Neo-neocon: The Long Reach of Family and Time

The past isn't even all that past when it comes to family memories. Often we're just a generation or two away from major historical events:

Please let that sink in for a moment: my own grandfather's sister was born in 1838. Not only that, but she lived to be over 100 years old dance at my parents' wedding. She appears in photos of the occasion, a small figure wearing a black headscarf, almost impossibly old and wrinkled but smiling.

I never met her; she died some years before I was born. But what tales she might have told! One of the difficulties of reaching back in time by talking to the elderly is that the young rarely have the inclination to do it before it's too late. Old people-who cares what they have to say?

Luckily for me my mother's side is a long-lived line and so I was able to know my great-grandmother fairly well until she died at 94. She was sharp and feisty right up until the end - think of a savvier version of Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies. She was born around 1902 and I remember her mentioning once in passing that her grandmother had personal memories of Union troops arriving at their farm during the Civil War. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to follow-up so this memory is now gone forever. :-(

And here is a photograph of a Revolutionary War soldier, Conrad Heyer, taken in 1852 when he was over 100 years old. Quite possibly this makes him the earliest-born human to ever be photographed.

He was approximately 103 when photographed, having been born in 1749. He was reportedly the first white child born in Waldoboro, Maine, then a German immigrant community. He served in the Continental Army under George Washington during the Revolutionary War, crossing the Delaware with him and fighting in other major battles. He eventually bought a farm and retired to Waldoboro, where he happily regaled visitors with tales of his Revolutionary War exploits until his dying day.

Our Upside Down Bizarro World: Students Tackle Gunman, Get Suspended From School

Citizen, self-defense is for the authorities:

The student said the suspect, a football player, threatened to shoot a teammate because he had been arguing with his friend.

Authorities confirmed to WFTX the weapon was indeed loaded, and the arrest report stated the suspect, identified by WVZN-TV as Quadryle Davis, was "pointing the gun directly" at the other student and "threatening to shoot him."

That's when, the teen told the station, he and two others tackled the suspect and wrestled the gun away. The next day, all three were suspended.

And be sure and follow the example of this good citizen at 1:00:

More Bizarro World News: Uganda Returns Misused Aid Money to Sweden

Uganda has reimbursed Sweden some 24 million kronor ($3.75 million) in aid that had been misappropriated by senior officials.

The amount is about half of the 45 million kronor refund that the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) had sought.

...An investigation by the auditor general of Uganda last year found that a total of 86 million kronor in aid had been funnelled into private accounts linked to the prime minister's office in Kampala.

The Dog that Didn't Bark

Or data in this case:

Let's fast-forward a half-century from the world of fiction to the very real world of military strategy. During World War II, Allied B-29 bombers were being shot down with great frequency. A mathematician named Abraham Wald, was given a challenging problem by military officials. How could these planes be optimally reinforced with armor plating? There were tradeoffs to consider. Every addition of plating added to the weight of the plane, decreasing it's performance characteristics. Therefore, reinforcements needed to be added only to the most vulnerable areas of the planes.

Wald was presented with data from planes returning from bombing missions. The data showed the pattern and frequency of hits from enemy gunfire. Conventional thinking led many to believe that Wald would recommend the reinforcement of those areas receiving the greatest number of hits.

Counter-intuitively, Wald recommended just the opposite, the reinforcement of those areas with the least frequency of bullet holes. Wald's profound insight, in the spirit of Sherlock Holmes, was to focus on the unseen. He grasped that the returning aircraft were the survivors, receiving enemy fire in non-vulnerable areas. The downed aircraft (which were not part of the data set) were the ones that had received the fatal hits, most likely to the remaining areas. It was those remaining areas (the ones free of bullet holes in the surviving planes) that needed the extra armor plating.

Most of the data we have in life is incomplete and you should always consider the 'unseen' that never even made it into the data set. Or else fall prey to survivorship bias.

Not Even Pretending Anymore: WaPo Eliminates Ombudsman Position

Oh noes! Without an ombudsman, how will the Post mock apologize for the entire paper's staff voting for Obama? Justify its hit pieces on any candidate with an (R) after his name? Simultaneously advocate for gay marriage while claiming to be objective (after previously admitting how deeply the paper was in the tank for Obama)? And last but not least, when on earth will that backlog of corrections from 2008 and 2009 ever be completed?

Yep now they won't have to waste their (and our) time trying to explain away their bias and failure to check facts-too-good-to-check.

Archaeological Hairstyling

Based on paintings and sculptures ancient hairstyles for women were complicated - so much so that it was long assumed they were actually wigs. But hair stylist and amateur scholar Janet Stephens shows that they were quite achievable with just bodkins and string. Here's how to get that vestal virgin look from 1800 years ago.

