Overnight Open Thread (3 May 2013)
— CDR M

Whew. It's Friday. Grab a drink, depants and hop on in to the ONT.

And please, if you are a beer drinker, you should really double up on your rations as the current beer crisis could trigger the next Ice Age.

Bravo Zulu

Now this is the American spirit. Army amputee completes grueling air assault school. Meanwhile, 14 million Americans are claiming disabilities so they can draw some sweet Uncle Sugar cash and stay home instead of work. Some of these people should be ashamed of what they claim as a disability.

Who's On First?

Our enemies love this shiite. Back in September of last year, Obama said that "no leader ties his hands" with "set conditions" and Panetta went even further:

US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta dismissed Netanyahu’s engagement of Obama on the issue of preemption, saying, “The fact is [that] presidents of the United States, prime ministers of Israel or any other country – leaders of these countries don’t have, you know, a bunch of little red lines that determine their decisions.”

So of course, in December, Obama announces his red line for Syria. This was just political posturing by Obama to make him look like a tough Commander-in-Chief.
It would be deeply inconvenient for the president of the United States to have to go to war in Syria when he placidly assures the American public that the tide of war is receding. U.S. intervention grows even more inconvenient since our unwillingness to help the rebels has led them to take help from quarters we disapprove of -- are we to fight alongside the al Nusra front, which we (rightly) characterize as a terrorist organization with al Qaeda links?

It is a problem of the president's own making, of course: He took a strident stand that any chemical weapons use would be a "game changer" precipitating American military involvement. This president likes to look tough on the international scene -- even when he's leading from behind he's taking all the credit. So we have policies designed to showcase Obama as a commanding commander in chief. In order to keep him from having to make good on his threats, the administration has taken to relying on intelligence assessments as his opt-out.

The Syria evasion is of a piece with Obama administration deflections of other intelligence conclusions that would force a change to their policies: Iran and North Korea.

All talk, no bite and more about Obama's own personal political interest than what is in America's best interest. No one likes an undependable ally. Gee, I wonder what happened to all the lefties who raged against politicizing intelligence assessments?

Ooops.

Hmmm. Do you suffer from doing stupid things in the presence of a beautiful woman? Well, a simple antibiotic may protect men from being too trusting of women.

Sequestration

What sequestration? DoD signs contract for $59 a gallon jet fuel. Even though this contract costs only $215,350 with the potential to take on an additional $737K, it is still something that should be put on hold with sequestration ongoing, especially when JP-8 costs $3.73 a gallon.

2 Idiocy, from Guam to Helium Rep. Hank Johnson, the DemocratÂ’s response to anything and everything stupid said by anyone who happens to be a Republican, has done it again. The House of Representatives was debating a bill on mandating that the continued sale of helium from the Federal Helium Reserve, wince the United States has nearly 80% of the world reserves. While there was plenty of concern on the effects of the crippling effects of a lack of helium on the world markets vs. the problem of lack of future supply, Rep. Hank JohnsonÂ’s concerns were geared towards the happiness that balloons bring the hoi polloi, and perhaps also of his own sense of imagination. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=2114

A search of Katherine Russell TsarnaevÂ’s computer turned up data from Inspire, the recruitment magazine published by al-Qaeda online, as well as other material that makes her more interesting than an average witness

Well, she probably didn't know terrorist stuff was on her computer, right? Nor did she know hubby and brother-in-law were making bombs using the kitchen sink and bathtub!

A bathtub and kitchen sink in the Cambridge apartment of deceased Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev tested positive for residue from explosives, corroborating his surviving brother DzhokharÂ’s claims that the duo built bombs at the home, a federal law enforcement source said Friday.

Got disability for some reason. Painted own house, okay he did a half-assed job, but he did paint it. He's done roofing for neighbors. But living off disability and food stamps. His live in girlfriend gets workers' comp. They make regular trips to the casino. They don't pay their property taxes on a home the girlfriend inherited. They run a generator almost 24 hours a day because they owe the electric company $1700. Their car is supposed to be repossessed so they have hidden it with someone. I'm living for the day when these bums' house is taken away for delinquent taxes.

122 A great poem written by Canadian physician Lt. Col. John McCrae on May 3, 1915.     In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.   We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.   Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

186 Heh animals are funny.

Twice a day I give my big ass dog thyroid pills.  Sometimes shoved in a Pupperoni, sometimes I can fool him into taking it naked.

But twice a day, as I do that, the Siamese cat comes and yells for a treat at the same time.

The two things aren't linked.  Cats don't get treats when dog gets medicine.  How does cat know to beg for crap then?

No, not at all. Bees occur naturally.  In NC you would have to prove a bee from that hive stung you.  Try that.

Her sign is a problem, since it suggests that she has some obligation to inform anyone that there are bees there. Bees are every fucking where.

