VDH on Why We Should Read Old Books

In the tragic world, thousands of personal agendas, governed by predictable human nature, ensure that things do not always quite work the way they should. We can learn from classics that most of us are more likely to resent superiority than to reward it, to distrust talent than to develop it. With classical training, our impatient youth might at least gain some perspective that the world is one where the better man is often passed over - precisely because he is the better man. Classics remind us that our disappointments are not unique to our modern selves. While we do not passively have to accept that unfairness (indeed Achilles and Ajax implode over it), we must struggle against it with the acceptance that the odds are against us.

...Or what about Will Kane (yes, I know, but a buckboard ride with young Grace Kelly to where exactly?)? Or Ethan Edwards (a walk to where after going through that swinging cabin door?)? Medals, money, badges? The lasting admiration of Hadleyville? Hidden gold from the Mexican peasant village? The mayorship of Shinbone? An hour with Jean Arthur?

Society is as in need of better men as it is suspicious of them when it no longer needs them. Most of Sophocles' plays are about those too noble to change - Antigone or Philoctetes - who cannot fit in a lesser society not of their own making. Read E. B. Sledge's With the Old Breed and cry over the great Marines who were ground up in the Pacific. So often they were like Lieutenant Hillbilly Jones and Captain Haldane who saved the U.S. and are now all but forgotten. In today's collective history, they are simply the anonymous cardboard cut-out race and class villains who needlessly decimated the Japanese out of racially driven animus and thereby bequeathed to us the abundance that we take for granted and that allows us such self-indulgent second thoughts.

Why Young People Shouldn't Steal Ikea Packs or Porsches

You're 18.  You are not, apparently, of above average intelligence.  You and your friend have just stolen a BMW.
It doesn't matter where you're going.  You're going.  You're styling.  You're cruisin'.  You're free.  You're cool.

Science: Do Koozies Keep Beer Cold?

Yes (under certain conditions) but not for the reason you think.

At 35°C and a relative humidity greater than 60%, the temperature rise due to latent heating exceeds that due to heat transfer from dry air: Latent heating is the dominant factor warming your cold beer. The rate of latent heating decreases as the outside of the can warms, and the heating ceases completely once the can's surface temperature exceeds the dew point (the temperature to which air with a given water-vapor content must be cooled to become saturated) and water no longer condenses on it.

Why Do You Have Gout?

Mostly because you chose the wrong parents although diet does play a role as well.

Genetics, in fact, may play the biggest role in whether one gets gout, but it is hard to overlook diet. "There's a clear association," said Dr. Kenneth G. Saag of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.

People who are overweight are more likely to have the disease, because their greater amount of tissue leads to excess uric acid production. (On the other hand, gout is common in parts of the world where obesity is much less of an issue.) And people who drink a lot of alcohol also seem to be at higher risk. Oddly enough for a disease of kings, the biggest culprit seems to be the nectar of the royals who inhabit the nose-bleed seats at Yankee Stadium - beer.

Those Amazing LIVs - Part I

"Although 63 percent said that they had a favorable opinion of Planned Parenthood, including 38 percent of those who identified themselves as pro-life, 55 percent of those polled did not know that Planned Parenthood performs abortions."

Those Amazing LIVs - Part II

"Four in ten Americans (42%) are unaware that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is still the law of the land, including 12 percent who believe the law has been repealed by Congress, 7 percent who believe it has been overturned by the Supreme Court and 23 percent who say they don't know enough to say what the status of the law is."

LA Times Bans the Term 'Undocumented Immigrants'

Apparently it's racist too just like the term 'illegal alien' is despite appearing in current US law.

The Los Angeles Times has announced new guidelines for covering immigration.
The goal is to "provide relevance and context and to avoid labels."
That means stories will no longer refer to individuals as "illegal immigrants" or "undocumented immigrants," but instead will describe a person's circumstances.

