Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour before you hit the rack as daylight savings ends tomorrow.

Meet Captain James Kirk, the commanding officer of the USS Zumwalt. Nope, no T. for Tiberius in the middle name though. Hopefully the Zumwalt is more seaworthy than some think.

Hybrid Solar Eclipse

Yo! A little celestial action is happening tomorrow morning for some of you morons. Rare hybrid solar eclipse may be visible for eastern US Sunday morning. Just remember to put on your pants when you go outside.
UPDATE: I just saw that CAC had posted it earlier today. Fuck it. I'm not changing the ONT.
UPDATE2: Commenter rickl posted this in the comments but if you put in your lat/long, you can see the historical eclipses for your location and future one. Solar Eclipse Explorer.
UPDATE3: SMOD really is a tease. Here's a list of all the upcoming near misses. NEO Earth Close Approaches. Over 30 this month.
Video Games

Brain regions can be specifically trained with video games. And to think they only did this by playing 30 minutes a day. Imagine what all day will do for you!
In comparison to the control group the video gaming group showed increases of grey matter, in which the cell bodies of the nerve cells of the brain are situated. These plasticity effects were observed in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum. These brain regions are involved in functions such as spatial navigation, memory formation, strategic planning and fine motor skills of the hands. Most interestingly, these changes were more pronounced the more desire the participants reported to play the video game.

Food Cutaways

Some pretty nifty cutaways to give you an insider's view of your food.
A No Shitter Story
This is the most embarrassing plane-pooping story ever.
I manage to peel back the leather seat top to find a rather luxurious looking commode, with a nice cherry or walnut frame. It had obviously never been used, ever. Why this moment of clarity came to me, I do not know. Perhaps it was the realization that I was going to take this toilet's virginity with a fury and savagery that was an abomination to its delicate craftsmanship and quality. I imagined some poor Italian carpenter weeping over the violently soiled remains of his once beautiful creation. The lament lasted only a second as I was quickly back to concentrating on the tiny muscle that stood between me and molten hot lava.

Meet the SR-72. Hypersonic? Cool. Mach 6? Very nice. Carries weapons? Excellent. Wait a sec. Where's the cockpit? Curse you Skynet.

Eventually the Queen is shown to have manipulated Ender or is it something else entirely?
In the book, the Queen realizes that human beings are sentient after all. In their previous encounters with humans, the bugs did not realize that humans had intelligence. To them, humans were just mindless creatures. The psychic connection between Ender and the Queen is possible because the faster-than-lightspeed communication both the humans and bugs use are similar "frequencies" and the bugs just happen to tune into Ender's channel, and so they build the "game" he plays as a guide to the final resting place of their last queen.
Not sure how the movie makes this last part out to be.

Heard through the neighborhood grapevine that a gal on the block had her dog snatched by a coyote. She has a tiny fluff-ball, and she put it in the car while she was juggling things, and the 'yot snaked it right off the seat and made tracks.
Luckily, a guy was driving by and saw this, hit his brights and the coyote dropped the dog in surprise. $3000 in vet bills and still -- maybe yes maybe no.
This whole urban wildlife thing is getting just a little too survival of the fittest around here for my taste.

That sucker's going to be ever so much fun to ride in the North Atlantic in wintertime. I expect entire ship's complements to stagger off the dock at Norfolk and immediately put in their separation papers in shaky handwriting.
That's in the Atlantic. In a healthy Pacific typhoon? Um, yeah. Go read the histories of Typhoon Cobra in 1944. The crew will be leaving the service, all right, but not in a way conducive to future civilian employment. Contemplate what happened to the crews of the _Monaghan_, the _Spence_ or the _Hull_.
Seriously, it's as though generations of naval architects and their hard-learned lessons about good seakeeping behavior had never existed. All thrown away. And for what? To provide "stealth".
"Stealth" for a ship the size of a pocket battleship. Criminy.
Between this, the LCS, the F-35, and Obama's zampolits firing everyone in the services who doesn't conform to their increasingly insane identity-politics dictates, the country had better hope it doesn't get in any truly serious wars any time in the next twenty years. Because it'll lose.

