I'm back my babies. Let me quell your pain.
Memo to the South: Go Ahead, Secede Already!
A screed by Lee Siegel. But first a little context on Siegel:
Disgraced ex-sock puppeteer Lee Siegel, whose cranky-old-man cultural criticism and woe-is-me whining have led to a fruitful career writing for every single liberal publication you've ever heard of, has landed, like these people do, at The Daily Beast, where he has just coughed up one of the lamest hairballs of a political semi-humor column you will ever read: "Memo to the South: Go Ahead, Secede Already!"
According to Siegel America would be idyllic nay almost utopian if only those icky Southerners could be somehow be gotten rid of.
A solid block of Southern states continues to refuse to expand Medicaid, thus squashing one of the linchpins of the president's health-care reform. The South will likely be the last and most stubborn battleground in the fight for gay marriage. Gun control? The more the two sides seem to get cozier with each other, the faster gun-control legislation gets watered down-and more and more red states are passing laws making it legal to carry a concealed weapon. As for immigration, the red states seem to be relaxing their anti-immigrant fervor, but nothing approaching new legislation is even on the horizon.
...Just think what America would look like without its mostly Southern states. (We could retain "America": they could call themselves "Smith & Wesson" or "Coca-Cola" or something like that.) Universal health care. No guns. Strong unions. A humane minimum wage. A humane immigration policy. High revenues from a fair tax structure. A massive public-works program. Legal gay marriage. A ban on carbon emissions. Electric cars. Stronger workplace protections. Extended family leave from work in case of pregnancy or illness. Longer unemployment benefits. In short, a society on a par with most of the rest of the industrialized world-a place whose politics have finally caught up with its social and economic realities.
So much stupid in such a few lines.
On the left paradise is somehow always just one more purge away. Siegel semi-jokingly advocates for secession but I don't doubt he'd be down just as much with disenfranchisement and internment camps if he actually had the power.
Okay given that this appeared in the amateur webzine I expected it to be a full-on apologia for the marathon bombers. But actually William Saletan makes the case that the Tsaraevs were a family of petty criminals in general and Tamerlan already a violent thug. Then Islam gave him a purpose and a justification for indulging in all his dark impulses.
By now, most of us have heard that the bombers' mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, was arrested last year for shoplifting and destruction of property. This weekend's stories confirm that the charge was a felony, that the quoted value of the merchandise was $1,600, and that the owner of the property was Lord & Taylor, the same company whose security cameras captured the bombers at the marathon.
...Now it turns out that the bombers' father might be a shoplifter, too. Anzor Tsarnaev fixed cars for a living. "Sometimes, when he needed parts, he would show up at Nissenbaum's Auto, a nearby parts and repair shop," the Post reports. "Several times, workers said, Anzor went into the parts yard to find a bracket or screw and emerged offering to pay a small sum for a handful of items. But employees would see his pockets stuffed. Confronted, they say, he admitted picking up a few other meager items."
Tamerlan had a propensity to beat up anyone who upset him and the rest of his siblings were apparently pot dealers as well.
Islam also gave Tamarlan and the rest of the family convenient excuses for their failings. And a reason to strike out against the very country that had given him refugee status and his family over $100,000 in welfare benefits.
The New York Times suggests a different answer: Tamerlan's explanation of why he quit boxing is false. He didn't do it for Islam. He did it because his lack of U.S. citizenship blocked his eligibility to compete in tournaments and build a career in the sport. He just used Islam as an excuse, a story to tell others.
That would explain why, in January of this year, Tamerlan was rebuking a speaker at his local mosque who praised Martin Luther King Jr. The Post says that according to an official at the mosque, Tamerlan "yelled that King represented American values." Tamerlan's worldview wasn't about nonviolence. It was about anti-Americanism. Three months later, he detonated.
Bruce Holbert's Gun Accident in the New York Times
His account sure seems bogus if not a little suspicious. But because he was idiot with a loaded gun (as was his friend/victim) therefore guns are bad, bad, bad and must be restricted.
I never had much interest in guns. Yet it is I who killed a man.It was the second week in August, a Friday the 13th, in fact, in 1982. I was with a group of college roommates who were getting ready to go to the Omak Stampede and Suicide Race. Three of us piled into a red Vega parked outside a friend's house in Okanogan, Wash., me in the back seat. The driver, who worked with the county sheriff's department, offered me his service revolver to examine. I turned the weapon onto its side, pointed it toward the door. The barrel, however, slipped when I shifted my grip to pull the hammer back, to make certain the chamber was empty, and turned the gun toward the driver's seat. When I let the hammer fall, the cylinder must have rotated without my knowing. When I pulled the hammer back a second time it fired a live round.
My friend, Doug, slumped in the driver's seat, dying, and another friend, who was sitting in the passenger seat, raced into the house for the phone.
...My friend was killed by a man who misunderstood guns, who imagined that comfort with - and affection for - guns was a vital component of manhood. I did not recognize a gun for what it was: a machine constructed for a purpose, one in which I had no real interest.
Yes guns can be deadly. And they're deadlier when you're stupid.
Also see if you can spot all the flaws in Holbert's story.
George Jones and Clarence Thomas
An interviewer in 2010 saw this letter from Clarence Thomas framed on Jones' wall.
You can hear "The Right Left Hand" here.
This is a striking statistic I recently ran across in preparing to teach the post-war period for my A.P. European History class: there are more people in Britain today working for in Indian restaurants than in the coal, steel, and railroad industries combined. On one hand, that is not so surprising considering the state of those industries in today's Britain. However, in the grand scope of British history, I found that statistic truly startling.
And things were worse at the beginning of the 19th century:
In 1816, the net public debt of the UK reached 240 per cent of gross domestic product. This was the fiscal legacy of 125 years of war against France. What economic disaster followed this crushing burden of debt? The industrial revolution.
...Between 1815 and 1855, for example, debt interest accounted for close to half of all UK public spending.
The Great Literature of Pancake Making
It always worthwhile to study the classics.

