Bookworm: The IRS Scandal is the Worst Political Scandal in American History

And she makes a good case that it is. I can't think of any other scandal where the government actually engaged in widespread extra-legal stifling of dissent on ideological grounds.

Ignore all that. The absolute worst scandal that's emerged lately, and the worst administration scandal in American history is the IRS scandal. Why? Because you, the People, became the targets of a comprehensive federal government effort to stifle dissent, one made using the government's overwhelming and disproportionate policing and taxing powers.

All of the other scandals, going back to Andrew Johnson's post-Civil War scandals, Warren G. Harding's 1920s Teapot Dome scandal, Nixon's Watergate, Reagan's Iran-Contra, and Clinton's Oval Office sexcapades have actually been narrowly focused acts of cronyism, garden-variety political chicanery, or personal failings. It's been insider stuff.

The IRS scandal, by contrast, is a direct attack on the American people. Right now, Progressives throughout America are pretending that this scandal doesn't matter: "Obama wasn't involved." "Tea Partiers had it coming because they're all corrupt." "Obama would have won the election anyway." "It was just a coincidence that the only groups that had their applications scrutinized, sometimes for years, were politically conservative. It means nothing that, when one group changed its name to sound Progressive, its application was approved in only three weeks." "This is just a bureaucratic snafu." "It's a few rogue agents in Ohio."

And whenever you see illegal thuggery, be sure and look for the union label. No doubt the NTEU's 94% donation rate to Democrats is completely irrelevant to how they would treat conservatives as IRS employees.

Or maybe not. And clearly they're not willing to go after these known tax scofflaws.

So if the president and the NTEU are colluding to punish their enemies, do we have any recourse at all?

Don't Poke the Bear

And as DC law firm Patton Boggs is learning you can only file bogus environmental lawsuits against Chevron on your own initiative so many times before the bear notices.

Since late 2010, Washington, D.C. law firm Patton Boggs has been poking a sleeping tiger. It has filed three peculiar federal lawsuits - in its own name, not on behalf of any client - against Chevron, the third-largest corporation in the United States. These cases have fared poorly; two were quickly dismissed, and a federal magistrate judge recommended tossing the third in March.

On Friday, the tiger awoke. Chevron (CVX) sought a federal judge's permission to bring counterclaims against the 455-lawyer firm for alleged fraud and deceit for its conduct in representing the Amazon Defense Front, which obtained a $19 billion environmental judgment against the oil giant in Lago Agrio, Ecuador, in February 2011. Chevron also seeks to charge the firm with "malicious prosecution" for having pursued its three lawsuits in bad faith. Chevron seeks to hold the law firm liable for any damages Chevron suffers from the Front's allegedly fraud-infested litigation, plus punitive and treble damages.

The Wit and Wisdom of Nancy Pelosi

Just remember that for four years she was Speaker of the House and only a VP away from becoming President.

. Unemployment benefits are the best form of economic development.
. The IRS admission it illegally targeted conservative groups is the fault of the Supreme Court.
. We have to pass the bill (ObamaCare) to see what's in it.
. Every week we don't pass a Stimulus package, 500 million Americans lose their jobs.
. I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels.
. We don't have a spending problem.
. The CIA misleads us all the time.
. Enforcing immigration laws is un-American.

To Ask the Question Is To Answer It

Charles C. W. Cooke wonders why those who freaked out about the PATRIOT Act and how it might lead to people's library records being seized aren't so concerned about the IRS asking conservative groups to hand over their Facebook posts and a list of books they were reading. Or for records of conversations they had or their positions on issues. Shouldn't the ACLU be as up in arms about the IRS's intrusion into people's privacy as they were about Homeland Security looking at suspected terrorist's use of library computers?

The Utter Shamelessness of Candy Crowley

She's back to claiming that Obama was late in calling the Benghazi attacks terrorism - just like she claimed before the debates.

But in fact, Crowley's own news agency, CNN, had reported that Obama called the attacks at Benghazi terrorism "for the first time" only on September 20, nine days after the attacks.

Crowley herself also reported that the President was recalcitrant in calling it terrorism. As it happens her inexplicable and unwarranted support of Obama on the debate stage contradicted her own reporting on Benghazi.

In September, only a few weeks before the debate, Crowley had said on CNN that Obama took 17 days to give a "sort of definitive statement" that terrorists orchestrated the attacks.

By February of 2013, and conveniently after the election, the co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, Frank Fahrenkopf, admitted that Crowley was simply wrong about her assertion that Obama called the attacks an act of terror.

In even a moderately just world she would be shunned by every decent journalist in the field.