The Buick Grand National with the turbocharged 3.8 V6 was the fastest in 87 and 88, but Pontiac produced a Firebird in 1989 for the Indy pace car for that year's Indy 500
Pontiac made the very limited production Firebird TTA with a 3.8 turbo V6 that produced 300 hp and did a 4.6 second 0-60 and a 12.5 quarter mile. Top end was 162 mph
6 convertibles were made, 40 hardtops, the rest were t-tops.

When I first read the ending, I was like "OMG, here we go with the touchy feely crap..." Contrast this with how Starship Troopers was done. Rico vs Ender. Or rather, Carl vs Ender for a more apt comparison.
Sorry, if aliens almost wipe out your planet and species, there's no way you're going to try and have peaceful relations ever again. DMD their home planet and be done with them. I think if Ender were somehow a lot older and had experienced the bug attack on Earth himself, he wouldn't be feeling sorry for any bug at all. Since he was a child and had no memories of the attacks (just the newsreel footage), he had no way to know firsthand just how thin the ice was that human beings were on.

Torquewrench, if you are going to mention those tin-cans that sank during the typhoon a little more information is needed. For example USS Monoghan, Farragut class, had pumped out sea water in anticipation of refueling when the typhoon caught up with the ship. In such a top heavy condition, she capsized in the heavy seas and only six survivors were found.

Agent Orange was weird stuff.
One VN vet I used to know was in absolutely perfect health for his age. Didn't even look his age. I hadn't believed it when he first said he had been in Vietnam. I said, "Good thing you didn't get dosed with any of that Agent Orange stuff," this being the era when there were gaudy television exposes of the matter.
He said, "Dosed with it? I used to SWIM in that shit."
He filled the defoliant tanks on the sprayer planes. No particular precautions or protective equipment. Showed me photos. Working shirtless, as you might imagine of someone doing heavy labor in the local heat and humidity.
I suspect that, as with certain other chemical toxins, individual genetic susceptibilities played a big role in whether or not people became ill from exposure.
I'd love to know if he maintained his health into later life, but unfortunately he and I moved at about the same time, got distracted and lost touch. Some time I am going to have to search for his name, see if I can run down his later history.

The biggest problem with the plastic manifold was at the egr port--where hot exhaust gas was introduce3d into the plenum.
A metal piece was used to shield the opening, but after some miles they would deteriorate from the heat.
Consequently, since there was a water passage under the port, antifreeze would mix with the oil. Plus the engine would run very poorly on the fuel/coolant mix.
I saw several extreme cases where the engine hydrolocked.
Some really happy owners.

That caused VW serious suspension problems on the 2000'ish Passats. The A6's would have been similarly afflicted being mechanically identical.

Israel had “plausible deniability” due to the rebellion, but Obama blew it.
What was to be gained?
Is the JEF trying to stoke a “Hot War” between Syria and Israel?
Israel would pound them into the dust, with “Many” civilian casualties.
Is that what Obama wants?
Why?
The “Community Organizer” sucks ass as far as foreign policy…

It hit all the significant plot points of the book. Major subplot involving siblings left out (understandably). The end is the same, but they didn't convey Ender's feelings the same way during the climax as the book. It felt rushed and stilted because they had to try to fit all the changes Ender went through without actually showing enough to have a real sense of it

The Ruger SR22 stacks up very well against other non-match pistols. I don't want a Browning Buckmark or anything like that. Something strictly for plinking and teaching my wife or son how to handle pistols without worrying about the recoil too much.

All the B5 Series based cars (late-90's A4, A6, Passat) need new front suspensions every 100,000 miles. They have literally 8 balljoints each side (virtual steering geometry design) and they are not replaceable without replacing the entire arms. $1300, if you know the right mechanic.
Why I traded mine in for a Chevy. Audis cost shit-ton of money to maintain.

My head. It asplode.
Absolutely no reason for that other than arrogant, callous planned obsolescence. Perfectly possible to make just the balljoint sections themselves field-serviceable.

