I'm back my pretties. Sorry for the ONT-lessness the last few days - I was on vacation and asked the Cobs to fill-in for me. Promises were made, assurances given and...well we all know what happened.
Kudos to chemjeff for stepping up and walking the ONT wall when it was needed.
Boston Bombers had M-4-style AR-15s
The authorities found an M-4 carbine rifle - a weapon similar to ones used by American forces in Afghanistan - on the boat where the younger suspect was found Friday night in Watertown, Mass., 10 miles west of Boston.
Two handguns and a BB gun that the authorities believe the brothers used in an earlier shootout with officers in Watertown were also recovered, said one official briefed on the investigation. The authorities said they believe the suspects had fired roughly 80 rounds in that shootout, in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was fatally wounded, the official said.
Yet no license for any of the guns. Clearly a win for universal background checks and strong Massachusetts-style gun control.
Also note that they had no license for these either.
Clearly we must institute common-sense gunpowder control too.
Also check out the wikipedia article on the Mad Bomber of NYC to see that domestic bombing campaigns are sadly not new.
The wise -- as opposed to most of the highly educated -- know, among many other things, that when you give people something for nothing, you produce ungrateful people; that when you obscure the differences between men and women, you end up with many aimless men and angry women; that when you give children "self-esteem" without their earning it, you produce narcissists who enter adulthood incapable of handling life; that if you do not destroy evil, it will proliferate; and that if you are kind to the cruel, you will be cruel to the kind.

Defeating the Soviets with Pollock
During the Cold War amongst its other weapons the CIA employed surprise, fear, more surprise, and abstract expressionism.
The decision to include culture and art in the US Cold War arsenal was taken as soon as the CIA was founded in 1947. Dismayed at the appeal communism still had for many intellectuals and artists in the West, the new agency set up a division, the Propaganda Assets Inventory, which at its peak could influence more than 800 newspapers, magazines and public information organisations. They joked that it was like a Wurlitzer jukebox: when the CIA pushed a button it could hear whatever tune it wanted playing across the world.
The next key step came in 1950, when the International Organisations Division (IOD) was set up under Tom Braden. It was this office which subsidised the animated version of George Orwell's Animal Farm, which sponsored American jazz artists, opera recitals, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's international touring programme. Its agents were placed in the film industry, in publishing houses, even as travel writers for the celebrated Fodor guides. And, we now know, it promoted America's anarchic avant-garde movement, Abstract Expressionism.
Why?
"Regarding Abstract Expressionism, I'd love to be able to say that the CIA invented it just to see what happens in New York and downtown SoHo tomorrow!" he joked. "But I think that what we did really was to recognise the difference. It was recognised that Abstract Expression- ism was the kind of art that made Socialist Realism look even more stylised and more rigid and confined than it was. And that relationship was exploited in some of the exhibitions.
Science: Scrotal Temperature and Kilts
Analysis of literature concerning scrotal temperature and spermatogenesis and fertility. Wearing a Scottish kilt in a traditional ('regimental') way may have clear health-related benefits. Kilt wearing likely produces an ideal physiological scrotal environment, which in turn helps maintain normal scrotal temperature, which is known to be beneficial for robust spermatogenesis and good sperm quality.
Conclusion Based on literature on scrotal temperature, spermatogenesis and fertility, the hypothesis that men who regularly wear a kilt during the years in which they wish to procreate will, as a group, have significantly better rates of sperm quality and higher fertility.
Some men are inspired to greatness by poop-time and solitude. In fact some of the geek-wittiest graffiti I've ever seen was in the engineering department bathrooms - it was positively AoSHQ comment-worthy.
Danish Beer 'Too Sexy' for Sweden
Eh - the Scandis sure are picky about what they decide to get uptight over.
A cartoon depiction of a topless woman has been deemed too sexy for Sweden's state run liquor store monopoly Systembolaget, forcing a brewery in Denmark to change the beer bottle's label for the Swedish stores. The bottle features a cartoon image of a woman who is half submerged in what appears to be a bathtub full of water. Above her, the word "Lust" appears in capital letters.
The beer is part of a seven-part Sinner Series, from Danish brewers Amager Bryghus, with each of the sins represented by a cartoon image on different bottles.

