Hmmm, not surprising. The President does not care if Congress gives him approval to strike Syria, he's gonna do it anyway.
A senior State Department official tells Fox News the president’s decision to take military action in Syria still stands, and will indeed be carried out, regardless of whether Congress votes next week to approve the use of such force. The official said that every major player on the National Security Council – including the commander-in-chief – was in accord last night on the need for military action, and that the president’s decision to seek a congressional debate and vote was a surprise to most if not all of them. However, the aide insisted the request for Congress to vote did not supplant the president’s earlier decision to use force in Syria, only delayed its implementation.

If Only
Administrative error sends Bradley Manning to death row, Nidal Hasan to gender reassignment surgery. Oh man, I needed a laugh.
After sentencing concluded last Wednesday in Fort Hood, Texas, it was reported Hasan would undergo gender reassignment surgery and change his name from Nidal to Nahid Hasan. Nahid is an Arabic name meaning “one with full, round breasts.”Not long after it was revealed, the traitor formerly known as Chelsea had been transferred to death row where he awaits execution by lethal injection.
Leavenworth officials announced that both gender reassignment and execution have been approved by fiscal offices. Due to end of fiscal year funding constraints, changing these allocations will be too costly in the final quarter.

Messy Food Eating Etiquette
Man I didn't know there was a right way to eat buffalo hot wings. I just tear into them like a piranha. 10 messy foods you're eating the wrong way.
Yes, you can eat these gracefully, sauce and all, says Sandy Muskopf Hyde, president of the Etiquette School of Ohio and a native of Buffalo, NY, birthplace of the famous wings. To minimize mess, go for drumsticks: Hold the ends with the thumb and index finger (or first two fingers) of both hands, and eat the drumstick clean. The two-boned, flat chicken wing is a different story, she says. Pick the wing up by the ends with the thumb and index finger (or first two fingers) of both hands. Locate the end with the larger bone sticking out. Use your fingers to pull the cartilage off from this end and discard it. Locate the smaller bone, twist it loose with your fingers and pull it from the wing. Do the same with the larger bone. "You may now eat your boneless chicken wing," Muskopf Hyde says.
Non-Alcoholic Beer Challenge
Dumbass wonders if drinking 28 non-alcoholic beers in an hour will make him drunk? Actually, he figured 30 would make him legally drunk at .08. He could only handle 28 in an hour. No small feat and he paid for it as he promptly ralphed it up. In the end, he ended up blowing a .02.

Defining what your position is, detailing why it is so strategically & legally, then opening up the formal debate to provide one more check & balance via Congress, then fulfilling your leadership role as President to make the ultimate decision about any military response. Brilliant.

The ASF variant Tomcats would have had an AESA radar to replace the -71 with far more modes. Talking over 17,000lbs of fuel carried internally. More powerful F-110-GE-229 engines for more thrust. Able to do AoAs over 70 degrees.
The mock-up of the Tomcat 21/ASF cockpit was Star Wars. Pure glass cockpit front and back. The RIO had a primary MFD along with another 18x6 that could be configured into three smaller 6x6 screens.

It has totally chilled her dog over storms now. They go for about $40, depending on the size of the animal.

I think the X factor here is that he actually hears and feels criticism if it comes from the left. So if he gets a "Yes," he can share the blame, and if he gets a "No," he can try for some macho warmonger cred, or, more likely, go for the blameless climbdown. He might be envying Cameron, and he didn't really mean the red line thingy anyway.

I remember reading an article about F-14s when they were decommissioning the last squadron. We were parking 46s around the same time. Some Tomcat guy was quoted as saying, "These jets have an unbelievable amount of hours on them, some up to 3,000 hours." Our Phrogs had 5 times that much.

258 so our fighter jets suck now too, to go along with everything else?
I don't think our fighters suck, but many of us do have great memories of the older models.
That low pass video reminds me of a time when we got one of the fly-bys at sea. He came in real low and right at the speed of sound - the mist he kicked up put a damper on the the old cookout.

When you get to the bottom of the page click on the last comment number you read. That will refresh the page and bring you to that comment. On subsequent clicks of the last comment you read you will have to jump back up to hit the refresh button but it will drop you down to that last comment your read as long as you made sure to click it.
That cuts down on some of your scrolling.