A memo from The Times' Standards and Practices Committee announcing the change explains the move away from labels:
" 'Illegal immigrants' is overly broad and does not accurately apply in every situation. The alternative suggested by the 1995 guidelines, 'undocumented immigrants,' similarly falls short of our goal of precision. It is also untrue in many cases, as with immigrants who possess passports or other documentation but lack valid visas."

Actually most 'undocumented immigrants' working here DO have documents - they're just someone else's i.e. identity theft.

Orwellian Double-Speak, the 2nd Amendment, and Joe Manchin

War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength, and gun control laws expand your 2nd Amendment rights.

So claims Joe Manchin while defending his proposed gun law.

This not only protects your Second Amendment rights, it expands your Second Amendment rights.

Watch the video for the full shamelessness.

5 Victims of Communism Day, 2013 Today is Victims of Communism Day. It is also “May Day,” where “useful idiots” march and demonstrate in free countries, while those who have to actually live under Communism are made to march lest they face dire consequences. Nobel Laureate Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn recounted in the Gulag Archipelago an account of a local Communist Party meeting where an affirmation of Stalin was adopted. People stood up and started to cheer and clap like they were required to do. They clapped, and clapped, and continued to clap until their hands were raw and bleeding. 16 Weird question: In the 20 years or so Jason Collins has played team sports and dressed and undressed with other men did nobody ever notice how often he had a woodie? Maybe it doesn't work like that. Maybe he could turn tumescence off when it wasn't appropriate, but I wonder. I know my interest would be clear if I shared a dressing room with a bunch of cheerleaders, snapping towels and play wrestling.

Jury duty has ended, with the defendant nicely convicted of several crimes, based on irrefutable evidence.

Happy about that-the verdict was unanimous.

What was disconcerting was listening to 2 witnesses describe the actions.  That was done with an astonishing nonchalance--as though it were no more than a discussion of the weather.  Nothing in the body language or the oral part showed the slightest trace of concern.

I honestly think people like that could kill you and not have an iota of remorse or even interest after the fact.

98 Good evening once again you beautiful morons.  It is time, once again, for my nightly shill on this smart military blog that I've been tickled to read since 2006 (and the whole Omar Shariff dies from a hellfire missile and being addicted to love, but mostly hellfire missile to the face was a AoS meme of sorts).

For those who have not been on here the past few nights, allow me to recap:

I recently published an e-book on Amazon, available here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKJ70AW entitled "My Teachers are Zombies."  It's a kid-friendly book about a group of fourth grade friends who discover that their teacher and principal are zombies that will eat their brains (insert your own joke about the American education system here).

I'm not exactly sure why I shill here, maybe it's just comforting practice before I shill elsewhere.

I can be contacted on Twitter @TomInKorea and I thank you all for indulging me in this non-paid advertisement.

107 Repost from yesterday's ONT:

>>> Boredom on a long drive leads to much musing:

Two yellow eyes glared down from above. "My precious Fluffy," his client had said, "my dearest little angel is trapped and needs your help." What she had failed to mention was that her angel was an Avatar of Hate, eyes burning with malice at all in sight.

As she continued her natter behind him, he wondered if this was Fluffy's attempt to escape a tortured existence. For the briefest of moments, he felt a pang of sympathy for the feline - but a job was a job, and a wizard needed to pay his bills the same as anyone else.

Richard combed his mind for an appropriate chant, and settled upon a Litany of Protection to the Dark and Terrible Lady. A well known prayer half a world away, few knew the language here, so the arcane sounding words would project wizardly mystique. And, he thought, perhaps it would please Her Grace to shield him from Fluffy's wrath.

The goal is to "provide relevance and context and to avoid labels."

That means stories will no longer refer to individuals as "illegal immigrants" or "undocumented immigrants," but instead will describe a person's circumstances.

So I'm guessing "wetbacks" is out. Unless maybe the story could say that the perp's back was damp, or had been damp recently as a result of immersion in the Rio Grande.