Both admirals were old friends. In the 1920's Halsey commanded a destroyer flotilla and Spruance was one of the destroyer commanders in that flotilla.* They got along very well - and no surprise Halsey recommended that Spruance take over for Midway when Halsey returned from the Tokyo Raid ill. They were very different men with very different styles; both were complete professionals.
*Halsey's flotilla was known for being well-drilled - in a fleet exercise they dropped smoke, went back into the smoke screen, came out, turned, dropped torpedoes on the 'enemy' battle-line, then went back into the smoke screen. The dud torpedoes went home and caused some damage to the battleships just by striking them. My source for the story is 'The Quiet Warrior', a biography of Raymond Spruance.

Oh, and once we get rid of the southern states, then of course we will have to get rid of the western states, and probably Alaska as well, and then there's the issue of the U.P. and northern Minnesota, and on and on and on. Liberals always think they are in the majority no matter where they are, and the southern mind (much like the Alaskan mind) remains a complete mystery to them, so they assume southerners and Alaskans (and probably Montanans and the like) are a bunch of knuckle-dragging imbeciles. Of course, we are the ones with the guns, so it probably isn't too wise to piss us off, but what's a liberal to do if they can't be pissing someone off.
Liberalism and Islam are both mental diseases.

What planet is this guy from again?
Most of the rest of the industrialized world have politics which, _contra_ being "caught up", instead are panting and out of breath and running desperately behind the social and economic realities. The politics fall further behind with every step as the realities steadily accelerate away.
Look at Europe. The Eurosocialist model is imploding and collapsing. The single currency model has brought incredible misery to half the eurozone. Europe's own intrinsic ethnic schisms are deepening, and worse yet, they've imported violent and nonassimilating Islam in large quantities. The place is a disaster across the board.
Yet the politics of Europe continue to be about trying energetically to resuscitate the decaying corpse, dress it in formalwear and make it dance. As far from the "social and economic realities" as anyone could ever imagine.

No, that's not quite it.
The deal with Islamics in western welfare state countries is that they are often specifically encouraged at the mosque to work the rules as aggressively as possible, and claim every penny in benefits they can get.
They are especially told to have lots and lots of little Muslim kids, whose keep will be paid for by the infidels. As in fact Speedbump's wife and kid were pulling AFDC benefits.
Islamics call this gaming of the system _jizya_, after the obligatory tax which is levied on non-Muslims in Muslim countries.
But wait. This isn't a Muslim country!
NOT YET. But the fact that they use that particular phrase should clue you in to the fact that they intend to make it into one over the long haul. That's what the idea of having plenty of kids at the expense of the _kuffar_ via welfare benefits is all about. Demographic warfare. And in Europe, the local imams are scarily specific and direct in calling it just that.

How you judge the start of a battle is interesting. Trafalgar did not last long (for example) but the there was the build-up as the fleets scouted for each other across the Atlantic, and that was weeks if not months. Coral Sea was brief for the direct carrier actions (aircrews were lost, and survivors tired; and aircraft were damaged) were very brief with only a couple of days for that before they had to pull back and rest/repair/re-equip/ and so forth.

I think many of us have obnoxious "dealing with this treacherous body" stories. For me, it's my neck. I sure as hell didn't design those bones, and I sure as hell didn't misalign them, so that once or twice a week I have headaches that send me to hugging the commode and hoping for quick amputation.
Now the stupid bastards that run the insurance company say I need to do a medial nerve block before I can get my radiofrequency denervation, even though it is clear (after about a dozen years) that the RFD is the only thing that works. So, another couple of months before I can get relief, thank you Obamacare and the horse you rode in on.

