Bleg: Does anyone have experience mining Bitcoins?
Recently they seem to be reaching a critical mass (also possibly a bubble) so I've become interested in mining me some.
Why? Mostly because it's an interesting concept to have an open source untraceable-but-usable currency - and absolutely totally not because they're useful for buying underground guns, drugs, women, or alpacas.
This video is a pretty good introduction to what they are and this article seems to lay out all the steps you need to mine them.
So does anyone in the horde have experience with mining and using bitcoins? Are there any Moron groups? Any gotchas to using them?
FYI the current exchange rate is 1 bitcoin = $69 USD or 1/1650th of a healthy white child.
And Insty does his best to save you from making a journey of horror.
Stay away! In fact, I need to point this out: The South is a cultural desert, across which ride Klansmen on horseback and NASCAR fans in F350 Dually pickups. The cultural center is Wal-Mart, and the occasional tailgater before a lynching. Gunshows are disdained as the domain of pointy-headed intellectuals, because they also sell books. No, really, that's all true - stay away! For the love of God, stay away!
UPDATE: Reader Phil Manhard emails: "I wish to add that we have fire ants, sinkholes, red tide, shark attacks, huge and regular brush fires, sandspurs, sunburn, hurricanes (though, unexpectedly!, none in the last couple of years). Yes, for the love of God, stay far away!"
Prager University: Are We Basically Good?
Afghanistan of the 50s and 60s
Had factories, stores, and universities and looked like it was going to break out of the cycle. But now it's just another hell hole.
Hmm...So why isn't former astronaut Mark Kelly in jail for gun crimes?
In CA if anyone in your household loses their right to possess firearms, everyone does.
Just last week, the California Senate approved a $24 million funding bill to expedite the process of collecting guns from owners in the state who legally acquired them but have since become disqualified due to felony convictions or mental illness.Such was recently the case for one woman, who had been in the hospital voluntarily for mental illness last year that she says was due to medication she was taking. Lynette Phillips of Upland, Calif., told TheBlaze in a phone interview Monday she had purchased a gun years ago for her husband, David, as a present. That gun, as well as two others registered to her law-abiding husband (who does not have a history of felonies or mental illness), were seized last Tuesday.
"My husband is upset that they took the right from us that should never have been taken, Phillips told TheBlaze.
But according to the state of California, that doesn't matter.
"The prohibited person can't have access to a firearm" regardless of who the registered owner is, Michelle Gregory, a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office, told to Bloomberg News.
However they can't get a search warrant so they have to use social engineering to get in:
Merely being in a database of registered gun owners and having a "disqualifying event," such as a felony conviction or restraining order, isn't sufficient evidence for a search warrant, Marsh said March 5 during raids in San Bernardino County. So the agents often must talk their way into a residence to look for weapons, he said.
I can attest that there's big money in potato inspection. And without modern automation a bag of potato chips would cost almost $25.

MAD Magazine Behaving Badly in the 70s
Ah the good old days. Today these seem both tamer yet more titillating than modern kid magazines.
Let me make this perfectly clear - every boy growing up in the seventies read MAD (and Cracked and Crazy - the Heavenly Trinity). And let me make it also clear that these magazines weren't necessarily aimed at minors. Looking back at my old mags, it's interesting to note how inappropriate they were for a young impressionable mind like myself. But then.... they didn't give a shit back then. Children weren't insulated quite like they are today.
Anyway, I've covered this ground before, so I won't rehash it. But, paging through a stack of old MADs, I began to notice a pattern: if there was a sex scene or nude scene in a movie they were spoofing - they were damn well going to include it!
Scientific Breakthrough: Bras Aren't Needed
And may God bless the brave French scientists who devote their lives to le study du boobies.
Professor Rouillon, a sports scientist from the University of Franche-Comte in Besancon, eastern France, spent 15 years studying 130 women with different bust sizes.
All were told not to wear a bra for varying lengths of time, between a few months and several years. During this time Professor Rouillon took regular bust measurements using callipers and a slide rule. The women were asked whether they suffered back pain or felt restricted carrying out daily tasks when not wearing a bra.
He said: 'The first results validate the hypothesis that the bra is not needed. Medically, physiologically, anatomically, the breast does not benefit from being deprived of gravity.'
Professor Rouillon said he believed the 'absence of a bra could keep breasts in shape' and prevent back ache.
He explained: 'The decision not to a wear a bra appeals to women in terms of comfort and aesthetics. Contrary to popular belief, the breast does not fall, but tightens and lifts, and the quality of the skin improves.'
It's science! baby.

