Overnight Open Thread (5-19-2013)
— Maetenloch

End of the weekend for some, just another day for others, but all are welcome at the ONT party.

Eurovision 2013

So the Eurovision song contest just finished and Danish singer Emmelie de Forest won with her song, Only Tears.

The contest has been going on for 57 years and in it a single singer/group from each country compete for votes. It's mainly European countries and Israel although some North African countries have participated.

Here a roundup of all the 2013 entries. Interestingly most of the songs are in English.

Mark Steyn on the Panopticon State

What happens when you gave money to Romney and President Obama calls you out publicly? Well this:

Miss Strassel wrote that on April 26, 2012. Five weeks later, one of the named individuals, Frank VanderSloot, was informed by the IRS that he and his wife were being audited. In July, he was told by the Department of Labor of an additional audit over the guest workers on his cattle ranch in Idaho. In September, he was notified that one of his other businesses was to be audited. Mr. VanderSloot, who had never previously been audited, attracted three in the four months after being publicly named by el Presidente. More to the point he attracted that triple audit even though Miss Strassel explicitly predicted in America's biggest-selling newspaper that this was exactly what the Obama enforcers were going to do. The "separate, sinister entity" of the government of the United States went ahead anyway. What do they care? If some lippy broad in the papers won't quit her yapping about it, they can always audit her, too - as they did to Miss Strassel's sometime colleague Anne Hendershott, a sociology professor who got rather too interested in Obamacare and wrote about it in the Journal and various small Catholic publications. The IRS summoned Professor Hendershott to account for herself, and forbade her husband from accompanying her, even though they filed jointly. She ceased her political writing.

A year after he was named to the Obama Dishonor Roll, the feds have found nothing on Mr. VanderSloot, but they have caused him to rack up 80 grand in legal bills. This is what IRS defenders (of whom there are more than there ought to be) mean when they assure us that the system worked: Yes, some rich guy had to blow through the best part of six figures fending off the bureaucrats, but it's not like his body was found in a trunk at the airport or anything, if you know what I mean, Kimmy baby.

Frank-Vandersloot

Trust, Rationality, and MAD in American Politics

Our system is quite resilient - but only up to a point. And once you go beyond that point the usual assumptions and restraints no longer operate.

There is another danger facing Republicans which the National Journal doesn't directly address. It can be described thus: if the scandals go too far at unearthing the administration's rot then even the most craven Republicans will be compelled to do something about it. Like a man in a saloon card game who's caught someone cheating at cards either they call him out and take what comes or pretend the game is still honest. It's either ignore the cheating or get ready to clear leather.

What the scandals have done to Washington is taken the former process of horse-trading  perilously close to a zero-sum game. Each new revelation bolsters the belief that the administration has already done precisely what the Republicans don't want to do: gone for for big brass ring.  Gone for world domination. There are a lot of suggestive indicators. They've politicized the IRS, Treasury, Justice - maybe even the defense department.  Maybe they've already opted for the zero sum game - with themselves as the winners.
There is still some way to go until things become crystal clear; a brief space in which to make certain about what is really going on.  Like a scan or ultrasound or biopsy you're waiting on. For once we know the knowledge will bind us. There are dangerous lines to cross, which once traversed make it is hard to go back. Would that the administration's minions had thought that way. The structures of the Republic were designed to make stark choices unnecessary. Permanent power is a chalice no one should want to drink from. Once that cup is tasted something very wicked this way comes.

Sweet Lies

The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states.

- Barack Obama, then still a candidate for the US Senate in Illinois, in his keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston, July of 2004.
"Congressman: IRS asked pro-life group about 'the content of their prayers.'"

10 Well Known Facts That Aren't True

Including the one that men think about sex every 7 seconds:

In 2011, researchers at Ohio State University found that college-age men thought about sex about 19 times a day, or once every 4,547 seconds.

The study corrected the damaging stereotype that men are far more sex-obsessed than women. While women recorded about half as many sex thoughts as men, they also thought less about other basic biological needs like eating and sleeping. Overall, gender was a poor predictor of how often a person thinks about sex; emotional attitude and comfort level with sex were both more indicative.

Too Handsome for Saudi Arabia

And that will get you deported:

... at the festival in the capital Riyadh, several Saudi religious police men stormed the UAE pavilion on Sunday and evicted three Emirati young men because "they are too handsome," according to the Saudi news website Elaph. [...]

"A festival official said the three Emiratis were taken out on the grounds they are too handsome and that the Commission members feared female visitors could fall for them," the news service said, adding that the festival's management took urgent measures to deport the three to Abu Dhabi.

3 So, I got a buddy in the service who works with the Wounded Warrior people. Last night, he went out with a couple of guys that they’d helped to tie one on. They called a cab, and as they were walking out of the bar to the cab they got rousted by an asshole cop making noises about running them in for public intoxication. Buddy is trying to reason with the cop, who says “Well, your pal here really doesn’t seem steady on his feet at all”. “Pal” reached down, pulls up his pants legs to reveal both his prosthetics and says “That’s because I got both my FUCKING legs blown off in FUCKING Afghanistan, OFFICER.” Much backpedaling, apologizing and “Thank you for your sacrifice”ing from the cop later, they got in the cab and went home.

