Overnight Open Thread (4 May 2013)
— CDR M

May the Fourth Be With You. Yup, you guessed it. It is a Star Wars celebration day. But did you know that Margaret Thatcher was the first to use this term back in 1979?

Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain's first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was 'May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.
WTF?

I miss the days where, you know, the President of the United States would actually say good things about America while overseas and not throw us under the bus. Mexico's greatest arms dealer blames U.S. citizens for gun violence.

Of the 8% of American “civilian” guns recovered at crime scenes, 302 murders of those murders were traced directly to guns smuggled to the Sinaloa cartel via Operation Fast and Furious, a weapons smuggling plot that transferred 2,500 guns to narco-terrorists that the Obama Administration wants to ban.

In other news, Think Progress wigs out over bra holsters.

The Walking Dead Score

I think AMC screwed up big time by not releasing the original score from The Walking Dead. Bear McCreary is the composer and he also did Battlestar Galactica which was outstanding. Over at Bear's blog, he goes into some very nice detail on his scores and what he was thinking when he composed various songs. Here's his blog on The Walking Dead episode Days Gone By which had I think had one of the most powerful scenes in a TV show in quite some time.

This story arc reaches its climax in a powerful six-minute montage, where we intercut between RickÂ’s mercy killing of a zombie in the park and Morgan attempting to shoot his undead wife with a sniper rifle. The sequence is big, powerful and crescendos on its own. Having established the near-silent musical world of this series, I quickly realized that a traditional emotional cue would be too big for this sequence. Instead, I wrote a soft chorale, evocative of a distant cathedral pipe organ:

As Frank said, the music needed to “hover over the action,” instead of commenting on anything specific in the scene. The result is a marvelously ethereal sequence. Though I had no doubts it was effective, I was still pleasantly surprised to see that people in the audience at the theatrical premiere last week were openly weeping during this montage.

Here's the clip in question: The Walking Dead-Bicycle Girl Scene

Oh, BTW, it would seem Rick Grimes has his own twitter feed.

15 here's a recipe for ya

;">Cornish Pig's Head Pudding

;">½ pig's head
3 eggs - beaten
2 hard-boiled eggs - chopped

;">8oz (220gm) stale breadcrumbs
½ teaspoon mixed spices
Coarse black pepper

;">Sage and Bay leaves
2 cloves garlic - crushed
½ teaspoon nutmeg
;">Completely submerge the head in strong brine for 14 days then remove any floating scum and boil for 3 hours. When cool remove all meat from the skull mixing it with the breadcrumbs and spices and finally pass it through a coarse mincing machine. Now add the beaten eggs and mix into a semi-solid paste which is to be rolled out into a square, and the chopped hard-boiled eggs placed in its centre. The sides are now rolled up and the whole placed in a floured pudding cloth and boiled for 3 hours. Alternatively, the pudding can be encased in water-pastry and steamed for the same length of time.

23 This might have gone better in the Cognitive Ability thread from earlier, but that's dead so I'll put it here. I fixed my lawn mower today. I live on about a 1/2 acre, but most of it is wooded so I just need a little push gas mower to do the lawn part. Last week, the handle rusted through, down near the deck of the mower. The handle consists of 2 pieces of "U" shaped metal, and it's the bottom "U" that was shot. Today I went up to the local lawn mower repair place and, after chatting up the owner, got permission to salvage a handle from his big pile o' old mowers and parts out back. I got home and it wasn't quite right. It was a little too wide, and the legs of the "U" were about 6" too long. I cut them off with the reciprocating saw, used a maul to pound the last few inches of the "U" flat (it needed to be flat, not round, to fit into the spot where it's mounted), re-drilled all the holes needed to mount the part, bent it together a bit and mounted it to the mower. Then I mowed the lawn.

