Still a bit sick but feeling better.

Thank You Jenny McCarthy I:  Baby Dies of Whooping Cough In Orange County

"This is the first whooping cough death the county has seen in decades. . . . Officials said the family chose not to vaccinate their child. Some parents are choosing not to fully vaccinate their children because they worry there is a link between the vaccinations and autism."

Thank You Jenny McCarthy II: Measles Epidemic in Wales Has Roots in Antivax Movement

More than 800 people have been diagnosed with measles in Swansea in this recent outbreak. People are lining up to get their vaccinations, and a campaign has been started to get more people vaccinated, which is a good thing; I just hope it's in time. But with so many people contracting the illness, serious repercussions are almost inevitable.

Wales has had low Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) vaccination rates for some time . since about 1998, in fact, when Andrew Wakefield published his bogus study in the Lancet falsely linking the MMR vaccine to autism.

And no thanks to Jenny McCarthy - an anti-vaccine mom finally changes her mind:

And yet I still wondered about that list of things that I would now, I suppose, have to surrender to and immunise my child against. Polio, for one -- a couple of my parents' pensioner friends still carry the limp left by their childhood polio, but none of my friends do, because it isn't around any more. And diphtheria -- what was that, even? I knew it had killed one of Queen Victoria's daughters, but that wasn't our reality.

The reason it wasn't our reality was, of course, due to a continuous programme of immunisation. Duh. Diphtheria is a disease that still kills one in five infants it meets, even if they get treatment, their necks swelling up until they can no longer breathe. I have now seen a picture of a child whose neck was ravaged by diphtheria, bloated like a foie gras goose about to burst. I wish I could unsee it.

Well mostly changes her mind - she had to rely on her mother to actually get the vaccinations done:

When it came to it, my mother still had to take my daughter for the injections, as I was too squeamish. The fact is, I still have a hunch that puts me off vaccinations, a hunch that I can't explain. I just feel funny about them. But I feel even funnier about the thought of mine or anyone else's kid dying of measles in this country in 2013, like Roald Dahl's daughter Olivia did in 1962. "Got to hospital," he wrote in his diary. "Walked in. Two doctors advanced on me from waiting room. How is she? I'm afraid it's too late."

In 1986 Roald Dahl wrote a public letter asking parents to vaccinate their children against measles - an option he never had.

Quote of the Day

Occasionally, I miss the Bush years. Not because I'm a "compassionate conservative" or because I have a hawkish foreign policy outlook, or even because I miss the leader of the free world routinely asking after my lunch plans (and the lunch plans of everyone in a large crowd). I miss the Bush years because, back then, when someone in the government did something ridiculous to infringe on the personal liberty of American citizens, people would turn out in droves to Hula Hoop for Peace on Pennsylvania Avenue, and plaster what social media sites existed with Ben Franklin quotes about how people are stupid for giving up their rights to the illusion of security. But now, the government just does sh*t like this and everyone is like, "meh.

The Underground: The Only Part of the Economy That's Growing

According to this article the underground economy has doubled since 2009. And that's not a good thing for society or America:

But there is this, too, which concerns us far more than even hundreds of billions in lost tax revenue: When with regulation and taxation we drive the legitimate economy in to the shadows, we turn otherwise honest people who are only trying to earn a living in to dishonest people. Just as broken windows, litter, and graffiti beget more serious crime, underground business corrupts the soul, and makes people more likely to take or pay bribes, evade taxes, or otherwise break the law more comprehensively. Increasing quotidian dishonesty is a symptom of a culture in decline, and we ignore its consequences for posterity at the peril of our children.

Joey Biden and the Great Chocolate Cannon

Would be a great children's book title. Unfortunately it's also a heartbeat away from being president:

A Wisconsin boy wrote Vice President Joe Biden with an unusual suggestion for making the nation safer: Create guns that shoot chocolate bullets.

On Monday, he got an unusual response: A handwritten note from Biden on vice presidential stationery.

The response thrilled the child, a 7-year-old second-grader, along with his classmates and staff at Downtown Montessori Academy in Milwaukee. Hours later, teachers and others at the school were still abuzz.

"Everybody was impressed. You should have seen everybody. Their faces were just wide-eyed," said Virginia Flynn, the head of school. "The fact that it was handwritten made it really special," she added.

So Why Didn't the 1967 Borders Bring Peace?

The constant refrain of Israel's critics in the last few decades has been the need for the Jewish state to withdraw from every inch of territory it won in the Six-Day War and to return to what they erroneously refer to as the "1967 borders." But as Israelis celebrate the 46th anniversary of the re-unification of their capital city today that was made possible by that war, it's appropriate to ask why peace did not reign in the Middle East on June 4, 1967 prior to the beginning of the "occupation."