HULL went down during the noon hour. The wind had driven her over on her starboard side until her inclinometer went "out of sight." A sudden gust forced her beyond the point of recovery; a hill of water avalanched across her deck; she rolled over and sank.
...
Water tender McCrane, MONOGHAN, on the loss of the ship. "... the ship would take about a 70 degree roll to starboard ... We must have taken seven or eight rolls to starboard before she went over on her side..."
...
In rescuing the survivors of HULL and SPENCE, the TABERER men risked their own lives in more ways than one. At one point the ship, struggling to make 10 knots, was caught in a deep valley of a trough, and forced over on her beam in a roll of 72 degrees.

I am ashamed to admit that it took me more years than it ought to have to learn the simple lesson of eating with the flight in mind. You would think that a solid grounding in physics and physiology would have sufficed. It did not.
There was that one time. Before I learned. I tremble to recall it. Late at night prior to the early morning transoceanic departure. The macho burrito grande. With the hottest sauce the joint had. The stuff they keep stowed behind the counter that's not on the menu. And the nine beers.
This was before armed air marshals. I'm sure one of them would have shot me halfway through the flight. Justified self-defense.

Another TABBERER lifesaver, L.A. Purvis, Bos'n's Mate First Class, almost lost his life while struggling in the water with a half-drowned swimmer. Too much slack was left in his line, and a bight caught on the underwater sound dome when the DE rolled. Purvis was dragged under the ship. Realizing what had happened, he wrenched off his kapok jacket, swam under the ship, and came up on the other side. Only his presence of mind and his skill as a swimmer saved him from a fatal keel-hauling.

Take the money and run while you're still healthy as you never know what will happen next year, draft stock slips or injuries get to you. And if he does get seriously hurt next year, at least you're getting paid to sit on the sidelines

Yup... that's why I put "printing" in quotes. The Dollar, (and therefore Savings Accounts), have lost 90% of their value since Nixon's straying from The Gold Standard.
Since the eighties, most Savings Accounts have been negated by inflation/devaluation, making them "procedural" instead of "complimentary and fruitful".
I think I have that right. I've been pouring Lawnmower Beer into my pie-hole, so I may be wrong.

There was one nasty drawback in the Slant 6 if you did your own tuneups. The distributor was placed on the right hand side near under the head. If you had to replace points, it was sometimes necessary to pull the entire distributor out. It was wonderful when they went to pointless distributors, but by that time the smog regulations strangled the Slant 6 so badly that they often stalled until you warmed them up good. Even then it felt like you were towing a bus in the heavier Volare and Aspen lines

Coyotes = problem, probably.
Talking to neighbor this evening. She was doing some yard work, had just given her dog (a mid-sized wire-haired terrier of some sort) a rawhide chew stick. She heard the dog barking, walked around the corner and found a black bear cub had taken his chew stick. She gathered up the dog about the time the sow came ambling along, and that was that. Sow and cub walked off...., with the chew stick.

Everything is computerized and done with electric pumps nowadays, pretty much drive by wire
Throttles haven't had direct cable links to the throttle body in years, the ECM detects your pedal position and signals the throttle body and injectors. Steering is going more to electronic too, the computer signaling the control motors will be pretty much universal in a few years

The Mustangs since 2011 have Electronic Power Assist Steering. Do yourself a favor, get the 2012 or newer as the firmware in the 2011 does bad things if you change out the stock bushings on the front suspension. Ford doesn't recognize that there is a problem since if you replace them with stock bushings you don't have any issues, but they quietly updated the firmware in 2012. And it's burned in, no way to change it.

Yes, yes, one-thousand times yes. I'd forgotten about that, but you are correct. There was one thing that I "couldn't get to", and it was exactly that.
You are also correct about the "warm-up" time. After replacing the starter, (twice), and tuning up the car with the aptly-named "pointless" distributor, I had to let that thing run for 20min before I could rely on the gas pedal, let alone the heater.
That thing used to run in the Northeast Ohio Winter like a ..., well, like a Scamp. After that replacement, I'd wondered what happened.
The frame was the downfall of my particular automobile. It warped and rusted like no-one's business. By "the end", it had pushed its way through the trunk. The elderly leaf springs and poor framework had allowed the rear-end to show itself and it was all over.
I replaced the springs, to no avail. That frame was coming through the trunk, no matter what I did. The body was rusted, but patchable. The frame, on the other hand, failed in the rear-end first.
Sad note. I really enjoyed that car.

