I looked up at it. They have it on mute. I asked man siting near me if he had caught any of it and he said same, there are other things going on. Syria has probably used chemical weapons, North Korea is threatening to nuke us, etc. I had FNC on for a few minutes and Judge Jeannine woke me up from a little doze with her rant. Unless something new happens, I don't want to hear of those two bombers. I want to know only if they have additional cells involved. I live near Boston and our office was closed that day and we are across the Street from the finish line. The next thing I want to hear about Bomber Survivor is that he's been executed. He'll probably live longer on death row that any of us here over 30.

115 They should just scrap the entire LCS concept.  For an inshore combatant the thing really lacks enough defense.  Doesn't even have an anti-ship missile installed but that is forthcoming but of such short range, same range as the 57mm guns, it will be pointless.

Bring back the Pegasus hydrofoils.  76mm gun and Harpoon missiles.  Plus smaller than an LCS and faster.

It's supposed to be about murder and psychedelics and cool stuff like that, but all I saw them do was dance. I especially liked that one ballerina who looked like my daughter. The male guest artist sure had that anti-gravity chromosome - great hang time. You know why they give the male dancers solo bits in ballet? Because otherwise, they're just background, window dressing, and technical support. The guest ballerina was good, too. Never fell down once. Well, hi-tone stuff is over. Fancy shoes kicked off. Unbuckling pants. Ready to look over tonight's ONT offerings.

Heh . . . I have a friend who believes we should implement water rationing because in the summer, the region withdraws 150 million of water from the aquifer per day.  I say, but a billion gallons flows through the aquifer per day, and another half-billion through the rivers, and besides, half of what's withdrawn returns to the aquifer.  He says, but 150 million gallons is a lot, so we need to ration water.

380 Couch variants include the divan, the fainting couch (backless or partial-backed), the canapé (an ornamental 3-seater). To conserve space, some sofas double as beds in the form of sofa-beds, daybeds, or futons.

In the United Kingdom, a Chesterfield is a deep buttoned sofa, with arms and back of the same height. It is usually made from leather and the term Chesterfield in British English is only applied to this type of sofa. The word chesterfield was used to describe a couch in the 1900s. The first leather chesterfield sofa, with its distinctive deep buttoned, quilted leather upholstery and lower seat base, was commissioned by Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773). The word Chesterfield may now refer to any sofa, settee or couch with the button and quilting used on this particular sofa design.

In Canada, the term 'chesterfield' is equivalent to a couch or sofa. The use of the term has been found to be widespread among older Canadians. This term is quickly vanishing from Canadian English according to one survey done in the Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario in 1992. Northern California is the only place besides Canada where 'chesterfield' is a synonym for couch or sofa.

Then, we must acknowledge P.J. O'Rourke, who called out the South Koreans as something like (paraphrased) "hard-drinking, tough little bastards, the Irish of Asia"

He predicted this result, and for this, and many other things, most of which can be gleaned from the book 'Republican Party Reptile', I honor him.

392 I'm in andycanuck's neck of the woods, so I heard chesterfield used for couch/sofa a lot while growing up. Related, about regional differences - our company sold some equipment to a place in Nebraska a while back, and I had to clear up a misunderstanding between my boss and the client's engineer about "Hydro" approval. In Ontario, Hydro is almost a synonym for electricity, since the electric utility is called Ontario Hydro. Our Nebraskan friend was confused as to why water approval was required, and the boss wasn't cottoning to the fact that not every place in North America has an electric utility named after the Niagara Falls generating station, and couldn't understand why the engineer appeared to be being obtuse.

477 Three hours left if anyone cares:

Best Buy Deal of the Day has the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade package for $80. What they don't mention in the e-mail or even on the web page, is that if you add this item to your cart, Best Buy throws in a FREE Microsoft Sculpt Bluetooth Mouse that carries an MSRP of $50.

You can find the mouse plenty of places for $30 but this still makes it a great deal if you plan on building a new system any time soon, as I do. The upgrade just means you need to install XP, Vista, or Windows 7 on the machine first. No need to activate or even get all of the drivers in place. That is enough to pass the upgrade requirements. (It used to be you just had to insert the disc from an eligible version of Windows for a moment but they changed that IIRC.)

573 Up to the 500's reading y'all's immortal verbiage. BCochran1981, you're not fooling anybody socking that troll just to make yourself famous. You made the troll too lame to be believable. But your comebacks were worth it. I used to know Chesterfield was a sofa. Google-image shows some mighty fancy Chesterfields. As a kid, we still heard ice-box from the elders and used the term. I never saw a real one with ice delivery man until we were camping up in Washington. "Fridge" was not short for "refrigerator"; it came from the popular brand "Frigidaire." Actual Internet-derived factoid. And yeah I heard Hoovering too. (Also used in reference to what we now might call Fluking.) But I'm an armchair student of language, especially Anglo-American differences, due to, like, Beatles, the British Invasion, and maybe a high-school female English penpal. Who eventually dropped me after revealing she was years younger than she had claimed. Boot! Spanner! Lorry! Lift! Bottom!

