Princeton Grad: Ladies You Better Find Your Husbands in College
From a letter by Susan A. Patton, Princeton grad of '77, in the Daily Princetonian:
For most of you, the cornerstone of your future and happiness will be inextricably linked to the man you marry, and you will never again have this concentration of men who are worthy of you.
Here's what nobody is telling you: Find a husband on campus before you graduate. Yes, I went there....My younger son is a junior and the universe of women he can marry is limitless. Men regularly marry women who are younger, less intelligent, less educated. It's amazing how forgiving men can be about a woman's lack of erudition, if she is exceptionally pretty. Smart women can't (shouldn't) marry men who aren't at least their intellectual equal. As Princeton women, we have almost priced ourselves out of the market. Simply put, there is a very limited population of men who are as smart or smarter than we are. And I say again--you will never again be surrounded by this concentration of men who are worthy of you.
Of course, once you graduate, you will meet men who are your intellectual equal - just not that many of them. And, you could choose to marry a man who has other things to recommend him besides a soaring intellect. But ultimately, it will frustrate you to be with a man who just isn't as smart as you.
Here is another truth that you know, but nobody is talking about. As freshman women, you have four classes of men to choose from. Every year, you lose the men in the senior class, and you become older than the class of incoming freshman men. So, by the time you are a senior, you basically have only the men in your own class to choose from, and frankly, they now have four classes of women to choose from. Maybe you should have been a little nicer to these guys when you were freshmen?
<Sam Kinnison voice> Is she right?
Well there are seasons to our lives - particularly so for women. And as of yet no amount of technology or academic theorizing or outraged blog posting can alter this basic fact.
Is this fair for women? Nope - not at all. But then sometimes Mother Nature is just a flat-out sexist bitch.
So given the reality of men and women and biology Patton's advice is about 100x more likely to result in overall happier lives for Princeton female graduates than anything they'd ever learn in a Women's Studies class. It's certainly not the only path to satisfaction (after all Jacqueline Mackie Paisley Passey did eventually find a Mr. Passey) nor is it a guarantee - but on the other hand why play Life on difficulty setting Challenging if you don't have to. The prizes are going to be the same either way.
James Taranto has thoughts here. Plus more from Bookworm, Instapundit, and WRM.
Why Are Action Stars More Likely to Be Republican?
Thanks to benK.
Fighting ability, largely determined by upper body strength, continues to rule the minds of modern men, according to a new study by Aaron Sell from Griffith University in Australia and colleagues. Their work explores the concept that human males are designed for fighting, and shows how this fighting ability drives both their behavior and attitudes to a range issues, including political orientation. For example, their research demonstrates that among Hollywood actors, those selected for their physical strength, i.e. action stars, are more likely to support the Republican position on foreign policy.
...The authors conclude: "Upper body strength in adult males is a crucial variable that appears to have impacts on a wide range of mental mechanisms. These mechanisms were designed by natural selection at a time when personal physical aggression was far more common and individual differences in fighting ability were far more relevant for the resolution of conflicts.
Strengthen your body and your mind will follow.
Stupidity's in the Water: Florida DJs Suspended for 'Dihydrogen Monoxide' April Fools' Joke
What two radio hosts in Florida thought was a harmless April Fools joke got them temporarily suspended from their long-time post.
The joke made by morning show hosts for Gator Country 101.9, Val St. John and Scott Fish, was about "dihydrogen monoxide," and it led some in the area to begin expressing concern over the local water quality....The Bonita Springs News-Press reported radio management saying the joke stepped over the line when it caused public concern.
"It is one thing when radio stations change their format or other crazy things they do," the general manager for the country music station, Tony Renda, told the News-Press. "But you are messing with one of the big three, food, water or shelter. They just went too far; I just knew I didn't like that."
The Lee County public utility began receiving calls from residents wondering if dihydrogen monoxide coming out of their faucet was safe to drink and use.
"My understanding is it is a felony to call in a false water quality issue," Diane Holm, a public information officer with Florida Department of Health in Lee County, said, according to the News-Press.
Well the water supply is full of dihydrogen monoxide and kills hundreds of people a year. Clearly we must pass laws outlawing it. For the children.
Flipper Was a Horn Dog i.e. a Typical Dolphin Bastard
As for the fabled orgy, it turns out that dolphins are one of the most promiscuous animals on the planet. They don't mate just for reproduction. They enjoy sex. It's a social binder for them, like a handshake. On a good day a dolphin can have sex 50 times. Dolphins do it with everyone . . . old, young, big, small, even family members. Homosexual behavior is common, as is masturbation; dolphins have even been known to make advances at human beings. The dark side of the dolphin-the turd in the superpod-is that sometimes dolphin sex can be violent and nonconsensual. Rape and gang rape happens. We did not see any of that, though. This seemed to be a law-abiding lot.
Always beware of a dolphin 'handshake'.
And here's the parody of the Star Spangled Banner.
Stretching Before Exercise Considered Harmful
The numbers, especially for competitive athletes, are sobering. According to their calculations, static stretching reduces strength in the stretched muscles by almost 5.5 percent, with the impact increasing in people who hold individual stretches for 90 seconds or more. While the effect is reduced somewhat when people's stretches last less than 45 seconds, stretched muscles are, in general, substantially less strong.
They also are less powerful, with power being a measure of the muscle's ability to produce force during contractions, according to Goran Markovic, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Zagreb and the study's senior author. In Dr. Markovic and his colleagues' re-analysis of past data, they determined that muscle power generally falls by about 2 percent after stretching.
I've seen similar studies that found that stretching before a workout also doesn't seem to reduce injuries either. But at this point stretching is so ingrained in me that it's really a psychological preparation that would be hard to give up.
In the big scheme humans are mere mayflies whose time is quick and brief.
The Newest Protected Minority in England: Goths
A British police force on Thursday began recording attacks on goths and punks as "hate crimes" similar to those suffered by people targeted because of their race, religion or sexual orientation.
Police in Manchester, northwest England, said the new policy would allow them to better protect goths, easily identified on the streets by their black clothes and pale make-up, and members of other "alternative sub-cultures".
Well at this rate they're going to start making it an offense to give scandis an old fashioned 'curb dance'.
Yahoo group. That is all.
And my Twitter spew.

