Well, okay, but really it isn't US who are going after those folks, it is God, who is a lot bigger and has a bit more pull.
The point being that we all sin in one fashion or another, and our sins do affect others in ways we might not even understand. It may not be entirely clear who is being hurt by premarital sex, but if one looks at the entirety of the issue, then it is clear that both men and women are hurt by it, because it denies the basic truth of the marriage of a man and a woman. The same it true for adultery, although the pain is pretty obvious there. Homosexuality does the same thing--it denies the integrity of marriage and of creation (male and female He created them....).
Laws do not make things right between God and people, nor between people, and no law against homosexuality or premarital or extramarital sex is going to get anyone into heaven.

1) Pre- and extra-marital sex is considered a very big, bad deal among conservative Christians, at least the ones I know. It is certainly a lot more immediate problem than homosexuality.
2) No one is telling us that sex out of wedlock is just who they are and we have to accept them and celebrate their urges.
3) Homosexuality is a bigger deviation from the creation norm (monogamous sex within marriage) than is a couple who plant their corn before building their fences, just as infidelity is a graver sin than pre-marital sex, and so has to be dealt with in a different manner.

I am: 1.) an evangelical Christian; 2.) Personally, quite socially conservative. To the point where it gets me involved in awkward conversations at cocktail parties because I'm that guy who really insists on making the case that gay marriage might actually be bad for the long-term fabric of society, and we're all blinding ourselves to it.
However, that doesn't make me disdain people like this Cliff Kincaid any less. He is a person who, like certain Christian conservatives, lacks any sort of Constitutional grounding and merely thinks of the levers of government as a tool for forcibly installing HIS OWN preferred vision of society, unrestrained by any neutral, secular/philosophical governing principles. Which is antithetical to what the Founders believed in, and what they put into the Constitution -- a document which, almost uniquely among national charters, was tailor-made to include enough 'space' for changing attitudes and times and mores.
I have no more in common with someone like Kincaid, who would happily pass a national law criminalizing gayness, than I do with the worst ultra-Leftist turd in the country, regardless of what party he claims to belong to. It has nothing to do with his purported Christian faith, and everything to do with his attempts to turn a democratic republic into a theocratic Society of Virtue using the power of the State.

Do I want a person with command hallucinations and homicidal ideation to have a weapon to kill? NO. But I understand telling someone you can't have a gun will not stop them from obtaining a gun. A person with mental illness and $100 can buy a gun on the street. No law will stop them. I would rather work with them, develop a safety plan, bring in family, medicate and if needed have a emergency detention. I will never take 2nd amendment rights away because then someone will find a reason to say I have a mental illness and take away my weapons.

The battle for marriage was lost twenty years ago. When cohabitation and childbirth out of wedlock are norms, I don't see gay marriage as a threat to civilization. With all respect to single moms and dads, biological or adoptive parents (anyone who faithfully raises a child for eighteen years deserves accolades), I'd like a consensus that children are best raised by a man and woman who are in a loving, long term, committed, mutually respectful relationship (what used to be quaintly defined as marriage) and then figure out how to encourage that. (I'd like someone else in the White House the next three years, too, but that won't happen either.)
I have no way to prove this: while I think that for some folks sexual preference is a choice (Jim McGreevey led an apparently very successful life as a hetero or at least bisexual), I think for some people homosexuality is not a choice, it's just they way they are wired, the same way that most straight folks could not choose to be gay.

As it happens (and you might have grokked this) I'm a crazy Zappa fan...but very specifically the early Mothers of Invention era (1966-1969). I love their live instrumental stuff the most...Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, and the live stuff built around that material from 1968-1969.
"The Little House I Used To Live In" is, to my mind, the single finest thing Zappa ever wrote or recorded. INSPIRING.

Abortion is always going to be front-and-center, because it involves the ongoing deaths of innocents.
The normalization of pre-marital sex and the increasing numbers of divorces have been a matter of grave concern for decades - I heard a lot more about that than homosexuality growing up in the 80s and 90s. That particular front is more a cultural question than a political one and it is a war we have largely lost at the moment. Gay marriage get the most public at the moment attention because if it is passed than it will radically change the definition of marriage for the foreseeable future - at the moment, our ideals are at least honored in the breach - and losing this battle will make going back much, much harder, and because it is a political issue as well as a cultural issue.
There is also the not-inconsiderable problem that legalized gay marriage can be used a weapon to destroy religious institutions, which makes it a very pressing concern indeed.

