We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I. oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

'Stop Thinking We're Violent,' the Terrorist Thought
Okay Frum makes a funny.
Quote of the day."[H]e was angry that the world pictures Islam as a violent religion."
From an e-mail to a New York Times reporter by the former brother-in-law of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, explaining the Boston bomber's motives.
Also the Onion weighs in on this why terrorists are so unfairly accused of terrorism.
Zubeidat Tsarnaeva Sure is a Charmer
It's a real mystery why her boys went bad and started killing people.
"Ben Affleck will live on $1.50 for a day, then go back to his real life"
To make you aware of poverty or something.
Oscar-winning millionaire Ben Affleck will live on just $1.50 for (at least) one day next week, all while knowing that he can go back to his regular, multi-million dollar life. The actor will live on the meager amount for poverty awareness campaign Live Below the Line, the campaign announced on its Facebook page Monday.
Affleck will tweet his experience, as well as what he is eating, on his personal Twitter account. The goal of the campaign is to have celebrities - Sophia Bush, Josh Groban, Hunter Biden and Debi Mazaar will also do the challenge - raise awareness and funds for their chosen charities. Affleck's fundraising will go toward the charity he founded, Eastern Congo Initiative.
But this isn't the first time Ben has suffered on your behalf - let's go back to the 2004 campaign:
Friday was the Edwardses' 27th anniversary, so, in keeping with tradition, they hit the Newburgh Wendy's, along with the Kerrys, campaign mascot Ben Affleck and accompanying press crew. The photo-op didn't go smoothly. Kerry went over to say hi to some marines, who turned out to be Bush supporters and resented the interruption to their lunch. More telling was Teresa Heinz Kerry. She pointed to the picture of the bowl of chilli above the clerk's head: "What's that?" she asked. He explained that it was something called "chilli" and she said she'd like to try a bowl. The Senator also ordered a Frosty, a chocolate dessert. They toyed with them after a fashion, and then got back on the bus.
It then emerged that Wendy's had just been an appetiser. The campaign advance team had ordered 19 five-star lunches from the Newburgh Yacht Club for Kerry, Edwards, Affleck and co to be served back on the bus: shrimp vindaloo, grilled diver sea scallops, prosciutto, wrapped stuffed chicken, etc.
I'm not sure whether Ben had the shrimp and Teresa the scallops, but, either way, it turns out John Edwards is right: there are two Americas - one America where folks eat at Wendy's, another America where the elite pass an amusing half-hour slumming among the folks at Wendy's and then chow down on the Newburgh Yacht Club's specials of the day.
I guess this is a kind of poverty cosplay for the elite. Next they'll have fake peasant villages set up so they can eat their $1.50 meals authentically.
Do Not Mess With Angry Morman Bishop/Samurai
A Samurai sword-wielding Mormon bishop helped a neighbor woman escape a Tuesday morning attack by a man who had been stalking her.Kent Hendrix woke up Tuesday to his teenage son pounding on his bedroom door and telling him somebody was being mugged in front of their house. The 47-year-old father of six rushed out the door and grabbed the weapon closest to him -- a 29-inch high carbon steel Samurai sword.
He came upon what he describes as a melee between a woman and a man. His son stayed inside to call 911 while he approached the man along with other neighbors who came to help. The martial arts instructor didn't hesitate in drawing the sword and yelling at him to get on the ground.
..."I yelled at him, `I've got your DNA and I've got your license plate: You are so done,"' Hendrix said.
What the attacker didn't know was that Hendrix has 4th degree black belt in Kishindo and keeps a 29" long, high-carbon-steel Samurai katana by his bed.
Could be worse I guess.

the US $100 bill is the most counterfeited bill in the world. The Treasury Dept keeps changing it to stay ahead of the counterfeiters.
Yet, those who counterfeit it the most are the most legal of them. #TheFed

oh Jones, the new Gove school was already built. They had planned to turn the old one into a community center or something. The new Gove school got torn down (was it 2005?) because of low enrollment due to the end of bussing and no one wanted to go to that craptastic concrete school, so now it is a craptastic concrete parking lot for National Jewish.
In the meantime after more than a decade the old University of Colorado Health Sciences Center sits languishing at a huge cost to the University (and the city of Denver) because the residents of that neighborhood are too stuck up to accept a WalMart in their midst and prefer crumbling old buildings where homeless teens and drug addicts congregate because those sure don't drive down home values as much as a WalMart!

