It occurred to me as the fiscal quarter draws to a close that I've never talked about Malaysia on the ONT.
Which is a shame because it truly is a wonderful country - blessed with beautiful landscapes, friendly people and abundant resources, as well an enlightened moderate Muslim government.
With borders stretching from Thailand all the way down to Indonesia its 127,000 sq. miles encompass both rain forest-covered mountains and beautiful pristine beaches. Lifestyle-wise it offers the best of relaxed tropical living along with the fast paced bustle of the city life and rapidly expanding industry in the Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru regions.
And with unrestrictive labor laws, flexible regulation and a GDP growing an average 6.5% for almost 50 years it's quickly become the go-to location for business investment in Asia.
Culturally Malaysia is a boiling melting-pot of races and religions where most ethnic groups live together in peace and harmony under a modern sharia-influenced legal system. And thanks to this ethnic diversity it enjoys an amazing array of art and crafts from traditional batik to modern textiles and batik as well as hundreds of colorful festivals where the locals enthusiastically pray and recite verses.
For foodies it's a gastronomical paradise with cuisine influenced by the Arab, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Javanese, and Somalian cultures. And socially the Malaysians are a very relaxed and friendly people and open to visitors of most major religions.
While officially a Muslim state Malaysia seems to have found a unique middle way in being true to Islam while guaranteeing some rights to religious minorities - and the Malaysian national motto 'Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu' ("Unity Is Strength" ) reflects these values. The esteemed Prime Minister Najib Alibaba Razak explains their success this way:
"We have always taken the position that Islam is an integral part of public policy in Malaysia. By doing so, we have taken the wind from the sails of the extremists. There is no contradiction between being moderate and being Muslim,"
..."Being moderate, taking the middle path, is fundamental to Islam. It is one of the pillars of Islam. Muslims have rights, but it's also enshrined in the teachings of Islam to safeguard non-Muslims in your midst. It's wrong for Muslims to even be unkind to non-Muslims. We would no more harm a non-believer than kill a fly without cause."
With beaches, culture, a growing economy, and a harmonious, moderate Islamic society Malaysia truly is the the jewel of Asia.
And with the monsoon rains almost over why not book your journey to Malaysia now!