That's what I liked about the album it was New Order but adapted for the time (2000/2001). The reaction was pretty black or white. People either hated it or loved it, not much in between.

But I have a literally 100% complete collection of all FZ&MOI shows that openly circulate from 1966-1969, and I can't get enough of that stuff. It got more and more exclusively instrumental as 1968 went along, to the point where the only time anyone sang in 1969 was to perform dumb parody versions of old '50s doo-wop bullshit...but the instrumental and compositional stuff? Just breathtakingly beautiful. "Dog Breath," "Uncle Meat," "Mr. Green Genes," the "Orange County Lumber Truck" medley, "Little House I Used To Live In," etc....incredible material.

New Order was the successor band to Joy Division, one of the founding godfathers of postpunk (1977-1980), whose career came to an abrupt end when lead singer/lyricist Ian Curtis hanged himself. The rest of the group decided to carry on, renamed themselves, and eventually became the literal creators of the dance/club scene in the 1980's, whilst retaining their postpunk roots for several years. Their 1980-1984 music is really the stuff I cherish the most, though they were one of the all-time great singles groups well into the early '90s.

Sonic Youth
1.) Don't care for Modest Mouse
2.) Like any good hipster I like Dinosaur, Jr. immensely -- also one of the very, very, VERY few acts to successfully reunite with a studio LP as good as their previous shit.
3.) Sonic Youth are such a weird fucking band. I must be one of the few people in the world who unironically enjoys their "horrible noise" period (i.e. Confusion Is Sex/Kill Yr. Idols), but everything else until Sister is garbage with the exception of "Expressway To Yr. Skull." Suddenly, Sister shows real promise and then -- how the fuck did THIS happen?? -- Daydream Nation turns them into a monstrously anthemic band.
But...they sorta fall apart for me after that. The next two have some good tracks, but only Washing Machine really excites me.

what's your fav Talking Heads track? Nothing can compete with Burning Down the House for me. But the movie True Colors was really terrible.
Talking Heads was for me less about any single song, than about amazing albums that just kept delighting you in interesting ways as you listened through. Fear of Music is a favorite, but I love the early stuff too. Artists Only is a weird song, but it has stuck in my mind for decades.

I'm a huge TH fan. Currently have over 70 concerts of theirs on my computer to go alongside their complete official discography. But HOLY LIVING FUCK did they ever spontaneously collapse after Remain In Light. The first four albums? Nearly flawless! Everything afterwards? Complete shit, with the exception of one or two tracks per album! Everyone else likes Speaking In Tongues but I never thought much of it (and I don't like "Burning Down The House"...best song on that LP is "Girlfriend Is Better"), but Little Creatures can be reduced to "And She Was" and "Road To Nowhere (two of their greatest-ever songs, admittedly), True Stories has only "Wild Wild Life," and Naked has the awesome anti-environmentalist anthem "(Nothing But) Flowers" plus a bunch of cod-Peter Gabriel-world-beat garbage.
But those first four records? Hoo boy, now we're talkin'.
For the record, the answer to your question is probably "Once In A Lifetime." But since that's so boringly predictable I'll instead go with either "The Great Curve," "Found A Job," or "Heaven."

It's frankly scary how much money I've wasted on buying music. I have something like 7,000 CDs at this point, and that doesn't include boxed sets. I cadged my drugs off of friends, saved the $$ for buying music. And none of that PirateBay download shit either.
Ironically enough, one group who I know virtually nothing about other than their radio hits is Queen. As an obsessive Bowie fan, my favorite thing of theirs has always been "Under Pressure" rather than any of their own proper work, which is probably hugely unfair to them.

When I was a freshman in college, the RA played the first album over and over and over and over and over and over and over -- which kind of made me TH averse....but, then, they came out with "Stop Making Sense".
So, we have godkids in Sacramento. Their mom used to run AV at the University I went to -- that's how we met, originally. The largest lecture hall there had a capacity of something like 900 people, and she was running "Stop Making Sense".....and as it went along, she kept thinking "this is pretty good", and cranking up the sound volume.

They got popular by selling their albums out eh back of their car and by people copying it on cassette and passing it around. So when they weren't rich and famous it was ok.

What I'm saying is that this blog is full of assholes, loudmouths, know-it-alls, and smug motherfuckers. I happen to be one of them myself (ask around, anyone will tell ya). People don't get - or don't want to get - that music is someone's work. Copying music is the equivalent of stealing an architect's blueprints or an author's book or a software engineer;s code. Yet for some reason stealing music is perfectly fine by most people as if the musician is doing the work for charity of something.
There are a number of people on this board who were arguing for abolishing copyright laws not too long ago.

