Pictures of cute animals won't help Obamacare win over converts. Obamacare relies on people making bad choices.
The crux of Obamacare, the most basic thing essential to its success, is that millions of people have to do something that is not in their economic interest. They have to act against themselves, or the program doesnÂ’t work.Liberalism

Liberalism is funny. That one quart wastepaper basket pictured above is the new and approved receptacle for garbage by our overlords. It's supposed to save the planet and make you work out or something.
Celebrities In Weird Japanese Commercials
New Nike's?

The NFL
Well, perhaps it is time to no longer allow the NFL to claim nonprofit status. Especially if teams like the Ravens want to promote Obamacare.
Like Insty keeps saying, let's Repeal The Hollywood Tax Cuts too! All these celebretards vote for these guys, then they deserve to pay their taxes in full to support it.
Female Spetsnaz
Something tells me that combat is not what they have in mind for these female Spetsnaz recruits.
Breaking Bad Meets The Walking Dead
Orgasm Class
So, evidently there are women out there that are willing to pay $3500 to learn about "multiple orgasms and the mysterious g-spot".
Of course, in Russia, they offer a class for mastering the "art of oral sex". NSFW!
This Day In Music History
Cliff Burton of Metallica died on this day back in 1986. I didn't know this part though.
Metallica was en route on a road between Stockholm and Copenhagen, to their next gig that was scheduled for September 27th. Earlier that night the band drew cards for the assignment of the bunks on the tour bus. As fate would have it, Cliff drew the ace of spades and chooses Kirk Hammett's bunk.
The death card lives up to its name.

Probably, but those are the bands that I have a substantial live concert collection of. There are lots of great artists who I only have studio (or officially-released live) albums. And I am a completist, so if I'm into an artist, I've probably got every damn thing they ever did.

If you could be biblically certain that your assessment was correct, with absolutely no chance whatsoever of error, AND you were okay with forsaking your dignity and sense of self (assuming you based those things on a prior refusal to partake in the welfare state) then yeah, go for it. My dad once half-kiddingly (but only HALF) recommended I get on welfare when I got shitcanned from a job back in the day.
But you can't really be sure, can you? And you do lose a certain moral standing to complain IMO, regardless of what anyone says. You don't cancel out your objections completely, but you do lose a little something.
Finally, it really depends on what 'gravy' you're talking about.

I don't even know if the question is properly thought of as one of "ethics," come to think of it. It's not an ethical dilemma, insofar as you're not doing anything that's against the law nor even violating some obvious social trust or mores.
It really boils down to "can you look at yourself in the mirror"/"would you admit it to someone else?" thing. And that's a question only the questioner can answer, not us.

Intellectually, technically, procedurally, sure. No problem.
Dealing with the general public in that context? Having to shrug off the whingeing and whining and attention-whoring and free-riding and drug-seeking nonsense? My head would asplode within a week.
I'm glad someone does the job. Hang in there.
By the way, in my part of Commiefornia, the thing now is for the emergency room to have an airport style security checkpoint. Not kidding.
The problem with illegal immigrant gangs here is now so bad, and the gangs themselves are so vicious, that if one gang attempts a drive-by on another gang's member, and they don't finish the job on the first pass, they'll try to go after the poor sap again in the ER after he gets the ambulance ride.

would it be wrong to make a bogus charity scam if it was for some leftist cause? Like global warming or save the illegals?

Honestly, I'm just too young, and have too much to live for (and believe that's more of a struggle than you might imagine) to be anything but an optimist, even in the face of everything that sucks.

After reality pimp-slaps your around for another 5-10 years, your optimism may wane.
And this from someone who is still young-ish by horde standards, and was still a teenager when I became an avowed cynic.

Actually, I'm a deeply cynical person (as anyone following the through-line of my posts could figure out). But I'm a cynic who wants to be an optimist despite it all. And the reason for that is I want to have a family. Kids. I don't buy into the inevitability of American implosion not only because I'm enough of a student of history to understand how contingent it truly is, but because it feels like a suicide rap to me to do so.
Not telling anyone else how to feel on this matter, just saying that it's going to take a lot more than this to get me to the "we're all fucked forever, burn it down" phase.

