— CDR M

Well, according to whoever is in charge of the National (Insert Word) Day thingy, today is National Drink Beer Day. I'm pretty sure that's like every day for us morons. So drink up. Here are some more pics from Oktoberfest 2013. Guns Of The World

What the military issue rifle is in each country. Piers Morgan can't figure out why he does not see an AR-15 on the map.

Costume Season

A little video to get you ready for Halloween.

Shishmaref, AK

Yesterday, CNN talked about the sinking village at Shishmaref, AK due to man caused climate change. Their so-called expert evidently does not realize that Shishmaref is a barrier island and is not familiar with what happens to barrier islands naturally. Nor is their expert familiar with NOAA's assessment of Shishmaref's problems.

Erosion at Shishmaref is somewhat unique along the islands because of its fetch exposure and high tidal prism, relatively intense infrastructure development during the 20th century, and because of multiple shoreline defense structures emplaced since the 1970s.

Erosion rates along the island front exceed (and are not comparable with) those along adjacent sectors. Erosion is occurring along the entire island chain, but it is exacerbated at Sarichef Island [where Shishmaref is located] in part because of the hydrographic impacts of hard armoring of a sandy shoreface and permafrost degradation that is accelerated by infrastructure.

Ironically, the plight of the Inupiat Eskimo community on Shishmaref is man made. It was the Bureau Of Indian Affairs that moved them to the island instead of them just using it during the summer for hunting and fishing. It was never a permanent settlement.

Obama Hoops Video

OK, not really Obama but I'm pretty sure it would look like this.

Barilla Pasta

I'm getting mighty tired of being told what I am supposed to be tolerant of. Our own Political Hat weighs in. Barilla: A paragon of tolerance.

Everything Is Offensive

Some people have nothing better to do than complain. Take this story for example. Concrete posts shaped like male genitalia the talk of Scott Township. I hope the guy that was offended never sees this list of other objects that may offend him.

Mercury Spill

I think I would've cleaned up a broken mercury thermometer myself instead of forking over $4K to have the city/state clean it up. Hope this lady does not have any CFL bulbs.

New Beer

Hello Kitty Fruit Beer. Only 2.5% alcohol content though.

39 The New Yorker has an article about the Westgate Mall atrocity. The murderers laughed and strolled around, banging on doors of the beauty salon and shouting, "Let us in! You can give us makeovers!"

Doesn't sound like angry, put-upon, suffering Muslim victims. Just run-of-the-mill psychopaths, like the Columbine shooters.

An Irish Ranger and a retired soldier were met in the mall by two "Asians" and given rifles. The four of them rescued about 500 people and engaged the terrorists, who retreated when fired on. Surprise!

The Chinese are all over Kenya; I wonder if those were Chinese military intelligence officers. Who else would be in a mall, armed with a cache of long guns?

At any rate, al-Shabaab is going to face the Israelis soon. They're brave men when they're butchering unarmed civilians. I hope the IDF all wear helmet cams. The Muslim world needs to see footage of these fucks getting wiped out, screaming and begging for their lives as it happens.

Ahh Mercury spills.

You know, whenever an old Hg thermometer broke in our house, mom cleaned it up somehow and dumped it down the sink.

It's a very small amount of mercury really.

But on that note.

While working the student center in my school, I had an Hazmat team from OSHA or something come tearing down the hall.

Apparently a professor had knocked over an old mercury barometer, these things have just a ton of mercury in them.

Now my school is a Tier 1 research institution, which means we have our own hazmat team for the labs.  But Mr. Weatherman didn't know that (I guess he skipped out his required training class).

So he called 911, which triggered an hazmat response from the government (even though our in house team is capable and approved to handle this.)

I'm told it cost the school "a lot" enough that the VP from the Environmental Safety department chewed the guy out for...well I left after hour 2.

