Pop Quiz!

Remember when I said there'd be no math on the ONT? Well promise kept.

Now go put on your chemical hats and get your #2 pencils ready.

No peeking or using the internet. You may break the seal and begin....NOW.

We're Number 1 - We're Still Number ONE!!!

In sperm exports. That's right baby - the world is willing to pay hard currency for our made-in-America man seed.

Sperm has become a vigorous (ahem), multi-million dollar global industry. The sperm trade is growing ever larger and ever more international, with more and more kids being born via unknown fathers on distant continents. By some estimates, the United States is the world's largest exporter of sperm, sending vials to dozens of countries every year.

Bet you wish you'd jumped on that sperm tank deal last night now doncha. There's gold in them thar yarbles.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, announced that borrowers who are more than 90 days late on their mortgages will become automatically eligible for a modification to the terms of the home loan. The goal is to reduce monthly payments.

In the past, to be eligible for a mortgage modification, borrowers had to provide documentation they had a financial hardship. They will no longer be required to do so - though providing such documentation will make borrowers eligible for more substantial monthly savings.

A perverse incentive and a moral hazard. All that's missing is punishment of the virtuous to make the trifecta.

Patience: Swede Endures 28-Year Wait for Stockholm Flat

A 64-year-old Swedish woman has finally got the home of her dreams in central Stockholm after waiting on the city's housing queue for 28 years, a story that experts explain is becoming all too common.

Strandvägen is one of the grandest streets in Stockholm. The long boulevard sweeping from Berzelli park along the harbour to the entrance of the Djurgården boasts deluxe hotels and luxury homes.

One of the apartments, right by the bridge leading to Djurgården, will soon be the home to a 64-year-old woman who was more patient than most.

After she joined the queue in 1985 at the age of 36, she is set to take over the home for a monthly rent of 9,320 kronor ($1,430), according to the Dagens Nyheter newspaper (DN).

At least in the Soviet Union you could always bribe a local party member to get an apartment of your own in 15 years tops.

Posted by: logprof at April 02, 2013 10:25 PM (+iA5G) World Series ain't doin' it for people anymore either. Either last season, or the year before, a Sunday Night Football game (Saint-Colts, I think) outdrew a World Series game. I for one have stopped paying attention the past few seasons....and now the Marlins ain't the Florida Marlins anymore, the Wild Card is a stupid hacktastic piece of crap, and the 'Stros are in the AL. Don't know what game this is anymore. ('Cept that my Padres still suck....and I can't watch 'em on TV.)

Sometimes it is more work than it's worth. Depends on how much your time is worth, but yeah, I spent a lot of crazy labor making pennies at one point.

I like South Korea's new President Park. From the Chosun Ilbo...

President Park Geun-hye models herself on former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as the "iron lady" of South Korea, the Wall Street Journal speculated Wednesday.

"Ms. Park, like Mrs. Thatcher, is known for not being intimidated by totalitarian regimes or men in power," the paper said. "When her father, President Park Chung-hee, was assassinated in 1979, Ms. Park was quoted as saying 'Is the border secure?' -- sparking admiration by worrying primarily about the possible threat of a North Korean invasion."

The South Koreans have been planning what to do in the event of another North Korean attack. They're not in the mood to just sit back and take another hit without striking back.

Which means he had the shit in my house, which has always been a great big no-no with me.

So, he sits in jail until his big court date comes up, and then we will see what happens from there. You have my sympathies.  Several years ago my cousin Mark was living with our grandparents while unemployed.  They thought he was going out every day to look for work.  In fact he was breaking into houses around town.  The cops finally tracked him down and searched the house.  A news crew showed up.  My grandparents, in their nightgowns, are standing on the front lawn of their manufactured home on camera telling the cops that they've got the wrong guys and that Mark wouldn't do that when the cops walk out with bags of stolen merchandise.

Nope. Not for the first game of the year. The guy threw more pitches than his manager planned on him throwing. Yu's arm health is more important than a shutout right now. I'm sure Washington wanted Yu out of the game by the 7th inning but couldn't pull him because of the 'event' of the perfect game.

276 My opinion on NASA and Space?

Except for the seeming lack of advance planning for a smoother transition from Gov to civilian based launches, it's actually about time.

Really, the only way a free people will expand into space is by their own (dare I say it?) Enterprise and not the over designed and hidden flawed govt vehicles.

Oh yeah Russia and China may get some places first-est but then I did say "Free Peoples" didn't I?

For space to be truly viable, for the Human Race to actually become long-lived and safe, we must LIVE and work in space as we do on planets but not as mere units of work being directed from some central control. Variation is the insurance policy of nature. Different ideas and modes must be tested in real settings for true progress can be made.