Now, I'm not writing this because I think this is any big deal, much the opposite. What I did was simple, handy around the house stuff. It took, oh, maybe 45 minutes. My father or grandfather wouldn't have thought twice about it, "Oh, mower's broken, got to fix it". That's just what one does, y'know? But I can't think of a single one of my friends who would have done what I did. Some of them would have bought a new mower. Others would have taken the mower down to the repair place and paid $69/hour to have them do a simple part replacement which, if they used the right part instead of adapting the wrong one, would have consisted of removing 3 bolts and two cotter pins, then replacing 3 bolts and 2 cotter pins. Easiest thing in the world, and yet...nobody I can think of would have done the job. We've lost something as a culture there, and the thought of that makes me sad.

39 Hi Rons and Ettes.  I'm riding in a 50-mile ride on Memorial Day Weekend to raise money for the Hole In The Wall Gang Camp's Angel Ride. And I'm trying to hit up the Moron Horde for some donational scratch.

The Ride supports the camp's Hospital Outreach program, which sends out camp staff to visit with and entertain kids with life-threatening illnesses at over 20 hospitals in the Northeast. My son Jonathan got hours of enjoyment from the program while he was hospital-bound in treatment for cancer.

While the ride takes place less than 6 months after my heart attack (hey - I'm a stubborn Sumbitch), it's the 10th anniverary ride,  and it takes place almost 4 years to the day after my son's passing, so I'm not missing it.  You can make a donation at http://tinyurl.com/cwyczc8

and you can find out more about the program at
http://tinyurl.com/c3c2kc2

So cut back on the pron for a week and give to a great cause.

59 32 ChemJeff,

I dented in the trunk.....

seriously you could see my fist's impact points....

was over Xmas eve went to Myrtle Beach wife was in comm blackout because she was rocketed three times in a day and they took casualties...

charming gentlewomen at the front desk of the Day's Inn on ocean Dr at Surfside beach told me I was at North Beach where the beach bums and drunks hung...had boy in the car had just drove 20 hours....

snapped like a rubber band in the parking garage and did three nice combos on the trunk and broke my left hand....went to mother in law asked for a bucket of ice and some tape...

Wife's dad was in awe...

I had to drive to OH on the 26th so anyway my dad is in awe.... I am still moving the hand and when I went back to work in Louisiana we were working on getting the shop in order and building the steel building so i didn't have time to fuck with a cast so every day I'd tie and tape the hand two or three times...

I mostly did a good job and it healed relatively normal looking and held for the time since...

about a month ago I got pissed at Choom King on the TV and clenched my hands...

my pinky knuckle sheared and split....I didn't hit anything....

so know I need it rebroke, possibly shaved, and likely bolted.....

moral of the story always lead with your right....I broke it enough over the years I don't think it would have been dramatic.

Innovation used to be commonplace, but I agree very few people take the time to try to fix anything themselves.  My father believed that you should be able to do almost anything for yourself and passed that philosophy on to me and I am forever grateful.  The Yankee version was something like "Eat it up!  Wear it out!  Make it do!"

The level of design sophistication in many products does make it much harder to do many repairs that were possible for the shade tree mechanic in the "old" days.

91 70 ChemJeff,

Oh it sounds worse than it is...

hell it held for what 6 years or so I think...5 anyway

It is not in deep pain it is swollen but maintains work mobility...Doc is afraid of arthritis but hell it's doomed...so is my right hand....

See I put my right hand through a StreetFighter II video game back in what was it 1993 or so....I was pretty drunk and Blanka reminded me of my boss and I just could not beat him that night so around the 11th defeat I winked at the game and went *pow*....

that was a nice 2100 dollar moment of glory....

the vendor comes in the next day and just looks at it and says "that is supposed to be able to take a brick.....

and I said "yeah well I guess the kid really swung it" and just reached for the wallet.