My paternal grandfather was born in 1870 and died in 1937. My father and his brother who was then 19 and 17, had to take care of my grandmother and my father's sisters. (Yes, my grandfather married late and yes, it was a May-December marriage.) Their eldest son died as an infant, on the boat to America. They went through the whole Ellis Island, Lower East Side tenement thing before heading to the Midwest to become farmers.

It amazed me as a child when I realized my grandfather was born 5 years after the end of the Civil War. What came to amaze me even more as I grew older was the idea of being responsible for a family at the age of 19. My dad and uncle did farm chores in the early morning - then went to their factory jobs and came home and worked on the farm. And then came the war. When I think of what a ditz I was at 19, I am filled with the greatest respect for my old man, may he rest in peace.

Folks, do the same with your elderly loved ones. She was a schoolgirl when Lindbergh toured the country after his flight. And she flew aboard the Concorde later in life. The amount of technological change during her lifetime was amazing, but the curve gets steeper and those of us living now will probably see an even greater amount of change.

164 Let me tell you something about being old. When I got my first car we had 8-track tapes. Big and bulky, full of moving parts. And we would ride around in our Dodge Valiant (in line 6 cylinder) with the top down and listen to those 8 track tapes. "Conway Twitty Goes Disco" I think it was.

And the thing about those 8 track tapes is that they would change direction to get the most tape mileage. Sometimes that direction change would occur mid-song. Just "clunk" and there you were in silence for a good 3 to 4 seconds. Then you could resume singing "Bye Bye Miss American Pie" or "Horse with No Name" whatever the heck it was.

And we loved it.

While that's true, we're expecting it and to some extent are inured to it. Think of all the things in your life you take for granted now - indeed, find indispensible- that you didn't own or imagine owning 15 years ago - cell phones and HD TV, to name 2 of the most obvious. Compare that to the long lag between Lindbergh's flight and the time commerical flights for the masses become commonplace. When I was a child in the '60's, it still was rather uncommon for blue collar people to fly anywhere. I remember when I took my first commercial flight to see my aunt in Tucson in the mid-70's, my mother insisted that I dress up because it was still A Very Big Deal to fly. My old electric typewriter put in a lot of years before it ended up in the junk pile - more years than I expect the computer I'm typing on to last.

225 *Why does your govt seem saner than ours now? *
It helps that the reformed Conservatives have a majority now and that your federal government is so much worse in comparison. The dollars being at par now also means that inflation isn't hurting us as much as it is you especially when almost all of our winter fruits and vegetables are imported. Our banks weren't making bad loans; and our federal finances were so bad 20 years ago that even our Liberals knew they had to fix things (like when Moody's etc. threatened our credit rating) although they mainly did that by cutting the military and cutting what are called "transfer payments" from the feds to the provincial governments so that the provincial governments took the blame for service cuts and not the feds. It helped that the Conservatives were running Ontario at the time and were making major service cuts because the far left New Democrats had wiped out the economy in their 5 years preceding the Conservatives' two successive majority governments.

*Do Canadians make fun of Americans now?*
Our lib-left always has (copying the same things your lib-left says!) but there's not enough conservative pop culture here to go after the socializing of the U.S. and our MSM blows Obama as much as your own does (unlike the Brit MSM even including lib-left rags like the Guardian that at least attack him from the left).

*I shudder in advance at the answer I expect from you.*
See? That wasn't so bad, was it?

*P.S. you still have some 'splainin to do regarding curling.*
I've never played but I like to watch it especially at a bar. I'd liken viewing it to watching snooker on TV--it's not exciting like hockey but you watch it to appreciate the skill required in the shots.

In my lifetime, we have gone from putting a man on the moon to now we can't even make an easy decision on what fat to trim from the bloated government.

I have some of his paperwork, his military Missal, one of his service medals (a second is missing--I don't know if it was ever issued), my grandmother's Silver Cross for his death, and his memorial plaque.

I'm glad yours survived to tell his stories.

260 Well I learned something this weekend. I was at a convention for work all weekend, Saturday night after the award presentation the company had free drinks at the hotel bar and I indulged. Freely. One of my coworkers starts asking about some of the thing that's going things are going on politically in this country. I'm trying to carefully explain and fully give the history of things like the Frankfurt school and Bill Ayres and the Weathermen. Then I was trying to articulate some concerns I have with the way this administration seems to be eroding our rights daily, a conversation I can have logically and calmly and be fairly convincing most of the time.

ButÂ…..

