The Sequester In One Chart.

Ah. Second day of March. You know what that means? Spring is near. And that means spring cleaning is right around the corner. So what Household Chores Are The Worst? I'm gonna have to go with the bathroom. At least any bathroom my son uses. Let's just say his aim needs some work. Air Combat Stories

Fascinating read from the early days of the first Gulf War. Gulf Mission From Air Forces Monthly Covering The 614th TFS Lucky Devils.

Multiple SAMs were launched at the package, some ballistic and unguided and some tracking with a full system lock-on. In spite of this, some members of the package refused to jettison their bombs until clear of the city to avoid possible damage to civilian non-combatants. One of the missiles guided toward Clap 4, piloted by Capt. Mike Cujo Roberts. A missile break warning sounded over the radio and Cujo saw the missile as it guided towards him. It passes behind his aircraft and detonates, and Cujo believes he is safe until his aircraft begins to pitch over and he loses control. As the jet approaches negative 1'g', Cujo ejected over downtown Baghdad. No one observed an ejection, nor saw a 'chute.

Meanwhile, ET became separated from the rest of the package because of his missile defensive break turns. As he defeats the missiles coming off the target, additional missiles are fired, this time, from either side of the rear quadrants of his aircraft. Training for SAM launches up to this point had been more or less book learning, recommending a pull to an orthogonal flight path 4 seconds prior to missile impact to overshoot the missile and create sufficient miss distance to negate the effects of the detonating warhead. Well, it works. The hard part though, is to see the missile early enough to make all the mental calculations.

The energy required to execute these missile break turns forced Maj. Tullia's jet to descend to 10,000ft (3,050ml, which put him in the heart of the AAA envelope. The only answer in this case was to select afterburner in order to increase airspeed and climb. However, being extremely low on fuel, and 700 nautical miles from home, afterburner must be used very judiciously. Before sufficient airspeed is increased, however, ET is faced with another multiple missile launch. In this case two separate SA-6 missile sites launch at his jet while he is climbing out of the AAA envelope. By continuing to unload his aircraft, ET watches the missiles as they close on his aircraft. The unloading and accelerating causes his aircraft to change its flight path, and a change in the missile flight path can be observed as well. As the timed break turns are accomplished, one missile flies so close that ET can hear the roar of the rocket as it passes where, just a fraction of a second earlier, the right wing was. Two missiles are launched towards him from the front of his aircraft and can be easily seen on his HUD film. Finally, as he reaches the outskirts of the city an optically guided missile of unknown type is fired. There is no radar warning of the launch, but the track of the missile can easily be observed to be guiding towards his aircraft. A defensive turn overshoots the missile, and Maj. Tullia proceeds on his way, now searching for the rest of his Flight.

Here's the HUD video of Major Tullia's flight that day.

Biden's Shotgun

I think this shot gun might explain Biden's speaking prowess. The Alcohol Shot Gun.

CGI Audrey Hepburn

Holy crap this is sooo good. She was one beautiful woman and it is spooky how good computers are getting today. We just might see a movie with dead CGI actors like Lucas hinted at a few years ago.

Miss Israel

Impressive. 6 of 20 finalists for Miss Israel Are Soldiers. I'd like to see a shooting competition added to the swimsuit part of the show.

Top Secret Drum Corps

OK a real drum corps to make up for last night's booty corps.

Geek Pin-ups

Dominic Marco's Geektastic Pin-up Art.

After WWII Photos

Some really great images. World War II: After The War. That's a $100 TV in the above photo. Check out the screen.

15 Company-wrecking Union Subsidized by Uncle Sam The now bankrupt and destroyed makers of tasty treats, Hostess, was destroyed last year by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union. That union went on strike, even though the Teamsters pointed out to them that the company could not survive and would have to fold. The loss of the union members’ jobs was hailed as a victory by the union. While on the surface it seemed almost deranged for the union member to vote to lose their jobs, it turns out that the Federal Government had their back all along. The U.S. Department of Labor announced that over 18,000 former Hostess workers will gain benefits from the “Trade Adjustment Assistance" More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=1572

#Sequester Diaries

Day 2-   Evening falls.  The struggle for food continues.  It seems like forever since my last meal.  Foraging in the darkened kitchen I hear a rustling sound in the corner.  I lunge, and by sheer fortune my hand lands on the target of my attentions.  With one quick twist of my wrist I split my prize in two.  Now I am faced with the age-old dilemma.