Peanut farmers don't put signs up saying, peanut dust ahead. Lot's of people say they are allergic to peanuts, which I think is BS.

Being polite sometimes is taken as an acceptance of liability, when it should not be.

I've told this story before, but.......

My dad was a consultant at a Catholic hospital in NYC.

An Albanian woman gave birth to a baby who had a serious structural defect of the spine that, if left untreated, would result in a massive infection and certain death. The upside was that it was treatable with aggressive antibiotic therapy (my dad's specialty) and surgery.

The stone-age father said...."kill it."

The nurses when apoplectic, and wanted to strangle the father. The nurse supervisor ( a catholic nun) called my dad, who said to call the hospital lawyers, who promptly went to court to get permission to treat the baby.

The judge heard the facts, told the father to get fucked, and the kid was treated successfully.

It's almost as if respect for life actually meant something!

368 Giant fucking holes in the ground can occur naturally too. If you have something that's inherently dangerous on your property, there can be problems with liability.

Ag products by definition do not fit that category.  Honey bees are NOT inherently dangerous. People get stung by bees millions of times a year.  Bees are not classified as a dangerous product any more than cows or pigs.  In fact honey bees are very docile. Now don't fuck with paper wasps or African bees.

Hey, NC State grad here, we know our farm shit, so to speak.

The guy has no conscience about what he did, and people who have no conscience are the most dangerous. I hate him. I hate his lawyers. I hate all of the "pro choice " scumbags who aren't speaking up about his crimes. I hate the newspeople who have made a point of playing this down. I'm afraid he will either be acquitted or there will be a hung jury. I believe that there are people on that jury who will not vote guilty. No matter what the evidence. And there are people on that jury who won't vote for acquittal because of the testimony of the people who worked there. It wouldn't surprise me if the voting is along racial lines.

423 I usually only preheat my pizza stone for about 30-45 minutes. I leave it in there all the time since it keeps the oven temp more stable and helps to retain the heat when checking the food often. You aren't suppose to wash a stone with soap and water. I usually just scrape it with a bench scraper. If the stains really bother you I heard that you can sand it with a rotary(?) sander. I actually got it years ago to bake bread and only recently started to make pizza.

458 I tried putting a bunch of firebricks in a layer in the oven. They are for lining a fireplace or woodstove, about 9 x 6 by one inch thick. Took a lot longer to preheat of course and actually lowered the temp. Only good for full time commercial use I guess. Probably interfered with the air circulation too.

465 Liberalism is a lot like Islam, which is why I think the former goes the extra mile to excuse the latter.

In both cases, the idea of "an opinion" does not exists.  There is THE TRUTH and there's everything else.  Liberals believe that they are in possession of THE TRUTH, rather than tired old opinions which kill people, so they see no need to examine their beliefs.  Why should they?  Why would someone need to prove that water is wet, blood is red, and the Jews are responsible for everything bad?

So yes, Liberalism and Islam are the two greatest brain diseases of our age.  At least the Commies know they want power, and have no delusions that what they do, they do for the "greater good."

A plague upon them all.

488 CDR M - did you pull the trigger (heh) on that P226? One thing I forgot to mention - Sig has a super-slick caliber exchange deal. You can buy a new top assembly (slide, barrel, spring) and magazine for about $350. Change your P226 from an X to an X. I bought mine in .40 S&W but just got the 9mm exchange kit. You can do 9mm, .357 SIG, .40 S&W or even .22LR. Changing the caliber takes all of 30 seconds. I've got the 9mm and .22LR assemblies for my P229, which makes it a great gun to introduce people into shooting (which I have been doing a lot lately). Of course, one of those new shooter idiots dropped all my guns in the ocean earlier this year, so.... maybe I am just speculating.

Thing that gets me is the "county-option" farce. Mind you, these aren't counties like they have out west -- LA County is 4752 square miles with just shy of 10M people (compare with Rhode Island which is 1214 square miles and a pop of just over a million). You might have to exert yourself to drive out of LA county for some liquor.....but Moore County, TN (home of the Jack Daniel's distillery, and famously dry) is only 130 square miles. I'd have a hard time mailing a postcard, buying a head of lettuce, grabbing some 2x4s and deck screws from Home Depot, and filling my tank with gas without "falling out of" a county that small.

I have a unique mixer, I made it from a K-tel pasta maker with mods and a dough hook from a cheap mixer.
Uses a 5 lb bag of flour for a batch. The K-tel unit was built like a tank except for the plastic bin and I have been using it foryears , probably 5 or 6 in the original config and 5 in the mod. it is as powerful as a Kitchenaid and draws about 100 watts, about 1/4 the Kitchenaid, due to the gear reduction.

Can't stop it even gripping with your fist, carefully. I think it will probably out last me. Paid about 5$ for it, never had been used. I picked up another a few years ago for a backup but will probably never need it, just use for homemade pasta once in a while.

