A country with too many laws is effectively a country without any laws

You're already a criminal but the state just hasn't deigned to charge you yet.

This time it's going 2 mph too slow on the freeway.

Such was the case for a Maryland woman driving on Interstate 95 in bad weather, with wind speeds gusting up to 40 miles per hour. Because the winds were ferociously buffeting her car, the woman (who remains anonymous) dropped her speed from the maximum limit of 65 MPH down to 63 MPH.

Little did the woman know that the easiest target for law enforcement is people who break the little laws, not the big ones. As far as one highway patrol officer was concerned, driving two MPH below the speed limit in the left (or fast) lane is going to get you a moving violation. Not just any violation, but (a) a fairly expensive one, coming in at $90; and (b) a black mark against the driver's record for committing a moving violation.

The woman later told reporters that she was "really shocked." Her first thought was, "Oh my God, you've got to be kidding me."

Outlaw GunSmithing - Going Mobile

You can buy an unfinished AR-15 receiver like this without going through an FFL since the government considers it a non-functional hunk of metal.

rawcasting-1024x685

And it's completely legal to finish it into a working AR-15 receiver so long as you do it yourself and it's for personal use.

Given how cheap and portable milling equipment is these days, that gives Mr. outlaw gunsmith an idea:

However, as I was contemplating the issues, it occurred to me that the setup I used to finish the receiver was something that would fit in a car. Which led me to the idea of a mobile outlaw gunsmithing service.

What I am proposing to do is this: I am prepared to bring my equipment to a place, along with the 80% receiver. Once I am there, I will set the machine up and get everything ready, and then I will guide  you in the process of finishing the receiver. You will be the one actually turning the wheels of the machine, so you will be the one making the cuts, thus you will be the person who is creating the receiver. Once the receiver is finished, you will have a fully functional AR-15, identical in almost every respect to one that you would order from a gun dealer.

I am trying to gauge how much interest there is in a service like this. The cost for a receiver made this way is, unfortunately, going to be higher than the cost of a receiver that you get through a regular FFL, because the unfinished receivers are actually almost the same amount as a cheap finished receiver, and of course, there are my costs for travel, tools, and everything else. The upside is, of course, that you have a workable firearm that has no paper trail attached to it. This might be of particular interest for people living in states like Colorado that are trying to criminalize ownership of AR-15 style weapons.

...There are a lot of further options here, also. I can easily get complete upper receivers, as well as parts kits to complete a bare lower receiver. None of these things are restricted items. So, for some extra money up front, I can get you as many bells and whistles as you want for your new toy.

You Might Already Be a Child Pornographer

If you've ever taken a picture of your children in the bath or even semi-nude, the state considers you a child pornographer and will take you to court. This happened to Todd Hoffner, head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato:

Hoffner was charged after a school employee found the video on his university-issued cellphone and notified authorities. Hoffner had taken his problematic phone to work to be checked out.

Hoffner testified earlier that his three young children asked him to videotape a skit they had concocted after taking a bubble bath.

A search of his home computer found no evidence of child porn, and social workers found no evidence that the couple's children had been abused.

...A judge sided with Todd Hoffner, head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato, by throwing out the child porn charges against him last Friday.

The judge said the cellphone video was nothing more than children playfully dancing naked after a bath.

As well as an AZ couple:

An Arizona couple falsely accused of taking pornographic pictures of their three young daughters are suing Walmart in a bid to win damages after an horrific ordeal which they claim robbed them of precious time with their kids and cost them $75,000 in legal fees.

In 2008, Lisa and Anthony 'A.J.' Demaree took their three young daughters - then aged five, four and 18 months - on a trip to San Diego.

On returning home they took 144 photographs, mostly from their recent trip, to their local Walmart in Peoria, Arizona to have them developed.

...A Walmart employee, unhappy over the content of several bath time pictures, contacted bosses with concerns that they may have been images of child pornography.

Instead of receiving a batch of happy memories of a fun family outing, the couple were reported to the police and their children were placed into the care of the Arizona Child Protective Services Agency.