I really hate Ethics questions. I am a CPA and have to take Ethics continuing education every two years - 4 hours worth, and had to take more to get the license many years ago.
My problem with the questions is they always go to the grey areas. I have a good feel for ethics from my upbringing and personal instincts. I have told more than one employer that they are intruding upon what feels right to me, and they can fire me if they are not happy with my attitude.
As someone stated above (more than once), my bottom line is if I can look at myself in the morning every day for the rest of my life and not feel a cringe factor seeping in.
And it pisses me off to no end that asshole big CPA firms that caused a lot of the financial scandals over the years I have had my license obviously had no fu**ing standards at all, but I have to pay for it.
That goes double for the fu**ing politicians that all act so holier than thou!

I don't buy it.
In November of 2012, in the worst economy in decades, with unemployment at record levels, with an administration that had just left four to die in Libya while making agonizing gaffes ("You didn't build that!"), Barack Hussein Obama was re-elected to a second term.
That's not something that happens casually or due to unseen logic. That's the death-throe of a republic that will never see the sunlight again.
People who think, "Well, the electorate will obviously wake up NOW, now that all this is happening!"...well, I admire those folk's optimism, badly displaced though it is.
We're not getting out of this. There's no shining knight out there. The darkness you see is not what's spending itself before the onslaught of dawn, that darkness is the sea of locusts covering the sun. And that darkness is going to get darker, and darker, and darker still.
Those who are hoping that people will "wake up" are again, people whose boundless faith I admire. Admire but cannot share.
There's no way out of here, folks. I'm ready for it all to end. As Steve Buscemi said in "Armageddon" "I've got a front-row seat."
And yeah I know that's not exactly what he said, and he was covered in duct tape, but what's the value of a good quote if you can't change it?
Nicolas Cage in "Knowing" should have the tagline, "The feel good movie of the year!"
Goodnight.

Of course, that then leads to the question of how the Feds would retaliate. Close all Fed offices in TX? Remove all the military bases? It would hurt. But a dependent blue state wouldn't nearly have the private sector wealth to help patch the wounds.
Could there be a disaster coming? Of course. But I don't think it's hopeless.

Come to Georgia Jeff. At least it's not Illinois.
Hey, if I had the connections and network down there I would. But I'm an attorney, Chicago is a major legal market, I have a degree that plays extremely well there as well as prior experience there, and a bunch of friends who work there. (Also, I'm already a member of the state bar - no need to take another bar exam, just need to reactivate.) She has a new job there as well.
I keep trying to push Texas on her, but she's resisted so far. I figure a couple years of Illinois tax bills will soften her up, then it's time to call in some favors...

Back in the mid 90's I had an idea for a script for the tv show "ER" (which was big at the time). It would be about all the bullshit that walks through the doors, the runny noses, the minor aches and pains, the tooth ache, and not one of the patients would have tried anything (other than coming to the ER) prior to their arrival.
ER patient: "Tylenol? Never heard of it. Motrin? What's that? I know I'm running a fever, how much? I don't know, I don't have a thermometer. My baby's crying- make it stop."
Dumbest thing I have seen come into an ER- a patient that had take some phenergan earlier in the day. Said patient's mouth was now dry. No problems swallowing, no rash, no pain. Just "My mouth is dry". At 2a.m.

Oh yeah, when I say we're tempted what I really mean is "we're like 90% of the way there." The only concern is both of our inevitably-brokenhearted mothers.
We still refer to a super-glitzy wedding we went to together several years ago, which cost ~$40,000...the couple is now divorced and financial troubles were the primary reason why. Horror story!

A couple of anecdotes....my sister was in a school presentation in either Nursery School or Kindergarten where they had the younger kids do this "clap left, clap right" move....so after she graduates from college, she's driving me around the town where she lives and I go, "take the next right" -- and she does this abbreviated pantomime which goes "think 'clap', move left hand, think 'clap', start to look right...."
Second one, from the BH.....she had an assignment where she was setting up a tech support group in Ireland and was there for a month. Since she was there for that long, she rented a car. Now, they drive on the left in Ireland (as in the UK), and she's never been all that strong on handedness....in fact, she always wore a ring with a RRRrrrrruby on her RRRrrrrrright hand, so that she could just look at her fingers.
After I got back, I asked her how she had coped with driving on the left, with her and everyone else going the "wrong way". Turns out, she had some difficulty at first, but moved her ring to the other hand and did fine thereafter.

"The Public Policy Polling survey found that 20 per cent of Republicans favor Cruz, followed by 17 per cent for Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, 14 per cent for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, 11 per cent for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and 10 per cent each for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan......
The results show that a majority of GOP voters who have a preference – 47 per cent overall – want to see a tea party-linked candidate as their party's standard-bearer in 2016.
And significant majorities said they trust Cruz more than either Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell or Arizona Sen. John McCain, two moderates who have resisted conservatives' efforts to tie a new budget resolution to the defunding of Obamacare. "
Suck on it, McCain.

