Overnight Open Thread 4/29/13 (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Good evening, Morons and Moronettes. Maetenloch is on hobo-assassination assignment, so I've been given the duty for this evening. Let's begin:

Tonight's musical inspiration comes courtesy of our good friend Logprof, who sent me this:

And this is just insane:

Martha Stewart Was A Hottie?

Yeah, believe it or not. Check it out. Thanks to Drew M.

Sports News

As many of you are aware, the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin on Wednesday, and you will likely see some traffic from Drew M. and from me as we make our way through to the finals. Congratulations are in order for Drew's New York Rangers and to pastafarian's Detroit Red Wings for getting in... my Nashville Predators had a pretty rough year, and I'll be watching as a detached observer. At first blush, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks have been very consistent this year, and we've seen a return to relevance by the Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota Wild.

A stick-tap is in order for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Winnipeg Jets, who just barely missed the playoffs. Both franchises have perennially struggled, but their fan bases keep hanging in there. One would expect that the future is bright in both cities.

Obviously, the NBA playoffs are well underway as well, and it looks as though the first round is playing out as expected. Since I try to stick to talking about things I have some knowledge about, that's the best I can offer in terms of analysis.

Finally...

WHAT. THE. FUCK?!

Lingerie firm launches womenÂ’s underwear for men

wrong.jpg

And the company are keen to stress the garments are not just for gay men.

They added: ‘We provide our lingerie for guys.

‘We are not concerned if you are gay, straight, vegetarian, republican, anglican, martian or any other persuasion.

‘We just design and manufacture attractive luxury underwear for men.’

Ah. I'm sure everyone here will be racing out to buy some. Thanks (I think) to Jammie Wearing Fool.

With that happy thought in mind, you can find me on Twitter, presumably to yell at me for scarring your eyes with that.

Y'know, on second thought, I can't leave it like that in good conscience. Let me set it right... Hannah Davis (the DirecTV Genie) sounds like a winner...

hannah-davis.jpg

Okay, y'all have fun now, and everyone stay safe. Thanks for reading!

Thanks!  They are all nice ladies.  I've gotten to know most of them because I've been to a lot of their functions.  I'm usually the tech support for them, getting music, filming, and uploading stuff for them.

My wife told me that you have to audition for this troupe, so she had to practice a routine and perform for the owners who teach at the studio before she was let in.  The troupe consists of women of all ages and backgrounds, younger single ladies all the way to grandmothers.  It's mostly a way for women to make friends and dance for each other.

64 Show Us On The Doll Where The Education System Touched You A recent controversy in Germany has resulted in the withdraw of a sexual education book… that was intended for Kindergarteners. The book has graphic cartoons showing a couple in various states of sexual activity, including putting on a condom. Heaven forbid the parents ask their kids to show them what they learned in school! This is nothing new, however. There have been far worse examples in Germany (and from Switzerland). One book entitled “Körper,Liebe, Doktorspiele” (Body, Love, Playing Doctor) went so far as to encourage parents to molest their children More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=2125

There used to be such things as a master hard drive and slave hard drive.  The correct lingo was "Just format this hard drive and slave it to the master one."  That was obviously no good, so now the proper PC wording is "primary hard drive" and "secondary hard drive".   What if you have more than two hard drives?  Well, our PC committee will get back to us on that.

141 #122, that's the initial report from the auditing body. Governor Patrick wanted the whole thing swept under the rug in the name of privacy rights once the Herald started looking into it, but MA congressmen Lynch and Capuano questioned why the Hell a dead terrorist had a right to privacy in matters concerning public expenditures. The state was embarrassed into conducting a semi-open investigation because of this.

185 #172, the typically response when I try to talk about welfare fraud here is that first persona accounts are just accendotal and not real proof and that I'm the one that needs to provide citation grade proof. When I ask for proof that there is no fraud, they of course refuse. The state has always denied the problem and refused to investigate until the feds show up asking for a refund over questionable expenditures from programs which were supplemented with federal funds.