Sadly at this time you'd be advised to destroy or encrypt any nude photos of your children.

Dianne Feinstein's Generosity Towards the American People

Doug Ross caught this revealing assumption in Feinstein's response to Ted Cruz:

Just know that I've been here for a long time. I've passed on a number of bills. I've studied the Constitution myself. I am reasonably well educated... Incidentally, this does not prohibit-you use the word "prohibit"-it exempts two thousand two hundred and seventy one weapons. Isn't that enough for the people of the United States? Do they need a bazooka?

So all guns (including newly developed ones) will be banned by default but Feinstein will graciously allow you to keep 2271 existing models.

Prince Charles Has Been Studying Arabic

So he can read the koran in its native language.

Yesterday, it emerged Charles has taken this interest a step further by having lessons in Arabic for the last six months.

This would enable him to read the Koran in its original form as well as decipher Arabic script on visits to mosques and museums.

Details emerged during a reception in the Qatari capital of Doha on his nine-day tour of the Middle East with the Duchess of Cornwall.

...A royal aide confirmed he has been having lessons for six months, adding: 'He is enormously interested in the region.'

Charles speaks good French, some German and has had lessons in Welsh. He is passionate about encouraging dialogue between religions and has spoken about his study of the Koran.

Never convert until you've all the fine print in the original.

Japanese Former-Wrestler Turned Politician Banned From Meetings

Because he won't take off his mask and lose his secret powers.

Skull Reaper A-ji won just 2,828 votes in the election, campaigning on a platform demanding educational reform and improved social welfare facilities, but that was sufficient for him to take a seat in the city council.

But even before he could attend his first meeting, other councilors suggested that it was inappropriate for a member of the assembly to wear a mask to conceal their identity.

...The chamber apparently declined to take his charitable work into consideration, however, and refused to allow Skull Reaper A-ji to take part in a meeting on Monday on the grounds that he was contravening a rule that states "a person taking the floor shall not wear items such as a hat."

Interviewed after being informed of the decision, Skull Reaper A-ji said it was "frustrating."

"If I take my mask off, I'm an entirely different person," he told the Nikkan Sports newspaper. "I will not take it off."

SC Woman Arrested For Selling VHS Porn Door-To-Door

Wait is this even a crime? What happened to the America I used to know?

A Gaffney woman said she was in a bind and needed some quick cash when she decided to go door-to-door selling pornographic videotapes.

Jeanette Ellis, 52, said she found a box of dirty movies on her street, and watched a few of them before she hit the streets.

"I said, 'I'll sell them to somebody who might want them,'" Ellis told FOX Carolina's Greg Funderburg. "I was going to get like $5 for them. There [were] like 15 tapes.

4 Gun Control – The Exemption for Hollywood The recent anti-civil liberties bills, signed by Andrew “Madness” Cuomo, to restrict our 2nd Amendment rights were pushed through so swiftly, that they forgot to exempt Hollywood from their onerous grasp. Now, Cuomo is pushing to exempt Hollywood from laws that apply to the hoi polloi. Clearly, making a spiffy movie with real guns (even when the combination of props and special effects would create the same effect) is far more important than the Constitutional right of the people to defend their lives and loved ones. That many Hollywood hacks are rabidly anti-civil liberties when it comes to the peasants, makes their stance a paragon of hypocracy. But Hollywood has long been exempt from many restrictions in California, particularly when it comes to the California Penal Code. For example, many limitations on firearms ownership, transfer, brandishing, and use do not apply to the making of motion pictures, and other such media, as seen by Section § 27535(a)(6), when: “Any motion picture, television, or video production company or entertainment or theatrical company whose production by its nature involves the use of a firearm.” More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=1657

Depends how long she was in that lane. Not sure we have that info. In any event, it's ludicrous that she was ticketed. The cop should have flashed his blues at her so she'd switch lanes and passed her by. So either he was a prick or she refused to pull out of his way when he drove up to her and/or mouthed off when he pulled her over. I'm thinking prick.

ND is good for many things, but it's chock-full of semi-tough trustafarians.