I learned, to my sorrow, if you try to do this when youÂ’re drunk (or at least if I try to), you wind up sounding completely batshit insane.  Seriously. IÂ’m wondering how heÂ’s going to look at me tomorrow. Oh well. At least I'll be sober then, and if he really cares, I can explain it again. Properly.

Still cold by your standards.  March is my favorite month.  Warming up.  Days are noticeably longer.  Still lots of snow and plenty of places to play.  Usually sunny and bright.

No good gigs.  Playing with a band that picked me up cuz they needed a bass player.  They play a mix of strange things, which is OK.  But, the singer likes 60's protest music.  I have to bite my tongue really hard.

At some point during the weekend she happened to mention that she had been working on my family tree, my maternal side.  Yeah - and the combination of high tech and the slide back into feudalism (feckless political "elites" ruling over an increasingly illiterate, apathetic population) is frightening. Hell to call it feudalism is to insult the Middle Ages - at least European serfs had the consolations of religion and close-knit families.

335 Conservatives are cowards who fear reality and see a boogeyman around every corner.

Your worldview isn't reality. Let me guess your primary 'news' sources are Maddow and Stewart.

Don't need boogeymen to see where your vaunted ideologies have led in the past. We look to history, not myths.

One of the more interesting things to ponder about liberalism is how its adherents generally focus significant energy on learning how to do things that at best do no good for anyone else, and at worse damage society as a whole.

If every strongly political liberal disappeared tomorrow, would you notice save for the lack of new movies?

You'll note that this was, The Question. No other part of the rant had an interrogative mark. Can anyone make sense of that sentence? Looks like it had some words left out, or something. How do you do, do do, d'yafter?

I'm picturing it in a puce or lavender leotard, carnevale mask, big question mark -- better, an interrobang -- in glitter on the hollowed chest, each inquiry ending in a cackle and wheeze. It thinks it wants to kill itself. Like Sphynx in Oedipus, y'know.

It's probably easier now more than ever. There's the obvious -- ancestry.com. The Mormon church keeps good records. Also the Soc. Security Death Index can be helpful. My grandfather did a lot of genealogical research back in the 70's -- had to drive to the big city and pore through county records, deeds, obits and historical documents at the time -- stuff we can do right from our computers. Another thought: most counties have their own historical societies -- a good place to start.

Heh. Either that or she could dress as a boobeh. Either costume would be an accurate description of the womym wearing it.

Really, I've never been as embarrassed by my own gender as I have been during the last year. It started with Fluke and now it's moved on to dolts posting pics of their cooters online and thinking that they can be in the NFL because they're special snowflakes who can do anything a man can do. It's like someone put stupid pills in the Midol bottles.

This *is* mine, and I do want to use it someday, so please keep that in mind (and let me know if The Simpsons already did it):  imagine you woke up dead, no more, an ex-human, pinin' for the fjords, but you did in fact wake up.  You look like you, act like you, talk and think like you did, but you're stuck as an observer of the people and places that were once yours.  Just a basic ghost, right?  You can only haunt for so long without going mad and being stuck for eternity, so why not wander?  Now imagine that you become more and more corporeal and alive as you get around people who are 4, 5, 6 degrees of separation from everyone who ever knew you before you died, almost like being alive again, but that as soon as they made the connection between current you and your deceased self, you would revert to silenced and invisible Square One.  It's got some potential, no?

Yeah, that's not bad. What are you looking for, exactly? Question- the "ghost" becomes more corporeal and eventually CAN interact with people, at some stage... but only if he chooses? He doesn't become "real" and visible again to others by default, via time etc?

495 Yeah, that's not bad. What are you looking for, exactly? Question- the "ghost" becomes more corporeal and eventually CAN interact with people, at some stage... but only if he chooses? He doesn't become "real" and visible again to others by default, via time etc?

Totally involuntary...I'm thinking he becomes more real to the people around him as A) the people are themselves very near death, or B) the people around him are so far removed from him that he never existed in their perception and in that way is no longer precisely dead.  The big question I'm trying to answer right now is what to do with all that.  Are there advantages to this new state, and if so, will they be used for good or ill?  Any possibility of short or long-term redemption?  I'm not sure where it leads at this point.  Like I said, it started as a strange dream that I remembered, and that's about as far as it's gotten.

500 No body was fat in the '60's? I beg to differ but the incidence was markedly less.

I have thought quite a while what is so different with how we live and what we eat from even as little as 30 years ago to cause such an increase in obesity.

I don't believe it's the amount of tv or computer time although that may be a partial factor, how do you account for people who have gotten fat later in life that were public figures and can be shown to have stayed active? Particularly popular tv/movie stars from the '70's who now are porked out. (shatner, I'm looking at you.)