North Korea Getting All Frisky - What's the Deal?
They've declared the 1953 ceasefire invalidated and cut the direct hot line to Seoul. And then you have this:
North Korea has put many combat units on alert and mobile ballistic missiles have been seen being moved to firing positions. This is apparently yet another response to the new sanctions and China becoming openly hostile to the North Korean leadership. These latest moves are apparently in preparation for the end of scheduled South Korea-U.S. military training activities (on April 30 th ) that North Korea has always protested as "provocative" and this year has declared as a cause for a war. This annual training exercise began March 1 st . These joint exercises have been going on for decades, but North Korea insists they are rehearsals for an invasion of North Korea. South Korea has said it would not just retaliate if North Korea fired on them again (as has happened many times before, especially since 2010). This time South Korea says it will hit back a lot harder.
Plus even China is getting fed up with Norks.
While China has officially joined the many nations backing sanctions against North Korea, it has not cut off trade (China is North Korea's largest, by far, trading partner) or aid. ...Inside China, public opinion, despite decades of pro-North Korea propaganda, has turned against North Korea. More ominously (for North Korea), censors and state controlled media are not hiding this anger. When the Chinese want to make a big policy change, they usually make a big show of popular support for the shift.
And why would the North Koreans do all this? Well Galrahn at Information Dissemination says it's their way of putting the unpredictability back into North Korean unpredictability. And a way to stealthily declare war while still retaining deniability.
My sense is North Korea is looking for a small skirmish, some kind of clash that raises tension on the security situation, but only a limited battle not a full war. After 2010 it is unclear if they can maintain escalation control though, which may explain why they are message traffic heavy to the locals. The key here is that North Korea wants to change the dynamics of the security situation for the purposes of negotiation, because apparently they have calculated the security situation is too comfortable for everyone else for security to be used in negotiation as a concession. If that is truly the case, then if a skirmish or something breaks out North Korea would need to get hit harder than they hit the South in order to keep the security situation from being a concession in negotiation, but that isn't easy to do unless we feel you have control over escalation and deescalation of the situation.
...I do not believe North Korea is looking for a major war, but I do think the North is looking for an incident. From their point of view, they have honored every legal requirement regarding any direct attack against any target beginning March 11, 2013 is not some random act of violence. That is what really bothers me, basically North Korea has positioned their nation to be legally at war on purpose, but the specific purpose is yet to be revealed.
Oh and guess what - we have an new inexperienced retard-American Secretary of Defense, no carriers in the Pacific, and our top Admiral says climate change is the real threat in the area. Good times, good times.
Good Swordsmen Are Hard to Find
And that may drive Saudi Arabia to switch to firing squads.
A joint Saudi committee composed of representatives of the ministries of interior, justice and health is mulling the replacement of beheading with firing squads for capital sentences due to shortages in government swordsmen, Saudi daily Al-Youm reported on Sunday.
..."This solution seems practical, especially in light of shortages in official swordsmen or their belated arrival to execution yards in some incidents; the aim is to avoid interruption of the regularly-taken security arrangements," the committee said in a statement.
News You Can Use: Zombie Deterring Perfume
Cause if you stop smelling like sweet, sweet delicious living brains, the Z's will stop being interested.
The perfume works by masking your natural human scent - that "un-undeadness," if you will - with a veil of deep earthy notes. like dried leaves, mushrooms, mildew and moss. Mmmm. And of course, there are different versions for Him and for Her.
...Demeter also makes fragrances that smell like Play-Doh, Clean Windows, Bourbon, and Holy Water. No scent is off-limits, so the smell of barely-dead bodies shouldn't seem all that surprising.
Pixar's 22 Rules of Storytelling
1. You admire a character for trying more than for their successes.2. You gotta keep in mind what's interesting to you as an audience, not what's fun to do as a writer. They can be very different.
3. Trying for theme is important, but you won't see what the story is actually about til you're at the end of it. Now rewrite.
4. Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___.
...
9. When you're stuck, make a list of what WOULDN'T happen next. Lots of times the material to get you unstuck will show up.
Well PSA has some in stock as of this moment - 50rds for $14.99.
Ammo is getting hard to find at any price. I stopped in a local range last week and they had zero .45 ammo of any kind. And no pistol primers either. And no guarantee of getting any more in the next month or two. The guy at the counter advised rationing any .45 shooting until things loosen up.
Well now's your chance to lease a Porsche 911 for two years for only $1100/month. Which is cheap when you consider that a 911's sticker price is almost $100K.
And since I've recently come into some financial good fortune, I'm quite tempted.

--Last term I had a Malaysian chick in my class and she was hot. That's but a sample of one, and not as hot as the chicks from Brazil, Venezuela, Sri Lanka, or Hong Kong who had been in my classes before (or the Vietnamese chick I dated). Unlikely.
NoKo is the equivalent of mafioso owning an asian country. They aren't messianic, true beliver, die hard tards.
It is for all intents and purposes it's a criminal enterprise.
They like creating incidents because SoKo and the US won't push back overtly. Plus China is getting tired of their shit despite possibility of having a flood of NoKo refugees stream over their border.
Something will blow up. Lots of sound and fury. Cash and goods will be sent and that's about it.

The US and South Korea have been cutting deals with the Norks for decades. So far it has resulted in more North Koreans starving to death or eating their children. Not to mention all those South Korean sailors who were killed when the Norks sank their ship. The PRC is already dealing with waves of Nork refugees.
So there comes a time when everyone is sick of the mad dog of Pyongyang. I think we are at that time but doubt Gaylord Focker thinks so. So welcome to the Korean Police Action the Sequel as everyone misses their cues and plunges Asia into hell.