68 My general impression of Maryland drivers:  They're either treating the road like a speedway or doing exactly the speed limit.  And I've sat behind quite a few who were doing the speed limit in the left lane.  Since the road that causes me this trouble ends in a left exit for Maryland destinations, I'm guessing that they want to get in the lane they need to be in for the exit and will be happy to sit in it for several miles while we're all passing them on the right and giving them dirty looks on the way by.

Bristol County Republican Political Action Committee Mission Statement

Our primary purpose is to recruit and fund conservative and/or libertarian Republican candidates for offices whose districts are in, or whose districts overlap Bristol County.  For instance as of 2011, there are seven State Senate seats, fourteen State Representative seats, two Congressional seats, and several more local seats specific to the several cities and towns.  Capturing and holding these positions with individuals who will work for limited government and individual liberty will be our primary purpose.  To that end, we will engage in the following activities:

·         We will run regular, convenient training sessions open to the public to train candidates, campaign managers, and supporters to run effective races.

·         We will recruit people who have conservative and libertarian sensibilities but who are not fans of the current GOP to come enroll in the Party, to establish or take over their town and city Republican committees, and eventually help to transform the state Republican Committee for the 21st century. In essence, we will find the engaged citizens of the Commonwealth to "Be the Republican Party."

·         We will keep pressure on those legislators already in office by organizing coordinated phone, email, and mail campaigns, in order to ensure they remember who they work for, and what we want. It doesn't take long for someone to be in power for too long. We can't just send them and forget them. They will forget about us, too.

·         We will use the power of the revitalized Bristol County Republican Committee to gain and exercise standing in the various cities and towns, and use that standing to make changes to the nuts and bolts of the electoral process to minimize voter fraud. This includes supporting legislators who support Show ID to Vote initiatives.  It also includes making sure that there are trained poll watchers at the polling places.  And it involves making municipalities listen to their constituents, and move polling places to neutral locations

·         We will perform outreach to young people and other groups not normally associated with the GOP voter base to educate, inform and enroll these voters.

·         We will raise funds for these activities as well as for direct funding of candidates through phone, mail, and email campaigns.

·         We will make telephone facilities and other resources available to Republican candidates to get their message out to the public at election time.

"Not just any violation, but (a) a fairly expensive one, coming in at $90; and (b) a black mark against the driver's record for committing a moving violation."

Big deal. About a month ago, in my neighborhood (about 50 yards yards from where I live), I rolled through a stop sign while making a right turn (in plain view of a cop, who I noticed and then immediately ignored, stupid me). The fine for that was $163 plus 3 points. To keep the points off my license, I went to traffic school for 3 hours ($30 for the class). Then, when I went to pay for the ticket, I got whacked an extra $7 so the Clerk could 'process' my traffic school certificate and keep the points off my license. $200 bucks total for not coming to a full and complete stop at the stop sign at the beginning of MY F*CKING STREET. So, boo-hoo to Ms. $90. She's lucky.

78 Puhleeze! I did a dance for joy when I read about that woman getting a ticket. People who cruise in the left lane do so out of: 1. Ignorance of the law 2. Disregard for what is going on around them 3. An assholish belief that they can control the speeders around them 4. A combination of two of the above I friggin HATE when people cruise in the left lane.

Just the right mix for a sheltered boy of privilege to identify with the islamics.  Add to that the affluence of arabs in London in the 1970s & 1980s vs. the general decline of England's economy.

Trough on top that he list his first wife to a succession of islamics and you have a fine recipe for a Cuck (sorry, forgot the 'H') to identify with the stronger man.

I had a cop following me RIGHT on my bumper the other day in a 25mph zone on a two lane road. I saw the cop and was going the speed limit before during and after his little stunt. He turned on his turn signal and right before he turned he flashed his searchlight at me twice.

I have never been so pissed off at someone in my life. If he wanted me to go faster, sorry I am not doing that shit. I am not going to chance getting pulled over JUST so mr. coppey can go faster. I would have reported the vehicle had it been daytime allowing me to see the license plate.