This isn't a serious shit all the time blog, it's a news issues humor blog and former Smart Military Blog. It's what makes it very popular
Ace can't really do that much to change the world to our liking from this blog, and our comments accomplish even less. We're here to have some fun with it because being super serious and talking among ourselves is just too damn depressing. Most of us here have kept our sanity intact in the last 5 years from the biting satire we engage in
Believe it or not, there were actually SUPER SERIOUS people complaining about the football threads because you know, Obama might win if we talk about football on a thread on a weekend
I leave you with this classic from Empire of Jeff

With your every keystroke, it is as if a mighty hammer is tolling the Bell of Liberty itself, urging a torpid citizenry to action! Lead us!
Ignoble are the aims of those who would doubt your patriotic fervor, simply because you type in the manner of a drunkard with massive head trauma!
Cast aside these fairweather patriots, for weak though the flesh may be, NOBLE and TRUE is the spirit within!

We have no positive interest in Syria. To be truthful, any act against the Assad regime is inherently supportive of Al Qaeda, which by their own voice and the 2001 AUMF is an enemy of the USA. Such action is treasonous.

F-14: magnificent and fast Iron Works design. An enormous maintenance hog. Far and away the costliest frame in the fleet with regard to total cost of ownership. Carried the Phoenix missile, which is one of those ambitious concepts that never worked particularly well in practice, if at all, and thank God a carrier was never in a position where there was an AIM-54 as the deciding factor in its combat survival.
A dangerous dog at times when boarding, especially with the completely inferior original engine fit, which was notorious for putting a number of newly trained or rusty aviators in very bad places near the ship. At times exceeding those mediocre aviators' responses, to lethal effect. (cough) Kara Hultgreen (cough)
Could have been a considerably improved aircraft in the various advanced re-engined configurations. A shame that never happened. I held a wake when Cheney killed the idea. However, it would never have had the delicate signature management necessary to keep it alive against today's advanced threats. Impossible to retrofit to that level either.
F/A-18: so much of an improvement in maintenance cost over the F-14 that it's not even funny. Even more reliable than the incredibly reliable A-4, which is a much less technically complex plane. The safest fighter jet ever to have been in the fleet from a boarding standpoint. Every aviator I've talked to praises its docility and controllability on approach. No surprises. And, like the F-14, it has TWO GODDAMN ENGINES, which, F-35 boosters, take notes, this will be on the final exam. The final exam that's scheduled for night over cold hostile water in bad weather.
However, short legs. Did I mention short legs? Short legs. Laughably short compared to some of the jets it was described as replacing. There is a reason Bugs do so much buddy tanking. Tiny weapons loadout to range. I used to work with an A-6 guy. He would write up a typical mission profile for his community, involving moving X number of tons of ordnance to a target at Y nautical miles out, and shove that down the bar to the Hornet guys to watch the blood drain from their faces. Heavy deep strike ceased to exist when the A-6 went away. Hornets can not fill that hole.
The Bug in its various forms is also slow and draggy. There is the canted wing stores problem. The -18 is an improvement when it comes to signature management over the F-14, but jeez, what would not have been? Even this latest version with "better stealth" is still going to get picked up and picked off awfully fast by modern threat radars. And none of the Bug variants, to include the latest, have kinematics sufficient to get in and out of triple-digit SAM envelopes quickly enough.
F-35 bitching to follow.

I hate to see the Navy putting all of its eggs into the Hornet/Super Hornet basket though, and they really really REALLY need a longer range carrier ASW platform. Policy wonks have been wrong before (fighters don't need guns in the age of long range missiles...can you say gunpod?) and unfortunately when those fucks are wrong Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines pay for it with their blood.

I've long heard about the longbow thread. Also the memorable Memorial day thread. Can anyone give me dates so I can find them in the archives?
Lordy I've read some funny threads in the past 2 years I've been reading regularly. If these are memorable I've got to read them sometime when the current political/life bs is getting too much. TIA for any help.

I am resigned to three facts:
1. It's going to burn.
2. Nothing I can say or do at this point will reverse or negate 1.
3. Life is way too damn short to be pissed off all the time.
Ergo, it makes no difference any more. I'm cranking out the cold drinks and setting the chairs up on the balcony, if it's gonna burn I might as well enjoy the pretty pretty lights.

