The Latest on Missing Flight MH370
So after examining all the data collected so far authorities are now fairly convinced that the plane was deliberately diverted due to human action. This is based on a couple of details:
- The fact that the ACARS system was logged off (versus just being cut off) over 10 minutes before the transponder cut off (which happened right at an ATC handoff).
- Military primary radar returns showing a plane heading west over Malaysia shortly later and making course adjustments and possible drastic altitude changes.
- Satellite hand-shake pings going on for another 7+ hours
None of these are conclusive but the combination is extremely difficult to explain by any other scenario than a takeover by someone.
So based on the strength/timing of the last satellite ping, the satellite footprint, and remaining fuel authorities believe the plane went down somewhere near the two arcs shown below in red. People are referring to the two possible arcs as the Terrorism route (Northern arc) and the Suicide route (Southern arc). [Note that the arcs represent the possible location of the plane at the last ping - not the flight path up to that point.]
The Northern arc is problematical due to the mountainous terrain and large amount of radar systems along all the national borders. So far no country in that area has reported any contacts that might match the plane's flight. And on the Southern arc there are very few radar installations except for Australia's JORN OTHR system which may not have been active during the flight.

The Dumbest John Kerry Statement Ever
Which is a tough call given his long record of arrogant wrongness and his short tenure thus far as secretary of state.
Kerry is never merely convinced of things, he's "absolutely convinced." And almost invariably, he's absolutely wrong.
Kerry is now absolutely convinced that "it's a mistake" for Israeli leaders "again and again" to raise the PLO's refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state "as the critical decider of their attitude toward the possibility of a [Palestinian] state and peace." Apparently, Kerry believes that Israel should consider as its peace partner an entity that doesn't accept its right to exist as it is fundamentally constituted.
So in Kerry Reality it's perfectly plausible to be able to make peace with people who won't recognize your right to exist.
Exhibit A is their latest article, "How did Irish Americans get so disgusting?" (link to twitchy).
Gays vs Blacks in DC along with a few other fault lines.
In case you guys don't follow this, Catania is the openly gay councilman, who's been an at-large member of the Council since 1998. He used to be a Republican, but since 2004 he's been an independent.
...Second, and much more importantly, Catania's run explodes the entire DC political equilibrium. White liberals are going to support Catania, while urban blacks are going to support Mayor Gray (or whichever black person gets the Dem nomination).
Architect Sentenced to Year in Jail For Firefighter's Death
An architect was sentenced to a year in LA county jail after pleading no contest to the manslaughter of a firefighter who died while trying to contain a fire in a home the architect had designed for himself. The case dates back to 2011, when a fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills home of a German architect named Gerhard Becker, who designed the building himself. The fire began in one of four fireplaces that had been manufactured for outdoor use but hidden within the houses itself; this means they were in clear violation of local building codes.
The flames then melted a water pipe, which leaked thousands of gallons of water into a ceiling above the heads of the firefighters battling the fire. When the ceiling collapsed, it crushed 61-year-old Glenn Allen, who died the next day of his injuries
Becker allegedly had the fireplaces installed after the mansion had cleared its inspection, writing, "I want this to be installed after the final inspection so we don't have any final delays by the inspector."
And he was less than remorseful after the fire:
Becker was interviewed by fire investigators, but two months after they last spoke to him, he broke the lease on his home, sold two vehicles and flew to Switzerland and then Spain, where he began to build another luxury home. There he set up construction companies in the name of his wife, a yoga instructor, investigators said.
BBC Censors the Word 'Jesus' From Song Lyrics
BBC management banned singer Eliza Doolittle from using the word 'Jesus' in a performance of her love song 'Walking on Water'. She was forced to change the lyric from "Sometimes I wish I was Jesus, I'd get my Air Max on and run across the sea for you" to "Sometimes I wish it was easy..." when she appeared on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Radio 2.
...This is the second instance of politically correct censorship on the BBC in just one week. On Thursday it was also forced to defend a decision to postpone a discussion on BBC Three's 'Free Speech' show about being gay and Muslim.