That may entail genetic changes that can only be designed directly and intelligently and not haphazardly. (or at least not quite so random). It will entail man's creative thinking unbridled by concerns of the opinion of politicians, upper administrators and outside opinions or influences.

These sort of changeovers have happened before. The original sea going world explorations took place at the behest and funding of Govt's, greedy for new conquest and exploitable land. The mercantile interests had other fish to fry.

Until the Govt' showed there could be money made and then they entered into the fray and thus was born the world's first great expansion.

Next was the Machine age, the Air Age and then the Space age. Each time Gov't has supplied much of the impetus and the cash to fund expensive but necessary explorations into materials, vehicle design and the human social dynamic that enabled the discovery of further "Frontiers" to explore.

I only regret I will never travel off this planet.

Well, here's a bit of good news from Cheesehead Land: State Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack (what a name!) was reelected tonight, which means the WI Supreme Court stays conservative rather than swinging lib. The seat is supposed to be "non-partisan" (yeah, right) but the guy who ran against her campaigned openly as a lib and a Dem. And he got his ass kicked.

Also good news: a Milwaukee circuit court judge appointed by Walker kept her seat and some dirtball judge who signed the Walker recall petition was voted out and replaced with a conservative and a veteran.

Of course, since this state is purple and has many retards, the election news was not all good. A Dem sleazebag left over from the previous Governor's adminstration was retained as Superindent of Schools and Milwaukee citizens voted in favor of continuing to allow voter registration at the polls, thus making it easier to commit fraud.

Still and all, the Supreme Court Justice election was the biggie, the last hope for the Madison progs and Walker haters. And once again, THEY LOST.

Now, will these people please shut the hell up?

Back in the day, I found that you could listen to a symphony and pick out the second clarinet -- it greatly increased the distance between what you were concentrating on and distractions. And in some cases, ahem, this meant that one's GPA actually went up proportionately to the amount of pot one was consuming.

Then, again, you end up with memories like the time my roommate almost stepped on a sea-lion pup....and then wanted to stay and pet it while I was saying we should bug-out before mom showed up.

382 The glass video must basically be tempered glass. I had some on the bak patio that according to my deductive reasoning was struck by a meteorite. Standing inside I hear the patio table shatter and go outside to see the damage and just figured it just did what tempered glass does (shatter for no apparent reason) then I picked up the thick glass ashtray that was on the table, and it had a conical hole in the enter of it like a bullet-hole hit it straight down. Didn't find a bullet, so it had to be a meteorite.

That's one of those "why the hell do I know this" sort of things. It must have been a footnote somewhere. It predates Bakelite, which I always sort of heard of as the 'first plastic'.

It's like the word 'bitumen'. My fellow students took a class in Chem Eng about fuels (we had to take one outside our department, so we generally picked the most chemistry-like class, to avoid, you know, thinking about anything other than chemistry. Being a graduate student is tragic in many ways.) Anyway, they thought 'bitumen' sounded funny. So we started calling failed reactions, particularly awful chemicals, and finally, anything remotely undesirable, 'bitumen'. That word lives in my head as an expletive, and every time I see it in the news, cf. tar sands, I giggle like an idiot.

414 Baseball has actually been doing great business wise in recent years. Attendance and local TV are good. It's as a national TV draw where it's struggling. MLB just doesn't do a good job of making national stars of anybody outside of Yanks/Sox. MLB is becoming more like the NHL -- very strong local followings but less national. So when a fan's team drops out of contention they stop watching.

When I taught chemistry at the CC, kids found 'moles' difficult, so I told them it was like 'dozen': a funny word for a specific number. Unfortunately, some of them never distinguished between mole and dozen, then blamed me for confusing them. When I pointed out that 12 grams of carbon would then be 12 atoms of carbon, they never blinked. Perhaps they recalled the time when atoms were bigger.

426 When I taught chemistry at the CC, kids found 'moles' difficult, so I told them it was like 'dozen': a funny word for a specific number. Unfortunately, some of them never distinguished between mole and dozen, then blamed me for confusing them. When I pointed out that 12 grams of carbon would then be 12 atoms of carbon, they never blinked. Perhaps they recalled the time when atoms were bigger.