My son watched Red Dawn (the original not the PoS remake) with me yesterday afternoon. He loved it, except the end, which made him sad. I don't blame him, the darn swingset scene always chokes me up too. I can't believe that movie was rated pg-13 though, seemed more bloody than I remembered since I was watching with my kid.
I cannot wait until he is old enough to start watching R movies, we will be starting with Die Hard naturally. (of course I can't decide what age I will feel like R movies are OK)

Reflect upon such Princeton alumnae as Michelle Obama and Sonia Sotomayor.
True intellectual powerhouses, no?
This market from which such women are being priced out. It is a flea market, yes?
By the way, those of you who have not read Michelle Obama's "senior thesis" from Princeton, you really should. Copies are floating around the Web. All of the entitled, indignant racial grievance crap you would expect, plus laughable spelling and grammatical errors which wouldn't even have passed muster at a good high school of the era.

oh Joy. Daughter just informed me her history teacher is making them conduct a mock trial prosecuting Harry Truman for war crimes for dropping the bomb on the theory he did not have the authority to do so.
I asked her if war was declared. She admitted it was. I asked if Truman was CINC. She admitted he was. I asked her what she thought he was commander of....she replied the military. So therefore he had the authority to command the military to drop the bomb in a formally declared war.
I suspect her teacher thinks Truman had to ask the UN or some international body to do so.
I informed her that most historians agree that dropping the bomb shortened the war and saved at least 250,000 lives. She said I was picking on her. I replied I was not, but that her teacher was engaging in propaganda. The opposite of history, changing the facts to fit her political beliefs.

Oh Christ. Is she in high school?
You know, I grew up in Liberalsville Central in the late '90s, but I'll tell you that one of the great lucky breaks of my life was having a history teacher (who was insanely popular w/the students -- this was a magnet school) who in retrospect was clearly a closet conservative. His big focus for our senior year European (note: not 'world') history class? The evils of totalitarianism, from Soviet Russia to Nazi Germany. With readings from Richard Pipes, Donald Kagan, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Walter Lacquer, and Joachim Fest.
None of this namby-pamby "U.S. war crimes" bullshit. That guy quite literally inspired me.