If a trebuchet was set to hurl a payload of, say, 100 lb, but was instead loaded with only 20 lb (for the payload- the bucket still filled the same) would the projectile actually travel 5x as far, or would it hit some outer limit first?

Heh thanks! I'm afraid I'm too proud to beg, especially for something that is a luxury. The truth is that I'm not hurting for cash; I just don't want to spend the money this month. There's another class in May, so I'll try to adjust my schedule to make that one instead.

I'll say no way.
The distance the payload travels is determined by the velocity it reaches coming off the trebuchet arm/sling, right? But the trebuchet is accelerating not just the 100 lb/20 lb payload, but all the mass of the trebuchet arm, bucket etc. Unless the payload is an enormous fraction of that entire mechanism, which it can't be, the speed of the payload is unlikely to change very much on release.
Half-assed guess, anyway.

Intuitively, no. I also lack the physics skilz (I can do the math, just short on the physics).
I imagine the 20 lb. payload travelling quite a bit higher than the 100 lb. rock.
So maybe, the 20 lb. rock does travel 5x the distance, only more in the vertical; not necessarily farther horizontally

That`s a joke right?
Here`s from an article by MggPillai (decd) journalist:
Dato’ Seri Najib kicked the ball first to insist to insist none should openly debate if Muslims could slander the followers of other religions, and promised to investigate the site, “Malaysia Today”.
But what Raja Petra complains of is true. Non-Malays living in the
vicinity of mosques in Kuala Lumpur hear this call to arms against the
non-Muslims through high-pitches megaphones often enough to be dismissed
as untrue. I suspect Dr Yusof is annoyed a Muslim has spilled the
beans; if a non-Muslim had done so, he could be ignored.

Energy imparted to the projectile would be the same, I think. Kinetic energy is proportional to velocity squared. The vertical velocity is proportional to the flight time (namely time=twice that component divided by gravity acceleration). Flight time times horizontal velocity gives distance. Since flight time increase by the square root of 5, and horizontal velocity does as well. you get 5x the range. In theory. I think. High school physics has been a while.
Obviously for some situations, drag is going to shorten your range (as the projectile neither goes as high or horizontally fast as it does in theory), and for large amounts of energy, the curvature of the earth becomes a factor.

The fact that your nick is taken from one of my favorite bizarro stories featured here, about the weird hippie freak who lurked at the bottom of porta-johns because...he was into women's excretions.
Only someone who was in it for realz would pick that name and stick with it.

One of the most striking videos that I viewed in the weeks after the Japan Earthquake was the I-Phone vid showing a home computer in what appears to be someone's ground floor home/office and the monitor is showing the alert system displaying a map of japan with color coded areas along the coast in red and orange and and a BIG red dot off the coast with concentric rings radiating outward and a soft computer gen'd female voice calmly doing this...."countdown".
What was the most awesome thing to me and I just wish I could have saved at least This One to my files (SERIOUS!! like a 20 + second heads-up!), was when the countdown reached "0" the room where this vid was being shot started to shake apart with stuff falling off shelfs and such. Even better for the effect was a window looking out onto what seemed like a street scene near a port with the multitudes of buildings in the background shaking with the various overhead powerlines dancing the dance and people frozen in their tracks just trying to remain upright. What amazes me most was that whoever with the I-phone just stayed there recording all of this.
Wish I could find that one again

Funny, though, how so many cutting-edge rockers become softy MOR "meep-meep" machines in their 40s and beyond. Phil Collins is (unfortunately) a prime example. He had TONS of edge in his music in 1982... and was turned into practically a music-making teddy bear by 1994. Sad.

My tastes are all over the map, but I do love me some late 70's and early 80's music. P-Rock, Metal, any Wave, it is all fine by me.

Seriously though...Peter Gabriel 3 is one of the all-time great postpunk albums, and all the more amazing given that it comes from someone who was a musical veteran basically learning how to reinvent himself. Also, it more or less created the drum sound of the '80s (for better or worse), the cymbal-less gated reverb "THUD-THUD" heard on the first track "Intruder" (and played by former band-mate Phil Collins).