All that means is that guys who wear kilts have so much leisure time without any prospects for getting laid that they are willing to jerk off into a cup for some middle-aged poofer who claims to want to study their sperm.

--Where I used to work in Cambridge, MA, near MIT, in the stall in the corner of the men's room there was a chip in the paint and plaster. The first graffiti-ist drew an arrow at it and wrote "Italy." Someone else replied, "Italy? Looks more like West Virginia" (which was true; the chip was oval-shaped). The reply (probably by the first scrawler) was, "No, I mean the island" (orsomething like that, must have meant Sicily.
Finally, a new graffitum read, "Geography 101, Final Exam: Which of the following looks like Italy: A) [actual shape of Italy, including Sicily and Sardinia] B) [shape of the chip in the plaster] C) [pizza with a slice taken out]"
I still LMAO thinking of it.

Yes, and Boston and Brookline require you pass a police live fire exam with .38s before getting a permit. Naturally, those two locales do not let anyone take that expensive exams, so 14 year old thugs can have handguns but not the average law abiding citizen.
Speedbump and the Snoz used firework mortars from NH to obtain the black power needed for their devices.
Some asshole reporter this evening for NPR/WGBH public radio/tv here in Boston was trying to claim they only had one handgun/airsoft gun despite there being plenty of written reports, first hand audio and first hand video demonstrating otherwise. Fucking fuckers terrorists and media alike.

Can't you roll over?

Actually, if he'd used his deity's favored weapon, he'd have been cool. Sadly, Mormon history seems to indicate repeating rifles rather than bladed weapons...

Nah... Swords are good. One guy in particular in the Book of Mormon is famous for disarming *cough* an awfully large number of opponents with his sword...
(REALLY bad pun for those who know what I'm referring to)
I'm wondering if the Bishop served a mission in Japan back in the day. Might explain his interest in weapons like that.
Also of note - the article mentions that "neighbors" came out to help when he confronted the mugger. How many places are there where that little extra bit would take place?

I think one of history's best kept secrets is how well Catholicism did at subverting the Native Polytheistic thoughts and rolling that bent into "the saints"
it defeated every polytheism it met through this method.

THe caps on the stock footage are done up to pro levels...
one of the most common things to go wrong with pipe bombs and field expedient munitions is spillage of explosive in poorly sealed or formed chambers....
the other is not using a proper filler to stabilize the load of the explosive and clumping or piling of said explosive or fouling of powder.
Pipebombs are a deceptively "easy' field expedient device from what the combat engineers I've asked have said....
they suggested all things being equal going with Napalm (I have a few good recipes) or old school molotovs...

"Thick sliced bacon with brown sugar and a touch of cayenne"
One of my favorites. My version is to cut strips of thick sliced Gwaltney bacon into 1 inch or so long sections, and cook until almost crisp. Pat dry, drain pan and filter renderings. Combine brown sugar, molassas, filtered renderings and agave syrup, stirring over high heat until beginning to thicken. Stir in bacon chunks, and add cayenne + paprika to taste. Remove from heat, sprinkle sea salt, allow to cool (be sure to grease pan 1st), break into crunchy chunks of goodness.

AltonJackson,
If you are still here. I am a tax preparer and would point out that most 401(k)s at a previous employer would not let you take a loan if they cannot withhold payment from your paychecks.
When you make a withdrawal, you can have them withhold the 10% penalty and also an additional percentage or set amount to cover the income tax you will owe on the withdrawal. If you call whomever is administering the plan, they can help you figure out how much to withhold when you take the money out.
Otherwise, you can, as some have suggested above, make an estimated tax payment using a form 1040-ES, which you can get from the irs.gov web site.

"maple bacon doughnuts, bacon crunch ice cream...."
We've done the homemade bacon ice cream. Took a few tries, but worked it out rather well (IMO). Trick was to cook the bacon to just before burning, and then figuring how to get the rendered drippings to mix w/the ice cream (secret is to let the drippings cool to just above room temps, then mix in w/heavy cream and egg yolks - that holds the oily drippings in suspension and spreads the flavor rather nicely. Mix it into the process later and you get chunks of gelled fat. Not good). Serve sprinkled w/a bit of sea salt (trust me, it's great).

