Overnight Open Thread (29 March 2013)
— CDR M

I'm workin' tonight so the ONT will be pretty light. Or lame. Whatever. Just be thankful you can comment (knocks on wood). USS Guardian Salvage

Some pretty good shots of the salvage operation of the USS Guardian from that Philippine reef it got grounded on last January. Note the wooden hull.

Criminal Spotlight

Worst thief ever? With bonus video and obligatory Benny Hill theme!

Topless Jihadists

Be on the lookout for topless jihadists (aka Femen) on 4 April.

New Olympic Sport

I could go for this. Except I would add guns.

World War Z

I don't know. I enjoyed the book but based on the latest trailer, why are they even bothering to call the movie World War Z? The zombies look like something from I Am Legend and they've changed the role of Brad Pitt's character drastically. What We've Learned From The New World War Z Trailer. I'll probably just have to wait for this to show up on TV.

Speaking of zombies, the season 3 finale for The Walking Dead is Sunday. For those of you still watching it, who are you betting on dying?

Gary Oldman Losin' His Shit

Dude does it so well.

Gary Oldman Loses His Shit from Flavorwire on Vimeo.

Bill Gates And Condoms

Bill Gates Will Pay You $100,000 If You Can Make A Better Condom. Just don't make it like Windows software.

Boosting Your Wi-Fi Signal

How to improve your Wi-Fi signal using a soda can. I need to do this over at my neighbor's house so I can get a better signal in my house.

2 Abolition of Gender – Canadian Edition Via the Blazing Cat Fur blog, yet another attack on “gender” is being instigated by the government, this time in Canada. The Toronto District School Board is touting a pamphlet that stresses “transgender” rights, specifically the right of people to be forced to call girls boys and visa versa. To this end they are stressing that gender-neutral terms be used to replace words like “daughter” or “father.” Sadly, this goes far beyond “tolerance” and onto practically bullying children into believing that “gender” is a social construct. Safety alert for my fellow morons

My advice for those of you wanting to see a president, stay towards the back of the crowd.
Why?
Remember when Hinkley tried to murder Reagan? Remember how the Secret Service guys whipped out Uzis?
If they cannot get the President clear and the gunman is still shooting from within the crowd, the SS has orders to spray the crowd.
How do I know this? My father pulled SS duty a few times. That includes for Reagan his hero.

Exactly.  Would anyone here willingly sit and listen to labor union workers lecture them for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week?  For 12 years. With no recourse - no way to refute them - no way to disagree without repercussions?

Why would you think your 6 year old should have to be subjected to that?

Besides, Jihadis are allowed to lie about their intentions, and leftists find it practically mandatory. So really as long as you don't have to live together and you can lie constantly, alliances are quite simple to maintain.

Okay, so I just watched the trailer for White House Down and have the following two thoughts:

1.   Is Channing Tatum in everything now?   Note that I am not complaining about this, at all, just a question.

2.   So it appears that Emmerich is only blowing up DC this time and that just can't be right.   I mean, someway, somehow, NYC and LA have to go boomy too.   It is an Emmerich movie after all.

125 I wonder how much damage the Norks could really do, conventionally speaking. Obviously if they actually got off a nuke strike that's big, but I'm skeptical they have working nuke missiles. It's always said the Norks could rain down destruction with conventional artillery on Seoul. But how well has that equipment been maintained? And how quickly could we and the SKs destroy the Nork artillery once a real war started. So how many days or weeks would it take to decimate the Nork arsenal? And how much damage could they really do in the meantime? The news always says it would be hundreds of thousands, maybe millions killed in South Korea. I'm really skeptical. I think the Nork military machine would start breaking down almost immediately and we underestimate how effective the US and South Korea would be at targeting and destroying the Nork's weaponry.

The Norks have thousands of artillery pieces, IIRC, targeting Seoul.  They're dug into the mountains, which means they pop out of the bunkers, fire a round, and then pull them back to safety.  Could we destroy them all? Yes, but it would still suck for anyone between Seoul and the DMZ.

When the zombies kill one of the living, do the victims become one of the zombies?

In other words, do they behave like Republicans once they're in Washington or on TV for a few years?

Well there is some spoilerishness to talking about turning, but if you want to get really technical if a zombie kills you, now you will not turn.  Because if a zombie kills you they are going to eat you before you turn.   Now if a zombie bites you, yes you will end up turning.

having less luck in putting together a donor list than I would have hoped.  It's slow going.

The free ones are up to about 200 names.  Then I have a Ron Paul list I'm going to tap of about 900 names.

1100 people, average 4% ROR over a couple of months... average $50 per hit (some more, some less)... $2200.  Not a lot.

April 21st is a fundraiser for Mike Sullivan.  We're setting it up and we are a named sponsor.  So maybe we get lucky and pull in two grand as a thank you very much... still not much.

But we're planning a reception on May 18th that should bring in $25k before expenses and $22k after...

that's some real jack

Anyway, at that point, we can invest in some real donor lists, and start the mail-and-phone fundraising in earnest.

So, that's kind of my stream of consiousness financial report.

350 "Where can I buy MREs? The U.S. Government does not allow the manufacturers of military MREs to sell them to the general public. Please see the page on Buying MREs and also the page on Civilian MREs for a commercial alternative to military MREs." http://www.mreinfo.com/us/mre/mres.html December 28, 2010: Buy-it-Now pricing is currently around $40-$60 per case. MREs from 2009 can be found for $40/case but the 2010 menu MREs are going for $50-60. The real trick to buying MREs on eBay continues to be shipping. Many eBay sellers have taken to using highly inflated flat-rate shipping. It's not uncommon to see a flat rate of $25-$30 just for shipping a case of MREs - even if you live in the same state as the seller. So if you see a good auction for $30 or $40 keep a close eye on the shipping because many sellers are trying to stick it to you there. If you can find a Buy-it-Now auction for $45 with actual shipping charges, you've probably found one of the better deals.