20 Good evening. Someone just posted this recipde for candied jalapenos. Someone try this and tell me how it turns out. Candied Jalapenos (aka: Cowboy Candy) Prep time: 30 mins Cook time: 45 mins Total time: 1 hour 15 mins Serves: 32 Ingredients: 3 pounds fresh, firm, jalapeno peppers, washed 2 cups cider vinegar 6 cups white granulated sugar ½ teaspoon turmeric ½ teaspoon celery seed 3 teaspoons granulated garlic 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper Directions: Wearing gloves, remove the stems from all of the jalapeno peppers. The easiest way to do this is to slice a small disc off of the stem-end along with the stem. Discard the stems. Slice the peppers into uniform ⅛-1/4 inch rounds. Set aside. In a large pot, bring cider vinegar, white sugar, turmeric, celery seed, granulated garlic and cayenne pepper to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the pepper slices and simmer for exactly 4 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the peppers, loading into clean, sterile canning jars to within ¼ inch of the upper rim of the jar. Turn heat up under the pot with the syrup and bring to a full rolling boil. Boil hard for 6 minutes. Use a ladle to pour the boiling syrup into the jars over the jalapeno slices. Insert a cooking chopstick to the bottom of the jar two or three times to release any trapped pockets of air. Adjust the level of the syrup if necessary. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp paper towel and fix on new, two-piece lids to finger-tip tightness. *If you have leftover syrup, and it is likely that you will, you may can it in half-pint or pint jars, too. ItÂ’s wonderful brushed on meat on the grill or added to potato salad or, or, orÂ… In short, donÂ’t toss it out! Place jars in a canner, cover with water by 2-inches. Bring the water to a full rolling boil. When it reaches a full rolling boil, set the timer for 10 minutes for half-pints or 15 minutes for pints. When timer goes off, use canning tongs to transfer the jars to a cooling rack. Leave them to cool, undisturbed, for 24 hours. When fully cooled, wipe them with a clean, damp washcloth then label. Allow to mellow for at least two weeks, but preferably a month before eating. Or donÂ’t. I wonÂ’t tell! Notes: I know this sounds crazy, but double this recipe. People will beg you for jars of this and get surly if you say no. Just. Trust. Me. There arenÂ’t words that exist to describe how addictive these little savoury, sweet, spicy, crunchy, garlicky pickled jalapeno rounds are. Put them on sandwiches, tacos, rice or bake them into cornbread. YouÂ’ll need more and more!

84 Mayor Bloomberg was booed today as he walked in the annual St. PatrickÂ’s Parade in hurricane-hammered Rockaway, Queens.

The jeers grew so loud toward the end of the parade that mayoral candidate and Council Speaker Christine Quinn appeared to break away from the mayor to march separately.

A spokesman for Quinn later said she always intended to walk separately from the mayor.

Locals didn’t spare their ire over the area’s slow recovery, hoisting signs reading, “Mr. Mayor, we need jetties” and “Listen to the Rockaways.”

“We’ve been dying down here, up to our ears in muck trying to rebuild, get back to a regular life,” one heckler told The Post.

“For the politicians to come down here and try to take our celebration and make it their thing … it’s disgusting.”

At the end of the route, Bloomberg thanked the Sanitation Department, said, “This was a great day for the Rockaways,” and abruptly jumped in his car.

Bloomberg wasnÂ’t the only politician crossed by parade-goers.

Revelers heckled Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer after he cheered through a bull horn, “Let’s hear it for the Rockaways.”

“Send money, pal. Send money!” one heckler yelled back. “Talk is cheap!”

107 THIRTEEN years ago, researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum began the grim task of documenting all the ghettos, slave labor sites, concentration camps and killing factories that the Nazis set up throughout Europe.

What they have found so far has shocked even scholars steeped in the history of the Holocaust.

The researchers have cataloged some 42,500 Nazi ghettos and camps throughout Europe, spanning German-controlled areas from France to Russia and Germany itself, during HitlerÂ’s reign of brutality from 1933 to 1945.

The figure is so staggering that even fellow Holocaust scholars had to make sure they had heard it correctly when the lead researchers previewed their findings at an academic forum in late January at the German Historical Institute in Washington.

“The numbers are so much higher than what we originally thought,” Hartmut Berghoff, director of the institute, said in an interview after learning of the new data.

“We knew before how horrible life in the camps and ghettos was,” he said, “but the numbers are unbelievable.”

sven, you dumb bastard. Obama took out bin Laden with two helicopters and 24 Navy Seals.

And Dumbya wasted two trillion?