Couldn't afford one so made my own, hardly believe it's still working. I open it up and oil the motor bearings sometimes, the gears are 1/2 " thick nylon and greased, and the whole thing is on a plywood stand/ base with a grip for the bowl. Worked out the details one day home sick and built it next day or so. Not fancy  but I could paint it. Somewhat noisy is the only drawback and it makes static on the tv and radio.

And on reflection, it's kind of pathetic that the Star Wars thing is more of a legit celebration than the Cinco de Mayo thing. Both are commercial in nature but one is in celebration of a commercial success attaining cultural influence, while the other was simply made up to sell Mexican beer brands the way St. Patrick's Day sold the competition.

Of course, good pie can also be purchased in other areas of NM.

We are having our Cherry Festival (High Rolls Mountain Park Lions Club, where the local church sells the pies) June 5-16 in High Rolls, up Highway 82 between Alamogordo and Tularosa, 9 - 5 Saturday and 9-4 Sunday, so come on up!)

But you can buy pies any day driving up that highway at various vendors.

And they are pretty good!

Maybe buy you a beer at the local pub.

764 Toe or Tow the line... I'll be upfront and admit my preferences and horror when I thought that Ace used it incorrectly, on Twitter. (Toe) It is common practice in many long-established schools for roll-call to be taken twice a day, at which the pupils line up with their toes exactly along a particular line on the floor, while their names are called out for them to respond to indicate their presence. Shit! We were all expected to line up by class & by size (WTF?!) and be quiet, for 20min., when I was 7, before we went into an "Open-Space" school in the late 70's. Winnebago Elementary, Bloomingdale, IL. 1st graders to 5th graders, didn't matter how little you were, how long you had been quaking in the -20F weather, we had to WAIT for the 5th graders who DECIDED to walk, saunter in, and grab-ass about getting in line. I never hated those 5th Graders nearly as much as I HATED the "administrators" with their fuckin' whistles. Sometimes, school wouldn't get open even 45min after all the buses were supposed to be dropped off. You would just stand there, on the blacktop, in line, and shiver, knowing that "your" teacher was as just afraid of the lunatic with the whistle as your 8yr. old self. Couldn't see my brother down the line (he was 3 ranks down) but at one point, I noticed a little 1st grader in a Dolphin's jacket, looking paler than most of us and she, just, fell, down... I picked her up and ran...to the Door That Goes to the Learning Spaces, like a child! Got some static, AT THE DOOR! about disrespecting priorities, until the child that I had cradled in my armsstarted seizing. I was a 2nd grader, not likely she could have been that much smaller than me... Who refuses a desperate 8 yr old with a 1st Grader in her arms? No possible way, I was any older than 8yrs. old when that happened. (Toe) Barefooted seamen had to stand at attention for inspection and had to line up on deck along the seams of the wooden planks, hence to "toe the line" (Toe) Over the years the term has been attributed to sports, including toeing the starting line in track events and toeing a center line in boxing, where boxers were instructed to line up on either side of to start a match. So, WTF is towing a line? Do you imagine yourself a put upon by a tugboat?

Well put. If I were a douchebag politician (but I repeat myself), I'd be more worried about single-shot short-barrel shotgun-firing quadcopters with video than any general-purpose firearm. Park one on a rooftop along a parade route, wait several hours, get in some alley within line-of-sight....and it pops-up, swoops-in, you fire everything it's got, self-destruct the control circuits, and walk away with the controller under your coat. Just like "gun-free zones" are guaranteed shooting galleries, no rational person (note "sanity" is not a parameter) will go up against a popular figure head-on. They have security; it's not likely to work. But doing RC control from the left while the weapon swings in from the right....that can make things interesting.

Facial recognition code is fairly good these days. GPS is very small and lightweight. I wouldn't have a remote  control signal that took longer than a single complex key ending with a GO command. Long enough not to be accidental, short enough to be indistinguishable from noise. After that, it is entirely autonomous and no signal can alter its behavior. Or don't have a signal at all but rather a physical button. If they battery is good enough for half an hour you can launch from a good distance away and be very far away before anything results.

Make a couple dozen and have them do harmless goofy stuff in the vicinity so that nobody thinks it untoward when one approaches the target. That one is different.

You could probably reprogram an old iPhone to all of the sensing and processing. Acquiring old smartphones that have changed hands a dozen times since their first sale shouldn't be hard.

Fortunately, the evil genius is a lot rarer in real life than in comics or movies. The potential is pretty scary. A group of folks I used to have dinner with weekly in the 80s and 90s sometimes got into the discussion of what a real super-villain who wanted to be showy might do. After 9/11 a lot of the participants refused to admit they ever had such thoughts.