At least NYC has half a leg to stand on when portrayed as the Center of the Universe. I don't know how the rest of you guys deal with Toronto being portrayed as NYC but better
Although, all of those reporters who do so have probably never been in any part of The Bronx except for a direct limo ride to the $900 seats at the House That Greed Built.

And there is 'Thunder Below' (IIGTR) by Eugene Fluckey - the USS Barb - the sub that landed a group to mine a railroad on Hokkaido because they were there, saw the RR line and thought 'why not'?

We also had 8 cars burn in the airport parking garage here today. Before the fire was even out, before an arson investigator could get anywhere near it they were saying "total accident, not arson, not terrorism" and then they said that they think it has something to do with a BMW leaking fuel which ran under other cars and ignited. All spontaneous and such.
I love how arson investigators don't even need to get near crime scenes anymore in order to determine if the fire was arson or an accident.

Dude, you banged Linda Ronstadt in your prime, no need to go to these lengths to look like someone worthy of praise.

If you're in NY, I advise you to buy ammo and weapons before next year, when you will be required to give name and address before any ammo purchase. The seller will run a background check BEFORE you get ammo, and if NICS is busy, you get to wait until the check is made.
Rumor has it that there is more legislation in the pipeline, but I can't verify this, my sources are silent.

A little late to the thread, as always.
Things that shouldn't have happened:
1. Sheriff's dept. guy letting Holbert handle his revolver.
1a. Handing Holbert a loaded revolver.
2. Holbert pulling back the hammer to make sure the chamber was empty. I think the approved way to safety check a DA or DA/SA revolver would be to rotate the cylinder out. He did the equivalent of racking slide on a semi-auto, with the mag in.
3. Holbert: "When I let the hammer fall, the cylinder must have rotated without my knowing" Using a gun with out knowing how it works is a clear fail. Not sure how he let the hammer fall, he doesn't say.
4. Holbert: "When I pulled the hammer back a second time it fired a live round." No it didn't. He fired the gun.
5. Pointing a gun at something, (the back of the driver's seat), you don't want to shoot is fail in the extreme.
6. Lastly if you have no interest in guns, or knowledge, or experience with them, don't play with them.
Hopefully the guy did a stretch for involuntary manslaughter, or whatever it's called. I've never owned, fired or handled a gun, but even I wouldn't have done any of the crap this idiot did, especially in a Vega with 2 other people.

It's at a fourth-grade reading level and appropriate for all ages. It's a "kid's book" but it won't insult their intelligence. In fact, I incorporated a few facts into the book. I also used some foreshadowing and lamp shading because it is a bit of a silly story.
I invite you all to purchase it and review, or ask me about it. Also there's a free sample available.

It was the second week in August, a Friday the 13th, in fact, in 1982.
"...I was at summer daycamp with my bestest kindergarten buddy Tommy. I was chewing my Pop Tart aimlessley, as small children are wont to do. It must have been a subconscious gun fetish, because the next thing I knew, the Pop Tart was shaped like an AK-72 semi-assault full automatic machine pistol. Tommy laughed and pointed his index finger at me, with his thumb straight up. 'Ka-pow' he giggled. I instinctively raised my Pop Tart, and without realizing it racked the cylinder and a shell ejected from the clip into the magazine and before I knew it, the Pop Tart gun fired itself. When I opened my eyes, my imaginary friend Biff lay in an imaginary pool of imaginary blood. Looking up at me with his imaginary blue eyes he moaned, 'Why, oh why did you have to believe that Pop Tarts were a crucial part of manhood'. My life has been a hell on earth ever since that fateful day."

America would look A LOT more racist and hate crimey if the south were taken out of the national figures.
According to the FBI latest hate crimes data, all those "enlightened" liberal northern states are hate crime'n at a 2X-3X greater rate than the southern states.
This jaggoff is stuck in a time warp to 60 years ago. The south largely got over that shit and has moved on, the north never did.

We have a rule in this household.
Younger family members must clean plates of what they take. Younger family members must eat every bite of their impulse purchases, no matter how weird or ill-considered. The only out is if the food is demonstrably unfit for consumption.
After a few iterations, this has remarkable results.

Fuck them. I WANT the South to secede. Maybe some remnant of America can survive that way.
Back before PJ Media banned me, they had a review of Memphis Blue. The reviewer was codswalloped that there was so much civility in the dialogue, no hint of racism or condescension. Everybody treated each other as equals.
I replied that the South has been like that for quite a while and this was pretty much SOP for us.

I'd love to see those electric semis have to stop every 100 miles to recharge. Also, the ironic thing is that it's actually more energy efficient to cool your home than to heat it. I guarantee that the average Southerner has a smaller "carbon footprint" than the average Northerner.