1) Killing bin Laden does not equal victory. Do you understand the long-term strategic aims behind the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq? Hint: It was not to kill Osama, though would have been a nice bonus.

2) The stricke that killed bin Laden was the result of a decade of work, mostly done under Bush, most of which was opposed by Obama. Obama is again claiming credit for something which he had very little to do with, probably because it is the only success in that area that he can claim.

284 Wow. I remember a TV with a bit larger screen when I was a kid, probably 9 inches or so.  But the damn thing was about the size of an old Ford Falcon.  Boy, those were the days!!  It was considered' furniture' for quite a few years after it quit working, with a bunch of other clutter sitting on top of it.  I used to go to the hardware store with the old man and check the tubes and get replacements.  When we'd pull it from the wall to take the tubes out I can remember asking why some of those little firecracker looking things looked like they'd been soaked in water 'til they popped.  He never quite understood that there's more in there than tubes...........

285 You think that stuff will work on black & brown widow spiders. *** It works on hard-shelled insects by cutting into their shell and causing them to dehydrate. I'm not sure if it will work on spiders or not. You might be able to Bing it. The good thing about brown, rather than black widows, is that they are completely non-aggressive and will even abandon their nests to get away from you.

384 I have a store on eBay and I sell antiques and collectibles which I find at local garage sales and auctions.

Hot items currently are the following,  for any of you who are cleaning out your homes or your parents' homes:

Vintage colored glass from the 1950-1970 era,  including those godawful orange stretch vases.
Vintage toys from the 60's and 70's.  I just sold a Mattel Time Machine for $50.
Vintage jewelry and clothing from the 50's and 60's,  especially designer stuff and signed costume jewelry.
Vintage Christmas decor from the 50's, including stenciled Christmas ornaments and hard plastic reindeer and Santas.

If you ever wonder about stuff you have,  leave me a note on the morning news thread and I will tell you my best estimate on the price.

If I was making a low budget science fiction movie or horror flick, I would have probably asked how much for it.  Instead I saw it as weird.

398 #392  Yes,  I am.  I started doing it a few years ago to get rid of some stuff left over from when I had a booth at a local antique mall.

I have slowly expanded and now have a store.  My best profit this year was buying a $10 Lalique bowl with a chip and selling it at auction to a collector in the UK for $736.00.  That there is some good profit!

It's a perfect business for me because I have a weird sort of brain which remembers things I see in articles and magazines,  and I therefore know what is currently collectible and can be sold.

It keeps me busy while my husband mines gold in Africa.  LOL!

But at same time do not think, just because its rare, it will sell.  I know an idiot on eBay who thinks because they have a super rare resin kit that is now 23 years old they can ask any price they want.  $425 asking and no one is bidding on it.

412 #397  Yes,  they do.  I don't deal with those because I am not an expert.  I have seen them go at the local cheapy-deep auction for $50 for a flat of 15.  Certain ones are more collectible.

Best way to check value is to go into eBay "advanced search" (in upper right corner of the screen in small letters).  Type in your model and year and then check the box for "completed listings."  Then hit the blue search button.

You will see all the completed sales and what they sold for (in green).  Those that did not sell will be in red.

It's not possible for a human being to truly hold such ridiculous opinions.

Sorry, but they do. I have a pretty good friend who is a Noam Chomsky (and others of that ilk) reading, total leftist who thinks we were wrong to invade Afghanistan after 9-11, that Obama is inspiring, and that the Iraq war was about Bush/Ceyney and oil. Really.

He is totally self made in a tough business, worth millions, retired in his mid-50s, has two great kids, and is putting most of his $ away for charity so his kids don't get too spoiled.

He has said he cannot conceive of why I hold the political beliefs I do, and I've said the same to him. We have to agree to not discuss too much or we couldn't be friends. Some people are just wired differently, they really are. He's done the reading and studying, he gets news from a number of sources, traveled to Palestine and Israel a few years ago to try to understand the conflict, etc. He's not even really very political. He just is a leftist and you couldn't shake his beliefs with a sledge hammer. Go figure.

It;s just a horrifying situation and it isn't a typical sinkhole. The chasm is about 100' across and now the spot where it collapsed is about 100' deep. 443 So my dad's latest acquisition was back before Christmas. 2012 Charger RT. He's added new exhaust, new header, cold air induction and hooked the little computer to it and tweeked all the performace shit. We figure he's got about 450 hp or so right now. So we went for a drive. Four lane road, grass median separates the lanes. He cranks it up to about 100mph and then started to back off as we were coming up on a gentle curve. Just as we are about to enter the curve, I see something to my left. Very dark. Is that a dog? No, it's a fucking deer, who has now bounded directly in front of a car doing 65mph. Dad got a tap on the brakes and we missed each other by a matter of feet. So close that the wind of passing, knocked the deer down into the grass.