The World's Least and Most Racially Tolerant Countries

Anglo and Latin countries are the most tolerant - and India, Jordan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong are the least.

Remember when Gandhi was asked what he thought about Western civilization, and he snarkily replied that it would be a good idea? Back atcha, Mohandas.

Yeah Gandhi was great at witty snark - building an actual working multi-racial tolerant society not so much.

14 I don't know that it's a scandal (although certainly it should've been), but the only thing bigger than this is the suppresion of political dissidents during WWI.  Read, e.g., "The Making of a Radical" by Scott Nearing.  The utter abuse of power by Woodrow Wilson has been documented in such books as "Liberal Fascism" by Jonah Goldberg.   Nearing's book, however,  is not only first-person, but no-one would ever mistake Nearing for a man of the Right.

77 According to the Salon article, Bush targeted the NAACP and a couple others. I vaguely remember this. What do you guys know about it?

Posted by: Pastorius

Did any of the Bush directors admit on tape to selectively targeting leftie groups?

Nope.

Was there a set of official documents describing the targeting by the Bush IRS?

Nope.

Was there a demonstrable pattern and practice with in the Bush administration of targeting liberal groups for extra scrutiny?

Nope.

They have anecdotes. We have admissions and facts.

Further, the 'BOOOSH did it' claim is invidious comparison, the standard logical fallacy of the Left.

What is the standard? That of their worst enemy, Bush? If so, they admit the Obama administration is guilty of dangerous and unconstitutional practices because that is exactly the charge they leveled at Bush routinely.

92 Totally unrelated and light-hearted -- WWE now has a WWE app where they show videos during commercial breaks. Sometimes interviews, backstage segments. Other times it's the in-ring action going on during commercial. They've even started showing stuff during the matches, so there's two potential things to watch at once. It's the "second screen experience", you're supposed to watch it on your phone or tablet. I wonder what the advertisers think about WWE telling their viewers to ignore commercials and watch some WWE video during the commercial break. Oh, and Mr. Perfect's son debuted tonight -- Curtis Axel. Well, redebuted. They tried him with a different name a few years ago but that didn't work. I'm watching it to avoid watching the news about OK.

oops.  found the funding on wiki

Each national team is responsible for its own expenses and most surveys are financed by local sources. However, central funding has been obtained in cases where local funding is not possible. Presently, the activities of the WVS Secretariat and WVS Executive Committee are funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. Other funding has been obtained from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Volkswagen Foundation, the German Science Foundation (DFG) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From wiki answers...for whatever it's worth...

Mahatma Gandhi, the proponent of civil disobedience, was born a Hindu in 1869 and practiced Hinduism all his life. He always believed in compassion, nonviolence, and the Golden Rule of "treat others as you want them to treat you." He believed strongly in the Hindu principle of ahimsa which means non - violence. Mahatma Gandhi has come to be known as the Father of India and a beacon of light in the last decades of British Colonial Rule, promoting non-violence, justice and harmony between people of all faiths all of which he learnt form the religion of Hinduism.

However, Gandhi once told "I am a Hindu, Muslim and Christian" as well. He was also influenced by Jainism.

191 " Then the girl told him it would be10 cents forcoffee and 5 cents for a donut."

This has been beat to death, those were war time regulations imposed by the Army on the Red Cross at the request of the allies.  The reasons behind the rules are bizarre, but not due the Red Cross.  Most of the guys expected free coffee, etc. because that's what the Red Cross distributed stateside, but once they got into the European theater they had to pay.

I have seen reports of both free and payment required from the Pacific, I suspect it was imposed when mixed with Commonwealth troops.

192 122 The increasing diversity of America is the main reason all the measures of corruption are rising. Diversity is great for interesting music and food. Not so good for honest government.
Reality is ethnic diversity is an excellent predictor for corruption, bribery, govt abuse, etc, etc.
The most honest countries with the least corruption are generally also the most ethnically homogenous.
--------------------------

All very true. The 'Diversity is good' idiots always hint, if not out state, that one culture is as good (desirable) as another. It is taught in the schools (COEXIST!). I usually casually ask if they believe that applies to those countries where the culture is dominated by Islamic law.

The U.S. is one of the most diverse nations on the planet. Going with ethnicities, we've had a solid blend since before the Civil War. We tend to be one of the best-functioning as well. I'd like to see a nation even a third the U.S.' size that can compete in that manner.