Considering all the dick threads we've endured lately, especially the dick behavior of our limpy dicked GOPers, it seems we are in dire need of some boobehs to balance things out.

Its not quite as simple as it seems, nor is it necessarily as anonymous as assumed. Although you are only identified by your bitcoin key (or multiple keys) remember that every transaction in the history of bitcoin is freely (and necessarily, by design) available to anyone.

Stay where you are! You're in a resurgent paradise, the Nobel laureate Paul Krugman CAN'T be wrong about that! You've got great weather, great scenery, happy unionized public employees, a high speed train planned that might only take 3 times as long as a plane to take you from LA to SF!
A highly taxed society is a prosperous society, right? After all, the money will be handled by the best and the brightest in your government, and you might even meet a movie star!
Catastrophic earthquakes only happen a few times a century, and with all your high tech nirvanas it'll be no problem to laugh in the face of God when he tries to knock down your expertly engineered buildings and bridges.

2. Love the potato chip video. When I was a little girl, the highlight of my school year was the trip to the Coca-Cola bottling plant, where you got to watch how they made and bottled Cokes and then at the end gave you a FREE coke!
In the early to mid-50's, there was a show on TV called "Industry on Parade" which showed how various things, from autos to chocolate covered cherries were made. I loved that show and loved the automation scenes.
3. In honor of Mad Magazine, I will post a parody which my sister and I learned from said magazine, set to George M. Cohan's "You're a Grand Old Flag:"
You're a grand old bag and a nice plastic bag
And we find them on all of our clothes.
Oh, a kid can play, the live-long day
With them everywhere that he goes!
They are lots more fun than a doll or a gun
You can wave them around like flags!
But should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your head out of plastic bags!

These days, if you're not using chips custom designed for bitcoin mining, you're probably losing money on the power you use to make your CPU or GPU try to find coins. 51 I notice they didn't say anything about magic: the gathering or other card games on the nerd o meter quiz. Do people still play that game?
I guess they assumed if you are playing magic you are also role playing. but is that really true? hmmm.
----------------------------
Yes, people still play it. No, playing it doesn't automatically mean that you're into RPGs.
You should see the huge masses of people who turn up to play at the tournaments my local game store holds quite frequently. The place gets especially packed when a new set of cards has just been released.
There's a reason why the people who make Magic own D&D, and not the other way around.

Well, it's still higher than it's ever been pre-2013.
I predict in 5 years it'll be treated as a real currency and better reflect its value or it'll be gone.
The real problem with Bitcoins is that if somebody hacks in and gets your bits, they're gone. It's happened a lot. The Bitcoin people say you should keep them on a separate computer, not connected to the Internet. That's like keeping your wallet in a freezer that's in a safe deposit box buried 60 feed down in Arctic tundra. Secure, yes, but a little hard to pay for that Diet Coke you have your eye on. The Russian Mafia has gone all-in on hacking Bitcoin banks, and Bitcoin markets.
Also, the premise is "I can buy illicit stuff and those darned Feds can't catch me." That premise is most appealing to...pedophiles buying child porn. A way will be found to bust their asses, and all the "Cool, I can buy weed/coke/hang grenades" people will be caught up in the dragnet.

There are many of these on YouTube. I have to be careful, because I start watching them, and I can't stop.
I like to imagine that if the crash comes, and YouTube somehow survives, those "How It's Made" episodes will be how we rebuild industrial civilization. Even though their "Bacon" episode showed only how to make low-grade bacon. Even the lesser bacon is a basis on which to rebuild.