Lottery Odds 101

it's rather simple, here, observe..

we'll use 176 instead of 176,000,000

1/176 = 0.0056818..probability of winning

2 tickets will give you 2 chances in 176 = 2/176 = 0.01136...probability of winning

now watch this:

1/88 = 0.01136...

See that? It's the exact same probability.

2 tickets will give you 2 chances in 176 = 2/176 = 0.01136...probability of winning

now watch this:

1/88 = 0.01136...

See that? It's the exact same probability.

Game of Thrones is literally moving at a snail's pace. We'll have to wait another year for 10 more episodes.

It might be another 2 years until the Dragon Lady lays siege on King's Landing.

The problem is that GRRM takes so damn long to write each book that they run the very real risk of getting through all the books before he finishes the next one.

As for the vaccination thing.  Do not forget Muslim clerics in Africa claim the vaccines are a Western plot to make them infertile.  So they get polio outbreaks.

And the use of Mercury as an anti-growth agent stems from one case in Australia I think in the 1920s.  One bottle of vaccine was reused.  Of the 22 or so from the second day of injections, most died.  So Mercury was added.

Re: vaccinations.

One of my last coursework papers argued that the government mandating of vaccinations combined with general American distrust of government was what gave space to the anti-vax movement (This was a biopolitics class.  Hence the weirdness.)

My solution was to remove the government mandates and let the pain comeback. Plus it'd take away Jenny McCarthy's crazy arguments.

Fact is we do lots of things more dangerous than vaccination on a regular basis for health even. Life's a tradeoff and I'll take a 1:100,000 chance of getting a vaccine induced problem over the 1:5 chance of dying of diphtheria any day.

(I'm actually on the fence about the chicken pox vaccine, as things go Chickenpox is a fairly harmless illness so the vaccine problem rate quickly approaches the chickenpox problem rate, and there are signs that it's not as effective in the long term as straight up disease, but I'd just kick it to the parents for personal decisions.)

There are a LOT of 1918 deaths, all from that flu.

I once went through a cemetary in the gold country of California, where of course everyone came as adults. Average age at death (ca. 1870 or so): 45. That explains why Victorian novels (e.g., Dickens) contain so many references to orphans. Late marriage + early death = buttload of orphans.

335 Er, no. There's a strong link between having chickenpox and then later in life developing shingles.

Posted by: GnuBreed at May 15, 2013 11:25 PM (ccXZP)

True, but IIRC the chickenpox vaccine doesn't prevent against shingles. It's been a while since I've read the data, but if memory serves it was having some crap out around 25 years post vaccination and boosters were iffy propositions for various reasons and vaccinations aren't 100% protection against a disease.

Shingles is a weird bird in that it cause is the chicken pox virus's ability to lay dormant in nerve cells.  So last time I looked at the data the running theory was the vaccine prevented chickenpox full blown disease but the virus could still make it to the nerve cells.

Now the makeup of these vaccines changes quite often, and they might have switched from a live virus to a dead virus or vice versa or whatever that may have helped the longevity of it and it's ability to protect against shingles later in life (plus there's not the shingles vaccine).  In either case, I'd stand by my original decision, discuss the options with a trained medical profession, weigh the pros and cons and make the choice.

They have the Asgard's home galaxy to look around in, as well. I don't claim the ability to write a winning script, but I could write a thousand plotlines for that, and most of them wouldn't suck.

377 There are some who think amnesty may actually be able to pass in the distraction caused by scandals showing the government is a vast unfathomable body not always to be trusted to do what it says it will do--i.e.m follow rules itself, as well as enforce them upon the people. My personal advice is the pols--those with any integrity, which is probably precious few--is that they need to take their "future election considerations" hat off and put their "statesmenship" hat on. They can bring about a national dissolution with their tomfoolery, and it is about time they realized it. We are in this situation because the government said it would prevent illegal immigration and never truly bothered. Bad faith. Perhaps, then, in this season of government bad faith being made apparent,it should only concern itself with that border secural, and leave everything else be, unless it just wishes to further reinforce the quite real and growing consideration that the Anti-Federalists were right--that the nation should not have been founded with a vigorous central government, bevause it would inevitably devolve into a tyranny. This is not the time to ram through something that, if it turns ill, will leave a critical mass of the populace feeling no recourse but to arms. Sometimes, pols need to realize their limitations. This is one of those times.