86 Do the vocalists think you have a speech impediment because you get stopping in the middle of sentences? Did you call someone a mewling quim in church? Posted by: alexthechick - Really Universe Really? at September 28, 2013 10:30 PM (Gk3SS) Lmao. I spent the better part of half an hour trying to find out and solve the problem. I text the church/school's IT guy (who caused the problem) and explained the issues. He calls me. I text back, "Dude, middle of band rehearsal. Not real conducive to phone conversations." He calls again 3 minutes later. He rattles on for a while and gives me a couple things to try. Which don't work. So right as the band is finishing I turn and spike my empty energy drink can off the top of the trash can in the booth. It goes rattling all over the corner of the booth. Sounds like nails in a metal bucket. Worship leader "What was that noise???" The two back up vocalists, all wide eyed, just point at me. "You ok back there?" "NO. No I am not. From now on NOBODY TOUCHES THIS COMPUTER UNLESS I'M STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THEM. I'm so tired of coming in here and finding that nothing works. New sound board and computer controlled lighting. Great. Except now I have 38 backgrounds instead of 207 and I can't save any changes I make for Sunday's set list. I understand things break and go wrong, but I'm tired of fighting my own side with this."

My church does this huge Christmas program with a big light show and they recruit church members to program the lights to go along with the various songs.

I no longer go to the program because I truly thought I was going to throw up from all the flashy flashy blinky blinky all the time.   It appears that each person thought they had to use every effect at the same time for every song.

Excuse me, MBV...as great as your one album of the 1990s was -- and dear god anyone here who hasn't heard Loveless has missed one of the most important records in rock history -- IT WAS ONE FRIGGIN' ALBUM AND YOU COULDN'T FOLLOW IT UP WITHOUT BANKRUPTING YOUR RECORD LABEL.

That said, the You Made Me Realise EP is nearly as good as Loveless.  Came out in 1988, though.  Wrong decade for this discussion.

105 >>>Maybe you have heard of a band called Pearl Jam?

You have a right to like any/all of those groups, but I don't rate any of them that highly.  Smashing Pumpkins in particular strike me as a near-total gyp, with only one truly great song ("1979"), the riff of which they actually stole from another, greater band and song (Husker Du's "What's Going On" -- check it out on YouTube, it's HILARIOUSLY OBVIOUS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdiZB-CSDP0 )

Pearl Jam is actually the best of the four you named IMO, even though I know Ace hates their guts.  I don't really like Ten (ugh, mostly MOR rock masquerading as "alternative") but Vs., No Code and particularly Vitalogy are pretty great records.  ("Corduroy" -- now that's an essentially flawless rock song.)

NIN is meh to me, and Dream Theater took all of the least interesting aspects of King Crimson 1972-1974 and made them even less interesting than that.

106 Gee. Fighting with your own side about something. *taps chin* I don't remember anything like that happening anywhere else at all over the last week or so. Yeah, this is just laziness or incompetence. For instance, no one noticed that when they were installing all the cool light control things that they were logged in under the admin acct instead of the user acct. Sweet. So instead of uninstalling and then reinstalling or whatever, they decide that they can copy over the program and everything that goes with it from the user to the admin. Fail. I no longer go to the program because I truly thought I was going to throw up from all the flashy flashy blinky blinky all the time. It appears that each person thought they had to use every effect at the same time for every song. Posted by: alexthechick - Really Universe Really? at September 28, 2013 10:42 PM (Gk3SS) Hahahahaha. I'm sure that this program can do that, but this is more like "Ok I want the lights to look like 'this' when everyone's coming in and 'this' during worship and 'this' when the pastor is speaking." You create scenes in the editor, save them and then you can create scene buttons in the control panel. Click and there you go.

Throwing Muses were a pretty decent early '90s band actually.  I also liked the side project their lead guitarist (Tanya Donelly) formed with the Pixies' Kim Deal - The Breeders.

BTW, the Pixies' first three releases (Come On Pilgrim EP, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle) are obligatory parts of the Torah of modern rock music.  I'm just going to ASSUME that everyone here is familiar with them because dear lord if you're not you're like a heathen savage in the jungles of Polynesia who hasn't yet been exposed to Christ's message -- I weep for your soul.