Yup. Hot air rises. So you're heating your space from the top, benefitting no one, down to the bottom where everyone is. When you cool, it's from the floor up. Muuuuch easier.

True, but not just that. Air conditioning is just more efficient than heat. We could all save energy by moving South. Although, as an Ohioan, I won't reveal that secret to the rest of us Northerners.

Double action revolvers commonly used by the police in 1982 have a cylinder release on the left side. You pull it back if Smith and Wesson or push it forward for a Colt. Rugers have a rocker and you rock the cylinder release back to open the cylinder. Second, looking at the cylinder from the side, you can see the cartridge heads--by 1982 very few revolvers still had the recessed heads. Even if you pulled the hammer back, the firing pin hole is much too small to see whether a cartridge is present without a very strong flashlight. Others which use transfer bar safeties--at the time would be Colt Pythons and Rugers Six series totally block any visibility of the cylinder.
It is possible that it was a single action of some sort without the transfer safety bar--Colt S/A or old style Ruger S/A. I am not a specialist on these but usually it requires putting the revolver on half cock, opening the loading gate, and rotating the cylinder. This would tell you whether cartridges are present. However, you would never let the hammer fall from half cock (it is a primitive safety of a sort) and then cock the hammer again. This will always cause the next cylinder (loaded or not) to come up unless the revolver is defective (if on half cock, one can spin the cylinder manually so that you may load new cartridges and get rid of spent ones).
Old style single actions are designed to be carried on an empty chamber so a six shooter really carries five loaded and one unloaded. Ruger redesigned their single action in the 1970's and added a transfer bar safety so that six rounds may be carried safely.
So, Holbrook's actions were with a careless disregard of human life and were not justified whether the revolver was single action or double.

I personally think people over-do it on the cardio. Or they under-do it.
If you do cardio, remember: the idea is to elevate your heart rate, not 'sweat' away your fat. It doesn't work. Give your heart muslcle a little workout by making a beat moderately fast for several minutes.
If you have a Planet Fitness in your area, join it. It's cheap and has everything you need.

to them, they view the wealth of the rich as being stolen and illegitimately obtained, so therefore, government must act like Robin Hood and redistribute it, and therefore return the wealth to the people, in the form of 'free' health care, which automatically should belong to the people anyway since they would have purchased their own health care had not the evil rich stolen everyone's money.

As part of not feeding the beast, I made the conscious decision to do without A/C for about 4 years now.
My power bills are under $50/mo winter or summer. $45'ish in the winter running a small space heater, $35'ish in the summer running fans.
The first summer was a little rough, but I've got the system figured out now about where fans need to go, what windows need to be open and such for the casa to be tolerable.
The key thing I determined experimentally, is to restrict caloric intake to only what's absolutely needed in the summer. Any excess makes you feel a LOT hotter. A modest deficit during the hottest hours of the day allows even 86 degrees to be tolerable.
When it goes up over 88, you're fucked. That's gonna fell hot no matter how you slice it.
When I think of the thousands and thousands of dollars I gave FPL over the years paying $250/mo power bills it makes me nauseous.

don't think about it, just do it. that is what I had to do.
I would think and fret and worry and agonize and read and ponder and do all sorts of things to plan out an exercise routine. I got to the point where I was just so confused about everything.
so one day I just went to the gym and said "oh fuck it, I am just going to do the elliptical, how hard could it be". and it isn't hard, and it didn't kill me.
if doc said "don't overdo it", then just put the setting on resistance 1 (lightest resistance) and try it. I guarantee you won't pass out on that setting. if you are healthy enough to walk to the elliptical, then you are capable of doing resistance level 1.
but just do something. not too much reading.

I have an extremely uncommon name. My search produced not a single listing for a person who I didn't immediately recognize as a close relative. (Even my mother's maiden name is very uncommon, although if you reverse the syllables it becomes common as dirt.) My friend, Alex Pournelle did a search on his family's name and got a longer list than me but nearly all of them known to him.
The one mystery listing was for a person in Florida by the name of, I'm not kidding, Crackerneck Pournelle. Alex's father was also at a loss to say who this person could be.

I really miss WinHEC. That was geek heaven in terms of seeing all of the tech that was going to be standard in PCs within a few years. For instance, the first public demo of SATA was at a WinHEC.