445 A single player can dominate in basketball more than baseball. The result is the best players in the NBA end up winning championships. In baseball it's not uncommon for a great player to never play in a World Series. Even the best player. It makes the NBA easy to follow for casual fans cause almost every year the very best players end up in the NBA Finals. LeBron, Kobe, Jordan, Shaq, Magic, Bird, etc, etc. There is more randomness in baseball. And each player has less control. In the NBA, the stars touch the ball almost every play. In MLB the star only bats 4 times a night. A Cy Young pitcher only pitches every 4th game. The structure of the game of basketball makes it easier to produce TV stars.

I think a person can get well past the middle of the bell curve by just not being militant in their stupidity. There a whole hell of a lot I don't know, so I never faulted my students for not knowing things.  But when confronted with one's abject misunderstanding of basic things, and not noticing the obvious absurdity, it takes a special stupid to just insist there's nothing amiss.

Worse than my freshmen, though, was a chemical engineering student I had in the physical chemistry lab I taught as a grad student, who, to make a long story short, reported negative Kelvin temperatures in a gas expansion experiment. Oh, and pressures of like 10^32 atmospheres. I made him redo it, and he bitched a blue streak, and kept whining 'why should I have to do it over?' . I finally snapped and said, "You'll redo it because someday you might manage a pesticide plant near where I live. So you'll goddammed well figure out where you went wrong or I'll flunk you, shithead." I got an earful from our dept (for being rude and vulgar) and the chem eng department (for threatening to flunk one of their students, which left me dubious about their values, let alone their graduates).

474 412 Baseball has actually been doing great business wise in recent years. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at April 03, 2013 12:15 AM (ZPrif) Hockey doesn't have the big national following, but it has a real passionate fanbase that will watch any hockey. Especially when the playoffs come around. The NBA is becoming like MLB in that only a few teams get any coverage. Oklahoma City should get coverage, and Kevin Durant is the type of player that the NBA needs to market to get the casual fan, but he isn't in Miami, LA, NY, Detroit, or Boston, so he doesn't matter. The only league that has gotten it right is the NFL, but they are starting to fall into the trap of promoting only the "name" teams. The only reason why the Yankees/Red Sox have the stars is because they are the only teams that MLB promotes.

I have a lotion (4 oz Bottle) that for active ingredients says:

Coal tar solution 25% (equivalent to 5% Coal Tar)

Inactive ingredients:

Alcohol 79% (by volume), citric acid, PEG-8, water.

Now can someone explain how a 25% solution and alcohol at 79% can add up? and what's the relationship between the solution to the equivalent and what does it mean?

I have tried google but has not been my friend.

I ask because this stuff is expensive as formulated. I've found a source for coal tar and want to mix my own. But the math it eludes me. Along with understanding what the F they actually mean.

This is a topical medicine and when my skin goes wacky it gets expensive ($30 for that 4 oz bottle)

Any help here?

I think some of that is because of all the networks and sportswriters that fret "oh no small market teams are in the super bowl this year!"  Hey numbnuts, every team will have a story you can push to drum up "interest" even though you don't need to.  All you need for good ratings of a football game is the promise of a good game.  Hell even a crap game on Monday Night Football will probably still get you decent ratings.

We either don't know what kind of backward crazy fucks are living in the woods, or we do, so the prep is just the same.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at April 03, 2013 01:12 AM (Kpn/z) http://preview.tinyurl.com/bwrlt3b http://preview.tinyurl.com/cc8cxtt The first one is a PDF - save that, it's a recipe from a lab course at UNC for exactly what you're dealing with. I don't know how much those ingredients cost but note the final weight is 1.6 kilos. Also note from the other page the use of banana peels. I know salicylic acid related to the peels, but I'm not sure if that's the only relevant thing. Start checking out availability, most or all of the ingredients are available. Remember when looking up prices there are different uses and you need medical or food grade. i.e. don't buy coal tar from a hardware store, because it's not pure. Could have something nasty in it.

531 482 >> I ask because this stuff is expensive as formulated. I've found a source for coal tar and want to mix my own. But the math it eludes me. Along with understanding what the F they actually mean.

BC, I'll throw out a few things on this. First is that coal tar is considered a carcinogen for skin contact. Eek!

Second is that formulation is an art, with many trials required to get a stable suspension. Just because you know the list of ingredients doesn't mean you can make it the same way.

Are they raping you on price? Yep. For 20 bucks, you ought to be able to make a bucket of this stuff (assuming denatured ethanol  as your ethanol source, an idea that's actually a bad one). They probably have your lotion formulated as an emulsion, which takes special mixing equipment to do properly.

Have I discouraged you yet? If not, then the simplest approach would be to find a suitable solvent for the coal tar alone, then use that solution as your lotion. Skip the rest of the formulation and make it fresh each time. Or just mix some of the solution in regular body lotion just prior to application. That will give you emollients for your skin, though the mix won't be stable over time.