All of this is true -- McCartney still considers Pet Sounds to be one of the greatest albums ever released, and it directly inspired "Here, There And Everywhere" as well as Sgt. Pepper's.
The sad "what if" thing is that, if Brian Wilson had just sacked-up a bit and finished Smile back in early 1967 (it was literally 90% complete, with only some vocals and strings left to be added), it would have blown Sgt. Pepper's out of the water. The Beatles are the greatest band of all time, and Revolver may be the most perfect statement of '60s pop-rock ever created, but Smile? That music comes from another DIMENSION in terms of its inspiration.

yeah, history education in the schools is really starting to make me scream. My son had to research and defend the loyalist point of view in terms of the Revolutionary War. I wanted to go up to school and scream at the teachers "this is America, we won the war so STFU, if you want to defend the loyalists, move to England and see how well it turned out for them."
That's after the section in the history book where it uses the analogy that the patriots were like little kids who made a fuss about having to feed their babysitter when the British told them they had to quarter the British soldiers.

You know I wouldn't mind so much the whole "debate the opposite point of view" side of things if they actually learned basics like the first 10 amendments to the constitution, and maybe the 50 states, and stuff like that. Because researching and being able to argue the opposite point of view is a great skill to have. But, it doesn't seem grade appropriate.

International Baccalaureate program, to be specific. At the time I was there, it was rated the #1 IB program in the entire United States. By pure luck, I happened to live 15 minutes away from the school. Best education I could've ever received, and it was a public school!
But yes, IB History was incredible, and still the way I think anyone should learn it. Junior year was basically Europe from the 1200s to 1789 (with a big focus on the Reformation, Thirty Years' War, and the Westphalian system), senior year had our first semester take you from the French Revolution through 1848 to German reunification and WWI, with second semester devoted to the Russian Revolution, the Weimar Years, Stalinist Russia, WWII, and the Cold War.
It was brazenly Eurocentric, and god love it. We dispensed with American History back in 10th grade (sophomore year)...took our AP exams and that was all.

The Trial of Harry S Truman
It has been charged by the prosecution that US President Harry S Truman, acting as commander-in-chief of American forces in World War II, committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in ordering attacks with nuclear weapons against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945.
The indictment alleges that Truman used excessive force and violated the principle of jus in bello (justice in war) by deliberately targeting civilians and non-military targets with weapons of mass destruction.
Procedure:
· Each side in the case will have one hour to make its case before an impartial court. Opening and closing statements will be included in this time frame. Truman will be judged as if he were in a civil court, i.e. by a preponderance of evidence for or against him.
· After brief opening statements, the prosecution will call as many witnesses from the list below as time will allow. After the witnesses present their testimony, the defense will be allowed a brief (one question) cross-examination.
· After a brief recess, the defense will call its witnesses from the list below and testimony, the defense will be allowed a brief (one
question) cross-examination. If it chooses to do so, the defense may call Harry S Truman as a witness, but this is not required. The court will then adjourn and the judge will consider the evidence and deliver its verdict.
· Witnesses will be questioned and cross-examined by the chief prosecutor and defense counsel or by someone designated by them. The assignment of members of the class to the role of witnesses will also be the responsibility of chief prosecutor and defense counsel. With the exception of Harry S Truman, each member of the class will be assigned the role of a witness. Truman will be assigned only if the defense chooses to have him testify. Additional witnesses can be added upon approval by the court.
· Each side will present to the court a five-page typed deposition of the testimony of each witness. These depositions will be typed and delivered to the court at a date to be announced in class.
· The testimony given by witnesses must be factual and relevant to the case.
this is apparently a very popular exercise. There are a billion websites for it. fuckin teachers

Of course our society isn't designed to produce self sufficient people at 18 anymore, at 18 men are likely to be even more immature then women, and putting off a career for children is widely derided by society.
Still, from what I have seen, people who start later in a career and then stick to it seem to do better then people who take breaks from it if you are talking about the same time frame either way.

Stalin knew about the bomb before Vice President and President Truman did. The bomb was made on FDR's watch; FDR should be facing these charges and not my client. If you give an atomic weapon to a chimp and he kills people, do you blame the chimp or the guy who gave him the weapon? As FDR is dead, I suggest you charge Eleanor in his place.
The Imperial Japanese government and god-emperor are indirectly responsible for all the deaths by having started the war in the first place. They also didn't surrender immediately after the first bomb was dropped making them directly responsible for all the deaths in the second bombing. So all if not at least half the charges should be dropped.