118 On the cheerleader pic'ed thread below, someone asked about the history of the Sharp Elbow thing.

The true story.

The Sharp Elbows was my invention.

Someone posted a pic of, iirc, #6 from Battlestar Galactica in a slinky red number. She was so haggard looking her face closely resembled Skelator with very nearly Jonah Hex cheek strips and a nose so bare of flesh the join of cartilage and bone was detectable.

And her elbows were so sharp they hooked.

So, as all the usual suspects were waxing themselves philosophic about how hot she looked in that pic, I commented that she had such sharp elbows that she could puncture a lung.

This, iirc, happened just after the "squachy" thing got going, for time period ref. The squachy thing wasn't mine. Shoulda been. I shoulda thought of that, but I didn't.

Well now that she is ashes in the Missouri river they (the foundation) realized that there is no more money coming in under her name. She was a HUGE money maker. They called her husband and dedicated an award in her name. So here we go again. I have been raked over the coals for saying no. Guess I'm going. I mean, the whole debut Garbage album starts with those iconic drumbeats from "Loveless" by MBV.

"Special" was ripped off of "Talk of the Town", although here Manson and the crew at least asked permission from Chrissie Hynde...

Garbage put out some fun stuff in the 1990s, but they skated dangerously close to "cover band" status.

157 I fail to understand the fascination here with '90s rock music. It is but a sad, pallid imitation of real rock from the '60s and '70s. Back then, I could listen to Top 40 radio, and enjoy it. Top 40 took a shit in the '80s, with disco, and never recovered, and it still sucks donkey dick to day.

All I remember of '90s music is that the singers had a dreadful tendency to do a nasal drone, like that douche from REM. And Bono.

Of course, it was Top 40 going for a shit that got me into following blues, so there's that.

I recently have been re-listening to 'Friction, Baby' and realizing that a few of the albums I had back in the 90's were some really good stuff. For some reason BTE managed to put some significant twang into their music while still rocking out.

The drumming is little too much on that album, though... it is perhaps its only flaw. The lyrical content is pretty neat, especially "Return of the Post Moderns"

Later on I figure out that they have some kind of conservative streak I didn't know/understand back then.

My absolute favorite nasal drone with sing-song cadence was Jeff Goldstein's "Citizen Journalist" video thing on HotAir where he appeared as both a hipster douchebag and "real murkin". They were in the field and the enlisted guy was acting as squad leader (supposedly, rank is discarded while at RS). The Captain didn't like being told what to do by an E4, so he started smarting off. Eventually, he refused an order and *boom* taste my buttstock. The story I heard was that the cadre was all set to send him back to the unit quietly until the Captain got all pissy about bringing formal charges, and started hinting at JAG action against the cadre as well. Bad move. The E4 stayed in the class and graduated. They moved the Captain to another platoon, and supposedly ran his ass ragged until he flunked out.

It can be argued that a single album isn't enough to ding a band as sell-outs, but it's certainly enough to put 'em on double secret probation. All the later stuff, though........(I still like the video for "All Nightmare Long". Extraterrestrial Communist Zombies created by relics from the Tunguska Event. Cool.) Both incorrect.  Pump actions are susceptible to short stroking and jamming by people under stress, esp. those with less upper body strength.

Solid ball ammo will penetrate, frangible carbine ammo may actually be safer.  Your mileage here will vary significantly on the circumstances.  Just 'cause its only birdshot does not provide an excuse for not being aware of what is behind your target.

Excuse me?  Just how many up close and personal shotgun wounds have you seen?  Unless the guy is strung out on PCP, a direct hit from shotgun at that range will stop someone.  Inside of 5 feet it will blow a hole through them even with birdshot.  I'm also curious what you consider "proper professional training".  Not everyone is cut out for Marine basic training, and whether or not you have a carry permit has no bearing on your ability to hit the target.

