Obama's impotent 'sham across the bow'. Not only have the leaks weakened the value of any strike now, but telling your enemy that you're only going to launch a few missiles and then hit the links won't do any good. Top. Men.
This administration already has had a habit of spilling the classified beans for political gain, on drone "kill lists" and cyberwarfare against Iran for instance.Post-college SATBut in previewing his all-for-show mini-attack on Syria, Obama might as well be telegramming Hitler that there are these five beaches in Normandy where something interesting might happen at 6:30 a.m. on June 6.
I can already hear the calls of racism. 'Post-college SAT' aims to level the playing field in crowded job market.
That test, CLA+ (shorthand for Collegiate Learning Assessment), is designed with the dual knowledge that prospective employers are increasingly souring on GPA for evaluating college grads, and students who take Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) can develop competent job skills without ever earning a college degree.Scored on a 1,600-point scale, the CLA+ “represents the latest threat to the fraying monopoly that traditional four-year colleges have enjoyed in defining what it means to be well educated,” the Wall Street Journal’s Douglas Belkin reported Sunday in the front-page article “Are You Ready for the Post-College SAT?”

Unprecedented Heat

Unprecedented heat causes Poudre School District to close. 88 degrees. On August 30th. Unprecedented? I'm sure a three day weekend had nothing to do with this. Here's the school district website. They better cancel next Friday. It is forecast to be 90 degrees.

Pretty cool. Trulia has updated their maps to feature hurricane, tornado and wildfire hazards. No word yet when they'll have a hazard map of progressive policies.

So far, she's had sex with 284 men, according to Fakt.pl and didn't let the fact she has a serious boyfriend stop her.
He told the Polish language website he was "not thrilled" with her unusual hobby, but had no choice and "had to come to terms" with it.
I have a solution: how about he dump her and find a respectable girl? Or is that too patriarchal for our post-masculine world?

Yeah. The first one was not up my alley. It was really fun at times and the puzzle-solving was fun, but anything outside of a town was oddly boring to me. I didn't like it and my buddies think I'm crazy.

Assassin's Creed 1 sucks compared to 2 and Brotherhood. Much less "out of town" areas. It is really hard to go back and play any of that after trying the others and their much better pacing and mission variety.

A new trend has emerged in liberal online magazines: Have some young staff writer pen an article so silly and laden with progressive buzzwords and tropes that even their loyal prog readership mocks them in the comments. This attracts attention to the website.
Slate has done this twice that I know of. The Atlantic has also. Their latest being two columns, one a continuation of the first wherein the writer tries desperately to explain what he meant in the first column.
It's a double duty click magnet in the sense that it's about Miley Cyrus and also it's accusing both her and Janis Joplin of being racists. The comments in the second article are hilarious and running about 99% against the author.

Maybe. Kind of depends on what other games you let him play. You are sort of a good guy, though you kill people often bloodily and you are discouraged from killing innocents such that if you were to start you would be "killed" quickly. It is violent and a little bloody, though not really gore bloody.

Biggest problem is that the Emperor does not have the same military power he started with.
They've changed doctrine, from large battle, to Insurgency ops... and Strykers will SUCK against Tanks...
Yes.... we still have Tanks... but not the same skilled crews we had 10 years ago... and you go to War with the Army you have...
Navy is down to what.... 120 Surface Combat Ships?
Air Force Levels.... don't follow them... but not good as many squadrons are offline waiting for the F-35...
Add in already committed troops?
This is not the Bush 41 Military he was handed by Ronnie Raygun...

Yeah. The "assassination scenes" are much more "cool" than they are graphic. The character, (kid), has to think. The problem-solving is good.
You might want to "ban" him from the internet, so as not to allow him to cheat!... LOL..
The violence factor is there, but it is more "spectacular" than it is "graphic-how-to".
I didn't like it, (got bored),but many, many, many gamers do. They're probably more correct than me.
It is a good game for "gamers" and I'd allow it for a kid that was twelve-or-older.

I live in FC, and my co-worker got a text message yesterday about the schools closing, and she said, "You've got to be fucking kidding me." And of course we traded stories about our school days, and how rare snow days were, let alone "gee, kinda warm tomorrow" days.
Not a day goes by where I am not at least once muttering "the fuck?!" about some stupid bullshit thing or another.
And, FYI, today did not even get close to this horrific high temperature they were all so ascared of. I would call it a pleasant late summer day.

The snows were so heavy the road linking radar to site was blocked for two days. Luckily I had rotated away from that site a week before that happened so I won't. Be thankful.