I began looking into the possibility that the ubiquitous use of the microwave oven, may be responsible.

First by not cooking our food almost the same way since we discovered fire, are we causing changes in the food we ingest? Does the process of heat cooking render food differently enough that it is not absorbed the same or that it now has higher or lower levels of necessary enzymes/proteins etc. Are the nutrients destroyed by the microwave process?

There may be evidence that this is the case. I'm not talking about direct absorption of electro magnetic waves. Just how they excite the food to induce heating. Does that process change the nutrient value of the food?

It IS one of the major changes that the country (and other countries but to a lesser degree) underwent since the '70's and affects everyone rich or poor, famous or unknown and is not necessarily affected by ones wealth or status since most kitchens have microwaves as standard equipment.

Little research has ever been done on the results of microwave cooking. Russia supposedly banned Microwave ovens in the '70's as being unsafe but that may have been an oven construction issue.

Thoughts anyone? Put your tinfoil hats on, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

You might have something there.I'd stick with it. I have a shit ton of probably boring questions about how it works and stuff, with people and objects. I have a feeling that should this transition factor get fully worked out, you may not have to worry too much about the bigger picture stuff. That might just about write itself. For example, is he a ghost to person #1, then runs into person #2 and he is real? What happens when #1 shows up again? That sort of stuff. If you get the how and why of that, you could go in a number of different directions and still have a good book.

Take your tinfoil hats off, the ride is over.  Microwaving food has been proven to make less-tasty meals, but that's where the similarities between the microwave and other more traditional methods end.  Seeing as how the definitions of "overweight" and "obese" have been moving targets over at least the last 50 years, along with the widespread adoption of the absolutely useless BMI number (which was created to describe a population, not individuals), there is no good apples-to-apples dataset which demonstrates that we are or are not fatter since the post-WWII boom.  Americans were thinner prior to that, but it should be kept in mind that many were on the verge of fucking starving.

Yes but I was struck by how similar all economic levels of society have been affected.

Yes there are larger numbers of fat people in groups that tend to sedentary lifestyles but there are large numbers of fatter people at levels of society that in the past usually didn't have that many fat people.

Of course I haven't done any statistical analysis of any numbers. It's just a gut feeling that people we wouldn't expect to be fat or get fat are getting fat or fatter than they used to in the past.

It's very insidious because it's so wide spread. (sorry) We can't all have decided to just start sitting around.

When I quit smoking, I ballooned like the good year blimp and yet my activity level was the same UNTIL I got fatter and it became a chore and I had a knee injury which knocked my activity way down.

I think it's more than just lifestyle. That is a factor but this is affecting too many people from too many different areas of the country and who live entirely different lives.

If you want to see obesity correlated with something, look at Federal interference with food markets. The "food pyramid" is a recipe for early death, food subsidies fund shit we shouldn't eat, and school lunches are poster-children for homeschooling.

517 First, I have NO data. Just anecdotal "evidence" of my memory. (I traveled all over the country from 1970 till 1990 and saw a lot of different areas, people from different economic strata and background)

It's my opinion that overall we've gotten fatter as a nation. Not just a certain group or geographic area which I think would be more likely if it was sleep deprivation or other work/economic related factors.

It is also my opinion that people who one would think are doing their best to retain a certain body weight haven't been able to do so.

It's also the difficulty of losing weight and the sometimes unexplained weight gain with no obvious factor involved.

I dunno. Me, I'm going to try not using the microwave for meals and see what happens.

I just thought it would be an amusing topic to see what anyone else thought.

Good point.  For several hundreds of years, writers have anecdotally observed that people who ate grain or starch-based diets got fat, whereas those who stuck to meats and vegetables did not.  Regardless of what anybody thinks about Atkins, et. al, there is good data which indicate that the modern USDA food pyramid is a recipe for fatness, independent of activity level and income.

Thoughts anyone? Put your tinfoil hats on, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

I'd place it on four factors: Food, Fashion, Muscular fitness and hygiene.

Humans in most of history weren't thin because they were healthy, they were thin because they were malnourashed.  Height has been growing over the past century in the West as starvation has receded.  Weight has done the same thing.

Modern fashions aren't very flattering to most men or women because they're built around skinny models.  As a result, a woman with curves but in good shape can still appear pudgy or worse.

People are less likely to engage in manual labor or outdoor activities which in turn means less developed musculature.  As a result, any fat accumulated just hangs there, instead of having a frame.

Hygiene, in this case our protection against intestinal parisites, has increased, meaning that there are fewer of them in the general population to cause problems and also to keep their hosts thin by redirecting nuitrients.

