Overnight Open Thread (27 Dec 2013)
— CDR M

I cringe thinking that this is in our future. Which is having a worse year, Obamacare or NHS?

Cartoon by Michael Ramirez. Top Weird Crime Stories Of The Year

Heh. Top 10 weird crime stories of 2013 that didn't involve the White House.

Everyone gets mad when their fast food order is messed up. A large part of the food's cost is placed in the convenience, which has essentially just been obliterated. 28-year-old Jason Mckusick, however, wasn't about to let his local pizza delivery joint of choice get away with skimping him on an order of fries.

But what started out as a harsh verbal disagreement soon escalated into a SWAT team stand off while Jason held his family hostage with a cross bow. The police, however, were finally able to get him to put the weapons down...and that's when things got really bad.

Speaking of Florida, it seems FL will surpass NY in terms of population in 2014 according to the Census Bureau. No word on whether or not they still vote in both states.

Shark Tweets

Landshark is pissed. Sharks "tweet" their location to Australian beachgoers.

Spider Dancin'

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Active Shooter Response Kit

This is pretty good. Low profile response kit. I would take as much ammo as I could and then add more. Especially when the burning times gets here.

Build Your Own Lightsaber

I'm sorely tempted to try this. How to make your own lightsaber.

2016 Futures Market

Well, InTrade has been shut down but American Civics Exchange is looking to fill the gap. Futures market shows Hillary, Christie leading for 2016. Ugh. I need to bet on SMOD showin' up in 2016 before either one winning comes to pass.

Haunting Images

The 38 most haunting abandoned places in the world. The above image of SS America befits the current direction this country is going.

3D Printing

Now they're using 3D printers for jello shots.

15 Good UFC fight card tomorrow night. Middleweight title fight - rematch of Silva vs Weidman to see if Silva (UFC GOAT) can reclaim his title. Also champion chick fight - Ronda Rousey vs Meisha Tate. Two UFC chicks who are both actually good looking. Rousey huge favorite for first round armbar since every single one of her fights has ended in a first round armbar.

50 Yesterday the wife and I went to see "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", a long movie with lots of archery that's the second part of a trilogy and has a cliffhanger ending. I smuggled in four Burger King cheeseburgers to munch on.

Today the wife and I went to see "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire", a long movie with lots of archery that's the second part of a trilogy and has a cliffhanger ending. I smuggled in four McDonalds cheeseburgers to munch on.

While "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" contained powerful moments of emotional intensity and pitch-perfect performances by a stellar cast, I found its lack of flame-broiled flavor ultimately unsatisfying.

56 Tonight I drink to Brian Terry's memory. The .gov still isn't telling the truth. I spoke to him a few weeks before the rip crew killed him. (he and I worked the same area in different capacities. He was LEO, I was comms for the mil.gov). He told me what was going on when a CPS bird rousted a bunch of illegals just east of my ranch. My wife was at home with her M590 shotgun, loaded with flechette rounds waiting for the illegals to try the door. A year before the peace loving illegals had beaten an old man to death just 4 miles west of us, raped his wife, and forced her to drive north. Holder is still free. He caused the death of an American LEO in his 'under the radar' quest for gun control. Sorry, Terry. We have failed so far.

The new guy's gonna catch hell. The producers are dumb. They should've gone with a woman or a black guy. People would've been too scared to bitch, and the producers would have gotten credit for "bravery" even though that would have been their safest move.

65 Re-post from last thread: RE my Iowa trip, I've made a decision. On Friday the 3rd of January 2014 I'm going to be at Gates BBQ, 1221 Brooklyn Ave, Kansas City MO sometime between 4:30 and 5:00 PM for some tasty KC BBQ (which I have not had in a while). I plan to be there about an hour and then I'll head off for points north so I can be at the folks before bedtime. Any roonz/roonettez in the area that
would like to join me are more than welcome, I'd be glad to meet any and all of you. No need to sound off, this is a completely unorganized event, but if you're in the area I'll be wearing my black North Carolina ball cap so you will know it's me.