I was inspired by the teacher I've already mentioned to major in 20th-century German and Russian history (i.e. Nazi & Soviet), so that's clearly my 'favorite' era. I use scare-quotes because...yeah, it's kind of a downer. I definitely lean towards the Russian side, even though I have no real command of Russian but can speak German. In any event, I could talk for hours about the confluences and divergences between Soviet Communism, Fascism, and Nazism (hint: practically nobody outside the scholarly realm really gets it right, though Jonah Goldberg came *close* in Liberal Fascism). The genesis of modern-day anti-Semitism and its uses in both regimes was a key subset-focus of mine.
As for non-modern history? Much later in undergrad I became deeply interested in EARLY Roman history (i.e. not the more famous late Republic/early Empire stuff most people know, e.g. Cicero, Cato, Caesar, Augustus, etc...but rather the speculative reconstructive history of the pre-Punic War era). Now I'm something close to an expert at it. In post-Roman Europe, the other era I'm drawn to has always been the Thirty Years' War. Sheer fucking Germany-depopulatin' chaos!

"Here is another truth that you know, but nobody is talking about. As freshman women, you have four classes of men to choose from. Every year, you lose the men in the senior class, and you become older than the class of incoming freshman men. So, by the time you are a senior, you basically have only the men in your own class to choose from, and frankly, they now have four classes of women to choose from."
"Is this fair for women? Nope - not at all. But then sometimes Mother Nature is just a flat-out sexist bitch."
How is this unfair? A pretty young woman is like a minor celebrity. She has potential mates available to her that are close to her age and older. As she ages, her available pool of mates shrinks.
A young man has the opposite experience. He has potential mates available to him that are close to his age and younger. As he ages, his available pool of mates grows.
Women are complaining it's unfair they've lost the options men never had.
Women complaining; what's new about that?

Your daughter needs to learn four important lessons about school:
(a) Many teachers/professors are interested only in forcing their ideology on her;
(b) They have no interest whatsoever in her contradicting or challenging them;
(c) They'll petulantly mark her down if she attempts such things;
(d) She needs to learn to obediently parrot their crap while quietly laughing at them.
This is all very unfortunate, but nevertheless true. However, one thing that makes this pill slightly less bitter is that once one has learned how to flatter lefty educators, they can be some of the easiest A grades around.
Actual learning? She will have to get that somewhere other than school.
"I informed her that most historians agree that dropping the bomb shortened the war and saved at least 250,000 lives."
If her teacher was at all interested in debating the facts, which her teacher is not (see point (b) above), a good starting point would be D.M. Giangreco's _Hell To Pay_, which is an absolutely meticulous historical survey of what a giant bloodbath an invasion of the Japanese home islands would have been.
Expect any such recitation of the facts to be greeted with a C grade.

The stretching studies contradict an article I read in the WSJ shortly before the Super Bowl, which said the SF Giants extensive stretching regimen was one reason they had far fewer injuries than any other NFL team. It said that men, even pro football players tend to blow off stretches, but other teams were starting to copy what the Giants were doing.
Stretching seems to work best as an exercise itself. Do it separately from the intensive exercise.

She had a reputation as a girl who got around.
Sonny was a loner, he was older than the rest.
He was gonna join the Navy, but he couldn't pass the test.
So he hung around town, he sold a little pot
But the law caught wind of Sonny and one day he got caught!
Oh yeah- I know 'The Road Goes On Forever'. Caught him live at a little honkytonk outside of San Antonio, and his live version of that song damn near goes on forever.

>>>Well uh, damn. I knew it was complicated, but not that much. Shades of the Iraqi Sunni-Shi'ite divide there (insofar as virtually nobody knows their real history, although it's pretty basic). The endorsement of Goldberg is heartening, though, wasn't sure if his book was BS or not.
Jonah Goldberg's book (Liberal Fascism) is far, far smarter than its title, and I mean that in all seriousness. The title (and original cover, the one with the Hitler-mustached smiley face) is the sort of punchy Coulter-esque hackle-raising crap that probably was chosen by the publisher because it would tickle the erogenous zones of most hardcore conservatives, but it gives the false impression that the book is just another shallow polemic.
As I mentioned before, I have a significant scholarly background in this specific era (Nazism/Fascism/Communism/Progressivism), and so I was honestly expecting to be embarrassed by the butchery of 20th-century intellectual & political history from a guy on "my team." Instead, I was quite impressed by Goldberg. He DOES make some critical errors, IMO, but his treatment of the relationship between all these various movements is vastly more intelligent and nuanced that I ever would've expected.
The main error he makes (and a lot of other folks do too) is in straining too hard to associate Nazism as an intellectual/political current with Fascism (and therefore Progressivism). The existence of a historical and intellectual nexus between American progressivism and fascism of the Italian (i.e. quasi-futurist) variety is well-attested and damningly solid....but Nazism is really sui generis, and resists association with any other 20th-C. mass movement except, in certain practical respects, Soviet Communism.
Another bugaboo of mine is people who make the tired argument that Nazism was "actually" a left-wing movement because ZOMG they were National Socialists, dood! Nah. Hitler most definitely had the NSDAP, in its early years, employ a number of populist, left-wing slogans in his search for mass appeal...but aside from an inchoate populist-ish loathing for the societal elite (stemming largely from the resentments spawned by Hitler's declasse background), the Nazi program in practice wasn't classifiable as a "left" movement, really. Nor was it genetically of the European Right (which, note, is a vastly different proposition than American conservative/right politics, cf Hayek), although it existed slightly more comfortable with them.