My right hand still had plastic in it and I had superglued the wounds shut....

that was another "duh"

I'm a lot calmer now but one day my body is just gonna derez like Tron

Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at May 04, 2013 10:16 PM (GEICT) I have two of these holsters. They are the only ones I can use to carry concealed that don't imprint in regular clothes. The trigger is actually covered in the holster. Obviously, the smaller chested you are the smaller the gun you would be able to carry. I'm only 5 ft tall so I have a short torso and can't carry anything around my waist comfortably without it showing. I wish they'd pass open carry in Texas.

Modern materials are a pain in the ass, too.  I've got a sewing machine in the garage that I thought the belt just slipped, but the little plastic thingy the belt goes on snapped.  No idea how to fix that, without spending more than I paid for the machine at a repair shop, if they can even order a new plastic thingy.

179 The actions pre-attack were to support the narrative that Libya was a cheap "win" for Obama. Much like Billy Jeff's incessant crowing about his bombing of the Serbs. The actions during the attack were base incompetence, flavored by a desire to suppress the story about the annex and it's operation. I think they thought it was all over at the Consulate, and the Annex was safe. The actions afterwards were all ass covering lies. They sought to build a narrative that Mitt went off half-cocked when he commented on Egypt. Of course he was right.

That makes no sense. It's easier to rip if it's into the room.

Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at May 04, 2013 10:44 PM (GEICT)

It's easier to pull, but you don't get enough resistance to tear. Picture it this way -- your torso is above the TP roll, and you give it a tug with a bit of sideways to initiate the rip. If it comes off the roll on top, it pulls half-off the roll before any sideways resistance kicks in....if it comes off the roll on bottom (against the wall), it'll be ripped halfway-through before the tug finishes it off.

188 Actually it makes a great deal of sense, Bel Hadj's faction which openly trained the rebels in the Deep Desert, was at odds with the current government, which was represented by Magarief, who was a relatively moderate figure of the Libyan opposition, this was why the GRF was at the annex.

Posted by: Truck Monkey at May 04, 2013 10:53 PM (jucos) I've heard that dogs who do this (and I've had 2 who have) are more submissive dogs than ones who eat directly out of the bowl. In a pack a kill is shared with the strongest getting the largest portions, younger dogs will take their food away from the kill to stay out of the way. This behavior of taking it to the carpet is carry over from that. My purebred very dominant 4 y/o Wire Fox Terrier eats directly from her bowl. My husband's 1 y/o lab mix sneaks in and gets food and goes to the carpet. He outweighs her by 40lbs but she got her bluff in early.

Posted by: CDR M at May 04, 2013 10:31 PM (dKV5k)

Sort of true. The F-16 can pull more than nine Gs, but only for a few moments. They have a G-limiter built in that will not allow them to pull more than nine sustained Gs. I have been told the Israelis have changed the program but that is just a rumor.

Side note: The Block 40s that Osan flies, many were at Homestead AFB where I worked on them. After Hurricane Andrew, our squadron was reassigned to Shaw AFB and the other two were assigned to Moody AFB. Shortly after that, we transitioned to Block 50s and some of our 40s went to Osan AB. At the time, Osan and Misawa AB, Japan were flying Pratt and Whitney engines and we at Kunsan AB, ROK were flying GE engines. The Air Force finally did something smart and all of PACAF are now flying GEs.

280 I hope for the same outcome as you. But think its a 60% chance of acquittal. I don't know the racial makeup of the jury but if there's one singe black on that jury he walks. A billion dead babies are nothing but sacrifices to their true god, Ubinga. *** There are 268 charges against him. There's no way he walks on all of them. AND, the jury has heard about how he treated the poor black women differently than the "clean white girls". Kimberley Guilfoyle was in the courtroom when the D played the race card and she sad it did not appear to g down well with the jury. Plus, no matter the outcome of his current trial, he still has to face federal charges for running a pill-mill.