@225 Is that Anne Hathaway's attempt to prove to society that she can be taken seriously as an actress? Back in the day, a nobody actress started out in movies showing her boobies then worked up to movies of higher caliber where she didn't need to show skin anymore. Nowadays, it's reversed.
---------------------------
Nowadays it seems to be, "Just because I'm getting older doesn't mean that I'm still not sexy. And I'm flashing the camera to prove it."
The kinds of roles that older women tend to get (or more accurately don't get, in many cases) only seem to encourage actresses to engage in such behavior. Sean Connery can show up on-screen with grey hair and still make the ladies swoon. While I respect Dame Judi Dench's acting ability, she's past the point of having that same sort of effect on most men. And when the men stop ogling, the roles start drying up - particularly the coveted leading roles.
Sad, but true.

And to everyone: all the negative stereotypes of Magic players are indeed correct; but the best players were always the well-adjusted, normal seeming people. Who didn't have that certain nerd reek.
My son is an awesome MTG player. He seems normal but walks the line between normal and geek. Doesn't really seem to fit in with any specific social class.

Doubt I'll even bother to look until they have a whole season I can download. I just don't have any patience with broadcast TV anymore. If it were just me I'd cut the cable down to the bare minimum they give you for being a data subscriber. My backlog on video stored on drives here is in probably well over a thousand hours now.
I've had the rug pulled out from under me too many times by some mediums. About the only form of fiction that reliably delivers complete storylines is print, even if it's pixels these days. Heck, comics are almost as bad as TV. Companies rework series at the drop of a hat if they need to make the detail conform to a movie instead of the other way around. Or they'll force out a writer in the middle of a big plot arc. (A lot of the stuff done in the Thor books in recent years is based on stuff Walt Simonson had planned almost twenty years ago with Asgard destroyed and its population living on Midgard.) It always feels like a big screw you to longtime readers.
One thing I've always liked about UK shows and anime is they have an ending in mind from the start, rather than planning to go on forever until they run it into the ground. I like that some shows go dormant for a few years until the writer feels he has something worth doing rather than just vamping to fill air time.

@233 If you don't know any formal-type prayers, just talk to the Big Guy and be real. {{{{{}}}}
Posted by: Peaches at April 11, 2013 11:17 PM (8lmkt)
I usually just say, "please God, please God, please God" over and over again.
---------------------------------
The way I always taught people when I was a missionary (with a couple of suitable slight variations taking in the fact that I'm no longer talking to potential converts to my religion) -
Start with your opening. How you do this is up to you and your religious beliefs, but I always start by addressing the person that I'm talking to - in this case, God (or Heavenly Father, as I often refer to him).
Next, discuss the things that you're grateful for. This can be long-term things (Life is GREAT!), or stuff that just happened (I'm grateful that I didn't get hit by that car on the way home today). It shows a little bit of humility and gratitude on your part, and that you're not just taking things for granted.
Then, move onto the things that you'd like to ask for - such as (among other things) the health of individuals who you know are experiencing problems. For me, earlier in the week I was asking to keep an eye on my sister while she had an operation to remove the cancer she'd just been diagnosed with (operation appears to have been successful, btw). Don't be shy. This section is half of the reason why you're praying (and the other half - the Thanking - you've probably already completed).
Then close. For me, it's a mention that this is done in the name of our intercessor, Jesus Christ, followed by an Amen. You might choose to do so differently.
And two final items -
The first is to give matters a little thought beforehand. Your prayers will be much better if you give it a few minutes thought beforehand about the things you might like to discuss.
The second is that practice makes perfect, even for prayer. The more you pray, the better your prayers will become. Before you know it, people hearing you pray will wonder why you didn't become a priest(ess)/minister/whathaveyou.