71 Good evening once again, my fair morons.

I recently published a children's novel called "My Teachers are Zombies!" (as highlighted on the Sunday Book Thread several weeks ago.)

It's the nice story of three friends who discover their teacher is a zombie who is trying to make their brains bigger so as to eat them later (with a dash of pepper).

I would like to encourage people to read the sample provided on the Amazon page (available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKJ70AW) and if it catches your interest, please feel free to purchase it or gift it to a friend!

I double edited it as well, to avoid the common spelling and grammar mistakes that plague most first time writers (of course, mentioning that guarantees at least two errors will crop up in this message). I also made sure there was a bit of light foreshadowing, use of Chekov's gun, and lamp-shading. Additionally, it's a self-contained story, not a series, which appeals to me in an era of unnecessary trilogies and sequels.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

75 I have to admit that I like living in Pennsylvania. We get a little bit of every kind of weather, but not too much of anything. There have been a couple of EF0 tornadoes in recent years, and I saw some shingle damage, large tree limbs down, and signs knocked over.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 19, 2013 10:25 PM (d0bTF) I think they're done, they're just waiting so see if some of the screaming lunatics will ragequit and uninstall. Probably not because about 95% of their screaming issues are about wanting to force *other people* to do something, not wanting to do something themselves. They are just *livid* that anyone has the temerity to not want to lose all the time they put in. Or just play the game and not worry about what others are doing. How *dare* they!

Her son  (B___) is 20. As I'm trying to think how to respond, she sends:

"In front of his gf and several friends. B___ would have been there except worked late...thank god!"

Posted by: Tom In Korea (author of My Teachers are Zombies, buy it on Amazon.com!) at May 19, 2013 10:34 PM (oJkTX) In short, there are multiple currencies in the game. One of them, "astral diamonds," has an in-game economy the players participate in that reacts to player's choices. An exploit (or two or three) allowed some people to gather vast amounts of it and it has distorted the market. So they have to fix the exploit (and ban those players' accounts). There is a "wipe cabal" that is demanding *all* players' progress be erased because that would be "fair" in some kind of twisted, Harrison Bergeron sense. The game company has said since the second stage of the Beta (open beta) that this would not happen. The Bergies are flooding the forums with long-winded, badly-spelled posts threatening to quit, call the BBB, or file criminal charges (I wish I was joking) if *everyone* isn't forced to start over. And we wonder how the world gets so jacked up?

115 For young person mental illness, yeah, if you make it past 25 you're clear. Of course, you could start with early onset dementia in your mid-40s. But you get about 20 years of healthy brain -- unless you fry it with drugs and booze. Families used to keep these horrible events quieter, but they've always happened. New a kid who blew his brains out in high school. I was in the same circle of friends with his older sister. He was a normal, if a bit dorky, kid. Played board games and card games with him a couple times when a group of us hung out at their house. Nice kid. Smart. Rumor was a girl rejected him and he went nutso. Never got the full story.

143 The difficulty is that the restraint does not so far seem symmetric. *** The left has spent the time since the fall of the Soviet Union creating a mythology where in Utopia is just around the corner if conservatives could just be eliminated. In 2008 we saw the left manage to get extremist national socialists elected, and we are seeing that mythology put in practice. The only thing that might stop the left is the fear that we would respond in kind, but every time they have pushed the boundaries we've done nothing. Al Gore tried to steal an election, we did nothing. The media created fake TANG documents to take down the President, and we did nothing. The left spent years trying to force us to the lose the war, and we did nothing. And on and on and on. The left will not stop until we respond in kind, and the current Republican party is to craven, to stuck in habit, to do anything more then what they've done unsuccessfully for decades...

144 Regarding the MAD theory--What do I think Obama and crowd really are doing, intentionally, consciously? Herding the Indians onto reservations. Putting Jews in ghettos. So forth. They'll regret the means later on, they know that, not quite kosher and all, really wrong in a sense, but hey, it is something that they finally have the mass for, and America was founded with ignoble means, after all, and the time has simply come for the next chapter of American history. The entirely Progressive one. But it is always good to remember that the best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley. Very agley.

I mean, they didn't make a free-to-play game as a community service assignment, they are a business. The idea behind a F2P game is that you can play most or all of the game without paying actual cash - but you might pay cash for some nice bonuses or additional content, and that's how they make money and can still say it's free.

166 Zen costs really money, but you can also get Zen by trading in Astral Diamonds for it.  So you can earn it or pay for it.  A nice system for users and the game's owners, if implemented correctly and appropriately.

Families used to keep these horrible events quieter, but they've always happened. New a kid who blew his brains out in high school. I was in the same circle of friends with his older sister. He was a normal, if a bit dorky, kid. Played board games and card games with him a couple times when a group of us hung out at their house. Nice kid. Smart.