Thanks. Unreal how expensive it is and that's not due to the exchange rate which is close to parity (they also use "dollar"). For instance, a case of good, but not awesome, beer is $50. FIFTY??? Some of the cost is due to where they are and having only 23million peeps in a huge land mass, but a lot of it is due to the socialism they're finally beginning to dislike -- I spoke with a clerk at a gothic clothing shop (from which I mail-ordered years ago when our $ was sodomizing theirs) and he told me that many small bizzes are going under because of all the labor costs -- tons of paid holidays, leaves, superannuation (retirement), etc., etc., etc. There's also a budding greenie rebellion.

Mmmmmm. Lust beer. Looks good.
Will Gluttony have a pic of Rosie O'Donnell on it? Hairy Rosie O'Donnell.... cause I'm pretty sure that one is gonna bankrupt the beer company.

@422 The locals hunkered down and retained their ways best they could. Thus, the Samaritans.
-----------------------
I thought the Samaritans were the ones who got left behind (and intermarried with foreigners) after the Babylonians razed Jerusalem and marched the Kingdom of Judah into captivity.

nerdygirl,
If you end up inheriting the stocks from your parents, the basis will become the fair value on the date of death, so if they are sold about the same time they are inherited, there should not be much capital gains.
You may want to inquire of the company holding the annuities about the taxability of those would be if they are inherited. You should also be able to have them withhold taxes if withdrawals are made, at any time, so you, or your dad, don't have to come up with the taxes at the end of the year.

No, the Samaritans are called "Samaritans" because they were associated with Samaria which used to be the north kingdom's capital. (The Samaritans' actual holy place was and is Shechem / Nablus.) So the Samaritans were always northern.

The Ethiopian "Falasha" used to tell visitors that they were of the tribe of Dan. That would count as a "lost tribe".
But the Lemba (associated with Great Zimbabwe and further south) - these seem to be descended from traders from the Yemen. They would just be Jews, Yemenis converted to Judaism, non-Jewish Yemenis and Muslims. Mix them together and you'll get "Jewish" practices like avoidance of pork and a seven-day week; but they could equally be Muslim or even pre-Islamic "Abrahamic".

Reviewing the 500+ comments I have two observations.
1. Lust Beer is meh. I prefer 'Sloth' amber ale or 'Gluttony' porter.
2. Non-pharmacologic suggestion for difficulty getting to sleep. I read a chapter in the Bible and then do 2 or 3 Sudoku puzzles. You may laugh, but putting the numbers in their boxes has some sort of ordering effect on my subconscious and allows the sleep to come. Me and Mrs. M both use that technique.

Welcome to the horde.
From what I gather most of what was Gaul and Iberia were Celts. That changed when tribes from the east were displaced by Central Asian tribes ( think Mongols, Huns, etc) Moving Goths and others into former Celtic land.
There was a land bridge between modern France / England/ Ireland before the warming period after the little Ice Age. Once the oceans rose the "Island" Celts developed their own society, cut off from the mainland.
Apparently the Celts had a vision of the perfect land , something called Brasil, or something close to that, and kept traveling west to find it.
Sorry for the long post.

One of whom was Scot 'Mad Jack' Churchill. An excerpt : "
Mad Jack won his first Military Cross during the British retreat to Dunkirk. It was during the retreat that he killed his first German with a longbow, using that and two machine guns until running out of ammunition and escaping to the main British force through German lines.
After seeing decorated action raiding Nazi-held Norway, Churchill took over a Commando unit and joined in the storming of Salerno Bay in Italy wearing silver buttons, carrying bagpipes, and armed with a bow and arrow and a hilted Scottish sword called a claymore. “Churchill,” his 1996 obituary would read, “believed an assault leader should have a reputation which would at once demoralize the enemy and convince his own men that nothing was impossible.” “Any officer who goes into action without his sword,” he reportedly said, “is improperly dressed.”

Seeing that Nate kid wrestling JarJar the Bomber brought back long-repressed memories. Sad to say, I wrestled in high school. As a sophomore I was 5' 10" and wrestled 112 lb weight class. I looked more like JarJar than Nate, and I was really bad. My mother used to laugh that I was so skinny that my wrestling tights weren't. My varsity record was 0-15.