205 It's just human nature. As ethnic diversity increases, some ethnic groups get an advantage by bending the rules in favor of their ethnic kinsman. If that group is small, the majority can ignore it and still stick to an honest govt ethos. But as the majority shrinks, more groups decide to copy the corrupt cheater groups and cheat for their family, cousins, ethnic kin. Eventually anybody who isn't corrupt starts feeling like a sucker. Why be the only honest bureaucrat? Why let your family suffer while everybody else is cheating and taking bribes and being corrupt? Corruption spreads like an infectious disease. And once it hits a critical mass it's really hard to stop.

227 Well, until recently America was 80-85% white. Now that "white" category was a blend of euro ethnic groups. But basically a new "white" category got invented by combining them. This was done, of course, at the expense of black people for the first 200 years of America. Also the most corrupt parts of America were the big cities where there was still large "ethnic white" pockets and where people voted for their tribe -- Irish, Italian, Polish, whatever. This had a lot to do with those groups being Catholic and so the melting pot was slower with them than with previous white protestants. The most honest local and state governments in the US have historically been in New England (outside of Boston) and the upper midwest. These regions also tended to be more ethnically homogenous. The scandis in the upper midwest are honest people. But even scandis won't stay honest forever if they keep seeing their family and friends screwed over by other ethnic groups.

265 Don't really have a solution. Other than slowing immigration so the melting pot can work through the existing population. Also getting rid of any govt benefits like affirmative action for any and all ethnic groups. Hispanics used to want to become "white" but now there are benefits to holding on to ethnic difference. Now obviously white people search for any hint of non-white identity to claim govt and societal benefits. Large scale immigration worked when the melting pot worked. It no longer does, so immigration now brings balkanization and corruption.

They had to take their own cloth napkins to use all weekend. All food was healthy, nothing pre-packaged. the s'mores were low fat sugar free. There was no sugar or cream for the mom's coffee in the mornings. All the crafts had to be done with recycled materials, they weren't allowed to bring any craft that was made up of new materials.

If anybody is interested, Ace did NOT do all his homework on his "Doctored email" thread, and will probably wish he had.  I was happy to "finish it up", but was late to the party (see the last couple of comments, where I have tracked down the exact quotes).

My own read on it is that the true "undoctored" version is a single email from a staffer at the WH who is basically saying, in bureaucrat-speak, that POTUS is unhappy with how this makes it sound like his campaign points are crap, so go back and do it over.

So it actually points to the WH as the real source of the talking point revisions, the way I read it. I would like to hear other morons opinions. It wouldn't be the first time that journalists missed the main point (such as missing that "you didn't build that" was tantamount to a socialist manifesto, not simply a slap in the face to small business).

286
Good evening once again, my fair morons.  I scored a purchase today, although I don't know if that was from a moron or just delightful happenstance.

I recently published a children's novel called "My Teachers are Zombies!"

It's the nice story of three friends who discover their teacher is a zombie who is trying to make their brains bigger so as to eat them later (with a dash of pepper).

I would like to encourage people to at least read the sample provided on the Amazon page (available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKJ70AW) and if it catches your interest, please feel free to purchase it or gift it to a friend!

I double edited it as well, to avoid the common spelling and grammar mistakes that plague most first time writers (of course, mentioning that guarantees at least two errors will crop up in this message). I also made sure there was a bit of light foreshadowing, use of Chekov's gun, and lamp-shading. Additionally, it's a self-contained story, not a series, which appeals to me in an era of unnecessary trilogies and sequels.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

This has gone up significantly since the change in immigration laws and increased ethnic diversity. This is a fact. I'm not saying any ethnic group is bad or evil or ... whatever you read into what I wrote. I'm just analyzing the situation. I'm not saying certain groups are inherently corrupt. And the 99% Mexican border towns in Texas have some of the lowest crime rates in America. I would argue the ethnic homogeneity is part of the reason why.

324 I'm not remotely close to the original protestant English founding populations. So I'm not advocating some racial nativism. The cultural heritage of the WASPs -- especially the honest, good govt, anti-corruption, and equality under the law traditions are ones I'm proud to be a cultural, if not biological, inheritor of. I'm just explaining why America has gotten more corrupt. And probably will continue to do so. Same with europe. The Democrats modern coalition is largely based on race and ethnicity. Some simple analysis of voting behavior shows that's true. There's a reason the Democrats dismiss everything Repub as "white". Because it works.