I would normally say that this is a tragic event and no blame should be placed upon any of our loyal intelligence agents for failing to connect 5 dots out of 1000.
But since we've apparently taken a PDB from 8/6/01 as smoking gun proof that Bush should've stopped 9/11, then this proof that Obama fucked up and people died because of him being a massive fuck up

Good evening all. So I see Drudge has this tonight:
"UK DAILY MAIL: Saudi Arabia warned USA IN WRITING about Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2012, and rejected his application for an entry visa to visit Mecca in 2011... Developing..."
This admin was warned by TWO foreign governments that Tamerlan needed an eye kept on him and they were ignored. The left lost their minds over a vague August 2001 memo about planes being flown into buildings even though there were no specifics whatsoever. Here, we have a name (Taerlan), we have a location (MA), and O gets away with botching this. If this were W, the left would be claiming that he ignored this on puropse for some nefarious reason.
In other news, I enjoyed watching Rep. Trey Gowdy on Greta tonight. He said Benghazi is "heating up". Praise God! I'm so glad he's "teasing" the upcoming hearings on May 8th. It's good to create "buzz" about it to get people curious and tuning in. I also liked how he scoffed at the investigation the admin claims to have done comparing it to a student grading his own paper. Love him.

Miss Tamy al-Thor, and most others on the ONT, are right as usual. The battle is not N v S. It's rural v urban.
Before moving seven years ago, we lived in the Owens Valley. There was a local Democrat Club. The only member was my barber. He had the good grace to speak only of fishing.
Favorite pub songs were Up Against the Wall, Red Neck Mother and Prop Me Up By The Juke Box When I Die.
Don't get me wrong. There were some higher priced classy joints. But they were reserved for the tourists.

Jack Fletcher was in overall command. But TF16 and TF17 operated independently. This became more pronounced because TF17 had to wait and recover her scout bombers that morning. That is one of the things the pilots in combat had to face, their carriers operating under radio silence so had to hope their carrier would be in the spot of ocean they were promised it would be when they launched. If not and the pilots could not find their carrier by searching, a ditching followed by a swim while praying for a PBY to rescue them would follow. IIRC there was a bomber crew, either Lexington or Yorktown, before Coral Sea that ditched and was in a raft for almost 30 days.
The reason for the scout bombers was Jake Fletcher not wanting to be stung again like he did at Coral Sea. An incomplete contact report from a Dauntless caused Sherman and him to throw two complete air wings at the Japanese light carrier Shoho. Shoho went down but while that was happening the second string air wings of Shokaku and Zuikaku struck the Americans. Despite the best efforts of Wildcats as top CAP and Dauntless dive bombers acting as a low level anti-torpedo bomber screen, both carriers were hit. And later Lexington was lost. Hence on that morning Fletcher sent out scout bombers since he did not fully trust the contact reports they had been getting from Midway.
And that separation probably saved Enterprise and Hornet was this dispersion. The Japanese seemed to have TF17 on their GPS that day as Hiryu flung progressively weaker attacks at the Americans. At one point Hornet F4Fs on CAP tried to help Yorktown's beleaguered CAP.

There were two legitimate reasons for the GWB administration to be concerned at the time:
1. The G8 Summit in Genoa, Italy, was almost interrupted by some Islamic nut trying to fly a plane into the summit.
2. Most of the 9/11 conspiracies originate from the fact that the military was doing its wargames exercises at the time of the attacks, and The Left has managed to conflate two parts of the wargames into one excuse: 1) Arab terrorists hijack the plane to gain some objective; 2) Cuban terrorists fly the planes into skyscrapers
With that said, 9/11 probably would've been prevented if the FBI had talked to the CIA. Thanks a lot, Jamie Gorelick.
In my opinion, Boston couldn't have been prevented (either Jahar or Tamerlan's wife would've gone through with it even if we had gotten Tamerlan for his douchbaggery), and I don't blame the Obama Administration for it.
But if we're blaming the Bush Administration for 9/11, then turnabout is fair play

When does Congress' investigation into this begin? And how will they schedule time for it between their investigation into Benghazi? Not to mention dealing with the crap bills the GOP keeps coming up with (i.e. amnesty).

RE: Getting Healthy,
I'm in the same boat after gaining weight for the past couple of years (a deployment and then unemployment after I got out of the Army doesn't help my waistline). A couple of things:
Focus on capabilities. Set goals to run a certain distance, then run it in a certain time. Make a goal to lift a certain amount of weight. Don't focus just on losing weight, which can fluctuate day to day and week to week based on a lot of different factors.
Find something active that interests you. I'm a big fan of Argentine Tango because it keeps me active and gives me a decent social circle. I have a friend who is very big into mountain biking. It's a lot easier to pull yourself off the couch and go dancing or hiking or anything else but go to the gym. And if you have an activity that you can focus your attention on, you'll gain some focus at the gym.

Two yellow eyes glared down from above. "My precious Fluffy," his client had said, "my dearest little angel is trapped and needs your help." What she had failed to mention was that her angel was an Avatar of Hate, eyes burning with malice at all in sight.
As she continued her natter behind him, he wondered if this was Fluffy's attempt to escape a tortured existence. For the briefest of moments, he felt a pang of sympathy for the feline - but a job was a job, and a wizard needed to pay his bills the same as anyone else.
Richard combed his mind for an appropriate chant, and settled upon a Litany of Protection to the Dark and Terrible Lady. A well known prayer half a world away, few knew the language here, so the arcane sounding words would project wizardly mystique. And, he thought, perhaps it would please Her Grace to shield him from Fluffy's wrath.