Actually the one from that album (PG3) that did it for me was "Family Snapshot." I still get blown away by the originality of that one...completely subverts your expectations of what it's going to be about as you listen to it unfold, and then about a minute in it turns into the darkest fucking thing imaginable....and yet still beautiful, sad, tragically moving.
Listen, folks, this album is basically flawless. It ends with one of the three or four greatest protest songs ever recorded as well: "Biko."

First LP album I ever bought, with Christmas money, in 1983. Loved to play it (and watch the Atlantic label go round and round) on my also-then-brand-new Technics SLB-200 belt-drive turntable (which actually still works).

Nothing like getting your hands on a rare bird that you've been chasing for years. How's the neck carve on that thing? I have always wondered what those had for neck carves.
Bonus - You don't have to do a fret job for a while.
Posted by: garrett at March 12, 2013 12:19 AM (D5hLZ)
The neck is killer, very comfy and fast. It has a 1 9/16 nut width, but doesn't feel like a small neck. I like the 50's style necks, but this one don't seem annoyingly small, probably along the lines of the '61 LP/SG. Its a very early Batch 1, probably one of the first 15 made.. Yeah I'm happy it was a refret, even better was that they used that dimarzio jumbo wire. Had it been refretted with the low wides I would have yanked them. That was one of the reasons it took so long for me to get one. I wanted an unmolested one with no mods, and they figure only about 30 or so of these are left unmolested, but I wanted a refretted one so I could put bigger frets in if it didn't already have them. It was a tall order.
Even though I'm a metal head, I didn't want one that belonged to a metal head. lol

I still remember how I felt the first time I listened to the song, thinking it was going to be about one thing, and then I heard Gabriel "and the Governor's car is not far behind..." and realize oh shit this is about something else entirely. Superbly executed narrative drama.

The only one of those whose names I would have recognized in 1983 was Stray Cats, and maybe Elvis Costello (but I couldn't have named a song by him then). And I admit it: by the spring of 1984, I had purchased and enjoyed, and still do enjoy, REM's Reckoning and U2's War.
My music renaissance-- and realizing I had a long, long way to go and a lot of money to spend before realizing my ideal record collection-- started when I made a (really, really bad) attempting at DJing at Long Beach City College's student radio station, KLBC. I finally got to hear some of the stuff I had been reading about.

1.) Murmur is IMO the single greatest debut album of all time, and I speak as a guy who knows what the fuck he's talking about in terms of music history.
2.) War is okay. Half-crap, but the good half doesn't suck just because U2 subsequently went on to become overblown stadium rock.
3.) Of the albums you listed, I adore What Makes A Man Start Fires (I am a FREAK for the Minutemen), like Hootenanny (fun stuff, but it ain't no Let It Be), enjoy the Minor Threat LP (all 15 minutes of it!), and think Punch The Clock is underrated but not Elvis' best work. Also, you forgot the following great LPs: Power, Corruption & Lies (New Order's best long-player), Porcupine (a great Echo & The Bunnymen record, home of "The Cutter" and "Heads Will Roll"), and a bunch of others.

Meh, a 16 minute version of a static instrumental? Give me Brian Eno, plz.
I'm not a fan of Low-Life, with the exception of "The Perfect Kiss" (which, as you said, is 10,000 times better in its lengthy 12" single version) and "Sooner Than You Think." Really I think New Order's only great LP was Power, Corruption & Lies, though every record they did before Republic had some great album-only stuff on it. (The best ones? "Vanishing Point" from Technique, "Broken Promise" and "All Day Long" from Brotherhood, "Sooner Than You Think" from Low Life, "Age Of Consent," "Your Silent Face," and "Leave Me Alone" from PC&L. Movement is kind of a mess, but a fascinating mess.)
They were, needless to say, a nonpareil singles group. In particular the early stuff (1980-1983), from when they still had a bit of the Joy Division sound, is fascinating.