Apparently the Girl Scouts are all in on the liberal wet dream agenda--the use of any prayers mentioning "Lord" or "God" was banned, so the grace at meal times was about giving back to the mother river (WTF???) They had to take their own cloth napkins to use all weekend. All food was healthy, nothing pre-packaged. the s'mores were low fat sugar free. There was no sugar or cream for the mom's coffee in the mornings. All the crafts had to be done with recycled materials, they weren't allowed to bring any craft that was made up of new materials. I didn't say any group was better than any other. Or worse. Learn some history. Learn how other societies with a great deal of ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity behave. They tend to be very corrupt with the various tribal groups constantly abusing each other and engaging in self-dealing. I explained how the pre-1968 large scale immigration in the US avoided that -- and that included the great evils of slavery and Jim Crow. The good of the melting pot that worked so well for white euro immigrants came with an extreme downside if you were in that black minority. whatev, enjoy your rage-boner

Yeah going to have to disagree with you there. My life experience was probably radically different than yours though, and I don't think people take that much into account. It's easier to squirm, dance and yell than accept people can get "rubbed the wrong way" one too many times and...well... then it becomes easier to just "deal with your own".
Posted by: CAC at May 20, 2013 10:31 PM (Y993C)

We like to think that diversity is completely good and cost-free but it's not. There have been multiple studies showing that that higher diversity in an area is associated with lower social trust and social cohesion.

Now that doesn't mean that *on the whole* diversity isn't good but we do have to acknowledge that one of its downsides is a certain amount of 'cultural friction' and loss of social trust. But normally as long as everyone feels part of a larger culture it can be counter-acted. But if you get too much Balkanization and alienation, then it can tip things over into a 'low trust' society.

At the time, just as a matter of interest, I checked Sam Daschle's home state of SD, found 26 school teams named 'Warriors'. Why here? Our Congressman was a thorn in Clinton's side. That's what happens when totalitarians take control. Early, small example of what is happening now.

I'm lovin' the CVX thing, because I love Chevron. I plunked some money into 3 stocks about 8 yrs ago, and not only has it done the best, but it's dividend is pretty nice, and increases at a very rapid clip. I don't pay enough attention, but I get the impression that they're especially innovative in finding oil. They also do the most geothermal, IIRC, which seems to make sense in certain applications, vs the usual uneconomical eco-Nazi nonsense.

In contrast, my ConocoPhillips has been more restrained. That's partly because Hugo Chavez stole some of my assets a few years back (the other guys were smarter about it). Then they invested a lot with the Ruskies in NatGas, before the big finds in the US that made the price plummet. Lastly, I saw quotes where the CEO was spewing eco-nonsense, which is unforgiveable.  At least they spun of PSX for me, which has doubled in less than a year.

389 102 I've never given a dime to the Red Cross, in honor of my father. There he was in Germany in WWII, earning a Presidential Citation for Remagen, in the field for weeks on end. ... Posted by: ajgrennanmsc@gmail.com at May 20, 2013 09:41 PM (kQUFE) Related but OT. I was a huge WWII buff growing up, and I had a book that discussed Remagen. I got a lifelong dream come true by accident a few years ago while in Europe on business. I was driving up the east side lower Rhine on my way to Amsterdam when I came across a couple of big old bridge piers and a couple of "Castles" looking across the river at each other. It was dusk, and while the "castle" on the east side was dark, there were lights on in the one on the west bank. Long story short, it was the Remagen bridge, and I spent a half a day in the museum on the west bank of the Rhine. None of the Europeans could understand my excitement at my find and adventure.

It's really sickening to see the rush to politicize this tragedy, what the hell is wrong with people? Do they think they score political points by being hack assholes? I really fear for our country when there seems to be nothing above "winning one for my team". Unfortunately a well known conservative blogger and analyst couldn't help himself either

BTW, our own Gabriel Malor is originally from OKC and he's a bit worried about folks in the area. I believe that Genghis has folks there and also rdbrewer

The people of Oklahoma have been through this many times and they always bounce right back. They really are "STRONG"

415 260 On behalf of my family, thanks for your well wishes. I've been out pulling rubble off houses in my area since I heard the news. Amazingly the tornado took a path just south of my house, but a lot of my neighbors lost houses, children and pets to this deviation. Kiss your kids tonight folks; ill live a thousand years and not be able to convey the utter helplessness I felt as I watched this thing destroy everything around my children's elementary school. They made it out unscathed, but many of our friends lost everything. Going back to do what I can. Thanks again for what you do here. On the Crowley thing, I looked it up at the time, and Obama did make reference to "acts of terror". That being said, it was ambiguous as to which acts he was specifically speaking. Prior to that part he had spoken of the original 9/11, which multiple attacks itself, and Benghazi. The context did not tell me whether he was speaking of one, the other, or both.

Regardless, nobody came away from that speech saying,. "Holy shit, terrorists attacked our consulate in Bengazi!" It's totally dishonest (shocka!) to go back and claim that that he had said it all along. Romney missed a real opportunity to tear Obama a new one,  but he was (understandably?) confused and let two girls gang up on him.