As an add-on, on one of the reasons why I have always been against comprehensive immigration reform--because I have always intuitively known that just as animus and a group-think culture drove IRS workers to discriminate agaist some citizens, so the current zeitgest of political correctness (and animus and group-think culture) would cause government to discriminate for illegals and against native-born, even though there would be no historical basis/rationale for justification. You simply would not be able to trust the government not to tilt the scales in a race-based spoils system, as has been seen often in cities now majority-minority, such as Detroit. Because the government would, and does.

Probably too late, as usual, but ....

A month or so ago, sitting in the reception area of the dentist's office while waiting for my teeth cleaning, I glanced at the WSJ.  Said to the wife:  "well, it's been 6 months or so since I actually looked at a 'newspaper', so let's have some fun".

Front-page story about re-emergence of pertussis (whooping cough) in Amerikkka.  I say:  "OK, let's see how long it takes them to bring up the main issue - illegal immigration - if they even do!".

Yep.   Somewhere deep on the jump page, about paragraph 48, there is a grossly misleading allusion to "most cases being reported near the border areas of CA and TX" or something like that.  No reference - none - to why that might be the case.  Perhaps the asteroids impacting the Earth that carry the pertussis bacterium all are hitting near the unsecured border with Mexico?

I think this was the same day that the LAPD directed its entire Central Division, all personnel, to don gloves and masks when dealing with EVERYONE they interacted with in their area.  Reason:  pertussis near-epidemic.

Folks, I know I'm not the only one who says it, but just step back for a second and really consider just how deeply dumbed-down, unserious, and broken the US is, as a civil society.  Racism and lawlessness are such absolute elevated values and priorities that we will literally permit public health crises to develop instead of dealing with the obvious - and easily managed - causes.    Last year I got my tetanus booster.  Nurse at the CVS mini-clinic (why the fuck aren't such things thick as tattoo-parlors on commercial streets, thus lowering typical/normal medical visit costs dramatically and emptying emergency rooms and returning SOME rational pricing and supply dynamics to health care delivery?) says matter of factly - "you really ought to get the DPT, even though you're an adult, as this pertussis thing is really taking off in SoCal thanks to the illegal immigration chaos".  I say OK.

So there's the arguably best national newspaper, with a front page story on a serious topic, that cannot begin to "report" on it accurately and usefully, because - racism, lawlessness, idiocy.

Oh, and I haven't seen a "newspaper" since then, other than this morning, same dentist's office, when I barely had time to scan a jaw-dropping A7 article claiming that CA has a $1 billion budget surplus.  WTF?  Right.  A budget that was deep in the red even WITH ridiculous and material shenanigans, book-cooking, and unlawful transfers and "borrowings" is suddenly in the black?

We are SO far through the looking glass, that a lifelong guvamint sector nerd like myself now doesn't even consider taking something like an official budget announcement seriously.  Twenty years ago, they were serious and subject to no more than the expected and minimal gaming.  Now?  North Korean statistics are equally plausible.

The "Whole House Cooling System" is a valid option. you can brace in the diameter with plywood. Just make sure your roof eve vents to the outside are a min of 14X14 inches or you will not have effective venting and ALL your windows must be open when you fire up the fan for best effect....at about dusk most days....

606 Fan units pull cubic feet equivalents, not squares.

614 Oh! *gasp* Harry Reid's crawl spaces are mostly empty. If by mostly you mean he can still bury then horizontally. And if by can you mean does and shallow.

616 re "Joe Biden and the Great Chocolate Cannon:" At first I read: "The 27 year old second grader was thrilled with Biden's response." Takes one to know one?

617 Loooonnngg-time lurker stepping out of the shadows. First, the qualifiers: 1) this is one of my favorite sites, and 2) the commenters here are outstanding. That said this comment board can be a fucking echo chamber sometimes. I'm no Jenny McCarthy fan, but how about just a little critical thought about the effectiveness of vaccines. Please try to explain the astronomical increase in the prevalence of autism. The increase is staggering to a degree that the standard trope of "doctors can just detect it better" doesn't hold up. At the bare minimum, it is completely appropriate to question the aggressive vaccine schedule. Look at how many vaccines are recommended by the medical establishment MANY of whom are in the hip pocket of the pharmaceutical industry.

619 House on vaccinations:

620 Wow. Nice link. Dialogue from an overrated TV show really cuts to the heart of the issue. I mean the fictional didn't even address what the hell Thbimerosal is doing in any vaccine. Nothing to see her folks; Dr. House has cleared it all up. Whether you vaccinate or not, it's pretty shortsighted to think one side of the debate is armed with Science and Logic while the other is speculation. It's also interesting that pro-vaccine folks resort to emotion, fear, and You Don't Want To Kill Your Kid-type appeals.