When you're just starting out as a group, it makes sense to do any damn thing you can to 'create a market', so to speak, even if that means giving shit away for free. It's no different than a new product selling at a super low (or two-for-one) initial price to create interest, then raising the price once people have decided they really like it and want more. Why shouldn't Metallica, or any other band, want to charge market value for their music after working so long and hard (often for peanuts) to 'make it'?

My book or article - the assembly of words that I created - can be copyrighted, but not the idea behind them. If you want to get money for your ideas, put them in a book that people want to pay money for and market that, like every other academic discipline.

The second- and third-layer ramifications of that is where things get interesting. One HUGE problem with gay marriage is that there is no comprehensive list of what the hell marriage is, so far as the government is concerned. If there were, you could go down that list one item at a time and say, "is this ok for gays?" or "is this ok for the 21st century?" and figure it out. But things like "a spouse may not be compelled to testify against the other spouse"? -- a bunch of this stuff isn't even written down.

As a guy who loved (loves) older music, the crap thing about being born in 1980 is that, by the time my taste had developed (first beginning in 1995 or so) everyone who I was into was either defunct or dead.
The one exception that I treasure: Radiohead. Got into them early, first concert in 1995, seen them 25+ times after that, and even have a semi-official connection to the band's camp at this point. A vastly underrated live experience, too -- not like they were the Grateful Dead or anything (another group that, surprise surprise, I'm a big fan of), but their setlists are/were different every night.

Oh come on, she sings on literally ONE SONG on the actual album (the shows from the tour itself...that's a bit different. Really only "Playing In The Band" is harmed, tho'.) And it's a very discreet backing harmony part on one of the great songs from the LP, "He's Gone."
Also, the pedant in me wants to point that she was actually absent for a blessed three-month period in October-December 1973, on maternity leave. And yes, those shows are treasured by Deadheads in large part for that reason.

I passed up a lot of free tickets in my youth because I get terrible headaches from most live shows. Doesn't matter if I like the band or not, the PA systems just seem to generate a blast in a range I find debilitating. It isn't a problem for playback of recorded material if the volume isn't insanely high.

Some of my favorite live stuff is the Micky and the Heartbeats stuff from 68.

Thing is though, I never much cared for those Hartbeats shows. They were an attempt to play without Bob Weir or Pigpen (because the rest of the band felt like they were 'holding them back' musically, retarding their growth...and they might've had a point at the time), but it never really gelled.
Agree completely on the Pigpen era though. 1967-1972, that's my wheelhouse for the Dead. The stuff immediately afterward (1973-1974) could be great too, but they really lost something when they lost Pig doing those blues numbers and the great lengthy jams like "Lovelight" and "Good Lovin'."
1970 -- If I had to choose one "year" for live Dead, that would be it. The "Dark Star" from 2/13/70 may just be my favorite piece of live music ever recorded. Glorious improvisation -- proof that drugs can't be ALL bad.

It sure would be, but unfortunately like the Holy Grail it's a myth. The band is adamant that the stage show for The Lamb was never professionally filmed. Which is truly perverse, as previous tours had at least one show filmed, and this was easily their most 'visual' stage presentation ever. But them's the breaks.
Guess we'll never get that glorious hi-def view of Peter Gabriel in his Giant Testicle Man suit that we're craving.

The Warlocks Demo and that material was by far my fav. Too bad there's so little of the live stuff from 65, though.

The thing is, governments' interest in patents and copyrights are a TRADE. You put something into the river of culture, and the government helps you profit and protects you for a period of time....until the cord is cut and your work-product joins future citizens' birthright. Artificial extension of copyright (and patents) is really reneging on the original deal. If you want to make it impossible to quote or parody Steamboat Willie, have each viewer sign a 20-page contract before you let them watch in 1928.....don't kick copyright from 28 years (extendable for another 28 if the author is still alive) to 95 years after the work was produced.