Pros:
Beautiful outside
Had nice Pho lunch with my man
Had some iced coffee and sat outside chinning
none of the cats have thrown up yet to-day
having home made pizza for supper
have a nice supply of good gin

Cons:
thought a daily currant story about Bloomberg being denied food was real (heard rumours there was an underground movement to do this) and posted it

Douche friends on FB claiming they were GOP but grew a conscience and became Dems posting jackass shit that I end up feeling obligated to respond to

posted a comment on a fan page and pissed off some people (and they are my potential reading public - whoops)

Haven't written much to-day (see distractions above)

Conclusion - Thank God for AoSHQ where losers like me are always welcome.

Nobody mentioned the wind off the polar ice caps that was going to come screaming into Texas and swirl around the stadium, dropping the temperature drastically. By the time Jackson Brown (meh) finished opening, I had my arms pulled into my shirt and was in a fetal position. After waiting another 30 plus minutes for Buffet to start, my husband, who was also turning blue and isn't that crazy about Buffett, announced he was leaving for the car. Twins jumped at the opportunity. I was too cold to argue. Been a fan since I was a kid, finally got to a concert...and missed the show. I'm now in flannel jammies, under a heating blanket with a dog on my lap and feel I may have thawed. Damn that global warming.

Been told by rollers I'm not bad. I play for position rather than the stack. Usualy finish top 3 out of 10 to 12. The problem is, I just want to play more and get better. Real world tables are great. But, I cant play enough of those in person. Online is great for playing a billion hands. But, it's full of monkeys who go all in, etc with shit. But, the most frustrating thing is the fucking clock. I play cautious and need to double check everything in my head before I fold or call. That timer is just too fast for me to keep track of what everyone's doing and what possible combinations I might be facing, etc. Could do much, much better if I wasn't forced to make a decision without thinking it all through. It's like poker for the attention deficit croud. Is there a place online where you can play serious poker without such time pressure? They all seem to give you only 30 secondfs or something. Thanks!

433 "Sean Smith's mom is on Geraldo / she is pissed / she says they told her they would get back to her, and they never did"

Speaking of getting back, I just got back.

But speaking of Smith's mom, wow, all respect to the lady who reared an incredible son, and all condolences to her on losing that son, but who in this late stage of the Obama years would ever believe the "we'll get back to you" line?

There have been *so* many repetitions of that and they've all been transparently false.

My favorite was the woman whose husband was a laid-off engineer not finding new work. Hundreds of applications to no avail. The Won said confidently that in the booming new green-jobs economy he had created, it would be unthinkable for a skilled engineer to go without lucrative offers. Obama told this woman he would make sure her husband got a great job building the sustainable American future, and he said that the woman should send in her husband's resume. She did, of course. And of course that was the end of it and she never heard back. Not a word.

You would think people would quit falling for this particular well debunked scam of Obama's. Then again, they keep falling for street corner three-card-monte scams, too. I guess the supply of marks and rubes really is the only perpetually renewable resource.

Israel does not currently maintain formal ties with Riyadh or Abu Dhabi, and relations with Ankara have been strained since 2009."

Hmmm....I play almost exclusively on Partypoker, and have an account on PokerStars that I use occasionally, and both of those are pretty much the same time-wise  (which is about what your describing for the non-speed  or non-turbo  games).  I assume others sites are fairly similar, but I really don't know.

Probably not the  'easy solution'  advice, but all I can really recommend is more playing time.  Like anything else, the more you play the more comfortable and automatic those decisions will become.

Maybe try doing multiple tables simultaneously on the free games (or really cheap ones, whatever you're comfortable with)?  That will give you lots of experience while forcing you to make lots of decisions quickly.  All that beeping and moving from table to table will probably help with dealing with the time pressure.