432 Politicians only can exploit tribal tendencies when there are real tribal differences to exploit. Look at how countries split up. #1 reason is linguistic. People who don't share a language very often don't want to share a country. #2 is religious. People don't like being ruled by somebody with a different religion than them. #3 is ethnic. People prefer to be ruled by someone who looks like them. The average person prefers to be ruled by people who speak the same language, believe in the same god, and share the same ethnicity. It's about trust. People trust other people who are like themselves. Linguistic, religious, and ethnic diversity reduce that trust. Other factors can try to overcome that. But it's hard. And the greater the differences the harder it gets.

So what does it mean? Posted by: Madtom at May 20, 2013 10:50 PM (IyxzF) Americans and those who chose to emigrate here were better off when we used the example of a melting pot. Those who emigrated wanted nothing more than to blend in and have their children blend in. Those emigrating now don't seem to want to blend in, they seem to want to make their fortune here, not become a citizen and go back to their original country. They love he quilt idea, where all the squares are different but form one quilt. The melting pot is better, more inclusive. With the quilt you can reject a square.

Oddly, the 100% Mexican border towns in Mexico are pretty high in crime and corruption. And, no, I wouldn't say that the ethnically homogenous Rio Grande Valley is low in crime and corruption on this side of the border El Paso is, but that's a much bally-hooed anomaly.

The relatively low crime has less to do with homogeneity and more to do with a large law enforcement presence and a desire by the cartels to avoid drawing attention to their operations.

464 I don't have a solution. Brazil has a lot of ethnic diversity -- but little linguistic or religious diversity. Brazil has a very high violent crime rate and is much more corrupt than the US. I think we'll become more like Brazil. I think the English language melting pot still works -- though slower than it used to, much slower for Mexican immigrants. There's good data on English fluency. Mexican and Chinese immigrants have the most trouble. But by the 3rd gen Mexican immigrants fall far behind other groups -- because there are such large Mexican populations and ethno-linguistic enclaves. I think Brazil is a likely future for the US. More violent, more corrupt, more socialist. We have some unique aspects of course. The large scale of South Asian immigration will be interesting to see what effect that has.

Yeah, kind of my point. Actually, El Paso's low crime rate (relative to its size, location and demographic factors like young population) is the subject of a lot of speculation. I'm in the lithium-in-the-water camp.

*sips imported bottled water*

Talking to El Paso Cops as well as some people who worked in intelligence in the area, the general consensus was that the influx of border patrol agents blocked the illegals coming over to break into houses while the cartels kept the local gangs in check.  I think that El Paso's incestuous nature helped as well.  Most everyone who lives there was born there.  They move around the city as they go through life, but it's not like other big cities where you have an influx of young people moving in from elsewhere.

506 Most people seem to use "diversity" as a synonym for non-white. The NBA is called diverse even though it's not at all. It's 90% American black dudes. American whites, hispanics, and asians are all insanely under-represented -- while blacks are vastly over-represented. I've seen people refer to an all-black team as "diverse". Meanwhile an NHL team with 20+ "white" guys from 10 different countries with 12 different native languages is smeared as non-diverse and just some white guys. MLB is the league that most "looks like America" to borrow a Clinton phrase. Yet MLB is routinely berated for not having enough black players -- even though the black % in MLB is above the national avg. Of course, about half the black players in MLB are caribbean and not native-born.

509 All I know about Brazil is this: it's capitol is a hell hole modernist nightmare. Posted by: CAC at May 20, 2013 10:58 PM (Y993C) That pretty much sums up most of the post-WWII/post-Colonial world where pointy-headed intellectuals with a globalist and socialist bent tried to turn them into socialist utopias. I remember an old article called "the tale of two cities" that compared Hong Kong with the capital of some West African country (don't remember the details, might have been Togo, Benin, or Ghana). At the time of the West African nations independence, both it and Hong Kong had similar per capita income. The former received aid and central planning with U.N. help; the later had only the limited government & rule of law ethos of Britain. If people back then could have bet on which country would prosper and which one would have floundered, most would have bet on the West African nation doing well because they were guided by the "scientific" principles of the soft socialists. Unsurprisingly to us, the "guidance" and aid resulted in kleptocracies, war, and poverty, while the later became so prosperous that even Communist China wouldn't interfer with its free-market ways.

523 huh? you missed my point. my point is just that the NBA isn't very "diverse", yet routinely is called so. I'm not saying it's due to any bias on the part of the NBA. The white % has gone down in the NBA over recent decades as the top white athlete kids are steered away from basketball at a young age -- the parents and even the kids often believing they can't make it to the NBA. That's one reason you see so many 6'4, 6'5 white MLB pitchers nowadays. 40 years ago a tall athletic kid like that would be on the basketball team. Now the kid is steered towards being a pitcher, QB, or tight end at a young age. The family logic is why top out as a division 1 college player in basketball when you could have better odds to make millions in pro baseball instead.