150 Clutchless manual transmission, oh yea VW had them.  It was called the Semi-Automatic.  Three gears.  Pressing down on the gear shift engaged a micro-switch that allowed you to shift.  Alas way too many people would just leave their hand pressing down lightly on the gear shift.  Which did bad things to the transmission.  Which is why it is called Semi-Auto Suicide and people ripped them out as fast they could for a regular 4-speed transmission.

175 I was wondering how much money the Kochs were willing to lose on the LA Times, and then it occurred to me.

The problem with newspapers is that they have the wrong revenue model.

Currently you get some revenue from getting businesses to advertise in your paper - which is worth more the more readers you have and you get some revenue by charging per paper.

The second stream is problematic since papers are dogmatically leftist, and you can get better leftist content from the internet, or even a variety of opinions if you are a h8ter.

But papers aren't valuable because they generate advertising dollars. And there content is as noted poor. Their real value, and the whole reason the Kochs are probably interested is that they are a way to push your message to a wider audience.

So, my idea to revolutionize the newspaper business - sell space not just to advertisers, but also to interested political parties.

Make page 1 the Koch take on the news...and sell pages 2+ to other parties. Let the NARAL folks bid against the pro-life people. Let Gun control Inc pony up to express their views the day after the NRA does.

I would imagine that initially the organized left wouldn't pay - they have all these other outlets. But the currently marginalized would have major incentives to do so.

Suddenly you've got something new...and something people will want to read. Be outraged at Neo NAZI rants. Be weirded out by Railians.

It would be something different...and I think a case were there is a major market waiting to be tapped...

205 OK, Horde, this abortion thing has revolted me just about as far as I can go. I want to run a counterattack idea past y'all to gather opinions, gather suggestions, and gather volunteers. I am ready to pull the trigger, so to speak, on starting a non-religious abortion information site. My idea is simply to point out that "clump 'o cells" is total bullshit without any preachy stuff. If God is going to reach those people who are considering an abortion via the religious, there are already plenty of mechanisms for Him to use. My goal is to create a site where parents can point there teenagers *before* they get knocked up so the kids see what they would be dealing with. Most teenagers would be appalled at killing a small child, especially the girls. Let's show them that that's exactly what they would be doing. I want to create and grow a site that focuses almost exclusively on pictorial facts. My current thought is to divide it up into several sections. People can view what they can handle, and skip the stuff that's too graphic. 1. This is what a baby looks like at 6 weeks. This is a fully formed - if incredibly tiny - foot at x weeks. Real pics of real babies. 2. Sonograms ==> born babies ==> kids ==> adults. I want to show people that these funny little Caspar the Friendly Ghost cartoon characters they see on the sonograms come out as real, honest-to-God *babies* that turn into kids and adults that the parents are proud of and love. 3. Pictorial story of a baby's growth in utero. It would be nice to be able to draw home-school and tutoring students with the biology and then let them stumble into the other seditious stuff while they're poking around. 4. The ugly stuff, the post-abortion pictures. This is what the outcome looks like. Should be fairly shocking and sobering after having looked at all the baby pics before. 5. Stories/vignettes/postings from those who have aborted and regret it. The Stories section is the only portion that would be word-heavy. Other than picture captions, I don't believe many other words are necessary. Sorry for the long post. Sorry for a serious post on the ONT, but I trust the Horde. Anybody have any thoughts on this bright idea?

I think the fundamental problem is that the kind of people you want to reach specifically don't want to get that kind of information.

Like so much of liberalism, support for abortion on demand is mostly based on willful ignorance.

At a basic level the kind of people who believe that "you can't get pregnant the first time" will quickly graduate to "it is just a clump of cells I can get rid of right?"

I think that the non-religious argument against abortion is indeed the strongest one. The problem is this is also the direction the pro-life movement has been going in for at least 20 years.

While most religious people are pro-life, the notion that the argument against abortion is primarily a biblical one now is simply untrue.