Yeah, it's interesting. It's got some classic aspects involved that could lead to a good storytelling payoff. Get the mechanism etc worked out and it could go anywhere. Maybe in a few directions at the same time. It sounds like something you should take a few hours to bounce ideas around with a couple of people who also write, perhaps. And trust. It sounds potentially complex and this may not be the best way to get ideas like that across. Too slow.

Posted by: otho at March 03, 2013 10:35 PM (yBF/9)

525 The microwave is just a way to get the water molecules in the food vibrating to produce heat. Just a concentrated version of how the sun heats stuff. The microwave isn't going to make you fat. What you put in the microwave is what can make you fat. Or not.

It should come as no surprise for anyone who has studied the history of government interference that dietary recommendations is yet another area where they got it wrong. They took bad science and amplified it. For instance, the research in the 60s that lead people to believe that a couple of fried eggs at breakfast was going to kill them. It has since been shown the methodology was highly flawed. It took almost forty years for contradictory studies to be given credence and to reexamine the original research.

526 Posted by: epobirs at March 04, 2013 02:36 AM (/qEpG)

Don't forget that just last year dietary SCIENCE! experts came out with results, after a rigorous 20+-year longitudinal study, demonstrating that salt intake had no correlation with longevity.  All that, after those with basic knowledge of kidney function, e.g. many doctors and most chemists, had understood the underlying concepts the entire time.  It turns out that drinking water while consuming salt is a good idea.  Whodathunk?

Posted by: StPatrick_TN at March 03, 2013 10:42 PM (lJJMb)

527 Another food problem is that our mental feedback mechanisms aren't designed for the modern world and plenitude. They were evolved to reward us for finding certain high value item amid scarcity.

It wasn't that long ago that a traditional Christmas treat in the UK was an orange, something we can easily consume year round in the US. I used to wonder what inspired the Terry Chocolate Orange that is a modern holiday staple. This is the sphere you slam against a counter top before opening to separate the segments. When you learn how hard an orange was to come by just a few generations ago, all becomes clear.

Sodium can be a problem if you have the wrong genes. I have a high bloodpressure problem and I can definitely feel the effect if I overindulge.

OTOH, I've frequently had to remind my nagging mother of what happens when a person succeeds in eliminating salt from their diet: they die! Sodium plays a critical role in the electrical signals of the autonomic nervous system. Without that your brain cannot tell your heart to beat and other annoyances.

I believe the salt scare was really a side effect of widespread smoking. My mother has mentioned how appalled she was by the number of cigar chomping men from her parent's generation would douse their food with salt without tasting it first. t's remarkable how less saltand sugar you add to stuff when your senses aren't dulled.

No "magic" or arbitrary stuff.  It doesn't have to in any way feasible. Come up with a set of rules that work the way the story needs to and go from there. The mechanism just has to work within the internal logic of the story. There's also a few different backgrounds/frameworks you could tell it in. Maybe a couple of different genres that it could work in. Hope it pans out.

562 Repaired my neighbors canoe yesterday. He paid me with two pounds of awesome pork from his smoker. I think that was my first preapocalyptic barter.

564 561 OSP,

That may hardly be a joke.  One of the nice bennies of the shop down in Louisiana I worked at was that we had two smokehouses handy and most of the crew hunted.  Moron Industries is gonna need a smokehouse.

Ya know,

I so wanted to jump into the thread on ACE's post/review of "The Master."

I mean, I was there for the work-up of that project at Panavision. Mr. Anderson had booked the sound stage for 3 days to test various cameras and lenses. He had brought in all his principles, Hoffman, Phoenix and Adams.

I was to manage the sound stage and take care of any issues that cropped up during the test. The 1st day was kinda edgy because although the same crew was present, the DP Elswit had taken a pass on the project which ment a new Director of Photography a Mr. Mihai (Me-a) Malaimare was tasked to work with P.T, (most all the crew just refered to him as "P.T."). It was very interesting to watch them work out the mechanics as they tried out various cameras and just tray upon tray of lenses with first a Panaflex 35, then LX2's and holy crap a 65 that I swear was last used filming Kubrick's 2001. and the specific lighting for this and the filming right at sunset outside for that and just to add an even crazier twist on day 2, an impromptu music video after the days work was done for Fiona Apple which stretched us all into the wee hours of the morning. By Day 3, I SSOOOO wanted to be on the crew, I mean after all, this was the digtal age

and This guy was going to do this ON FILM!!!

Note to ACE: Your comments re: post production color enhancments were not probably done post but were in fact most likely virgin film technique with very little help needed on the back end.

No I still have not seen the "Film."