Me, I'd take '68, '70, and '72. Three rather different sounds from the band but all of them compelling in their own way. I really adore the early 'Primal Dead' material from January-March 1968, with those early Dark Star > China Cat > The Eleven sequences and the occasional 20-minute freakout on "Viola Lee Blues." 1970, meanwhile, had all the great acoustic folky stuff plus the apex of their psychedelic exploration. 1972 was where Keith Godchaux got comfortable and all the great country-sounding stuff like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Woman" and "He's Gone" became fully integrated.
1971 is actually a really 'down' year for me. Sort of an interregnum, where Hart had left and Kreutzmann hadn't yet fully adjusted to his role as the band's sole drummer; meanwhile Garcia and Lesh had consciously decided to scale back on the jamming material and just play mostly straight-ahead shorter stuff. Some good shows there (Dick's Picks 35 has two of them, if you're into that series), but less interesting that the years which surround it.
The only knock against 1969 is that the first half of the year was a bit too repetitive in that the same few songs were being performed every night. By late October and November, however, they'd brought in most of the material that would become Workingman's Dead, and "Dark Star" was becoming more and more inspired as a melodic improvisation showcase. 11/8/69 (released as Dick's Picks 16t) is one of the all-time great Dead shows simply for its second set, which has their greatest medley of all time: Dark Star > The Other One > Dark Star > Uncle John's Band Jam (from before the words had even been written!) > Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Caution > The Main Ten (the prototype for "Playing In The Band") > Caution > Feedback > And We Bid You Goodnight.
A full hour and a half of nonstop music, every second of it mesmerizing. Godly.

You've got some really good concepts there, but there are some holes as well. Original copyright is already free and automatic, but I like the escalating charges for maintenance. There should be a necessity for continuous publication as well. But, even then, remember that this great nation deigns to concern itself with property rights to intellectual property in order that subsequent generations of citizens will benefit from accumulations of knowledge and art. The deal is, you give it to future generations and we protect you from competition now -- otherwise, it makes the government merely a mercenary.
Let's say that I wanted to pass on some information from the golden age of computing -- 1996. And I wanted to quote an article from UNIX Review ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNIX_Review ). That there is no way to legally do so until 2090 is freakishly obscene. The decaying issues in my garage may well be the last way to get that information -- and I'd have to physically present the original magazine to the intended recipient.
And that's merely when substantial works are being used. What about collages? Samples? Derivative works? Remixes? In truth, the useful life of creative work product is getting shorter and shorter, but the production of infinitesimal value from such work is getting longer and longer. And that's wrong for The People, their government, their intellectual freedom, their continued creativity, and common f'ing sense.

Sort of ties in with my point. Mozart was the "pop music" of his day, used to tour and everything.....and how many of the "Top of the Pops 1780's" can you name besides him? But everything else didn't become "public domain" -- it remained under copyright until someone could finally do Gluck revivals after a suitable time and maybe breathe some life into 'em.
I think Alberta Oil Peon is onto a great idea. Shorten "free" copyrights to maybe 5 years, and get 5-year extensions for 5% of what you earned from the specific work in the previous 5 years -- or $20,000, whichever is more (that'll teach you sit on stuff that doesn't sell!). Get as many extensions as you want while you're alive, and whoever inherits it can do 10 more.

I don't have any problem with Mickey content created today....just the stuff from 1928. Perhaps you wanted to introduce a new hand-animated character by having it pilot a steamboat and react to a cow? Mickey is a Trade Mark, and goes by different rules entirely -- which are, surprisingly, much more reasonable. Copyright is "quoting".

Yeah, I don't know. They're all pretty profitable (7+grand Euro bonuses for all VW workers last year), so hopefully they'll allow some internecine rivalry.

The founders had a specific bargain in mind -- don't keep something secret, expose it to the world, and we'll help you cash in on it for a time.....'cause that will help our children prosper. You have several options -- keep it to yourself, expose it only with contracts, or take the deal. You want government help, though -- it's gotta default to Joe Schlubbo after a bit.
And note, also, that this is not going to the government -- it's going to whoever wants to use it. Or not. It's free, part of the heritage.
Under Mao, your inventions belong to the state and you only get a piece if you're incentivized. Here, it's your invention......and what you do with it matters.

respective Writings and Discoveries;" -- it's marvelously limited, and the State intervenes in a very selective way to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from "Authors and Inventors" to the people, but doesn't touch ownership of these things at all.

I used to watch Aussie Football back when I was in High School (class of '79) in the LA area. Opening footage was tracking a guy running his guts out from one side of the screen to the other.....then you see the bouncing ball....then, before the guy gets to the ball, he collides with a goalpost in slo-mo. Reminded you of the whole "breakfast 'involved v. committed' speech". Y'know -- just think of your bacon and eggs.....the chicken was "involved", but the pig was "committed".......