I think its funny to see how much that bastard traitorous son of a bitch Rubio has fallen. He is going to be Jon Hunstman levels soon. And of course Cantor and Goodlatte are still pushing amnesty in the House for god knows what reason ( they want to probably pass good policy with Sen. Bob Corker).
I hope Cruz runs in 2016 just to piss these whiny bitches off.

(a) scientific answer -- there is actually such a thing as "ejaculatory inevitability" [ http://tinyurl.com/kfadn34 ] where there isn't even a question. (b) the 'scenario is ridiculous' answer -- you need to change this to "....the next day, right in the middle of your seventh bout of wild sex, she dies." -- and then refer to (a).

A few years back, I was talking to the owner of a liquor store, who was telling me that Costco was having problems with people going into their stores and buying items with a lot of air in the packaging (e.g. a chair in a cardboard box), and sneaking cartons of cigs into the boxes before going through checkout and leaving. If caught, they'd blame Costco's suppliers for attempting to smuggle cigs.

Since the Supreme Court is "nonpartisan," they appear to me to be lying fucking weasels. And it doesn't just stop there, they will sit there and scheme, even with the democrats like Boehner does in the House, to pass laws that are in direct freaking opposition to what their base wants. My hubby and I had a wedding in my parents back yard. He sang to me as I walked up the aisle - Randy Travis "Forever and Ever Amen". I think the most expensive thing at the wedding was the cake.
Of course, this was 21+ years ago, but we had a really good Justice of the Peace in Texas, who did a really good ceremony.
We had both sides of the family there, and no one objected to the wedding.
After, we had a fun reception and drove Mom's 57 T-Bird down the road with hubby and I sitting on a blanket on the back where you lost the convertible top.
If you spend too much on the wedding, imo, you don't spend enough on the vows.

This has been complete bullshit from the get-go. The house should have produced 40-50 spending bills the first time the Dems abandoned budgeting, which would only fund House priorities -- e.g. one to fund the DoD, one to fund the FBI, one to fund the IRS, one to fund HHS -- and tossed 'em over the wall to the Senate. The Senate can then try to piggyback additional things onto each one (e.g. "DoD + Obamacare", "FBI + DoJ", "IRS + TSA", "HHS + DoL"), or fiddle with 'em. If piggybacked, drop 'em like a hot rock and send 'em another vanilla version -- if fiddled, go to conference. It would be extremely difficult to sustain the current "shut down the government" bullshit narrative if 27 of 47 bills had already passed through the meatgrinder and become law. Also, if you release five such bills every three days, it'd be really tough to push "but you didn't fund Obamacare!!!" in the media, because you could correctly state that you were working on it. In the end, the Dems couldn't claim you were abandoning troops in the field unless they'd voted to do so; the Dems couldn't claim you were defaulting on the debt unless they'd voted to do so; the Dems couldn't claim that Food Stamps were being eviscerated unless they'd voted to do so.....and all the stuff that makes Dems happy was still being discussed in conference, without a dime of public money appropriated to it......
Unfortunately, we have a "political class" that can wear different hats but always works to the same goal -- to enhance the role of political decisions over citizens' lives.

I think Bruce Willis's part was tacked-on. Most of the movie was great; a serious look at how Islamic terror would look in New York if it were run by a Hizbollah-type organisation. But then Willis shows up halfway through and imposes martial-law, and badly.
This part looks like it was spliced in, probably because some Hollywood suits worried that the movie was getting to be too un-PC (which it is).

Medved is especially bad when he tries to blur the lines all the time by saying things like "McCain is a conservative." If Medved had a single clue, he would see McCain for the lying democrat that he is.
That is also why Tom Coburn pisses me off. He gets all butthurt about Ted Cruz's tactics making him look bad because "this is not the time." But the time that Coburn is looking for and apparently every other Senate Republican member of the "Leadership" is a filibuster proof and veto proof Republican majority.

Seriously, it's just too fuckin' easy -- the Constitution says in Article I, section 7, "All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of
Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as
on other Bills." It's one of the few places where the bicameral legislature is split on duties. Just think of what a "fully-operational battle station House" could do....
How 'bout bill #37 of 50 bills total, and I'll pick on the EPA. Let's say that their 2013 outlays were $14.7B and the government's total tax revenues were $1.47T, and that the single tax rate was 22% -- the House could drop something like: "The House levies a tax on incomes of 0.22% to be used for funding the EPA, with the proviso that carbon dioxide not be considered a pollutant."
This leaves the Senate in the position of (a) not considering it -- ok, the entire EPA goes foom....good riddance! and the burden on American taxpayers drops as well. (b) trying to add something else to it -- ok, the entire EPA goes foom....good riddance! and the burden on American taxpayers drops as well. or (c) trying to change the subject.