I appreciate the input. I already know the affects of coal tar and I also know that besides looking nasty and right on my face, it itches and burns and HURTS if not controlled.

Yes coal tar a bitch but it's been used for a long time for what I'm using it for. My condition is such that milder forms and other chemicals don't work.

Alcohol is used as a solute as it will evaporate faster leaving the coal tar to do it's thing. (as I understand it, it's coal tar's properties that nullifies the diseased skin so that healthy skin grows underneath. by repeated periodic use, the flare ups and problems can be minimized and the usage decreased slightly.)

I've been fighting this for 40 years. Maybe Dermatologists know more about it than they used to but I'd bet it's not much more as they're too busy with other easier diseases and cosmetic effects to want to spend time on a chronic disease that never goes away.

I've used all the cremes, lotions, ointments, pads, mixes, washes, soaps et cetera, et cetera.

Have you ever had this? Seen it? Known anyone who had it?

You can't discourage what is already resigned. I've found something that works and now I'm going to find a way to get the same effect but cheaper. I'll worry about other problems when they show up.

When a boat's seams are leaking, you don't worry about the brightwork needing polishing or the deck needing a wash down.

I wasn't knocking you or your solution to your problem, just pointing out the known hazard of coal tar and skin contact. I made a living as a formulation chemist, so I do know quite a bit about the subject of mixes in general.

The burning sensation you mention is probably due to the coal tar containing poly- aromatic compounds.  The phenols in the tar mixture offset that by acting as a nerve deadener.

Wiki backs up your stance as it is a commonly used topical lotion for several skin conditions. Kinda like aspirin, it just works though they don't really know why.

559 GnuBreed. I'm sorry if my answer seemed sharp. I do appreciate your warning and concern. I get very intense about this because it's an ongoing problem that Medicine can't/won't cure.

The best solution is that it gets diminished so I look normal. Not a pleasant prospect of never having a cure and the unpleasant effects when it acts up or a "cure" doesn't work.

Believe me, I thought long and hard about continued use after I found out how toxic coal tar is. However, I weighed the benefits and the likelihood of another answer and decided best to be getting on with it and hope it works out.

I try other stuff all the time but it never works or doesn't fully work or is more expensive than what I'm using.

561 Bitter Clinger,

My Dad was a derm, he passed away now some time ago, but he was one of those who really took his vocation to heart.  One of the things he was convinced of was that the skin is often a telltale to the emotional life of the patient.  In other words, highly stressed individuals often suffered from chronic, incurables like psoriasis.

Has anyone ever talked with you about reducing stress or developing different ways of dealing with your life's stress-inducing aspects?  It could be a key.

Yeah, state/county jury duty doesn't last as long in general. Grand Jury duty, as mentioned by someone else above, lasts for months and months.

I'd probably beg off on an extended case myself if it came to that; I'm self employed so it would be a serious financial hit to be stuck on an extended trial.

On top of that, the DOJ identified Hileman in a press release as one of the new prosecutors. That's not necessarily uncommon but I'm not sure there's been a case in the last 50 years where *two* prosecutors have been murdered. There may have been specific threats, we don't know that. Someone on the inside may be feeding information to the AB, I have some pretty dark suspicions about this situation but it's all "rumors and shit" so who knows. You can't protect your whole family, on the other hand, these are crazy people, not sure quitting the case would protect them either.

573 568 are "&s" a browser specific problem? Posted by: yankeefifth at April 03, 2013 03:02 AM (Z9EHQ) More of a Javascript-specific problem, though it relates to browsers as well. You could probably make a cross-reference chart, like Safari or Chrome + no javascript = &, IE and Firefox + javascript = boned, etc.

574 Robert Redford to have a starring role in Captain America II

He'll play the corrupt corporate bankster puppet master who sends Capt America off on missions to plump the profits and screw the peeps.   In the end, Capt America discovers how he's been played for decades by this secret corporatist cabal and extracts his revenge...or maybe the banksters have him whacked.

LE in the southwest has become weirder than the freaking cold war spy vs spy shit.   I take it as a given that all levels of LE have been penetrated somewhere at some point by at least a half dozen criminal and/or foreign intelligence services.

Look at what went on with NASA and the Chinese dude.  We don't even try anymore, we invite the security risks right in the front door and make sure they're comfy and given full access...

...then act shocked when we get burned.

570 Mero, I'm pretty sure that the job prospectus for Fed DA mentions 'might be a target for retribution by bunches of unsavory characters'.

Maybe you don't take the job if you can't take the heat?