452 I wonder what he was smoking when he came up with that one? *** From the article: The super-coil that Gosnell used had been developed by Harvey Karman, a Los Angeles psychologist who killed a woman in April 1955 after attempting to perform an abortion with a speculum and a nutcracker. After that incident he was charged with performing an illegal abortion, and spent some time in jail. Karman (born Harvey Walters) tested the device on "hundreds" of women in Bangladesh, at the government's invitation. “Those women suffered a high rate of complications,” the grand jury report states. “Nonetheless, Karman brought his 'super coil' to Philadelphia, where he found an ally in Gosnell.” Don't they always seem to find like-minded folks to go along with it? Yeah, that's exactly how I play. I don't put dollar one in, unless I have to. Check, check, check. I usually wait until all the cards are on the board to make a move. Then it's usually check or limp. I wait until I got the shit nailed then wait for them to make a bonehead move. It means folding lots of good hands and watching quads et pass you by, but, it gets you into a top place finish.

473 298 Anyone play online poker? Need some advice.

Anybody here hear about Ultimate Poker? (*Not* the same site as Ultimate Bet.) It started up a week ago, and is supposedly the USA's first 100% legal online poker site. Operated by Station Casinos, which has a few actual real-world ("brick-and-mortar") casinos in Vegas and I think elsewhere in Nevada.

The software's already available, and you can actually deposit either in person at one of Station Casino's locations in Nevada or via ACH. You can withdraw the same ways.

Downsides however: they're still working out all the legal logistics, so only residents of Nevada can play. They actually have a setup where they require your mobile phone, then use the towers to triangulate your position. If you're outside of the state of Nevada, you're electronically barred from sitting at a table. Also, even if you're in Nevada, Verizon Wireless customers are barred due to the fact that Verizon won't allow Ultimate Poker to triangulate their customers.

Why more folks can't see what a bonanza (both for USA business and taxes) online poker could/would be, I'll never understand.

And inside there were all these Star Trek and Star Wars fans all dressed up.  There was a guy doing a really bad Dr. Who though his Amy Pond companion was lovely though not a red-head.  Plus these ladies in really out of style dresses they said were from the Renaissance.  Whatever they still look cool.

So well there were these two bimbos in training with the tan and bleach blond hair.  Wearing these cheap sneakers, old black canvas ones well except one girl she was twirling one shoe in her hand showing the world her baby blue sock.  And they were talking to these guys at one table and I about gagged when I heard the one with the big gold bling necklace with her name, bet that is only way she remembers her name like, run her hand through her hair and say to a guy who says he plays videos, "I feel so much smarter now."  Gag, they were like totally gross in their stupidity.

What absolute crap - about on the order of the "There are 50,000 kidnapped children every year" BS that got kid's pictures on milk cartons. The actual number was 800 kidnappings per year - and most of those were custody snatches.

Not even one in six homeless people struggle with hunger. Take a look at all the lard asses walking around - do you see anyone who looks hungry? Try to find anyone - anywhere in this country who looks hungry - other than some anorexics who have severe psychological problems or some advanced cancer patients who are wasting away. You get screwed every so often but long-term percentage wise you're golden.

Agreed. South Americans are weird. Some decent players. Argentinians seem sharper than Brazilians for some reason. Maybe that's just due to limited sample. Dunno. The west euros are a mixed bunch. Tend to be sharp, but some wild players too. Best to be cautious, generally, with them.

There are places in America where I'm sure you could eat like a king, in perfect health, on what your "betters" have snootily deemed unsuitable to have on their tables, and thrown in the garbage.

Would I do that in New York City? Not on your life. Because I've seen how big and bad NYC rats can get. A twenty-two, if you could carry one there, which you can't, will not even slow one of those things down. A retired Manhattan cop told me he hit one local rat with the then-issue .38 Special, center of mass, several times, before it stopped making trouble.

On the other hand, I would pay to see Ben Affleck, making a sappy public relations piece about "hunger in America", get bit right in the face by a hungry rat larger than a rat terrier. I would pay a lot, in fact.

The major cover on the patio is a 9' market umbrella that sticks up through a hole in a six-person teak table. Because I'm tired of its BS, its ribs are bungied to a 3' section of train rail I keep on the table as a centerpiece. This makes it relatively immune to springtime zephyrs, but when it does lose stability the umbrella, the table, and things nearby can be at risk.