265 Double Big Mac? I have never heard of this delicacy before. Wot, really? /checks wiki limited availability in the United States, though commonly available in Canada (marketed as a Double Big Mac) Canada FTW. That is surprising, as I once ordered a McD Large fries and Coke in the States, and got the giant drink barrel and shipping container of fries that in Canada was called the Supersize. A million blood vessels cried out out in pain, and were as suddenly silenced. I don't want to know what the US Supersize was like.

Anarchists in Seattle, Wash., left behind thousands of dollars in damage following last yearÂ’s May Day march, but this year police had assistance on the streets in the form of Phoenix Jones and his Rain City Superhero team. We donÂ’t know if the costumed vigilantes took down any evildoers, but they did manage to draw the mediaÂ’s attention away from the protestors, which was a heroic feat in itself.

We were talking about this last night, just before the ONT came up.  I was telling everyone how as I've grown older, I've changed in that I've begun to despise crowds or being around large groups of people.  I guess I'm becoming old and grumpy like Clint in Gran Torino (GET OFF MY LAWN!!!).  I also laid out my next and last house that I'm going to buy.  It'll be in the middle of nowhere, and I'll have no neighbours that I can see, and the house won't be visible from the road because there's going to be wooded cover before it opens up in a clearing where my house will be.

346 I learned to drive on a 1948 Ford F6 dump truck. It took me both feet to hold down the clutch pedal. You sure appreciated the 2-speed rear end in those.

The thing is, hydraulically-activated clutches. Modern clutch pedals "go over center," that is, get easier to hold down beyond a certain point in the throw. When those first became popular, old performance drivers lamented the loss of feel and feedback, same as with power steering and brakes. And, er, condoms.

I drive a Borg-Warner T-10, with a crank-rod actuated clutch, and a factory Paxton V8 in front of it. But I did finally give up on the IH tractor, in favor of the John Deere with the two pedals for front and back. Even after breaking the tractor for a trans and torque-amplifier rebuild, I was starting to walk like Walter Brennan.

You can tell a shitty stick driver right off the bat. You press the clutch, put it in gear, and release the clutch pedal, and you wait...and wait...and wait for the gear to engage and then finally as the pedal is 1" away from being fully released, it catches.

9/10 times the owner of the car is a women, and they like to "ride" the clutch.

363 339 tip: Do not buy protein at the market or at GNC. Buy it online from an online supplement store for half the price. Posted by: soothsayer at May 01, 2013 11:46 PM (NLH1M) Syntrax Brand is one of my favorites. The cappucino flavor goes well in my morning coffee. They have a Nectar line that is fruity in flavor, my Spousal Unit likes the Roadside Lemonade and Fuzzy Navel. About 30 g protein a scoop, 0 carbs. I can't take the whey smell, so I tend to have mine in a shaker bottle with a lid or default to protein bars. Quest are easily the best, high protein level, lower carb than most, great flavor. I've tried some egg based proteins as lactose can give me issues (and whey is lactose based). Jay Robb is decent. There's also one that is a premix called Muscle Egg. The chocolate is really good but drink it in a glass you can't see through. It's pretty much egg whites.

You're killing me here, kid. My son had one good summer of one-on-one tutoring, flew, and did Philmont, but I had it all set up for him to work part-time in the local hot rod shop, and he was looking forward to it too, and it was not in the cards. Without "community leadership" projects, intense tech involvement, and a sport, you're just not going to the country club dance. Now, he went to national competition in tech projects, and was a national champion in his sport, and he did get an absolutely free education out of it, but I've been saying since his sophomore year in high school that the system still owes us one childhood.

I freely admit that I deprived him of a cultural heritage so that he could be successful. Life all about choices innit, and fucking arrogant dweebs with advanced degrees in "counseling" get to make those choices for us. Because we say so.

Year two, the police and local officials got their act together a little bit, but it was still chaos. Well, this year's event was a yawner. I estimate that there were 500 cops per mile of road. Tolerance levels were set to 'lethal'; fuck that stun stuff.