I admit I had a policy back then: I'd buy singles or albums, but NOT remix EPs unless I was absolutely batshit crazy about the song. I felt like I had to budget my meager earnings somewhere, and that was where I set the line, right or wrong. So I missed a lot of "full" versions of 1980s songs.
My big exception was "The Love Cats" by The Cure; they could have made a three-hour-long version of that one song, and I probably still would have loved every second of it.

Okay, here we go. Yes, this is a real Q, and I don't have the math or physics background to know.
If a trebuchet was set to hurl a payload of, say, 100 lb, but was instead loaded with only 20 lb (for the payload- the bucket still filled the same) would the projectile actually travel 5x as far, or would it hit some outer limit first?

you don't have enough info to answer the question. If you want to assume no atmosphere, no friction, etc., you can provide an answer, but it is effectively meaningless in the real world.
Also, it a resultant vector question. You compare a horizontal item to a vertical item. Gravity is acting on the object (vertical). Usually you assume the gravity part of the equation will make the object strike the ground and thereby end the time of flight. So, you need to be able to plot the flight path to get any sensible answer. Since I don't know jack shit about the flight path of an object leaving I trebuchet, I have to say you lack info to answer the question.

I loved "In the Name of Love" and bought the album with hard-earned money from my first job... then listened to it. I guess I was expecting too much of a War clone, because I almost immediately reconditioned it as a frisbee when it was finished. I thought it was droning, way too long, boring, and lacking in any real "rock" feel.
It wasn't until years later, hearing it played in its entirely on Joe Benson's "The Seventh Day" show on KLOS, when I realized what a wonderful album it was. It wasn't meant to be another rocker... at least, a lot of the songs on it weren't. I just sort of grew into it. My tastes definitely changed somewhere between 1984 and 1994, but I would have to go on for three hours to explain exactly how.

I got to this late, so I figured it had probably been dealt with already -- but, seriously, it doesn't work with a trebuchet. Essentially, a trebuchet is a lever with a hinge and a heavy weight on the short end. The escape speed of the projectile is based on how fast the heavy weight drops, not the weight of the projectile.
There are other types of catapults that might have interesting answers, but I'm just not seeing it with this one.

Half of The Unforgettable Fire is among U2's best material. Half of it is unforgivable shit. "4th Of July," "Promenade," "MLK," and the interminable "Elvis Presley And America" are where you got a terrifying portent of what lay in the future for that band.
On the other hand, "A Sort Of Homecoming?'' That's the single greatest piece of music U2 ever recorded. Nothing comes close. Perfect in every way: great music, great Eno production, lovely poetic lyrics, and one of the finest vocal performances Bono ever pulled off. "Bad" actually might be THE finest singing he ever did, come to think of it.
I'm one of those weird postpunk freaks who insists that U2 never really did a better record than their debut, Boy. All the elements of their later stardom...it was all there from the start, on that LP. "An Cat Dubh" + "Out Of Control" + "The Electric Co." = everything that would later be associated with "classic" U2.

Sad.

They found out that they could actually make some money. Most of those bands were in debt to their record companies, and there is one thing that the record companies want, and that is their money. So the bands put those albums out, they get a shit ton of airplay, sell like crazy, and go out on huge concert tours. Next thing they know, they are getting crazy hot model scamper and living the high life. After years of seeing everyone else make money, they sure as hell now want to make their own.
If you now notice, most of the older bands are going back to the studio and re-recording their songs for "Greatest Hits" compilations. They probably aren't getting anything from sales of their older stuff because they sold their catalog years earlier. The problem they run into is that can't recreate the sound from 25 years ago, so the songs don't sound the same.