There was one of the Quake series that was like that, I think. The earlier ones had led you to expect a nice alien shooting gallery. I could never start my car when it got below minus 20 or so. There was a stretch of weather we had up there where day time highs were in the minus teens. Wind chill was close to minus 60. I was outside in the driveway burning charcoal under my oil pan to warm up the engine. It worked. I remember stepping out of the house and your face immediately got hard like ice. throwing water in the air was cool too, it turned into snow immediately as it left the glass.

...first
I wouldn't play the second without the original. It still costs more than the original. The same goes for a few other games. (Mass Effect... but, lol) The original usually owns the trilogy, but I'm just being "anal".
Far-Cry 3 would be the first "out-of-order" game I've played, because the improvement was so big.
Beside $34.00 worth of gift-cards, I'll be getting four games for ten bucks or less.
One of those games could be:
-Deus Ex, H.R.
-Saints Row
-Prototype
...I've narrowed it down to those three games.

Wow. Real courage, to come say that in a dead thread.
I think the commenters here are wonderfully intelligent and witty, and that the banter here approaches masterpiece level at times. Mr "these are not the cool kids" has failed to understand what goes on here. My own opinion of The Thread, and the ones in the past that have resembled it, is that people here use Ace's posts, even the greatest ones, as a chance to do their usual banter, and, at times, Ace takes offense. That's understandable on both sides. He turns out a masterpiece and commenters are riffing about how much modern music sucks, and he naturally feels underappreciated. But the reality is that we're used to his awesomeness, and no one wants to be a suck up, so no one tells him how awesome he is. But most of us know it, and see it.

LizLem. Assassin's Creed 3 is ok. The storyline is ok. The combat system is excellent especially when you go with the tomahawk. Its really cool that when the soldiers line up from a distance to make a musket shot and you grab the closest bad guy for a human shield. The ship combat is very cool.
The character of Connor sucks. He is bland and they eventually have him become disillisioned with the Revolutionary cause. I think there overall portrayals of the Patriots though was pretty good.

Really nice place, though. Loggers' roleo, and a winter biathlon course.
For a while after Bethlehem works shut down, it looked like Buffalo's snow load was decreasing. People joked bitterly over whether it was the sudden lack of steam or the sudden lack of people that changed the climate. But in a decade it was back to normal.
Back around 1948 there was a tsunami in Conneaut. Youse can look it up.

1942 - Two seiche-related waves unexpectedly batter the Ohio shore between Bay Village and Conneaut. Madison-on-the-Lake receives the brunt of the waves. The first wave ranges between 4 and 20 feet, and the second, following 15 minutes later, is 6 to 8 feet high. The phenomenon kills seven people.
You know, magazine feature writers really suck. This is like the "Healthiest Cities" surveys done by Men's Health, that measures stuff like how tough the bar smoking enforcement is and how many taverns have been driven out of business.
I was taught in grade school that northern Ohio was immune to earthquakes. Why, the bedrock was all the wrong kind, nothing to worry about. When we had a Richter 3-4, it was epicentered under the physics department of the high school, strangely fitting. The next one knocked down the stone sign outside my office building. Never believe nothing nobody tells you.
I also almost got the job of cabin boy on the Edmund Fitzgerald, but that's a sea tale for another time.

One guy called my vote interpretyation "sort-of-communist", and I reamed him a new asshole Publicly and privately.

Really, the envirotards are pissed off about the Keurigs?
I'd not my major objection to them is they're horribly cost inefficient. But I don't want to ban them, I just mock everyone who buys one.
Even if I waste 1/cup of coffee per day (by making 6 instead of 5) every day, all year (which is unlikely really.) I still probably save 50% of what a Keurig would cost me over the same period of time.
And I get better coffee.

It's the whole HBO Girls thing again. Remember how he insisted that everybody just hadda pay attention to that series because it was important stuff and we needed to "engage" women and tweens or something. While simultaneously insisting he didn't watch the show himself.
Glossing over the fact that only a small percentage of the increasing fragmented popular culture bother to consume that product -- or any other single event.
Turning the pop cultural equivalent of a "your favorite band sucks" internet debate into some Sicilian blood feud seems a tad excessive.

Also had a rusty Volvo, and several rusty but trusty Datsuns and Mazdas and Toyotas.

I'm a CPA, and that profession has gone into so many scams, schemes, navel-gazings, counting angels-on-pinheads gyrations over the last 10-15 years that I'm almost ashamed to admit it -- mainly, as you may have guessed, because of governmental interference. The whole "Arthur Andersen must die because we need a scalp for Enron" thing.
Now, I get that there are a lot of good people in medicine -- just as there are a lot of good people in accounting and auditing -- but the overall culture of both professions is....well, as George Bernard Shaw famously put it: "All professions are conspiracies against the laity."