Also, any Memphis area morons, I'll be overnighting in Millington on the 2nd, plan to be there around 7 PM local. Anyone want to do supper/drinks somewhere? I'll also be rolling through St Louis between 11 and 11:30 on the 3rd, anyone want to meet up for lunch?

Time was, you'd never presume to tell a Ford owner an alternative way to open a beer bottle. Because he had at least two with him, the "Bear-Hug (TM)." Kids used to argue, chicken and egg, over whether the longneck-size crown cap or the door latch was invented first.

The other urban-legend etymology for ductape is that it was issued to repair DUKW's. Doesn't hold up, but it's a lovely myth. And they do leak a smidge.

In the flivver era, Ford had to warn writers off using ford as the common noun for light cars (it's a "voiturette"). Fender went to court to keep fender from becoming the generic for electric bass guitars. Eastern bloc did it anyway.

Duct tape is but one pillar of the three pillars of handymanliness.

Duct Tape
Velcro
Tie Wraps

Anything can be fixed by the proper and judicious application of one or all of the trinity.

Too complicated -- you really only need two things: If something is moving and it shouldn't, you need duct tape; if something isn't moving and it should, you need WD-40.

191 On a related note, just went to see Saving Mr Banks, which was a treat for those who grew up with Mary Poppins. That was one of 3 videos we had when we got that breadbox sized VCR in the early 80s and I must have watched it 10000 times. Emma Thompson is terrific, as always. *** I the trailer is any indication, it looks charming. As for the breadbox-sized VCR, I remember them well. The first I ever purchased cost $600 at Rhodes Furniture and came with a corded remote.

Actually, it's pretty good stuff.  But for me at least it falls into the same trap that a lot of Allman Brothers shows do (I'm only talking about the Duane era here): any single given show is an absolute motherfucker of a performance, but they all tend to go to the same places and hit the same beats.  King Crimson could be said to have done that as well, but I guess I'm just more interested in the places the Muir/Cross/Wetton/Bruford/Fripp edition of that band wanted to go.

Go make a drink, try to sand/strip a few cabinets, and you guys are debating the finer points of duct tape...
Yes, Duck Tape is a brand. One of the better ones. Don't waste $ on cheap store branda. but yes, Gorilla tape is the shit. I taped a tarp to my 8' F250 bed one day -In. The. Rain. - then drove 20 miles on the interstate and that stuff held up to 70mph.

Repaired the radiator on a truck with duct tape after it was holed on the road. It worked well enough for 100's of miles in the middle of summer in the subtropics. It was a very old truck with the radiator under the cab that you could access while you drove it. It still needed to be replenished along the way, but it held together fine. It was a big hole too. Emptied in about a minute without the tape.

Things are going better, I think. I had a really bad fall semester. I allowed myself to get hooked into that stupid Neverwinter game, and it caused everything in my life to suffer. That's primarily why I wasn't on the HQ hardly at all for the past several months. But I've gotten rid of it now. I look forward to more ONT antics.

The thing about heraldry is that it is a bunch of rules that make it easier to design nice things -- because it is based on a series of rules for military badges that needed to be instantly recognizable in the heat of battle. So, for instance, you have colors -- red, green, blue, etc.; and you have metals -- silver and gold (white and yellow), and you're not supposed to lay color on color or metal on metal. Because when you're being shot at in the middle of a melee on a smoky field, you don't want to be squinting at some bastard's muddy badge and wondering, "is that blue on red, who will kill me -- or green on purple, who I'm here to help?"

I'd like to humbly ask the horde, (as a repeat-request from two nights previous), for prayers.

The Mother of my Two Best Friends has cancer.  She will undergo surgery to remove her bladder and all her reproductive organs on Thursday, January 2nd.

She is a devout Christian who would not even allow the wearing of baseball caps under her roof.  Doors could never be closed in "mixed company".