"You have to be right all the time. They only have to make you wrong once."
There have been two problems in the interim:
1. The Left has discounted every real and very legitimate threat on our soil between 2001-2008, including the very real attempt to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge in 2003-2004.
2. They'll do anything to protect Obama, so Boston will be ignored, just as Hassan, Times Square Paki, and Benghazi were ignored (to be fair, DC Sniper, which to me was jihad, was not blamed on Bush, and neither were the anthrax attacks)

I've come to realize the big mistake Nintendo made in their Wii U strategy. Everything else was fixable but make the GamePad part of the base system was a huge mistake.
A lot of the appeal of the Wii early on was the combination of novelty and low price. The Wii, including bundled mini-games, was only $250 while the Xbox 360 and PS3 were a lot more. (Unless you count the semi-crippled Xbox 360 Arcade model with no hard drive.) This time around the Wii U is about the same price as the competing machines with very mature libraries and system software, as well as far superior back-end services.
Nintendo could have avoided this by making the GamePad optional and having the base 32 GB Wii U include a Wiimote, nunchuk, and low cost standard controller that plugged into the Wiimote for its wireless connection. (A module that added a rechargeable battery and RF transmitter to the controller to make it a standalone unit could be an optional accessory.) Considering that the GamePad sells for the equivalent of over $150 in Japan, It's safe to assume Nintendo could have offered my proposed package for $200 with losing money per unit.
A beefed up HD-capable Wii for $200 should have been an easy sell, and the GamePad option would add uniqueness without being an albatross around the platform's neck. (This would have been even more enticing if they had done the same as Microsoft when running original Xbox games on the 360 and upscaled Wii games to HD resolution.) Thus far, the GamePad has been little more than a gimmick for single player use. It just isn't that useful if it means taking your eyes off the TV. As Zero Punction pointed out, the same thing as ZombieU's scanner could just as easily be done with a translucent overlay making you constantly veer your gaze away from the menu to lookout for approaching threats.
Where the GamePad really shows potential is in asymmetric multi-player, where the GamePad user takes on a dungeon master role or has a separate POV because his task differs form the other players, who may or may not cooperate against him. As such, if they got the GamePad down to around $100, it should be no harder to sell than additional Wiimotes. There wouldn't be a 1:1 ratio of GamePads to Wii Us but there would be a hell of a lot more Wii Us getting into homes.

Main missteps IMO is the lack of games (how they didn't know that they needed bigger staffs to make HD assets is laughable), power to price ratio is perplexing but I really the way they advertised it and the name was it's biggest downfall. Majority of the advertising said upgrade and included a pic of the gamepad when it was launched. Throw in a name that doesn't give a clear distinction of a separation between the two and it's almost a perfect storm. They're not on the level of Apple to get away with something like that

R is for...
...?
Right picture (Tamarlan is [L]eft). Though my first impression was that they somehow botched her party ID.
On the Wii U, I am amazed at how many people don't get the concept of 'next gen.' I had lunch with a friend whose son wanted it for Christmas and he didn't think the addons to their old system were worth the price.
I guess that's what happens when you target casual gamers at the expense of everyone else.

They've had far worse launches. When the SNES came out it had Super Mario World in the box and Pilot Wings was also available. That was IT for over a month. Then there was a trickle of third party games but most of them were gimmick crap like HyperZone. Gradius III and Super Castlevania (IV) were the first serious titles outside of the bundled Mario game.
The N64 was as bad but Mario 64 kept people content for a good while and Wave Race, the only other title at launch, helped a little. From there it was a looong wait until title came out at a decent pace.
The Gamecube launched with no must have game. Luigi's Mansion was good but not great. The best game at launch was from a third party, Sega's Monkey Ball. And even that wasn't the sort of thing to commit to a new system over.
If anything, the Wii U has about the best Nintendo console launch lineup since the US NES. And the NES had the advantage of being a three year old system in Japan when it hit the US market. (In Japan the big title at launch was the original arcade Mario Bros. game, rather than the huge hit Super Mario Bros. we had from our launch.) In terms of the number of titles and their variety, the Wii U had little to complain about. That releases stalled almost immediately is another issue though. But six months after launch, most of the previous Nintendo systems had smaller libraries in the stores. They also lacked backward compatibility and an online retail venue for games too small to merit a disc release.
If I could have gotten the Wii U without the GamePad for $200, I'd be far happier with my purchase. It would only be a minorly greater expense than getting the Wii while still gaining access to its library and the new software should more than qualify that additional expense. Over time, there might even be enough good software to justify plunking down for the GamePad. (Doubtful as I so rarely have any guests who are gamers.)
As it stands, it feels like Nintendo conned me into buying something that doesn't meet its promise. A significantly lower cost of entry would have fixed that and made it much more of an impulse buy for a lot of consumer, like the Wii.