I think it would be a challenge to eat on $1.50 for just one day because a lot of times the more economical thing to do is to buy things in bulk and then when you divide it out it may come out to $1.50 for the day. But to buy the food that makes up what you would eat for $1.50 individually seems like it would add up to more than that.
Did that just make any sense? Because my contract project is sapping all the sense right out of my head.

Factoid: In the final stages of the collapse, Wiemar Germany didn't even bother printing new higher denominations, they just rubber stamped new denominations on old existing currency that had already been printed.

So, did anyone else know that there's a sequel to 300 coming out?
Nope. Xenophon's Anabasis?
300 is one of those movies that I am really ambivalent about: It is absolutely awful history - virtually everything is wrong, from costumes to government structures to motivations to narrative - but it annoys all the right people for many of the right reasons.

It's an experiment. After Mail in rebate they cost $2 a piece ($4 before the rebate.)
Since we have to relandscape anyway (and everything else is just annuals, some herbs, and some seeds my wife bought) even if they die, we're out nothing but the time really.
If it works, we might replace our barberry bushes (that were almost a story tall when we bought the house) with roses. Still not sure yet.

Last night's ONT, which I read this morning, there was a discussion about Scottish ancestors. If you have the time and interest, do the research. You might find neat stuff like this.
My father's research found that we came from the Scottish Clan Maxwell from the SW Lowlands near Dumfries on the border with England. They owned Caelaverlock Castle for many years and fought the English King Edward I. They were also Border Reivers (raiders and thieves, Land Pirates).
Later in our Civil War two Maxwell brothers were Union Artillerymen. One brother was thrown in the stockade for punching out an officer. His brother broke him out and he was declared a deserter. He changed his name and joined another Union Artillery unit. Years later his widow applied for veterans benefits but was denied because of the desertion charge. It took an act of congress to get her the benefits.
For some reason finding out my ancestors included reivers, hard core fighters, and a healthy disrespect for authority is more heartwarming that if they were rich snooty bluebloods.

Not gonna lie, even if they die I'm not sure for $2/piece we'll be replacing them. The menards is about 30 minutes away meaning I'd burn that in gas (we didn't go there just for the roses, they had some tile we needed for backspash, indoor plant pots, grand opening sale. It was a thing.)

ExSnipe at April 24, 2013 10:02 PM (PBm/l):
Read "Albion's Seed" by David Hackett Fischer. He has a very interesting chapter on the Scots-Irish and their history in the English/Scottish borderlands and in colonial America. The other British folkways Fischer examined are the Puritans of New England, the aristocrats of Virginia, and the Quakers of PA and Delaware. It helped me understand the origins of our regional differences, which, needless to say, are still strong.
The Scots-Irish were badasses.

Yeah, it's close to 6 hours where we've put them. Our house faces west and we just had a tree removed (Which opened up a ton of sun.) We're still getting a handle on the exact position of the sun, but this area appears to get reasonable sun starting at 11-12 and then head on direct sun from about 2-7.

The middle of the Midwest, the Gateway to the west in fact.
Menards is making progress moving our direction.
If it matters, I had enough foresight to buy rose fertilizer (extended release stuff) and I know not to put it in for a few weeks after planting.
The front is probably going to have to be where the roses go, it gets the most sun.
We're a corner lot, and have this huge swatch in our back yard we want to put a "rain garden" because our neighbors behind us sit about 4 feet uphill and their roof runoff comes pouring through our side yard, causing some draining in the basement.
The rain garden (hippie though it sounds) can catch that, and the French drain me and several of my "willing" friends are putting in in a few weeks will handle the rest.