It's not just undercoat. Body design plays a huge role, as does quality of metal used. Poorly-applied, or poor quality undercoat can partially peel, and form pockets that trap salt-laden mud against the metal, and actually promote rust.

Yes, and right up until then you could sit in a dark garage and listen to them rust.
And that includes the golden era of their invincibility.
Nobody under 50 knows what they're talking about with rust jokes. Every damned car in the world rusted out from under you, if you parked outside and didn't wash the underbody every time it went out in winter. Every one. Benz, Porsche, Rolls. You cannot establish the engineering (or moral!) superiority of Chosen Marque by boasting of its rust resistance, because nobody had any. You just chose where.
My 1963 Studebaker does not have a speck of body rust, and never has had.
I do have to block-sand the cobwebbing every decade or so, though.

cthulhu, I wasn't sure anyone had even seen my final meltdown on last night's ONT since it was really, really dead by then. But it felt like Bitter clinger and Mero were going out of their way to spit in my face personally. Having talked with Mero in the past, I understand his bitterness towards medicine in general, and after a suitable cool-down period I'm no longer ready to give him the full Cheney. It sounds like Bitter clinger has also had some issues in the past, but I'm ignorant of them.
You won't catch me saying physicians are sainted, but it feels like as a group we get dragged through the mud more than warranted. And really, I've never identified CPAs as a group to be problems, I always just figured that the bad apples were the exception. I do have a disproportionate dislike of lawyers in general on both a professional and personal level, but aside from a good lawyer joke, I'm not going to start painting good morons like AtC with a broad brush.

Classic failure mode - stuck key auto-repeating. If you want to salvage it rather than get another, you can take the whole thing apart (pry keys off, etc) and wash it with some dish soap. Rinse completely, set the parts out in the sun to dry completely.
Unless it got something like a built in speaker with paper cone, most electronics can be washed/pleaned conventionally. I used to put filthy motherboards in the dishwasher.

Not entirely true -- there's a natural limit to the size of most financial fraud. Now, when you get to pension plans....the whole idea is that you're going to have 100,000 "Joe Worker" guys putting $100 a month into a plan for 30 years, then getting some nice benefit when they retire. If you ask 'em how much it should cost for an auditor to verify everything is ok, they'll probably say something like "$100K/year" -- 1% of what they kicked in.
But after 10 years, that pension plan has $100M in it, and crooks can get awfully creative when there's that kind of loot just lying there....

Luckily they're old enough to probably (I hope) not have to face the death panels after our dear leader's "affordable" "healthcare" "plan" is fully implemented.
TY Kalneva,
my thoughts also on our own personal medical issues at middle age. We've had a few, too many actually lately for being in your 50s. but I'm glad to get hip replacement, back surgery, gall bladder etc. done before Obamacare.
I truly believe if my mother needed surgery like she had this week, in a few years she would simply be denied. She has heart damage from an attack 10 years ago, kidney failure as a result and more. Obamacare would deem her too expensive to treat. She would be consigned to die.
TY for your prayers.

The problem is that the profession of medicine -- like the profession of accountancy and the profession of law -- is not the same as being a good doctor, or accountant or lawyer. In all of these, actually being the professional is applying training, aptitude, talent, and skill to a problem at hand and being proud of your work.....while the profession also includes licensing boards, governments, payers, grifters, and flakes that keep milking a medieval guild system built on generating privilege for the profession and enhancing cash flow.
I don't think that Mero or Bitterclinger were targeting you, personally, in any way. But the profession you're in just took a hard lurch toward cronyism and there's a lot of evidence that it was already pretty badly tainted.
And, speaking of taint, why hasn't anyone GOMER'd some clown and claimed EMTALA was unconstitutional under the 13th Amendment: "Neither slavery ***nor involuntary servitude***, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."?

cthulhu, in all seriousness, the Roberts court would call the EMTALA fines a tax and use some judicial Jedi mind tricks to claim it comports with the Commerce clause, or some other such bullsh*t. The 13th Amendment argument is a very good one for debunking the idea of health care as a right (I swear one of the cobs had a great piece on this last year, or maybe it was a sidebar link), but I doubt any bench in the country has enough cumulative cojones to issue a verdict that would overturn EMTALA.
Mero, I'm a sympathetic ear but not the best resource for you--because frankly, as an ER doc, my job is to triage you into "this will kill you now/soon" or "not so much", fix things that can be easily treated, and refer you back to your primary or to a specialist for my best guess as to what your ailment is based on what I can gather from a brief interaction and a limited panel of tests. The Lyme thing I know about more from a couple unfortunate individuals who had it undiagnosed for some time rather than extensive professional exposure--and so I would have referred you on to a cardiac specialist for your CHF, etiology uknown. Clearly the cardiac specialists have not beena able to come up with a satisfactory plan to date. My knowledge base is very broad but limited in depth when it comes to treating underlying diseases, as my goal is to stabilize you and that by nature is more symptom-driven. Get the fluid off your lungs that's drowning you is right up my alley. Fixing the underlying cardiomyopathy that's causing the edema? Sure, I know about digoxin, beta blockers, etc., but I'm not going to be so good at titrating them to the right dose to maximize function while minimizing side effects, and I definitely won't be doing any open-heart surgery.
Anyway, I'm happy to spitball ideas with you, but frankly if there were a diagnosis or treatment for you that is something I can pick up, surely one of those 9 or so cardiologists should have found it long before me. Hopefully the UCD guys will be more thorough and figure this out for you.