14. Hard to say. I own the first two Star Wars movies, but they're the "Greedo shoots first" variety, so I don't watch them. I own the first of the prequels, but that was a reflexive purchase, made before Red Letter Media qualified my dislike of the series. Score = 1/2 nerd.
13. The last action figure I owned was an "Uncle Duke" which came with a Doonsebury collection. That was 20 years or so ago. Someone stole it from my cubicle. Score = 0 nerd.
12. I have never seen an episode of Big Bang Theory. Nor shall I see one. Score = 0 nerd.
11. George Lucas should have stopped making movies decades ago. Score = 1 full nerd. No, wait: 2 nerds, because that change in particular really ticked me off.
10. Played a few times in high school. Enjoyed the idea of playing more than the actual exercise. I own not so much as a single die. But 1 full nerd anyway since I love computer RPGs.
9. -5 nerds since the last program I actually write in full was in TRSDOS in 1977.
8. They are all ridiculous, though the Kirk era has entertainment value much as the Gong Show had. -20 nerds.
7. What was I even wearing in 4th grade? My memory doesn't stretch back that completely. Pending.
6. n/a - Being Rivers Cuomo isn't a choice. Being a nerd is.
5. +30 nerds. Played tuba and baritone in school. Enjoyed marching band. Did a summer with a drum and bugle corp. +10 more for still being proud of it.
4. Used to. I stopped reading them regularly when I became old enough to have to buy them myself. I stopped reading entirely when I made it through the last issue of Watchmen and couldn't believe allegedly intelligent people had hyped it as genius or whatever. - 10 nerds.
3. + 10 nerds. Didn't ever do that. Sure wanted to.
2. No on Erickson; no on Martin - wait: I skimmed the first Game of Thrones book and thought it was crap. Loved Wheel of Time until a few books in and I found myself actively rooting for the bad guys. True story. On the fence with Tolkien - I find The Hobbit almost unreadable; ditto portions of the Lord of the Rings. Card hasn't done anything truly interesting since Speaker For the Dead. Um . . . gimme +5 nerds.
1. I know each and every one personally. Grew up with most of them. Work with the rest. 0 nerds.
Final score: 22.5 nerds. Damn it. I'm a nerd. Not a good one, though, since I probably screwed up the math.

Cute, but missing the point.
Praying in public isn't the only way that others might hear you pray. Small intimate gatherings often involve a short prayer for one reason or another. And someone who has spent a lot of time on their knees praying in private will be much more at ease offering such a prayer (and thereby put everyone else in the group more at ease) than someone offering a prayer for the first time in several months.

Only for personal reasons of course but you can fairly accurately gauge the age of a woman by two things.
(no not them)
Her neck and her upper arms.
They can lift and tuck the neck and tits and face and lips and the neck but it's not easy. The arms are much harder. Even with exercise. (and you have to do a lot of exercise which will show up in other ways.)
so there you go. don't be showing off though as the womyns will get feisty if you guess their age accurately.
I always subtract about 10 years. Just to be sure.

Sometimes what is really cute on a teenager doesn't mature well. There was a girl on a Nickleodeon or Disney show I saw a fair bit when sitting with my sister's kids. It's troubling that I'm having so much trouble recalling her name. Hilary Duff! That's it. She was also in a movie with Angie Harmon where Frankie Muniz is a teenage secret agent.
Anyway, she had her picture in the dictionary under 'jailbait.' Really cute and you'd expect her to be a the same as an adult. And she is an attractive woman. But nothing special. Whatever made her stand out as a teen got lost somewhere along the way.

I have all 8 years of episodes from Red Dwarf.
It's a BBC Sitcom in space. (think young ones go star trek but with bad production values aka Dr. Who worthy)
Funny as hell but really stupid.
Never was one for the role playing games. Text or otherwise.
I like to shoot pixels and make them dance.
I've built an entire episode of Doom (9 missions)
I've built and entire episode of Duke Nukem 3D
My first pc game was a little thing that was ascii and as you moved the cursor (an X I believe) and you approached the locations of "enemies" they appeared as ascii figures and you then performed 1 of 3 actions on them. Your strength and their strength determined the outcome of the "fight" (this is all in ascii by the way. No pics no video and only an occasional beep from the computer; and IBM xt clone)
I. WAS. HOOKED.
Forevermore. I've got boxes and boxes of floppy discs with old games on them. I can't even play most of them because of hardware and programming changes.
so. I am a nerd but what are you?

She got really skinny. There is a certain type of woman who decides that the best way to fight aging is to lose all her body fat and overly tan. The results are never good. Between skin and bones, or slightly sagging tits, guys will choose to slip with the sagging tits.