I disagree with you on the Presley song, but the others you're probably right about; I don't hear anything in my memory when you mention those titles from The Unforgettable Fire. And you're right, there was some grandiose stuff there that previewed Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, and so on. I wouldn't say I love everything on it, but I wish I still had that copy of the LP I bought back in 1984. I might have rediscovered the good stuff on there sooner. :-)

Please. It's 1:30AM. This is late-night music by any definition. It's also what would go on to be the future of music, recorded in 1986. It STILL sounds modern, mostly because every trick on this record was later assimilated by Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Muse, Tortoise, every post-rock group in the world, etc. It's unmitigated beauty, sonic genius, flawless from stem to stern. If you can listen to the first three songs and say "this is shit" then hey, horses for courses. But I can think of few records that inspire me more than The Colour Of Spring by Talk Talk, which is what this is.

Big Country was the ultimate in Scottish folk-metal. Plus it was only in the last few years how much I've noticed how some of it (like Harvest Home) sounds almost like American country music pumped up with mindbending steroids.

Not surprising since the Scots are the ones that settled in the Appalachians where all the bluegrass and good country music comes from.

Ah. Well I didn't mind Ratt too much, but in general alot of the stuff was just frigging poser crap. The shitty thing was that a lot of the bands had good guitar players, but the songs were just too bubble gum. Dokken became brutal for that. There was one album where every last frigging song was about a chick. Then you had the cherry pie guys, and the up all night sleep all day guys, and the poison weirdos, etc. I would rather listen to savatage or manowar, or Accept, or any real metal bands who had granite man cards, not ones made out of a chick's scarf.

4 years of Bush and GOP control of both houses convinced people that elections don't matter. 2 years of talk about how we were just going to have to live with Obamacare even if the GOP won in 2012 convinced people that elections don't matter. The bright shining jewel of the Bush presidency, chief justice roberts convinced people that elections don't matter. Every time the debt limit or a CR comes up and we're told that either party has to do the exact same thing convinces people that elections don't matter. And yes, Boehner repeatedly bringing up legislation that passes on democrat votes when most house gopers consider it too toxic to touch convinces people that elections don't matter.
There is nothing more than a superficial argument over how fast we want to approach the wall, that DC is committed to national suicide is not.

Actually, I've pretty much entirely repudiated the music I listened to when I was 13. The only exception is for Collins-era Genesis, which I got into back before I become a hardcore muso, and actually spent several years ritually rejecting as uncool before I finally realized that fuck it, good melody and songwriting matters more than style.

I always loved Paul's early guitars and have bought so many through the years that it is insane. I'll never forget how crestfallen I was when Jimmy D'Aquisto bagged on my Bonnie Pink Signature. A guitar that Al DiMeola molested before I ever got to touch her!
As to the vintage, the best way to find the good stuff is through gumshoe type dilligence. There's still a ton of undiscovered stuff out there. You just need to approach it the way you did in the 70's and early 80's.
Let 90% of the dealers buy and sell the same 60% of the guitars.
I'm happy chasing the guitars of the rural communities and turning up the occasional gem, at this point. It helps that I was buying everything I could find and afford from 1988 - 1996 while I traveled the B roads of the US and brokering them to dealers on both coasts. Built up a lot of trust and credibility while learning the ropes and tricks.

When I was 13 I was playing drums along with the guitar. I was starting to gravitate toward the drums more, but then I heard the Black sabbath paranoid album. I heard the opening power chords to iron man and that was it. I went full steam ahead on guitar, and stayed with metal my whole life. Curious thing though, I didn't really stick with sabbath, and didn't listen to them again until Dio was singing for them.

It's two years removed from the album you just finished, but holy shit the musical evolution there...amazing. You will hear the sound of a thousand modern groups in its arranging. And remember this was put out in 1988(!) by a rock group that originally began life as a UK one-hit wonder.
Talk Talk are the greatest hidden find of the 1980s, musically. Nobody except musos knows about them. But musos treasure them like a cherished secret. It's easy to hear why.