Before most grocery stores put in those closed compactors, I did some grocery diving during a few lean years.

They'd chuck out whole cases of lettuce that had one small brown spot on a head, tons of fruit with one small soft spot, etc.  All trivially trimmed off.

Never dabbled in tossed meats though, that seemed kinda risky.

One day I nabbed many sealed cases of cooking oil the dates had expired on.  Yea, like wesson oil goes bad.  I'm still using that shit up 20 years later.

623 Owning and living in a house gives you a keen appreciation of the design-choices made when it was built. For instance, if my eaves were a foot wider, I'd never have to close windows for rain -- just temperature. The people who are trying to build up a business are the ones who get screwed by the Dems. Every bill passed and signed by Obama has been a headache for small businesses and a boon for big business. Why? Big business has the manpower to implement these while small businesses don't, so either they have to hire people or reassign them and hurt their bottom line, or they sell out to the big guy. Guess what is happening? Yep, the big guys are snatching up the little guys. The Dems and government would much rather have fewer and larger companies to deal with so that they can put the boots to small businesses.

671 GGE, twenty years ago I thought Detroit had hit rock bottom. It was already incomprehensibly bad. Nowhere to go but up. But nope. Somehow it's even worse, and it's still vectoring downward. It's a monument, really, and one that should serve as an urgent clarion call across the land. Detroit's simply unbelievable, has been for a generation. Detroit says to me, "this is what they'll do to you, this is where they'll put you. And they will: Keep. You. There." If the natural course of affairs were allowed to hold sway, things would have changed a long time ago in Detroit. That state it is in now is so far out of equilibrium it invites, nay, BEGS, CRIES, SCREAMS for fundamental change. But change is exactly what's not allowed there, ever. Only Hopium.

721 UKIP: rise of the Independents in Britain... "For the Conservatives I understand why some people who have supported us before didn't support us again, they want us to do even more to work for hard-working people to sort out the issues they care about," David Cameron said. Ahem, "they want us to do even more" sounds awfully familiar. More, more, more v. LESS IS MORE. Choke the taxpayers with EVEN MORE comprehensive [whatever] reform legislation to guild the political asses' lily while paving the road to serfdom. As if politicians can sort out anything beyond what corruption they can force, "Because I Could." Repeal. Repeal. Repeal. Too big to fail means it's already no good. Americans aren't the only ones recognizing that "bigger is better" doesn't mean better for you or for me. Only better for the autocracy. "they want us to do even more" shit

722 For every law the bastards pass, they need to eliminate 12.

723 12 laws, or 12 of the bastards?

727 707 Posted by: JDR-Taq at May 05, 2013 02:48 AM (e7KZr) I dunno, this kind of forum post is common in gaming forums. Every post in the WoW forums was/is of the same vein. Video game users tend to be hyperbolic about the problems/inconveniences they perceive in games.

728 "Because I Could" Don't assume this is an anomaly; rather, the norm. CBS/DFW North Texas CBS 11’s I-Team has obtained a study that says Oncor, the giant electric utility company in North Texas, is collecting hundreds of millions of dollars from customers for federal taxes that don’t exist. “Since 2008, they have collected $500 million for the purpose of paying taxes on their income,” said Randy Moravec, executive director of the Texas Coalition for Affordable Power, a coalition of member cities – including Arlington, Plano and Frisco – that works toward finding the lowest rates for residents. Asked how much of that money has actually reached the Internal Revenue Services, Moravec said: “None … not a penny.” /gotta hand it to the investigative journalists, Jack Douglas and Ginger Allen.

Given that there are many fed taxes that are on the books, but not listed, this sounds like a great scam.  I'm betting there is no prosecution or jail time because they contributed to the right party!

740 A little chilly here. Overcast. But I'll take to the sweltering death humidity that usually happens around here the instant winter ends.

Well DC was a fevered swamp of disease until things like draining the swamp, insecticide, and air conditioning.  Now its just a fevered swamp.