594 Diet is religion.

I'll probably lose my man card AND posting privileges here for saying it, but I actually have a lot of admiration and respect for... Richard Simmons.

Sure, he wears pantyhose under his shorts. But he also really truly seems to care about improving health and fitness. He's a small business owner (a Beverly Hills small business owner, but still...) of a successful gym, Slimmons. From what I've read, he's a devout Catholic (although he doesn't advertise it). And I have yet to see/hear of him trying to use government to try to force healthy choices on people. He just continues to make his pitches for health and fitness, doesn't constantly have a video or book to hawk, and doesn't appear to subscribe to anything but the basic common-sense information: if you wanna lose weight, ya gotta (1) eat less junk and (2) exercise more often.

Am I wrong? Anybody got any horror stories about meeting him or what not?

sybil's hubby, years ago I heard about a song by Sting called They Dance Alone. It's about holocaust survivors who lost their loved ones in WWII. At a certain time each year they would gather to dance by themselves with a picture of their loved one hanging around their necks.

I never quite understood it, but felt it was a beatiful thing in a sad way. The woman I with now, makes me understand.

I wish you all the luck, patience, and courage it takes for you to get through it all.

Unit 121 is a secretive hacking unit in Nork military, consisting of very young students trained in China and Russia in cyberwarfare - but imagine how little trust the Kims can have in people who can actually *see* the outside internet? It would be interesting, if I read Korean, to see inside their closed network. Kind of like old Soviet propaganda.

They are estimating $80k for a doctor just to implement the new coding system alone. No longer can a doctor say that a patient was bitten by a dog. They must now code-in what type of dog bit them No longer can they say someone had a fall. They have to code in where they fell. Turkeys! There are 9 different turkey-related codes: struck by turkey, pecked by turkey, bitten by turkey... This is madness!

725 I knew the Norks had their own network but I hadn't thought about it much - starting to get writing ideas for the first time in days. Lark Dord finished his grass eating training in record time. If he could do as well on his pliers and duct tape advanced curriculum, he'd be a lock as the next agent to take down NORKNET! Was it worth it? Did he really have the right to plunge all 10 NORKNET users into internet darkness? Questions like this kept him up and night and reaching for a bottle of cheap shochu...

You know, I really don't know all that much about G&L. I'm basically a die hard Gibson and Jackson player. There are a few fender strats out there that do have the flatter radius, but even though they are flatter the scale is still longer than the gibson. If you don't mind the longer scale there are a few pretty nice strats out there with flatter boards and big frets that really play good.

I've been a Gibson guy forever, since I have medium-sized hands and hang my thumb, so navigating the Fender boards can be an issue, along with the fact that I've always used 11s on top. On a Strat, that feels like barbed wire, whereas on an SG, it's just fine. I was just curious, because I'd love to find an instrument that has that great single-stack tone with playability for me. I like Teles just fine, but you can't beat the classic Strat quack.

yeah thats a toughie, because strats will never feel like a gibson. I do have a few strats here. The ones I have took a liking to is the american made highway 1 series. They discontinued them in 2011 but they are around if you look, especially on ebay. The 2002-2006 models have the smaller vintage style headstock and medium jumbo frets similar to what gibson has. The 2007-2011 models have the jumbo fret wire and larger headstock. Most of the ones I played were really good, there is a decent vintage vibe to them and they go for about $500 used. They are flatter radius. There is another strat out there with really nice necks, and its the black top series. They are made in mexico but they are really nice quality. I don't know wtf they do with the necks on those but they are high gloss and play fucking killer. I do have one, and I liked the neck so much I found 2 necks on ebay from the black tops that I bought for other projects. The only downside is they come with humbuckers, and not the single coils, but you can change the pickguard assembly, which is what I did with mine. They are about $450 new. Those are probably the cheapest option as far as a nice strat goes.

815 I think it's some of that "bang your head against a wall real fast" stuff that some folks enjoy and call music NDH. To each his own.

819 "too early" Always too early for me on that stuff. I can still enjoy me some "Highway Star" and such but 80's and beyond "metal" just didn't appeal to me. Guess I should go get my Sunday morning playlist going on the old 'puter. Hmm, start it out with the great Satchmo or drop him down a few so I'm not still building the list while he's singing "What a Wonderful World?"

820 We won't be building anymore warships. That's because Sheik Ubama does not want any Mohamadans harmed. However, if we did build any more ships, they would have names Like Nidal Hasan, Malcom X, Hugo Chavez, Mukmoud Abadabajinad, and last but not least, Louis Farakan. And they would target the Tea Party.

Howdy CDR M,

Excellent set of links; thank you!  . . . and thank you for your service to our country.

- gotta visit AoS more often; great site.

- nice to see F-14's flying; even better to know it's not likely they're able to keep avionics (esp that hugely powerful radar and FCS) and Phoenix missiles up to speed . . .

- I originally enlisted in '78, late in Carter tenure.  He did lasting damage to our people, fleet and airframe inventory.  Obama's trying to do the same now.

Best Regards,

CAPT Mike