Posted by: otho at September 27, 2013 10:06 PM (9gNQd)
You're thinking too much in terms of "command and control" and not enough about community. If your lifeboat could hold 24 people (I know I'm expanding it past 19, but it makes the math work better), you could add another person if everyone in the boat spent one hour/day in the water kicking alongside.....which, in a journey of 100 miles, might actually help. Certainly, the person kicking alongside wouldn't be comfortable, and would be at-risk of being chomped by a shark, but they could also be saved and wouldn't burden the boat much.
If there were two extra people, then everyone on the boat could take a 2-hour stint kicking alongside (actually slightly less because the 25th and 26th persons would take a turn). As you added peeps, you'd eventually turn into a giant raft of shark-bait humanity with a lifeboat in the middle, but that's only if you ran into a whole lot of survivors.

Most direct answer yet, in 2 out of 3 at least.
But what if it's more of a non-unanimous judgment call? What if seven people recognize the murder, seven people are convinced it's a case of mistaken identity, and six people are undecided? Do you take a vote before pushing him in? What if the guy is a jerk to half the passengers, but somehow charms the other half? Who decides whether or not to push him in?
Posted by: zombie at September 28, 2013 02:05 AM (+cx5n)
If the murderer and jerk are obama supporters, they automatically thrown into water. No vote because a murderer would not wait until the tally is counted to act. If you can get seven strangers to agree on identification of someone, you probably have the guy, plus, he could be intimidating the other seven who believe it is mistaken identity. He has 15 minutes to prove he is not a murderer, straight up guilty until proven innocent. You cannot have that hanging over your heads wondering if you'll wake up in the morning.
If someone is stealing they get thrown overboard, period.

Unfortunately your 'extra' conditions of cold, shark filled Antarctic waters rules out the possibility of enough time for the jerk to do much in favor of throwing him in. The answer is: It's situations like this, but on land, that lead nations to be led by dictator-bullies, like Saddam Hussein and Idi Amin. Everyone hates them, but no one has the nerve of the brawn to take them down.

how is aquaman not useless? anyone else would swoop in pick everyone up and fly 'em home. only aquaman needs a whale or something to drag an open boat 100 miles.
Aquaman would have the advantage here. Everyone else, assuming ability to carry 2 people at a time, would require 10 trips. Aquaman gets whale to tow boat, with one survivor on the whale - one trip.

It is well-documented that Zombie is an asian female....as well as being a brilliant photojournalist, on a variety of elitist guest-lists, and a writer of snark with a fifth-degree black belt. I'm proud and happy that she's also a moron who actually attends the ONT, unlike the ewok-in-chief.

There was a big rebroadcast on SF's PBS stations in the '80s, which led to me purchasing the set on DVD. It really stands up to the passage of time because it was all very mental in the first place......except for the last episode, that is kitschy camp surrealism gone apeshit.

Asian is baked into the cookie, IMHO. If I were to meet her and learn that her name was "Nguyen" or "Park" or "Chin" or "magrapathi", I'd try like hell to not leak anything about which "asian" might apply -- and "asian" doesn't say much around here.
As someone who lives in the Bay Area, however, I know very well how deep is the weird -- and Zombie is doing an excellent job of documenting it.

On a more serious level -- gender is out there, race is "asian" which -- if you're in the SF Bay area, means roughly 1/3 of the population in a variety of very distinct groups; orientation.....er....you despise the Folsom Street Faire, but that doesn't reveal a lot; age -- I'd guess 30-60, because you've got the wisdom but can blend in with youthful idiots; wittiness -- in print it's 10 out of 10.....but blending in with folks, I suspect you can hide your light under a basket; attractiveness -- you're an 'ette!!!!!! YOU'RE GORGEOUS!!!!!! You sexy beast, you!!!!!
So you're both hidden and exposed at the same time.....but not too exposed.....(I hope).

That would require that the Republican Party actually be an opposition political party instead of a bunch of comfortable slugs who are happy to play the role of Washington Generals and never win. The GOP of today is not an opposition party. They are merely a conduit to transfer money from naive donors into the pockets of millionaire political consultants.