No they know from the last ping that it was somewhere along the arcs. Even if it had immediately changed directions at that point, it couldn't have gone very far away from it before running out of fuel.

Time to freak, Money B gets to it,
Not a heavyweight, but I go twelve rounds,
With a jab and a stick, I'm goin' lick for lick, so
Give me the helmet, I'll be the stunt man.
Just relax, and I won't front.
Like Anita, I'm givin' you the best that I've got,
And I'll be takin' it slow, never missin' a spot
Yes, caressing your back we're chest to chest she's kissing on my freckles.
I nibbled around your ears before I suck upon your neck.
'Oh Money B,' yeah, that's what you'll be screamin' and creamin'
But it's not a wet dream, it's the real
The freaky dog, dark nasty, never lettin' a kitty-cat get past me,
Without picking it up, pettin' it, teasin' it,
Takin' it on home and pleasin' it

I dunno - Bogart wore a fedora pretty darn well - partly because he wasn't wearing one "ironically." It was just an everyday part of most men's wardrobe in those days. My dad was still wearing hats in the 70's - he didn't care if they were "in" or not.
I still remember when the church we attended had these metal clip thingees on the pews, so men could hang their hats during mass, rather than putting them next to their seat and taking up space.

That initial, then denied, report of a landing at (or in) Nanning, China still bothers me. Fits nicely into that northern arc.
I would still love to see a basic map of the various air search radar ranges vs the 777 rcs.

I suspect that the hijacked plane hid over another flight. Air traffic control would see this radar ping (actually two overlapping ones, one at 29000 feet and one at 36000), and check the transponder, and go, "yeah, that's him").

Thought exercise.
1. Our military boffins know exactly where the plane landed, and is, at this very moment. Fact is, they knew about week ago.
2. Rather than trumpet that fact, they're helping to feed the confusion as to it's fate.
3. Because, of course, they don't want the bad guys to know that we know, or what we know.
4. Buying time of course, for a proper, intense and highly detailed gathering of intel to occur, especially as gathered by highly talented parachuting n' swimming men in green faces, who silently go where they're not invited.
5. Working up, one hopes, to the development of a highly effective insertion, strike and recovery package to recover any (hopeful) plane survivors intact. And, to recapture or destroy the plane.
6. And, to very seriously capture the persons involved in the terror mission, so as to fully *ahem "debrief" them, in the most socially incorrect ways possible.
7. Ending, hopefully, with a noticeable number of strikes higher up the terrorist food chain, even extending into certain islamo-governments.
Yeah, just a thought process...... but, it's logical, and I would hope that something like this would be in process. If, that is, the plane isn't just simply a new reef on the bottom of the ocean.

its WITHIN the Arc.... ie... that is the furthest out it could be for the Sat to pick up its signals...
It could be anywhere CLOSER to the Sat than that.
Posted by: Romeo13 at March 16, 2014 11:26 PM (84gbM)
No I believe the satellite is able to determine the angle of the signal to the satellite so they're pretty sure it was close to the arcs at the last ping.

Is it consensus here at AOSHQ at this time that the flight was intercepted, rather than crashed?
And if you do think the craft was saved (most likely bad ends for the passengers however), who do you think has it??

We eat together twice a day, more often than not. I'd prefer breakfast and supper, but I'm open to whatever. And I will of course make allowances, but for fuck's sake, I do not think this is unreasonable. And NO phone or laptop allowed.
He takes Sundays off. Period. That means no phone or laptop. (Or time limits, at least; I get that he needs to check in) Now, between you and me and the fencepost, I'd settle for Sundays til around 3 or 4, but for his own damn sake he needs a break!
And this is so embarrassing, but he needs to come to bed regularly! I don't even mean sex, I mean just come to fucking bed, not work til 3 in the morning, then fall asleep on the fucking couch in his office.