"Horsepower" was popularized by James Watt as a way of comparing his steam engines with things people would be familiar with in the 1780's. Oddly, he totally sandbagged the measurement -- a one horsepower motor could produce 1 horsepower 24/7....while an actual horse would be lucky to produce 1 horsepower for five minutes.

I have to agree with Susan Patton though. Back in 83-84 as a freshman I couldn't get laid to save my life, and I was working hard at it. By my senior year? Rolling in the scamper. Surprisingly, it was mostly freshman too.

Well, male lions have been known to kill the offspring of females they intend to mate with---thereby focusing the female's attention on HIS offspring, and maximizing HIS contribution to the gene pool.
I guess that explains why so many Hispanic men kill their girlfriends' "children by another baby daddy".

The funny thing is that I grew up as a liberal's liberal in liberal Liberalland. But rational examination of atheism shows it to be as much a profession of belief as a cult; rational attempts to "Question Authority" leads one to note the lockstep nature of Progressivists; rational consideration of freedom over one's self leads inevitably to the truism that having someone else pay for the consequences is criminal; and rational consideration of social justice shows that focusing on it is a damnable way to assure the downtrodden bloody-well stay that way.
Which leaves me in an odd spot. I'm not particularly religious -- and can go on for hours with criticisms of organized religions.....but won't, because they're trying, and are mainly good people. I hate the totalitarian Left....but hate Fred Upton and his lightbulb ban just as much -- if not more, for the hypocrisy. I'm a product of the "rural purge"....but I don't think of "The Jeffersons" or "MTM" or "MASH" as any place I'd really want to be. I could believe in "a hand-up rather than a hand-out" if I hadn't seen how that really worked.
And I look at the "Okie from Muskogee" video....and, y'know, it looks better to me today than it did when it was new.
Posted by: Cthulhu's tantalizing tentacles of titillation at April 04, 2013 10:00 PM (kaalw)
This is needlessly, almost willfully dumb. Yes, I fully understand that the original phrase, if we're stipulating, was first coined by a fringe Progressive (and Goldberg covers this in the book). And the general theme of Goldberg's book -- connecting modern Progressivism and statist-centered politics to the foul mutual spawning ground of American progressivism and continental Fascism -- is one I wholeheartedly approve of, which is precisely why I was so pleased to find out that he had done such a good job of untangling the rather complicated (and, at this late date, obscure & hyper-politicized) skeins of intellectual and political history.
But. But. My original post discussing the title was written strictly from the perspective of "judging a book by its cover," which frankly is what 99% of human beings do. Most people look at a title like that an instinctively think "oh yeah, right-wing bullshit Sean Hannity/Ann Coulter book. No more attention required." And that's a shame.
Honestly, some of y'all are way too fucking caught up in the whole "IMA BOLD TRUTH-TELLING SUMBITCH, YO" mindset to appreciate the importance of marketing. The points made in Goldberg's book are/were important. I really would have loved them to reach a more general, less ideologically committed audience. But they weren't gonna do that with a reflexively polarizing title like Liberal Fascism. To be fair, A Socio-Structural Analysis of the Interrelationship of Early Twentieth-Century Mass Political Movements wouldn't have grabbed many folks by the po-po either, so I guess the punchier title at least helped shift more units. But it did also have the unfortunate effect of hiving it off into a ghetto of "dumb political books," which is not what it deserved.

You really have absolutely no insight whatsoever into what motivates someone like me, do you? It has nothing to do with vanity, or reflexive contrarianism, or the like. Those sorts of accusations really are nothing more than thinly-veiled attempts at delegitimizing whatever it is I say (as being borne of an affectation, rather than authentic conviction) without reaching the substance of my points. And that, in all honesty, is an intellectual Party Foul.