Then you have the computerized transmissions/transaxles, traction control, even computerized shocks in upper end German and Japanese cars.
One thing that makes me laugh when I see a kid with modifications to a new car like the coffee can mufflers and 22 inch wheels is that they have no clue how that throws off the car's factory computer settings. Oversized wheels throw off traction control, the transmission, suspension, and even engine contol modules not to mention the speedometer

Looks like 3P in the 40kv range shorting across to the 4kv'ish feed that goes to the transformers that feed individual houses.
There was a similar video years ago at Mike Holt's electrician site. Some lineman in a bucket truck fucked up and drove the bucket arm too far and shit went sideways real quick with 40kv going down the 4kv lines to the household transformers.
There was one nearby house that had sparks'n shit flying out of aluminum siding and soffits.
The medium voltage stuff like 4kv can be insulated, but at high voltages the wires run bare with no "insulation" other than physical distance separating them

Well, they create vacuum, more than "need" it. Piston goes down on the intake stroke, a partial vacuum is created, and air (+/-fuel) rushes in. Gasoline engines typically have a fairly high intake manifold vacuum, because the throttle plate restricts incoming air. Diesels have no throttle plate, and manifold vacuum is extremely low. And a turbo diesel may be under positive pressure throughout the intake tract; just a little less positive in a cylinder doing its intake stroke.

What was funny in the movie Duel was Dennis Weaver's Valiant trying to break 100 in the open desert, and the car getting squirrelly even on a straight stretch. It's bad enough that you can't outrun an ancient Pete semi, but when you can't outhandle one it's not a fine machine you have there.
Thing was, the Pete's performance was exaggerated, but the Valiant's was pretty much how they ran and handled
Even then, they were powerhouses compared to the Volare/Aspen models with the Slant 6. I'm surprised that they don't make many "Worst Car" lists.

Rather predictable. In one scene, the Enterprise plunges down to earth, through clouds ... and I started counting down 3 seconds on a hand - and surprise, surprise, the Enterprise rises out of the clouds, utterly safe.
Posted by: ConservativeMonster at November 02, 2013 09:38 PM (0wHyk)
True enough. At W.O.T., a gasoline engine will have very little vacuum, comparable to a Diesel. Peak vacuum would occur on closed-throttle deceleration from high RPM.
The presence of the throttle plate is one of the reasons why gasoline engines are less efficient than Diesels, although the gap is narrowing. Pumping losses.

NOT an A/C expert by any stretch of the imagination, but: Freon 12 would likely be incompatible with the "ester oil" used with HCFC134a refrigerant. I know they warn about incompatibility going the other way. Also the pressure switches and temp sensors in the system are chosen to match the performance characteristics of the 134a, and you would not get the best possible performance out of the Freon by using them.

A valve stuck shut could eat the cam lobe, or bend a push rod; seen that happen. A valve stuck open just clatters or snaps. Depends a lot upon engine design what results. I have a Studebaker V8 on the go right now with one or two sticky valves in the right bank. Every so often, there's a loud snap as one of the sticky ones belatedly closes at idle. But the problem is going away; less each time the engine is started and warmed up. Oil is working its way through the guides again, after a 30-odd year idle period.

I stick a little in the cylinders of harley motors that sat for a few years, let it hang out for a bit, then crank it over with no plugs to get everything coated in there, then add another small squirt and stick the plugs in and let the compression push it through the rings. Sometimes they get surface rust on the rings and they get a little sticky in the ring grooves. That marvel mystery oil is the shit, the motors always fire up nice.

Sorry, took a break to discuss mounting a scope on a Type 30 Arisaka.
Yes, the last one was an Aries K station wagon, the second of the two types of cars I owned after swearing that I never would (the first being a minivan, incidentally also a FWD Dodge, bought a few years prior to the Aries). As it turns out I made out big on the Aries, it was a POS that I paid $125 for and had about $850 in before totaling it. The insurance company gave me $1300 for it. The van went to my daughter in FL, she sold it after driving it for a few years and AFAIK it is still roaming the north Florida highways and byways.