I have had a black duster since college (very handy for my winter mini-semester in England) and a gray fedora that is usually worn only with the duster. Whenver I wear it out with peers, they inevitably ask to wear the hat for a minute. I am definitely not a hipster, just appreciate the old style and dammit, it looks sharp.

The satellite computes the round-trip travel time for the ping from sat-to-plane and back again. Knowing that radio waves travel at the speed of light, that small time delay can be transformed into a distance. Those arcs represent the places on the Earth's surface exactly that distance from the satellite. If there were two satellites pinging the plane, you'd have two arcs, and their intersection would give you a fix.
GPS works the same way, but in reverse. Your GPS unit receives signals from multiple low-altitude satellites, whose positions are known, and the signals are time-stamped. The GPS unit says to itself, "Hmmm...I'm X miles from satellite A's location (at the time of the fix), Y miles from satellite B, and Z miles from satellite C. Those three vectors can intersect at only one point in three-space, I must be on the top floor of the parking structure at Fourth and Broadway.

So, he was at normal cruising altitude and disabled the safety masks in the cabin, then cracked the pressure. As the pressure faded away in the cabin and the masks did not deploy, people would have come forward to pound on the (locked) cockpit door, and he could hear them pounding.....so he climbed until the pounding stopped.
Then he pressurized the cabin again and tried to open the door, and found that it was blocked -- by all the bodies of the asphyxiated crew/passengers, so he had to do the power dive to "float" [zero-g] all the bodies away from the cockpit door so he could go to the lav.

Well the convergence of leaks has consistently been towards a stolen plane (and probably by the original pilot), so unless *everyone* is lying, that much is at least likely. Which is certainly possible.
You might want to check what latitudes we're dealing with and whether SE Asia had as cold a winter as we did-I'm not sure if there even are any frozen lakes in the area indicated.
If this was a state sponsored operation, then all the plane has to do is reach friendly territory (to the cause) and its landing wouldn't be reported to anyone in the broader world.

Well that would be more like space radar.
My understanding is that the plane occasionally sends a message up to the satellite and then the satellite sends back a response. This lets the plane know that it is in contact with the satellite and the satellite know the approximate angle to the plane so it can direct its signal more efficiently. I'm assuming the satellite uses a phased array antenna so the timing comes from the relative phase differences between the signals at different parts of the array.

They aren't courses. They are the positions the plane could have been in at the time of the last ping (which would be an entire circle) constrained at the ends by the distance the plane could have travelled from the point where contact was lost, and in the middle by the presumption it didn't just fly in circles. It probably wasn't at the very end if it was zigzagging about, but it probably also wasn't near the center as the post disappearance pilot (who may be the original) presumably flew for that period of time for some reason.

Then you lay down the ultimatum--the shit-or-get-off-the-pot stuff. Thor, do you or do you not give a damn about my need to connect, daily, in a meaningful manner? Yes, or no, and are you willing to show it?
His answer will make your determination.
Relationships all boil down to whether or not you can handle this particular set of bullshit events and actions, in sight of whatever perceived advantage you gain by staying. I will tolerate a great deal of dirty laundry, occasional bad breath after a night of carousing, having to cook every damned meal, and even running errands when his back is out, in exchange for being loved to my very core, protected with his life (if need be) and certain lifelong commitment.
But, it took the ultimatum to get him to agree to this setup. He could have me, 24/7/365 +/- 60 years, if he would give up booze and the other ladies. I looked it up recently -- Everest has been climbed without oxygen -- and that's 29000 feet and climbing a mountain to boot.....so, presumably, some people could go higher if all they were doing was panting. But at 45000 feet, the normal 14.7 psi air pressure is about 2 psi. Here's a handy chart -- http://tinyurl.com/2pp9oh

You/re right. Those aren't "courses". They are sets of possible positions for the aircraft at the time of the ping. The diagram is saying, "At the time of the last ping, this plane was at 23.xxxxxx thousand miles from that satellite. An imaginary sphere of that radius will intersect the surface of the Earth along the arc shown."
The plane probably never flew along that arc, but at the time of the ping, its course intersected the arc at some point.