Done right, with a hand off to private enterprise, space development should be a big money maker. But it needs the kind of committed investment private enterprise won't take on without more assurance of a obtainable profit.
Once a government program proves asteroid mining is doable, there is no shortage of billionaires who'll jump in. Or an orbital tower. Taxpayer funding need only demonstrate feasibility. Given that, business will build the real thing.
Posted by: epobirs at April 30, 2013 10:04 PM (kcfmt)
epobirs,
I believe there are already companies building on the idea of "tourists in space", and I believe that it will quickly follow that asteroid mining is not that far behind.
Where there are ideas that are profitable, I think the government just needs to get the heck out of the way.

"My good friend Steve Goodman wrote that song, and he said he'd written the *perfect* country and western song. I wrote him back..." Little known fact - Steve Goodman also wrote the song "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request", which the team hated. As revenge, he wrote a peppy and intentionally crappy pop song called "Go Cubs Go" which won a Tribune contest and subsequently was played at games - they still play it after every win. Somewhere in heaven, Steve Goodman is laughing.

Those companies are only happening after decades of government spending on demonstrating feasibility.
Business will accept one unknown but not two.
You can have either 1. Is it doable? or 2. Is there money in it?
You can't have both. The majority of people with capital to throw around will not accept that level of risk. I'm a pretty libertarian type but there are endeavors where government can take on a role that private industry won't. The first trick is to do it in a form that ties in to stuff the government is actually obligated to do. For example, getting good at putting satellites in orbit enabled us to build the GPS system, which had huge benefits for the military. Given cheap launch systems, private enterprise would happily take over maintaining and improving the GPS system but only because the means of creating it and its value are both proven things.
The second trick is getting government to step aside when the time comes. NASA was created with a horrible defect: Johnson sold it to the Southern states by packaging it as Civil War reparations. A shitload of money and jobs would would come into the South, where at the time there were plenty of people who'd heard from their parents and grandparents what things were like after the War and carry on the resentment.
After Apollo ended (which rationally should have come AFTER a well developed infrastructure for getting to orbit had been created) there wasn't much reason for the agency to continue with more than a fraction of its staff until a genuinely useful new mission was found. Developing a real spaceplane as a series of X Programs in conjunction with aerospace companies wouldn't require nearly as many personnel directly on the federal payroll. But NASA at that point didn't exist to encourage development of space technologies. It existed to employ a horde of people in Southern states.
Thus we are still paying the price for doing things backward today. Apollo was a fantastic accomplishment but it derailed what would have been the proper course of developing our ability to do things in orbit and beyond.
Business won't do it if they think the risk is too great. But they also won't do it if they have to compete with a federal monopoly.

OH yeah, BignJames. That's another guy I am really happy I have seen in concert.
Only problem was, it was on a Blues Cruise, and I guess ole Commander Cody didn't think it was bluesy enough for the cruise.
Luckily, I had seen him previously perform that song, and I have it on and LP from the day.

epobirs,
The thing with the space exploration, is it has already gone to the guys who WILL commercialize it.
I live in NM, and we have a "spaceport" built.
I am sure it is not large enough just yet, but Mr. Richard Branson himself already has been here, and launched a ship from it.
He landed at HOFB, I think (I did not keep up with every single detail, but I think he is getting close to the "tourist" part of it, which is his thing just now), but IT is coming, the profitabilty part.
I just hope I can hang in here long enough, and win the lottery for either myself, or my nephew, who is BIG into space, to make a trip without the government being involved.

You aren't telling me anything I don't know. I was at Mojave Air Field, the first FAA licensed space port in the nation, when Spaceship One was launched for the first time. I was hanging out with my friends at XCOR, who are longtime veterans of the effort to make aerospace a civilian activity.
Heck, I was at White Sands in 1996 to see the DC-X do what Larry Niven called the Death Swoop but the Air Force preferred to call the Orbital Reentry Maneuver. The SDI program was conceived in Larry Niven's living room during an assemblage of SF writers, scientists, and aerospace folks (some had credentials in all three fields) that was put together to produce policy papers seeking to encourage government investment in infrastructure to get things to the point where business would find a self-sustaining role of its own beyond fulfilling DoD and NASA contracts. When that group met a second time in the 90s, I was there as an assistant.
Yes, stuff is happening but we're still a long ways from any of it becoming a real self-sustaining business. And it could all fall apart. It has happened before. More than once. Things are more hopeful this time around but I'm not inclined to overconfidence. If the government is going to spend itself blind, I'd rather do so establishing a functional access to orbit infrastructure than by keeping people on the dole and propping up unions. If taxpayer dollars must wasted, I'd rather they be wasted on something might be a genuine investment rather than tossed down the gullets of the LIV masses.