The EPA, NEA, IRS all screw the little guy trying to climb the ladder of success. Pols and their juiced in brethren try their best to beat the little guy down and out of the natural competition. Most times it's not the winds themselves that do the most damage.
It's the flying debris.
Propel a 2x4 at 125mph and it'll go through concrete block.
Cars cows and everything the twister sucks off the crowd goes flying at some point. Some comes straight back down and other stuff get't slung across the countryside.
That's why they tell you to get low and they tell you to get in a corner or a doorway in case the building implodes.
God doesn't like mobile homes for some reason.
Maybe if people built them in the shape of a beetle he'd let them slide.

We can beat them at their own game, but we have to stop being patsies.
First -- no statistics except as an after thought -- everything must be an anecdote. Personalize everything.
Second -- never talk about solutions -- just sell the problem, the problem, the problem.
Third -- speak about 4 things incessantly, and never allow anyone to change the subject:
a) the left is behaving irresponsibly.
b) the left is not being sensible or reasonable.
c) the left is not listening.
d) the left does not care.
Example: How Mitt Romney would have been the winner -- he would have said things like --
"Madge Johnson lives in Rock Ridge. Madge is being bled out. She and her recently deceased husband worked their whole lives to save enough money for retirement. Thanks to the policies of these irresponsible jerks, her savings don't earn enough interest to pay her bills. So, she is draining her savings. Any one who buys gas and food knows that inflation is all around us. Even though Madge and her husband did everything the way they were supposed to do it, the irresponsible jerks running our government have ruined it." (now he adds the statistic) "And you might be one of about 25 million Americans in the same situation as Madge. Your problem is not going to be solved because Barack Obama doesn't listen and Barack Obama doesn't care."
"Roger and Sandy Brown live in Metropolis. They are 44 years old. Roger and Sandy are now supporting their kids, their parents, and it looks like they will soon be having the kids they sent to college move back in with them because there are no jobs." Etc, Etc -- (he describes their problem and then closes with a statistic that allows the other ____ million people to project themselves into Roger and Sandy Brown). Then -- drive home the point again -- "Your problem is not going to be solved because Barack Obama doesn't listen and Barack Obama doesn't care."
Then he moves on to the college kid that will never be able to pay his debt and can no longer discharge it in bankruptcy. The phrase 'debt slavery' is used. Then -- drive home the point again -- "Your problem is not going to be solved because Barack Obama doesn't listen and Barack Obama doesn't care."
He would have kept going from one kind of situation after another -- each anecdote would describe a real story about a real person. He would then invite others to project themselves into the life of the real person he described -- and then drive home the 4 big points over and over and over--
a) the left is behaving irresponsibly.
b) the left is not being sensible or reasonable.
c) the left is not listening.
d) the left does not care.
at that point -- the right would own all of the emotional arguments.
The left has turned to bullshit emotion because it is all they have left. Take away the monopoly on emotion and all they will be left with is the bullshit.

And you know this how?
The plans I've seen are for bare service and no fancy phones. They'll try to talk you into upgrades, but you pay for those with whatever cash you have.
the people to be mad at are the ones making a ton of money off this deal by providing a basic service and overcharging the Federal Gov't for doing so.
Just like the drug companies and health providers double bill, overcharge and all sorts of shenanigans to take advantage of medicare and medicaid.
Once when I got admitted on medicaid, I had doctors showing up that had no earthly reason to be there. I asked and was told that the hospital gets more money and the doctors can submit a consulting fee charge. So a diagnosis that would've cost $300 if they'd stuck to the obvious winds up at $1200 by the time they add all the tests they don't need to perform and the other specialties get called in.
They whine and moan about how little medicare and medicaid pay per code but they neglect to mention how they pad the codes and the bill. Plus some hospitals will also bill the patient even though they're supposed to be covered by an insurance policy. If YOU pay they take the money even if the Insurance company also pays. If you catch them they go "oops, computer error".

It went to those who were his pals and other assorted political bottom feeders. A lot went to the nets for their coverage and ads. a lot went for that stupid orca which was a planned failure. (something they could blame for a loss. Which they did.)

The plans I've seen are for bare service and no fancy phones. They'll try to talk you into upgrades, but you pay for those with whatever cash you have.
Many of them won't take the cheap, bare-bones phone cause it doesn't have enough bells and whistles. They save money by receiving free health care, free rent (title 8 or whatever it's called), food stamps, etc. Then buy the flashy blingy smart phones with their expendable currency. And I know this because I see them playing with their bling phone while swiping their ebt card when I'm standing in the line at HyVee or Wal Mart.