223 If I may be so bold as to link to an e-book that I recently wrote: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKJ70AW

It's a children's book, but it doesn't insult their intelligence.  I tried to put some professional's pride into this and ensure it was worth the price of purchase.  I honestly think it's worth more, but being a new author, I obviously built in a newbie discount.  I edited it and re-edited to ensure there's no glaring spelling errors or grammar errors.  As I said, I don't want to insult any readers intelligence, so I tried to make sure there was a bit of light foreshadowing and use of Chekov's gun and lampshading.

There's also a message of skepticism for authority.  I'm also sure the highly intelligent morons here can catch the subtext of teachers eating their students' brains.

Since I am trying to watch all of this stuff (and thanks to the poster a few threads back who excerpted the links between Algeria, Canadian Chechneyans,  and Benghazi)  I do believe Putin has more information.

404 CBD My dad considered renting out a herd of goats for ranchers with over-grazed pastures in CO. Goats *like* the scrub and not the grass so it gives the grass a chance to recover while still using the land. He figured that Angora or Cashmere goats would also provide a fiber crop every year and help pay for themselves. Don't think yhere was ever enough cash at one time to get started though so it nevrr happened.

406 I got a Classic Records 200g Re-Issue of Aqualung for $22. Sealed. I already have one but they go for $100-150.
Also scored Original Pressings of Naked Raygun's 'Throb, Throb' and The Replacement's 'Hootenany'.
Then I picked up a Wanda Jackson 10" Limited Pressing of Capitol Vault outtakes and a few Record Store Day Limited Pressings that I flipped on eBay for 3-4x what I paid for them.

All in all I am up a hundred bucks and still have the Tull LP. If I get lucky I'll make $250.00 on that trip and I get to cross two records off my list that I have been looking for for a long time.

420 I belong to a club that's about tropical fish that meets every month at a local restaurant. Each month, the first people to the designated meeting room find seats and sit a while....then get up and start rearranging things. As people drift in, each group will start moving tables and chairs, then sit down again. By the time the "official" meeting time comes, the room is generally in the "club normal" configuration.

With a purpose in mind, motivated people can self-coordinate and enrich an environment to further that purpose. Ace has managed to create such a space -- the ONT is amazing in that it's (a) not Ace, (b) handed-off in some arcane bug-ridden process, and (c) [almost] always great [and I say "almost" because some of the self-referential minimalist ONTs have worked well]. It is quite possibly the most amazing nightly phenomenon on the web.....and all put-together from random bullshit.

502 I am wondering exactly how much investigating the FBI did on the Bombers. I actually have some experience with this, having been investigated by the FBI in the late 70s/early 80s. (Someone decided my husband looked like a guy wanted by the FBI for some bombings in the Chicago area. Never mind that they were different heights/weights. The only thing in common was a beard and a snap brim cap.) I found out about it all when I came home after work and said "how did your day go?"

I think they were pretty sure from the start that he wasn't their guy. They videotaped me at work for a week and also at home. They interviewed my aunt to see if we'd ever been in Chicago. They may have interviewed other friends that didn't tell us. They came up to the door afterwards to talk to him, with their bullet proof vests on, but took them off after they were sure he wasn't the guy. They also told my husband that they'd let us know when they caught the guy. Since we never heard back from them, maybe he's still on the loose.

If they could go through all that trouble for me and my husband, pre 9/11, how much of an effort did the FBI put into their investigation of a guy they'd been told had terrorist leanings? I'm guessing, probably not much.

I'm a very happy recipient of Summer Sausage whenever I can convince my sister to relinquish some. By the way, I've discovered the idea that everything is bigger in TX does not apply to deer. What they call deer is similar in size to an Irish Wolfhound (Ok maybe a little bigger) but nothing like the car crushers in Ohio and Kentucky.

Ran across a Momma Moose with her youngun's while in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Scary. She charged but the water slowed her down so we could get away.

Rex never wanted Tebow because he was making his buttfumbling butt buddy feel insecure, so he let him rot on the bench while Buttfumble sucked up the joint

Ignore the ESPN "experts" who say because no one wanted to trade for him that he'd through in the NFL.  Any GM who doesn't run the Jets or Cowboys would be smart enough not to give up a draft pick or take on the contract of someone you know is going to get released

I think Tebow would be a great backup on the Steelers or Bears, or maybe start for the Jags

Yeah, I don't understand it entirely, either. CD's sound kinda... sanitized, somehow. It lacks the visceral punch of vinyl. I don't know what it is about balance, maybe its the way they've been remixed and not due to digital, but it sucks. With exceptions that come to mind, due to faulty original mixing.