One of my favorite memories from earlier this year:

Unit BBQ in Japan. (Never trust a bunch of nerds to organize one, BTW.) Pooky's major comes up to him, and she is drinking vodka straight from her water bottle. She wants to know WTF happened on the flightline. Apparently one of the associated guys to Pooky's unit walked onto a *secure aircraft* without Security Forces checking his ID and walked off the aircraft with some *very important stuff.* Now, it's his job, but it's also the job of SFers to check IDs. Pooky's major was, to put it nicely, pissed off, and she wanted details from Pooky, cuz I swear, no one can take a friggin dump in that friggin unit without clearing it past SSG Pooky. She got on the phone to the commander of the SFers and told them that if they didn't clean up their act, she was going to the base commander. Those SFers practically got out magnifying glasses the next time Pooky got on the aircraft.

So yes, there are still good AF officers out there.

281 I would recommend before you buy a gun is to join a range.

You will be able to get training and be able to rent one of the many firearms most ranges have.

You will be able to get a feel for whether a rifle, shotgun or handgun is the better fit for your home protection.

You will also be able to buy the firearm you have been training with or you can buy new.

Either way join a range first.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The deal is, there's a guy we found out about from the BH's sister, who was a social worker in an adjacent county....who had a "monitor and aid" on this guy's niece....but, anyway, we connected up with Roberto almost 20 years ago -- and he's been our "go-to guy" for non-technical projects ever since.

He's actually legal (per the other county's records), although I end up talking with him in Spanish. He's from Guatemala, but lives in Redwood City. I suspect that he may actually be illiterate [he seldom writes things, and usually only numbers] -- though his daughters in Guatemala are teachers. But he is smart as a whip, works like a horse, and gets more done while others are oscillating randomly and whining about working conditions than the others will accomplish in an entire day.

Anyway, whenever I really want to get my ass kicked, I have Roberto over for a day. He does about five times the work I do (he's older than I am, BTW) while inspiring me to do half-again the work I'd do alone. We have an odd dynamic that blows up the usual "contractor/employee" thing -- he often brings his own tools and knows how to do things that I don't.....but I frequently have tricky schemes that wouldn't have occurred to him and odd tools that he's never seen (and sometimes outright refuses to use). This sometimes leads to odd standoffs -- like today, when I told him he wasn't going to use my table saw to cut plywood without the guards in place.

When I move from California to Tennessee or North Carolina, Roberto is going to be one of the most difficult goodbyes.

There are some songs from every decade that are classics. I have three, at most, in iTunes that I downloaded & paid for myself. I gave all her CDs to nursing home day she passed away because they had borrowed? Some w/o asking me. Dean Martin had some really great songs, funny & lighthearted. One I liked was Little Own Wine Drinker, another is Houston. Dean had better songs than Frank Sinatra. There was a radio station that played Strictly Sinatra on Saturday evenings. They played one song about drinking four or more years ago, it was LOL funny. I found out it was from one of the movies they all did together. I can't remember a word of it.

308 Sunday is shaping up to be an interesting day for us space buffs. First off, Orbital Sciences Corporation's Cygnus cargo ship is set to rendezvous and berth to the ISS. This is the first time for a brand-new ship. It launched from Wallops Island, VA on 9/18. NASA TV coverage will begin at 4:30 am EDT, with capture scheduled for 7:15. There is a very favorable ISS pass predicted for me beginning at 6:12 am, and I hope to see both spacecraft together if they're still far enough apart at that time. Then comes the main event, the long-awaited maiden launch of SpaceX's upgraded Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg AFB at 12:00 EDT. This is quite simply the most important launch of the year. A lot is riding on its success. SpaceX has launched the original Falcon 9 successfully five times since 2010, but this is a major upgrade. It is significantly longer and uses the new Merlin 1D engines, which are 30% more powerful than the older Merlin 1Cs. The Falcon 9 v1.1, as it's called, will also make up the core of the Falcon Heavy, scheduled to be launched sometime next year. As if that weren't enough, once the first stage is jettisoned, SpaceX is planning to turn it around, fire an engine to slow it down, and attempt a soft landing on the ocean's surface. Nothing like this has ever been tried before. This is just a test. Eventually they want to equip their first stages with retractable landing legs and fly them back to dry land to be refurbished and reused. Finally, at 5:38 pm EDT, the Russian Proton rocket will launch for the first time since its spectacular failure in July. While Proton is an old rocket with many successful launches, the Return to Flight following a major accident is always an important milestone.