Any knowledge of these "shrub roses" I've read about?
Like I said if we can make even 1 $2 rose half work, we're thinking of ripping up the barberries (which are ugly, and hurt like hell to prune even with leather gloves) and replacing them, and shrub roses sound like they'd add some curb appeal.
(The current barberries are about 3-4 feet high, so I guess we could do full on rose bushes too, but we'd like something more hedgelike since it's the front of the house.)

I have a theory that there is only so much decency and sanity in each family, and if you end up the 11th or 12th kid, odds are it has all been taken before you got there, so you end up being the psycho, or socio, or whatever-olio that the rest of the family ends up moving away from, if you don't end up in jail or shot dead.
The one who ends up with the family farm? Looney-ville.
Or something like that. Pans out concerning my mother (the youngest in her brood) and my brother (the youngest in ours), and also among the uncles and cousins, etc.
Could just be that my family is unusually batshit crazy.

When we started pealing back the mulch we found a plastic tarp under it.
Not landscaping plastic, a full on non-water permeable tarp. (Which explains why the mulch kept washing away I suppose.)
I guess since the house was vacant (estate sale) they didn't want any yard work at all (strangely the other side of the patio had no such thing and was full of weeds.
Thankfully it came up easy enough.

The rain garden is on hold for at least a season. I plan to apply for some grant money (since MO Botanical Garden wants to clean up the storm water run off around here they're giving it away)
The first round didn't go so well and w/o my income, we need to pass on round 2 (but round 3 may work.)
Also we need to get the driveway replaced, the asphalt is starting to pothole and we're tracking little bits of it in the house. (So that moved up on the priority list.)

Actually "Cis-gendered" is just a moronic way of saying "normal."
Hence opposite of "trans"
It stems from the fact that biologically humans are "cis normative" (meaning that our enzymes are all in cis arrangement and interact with cis molecules.)
In chemistry "Trans" is the opposing form of "Cis" so they transliterated it (no pun intended) into their crappy pop psych.
There are social construction elements of gender to be sure, but the vast majority of "gender" has to do with "sex." (which some lefties won't admit. I know one who tries to argue even "sex" is socially constructed which is moronic.)
Like everything the left takes something that is acceptable in a narrow sense (social gender roles) and carries it way to fucking far.
Posted by: tsrblke at April 24, 2013 06:47 PM (GaqMa)
Thus "cis-gendered" means a man who thinks he's a chick, or a woman who thinks she's a guy.

Long story short, he lost the house....didn't pay the property taxes. A whole $1k a year. Oh, and he didn't tell my sister until after it was sold at a tax auction. The house was in all 3 of our names. I invented new curse words the day she told me that.

Before he went completely nutso and starting having students watch people use a sex saw on stage J. Michael Baily had an interesting idea about "transgendered" biological males: that it was a form of autoeroticism a sexual fixation on oneself so strong they imagine themselves as woman. He wrong a non-academic book about it called "The man who would be Queen"
So a bunch of transgendered professors in completely different fields (like Comp sci and math) tried to tank his career because they didn't like that idea.
Then, after finally escaping that he want full on libtard anyway (hence the sex saws on stage, in a class) but he was no pretty much protected (having survived the character assassination attempt.) So...uhhh..make of that what you will.

My brother-in-law comes from a family of 12. I was going to say they all turned out fine, but I got into a screaming match about Walker with one of them - a real libtard. We were literally screaming "f you!" in each other's faces. So I guess the theory that one is bound to go off the rails is correct.
I know another family of 12 and all of them were fine except for one of the older ones, a creepy guy who ended up going to jail for sexually abusing his own daughter. The rest of the family has basically written him off as dead. I was good friends with one of the girls, a sweet, wonderful person. She died of a brain tumor at age 50 - while her turd of an elder brother lives and breathes.