He throws a great long ball, but today's quick hit short pass game demands accuracy. If he improves his mechanics and speeds his release up, he's got all the intangibles for a great QB and he's a strong runner.

Tebow will find another team faster than Buttfumble Sanchez will when the Jets finally dump him, probably the day after Rex the Clueless Dog finally gets fired

672 It's all it the bit rate. Red Book audio (the Compact Disc standard) is based on what was doable for a reasonable price in the late 70s. Back then a chip made up of a few thousand transistors running at a placid MHz or so cost more than what we have today with over a billion transistors switching over a thousand times faster.

Check out SACD or DVD-A. One or the other of these would have taken over as the primary formats for retail sales of audio if the iPod hadn't sidetracked the industry into wretched quality levels. A lot of people have SACD capable equipment, like the early PS3 and some Blu-ray players, without knowing what it is.

The difference is huge, allowing for far greater subtlety in the audio reproduction.

Yeah that sounds about right with tape and direct amplification via analog. The article harley links makes it clearer, I think? I did sound stuff before digital became anything other than a novelty. It makes sense. Maybe it's not remixing at all? A good example is "Bitch" and "Honky Tonk Women", by the Stones. In "Bitch", you get a louder Taylor rythm track, which is awesome, but, Richards' key solo is almost not there. It shoukld rip and tear you a new one, but it's just... meh. On "Honky Tonk Women", Richards' ongoing country riffs are fine, but Taylor's lead breaks are fairly inaudible, by comparison to vinyl.

Coooool! You like those screaming demon pickups?  How do they work in the charvel type guitar?  I usually end up putting the duncan distortion in those things for maximum blowtorch. It didn't come with that pos JB did it?  Half of my jacksons and my latest charvels came with JBs. They suck soooo bad in those guitars, and for some reason the asshats have been screwing them directly to the body instead of using the bezels. It makes the guitars way too boomy and muddy with any kind of hot pickup, so I usually float them. I noticed  a pattern with them though, the weaker pickups seem to sound pretty good body mounted. I have a custom shop soloist that came with a frigging pearly gates in the bridge and it sounds good. Kinda why I'm curious about the screaming demon, it seems to be moderate in power and I know lynch liked them.

716  Oooh, I'm going to compare them tomorrow!

Actually, no, I don't have my records here, just CDs. I'll compare them in August.

I am depending on you to remind me, sir!

I'll try to do that. If you haven't heard those tracks on vinyl for awhile, prepare to have your ears rocked. It's not just individual intrument tracks, either. On "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks, the digital version doesn't fuck up the balance, but the whole sound just doesn't have the same punch. The CD version is ok, but the vinyl of that simply jumps off the record and smacks you around the face for 2 minutes. Pure condensed awesomeness.

they are better than moderate I think, they are really bluesy with a bite, takes reverb perfectly

my major two influences are warrenD and lynch so they match the style well

screw them. If someone wants to get into the whole amendment repealing business I know a lot of people who are going to find my amendment repealing plans very unpalatable. who likes their vote?

My political fantasy is that the GOP grows a set of steel balls and calls for a Constituational Convention.  Lay everything out on the table and I guarantee you that the left would go apeshit.  They wouldn't be able to hide the crazy.

720 so, some moron at our bank pulled me aside and started giving me a pitch for signing up for a higher level of service. I listened quite a while and eventually explained I was not especially happy with the service I receive from the bank. She would not shut up about this higher level of service I could "sign up" for. Finally, I asked "so you are saying if I sign up for your higher level of service aka put more money into your bank you will stop doing all of the things that I dislike?" she said " kinda" no way I am putting ten dollars into that bank.