I LIKED LOTR by peter but as every director to ever be born has done, after a monumental succes and then given a rich budget and no interference he screwed up the story and thus the film.
just the fact that he dicked with the frames per sec tells me he was more concerned with tech and innovation than retelling the fucking story as it was written. Like that other techno director Lucas did for half his franchise.
Also, I understand he created and expanded a role for some female actress? If he did that then the story line was lost before the first scene was filmed.
I'm a big proponent of "DON'T FUCK WITH THE BOOK" when adapting books to film.
Some books can withstand the process and some can't and some actually can improve. I don't think Tolkien's writing can.

Two Brazilian Soldiers
The Dept of Defense briefed the president this morning.
They told President Obama that 2 Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq .
To everyone's surprise, he collapsed onto his desk, head in his hands, visibly shaken, almost in tears.
Finally, he composed himself and asked, 'Just how many is a Brazilian?'
This is not surprising, since he obviously has no understanding of billion or trillion either.

Many years ago, I was going towards the Toys R Us store in Thousand Oaks to see if there were any good video game markdowns, and I noticed a line of about 20 adults without any children in sight. I asked what this was about and was told they had gotten in a shipment of MegaZords. I had no idea what that was but I had a bunch of store credit handy and figured I could return whatever it was if there weren't any takers among my siblings' kids.
It turned out to be a rather large Japanese robot transformer sort of thing connected to a show I'd never heard of, with the bizarre title of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. It looked like a poor shadow of greats like the Shogun Warriors (the three characters were actually from unrelated shows) but I bought the thing and gave my brother a call that evening to find out if his kids wanted it. Stunned amazement. How did I manage this? The boys had been asking about this thing for months. I asserted that I had connections the like of which most parents could only envy.

My comment wasn't aimed at female actresses. It's that there was NO female part in The Hobbit for them to play.
Making up a part for a female to play just to have a female in the movie contrary to the book is to me the most demeaning and vicious of pandering and AA. It screws up the story also.
It would be like filming Little Women and having a part added of a son. It's far beyond screen adaptation. That's a whole new story.

Some of the html tags don't work with the square bracket deal. I've seen others make them thought so it must be possible unless of course it's browser or platform specific whether you can or can't.
I know strike doesn't work or del for strike through.
b works for bold but I don't bother, and i for italics
so do we have a strikethrough tag or an underline tag?

Johnny Rotten still doesn't understand his audience. Maybe his English audience really wanted "Anarchy for the UK," But it was the queen's defense of the punks that got the US punks shouting, "God save the Queen!"

Now I'm waiting for a good deal to come along on a CPU/motherboard combo. If I see a AMD A10 package for much under $200 I'll probably get that. Though if nothing turns up I'll wait and see what happens with Haswell pricing in a few months. It won't be as good on GPU horsepower, though the gap will be smaller than previously, but there are BGA models specifically aimed at mini-ITX use supposedly among the launch offerings. It'll be a fair bit more money but have a good deal better horsepower with lower power draw. And the option to add a discrete GPU will remain while still having features like QuickSync available.

Even if you go to a regular doc, you might get tagged if you exhibit signs that they could take as indicating you might hurt yourself or others.
ANY doctor can involuntarily commit a minimum of 3 days. Some States allow more before judicial overview.
don't worry be happy and don't tell your doctor your deep feeling of anger and fear. Bottle it up until you explode. That'll fix 'em.

I had no problem with Arwen. Peter expanded her role a bit but it actually helped make Strider seem a more sympathetic person and understand the pressures he withstood for a long time.
Eowyn I wasn't too happy with because I thought (incorrectly) that Perregrine killed the King of the Ring Wraiths. (" I can be killed by no man") After I saw the movie and made a comment about it, I reread the book and found (to my embarrassment given the number of times I've read the trilogy) that Eowyn DID kill the Ring Wraith.
However, Galadriel is never even mentioned in The Hobbit nor should she have been set over Gandalf.
I'm a bit stricter about books I've read and loved. Others; meh.
I've even read books after the film but not often.