Exactly the leftists you imagine will protest dedication of new Bush library at SMU
“It’s quite disturbing,” protestor-on-the-street Hadi Jawad told KHOU. “It’s quite disheartening to see this monument, this edifice here in Dallas, Texas.”
Jawad also told the Houston CBS affiliate that he has “skin in the game” because he is “of Iraqi descent.”
He said he is still mad incensed about the war, calling it “the unnecessary and unjustifiable, the immoral and illegal war that Bush and Cheney took us into.”
====
http://tinyurl.com/62ghka
[O]n August 5th of this year (200
, Jawad heard that Cindy Sheehan
wanted to go to Crawford. He sent her an e-mail inviting her to the
Peace House, and the next day drove her down to Crawford. The CPH became
the in-town connection for the month long vigil at Camp Casey.
The Peace House in Crawford is a busy place these days, with
renovations, meetings, and a “homecoming” for Sheehan on Thanksgiving.
Jawad says, “How easy it is to feed hundreds of people is the essence of
what we do.”
Jawad and Wolf feel that the efforts of the Dallas Peace Center and the Crawford Peace House have raised the consciousness of this whole areaÂ…

Here's what I want these spoiled liberal Hollywood fuckheads to do:
Live for a couple of months in a bad neighborhood.
And when I say, "a bad neighborhood", I mean a REALLY BAD neighborhood. The kind of place where police response times are extremely slow or nonexistent because the cops are actually frightened to go in there, and slow-roll it when they get a 9-1-1 call.
I want the asshole celebrities in question to live there totally incognito, disguised as ordinary schmucks, with no burly armed personal security. In a cheap apartment with flimsy doors and a single chain lock to keep the wolves out.
And *then* I want to know what they think about gun ownership after living through that. If they do live through it. If they don't? The pool of shallow celebrities is deep. We'll pull up some others to fill in for the newly missing.

First of all, ditch the $1.50 a day. That's a gimmick. Try 5 or 10 dollars a day and do it for a month. One day is stupid and proves nothing. So he has good intentions. Well good for him. It's meaningless and a dollar fifty a day for ONE DAY gives him no insight into anything.

I think somebody upthread mentioned it already, but "poor" people in America would be the 1% almost anywhere else in the world.
If Ben Affleck wants to make a point, have him come live in a village in Afghanistan for a month. Even a decent-sized city like Jalalabad.
Our terps make more than an ANA colonel, and it works out to less than $1000 a month. They are rich by local standards, but they can't get normal things like diaper rash ointment or OTC meds for their kids.

I just (re)discovered Windows 2000 runs fine on a Cyrix 686 chip, but XP refuses to install because the 686 doesn't implement the CPUID and CMPXCHG8 instructions.
I'd love to know the political back story about why that happened.
I doubt there was any compelling technical reason since XP is basically just a pimped up Windows 2000 with more drivers.
Windows 2000 actually ran shocking fast on the 686 and that with only 64M memory.
I wonder if the box vendors paid off Microsoft to do that to drive a fresh round of hardware sales when people found out XP was "incompatible"

If the poor boy only knew
In '07 I was on an LHD that was off the coast of Somalia, making a half-assed attempt to chase pirates. Except the Captain made sure we stayed outside of 12 miles from the coast. Didn't want to create an international incident by intruding into Somali territorial waters. Needless to say, we didn't kill or catch any pirates.

For straight audio that isn't uber high quality, you should be able to get plenty on a 2 GB unit. Spoken word material can get away with a much higher rate of compression than music and still sound good.
I got by with a 2 GB MP3 player fro several years and I'd typically have at least five audio books on it. Any one of those was far longer than a typical podcast.
For a bit more money you can get a player with more memory. 4 GB units are under $25 now. Better still, for under $40 you can get a model with a microSD card slot that allows you to add a lot more capacity. This also makes it easy to keep stuff separated. For example, load up a 32 GB microSD card (can be found for under $20 these in Class 4, which is fine for audio playback) with all of your music at good quality and reserve the smaller built-in storage for spoken word material like books and podcasts.

African Queen is the best movie of all time I think.
Hubby and I watch it every year on our anniversary since I showed it to him about 10 years ago. Bogie should have won an Oscar for it.
What it teaches hubby and I is that different people can make an excellent team, and also take out the bad guys.