Another reason is Basketball dosen't draw in the suburbs. Used to be a kid could be in 3 sports and be cool but no more specialization is happening in or before high school. So kids that may get to be 6 foot plus have already chosen before they hit 6 feet and since white suburban schools get their asses kicked in Basketball that choice is avoided.

I was ferried across the Rhine from tower to tower on the 50th anniversary of the crossing. They had a little concert in the famous tunnel, too. Real interesting acoustics, as it is a brick arch and on a curve. The vast iron doors were open that day; they almost never are.

Out here in Cali a lot of tall white guys end up in volleyball instead of basketball. Blacks are dropping off in baseball because of the influx of spanish players along with the rise of football and basketball. The minor league system scares away a lot of athletes who will feel that they will never make it. Even though the payoff is higher in baseball rather than football. Lack of instant gratification.

557 Team Rubicon RAWKS. That is all! A HUGE part of the black issue in baseball is that they're being financially squeezed out as Travel Ball is such a huge part of kids baseball now. The kids who can afford that have a huge advantage. The Cool Factor is not there, either, but the money is an issue too.

Very Late to the thread.

I agree W/ 14 that Wilson with his WWI anti-sedition sedition pogrom was bad, and possibly worse than the IRS jihad.

And Wilson had the awful and racist distinction of bringing Jim Crow to DC and the Federal Government. He segregated the civil service.  He allowed "Birth of a Nation" to be shown in the White House.  (If you never saw it, it could be subtitled, "How the noble, God fearing, KKK saved White Southern women from the shiftless, violent and sexually over-revved black men."  I was shocked and disgusted when I saw it the first time.)

In other words W Wilson was a typical Democrat.

569 I hope y'all see what I'm getting at. There is a lot of 'white %' this and 'black %' that and 'brown %' the next thing and what does any of that have to do with variety? Which I think was the point of diversity in the first place. Rant off. Cheap scotch chased by cheap wine. Next thing you know I'll want somebody to define racist.

576 Most black NBA guys don't really come from the mean inner city streets like the stereotype. Black NBA players are, compared to the avg black family -- richer, more suburban, more likely to have a father around. There still are the Lebron James single parent poverty guys, of course. 70%+ of black kids grow up without a father, it's just a lower % of NBA players. And Lebron is a freak of nature. Big advantage to a child's young development to have a father with resources around. Better coaching earlier.

Seems like you made two distinctly different points.  I was merely responding to only one of them.

I, and most of us, have come to expect nothing less than what the hard left-driven agenda of the democrats has given us.  But over the years, nay decades, my wishes and expectations of the republicans have lowered to the point where I hold them in almost equal contempt.  They are either utterly feckless or in on the gag.  Choose one or prove me wrong.

We had a Basketball backboard/net of the front of my garage growing up. And we played some form of it till we hit enough guys to make a team to play baseball or football. But the thought was not this game is less fun than Baseball and Football but they were played in the park where mom wasn't able to watch from the kitchen window. And grass parks in the burbs were more plentiful than concrete basketball courts.

597 I'm still waiting for a government form that requests 'Content of Character' rather than 'Race.'

598 lowandslow, it isn't that simple. Well, maybe now, because it is cool now, but there are real reasons why that happened. I worked at a YMCA in Atlanta...I am a huge baseball fan and I tried SO FUCKING hard to get a field resuscitated for very eager boys to play ball. Seemed like such a simple thing. I got donations, we got all kinds of help.... first night, bases stolen. Next thing gone, all our shiny new Louisville Sluggers. Some assholes complained about our fried chicken sponsors. One thing after another and finally we just went back to roundball. Oh, and one of my coaches got arrested, one got shot. (Nothing to do with baseball or the Y!)

599 Rented 'Hating Breitbart' on video on demand this evening. Strongly recommended. Made me miss the guy. A pop culture journalist friend of mine interviewed Breitbart once, said the man gave off this boundless, mile-a-minute kind of energy. We could use that energy now. Thinking about Breitbart makes me think about leadership. I know we on the Right are, for the most part, defined by our individualism but the truth of it is we lack strong leadership. None of the name-brand Republican politicians or media figures (for lack of a better word) seem to have the stuff--the charisma, the savvy, the whatever it takes--to bring us together and set us on a common course. (While it's true that the media-powered Left attempts to destroy charismatic leader-type conservatives as soon as they show themselves, a good leader should--like Breitbart--be able to hold his or her own against a hostile press.) No, I don't believe we should be pining for The Man On The White Horse, which is how the Left views Obama. But given all of the talented, capable people out there on our side of the idea wars, there must be at least one able to pick up where Breitbart left off.