right, the reason the arcs do not complete a circle is the plane did not have enough fuel to span the diameter of the circle.
The arcs are bisected by other satellite footprints that did not register the aircraft. So that bite out of the middle is due to the trialling coverage from the easterly bird and the western terminus due to either polar region having no coverage or a northern hemisphere bird.
Those are just ideal intersection arcs for the 8.11 ping. A lot of things could make that line very fuzzy: Satellite and transceiver error, aircraft roll relative to the satellite, other interference, etc. If the aircraft was banked to with west, the easterly bird could have missed the ping, rendering the un-joined arc meaningless.

The curved arcs are NOT the flight path. Apparently the satellite can determine the angle of the signal and the arcs represent the points on Earth that could have sent the signal at that angle minus the footprints of other satellites that didn't receive any signals as well as areas with good radar coverage where the plane wasn't seen.
The footprint of the satellite is clearly larger since it also received pings from the plane while it was traveling towards the arc from Malaysia.

Hard to believe that the plane would fly a course, through even 5 or more data points, that would be a constant arc from a single point (that being the Sat).
That graphic doesn't show any information from the earlier pings.
Yes, it would be useful to get the position arcs from the earlier pings but that information, while available to investigators, is not available to us.

And presumably each of those earlier pings would also have an arc. The arc in the diagram is clearly labeled "arc of last contact at at 8:30 A.M.", meaning any point on that arc is possible location for the plane. The arc is a set of possible locations. As Jean says above, the gap in the middle may be due to the footprint of another satellite, which DID NOT ping the plane, intersecting, or maybe it is within the coverage area of the Malaysian ATC radar, and eliminated for that reason. I would like to see the arcs of the earlier pings, too. Assuming the plane kept to its nominal cruising speed, you could note the time between pings, convert to miles at that speed, and then try to fit a line segment of that length between the arcs. For each pair of arcs, you should get 2 solutions.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 16, 2014 09:00 PM (2w1g0)
The part I don't get about the arc is why it is so large. If I know the time of the planes last position and the speed range of travel. Why can't they limit the arc since they also know the time of the ping?

Yeah, I get all that -- that's why I was thinking about the explanation....and that's where the idea idea that once everyone's ears started popping, the cabin crew and some passengers in first would start pounding on the cockpit door came from. But once they were at the door, they could keep pounding for longer than was survivable -- breath-hold diving records are in excess of 10 minutes. And, of course, it takes time to depressurize or repressurize a plane using standard systems (i.e. not blowing a hole in the side).
Which led to the grim scenario originally described. Cut the air supply and set the cabin for depressurization and go on like your simulator said you -- shit! They're pounding on the cockpit door! They're supposed to be quietly going into the final sleep, and -- that sounded like metal on metal! More pounding! The gauge says they're at the pressure equivalent of outside, but they're still at it! Climb!

The point that I had originally made was that there was an earlier disclosure that the plane was settling into a standard route through airspace -- there is a network of preplanned routes that all airliners use (to see it, go to skyvector.com and head to a section of the map that is not particularly "busy"). With no transponder, the pilot could have selected a variety of such routes, but knowing that the route he was on intersected the arcs of each satellite ping one hour's cruising distance apart would make it pretty obvious pretty fast.....if we had all seven arcs. But we don't -- we only have the last one.

All the arc in the diagram conveys is the plane's possible position based on its distance from the satellite. And as mentioned by others, this is limited in the middle by another satellite that would have pinged it if it had been there. The outer ends of the arc are, I assume, limited by the maximum distance the plane could have travelled in the 7+ hours between the disappearance and the last ping (this is a pretty large number).
It probably wasn't at either end at that time since it doesn't seem to have travelled in a straight line, and every course change (unknown to us) would reduce the length along the arc it could be from the point of disappearance

Re: the arcs. If we had just one of the preceeding pings, especially the one just prior to the last one, we could actually narrow the search down considerably as knowing the maximum speed of the aircraft, a few calculations would limit the length of the arc it could appear along considerably.