He is effectively asking for people to volunteer to be anecdotes.
A smart person would then vet them entirely, because once this method takes off every one of the anecdotes will get the full "Joe the Plumber Treatment" from the assholes in the media.
However, real stories about real people have incredible power. Think of it this way --- "30 million people will have blah, blah, blah ...." Most people say to themselves, "that is so sad, but it won't happen to me." Take exactly the same issue and make it: "Tom Johnson is 37 and has two kids. Tom had blah, blah, blah, and so did 30 million other people." A lot of those same people will start their thought with: "Hey, I'm 38 and I have 2 kids. That coulda been me!!" Don't know why. It just is.

Romney's greatest failure was not secretly being the kind of nasty son of a bitch it takes to win the Presidency. W got well in touch with his dark during his substance abusing days and could channel that when he needed to.
I don't think Romney is some angel in human form but I think he genuinely didn't have it in him when it came to pursuing the office. He might a have made a good cabinet member.

Yup. It is simple. But, it isn't easy. We are in a war for our own souls. The only thing I can ask is that we don't chose defeat without actually fighting the fight.
We are behind and we are losing, but we aren't beat.

@791
You guys can second-guess Romney all you want, but the bottom line is that about 2/3, IIRC, of the white folks figured it out, while most of the non-white folks (especially the blacks) wouldn't trust the "rich white guy".
The disappointment is about the "ground game", where Romney supposedly had this awesome new computer system that was going to kick ass, but instead failed miserably. You'd think Romney, as a successful business guy, would have been more on top of that, but I suspect he was too "old school" on that point, and you don't get a second try.
In contrast, all Obama has EVER done is campaign, and this time he had vast sums of money and all the time in the world. Between being a narcissist and a professional political activist, what the hell else would any expect that he would do? The reason he never stops is because that's who he is, and because the "takers" whole job is to "take". The only way they know how to get stuff is to "take'. Expecting them to do anything but dream up ways to scam things using the govt is like expecting a bank robber to give up crime and start a business. They wouldn't know how, even if they wanted to.

Oh, and let's not overlook the media, which WAY outdid itself, to elect their Liberal Messiah. Normally, they're just biased; this time they were a big-time propaganda machine - even to the point of barely reporting two major scandals that would have threatened ANY incumbent, normally.
Yet, again, Romney won a decisive edge ANYWAY - among the white vote.

this is why "sell the problem" is so important.
The Repubs think the whole answer is to be Reagan -- Mr. Optimist. Well, that worked for Reagan cuz that is who he actually was.
"Sell the problem" allows a completely different approach. It is not really an attempt to win the non-white vote -- it is just an attempt to make the non-white vote start talking about the real problems.
Example:
"Jamal Anderson is 23 years old. He has never had a job that paid over $1 above the minimum wage. The unemployment rate where he lives is over 35 percent. It has been that way every single year since 1967. We can make Jamal's problem go away, but we are never going to get our chance because Barack Obama isn't listening and Barack Obama does not care."
"Felix Rodriguez spends every day trying to find work. One of his biggest problems is ...., etc., etc."
In reality, none of this will be enough to reverse the built-in racial bias among voters that feel they must vote according to their skin color. However, it might be enough to keep them from being in a big hurry to vote for the other guy.

When some town/city decides to start giving some business a hard time, its not worth resisting or fighting it.
Start looking for places to relocate right away and don't look back.
The town of Boca Raton viewed IBM as a bottomless ATM for decades. When the final straw came, IBM closed the plant and moved all operations to NC and TX and sold a billion+ dollar facility and property for $46M and told Boca to go fuck themselves.
It took over 10 years for the local economy and housing market to recover from that loss.

Yep, Boca was free-wheeling renegade within the (at the time) staid corporate culture.
Unsanctioned guerrilla efforts/projects were tolerated and if they panned out became part of official products. I was a (in)famous practitioner of this approach when I thought stuff could be improved with a little "off plan" work.
I usually rolled into the office at the crack of noon or 2pm and it was tolerated...they liked what was on them floppy diskettes I had in my pocket from the previous all-nighter working at home.