506 Tomcat 21 was a sexy beast all right, but the kitty was a nightmare to maintain. The Hornet's av bays were a lot quicker to access and the motor swaps were a breeze compared to the Tom. I loved the Tomcat, but it was not a maintenance friendly jet, and it's flight hour/maintenance hour ratio is eventually what led to its demise.
My dad told me the same thing about previous planes, I can totally understand. It is nice to know that they made improvements in maintainability on newer planes. Too bad they went the opposite way on the ships themselves for so long.
Got to go aboard the Iowa once, I was amazed at how the ship was layed out so that it was easy to access main engineering equipment. Complete with hatches above primary equip. for removal and trolleys for transport to maint. shops on the ship.
On the 'modern' ship I was on, you had to completely disassemble a pump in the engineroom, haul the parts out, then put it all back together on the main deck - so you could take it to the tender for repair. The other option was to wait for a shipyard period and cut a big effin' hole in the side of the ship.

On the nuke carriers they have these huge holes with bolted on covers on the main (hangar bay) deck and below, I understand they are for refueling the reactors, but everything else either gets disassembled, repaired in place, or if you are lucky and able to get it to one, goes up the ordnance elevators.

I have an ancient (by technology standards) digital video camera that records on cassette tapes that you can't get players for (and never could AFAIK) and hooks up to the computer with a firewire cable that I could never get working. I could never tell if it was the computer port, the cable or the camera itself that wouldn't transfer data because I only had the one computer (something tells me that was it because the card readers stopped working also). I can hook it up with standard RCA connections to transfer data off it if I want to, but I don't have anything on it.
My new video camera records to a data card but the formatting is apparently unique to video cameras so won't play on anything any-damn way.

On the CGN I was on we had a compartment directly above the reactor with a large hatch just for this purpose, but don't remember a hatch in the overhead leading to the outside - get the torch. This isn't so bad really, a reactor only gets refueled every 15 yrs or so if the ship is at sea alot.
Do we even have CGN's anymore? Dang, I think I just called myself old.

On a PC, VLC will play pretty much everything worth mentioning. I use a free-ware app called Media Coder for transcoding to other formats. It knows about the hardware features of more recent Intel chips to greatly speed up the process if you don't require the absolute highest quality, as the experts still claim a quality edge for multi-pass software based conversion.

Yeah, some kind of format, I'm told that if I change the file extensions to .wmv they should play on the media player but I've never been able to get them to do that. There is software for it, but it takes for-ever to convert. It would be nice if everything would speak the same language...

In the era of the _Iowa_ class, the designers assumed that the ship would get in a fight, and then would probably have to endure being in several more fights after that before finally reaching a safe location for external repair/refit. Hence, built to take damage, and built to repair what they could while operating on their own.
Compare and contrast to modern USN warships, which can't even reload their main missile batteries while at sea any longer. Something important breaks? It has to be fixed by a manufacturers' tech team. Typically while in port.

The backstory, however, adds depth to things. The Russians have long recruited badasses from the 'stans (Kazakhstan is just a variant spelling of "Cossack-stan") for "force projection" in the mideast and Europe. The term Czar (or tsar, whatev) is, itself, a variant spelling of "Caesar" from one of their more successful campaigns (Ivan III, grandfather of Ivan "the Terrible", managed to marry a niece of the Byzantine emperor in 1472, and -- since Constantinople had fallen to the Turks in 1453, the Russian Court decided to be the "Third Rome" and named Ivan IV "the Terrible" as the first Czar in 1547).
So here we have a bunch of folks who are talking about being the heirs of the Roman and Byzantine empires, using cossacks from the 'stans to whomp Ottoman Turks.....and their muscle is so dismissive of the Turks that they send such a contemptuous message.....
But, wait, it gets better! Catherine the Great decides that she's a little tired of the uppity Z guys and liquidated them in 1775. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaporozhian_Host
So you get this total little microcosm of Russian history out of this one painting....

Really it wasn't that bad with the rail mount systems, get it on the rail and lower away. How in the world do you reload an in-deck vertical launcher?
Why, oh why do you make something for war that isn't easily repairable, easy to reload ?

Summer Glau, a bad actress. And if you want bad actresses, you want Meghan Ory

That stuff can be configured, although I've never had much trouble with it myself. And I suppose you have to make some allowances for it being French. Which is also why it can play DVDs and Blu-rays without a license, as French law regarding playback licenses is very different from most of the West. Technically, using it outside of France is illegal but nobody has seen fit to pursue the matter.
I found it worthwhile to build an HTPC because I kept running into stuff that none of my equipment would play. The game consoles don't like to admit MKV exists, and the Blu-ray decks and dedicated boxes that do speak MKV tend to not handle anything outside of their narrow range well. A bunch of stuff I have uses a spec for subtitles that falls into this category, even though VLC has no problem with the same files.
I've gotten the impression that Media Coder could convert the subtitles to a more modern standard but I don't know enough to give it the right parameters. It gets pretty esoteric.