As part of the Let It Burn coalition, I'd almost support a sunsetting one year doubling of all the tax rates just to prove what would happen.

Of course it would never be allowed to sunset, so it's DOA as a tactic, but the thought amuses me.

In this case, 'most popular' should be read as 'named recognized by a substantial portion of Americans.'

Consider, how many governors can you name outside your own state or an adjoining state? Most don't get a lot of national news mention unless there is some major disaster in their state or they are a renown lunatic. Here in CA we've hit the awful governor jackpot with Jerry Brown.

Those of you crying for the poor GYNs in the previous thread, they've got nothing on us ER docs.  We do pelvic exams on 3 types of women in general--there are also the normal ones but those are few and far between.

1) Crazy women

2) Women who are having or think they are having a miscarriage.  Sometimes they are crazy, and sometimes she takes off her pants and BAM! fetus.

3) Crack whores.  Only we get to see these, because crack whores do not go the gynecologist, or any other kind of doctor.  The ER is their one-stop medical clearinghouse.  And without even clicking on that damn link, I can assure you I've seen worse.

Other reasons to hate the Dodgers;

Time Warner Cable signed a multi-year 8 BILLION dollar contract with them. Before one fan shows up they get 500 million a year to play with

Hanley Ramirez and Josh Beckett, although those two are so cancerous they might tear the team apart from within

They jam up traffic everywhere within 10 miles of Dodger Stadium

I just got in from a gig. All went well, we were cooking and about three songs into our last set, the power goes out.

Not just for the club, for the entire island (this is in FL). I had to drive for fifteen minutes to find a traffic light that worked. It's now almost four hours later, and not one word about it on the local news. And this is one of the coldest nights of the year down here.

RIP, Ronnie.

Saw them in Guntersville Al, in the late '70's.  Sammy Hagar was limping around  the stage in a  walking   cast.

They kicked ass.

fender or standup?

I play a 4-string Fender Zone and a 5-string Carvin.  I like old blues.  Can your singer deliver the goods?

Big Rick, the guitar player tonight.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcfdAWVo1Kg

The  bass player  in this vid   I've  played with  since he was in HS, he's really a guitar player,  and a fucking monster. He, the drummer  and I had a band together for about 5 years.

Drummer had a stroke about two years ago, not sure if or when he'll ever play again, he was  the best shuffle drummer I've ever had the pleasure of hearing or playing with. He played with Lucky Peterson for a while.  I played with the bass/guitar   player Friday night at    BB King's club down here.

Damned good friends, all.

I play a Fender Jazz Plus V.  She's been my baby for  nearly 20 years. They only made  them for about three years, Lace Sensor  (active) pickups  with bass boost and an Off position to save the battery,  rosewood neck, tobacco sunburst body.  If that bass could talk, I'd be in jail   today.

I've also got a Fender P-bass  made in China (9600 yuan I pay for that), a Yamaha double-scale fretless 4-string, a Peavy neck-through, and an  Ashbory  fretless (the little  one that uses rubber strings, sound like an upright).

What  kind of music  do you play, jc?

jazz, blues, classic rock.   Been dinking around with a new band for a few weeks.  A little weird so far.  Couple of them like 60's protest songs.  They were stupid then and they are dumb now, not to mention completely friggin' inappropriate.  Oh well, I'm playing.  Beats sitting at home.

Well, I'm not exhausted, but the adrenaline is still flowing, so I'm having a beer and a shot of American Honey (I don't drink much at gigs any more) and   typing to the imaginary people who live in my computer.

I'm  pushing the big 6-0 and can still do it,  but this equipment gets heavier every year. I'd like for Santa to bring me a Roland Cube bass amp. 120 watts, 43 lbs. Around $600. One 12" and a tweeter, with lots of buttons and knobs for shaping the sound.

I went with GK microbass.  1-12" in about a 26 lb. unit.  Spendy, but worth it.  No tweeter, but good sound.  I can put it in a bag, put the bag over my shoulder, pick up my footpedal with that hand, put my bass over my other shoulder and have a hand free for the door, keys, etc.   Literally I'm a 1-trip bass player.  Plenty for a small room.  Good direct out if there is house sound.  In bigger places I use 2.  I got 2 off of Ebay for good prices so I actually have 3 of them.  I have played outside using 3 and it worked pretty darned good.  I was surprised.