The arc covers thousands of miles. If I draw a line from last known contact point to locations on the arc the distances are wildly different. There is no way the arc needs to be that long. And travel after the ping has no connection to the arc. My point being there is a small portion of the arc that has meaning to the planes last approximate location.

The performance arcs of active search radars vs a 777 at the last known altitude, would be interesting to see. a. because flying an evasive flight path with random turns and back-tracking would in itself look suspicious, and cause any radar operators to alert
b. because if the pilot altered speed, direction, or altitude randomly, you couldn't really do the average speed calculation.
I'd say do the calculations once with the plane flying at max possible cruising speed, and again at say 2/3 normal speed, to allow for some evasive maneuvers. Those two calculations would set limits to your search area. Then I would look for known useable runways inside those limits, especially those that are in the hands of islamist-friendly governments or insurgencies, or that could be temporarily so occupied.

There is a sort of male menopause phenomenon that seems to have the symptoms you've listed. The men aren't consciously drawing away from their wives but throwing themselves at their work is often how they deal with it.
Alternatively, it could be pure straight-out fear of what the future holds. I have nothing myself, so nothing to lose and that creates an intense anxiety as I'm underemployed and worried about someday outliving all of the family that makes it possible for me to survive at all. But for anyone paying attention to sources besides the MSM things have to be pretty damn scary. You may officially have a very solid financial footing on paper but that could all go poof tomorrow if enough people suddenly are forced to acknowledge the rickety debt structure holding up the world today. If I was working regularly, especially if I was capable of earning in the six figures, I'd be terrified to stop out of concern that so much of what I supposedly have could be declared null and void overnight or seized by a flailing government seeking to keep the machine going just a little longer.

a. because flying an evasive flight path with random turns and back-tracking would in itself look suspicious, and cause any radar operators to alertb. because if the pilot altered speed, direction, or altitude randomly, you couldn't really do the average speed calculation.I'd say do the calculations once with the plane flying at max possible cruising speed, and again at say 2/3 normal speed, to allow for some evasive maneuvers. Those two calculations would set limits to your search area. Then I would look for known useable runways inside those limits, especially those that are in the hands of islamist-friendly governments or insurgencies, or that could be temporarily so occupied.

The plane has a maximum speed and a minimum speed. If you have two pings separated by an hour, then you have a maximum angle and a minimum angle for the plane to have flown (assuming, of course, that the plane flew in a straight line).

I have nothing to add. I put the wife through all the same shit. For years she was getting up at 5am for work, and I would just be getting home, or I would be gone for bit here and there. We were always ships that passed in the night. Still are sometimes. I guess the thing is we always managed to get some "us" time in. When we were younger I dragged her all over the place, so I think she had enough of her fill to just let me do my thing, plus her career started demanding some of her time too. It all works out.

Yeah. Of course there is a "safe maximum" and then what the plane would do if you firewall the throttles and go as fast as you can. And then there is the minimum cruise to maintain altitude, and/or slower over-the-ground speeds achieved by circling. I doubt a pilot wishing to "hide" in plain sight (so to speak) would wish to call attention to himself by flying the plane so far out of its normal envelope.

Go to skyvector.com, zoom out, go find the Philippines and zoom in until it fills your screen. Make sure you're on "World Hi". If you were flying around the Philippines and didn't want to be noticed, you'd be on one of those lines.
If you did want to be noticed, and wanted ATC to help you not run into someone midair, you'd be saying things like, "On A583 [zoom in until you can read the line markers] at 32000 feet, intending to turn at W17 toward Puerto Princesa at same altitude."
There'd be a constant stream of commercial planes in the designated air corridors, with only a few joyriders off in the boonies (and avoiding the hell out of corridors).