Not exactly and yes.

See, everyone's already infected so anyone that dies for any reason at all turns. Though damage that would destroy a zombie, if inflicted before the turning completes, does keep them down. So headshot everyone for good measure, unless you're an asshole like the governor.

The main character was told this by the last dude at the CDC at the end of season 1 and told everyone he knew at the end of season 2. Were now a year from the outbreak in story time, so it's pretty likely anyone left has figured it out, too.

357 Pleasant Hill Grain has a pretty good selection: http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/foodpak1.aspx That's something like 23 boxes as delivered by UPS. Big ones, too. I made sure I was home when it was delivered, as I didn't want it sitting in my driveway all day arousing the curiosity of my neighbors. It includes several large plastic buckets of whole grain wheat. And by "whole grain" I mean "not flour", so you may want to throw in a grain mill as well. Which, conveniently, they also sell. Ironically, when I ordered all that, I also got a cookbook which has inspired me to start cooking normal, regular food from scratch, which I never did before. Seriously, that's a hell of a website.

363 330 I've seen MREs available for sale to the public on-line. I think they are pricey. They are. OK for travelling, but not the best choice for long term hide or manning the ramparts in the ancestral castle. The upside to MRE's is they require little water, generally. Downside is enormous calorie/fat content. Few will be pulling intense combat ops burning 6000 calories a day. I wish I could find the old LRRP rats, but they would all be seriously out of date. Last I used them was the mid-80's and they were getting old.

Note especially, they count the Fort Hood shooter among "white men." I thought I was the only person who still thinks of dudes named Hasan as white? (I'm a traditionalist.) Isn't he one of those "brown people" we're murdering all over the world? In any other context...

I didn't like that part of the book. Max Brooks just had to put in a 'the military is stoopid' bit with spectacular failure even though it is far from the first encounter. Such reliance on already failed doctrine on a massive scale just doesn't seem likely with today's forces.

I think the same scene could have been done a lot better if it featured a lot of new and improvised weapons being used to see what works when they had a large volume of test subjects available but get out of control when the testers get sloppy.

We usually gave it to them in pieces so they didn't instantly try to swallow the whole thing. One of my favorites was when my dad had a major construction project. The landscape architect's name was Mr. Wong, and they had a shop on the premises doing street signs for the various parts of the project.....so the guys in the shop made one up for "Wong Way" and put it on a little cul-de-sac that was otherwise unnamed.

Parker (and Stone) thought that it was for political reasons. I have the uncut version at home and... I gotta agree with Parker-Stone. If "Splice" can slip by with an R then "Orgazmo" is almost PG-13.

You can scale up an antenna from a variety of plans on the net to the point where it's like your neighbors unsecured  router is sitting in the room with you. Ingredients include poster board, aluminum foil, glue. No special skills required ... other than being able to send a pattern to your printer after you have scaled it up.

579 Berserker, you say that the white man knows how to make war, but I'd disagree - he *knew* how to make war at the turn of the 20th century, at least in terms of victory v. defeat.  WWI and WWII don't provide an illustration either way, as they were, for the most part, western whites killing other western whites.  Somewhere along the way, we've gone from W.T. Sherman's "total war" to nation building.  I sincerely hope that no kinetic action is required with the NorKs, because it will take half a century and much bloodletting (not necessarily in that order) to get them up to the nuances of modern life.  Neither China nor S. Korea wants anything to do with the refugees, so it will be interesting to say the least if things go hot.  The NorKs must be in a more desperate position than normal to agitate in the way they have been lately.

Posted by: StPatrick_TN at March 30, 2013 02:04 AM (un8zR) They're probably still looking for a payout instead of actual war. On the other hand, they're not known for stability. It could be a cult / messiah end move, sort of a national Heaven's Gate.

591 http://tinyurl.com/cscywoa Interesting. And even if the statues are not 'sacred', people in the North have been punished for 'insufficient grief', so why risk it?

Posted by: Adriane ... at March 29, 2013 10:17 PM (TvO05)

592 The NorKs must be in a more desperate position than normal to agitate in the way they have been lately. There is a chance that a faction of the NK Armed forces sees the potential of the US B-2s ... A Nork ship that opens fire on an SK target could get cluster-bombed (look for a video of an Iranian frigate getting this treatment ... the pain projects out from your screen). A wave of B-2s, targeting Nork gun-and-rocket-emplacements facing Seoul, could deliver the same treatment to perhaps a 20km-wide corridor north of Seoul, opening up a path through the Nork lines and minefields ... a dash north by the SKs, and Kim Un-Man, and a bunch of Nork generals, will will be looking to escape to China, past all the other refugees. I wonder if Kim is up for "Survivor: Yalu Edition" ...

597 I think maybe "oh shit" is the new "hey." I can see it. As in, I went shopping for Easter dinner-ish and as I went for my wallet realized I had forgotten my coupons. So instead of 'hey, I forgot my coupons', it was 'OH SHIT!!!! I forgot my coupons...'

Yeah I forgot who was president.

I was thinking though it wouldn't be like the shit we have been doing lately, mostly because an actual attack on us by an actual defined country in an actual defined uniform would pretty much assure that the gloves would come off and we would go wwII style. Like I said though, I forgot for a sec who was president.