Live venues are shrinking everywhere, it seems. 120 watts? That enough for your bass?

The unit I have now is an  ancient (nearly 20 years old) Fender Combo bass cabinet with a single 15" speaker. It's 300 watts into 4 ohms, which requires another cabinet (which I've done, awesome sound), by itself,  it's 150 W. Suits the blues sound well, and I don't pop or slap like Victor Wooten.  You'll only get one sound from  a Fender bass, but it's the right one.

I've had the cops called on me several times for the volume.

Modern solid-state bass amps work really well. They're  rugged and sound well for live venues. If I  were to record, I have another cabinet    with one 12", one 8" and a tweeter, which pretty much captures everything the producer/engineer   needs.  The best I've heard so far is the Ampeg tube bass amp and  cabinet setup. That's another letter to Santa...

Oh yeah, the old  Ampeg things weren't bad at all. Fender combo is a good amp. If you're not playing with captain volumes, then the 150w might do it. 300w with a 15" plus another box I wouldn't mind having myself. Used to have an old Fender bassman (I think it was), 120w? Nice sound, but not enough. Had to give it up after melting it a couple of times. Went up to 500w with another amp and used that for live + studio. Went well with the old Jazz. Interesting that you rate the solid states over the valves. Will have to consider it. The 500w was SS, but it was a very fancy one. Have always reckoned that going big with Bass, and driving it as low as possible is the best for Bass. Opposite of guitar- small amp, driven hard.

So, based on where you appear to be located, you must have seen some great bands in their very early days.

Well,  I grew up in Alabama,  which was not exactly a hotbed  of  talent. Birmingham is gaining a reputation for music, the  country   group Alabama came from Ft. Payne, Wet Willie and Jimmy Buffet are from Mobile (as am I). I have a shoebox  full of  old ticket stubs from shows such as the Stories (Louie, Louie, Louie, Lou-I), the Dixie Dregs, Emerson, Lake and Palmer  and Yes  (go figure),  Captain Hook and His Traveling Medicine Show, and most of  the  Southern  rock groups before they broke out. Little Feat, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, Grinderswitch and Lynyrd Skynyrd all cruised through there at various times. I  roadied for Bob Seger and met Harry Chapin and his band as a student at Jacksonville State.

Florida gets its share of big name acts, too, and I've  opened  for a couple of them. Like Leon Russel, Humble Pie and Tinsley Ellis. I backed up Jimmie Vaughn once at a meet-and-greet at a local music store, which was way cool,  and sat in with Lucky Peterson, thanks to my old drummer.

I wouldn't call it a career,  but I've had a lot of fun.

I recommend tubes for  the studio and SS for  the road.  IMO, you can't have too much power for the bass.

Bet it sounds nice though. Yeah the lugging thing is a pain in the arse. Get your roadies to do it, man! That's why god made them. And drummers. To lug the bassplayer's shit.

The roadies? They're with  the groupies.

Somewhere...I   haven't seen  either of them lately.

That's a very lovely cartesian graph.

It reminds me in a way of a reimann sum (does the capital sigma ring a bell?).

But without limits there's not really any math.

I like to think that last line on the x-axis is the modulus of rupture

692 You know?

Cartesian graphs don't mean anything at all if you don't give your audience any idea about what the slope represents.

A lot of people can deduce a lot from a simple cartesian graph like this, but when it comes to winning Obama voters? They probably need to spend a few years in a labor camp, and 75% of them still won't get it.

695

Chart is a lie.

I don't know where this chart is coming from but it has to be wrong.  The sequester is a reduction in the pre-planned increase.  There is no cut.  In FY2013 the federal government will spend more than it did FY2012, sequestration or no sequestration.

Why is this concept so hard for conservatives to understand.  Stop calling it a cut, there is no damn cut.

Posted by: Andrew at March 03, 2013 05:16 AM (HS3dy)

696 Wow! It's kinda SquintyVision (TM) but if I'm reading that right, when Bush took office, federal spending was about 2.45 trillion and when Bush left eight years later, it was at 3.8, an increase of a whopping 64%! At that rate, if Bush was still running the show, spending would be at 5.1 trillion. But under Obama ...lessee, it's only at like ...what, 3.7 trillion? Quite a cut! That makes Obama ...oh, I don't know, you might call him a fiscal conservative? Which would make the conservatives ...uh ...oh, hell, now I'm just confused...