I don't think they had a choice. NDS development has slowed to a trickle and retailers don't want to give much shelf space to the hardware and accessories any longer. The existing software they'll reduce more slowly, treating it as the low end of 3DS software. So they needed something at a more entry level price to keep the retail channel happy.

Honestly haven't seen much shelf space dedicated to the DS in quite awhile around here, it had been replaced with the 3DS stuff about a year ago

No wonder Andrew wanted the Horde to comment there. I'm just sayin'...
Fun stuff at Daily Mail -- It seems that women are selling already positive pregnancy test kits for $25 a pop on Craigslist. Woah, Nellie! Suggested uses include getting that recalcitrant boyfriend to pop the question.

In Palm Beach county it is. My tax bill each year has an allocation for the PB "medical district", which basically helps pay for all those ER freebies handed out in the county.
Tightening up a bit on what constitutes an "emergency" would help too. The local ER's are packed with non life threatening issues

When you hear hove beats approaching assume horses not Zebras (in America). It is the 90/10 thing. Thinking this way will solve 90% of peoples problems but it will miss some others. Those that have seen a case in the 10% will appear to be gods but it as much luck as training.

No-go. Not available. In its infinite wisdom, the state of NY had decided all tetanus vaccine would ONLY be allocated to area hospitals, so I was forced into an ER trip.
So a fucking $30 tetanus shot in FL cost me $390 at the emergency room in NY, and I was "treated" for less than 5 minutes and it was only a med tech, not a MD.
We gotta get government out of shit like vaccine allocation. There's no reason tetanus shots can't be given at a low-cost walk-in

Depends which chains you look at. Best Buy tends to be one of the last big chains to drop a platform if it can still be regarded as alive. But in general, the market was ripe for the 3DS platform to hit a lower price point and they couldn't do it with the complete feature set. Since so many people were iffy on the 3D and that was a significant cost factor whose absence wouldn't affect any software, it got the boot.
I suspect the single screen may be another cost savings. A lot of panels that wouldn't pass testing because of bid pixels in the right location are still suitable for use in the 2DS. If this gave Sharp a way to avoid tossing a lot of panels, then they probably gave Nintendo a good break on the price.
Posted by: epobirs at August 30, 2013 10:21 PM (kcfmt)
The point is who you happen to be cared by. You are a fucking Horse if the one looking at you is a Horse Doctor. If the Doc has never seen it they have never seen it and magic doesn't happen in the ER any more than it does at the local auto repair shop. You can be happy someone was there that had experience with your 10% problem but 90% of them will not diagnose in the ER your problem. If you are all knowing in your job more power to you.

Think we've below the critical mass to really give it life. There's a split between PC and console gamers, and then even for the people using the same platforms, we don't necessarily play the same games.
Flip a coin for interest on a specific game, and if we stick to general topics - what's there to talk about? I like this, you like that, but I really really hate this?

As a fellow moron, I'd hate to tweak you so hard that you felt personally wronged -- and my "Individually, I love you all with affection unspeakable; but, collectively, I look upon you with a disgust that amounts to absolute detestation. Oh! pity me, my beloved friends, for such is my sense of duty that, once out of my indentures, I shall feel myself bound to devote myself heart and soul to your extermination!" [Pirates of Penzance] rant on the medical profession was pushing a bit.
That said, I really think that every ER doc in the nation should go on vacay until EMTALA is removed. It just fucking drips evil, all over the place.

An odd bit of my brain, when presented with some kinds of scenarios, becomes fixated on the worst case. I can't abide sitting in a theater balcony because that warped part of my brain cannot stop obsessing with what it would be like to jump. As a result, I long ago decided it would be best to not take up operating some types of machinery.
Therein lies a setup for a SF/horror story. Regenerative medicine becomes highly refined and relatively cheap. Extreme fetishists take to inflicting horrific injuries on themselves, just to partake of the experience. Somewhat like the rationale of the Cenobites in Hellraiser, whose purpose is to deliver extremes of sensation with no distinction between pleasure and pain.