Long story extremely short: this Village Voice Media reporter completely fouled up/messed up arranging an interview with Megadeth's drummer, acted like a complete unprofessional jackass, and then blows it off because she doesn't like Mustaine's politics. Loser.

I didn't say it wouldn't/couldn't penetrate a wall. I said less likely to do lethal damage if it did.

348 No one said birdshot wouldn't penetrate walls, only that it was less likely.  And I certainly encourage someone to be familiar with and competent with a weapon before the fecal matter hits the oscillating breeze machine.  But there are several ways to become a competent gun user, and not all of them are formalized.  A kid who has grown up surrounded by guns and with responsible adults to teach him could still benefit from a carry class, but certainly doesn't need one to be able to appropriately handle a firearm in home defense.

354 Training: 1. Marksmanship 2. Fighting with a firearm (which is not marksmanship) Consider a variety of fine regional or national instructors, in no particular order: 1. Steve Tarani 2. Bob Rodgers 3. Louis Awerbuck 4. Pat Rogers 5. Randy Cain 6. Scott Reitz 7. Kyle Lamb Dan 8. Jim Crews 9. Bill Cain 10. Tom Givens And many others Regional facilities, no particular order: 1. Gunsite 2. LMS Defense 3. Insight 4. Vickers 5. Yavapi 6. Rangemaster And many others - ask what's near you. Proper professional training need not cost $$$ nor require 1000's of rounds, it does require instructors who can both teach and do rather than inet commandos spewing myth. Get trained then buy your weapon. You will save a lot of time and $$$, and maybe a life. Me? ex sof x 10 years, ED physician x 15 years, DoD/DoS Instructor, 500+ GSW post-mortems god knows how many patients, 2-way range time, have been shot myself. I have seen people killed with birdshot, .22, .25 and many other calibers. Just because it has happened does not mean you want to defend yourself with them if better options exist. Fighting with a firearm isn't 'point and pull'. Even a few decent classes will pay off in spades...

359 Given the same initial acceleration, small round hard things that maintain there respective sectional densities do not become less lethal after passing through dry wall, then a larger, soft thing that does not maintain its sectional density due to expansion, fragmentation and spalling.  Typical carbine bullets scavenge alot more energy in the walls, now you should avoid military ball and AP round from whatever your shooting.

489 I donno. If he changes to fit his desired woman, then once he reverts he looses half of what he owns with a portion of what he earns from thenceforth as well.

thenceforth is a word, right? (I hope it means what I think it means.)

I'm not talking about changing to suit her.  Even if you could do that just to be with someone, who you are will always re-emerge at some point.  The fighting starts about 5 minutes later.

We all know things we ought to do to "better" ourselves one way or another.   Say read more, or learn to play an instrument.  Maybe take up amateur experimental brain surgery.

Possibly start going to the gym.

I'm pretty sure you're using "thenceforth" correctly, but I'm too lazy too look it up.  Which means I need to take my own advice toward self-betterment.

499 I love women, they're beautiful. And they're never going to feel that way about me.  It's just how life works.  And to complain about it won't change anything.

Sometimes, though, you want to notice how there's this beautiful woman who notices you.  And you wonder why, not because it's a trick, but because it's inexplicable.

Maybe she's not only beautiful, she's  a nice, friendly person.  Because she is.

And I love that.

505 We don't spend on animals because of their value but because of how we value them. I've spent more than that. I did have a tomcat that would catch and kill jackrabbits so bug they would get stuck in the cat door when he tried to bring them home. Another cat would bring home small animals alive and apparently unharmed, and once made friends with a bluejay that would actually come to the door and make noise until she was let out, and they would sit on the patio together.