We are.
"At least with the ship I was on, we could theoretically load new missiles at sea.. on a calm day.. with a lot of hand wringing. Really it wasn't that bad with the rail mount systems, get it on the rail and lower away. How in the world do you reload an in-deck vertical launcher?"
The original ships with VLS had the provision to do that. A traveling crane on the front of the deckhouse. It had enough reach to cover all the vertical cells. The capability has since been deleted. In-port reloads only. You have to figure the voyage back to port with empty missile magazines, with a shooting war still going on, would be a bit nerve-wracking.
"Why, oh why do you make something for war that isn't easily repairable, easy to reload?"
I asked an old machinist's mate that question and he said, "It's a sign that it's been a long time since the last really big war where the Navy had to really fight. People forget basic stuff in peacetime."

I've heard rumors that the new uniform is one of those issues. In the 70's the went to a working uniform that would melt to you in a fire, 80's back to cotton - now it sounds like we're back to the melting problem again.
Every few years - same things have to be relearned.

Thing is, you can take a zillion courses about European History at American universities, and they'll tell you that Genghis Khan was a foreign threat that came up and rattled the borders....when Moscow wouldn't be Moscow without 'em.

I don't cast myself as an authority -- rather as someone who marvels at all the threads of history thrown to the ground and ignored by the formation of The Narrative -- even when they're freaking obvious. Like the Czar/Caesar thing....

My cheapo Blu-ray deck, an LG BP-220, handles about 85% of the MKVs I feed it fine but the remainder is enough to make me dissatisfied. The primary failure is not definition of the wrapper format. It's unsupported codecs that should not be unsupported. For instance, a lot of boxes don't know about Ogg for audio, even though it is freely available for anyone to implement on their firmware.
Problem is, a lot of fansub groups favor it for what I'd guess is more political/religious reasons than anything else. But easy as it would be to support, Ogg is missing from a lot of places.
I suppose if I got all of my stuff from official source it wouldn't be an issue but I haven't the disposable income for such indulgences and wouldn't want to give any money to Hollywood if I had it.

I got a little glimpse in the mid 70's, when the LA County Museum of Art had an exhibition of Scythian artifacts that was impressive as hell -- even when I revisited them at their "home" in the Hermitage a couple of years ago.
If you think about it, we know a whole lot about the history of Western Europe, the MidEast, East Asia, and the subcontinent. We know semi-fictionalized things about the history of North and South America, North Africa, and Australia. And we know diddly-bupkis about the history of Central Asia, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia.
But the Russians do. The Hermitage has quite a bit from Central Asia -- mostly in the untenanted corners. But it was rich and rare for me because the spots it illuminated were so totally blank before.

It may be my age but I'm very untrusting of infrastructure stability. Given the financial ability, I'd have a lot of safeguards in place against major inconvenience from temporary loss of utilities and services. ot a full-on prepper but I like the idea of a little insurance making a disaster into something livable. Like having enough generation capacity to not lose the contents of the fridge and to run the microwave. Or a pair of water tanks, one for drinking and cooking and the other gray for keeping the toilet flushing. And things like solar panels to keep your small electronics charged, the level where it's practical and unobtrusive.
Consequently, I like to have my media local. Given a high enough level of disposable income I'd probably have Netflix and/or Hulu subscriptions, mainly for my mother and sister. Given enough freedom from the anxiety of unemployment I'd probably spend more time gaming than watching videos. Given a bit more financial stability I'd keep downloading torrent but perhaps get more cable channels or a Netflix subscription to feel justified, regardless of how Hollywood views it.
No Powerball winner tonight. Goes up to $169 or better on Wednesday. Dream accordingly.

Saw a show where at the end they had a neat freak eat barbeque chicken. He did it without getting a drop of barbeque sauce on his face, clothes or fingers. He was then mocked mercilessly because he didn't know how to enjoy eating. Same thing applies. Some foods are messy. Doesn't mean you have to eat them like you are a mincing faggot.