I love her for her "Complete Mom" love of her children.  She is a beautiful soul whose raising of her children was not only "successful", but triumphant[\i].

I humbly ask prayers of the horde.

424 The tradition at the National Matches is that every state contingent flies its flag. As you pull into Camp Perry, you see state flags on both sides of the road. In 191o, Arizona was a territory in the process of becoming a state. Match directors told the guys they'd need to fly a flag. So, the state flag of Arizona was designed and sewn in a tent just behind the firing line, in Ohio. Certain Arizonans still refer to it as "The Rifle Team Flag."

And, Slap -- be gentle with yourself.

One of the first things I tell people who work for me is that they need to get their priorities straight -- and that does NOT mean that their job is #1 or the project is #1. Priority #1 should be their health -- because if they're lying, passed out on the ground when I need a button pushed, it won't get pushed. You can't be there for others unless you have first been there for yourself.

Similarly, although you properly revere this fine lady, your friends are her sons....they've got to be on a huge roller-coaster of emotion. You need to find calm within yourself so that you can be there for them, so you can be their rock.

Because if they are so anchored, they can better prepare and console their mother through this difficult time.

So, be gentle with yourself, Slapweasel -- and be strong in your support. Give good counsel, and be there for them.

When I was a youngster, I was rabidly atheist...until it dawned on me that atheism was a statement of Faith in itself, and every protestation of "lacking proof" worked just as well when the sides were switched. Furthermore, I noted that most people of Faith were better neighbors, better friends, more successful, more reliable, and more pleasant to be around. Richard Dawkins, by contrast, should wear nothing that doesn't say "ASSHOLE" in large letters front-and-back.

So I came up with a sort of compromise. If someone requests I send a telegram to the North Pole to save his family's farm....I'll send a telegram to the North Pole, and hold it as my fervent desire that that it may come to pass. If someone wants me to write a prayer to Vishnu the Preserver to preserve her family and set it afire -- I'll do that, and hold it as my fervent desire that it may come to pass.

Because any cosmic being worth anything would know my heart, and would understand how much it would mean for me to know that I had helped....but also realize how my celestial address-book has sadly gone missing.

That said, I have some ideas about who might be on the receiving end of my pleas, and these dovetail substantially with Christian theologians....but I can't pretend to know His name, His address, exactly what He did 2000 years ago, His taste in music, or His dietary hangups. I can, however, be most assured that He has my address.

And further, as I addressed above, I'm sure He is constantly annoyed when people keep trying to call Him in to fix human fuckups or laziness.

519 "I'd like to humbly ask the horde, (as a repeat-request from two nights previous), for prayers. The Mother of my Two Best Friends has cancer. She will undergo surgery to remove her bladder and all her reproductive organs on Thursday, January 2nd."

In my own direct experience, more times over than I would like, I have found procedure more efficacious than prayer when it comes to cancer.

Here's my biggest procedural tip, for what it's worth.

I have found oncologists as a group to be rather opaque in their communications.

This is perhaps because they, as a group, have to communicate more bad news than any other group of physicians. And their patients, as a group, tend to be stunned bunnies, as most of us are when bad news is dropped on us from out of the blue. Family members are typically not much better. Everyone on the other side of the table from the doc has OMG CANCER running on an endless repeating tape loop in their mind. Rather distracting.

Most oncos probably figure out early in their careers that going into fine detail is a waste of time. And for the majority of the patients those oncos see, going into fine detail is indeed a waste of time, because the patients and their family members are stunned bunnies and can't cope with anything other than the most basic level of detail.

Anyone entering into cancer therapy has to find one extremely levelheaded and detail-oriented person to work with them and go to their appointments. Preferably not family. Someone to take careful notes and ask tough questions.

Don't know if you're that person, slap, but if not, find one for your friends' mom. Pronto. And although I'm not much for prayers, best of luck to her, your friends, and to you.

The latter evolves differently over time and space (reason for dialect quizzes).