Hmm...right now I'm (as I said above) listening to the unreleased 'lost' Beach Boys masterpiece Smile on near-constant repeat. But that's actually pretty weird.
Okay, here's a recommendation. Fantastic work/sleep/groove/love music: Future Days, by classic '70s Krautrock band Can. You don't listen to this stuff for the lyrics, it's all about the peaceful, avant-garde groove and music.
And yes, the entire album IS available on YouTube:

The reason to care is because you care enough to go out of your way to make an otherwise erratic appearance in this thread to insult me. Whether you were aware of it or not at the time you made your original post, that was (unwittingly) evidence enough that you care. Otherwise why even say something? And don't even waste your time trying to sell me on the "because I just wanted to knock on you" line...that only begs the question: why do you care enough in the first place?
Look, the ultimate fact is: it's not that I DON'T care whether you ultimately can come around to a pluralistic understanding of where I come from on the conservative spectrum, it's that I CAN'T allow myself to care. If for no other reason than the nature of the internet means that there are certain people who have decided that the 'armor' they have to wear (for psychological reasons...the T.S. Eliot-style "face to meet the faces that you meet") is that of "I shall deem all those I disagree with to be PUSSIES and therefore project an air of manly strength" variety. You can't win over those sorts of folks...they have ego invested in this discourse that I simply don't.

Ace and I go back far enough (to the near-beginning of the moronblog, though we don't actually "know" each other) that I knew full well that he wasn't trying to insult me. It was just a poorly-chosen hook to hang his point (about Palin) on, one that made me (and my gf) unfortunate targets. I was angry at the time...but not with him.
And ironically enough, I DID have keys, to moderation at least. In fact, I think I still do, although I'd have to dig them up...I've always just been too damn lazy to ever try and post as a cob-logger around here. And at this point, let's be honest, I'd be too divisive a personality.
Frankly, I get some of what you're saying: I DO have a tendency to fall back into a reflexive "oh you proles don't understand how politics REALLY works" stance (I even joked about it on the previous thread). But even so, I rarely if ever post without a true kernel of conviction in whatever it is I'm saying. Get past the rough language and tone -- some which is just my OWN 'armor' as a designated RINO target around here -- and I do feel like I can defend the substance of my points most of the time.

I guess my only point is that I'm not trying to win ANY 'title'. I'm just being me. My views are my views because they're my views, not because I'm trying to play some sort of quasi-triangulating game.
The funny thing is, I'm like 95% in tune with the beliefs of every other regular around here...pretty much the only places I disagree are in terms of the need to 'sell' conservatism to a general public that ain't the same as it was during the Reagan Years, plus a disdain for hardcore 'let's jettison science' approach to issues like evolution or homosexuality. (But note: that same approach leads me to believe that Global Warming is pretty much an intentionally insidious hoax, so I'm trying to apply this metric evenly regardless of where it leads.) I don't try to be a contrarian because it's my "brand," it's just that I guess I feel most motivated to jump in and participate on those topics where I feel we as conservatives are "going wrong" and there's a better (yet still truly conservative) solution that we could choose instead.
Whatever, I'm just a man, like any/every other man out there. And now it's Time For Go To Bed, for me and probably for you too.

Could be profit taking from the high, but it could also be folks figuring out they don't want to be paid in 10 years in a currency whose supply is set to double between now and the end of next year.

One point to keep in mind when discussing the nuking of Japan as an alternative to invasion is that the Purple Heart medals that are awarded today to soldiers wounded or killed in Iraq or Afghanistan were manufactured in 1945 in anticipation of the invasion of the Japanese home islands. Back during the Vietnam war, they manufactured some new medals but then they found a warehouse full of them that had been sitting there since the invasion was called off with the Japanese surrender.

This phenomenon was described in the humorous "Official M.D. Handbook" while I was in medical school: "Going to medical school to meet a husband is like climbing Mt. Everest to get a breath of fresh mountain air."
Looking around at the 20 or so female M.D.s in my town:
-->none put in the 80+ hour work weeks common among their male colleagues
-->all but one married even or up
-->half of the married ones no longer bother to practice at all
Yet another reason for the "doctor shortage."

According to TV ads and sitcoms, virtually all women marry men barely capable of remembering to breathe, never mind be their intellectual equal.