There is actually some effect named after some dingbat on the beltway. The traffic engineers could not understand why there was always this jam on the beltway at a certain time. Turns out some bureaucrat going 55 in the fast lane would get out of work same time every day, fuck up the flow.

I should mention the Northway is 3 lanes, I guess.

But the part about pacing traffic stands.  It's always 10mph over the limit, and the cops turn a blind eye.

Who they DO go after is the ones who play Speed Racer weaving through traffic--because those assholes will create disruption in flow, causing the inevitable pileup.

This I learned in a long conversation with a Trooper one afternoon at a party.

I've heard that, but I've also heard they've started teaching it.  If that's the case it's too late for many, unfortunately.

Final complaint before I go to bed:  If traffic is crawling and my lane happens to move 20 feet while your lane next to mine is standing still, no, I'm not letting you in because you think that my lane is the magic moving lane.  I'll be stopped and you'll be moving shortly.  If there isn't an accident people changing lanes just because the one next to them "seems" to be moving faster is just making the overall problem worse.

Then you can read the comments and see people blaming the debt and all our problems on the rich and Republicans. There is no way out. And that's not the worst part. For the (redacted) who think they're doing the world a favor blocking traffic, you're creating a *far* greater hazard than the guy doing 10-15 over in the *passing* lane. Because remember, the real inflation rate is not the 1% or whatever the government claims, but actually around 10% - because of government running the printing presses and engaging in insane policies (ethanol most notably).

313 One cannot go the speed limit. It is simply not physically possible.

The reason cops will let people cruise by at +10mph over the speed limit is that their guns are only good for +/- 5 mph and the drivers speedometer is good for +/- 5 mph.

It's also why the write off 10 mph on a ticket.

If one wants to challenge a speeding ticket (usually not financially prudent unless  you are working off some DUI points) you can spend a few hundred on an attourney who will question when the last time the gun was calibrated (not since new), the FCC license on the gun, and the status of the vehicle ticketed.

Defective Equipment... another few hundred for the judge's take.

356 The NVRA provides a federal form for registration in which the registrant is required to check a box indicating U.S. citizenship and to sign the form under penalty of perjury.

But the state law, Proposition 200, which passed in 2004, requires any registrant who does not have a driverÂ’s license issued after 1996 or a non-operating license to provide documents such as a copy of a birth certificate or a passport.

“The case is intrinsically important,” says election law expert Edward B. Foley of the Moritz School of Law at Ohio State University, “because it asks whether a state can add a requirement to prove U.S. citizenship at the time of voter registration, beyond what the federal government requires under the NVRA”.

“This is an important case that is under the radar screen, because it involves not only the issue of immigration but also the regulation of voting rights,” Foley says. “More broadly, how do we make the rules of elections and who gets to write the rules — the federal government or the states?”

Groups such as the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) say the law puts an additional burden on voters. They argue that a voter registrant who submits the federal form but does not provide additional documentation required by the state law is rejected for voter registration.

In court briefs, lawyers for MALDEF say: “Although states are authorized to design and use their own mail voter registration form, nothing in the statute permits states to use their forms to the exclusion of the federal form.”

357 Mish delivers the goods from of his readers: ...a quick review of the most recent financial statements of the four publicly listed Cypriot banks as shown on their websites, it is notable that a simple alternative proposal could protect the country from bankruptcy and make its depositors whole. By wiping out 100% of the equity, 100% of the bondholders, and 17% of the banksÂ’ liability to central banks, the Cypriots could stabilize their banking system (based on the 5.8Bn EUR figure being discussed) without penalizing local savers. Instead of raising 5.8Bn EUR from depositors, it could raise 1.4Bn from combined market cap, 2.0Bn from bondholders and preferred shareholders, and 2.4Bn of the 14.3Bn in combined Central Bank loans (Cypriot and ECB) it has on its books. This assumes zero contribution from the Cypriot subsidiaries of foreign banks so it may be conservative. If the banking system is bankrupt, anything other than an Alice-in-Wonderland recovery system suggests that the order of liquidation is shareholders, preferred shareholders, debt holders, Central Bank creditors, and THEN depositors. If 10Bn or even 17Bn EUR is truly required, then coincidentally up to 17.7Bn EUR is available from equity holders, debt holders, and Central Bank creditors without impairing a euro cent from depositors. http://is.gd/QVC7V6 This whole fiasco isn't unavoidable for depositors. It's a naked financial rape designed to make the bank's rich bondholders whole and instead hose the little guy and perhaps Russian non-residents.