Huh. Seems like we're opposite ends of the spectrum with Soft Machine, then. I adore that first album, like the second one nearly as much, and rapidly lose interest once they begin to push Robert Wyatt out of the band and he stops singing. Love the live stuff from 1967-1970, but in terms of their studio work I'm off the boat after Third.
I know a lot of people can't stand his voice. I happen to like it a lot. It's weirdly compelling: a hoarse countertenor (?!?).

yeah thats how I got the ones I have. I never really went through dealers. I know who they are, but never needed them. 1988-1996 was a good time to buy. I could kick myself in the ass for all the frigging gold tops and LP customs I passed up for a few grand in the late 90's. I'm a die hard V player though, so back then I wasn't really focused on the les pauls. I did eventually end up with a routed early 57 gold top and a routed 55 custom for a good price, but not as cheap as I could have had them. It was in the early 2000's, so they were still somewhat cheap.

yeah well I wanted players, ones that didn't cost a shitload but still had the shit going for them. Kinda like that V. I have no use for P-90's really, so it made sense to get a routed guitar. Again, I wanted original finishes, and original parts but at least refretted with bigger frets and humbuckers. They both had real PAFs in them, so that was a bonus.

Did you go through a phase like I did in high school, where you tried to convince yourself that "Atom Heart Mother" and the studio disc of Ummagumma WASN'T unutterable bullshit? Yeah, you outgrow that.
Oddly enough though, the only Floyd I have time for anymore other than Wish You Were Here are live concerts from that early (1969-1971) period. You have to be in the right frame of mind for it (it's definitely 'background' music to work or read to), but if you are it works wonderfully.

These guys were less than honest. They would have sold it as an original PAF guitar. I can't stand to see something like that happen to a minty 57 LP. I am all about the preservation of the prime examples.

That's a fantastic live record (my only complaint, natch, is that the performance of "Perfectly Still" is pretty half-assed), but I actually think I prefer the all-instrumental Noisette CD release. The one that "Facelift" was excerpted from for the Third LP. I know that contradicts what I said earlier about preferring the vocal stuff, but it's just so perfectly executed, and I love the live instrumental "Moon In June" even though it's too short.

I used "people" in responding to your comment in which you similarly referred to "people". DC's refusal to live within its means is the problem. You may feel there is some meaningful distinction in running quarter or half trillion dollar deficits rather than trillion and a half, but I will maintain the only difference is the rate at which we arrive at the inevitable collapse. As the end state is my primary concern, the distinction is of no value to me. In any case the GOP has, as a whole, demonstrated an utter refusal to act on the problem, and will reliably provide votes to democrat "keep the party going" plans whenever required.
By all means, brag about the sequester. But start by calculating whether DC wil spend more money this year than last, or less.
I say the GOP is untrustworthy. And most of the people who insist that things will be better if only they were in power, I am quite sure, will also insist that we can't push them too far (which will always be far short of balancing the budget and most of the time short of real year over year cuts) lest they be replaced in the next election.
It doesn't really matter now anyway. We will certainly pass the point where "non-discretionary" spending exceeds DC's revenues by an amount we will obviously not grow out of before the next round of elections. When that happens, the most easily scuttled spending is interest payments on the debt, a fact holders of that debt will understand. And they will try to get out while they can. And then the shitstorm. And that's assuming the same idiocy being done in Japan, China, or Europe doesn't trigger a global dislocation first.

Oh I definitely know what you mean. Can barely tolerate The Wall (though I have to take my cap off to its awesome production values...it's assembled like a Swiss watch, all the gears 'n springs perfectly calibrated). In fact, most of the post Meddle stuff leaves me cold except for Wish You Were Here and the songs "Us And Them" and "Dogs."
As for the Syd era? Ennnh. It's good. "Great," even. But Piper's best moment is a band-written instrumental ("Interstellar Overdrive," woo...), and the only other songs on that LP that live up to the great '67 singles are "Astronomy Domine" and, as you mentioned, "Bike." All that Tolkien/I-Ching/Scarecrow stuff is just sorta tofu-like to me.
Everybody who's a "serious" Pink Floyd fan is supposed to hate it, but I honestly think that the non-album singles "It Would Be So Nice" and "Point Me At The Sky" are their great lost songs from that early period. Fuck it, they're poppy...so what of it?