602 The Left believes in "disparate impact". Unless whites get the shaft. And asians. Asian kid has to score 300-400 pts higher on the SAT to have the same odds of getting into an elite college as a black applicant (remember how Michelle Obama said nobody said she'd get into an Ivy cause her test scores weren't high enough?). The reason all the asian kids take test prep? They know they are competing only against the other asian kids for the asian spots. If elite colleges allowed merit-based admission the asian % would double.

651 I like Derbyshire. Interesting guy. And if he's dead to CAC, well, his cancer will probably make that true short enough. You can wish him dead all you want, but cancer got there first. I find him an excellent writer with an interesting mind. But yeah, Derbyshire with his Chinese wife and half-asian kids has been officially declared an un-person by all of the Left and much of the Right. Someone coined a term, perhaps Derbyshire, the "Dark Enlightenment". The Dark Enlightement is all those things that are true -- but which the ruling class has declared to be official UnTruths, regardless of evidence. A lot of the Dark Enlightenment is about human biodiversity and gender differences -- as in genetic, biological differences. A simple example is the zealots who insist there is no such thing as race -- even though I could give a blind DNA test to a room of people and have a computer sort them by genetic difference ... and it would group them by race/ethnicity. Same with the crazies who deny the biological difference between men and women. It's like looking at a bull and a cow and insisting there is no difference.

It is an attempt to use the  IRS to suspend the Bill of Rights. What else?

I make my own hours most of the time, so it isn't pushing my luck or anything.

New mini-ITX motherboard arrived today. Was surprised to learn it has an mSATA slot on the underside. The idea of booting from a drive that cannot be seen by a casual observer looking in the case is kind of cool. All they'd see is the regular platter drive for large linear files aka videos. The downside is you pay a premium for mSATA and deals are unlikely due tot he format barely launching before it was replaced with a different incompatible design coming Real Soon Now. Something may turn up though. I can always use the SSD I already have on hand for this build in another system if a good mSATA drive deal turns up. It does mean dismounting the board from the case though, or rather from the slide-out tray, which is always a high risk moment.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at May 21, 2013 12:12 AM (ZPrif) Most intelligent people would not deny racial differences nor would pointing out those differences be unduly criticized in most settings. Saying there are racial differences is not inaccurate and is surely no sin. Saying there are qualitative differences from one race to another that make one preferable or superior to another are. You read Derbyshire's article, the one that got him fired from the National Review? I did. Derbyshire was right to be fired. He was testing the waters, seeing how far he could go--which was folly, given that when Bill Buckley was alive he had fired editors and writers out of hand if they evinced even the slightest hint of racism or antisemitism. Buckley had also apologized several times over the course of his public career for his own unintentionally racist remarks made when he was younger and offered a very public mea culpa for his (tepid) defense of South African apartheid. Derbyshire thought he was being brave and provocative. I argue he was neither.

721 What epobirs said.

If your laptop seems like its acting more like the FSA then force a shut down.  Unplug from the outlet.  Pop the battery out.  Count to 30 while pressing the start button to fully de-energize the system.  Release start button.  Re-install battery.  Plug back in.  And press the Start button to see if it boots properly.  Press F8 to boot into Safe Mode and when it gets to login screen tell it to shutdown - do not login.  Restart and once it finishes booting log in normally.  Should be okay.

And don't do that again okay?

There is also the temptation, if a good deal on a 200 GB or larger mSATA drive came along, to have no hard drive at all. Really baffle those trying to figure out how it boots and offers a full array of apps.

Intel is vague on when I can expect the CPU to arrive. I still need to buy a PSU. The case will accept a plain old ATX unit but I'm looking to see how small of a unit I can find in the 400-450W range. That'll leave me plenty of head room for a decent video card if I choose to add one later. I may look into doing an external PSU to avoid a lot of heat. A big old Xbox style brick. That is as quiet as it will get without water cooling or wimpy components.

Yowsa - just talked to a good friend of mine who I cat-sit for. She flew to Oklahoma City last year to see a very close family friend of hers graduate from college. He's a teacher. Who got an elementary job teaching PE. In Moore, Oklahoma.

Now his school is Centers (sp?) Elementary, which is not either of the two they have been talking about on the news. But they also took a hit from the tornado and he was trapped with kids for about 1/2 hour, but his kids were okay - they did get enough warning to take cover. He was able to text his mom and let her know almost right away that he was okay.