Back when I was newly commissioned and heading for Fort Bliss, TX, I reconnected with an old friend from middle school.  It turns out that in the middle of college he was rejected by a girl and had a nervous breakdown and ended up back with his parents.  We kept in touch via email for a few months, and then he suddenly stopped returning emails.

When I was back in Portland last year I thought about visiting his folks to see if they could put me in touch with him, but I didn't because I was worried about what I might learn.

250 "The Times They Are A-Changin'"

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

*only had to remove one verse to update to today*

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

The exploit itself is probably fixed.  Its probably the rollback and tracking down all the violators that is the problem.  They likely need to get the violators information before doing the rollback.  And maybe they actually are trying to figure out when people first started doing the exploit.

266 @253

Only tangentially.

If we value our country we have to do something.

Change is not going to come in the form of a Reagan like figure on a white horse.

The GOP, Democrats and the MSM will not allow such a figure to emerge.

Change is going to come in the form of boot up the ass's of our supposed leaders.

We are 17 trillion dollars in debt, we have the IRS targeting us and a MSM media fully on-board with the regime.

And worst of all the GOP does not care to fight.

Nothing we do or say will make them.

It's time for as the progressives say, direct action, get in their faces - let them know what's what.

We are the change we have been waiting for.

283 A couple of years ago I saw a graph that charted at what age men committed suicide. There were 3 definite peaks, 15-22ish, mid 40's, and mid to late 60's. Most every one that I have know that have committed suicide did so in those age groups, but when you look at men's lives, those are when the "fuckitall" things happen. The 15-22 year olds are going through hormone changes, so that is when unrequited love issues happen, then the pressure of going out to the real world. Mid 40's. Fuck, you just lost your job, you have kids in high school, so you ain't moving for your new job, and the Mrs has decided that the she would rather have the local tennis pro's balls in her court. BTW, don't worry about seeing the kids, because she doesn't want them to go to your shitty apartment. Mid 60's. Fuck, now I am retired. What the hell am I doing to do for the next 20 years. I can't pop a viagra every time I want to rub one out, plus do I really have enough money to live on. And finally, screw it, my body hurts and all I am going to get from Obamacare is half of an aspirin. http://tinyurl.com/b3l4cko

I agree the system needs to be reformed, just not as a distraction from the criminality. If they get away with it, they'll just keep doing it through other channels.

do you think prosecution must come to completion before reform?  By then, the iron will have cooled, I think.  Seems to me both criminal prosecutions and reform should be in tandem, reinforcing one another . . . linked.

401 >> Full throated agreement from me regarding aggressive criminal prosecution as well; from the top to the bottom - no one should get a pass.

Actually, viking, there is another possibility that might work out even better -- No prosecutions.

That might finally start convincing people that the system is irrepairably broken and that gubmint must be reined in. Because if no one is responsible and held accountable, then the system itself is in need of junking.

Seems to me both criminal prosecutions and reform should be in tandem, reinforcing one another . . . linked. Posted by: viking at May 20, 2013 02:23 AM (AaIjD) I think reform will distract from prosecutions. The left is always blaming the system. Basically I don't trust the system at all, reforms are irrelevant if the crooks are still in charge. Also, tax reform is 28 different angry factions fighting, I don't trust that to be settled in the next decade *at all*. I think if it's linked to prosecutions, even in a publicity sense, it will be a boat anchor and not a driver of reform. The only risk is that prosecutions will create a false sense that the Long Marchers have been driven out and the system is trustworthy.

Posted by: viking at May 20, 2013 02:32 AM (AaIjD) I think it's a smaller risk than tying it to reform, which will IMHO be a death spiral of competing variations and leftist subject-changing. They can scream fairness all day on tax law changes, and rally their FSA. The best they can do on IRS criminality is lie and try to change the subject.

Our betters had decided they need more money.  The house wanted $1.4B and gov Marky and his senate dweebs wanted $1.8B in new taxes.

So, the DFL compromised with itself; and are trying to raise them $2.1B instead.

They are screwing "the rich."  9.85% on the upper 2%.

Brand New Taxes on warehouse and commodity storage.

Gonna Screw the smokers (not rich people) another couple of bucks per pack.

Black Helicopters now have to take a back seat to "Bitter Truth!"

The line has been crossed, words are of far less import to ever try to"Calmly explain"...this "Misconception." RINOS are digging bunkers now in which to hide...

Shit folks...they are using less and less energy in the "Smoke and Mirrors"department on an almost daily basis.  It is as if that tipping point of "Self Awareness" has been reached and they WANT us to know in full what the plan is......They are so sure that now is the time to make us all fearful of the power they think they now posess that they make no bones about their agenda any longer because.........WE LOST....THEY WON!!!!

I think those of us that wish to keep this country in any kind of condition that resembles America have some tough choices to make and sooner than later it would seem.

Tonight, after getting home from another E.R shift,  and prior to this post, I looked in on my sleeping kiddo's and all snozzin away...a question....

"What are we leaving them?"

What indeed.....

night all