we are in a tough spot. I don't want to make light of it. Nor do I want to say that we should just capitulate because we are in a tough spot. Nor do I want to say that we shouldn't make allies when necessary -- after all propping up Stalin if needed to beat Hitler was probably the right call -- even if it completely sucked.
That said, I hear you. This argument always reminds me of something -- and I think you clearly get it where some others do not -- in previous decades we treated POWs with respect and care -- while at the same time we executed traitors. I ended up chasing parts around all day -- toilets are down to 1.28 gallons per flush, but the base unit is 1.6. And the manufacturers have taken to packaging base and tank together in one box. In addition, I'm looking at the area behind the tank that hasn't been repainted since the 50s. So I sanded it tonight and I'll repaint the stupid thing tomorrow morning, and try the tank I got tomorrow afternoon. The good news is the BH is still safely in Atlanta.

Why does that make U2's UTTERLY ANTHEMIC Streets massively, unequivocally, worse than A Sort of Homecoming, as you so decidedly assert?
Ah fuck, you can't untangle that fucking muso pretzel of yours without breaking your sacred muso vow not to respond to me, can you?

And at the same time I have great respect for a bunch of folks that do what I will not. I have worked around the local assembly people enough to know that they are working for a couple bux/hour.
They go to a shitload of meetings, read tons of BS to prep for the meetings, and spend gobs of hours on the phone with dumbshits who think they are supposed to be able move mountains (or change Federal law, force unions to be reasonable, print their own money, or other totally impossible acts).
They are putting in ridiculous hours for crap pay and putting up with massive shit to do it. And, they have to run for office to get the job -- which means they have to pay off the media.
So, I respect their service. I just don't trust them.

It occurred to me the other day that the founders did not want to make it quite so hard to keep up with all the players -- originally you just voted for your State officials and your congresscritter -- those folks voted in the Senate and the Prez.
Now, you have to keep up with all of them and worry about whether or not you are voting for a crook at every friggin' level. Impossible job not to screw it up sooner or later.

Yes, the ultimate problem is that the voters are irresponsible fools. But as long as the GOP intends to appeal to them rather than present the hard reality of the situation, they can be expected to maintain the basic course the democrats want. So my request for a second, opposition party, remains.
Even if it is just a dream.

It's worse than that. It's all limits in the rate of DC growth bullshit with the assumption that some legislative tweaks will magically give us reliable, constant growth in the real economy. To the tune of 5% annually for a decade, from what I've read. Feel free to check when we last had 5% GDP growth and how long it lasted (it's been a while). And the last time it lasted for a full decade (hint: first isolate all those times we had a full decade without recession. It's approximately never). Oh and this will happen in spite of the 2% tax hike everyone got this year. And the full implementation of Obamacare.
Hollowpoint, I get the point you (and ace and others) make about impossibility. But you're talking about impossibility in terms of political will. I am concerned with impossibility in terms of mathematics. Eventually that conflict is going to be resolved, and mathematics does not give a shit about what anyone wants. Which probably won't sway you. I just mean to explain my despair.

You ain't just a-whistlin' -- I don't know if you heard about San Francisco, a leader in the low-flow area.....their sewer lines actually have stretches that are hollowed-out redwood logs 150 years old......they went completely low-flow some years back to "save the bay".
They now have to dump a million gallons of bleach through their system every year in order to keep the lines from clogging.
It might be just me, but doing extra gallons of water seems better than occasional bleach flushes.....but I'm not an environmentalist.

This would cut down on partisanship, he thinks.
I had to go look up the book on Amazon to make sure it was real. It is. The guy has an endowed chair at IU and is apparently insane. Nice use of my tax money.
How do 2 presidents occupy 1 White House? How do you FORCE them to work together? Who is the Commander-in-Chief? Who is the Head of State for foreign affairs? How in the hell would this cut down on partisanship?