Read the canon -- the sunken island with R'lyeh is in the South Pacific. So it's entirely appropriate to use "aloha" -- which, in Hawaiian, means "affection", "peace", "compassion", and "mercy" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloha]....and also "hello", "goodbye", and "I shall devour your soul."

more money than milk

If you have 3 protein drinks/day, that's over 60 grams of protein.

5lb tub will last you 23 days, cost you $40, so that's almost $2/day.

Milk: You need to drink almost 3 glasses of milk to get 20 grams of protein. You also drank about 20 grams of fat, and 35 grams of sugar!

Google "cholesterol plant." Various plants synthesize cholesterol, albeit in lower concentrations than those found in animals, where inter alia it appears in nerve cell membranes. Plants, not having nerve cells, have considerably less cholesterol, but not none.

561 Cholesterol and Plants E. J. Behrman* and Venkat Gopalan Department of Biochemistry, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210 There is a widespread belief among the public and even among chemists that plants do not contain cholesterol. This error is the result (in part) of the fact that plants generally contain only small quantities of cholesterol and that analytical methods for the detection of cholesterol in this range were not well developed until recently (1). Another reason has to do with the legalities of food labeling that allow small quantities of cholesterol in foods to be called zero (2). The fact is that cholesterol is widespread in the plant kingdom although other related sterols, such as β-sitosterol (henceforth referred to as sitosterol), generally occur in larger quantities. No current biochemistry text that we have examined provides an accurate account of cholesterol in plants. Here is a suggested paragraph for the next generation of biochemistry texts: More than 250 steroids have been described in plants (3). Of these, perhaps sitosterol, which differs from cholesterol by an ethyl substituent at position 24, is the most common. But plants also contain cholesterol both free and esterified. Cholesterol occurs as a component of plant membranes and as part of the surface lipids of leaves where it is sometimes the major sterol. The quantity of cholesterol is generally small when expressed as percent of total lipid. While cholesterol averages perhaps 50 mgkg total lipid in plants, it can be as high as 5 gkg (or more) in animals. http://chemistry.osu.edu/~gopalan.5/file/7B.PDF

628 Clutchless manual transmission, oh yea VW had them. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 01, 2013 11:07 PM (ULEme) Anna, my late uncle bought one of those when they were introduced. It was called the "automatic stickshift", IIRC. He had had his left leg fused at the knee due to terrible arthritis, and obviously could not drive a standard shift. His previous car was a '52 Chevy with Powerglide. He kept that VW until he passed away, and maintained it in pristine condition, as indeed he did the Chevy.

631 Nobody should be given a driver's license if they cannot drive a stick shift, and can't demonstrate at least some level of awareness of how an automobile works. If you are more in tune with the machinery, you are less likely to do stupid things with it. I've rebuilt engines in my youth, my last new car, an Audi, I couldn't have fixed a single thing under the hood.

FYI:

the not knowing English might be a scam, not knowing where places are may also be a scam and not being able to make change is, again, likely to be a scam.

1st the lack of language. Some have fairly good knowledge of English but depending on circumstances  can manage to jack up the fare  by not. Their are many ways to do this and most rely on YOU the passenger getting frustrated and accepting whatever they do to you, charge you or how they get to where you want to go. Most people don't want to get in a fight with a cabbie particularly not somewhere not home.

2nd Ditto above for where places are. They get going and all the while they're arguing or questioning where you want to go, they are likely going the wrong way which you will pay for when you finally get your destination straightened out. They also might be trying to tout a particular place (say you want a certain hotel) some people will actually accept the new destination (unless they have reservations somewhere) Plus they may throw the flag before you realize you're not in the right place and then claim they have to drop the flag again if you argue they have to take you where you wanted. This second drop means you pay the initial charge again.

3rd fumbling with change can get them an increased tip or returning to little and you walk away means they keep the extra.