Posted by: PMRich at September 28, 2013 10:58 PM (KDUNf)

508 Null: lucky you. At least this person is still in your life. The last person I thought was attractive, and that I wanted to be friends with, got me fired from my job over it, and she was quite open about it: she didn't want to be noticed by men she considered beneath her, and she wasn't going to stand for it.

Then I got to seeing a psychologist who was attractive, while I was dealing with all this anger and pain. Her response: she didn't blame the woman who got me fired, because "women can't be friends with men who find them attractive." But I know for a fact that if I had said fine, screw it, and asked the woman who got me fired out on a date, that only would have hastened her getting me fired.

So, I got the message loud and clear. *People like me aren't allowed to know attractive women.* Not allowed to be friends, not allowed to date, not allowed to work with. Period.

I frankly give up.

Tabby killings--the best cat I ever lived with was a male tabby named Orbison.  One day I came home and there he was, with his beatific smile...in front of a bunny body and head, in separate areas.

His face was totally "Dude, you are SO good to us...so I made DINNER!  No need to thank me!"

514 Null: yeah, thanks. It was and is awful.

And what's more frustrating is I can't even get any empathy for it. I live in a notoriously unempathetic family, and I've always been blamed for everything bad that's ever happened to me, regardless of the facts of the situation, and that's just they way they are.

I've also learned the hard way that most attractive women don't have any. They always get what they want, so why should they give a shit?

So like I've said before, I don't care about women anymore. I'm not going to be chivalrous and I'm not going to be a nice guy. At my next job, I'm going to be Mr. Professional and Courteous, and that's it. But don't bother telling me about yourself because I don't care, and don't bother trying to find anything out about me, because I'm just going to brush you off.

Too late. Since this is an infestation of what looks to be fly larvae, I would think it would be hard to prevent further issues, especially with an outdoor cat. Have you asked a vet about the how effective the flea / tick meds would be for prevention of future infestations.

517 It's odd that women don't want to be seen as beautiful.  That victimhood is more attractive and profitable.

I'll probably pursue the Gym-Lady, but I will be WAY carefull.  Always aware of the next lawsuit.  Because, apparently, that's what most of the fair sex wants now.  Money and income.

You're not their perfect type, and you think they're beautiful? Well then, you're a creep, you have no rights, you're a psychopathic potential rapist, and you need to be doing serious jail time for stalking.

You also need to be made poor and unemployable, which my accuser got in spades. I'm certain that the day she found out I was forced to quit, she threw a party to celebrate.

If someone told me "Okay, the first thing you need to do to train for your profession is to catch a golden eagle", I would seriously reconsider my employment choices.

So I'm sitting in Manas airbase with a couple other captains waiting for a flight home, and we get to talking about the mural on the wall of the dining facility showing a man with his horses, his yurts and his bird.  We all agree that is the life, your yurt, your horses and your falcon to hunt with.  My buddy Keith says, "That falcon looks awfully big.  I guess they really love them."  The next day he comes up to us and says, "Guys, it's not a falcon.  It's a fucking eagle.  I want this life: to live in a yurt, ride horses, and hunt with a fucking eagle!"

To  The Dude

A question concerning games, since I won't be awake when you post the gaming thread.

Do you think it's possible to insert subliminal type messaging into todays games?

I ask because of 2 separate incidents with games and behaviour

1st was several yrs ago. My wife would get very strange dreams when she played Duke Nukem. Get rid of the game - dreams go away. If she later tried the game again, more strange dreams. Rinse and repeat.

2nd now. Several kids that we know, including my own, started having behaviour problems when they started playing Minecraft. Similar to the Duke Nukem - get rid of game, issues clear up. Again if gameplay restarted, issues come right back.

In case you're wondering about the "top of the market" quotes.....when TSHTF, real estate will crash -- but not the same way across all markets. Right now, our Silicon Valley house could be a 5-acre ranch and six rental houses in Knoxville, TN.....but when the bubble pops, it might swap even with a 5-acre ranch and nothing more. If you swapped now, you could swap backwards later and have six "free" rentals in Knoxville.