Ibanez can make some fine guitars....but I'm not sure this is one of them. Les Paul clones are a dime-a-dozen. I collect Ibanez Musician guitars and basses, which are more like http://tinyurl.com/kqcrppl -- and, as far as I'm concerned, are awesome on steroids (as in, beyond LP's).

well, for that money you can have a recent american tele. The body on that Ibanez tele looks like a jenga game. I was never bowled over by the lawsuit guitars, because in reality they were trying to make guitars better than the american guitars were at the time, and those guitars were soooo fucking pitiful that even if a copy was made marginally better you still were pretty far off the mark overall.

In my mind, the thing to understand about guitars is that they are approaching a set of problems with an infinite set of solutions, so you have to 'grok' where they're coming from in order to evaluate them against the standards of what they are attempting.
Case in point -- LP's pioneered humbuckers to have a warm, rich, fat sound with little noise. They represent fretboard virtuosity because the fretboard is more spacious (wider) than other guitars, and they are meant to "ring" and sustain, through their use of pocketed and joined necks instead of bolt-ons and bodies of exotic woods. You can surpass an LP by making better pickups, cutting the noise, emphasizing the sustain, or making the sound richer or more variable.
Strats tend to have a thinner, "lead-ier" sound from their single-coil pickups (though they have more variety in-play from bridge to neck), be faster to finger (because their fingerboard is narrower) but less accurate, and are optimized towards more staccato phrasings than washes (bolt-on neck). They are also more bend-y. To be better than a Strat, you can have more versatile pickups, a faster neck, and a better tremolo.
That's not to say that you can't graft better sustain into a Strat, or thinner, "lead-ier" sound into an LP.....but that's not why you should have chosen that "style" of axe in the first place.

It gets more fun from there. Back in the day, if you had money to burn (like, maybe, you were a touring act with a recording contract) you'd have whole different amplification systems to go with your different axes for different sounds.
My ex-boss, the long-time guitar collector, recently converted most of his stuff to Line 6 Variaxes. Things have gotten to the point where the nuances of sound output can all be simulated reasonably-well using virtual pickups and virtual amps, and most of what matters is comfort in the hand. I think there's still a difference, but wouldn't bet on there being one in five years.

I love my '72 Tele Thinline Reissue, and it's a pretty damned good compromise between the standard Tele setup and a Les Paul, I think.
For a while, I was considering a Strat for my next guitar, but I've been a Les Paul guy at heart, ever since I was a starry-eyed kid. I may eventually get a Strat at some point, but for now, I have my sights set on a LP studio -- ideally, one in Pelham blue.
But, finding a great deal on just about any LP would make me pretty happy.

Yeah there is really no reason to get a copy anything, because there are just too many good real ones out there. That wasn't the case some years back, but it is today. Ok yeah, there are some guitars that are soooooo fucking epensive that a copy is the only thing one can get, but for the most part it don't pay. Sometimes you do find some cheap guitars that are absolute freaks of nature and you just can't pass them up. I have this one les paul copy, its called an SVK. I think it was a pair of American dudes who had them built overseas to their specs until gibson caught wind and put a stop to them. Its a set neck, made with really nice mahogany, incredible neck and fret job, and I needed it like a 3rd asshole because there are 5 real ones here, but for $200 with real grover tuners I couldn't say no, because it plays insane and once I added some better pickups the sucker became a blowtorch.

One of the things that I do, when I'm not obsessively pursuing Ibanez Musicians, is consider the total space and what I've got covered. I ain't got twang, for instance....I could well use a Tele and learn to do some chicken-pickin'. On the bass end, I can run all over Precision or Jazz basses....but can't quite get enough growl for a Ricky, thwub for a fretless, or ring for an acoustic.

That could also explain the slow loss of electrical systems. And the drastic changes in altitude as the pilots trying to get high enough to put out the flames, and then a dive to "whip" out the flames (or they too succumbed to the loss of O2).

You would need: An experienced pilot, a hanger, a couple of guys to move bodies and paint. You could have the cable made, most cable house would have no idea what it would be for. The hardest part in the hanger.