Tips for cab use:

Don't get in a cab until you know the driver can
a) understand you and you him
b) are sure he knows where you want to go
c) have agreed on any charges

They do not get paid by the hour they get paid by the drop (initial charges which are a set amount and an initial minimum distance), the distance and the time (if there are delays and they KNOW where all the delays are. time charges are usually the equivalent of the distance that would've been traveled in that amount of time so they get lots extra).

they have an incentive to scam you. Since they are foreign they have little sense of honor to a customer (some do, some don't. most don't) you are a piggy bank that they have a limited amount of time to figure out how to open and get the money out without you calling the law or physically assaulting them.

This comes from my personal experience both as passenger all over the world and as a cab driver (and observing my fellow drivers as I never scammed anyone. Which is why I always made less money than my fellow drivers.) here in the USofA.

May 1st was a shitty day, full of useless fucks waving Che flags and  wandering around by the courthouse wearing t-shirts that read, "No human being is illegal!" And by the train station I saw some pamphlets on the ground that said "AS - the revolution is just the beginning."

Great.  I don't even know what that means, but it scares the crap out of me.

Have had to drive home in cars that suffered broken clutch linkage on several occasions. Incidentally, if you have a car with a Warner Gear overdrive in it, you can easily and safely shift without the clutch when it is freewheeling mode, below the overdrive cut-in speed.

I am obsessed.  Did a chronology to try and get the facts straight in my head about the info in the affidavits about the bombing.  Diaz is Diaz Kadyrbayev.  Azamat is Azamat Tazhayaker.  Robel is Robel Phillopos.  Joker is lil bro terrorist.  Speedbump is speedbump.

15 Apr - 2:49 pm - the bombing

17 Apr - Afternoon - Diaz drives to Joker's dorm, texts him to come down, they talk, Joker goes back to dorm room.

Midnight - Joker was with Azamat at his Carriage House apartment partying until midnight

18 Apr - 4 pm - Joker gives Azamat a ride home to the apartment after Azamat's class.

5 pm - FBI releases Joker's photo.  Robel calls Diaz and says it looks like Joker.

8:43 pm - Diaz texts Joker and says it looks like him in the photo.  Joker texts back "LOL" and says to "I am about to leave if you need something in my room take it"

9 pm - Diaz meets Azamat at the apartment.  Diaz calls Robel and tells him to meet them  at Joker's dorm room

10 pm - at Diaz's direction, they collect the backpack, Vaseline, fireworks tubes and lap top from the room and return with it to the apartment

midnight - the brothers car jack the Asian dude, who escapes at a gas station.  Gas station is very close to Robel's apartment. The brothers get spotted by Watertown PD, throw two IED's at them and engage in a firefight.  Car is abandoned, FBI recovers an intact pressure cooker IED from the car.  Joker injured in the gunfight but gets away.  Speedbump dies.

19 Apr - 6 am - still at the apartment together, Diaz, Azamat and Robel hear on the news speedbump is dead.  Diaz says they have to throw away the backpack and what they put in it.   Diaz puts it in the dumpster, and Azamat watches the dumpster get emptied that day.

19 Apr - FBI interviews all three

20 Apr - FBI interviews all three, Diaz says they all decided to get rid of the back pack.  Azamat says Diaz made the decision.  Robel denies everything.

25 Apr - FBI interviews Robel again

26 Apr - FBI interviews Robel again, and they recover the backpack

Drug Enforcement Agency agents were seen driving out of the complex off Carriage Drive as a mass of federal, state and local police swarmed about. Neighbors flocked around the area, sharing rumors and cellphone images they had collected of the encounter.

Joe St. Pierre, a resident at the complex, said he overheard one of the men arrested being spoken to by an FBI agent.

"They said the kid got dropped off by the bomber at 4 p.m. (Thursday)," he said.

"I saw the FBI agent ... come over and interrogate him," St. Pierre said. "He was telling him 'Don't even look at me; don't be smiling. You think this is a joke?''"