(MANCHESTER, Ill.) — The nephew of a small-town Illinois mayor shot and killed five people, including two boys, before leading police on a chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire that left him dead, authorities said Wednesday.
Illinois State Police said they believe Rick O. Smith, 43, entered a Manchester home through the back door and shot the victims at close range with a shotgun, leaving two women, one man and the boys dead. Two people were found in a bedroom, two in a second bedroom and the man in the hallway. A sixth victim, a 6-year-old girl, was injured and taken to a Springfield hospital.

I think somebody upthread mentioned it already, but "poor" people in America would be the 1% almost anywhere else in the world.
Once in an online debate with a liberal, I asserted that there were no poor people in America, to spluttering rage from said liberal.
I replied that no one who owns a color TV, a microwave, cable, a cell phone, or designer sneakers, is poor, because he obviously has discretionary income (i.e., income that doesn't have to go to food, clothing, and shelter). I then cited Census Bureau statistics that ca. 98% of all American households have, e.g., a color TV, and therefore are not poor by any objective standard. The inference is that no one would buy a color TV if he were going hungry, or lacked clothing or shelter.
The logic seems hermetic to me.

Anti-freeze and batteries were scarce and were routinely stolen if left unattended.

Cyrx was in compatible with a lot of stuff. For instance, you lost halfthe voices on a Sound Blaster AWE64 if you ran on a Cyrix.
By the time of XP there were a bunch of competing extensions to the X86 instructions, such as MMX. CPUID became pretty important if you didn't want your chip to be treated as a generic old Pentium. I remember Microsoft at one point got fed up and laid down the law about all of the variants they were having to deal with, and told the chip makers to get this stuff organized or everybody except Intel would be ignored when it came to extended features.
IBM kind of screwed Cyrix on the 486 clones. IBM did a fab deal with them and got the right to brand their own versions of the chips without paying Cyrix. What madness made Cyrix agree to this I don't know but a lot of businesses would buy a 486 clone based system from IBM but wouldn't touch anything from a lesser brand like Cyrix.
I had one of the pre-release Blue Lightning systems as a Chaos Manor hand me down. It was the first machine I ran Win95 on.

Honestly, I think we should have left by Christmas '01. Come in, kick the Taliban out, hand Karzai (or whoever) the keys and say "don't make us come back over here." Same approach would have worked in Iraq. But we didn't do that, and now we're here, having built up a huge military infrastructure, and we're about to hand it over to the ANSF, who have nowhere near the capability required to run and maintain it.
Just pisses me off that my job is to sit on my ass and watch it happen. I could do that just fine from the States.

I still can't get over this short C-SPAN video, that somebody referenced in a comment earlier today:
http://www.c-spanvideo.org/clip/4443685
To paraphrase:
"Yeah, not only are SOME of my people unhappy - to the point of SUING me for malfeasance, which NEVER happens - but a LOT of my people are unhappy. I say I'm concerned, but I obviously have no plan to do anything about it, whatsoever, except maybe to make examples of the unhappiest."
"Oh, and about those things called "laws" you guys in Congress come up with? I'm glad you guys are keeping yourselves busy with that, but I and my Marxist, anti-American, friends have my OWN ideas about what I need to do with this department, so kiss off, Senator."
You could say it's a bit shocking, and not-so-subtle.

I was down in Logar and Wardak. The previous brigade conducted few operations, which meant that we spent a good chunk of the deployment kicking the enemy out of areas that he had crept back into.
Ultimately commanders aren't going to risk the lives of their soldiers if they don't have support back home. The problem really lies with the Pentagon politicians who are too scared to defend their actions to a hostile Congress.

Sure, there are people who are poorer than others in America. The point is that even those people are not poor by any objective standard. They are not wanting for food - in fact, are likely to be obese - or for clothing or shelter. They may not be able to afford premium cable, or European vacations, but if they're not wanting for food, clothing, or shelter, IMO they're not poor. In contrast to people in some other countries, who really ARE poor.