Copters suck power like crazy.  I know some guys with big'ish electric helis and they don't get even 10min on a LiPo that weighs a few pounds.

To carry any kind of payload, you're into $5,000 gassers and they ain't too quiet.  One guy I know does professional camera work with one and its big and heavy, but it'll carry a 15lb payload.

With all the CF and aluminum, the helis aren't particularly radar transparent.  Something with wings, out of foam/balsa, would be a minimal radar profile.  A small 2.5cc model diesel engine with a quart of fuel would run for long time.

I've got an old (but new) small high performance Soviet built 1.5cc diesel that will run about 5min on 2oz.

What do they do, PA? I've overhauled my share of Bridgeport mills, scraped ways,   replaced  spindle bearings   and stuff like that. If they're made relatively well,   there shouldn't be much to do except maybe tighten up the ways.

You'd really need to watch the depth of cuts, and have cutters that won't overwhelm the   little motors.

801 What do they do, PA?

Tighten up all the lash/slop in the traverse and shit like that.  Fit ball screws, maybe some better bearings, reinforce any weak spots that got too much flex.

Maybe a better chuck, but I've read that the Chinese chucks and spindles actually run pretty true most of the time.

With the full monty of tuneups, I've read that they're good for precision work in the tenth range, which is good enough for most stuff.

If you can afford them, get Mitutoyo measuring instruments. I have several, and  they've   served me well over the  years. IIRC,  Harbor Freight does carry them, as does Carr-Lane.

That set-up in the links with the drill press is interesting. I'd have bolted the bottom vise to the plate, tho'. You'd really need to watch  how much of a cut you took, cause despite being made of metal, all those vises together will flex  under a load. The small spindle motor should keep you in check, since it's not very robust.

Or, at least pawned for something unsavoury. You weren't all that in love with the precision pick ups? Prefer the Jazz ones myself, but the Precision has the best neck in any bass, hands down.

824 What is a Taylor? Oh my. I'm gonna go with you're asking which model. It's a DN8. More guitar than I deserve to have but it's my "guitar of a lifetime". Upon my death it will not be sold! I will have a friend see that it goes to a "worthy player" who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford a guitar like it. Taylor guitars dot com

I   ordered that bass with a narrow maple neck from the factory,  since I have small hands.   I was also into prog rock at the time and dabbling in   jazz. This was about the time of Jaco Pastorius' first release.  I could get reasonably close to his sound   and Chris Squire's too, with a pick,  on that one bass.

I made  up for the lost years when I got back into playing again. I now have 5 basses including a nice cheap little Yamaha   double-scale fretless and an Ashbory,(little bitty short scale plastic   fretless with the rubber strings)   which can sound  like an upright. Need  a new, smaller, lighter amp tho'.   The Fender combo amp I've been toting around for 20 years gets heavier every year.

830 Thanks otho. It is sweet. Had the fine folks at Mass St Music in Lawrence, where I bought it, install a Baggs active element system VTC pickup in it. Great system.

Acoustic players make me jealous. Can't play them without sounding shittier than usual. Electrics cover up a lot of sins. Distortion is my only friend.

Up way too early. The eyelids flew open at 3:30 am for some unexplained reason, after conking out at midnight.

I foresee a nap in the near future.

834 I hear ya on the heavy amps thing BB. Used to haul around my Super Twin Reverb around along with my double kick set. About 90 lbs of amp I think. If I tried to do that today I'd have to hire a chiropractor to travel with me.

How do you get a drummer  off your front porch?

Pay for the pizza.

836 I foresee a nap right about now, I've been up all night. Working is a hell of a way to make a living. Off today, right back at it tomorrow, yay me.

845 Well otho, I play, but I don't consider myself a "player". Example- when I'm playing Behind Blue Eyes, events on an easy playing guitar like the dn8, I have a hard time hitting that first note on the Bm cleanly. On my Bullet? Could do it without thinking. But oh my does it sound nice and feel good when I do.

846 Shit yeah. What year?

60'-something... This was like 30 years ago back when I was young, stupid, and needed money for food one week.  Had some huge 300W amp for it too that would shake the house.

The only thing I remember anymore was I liked the sound it made with the nylon coated strings.

Yup. Any Fender that old   has appreciated greatly.

I'm torn on which would be better:  an old bass that has been played or one kept in a closet or under a bed that's in pristine condition.  The vibration   from playing does something to the wood, IIRC, there was a company some years ago that   could   "age" a guitar by vibrating it for a while.

OTOH,  a pristine instrument would be something else, too.

Oh, bullshit, teej. You're a musician, I'm just a player. I've heard your stuff. You do alright. I'm not even sure what a b minor is. I get away with shit for some reason. I put my fingers in places and make the noises.

Awesome. Nothing like a 60's jazz. Unique sound. 300w amp? Sweet. A shame. Ah, the things one does when one is young.