I'm just spitballin' here.

Posted by: @PurpAv at April 03, 2013 03:24 AM (/gHaE) On top of that, look who's running the DOJ, who they've brought in with them and what their history is. I don't think we'll ever see all of the damage they did. We'll see the consequences, though.

580 Maybe you don't take the job if you can't take the heat? Posted by: GnuBreed at April 03, 2013 03:26 AM (ccXZP) AFAICT 13 prosecutors have been murdered by subjects of investigation during the last 50 years in the US. 2 of them have been in the last three months in one city in Texas. That's not "heat." Maybe his family is notable or vulnerable in some way, maybe he didn't like the behavior of other people involved in the case, security wasn't adequate, etc. Like I said, I don't know enough to judge, I just know enough to recognize a clusterfuck. I appreciate the fact that the government doesn't over-declare terrorism and domestic war and suspend the rule of law and all that. But the AB are domestic terrorists, ain't no two ways about it. And they aren't the only one. Can't say I could do better, but groups like this are a little more trouble than they're worth. There's a line there that's easy enough to cross that no one wants to do it when it's needed. Some days that seems like a good place to be - until gangs take over inner cities and run around murdering prosecutors.

581 It'll take 20 years worth of James Angleton style ultra-paranoid mole hunting to ferret out all the security risks this administration has allowed into damaging positions.

Posted by: @PurpAv at April 02, 2013 11:36 PM (/gHaE)

582 Most of these AB types could be packed away in prison for 10 years at rip on Federal firearms charges if anyone cared to prosecute from that angle.  A felon in possession of a single .22 round could in theory be packed away for 10 years and fined like $250k.

If you can't reform them, then pack them away until they're old and gray.  I got no problem spending money building prisons as long as they're being packed with the right people.

What is the worth of actual justice and law enforcement? Yeah, the whole concept is kinda under the bridge with Progressives in charge and murderers as adjunct professors at Columbia U, but still --- didn't you watch The Untouchables? Hell, that movie is the original source for the expression 'don't bring a knife to a gunfight' AFAIK.

Well, per AP just don't call them 'illegal aliens'.

Cuz that would be wrong.

588 So Mexican Narco Gangs are not included in the mix of perps?

Oh I'm sure they're on the list...right below Fred Rogers and Capt Kangaroo.

This administration has been trying for a couple of years now to reanimate the largely petered out domestic terrorist/white power/militia threat as "a thing".

You could see the shadowy hand of Morris Dees starting to work several years ago.

591 Question computery folks. Woke up to a slug of mailer daemon failure notices. Went to "closed addresses" still on my contact list. I haven't sent anything to those in months. Thoughts?

Posted by: teej at April 03, 2013 01:30 AM (r60DJ)

592 Doesn't look like any computational machine people are awake to answer. Guessing here, but possible email hijack? Is it only old recipient addresses that you have sent anything to for a long time?

Posted by: otho at April 03, 2013 01:42 AM (9gNQd)

593 Woke up to a slug of mailer daemon failure notices. Went to "closed addresses" still on my contact list. I haven't sent anything to those in months. Thoughts? Operating system? Anti-virus software? Running NoScript? My guess is some site tried to use your address book to spam your contact list -- and you got notified of bad addresses. If you don't run NoScript, you should.

Posted by: Regular Moron [/i] at April 03, 2013 01:54 AM (feFL6)

594 One other thing, add your own name and email address to your contact list. If someone uses your computer to spam everyone on that list, you'll get a spam e-mail, too, and be able to track down who is the bastid.

Posted by: Regular Moron [/i] at April 03, 2013 02:00 AM (feFL6)

595 What type of mail is it? A free web-based account like Gmail or Hotmail? Those frequently get hacked remotely without access to the user's computer. If so, change the password on the account. If the problem keeps happening then you've likely got an infection you need removed.

Posted by: epobirs at April 03, 2013 02:06 AM (kcfmt)

596 Something else. Go to one of the returned emails and look at the time stamp. Most emails get sent and bad addresses get returned almost immediately. Then look at history of surfing yesterday. It's probably a site you visited minutes before. Next, and this step is up to you -- add your name to the contact list, visit the suspected site, and wait to get an email. If you get an email, report them as malicious spammers. I wrote quite a bit of Javascript years ago and can tell you from experience that it can do things on your computer you may not want it to do. Which is why I recommend downloading and installing NoScript so that you have to specifically 'permit' a site to run Javascript beforehand. Some troll here or on some other site could put up a link and cause havoc on your computer. Why give 'em the satisfaction if you can easily prevent it.