723 688 I am gonna mess this up, otho, but I think what it is has something to do with digital not being able to capture the full range of sound. Which makes no sense, so I am not telling it right, but it has something to do with tape. I think. I should just shut up, because I am clearly not straight on the facts! Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at April 30, 2013 12:33 AM Why cds sound different than vinyl.http://tinyurl.com/yf6w6h8 Posted by: harleycowboy at April 30, 2013 12:38 AM Yeah that sounds about right with tape and direct amplification via analog. Posted by: otho at April 30, 2013 12:54 AM (9gNQd) I was working in radio when the transition from vinyl to CD was happening, and the owner of the radio station hated the sound of CD's. He had the most sensitive ears, and we would spend a day whenever he came into town adjusting the radio station's audio until he thought it was perfect. When CD's came along, he swore that audio became too cold. He said the vinyl rounded out the sound so that the highs weren't too high, and the lows weren't too low. CD's took that away.

yeah 2 good influences. I was hanging with lynch for a bit at one of the guitar shows in texas. We were both in this one booth that had a bunch of vintage marshalls. He was standing right next to me and I realised who he was, so I leaned over and said "yeah you just can't have enough of these fucking things huh?" He laughed and we talked a little about amps.

If your guitar has the stock duncan its probably the JB, they must get them by the truckload. Every frigging jackson V or charvel I got in the last 10 years had them. They don't do the guitars any justice. I got one of those primer scream charvels a few months back, the neck pickup is totally worthless. Its a single coil looking stacked coil, but its listed in the duncan tele section. A fucking tele wind in a charvel??? Somebody over there needs there ass removed.

731 Oh, and the digital/vinyl thing works like this: mass-market CD's were/are produced at 16-bit/44.1kHz, meaning that 44,100 samples are taken per second, each with a resolution of 16 bits. Changes in the sample resolution (8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit) give progressively cleaner data as the number of bits increases. I think SA-CD's are at 20-bit, and to most people they sound noticeably clearer than the 16-bit standard. So the bit rate is one potential source of loss in digital sound quality. The other? The sampling rate (44.1kHz) runs afoul of the Nyquist sampling theorem, which shows that the highest encodable sound frequency for any given sampling rate is half the sampling rate. So the highest possible frequency for a standard CD is 22.05kHz, near but not necessarily above the upper human threshold of hearing. High partials disappear at 44.1kHz, removing some of the life and headroom from the sound. Last I looked, pro audio gear was sampling at 24/192kHz. From my own experience, recording and playing back an oboe with 24/96-capable gear was indistinguishable from the next room, so this is a bit of overkill.

That dude knew what he was talking about. Radio sound is serious business.Back then he was the guy who could make a record something special. When you did your production in the studio, you spent as much time as you could afford mixing it specifally to suit radio broadcast. Well, if you wanted it to sell, you did. Sometimes we spent more studio hours on the mixing and mastering for the best compromise between tranny radio small speakers, AM, home speakers and FM, than what we did doing actual takes.

Posted by: otho at April 30, 2013 01:49 AM (9gNQd) I would get a call from him the night he would arrive in town telling me to clear my schedule for the next day so that we could work on the audio of the radio station. He even kept the chief engineer around because he was great at fine tuning the station even though preventative maintenance was something he and vodka didn't believe in. Hell, the owner flew me to Miami to visit one of the radio stations there and meet with the engineer and PD there to get ideas on how to make our station sound better. The owner lived in South Florida and said that this station was the best sounding station he had ever heard and wanted his radio stations to sound exactly like it, not programming wise, but from a technical standpoint.

743 I have a record player. It's a Numarx TTX1 with digital and analog outputs, and a Shure M44-7h cartridge. It's *not* vintage. It's not the best cartridge in the world but it's good for running through filters because it's got high output and pretty much doesn't skip unless you have the Marianas Trench running across your vinyl. Also low wear. Stantons seem to skip and I have dealt with a lot of "ehh" quality surfaces.

Yeah, always suspected radio sound was above my ordinary ability and cloth ears. Production on a single or LP allows you to focus on one thing. Even with a a variety of tracks you only have to worry about. Concentrate on that, finish it and move onto another project later. With radio you've got to do a balancing act between artists, styles, production, mixing, the whole shebang, every 2 to 7 minutes. Engineering skilz required to get it set up for the best compromise.