I think that depends on the platform or browser you're using to comment with.
somehow the word wrap character gets filtered and there's no space then.
You can correct this by not allowing word wrap.
Hard return every line don't be lazy and let word wrap do it's thing. That should give you a new line and a space.

Got in too late on the Gosnell thread but I had this thought about it today. Back before the Roe V Wade decision, women had limited access to oral contraceptives. In many cases, you had to be married to get them. You might have made a case that access to abortion was needed. But why do we need it now? The Dems have pushed for free contraception. There's no problem getting oral contraceptives and there's easy access to the morning after pill. Why does anyone need easy access to abortion?
And the other part of the Gosnell story, I've read he had a jar of babies feet. If that's true, this is not just a story about an abortion doctor. There's no way to spin that for anything other than what it seems.

The rest of the time will be spent engaged in perceptual input from various "Community Approved" sources that will entertain and educate.
During various points of the day, nutrients will be relayed to the box and automatically injected into the "Tissue Mass" according to it's monitored requirements.
If at any time the "Tissue Mass" becomes sick or unable to perform any useful function for the "Community", it will be unconnected and removed from it's box to be disposed of.
No one will experience crime, death or injury except vicariously through the sensory inputs. No "Tissue Mass" will be capable of crime or "Anti-Community" thoughts or deeds.

Wellll, there was a very brief scene where they're shown recuperating and he holds her hand. And in the book that's about all that was mentioned also. More words but same mental picture.
I think she was pining for a MAN not necessarily a warrior. And one who would be her equal, both in status and ferocity. (although in the movie Faramir's not very feroucious.)
And sometimes, it does work out that way. You have your heart set on an ideal and you think you've found it but it's taken. Then you discover that what IS available is just what you really need.

Early adopters will flourish, periodically. Bitcoins are no different. The phenomenon is that after several years of languishing in the backwaters of finance, a totally unexpected bank run in Cypress and the coincidental availability of bitcoins has brought them into public focus. Spend your money on water, food, ammo, whatever. After the "fall", perhaps, a new currency will arise that we can trust. Not today though, not today.

Like create some stupid "free" game and have it run an idle-time thread doing the calc. Game performance wouldn't be hurt.
Or creating a Linux distro where the system idle loop is replaced by a bitcoin mining calc. Again, performance wouldn't be hurt.
Or a trojan/virus that runs at idle time priority and sends you results periodically.
If you could find one of the myriad zombie botnets out there spamming, you could try to hijack the botnet machines and turn'em into a bitcoin mining network.

I believe the current run up in prices is related to people in the EU and Russia moving their money around to avoid the government currency controls. I have also heard people in countries like Venezuela are using bitcoins as a hedge against inflation and as access to hard currencies.

As to bitcoin mining, you've already missed the boat. Back in the good old days, you could mine even with a CPU, but there was a huge leap in difficulty with the advent of GPU mining (which made CPU mining impractical). From there it went to dedicated rigs using FPGAs and now the latest state-of-the-art is ASICs.
Because of that, and the way the difficulty curve works, you can't mine at a rate that would even repay more than the cost of the electricity, even at the $200+ valuation, without having dedicated hardware, which is a ridiculous gamble given the last week.
You don't want to try to mine bitcoins now, son... what you want to try to mine is Litecoins. Litecoins use a scrypt-based encryption scheme for its proof-of-work implementation, and also has the advantage of creating blocks every 2.5 minutes instead of every 10 minutes.
Using scrypt means that the chokepoint in the algorithm is memory bandwidth, so it's radically more resistant to the "arms race" escalating beyond GPUs.
You can mine Litecoins now at a semi-decent rate with pretty cheap hardware (if you don't have a card that is effective, buying one will pay for itself in a month or two), and they can be exchanged for bitcoins at roughly a 50-to-1 rate right now.
And it looks like that investment won't be made obsolete any time soon, as happened with bitcoin mining. That's the #1 way to mine for bitcoins on the cheap now: mine Litecoin with GPUs, and trade them for bitcoins (if needed).
If you try to mine bitcoins now with GPUs, you'll lose money hand over fist unless you get truly free electricity (which means you're just doing a slow-motion-theft act).