One of the heartbreaking things he later told his mom on the phone was that he had heard that some of the kids killed at the other elementary actually drowned. They had taken cover in the boiler room and evidently the plumbing was utterly destroyed when the tornado hit and they were trapped. I don't know if that has been on the news or verified.

There are no words. Only prayers.

Only if they're looking to fill time and distract from an otherwise underwhelming presentation. That thing isn't remotely ready to be a sellable product except for the LBE market. But consider how long the 360 was in the market before Kinect launched.

I predicted a long time ago that AV systems would gain the ability to map their environments in 3D in order to control the audio sweet spot and make 3D video work properly for multiple viewers without glasses or headsets. It's become pretty common in productions using virtual sets.

That scam had actually been done about twenty years before that movie was made. Programmer in early 60s became aware of how bank was handling fractional cents, which was to keep them and never tell the customer they'd ever existed. He instead channeled the fractional cents into his own account, then transferred it and himself to a pleasant faraway land with no extradition treaty with the US.

Not that they could charge him with anything, as the money was not supposed to exist. The right words were whispered to some regulators and some amendments slipped into the next round of banking legislation.

768   A simple example is the zealots who insist there is no such thing as race -- even though I could give a blind DNA test to a room of people and have a computer sort them by genetic difference ... and it would group them by race/ethnicity.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at May 21, 2013 12:12 AM (ZPrif)

IIRC, there is greater genetic difference within a "race" than between races.   In short, there is so much genetic overlap that you're really just looking at cosmetic differences.

Culture matters more, and while that tends to follow ethnicity due to children learning from their parents, it's not a genetic component.   America is not a racial identity.

"If they look back through this history to trace their connection with those days by blood, they find they have none ...

but when they look through that old Declaration of Independence they find that those old men say that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” and then they feel that that moral sentiment taught in that day evidences their relation to those men, that it is the father of all moral principle in them, and that they have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh of the men who wrote that Declaration"

774 Anna, just wanted to share another Doctor Who thought I've been mulling over.

When we met Eccleston's Doctor, he saw a mirror in Rose's place and commented on his appearance, implying he had just recently regenerated. He spent most of the season bitter and downright damaged from the events of the Time War. At the end of the season (admittedly because the actor wanted to move on), he was killed because of something Rose did, but that was in turn a result of the Daleks seeking revenge for his actions.

At the end of the second season, he lost Rose to another dimension due to another intervention of Daleks, that itself was caused by their attempt to avoid what he did to end the Time War.

Third season was a bit of a break. He found one Time Lord that escaped what he had done (The Master) who could have offered him some semblance of forgiveness/closure for what he did was killed before he could do so, returning the Doctor to the loneliness that was the consequence of the Time War.

Fourth season had him losing a companion due to the actions of Davros, which again, referenced back to the Time War and in a way was an ongoing punishment for him.

Fifth had the Master bring the Time Lords back from the last day of the Time War, and this time the consequences slew the Doctor again.

And then Matt Smith. Who has been rather frivolous. It seemed the writers were moving away from the weight of the Time War (from what I've seen Davies seemed to think they were done with it), but maybe it was just his way of pretending he was finally over it. Heck, they rewrote all of space time at the end of the season to make that point. Except ...

They also established that his success in thwarting enemies and killing lots of them led to an alliance to put an end to him, and the following season they took the form of a religion.

So my question left over from last season is: Are the Silence merely a subset of his current known enemies or are they ultimately going to be traced back to the Time Lords?

This season, in the Gaimon episode that didn't happen, Clara founf a written history of the Time War, in which she read the Doctor's name. That seems to be a pretty big clue where the plot's going. So my question is if the 50th anniversary special is going to finally put the events of the Time War to rest, and will it kill Smith's Doctor one last time?

Tangentially, will the John Hurt Doctor be using the name Doctor, or another once he broke the promise toward the end of the war? Will Clara remember the name (and does it actually matter)? And if the Valeyard is still in Smith's future, and the Time War is locked so that it can't be revisited, how exactly does he wind up in the sixth Doctor's continuity, on Gallifrey?

Oklahmans are witnessing so beautifully on the news tonight... one man on Greta thanked the "God of all creation" and Jesus. CNN's  John King quoted a local church's  sign "When you've taken all you can stand, kneel". Even the CNN reporters are mentioning prayer.

Watching the Fox reporters is so nice; they keep asking for prayer, claiming "miracles happen", and telling  those they interview that they are praying for them. Alicia Acuna, Casey Stegal, and  Greg (I forget his last name) have been really mentioning God.