370 In the days of '49 when times were hard
I had a sawed off shotgun and a deck of cards
A double breasted suit and a Stetson hat
And every time you saw me I looked just like that

Went through six inches of sh*t and a foot of mud
Came to a saloon called the Bucket of Blood
Went in and asked for something to eat
Bartender gave me a glass of muddy water
And a hard ass piece of meat

I said, listen here buddy don't you know who I am?
The bartender said, "No, couldn't give a goddamn
Not a single word was spoken
Not another word was said
Then I shot six holes in that mutha f*kkah's head

Then this little old lady came up and said, "Bartender, please."
I said, "He's laying behind the bar with his mind at ease."
She said, "My son, my son, he couldn't be dead!"
I said, "Just count the holes in that mutha f*kkah's head."

380 Nobody seemed to care much about the Vikings episode tonight but I'll chip in my 2 cents:

I like that the show depicts some aspects of Viking history accurately; the Thing, Jury Trials and Verdicts, navigation innovations.  I like the character development.  I like the show enough to keep watching it but . . . they make some egregious errors which make me suspect some of the other cultural things they depict (and I don't much care for) may also be false.  I also question whether any Viking leader would have summarily executed the community's blacksmith for forging a legally bought and paid for anchor.  #1.  no more ironworks; and #2. what law was violated?  #3. absolutely no blowback???

Worst of all, they've depicted the sailboat we've seen with a tiller on the port side.  This is just glaringly wrong.  Its a small detail but when you consider that the modern world uses the term 'starboard' to mean the right side of a vessel and that  the term 'starboard' developed from Viking 'steerboards' which were always on the right side of their ships . . . its just disappointing.

Anyway, I like the characters and I'll keep watching even though I sometimes wince.  FWIW

390 Since I know most of the liberals will not be since they live in fantasy land. (The ones I know here in Seattle are all LIV liberals and believe everything could be resolved with just taxing the rich "just a little bit more," so their fair share is upped to 95%).

391 Anywhoo, see you all tomorrow. Gotta get some sleep to actually work for my money. Mine doesn't grow on printing presses and tax receipts like the welfare queens.

402 I have to go to bed. Again. But here's something to chew on form the most recent comment at market-ticker.org

Cyprus vote delayed until Friday - Cyprus TV.

No word on whether the bank holiday lasts all week.

Lots of discussion over there that the plunge protection team is out in full force. To prove the strength of the markets, or something.

403 One more comment:

Bank holiday week until Friday via @ZeroHedge on Twitter.

I don't twitter, so I'm taking there word for it.

This obviously will do wonders for confidence.

406 Sorry, got to side with the police on the ticket.  Can't stand the left lane vigilante.

407 The left lane driving/blocking seems to be a popular hobby in these parts.

Posted by: BignJames at March 18, 2013 03:37 AM (Sg0G/)

408 I concur with the two posters above. Fuck the left lane hog. If conditions were that bad, move to the right and slow down. The last couple times I drove down to DC, they were so bad I thought the center lane was the passing lane in MD. I think they are more dangerous on major highways than speeders or texters.

Posted by: elliot at March 18, 2013 07:13 AM (V97CL)

409 "63 in a 65 warrants a ticket?"

In the left (passing) lane of an interstate highway? Yes.

The left lane is for passing.  If you aren't passing, get the fuck over.  I have seen several major accidents (two in the last six months, and one of the earlier ones involved fatalities) caused by the havoc created by left lane vigilantes. All of them continued on their merry way.

They either do it on purpose to slow down traffic, or they are so blissfully unaware of the danger they are causing that they should be stripped of their driving privileges right there on the side of the road, and their car should be burned to the wheel hubs.