They know the price is too high but it's too late to make the GamePad optional. So we'll probably see the entry level go down to $250 by the holiday season.

This is a great moron song, all about family, albeit a dysfunctional one what tells John Law to stuff it. Highly recommended.

epobirs,
I agree with what you are saying, but I am at the point I don't want the Feds involved at ALL.
I think if we let the government, especially at the Federal level, be too involved, then we will have lost the American dream of being into space.
I think the Spaceport, in New Mexico with this governor we have, will see a lot of progress.
At least I hope so. And I very much plan on helping her or her successor keep that going.
The NM government has pretty much stayed out of the way, from what I hear.

And, to bed, perchance to dream -
Of big ole pickup trucks and loving my Mom and etc. etc.
Thank y'all - for being here when I need to feel normal.
And my hubby used to perform a nice version of Willy Nelson - Pick up the Tempo, except the drummer used to always think he had to play faster, so instead of a waltz, so it would almost sound like head-banging music.
Oh the days of being a roadie for hubby in the bars.
What fun!
Good-night all my moron friends!

It would be a given if the Basic goes down fifty bucks to expect the same of the Deluxe. Though it might have been a better idea to have no built-in user data storage at all and leave it to the consumer to decide how much to buy. Or just have a minimal SD card of a few gigs and dual SD card slots. This is simpler than having the user storage mounted directly to the board and makes it easier to shift gears and offer differing amounts as prices go down. Far easier to just put a higher capacity SD card in the machine than change the manufacturing of the board itself. The inclusion of a 4 GB card with the 3DS XL where the 3DS came with a 2 GB card is a good example.
This also means purchases must be tied to accounts and not specific hardware units. Making it a hassle to switch up to a higher capacity card only serves to limit eShop sales.
What I'd really like to have seen was an eSATA port behind a cover on the back of the unit. Allow a serious amount of storage to be added via an enclosure that goes under the main unit and connects to the eSATA, along with some attach points to prevent damage if the main unit is picked up and
the drive enclosure doesn't follow. Preferably, the unit could have been purchased with a drive installed or empty to be filled with any standard 9mm 2.5" drive, like the PS3. After a custom encrypted format is applied you have some real storage of the level needed by a company serious about selling downloads of the entire library. (As it stands, Lego Undercover is too big to put even on the Deluxe model after you subtract the space consumed by the firmware.)
This would at least mean that Nintendo was getting serious about digital sales and ready to play with the big boys. But no, the only real options for serious storage is USB 2.0 hard drives, which are too slow to make a good alternative to loading from disc.
But Nintendo is still getting the hang of 2005 while the other console makers are getting ready to up the ante in 2013.

Won't have to imagine it, we already have it - it's called California. And yeah, it's "working" about as well as any rational, thinking person (aka, non-leftists) would expect.

I'll take that a step further and say that I'd like to see the country break into a few different regions/nations. Hell, i'd be downright excited if it happened. I have absolutely nothing in common politically and little cuturally with "deep blue" voters. I'm not a socialist, i'm not gleeful over killing babies, I LOVE GUNS, and believe social welfare (see: handout) programs should barely exist. We could make/enforce our own immigration policy, lower taxes, ease regulation, or in short - re-establish the America the founders intended by casting off the dead weight blue voters and their freeloading, low-info voting tendencies. Let them have their oppressive taxes, dead baby fetishes, "multicultural" (see: anti-white) paradise, burdensome regulations, and union thugs. Hell, we'd gladly send them those that sympathize with their cause. You want multiculturalism? Hey, here's a few million illegals. Have fun! Eventually, after we followed the "Texas model," we'd end up poaching all their jobs, while they whined, complained, and demonized any company that makes a profit. Most of their "paradises" are crime-addles urban hellholes now, with their constituents destroying entire parts of every medium and large city in this country. Wanna see the end result of total "blue governance" - look at Detroit, Chicago, or California. All toilets.
I say, bring it on.

Yesterday, I did something that made me feel good. I ordered an unlocked cellphone and some tools and I used Ace's Amazon link. I hope the Head Ewok gets his cut.
I would really encourage everybody to use his Amazon link when you order. Its a great way to show support for what Ace does and the commenting environment he has created.
I didn't know anything about this Amazon connection. I learned about it from Althouse's blog. Everyday she has a post about what people bought through her Amazon link. Maybe the Cobloggers could randomly post some stuff people bought (it can even be funny "look what this moron bought!"). That would educate the commenters and help us to remember to use his Amazon link.
