Bookworm: The IRS Scandal is the Worst Political Scandal in American History
And she makes a good case that it is. I can't think of any other scandal where the government actually engaged in widespread extra-legal stifling of dissent on ideological grounds.
Ignore all that. The absolute worst scandal that's emerged lately, and the worst administration scandal in American history is the IRS scandal. Why? Because you, the People, became the targets of a comprehensive federal government effort to stifle dissent, one made using the government's overwhelming and disproportionate policing and taxing powers. All of the other scandals, going back to Andrew Johnson's post-Civil War scandals, Warren G. Harding's 1920s Teapot Dome scandal, Nixon's Watergate, Reagan's Iran-Contra, and Clinton's Oval Office sexcapades have actually been narrowly focused acts of cronyism, garden-variety political chicanery, or personal failings. It's been insider stuff.
The IRS scandal, by contrast, is a direct attack on the American people. Right now, Progressives throughout America are pretending that this scandal doesn't matter: "Obama wasn't involved." "Tea Partiers had it coming because they're all corrupt." "Obama would have won the election anyway." "It was just a coincidence that the only groups that had their applications scrutinized, sometimes for years, were politically conservative. It means nothing that, when one group changed its name to sound Progressive, its application was approved in only three weeks." "This is just a bureaucratic snafu." "It's a few rogue agents in Ohio."
And whenever you see illegal thuggery, be sure and look for the union label. No doubt the NTEU's 94% donation rate to Democrats is completely irrelevant to how they would treat conservatives as IRS employees.
Or maybe not. And clearly they're not willing to go after these known tax scofflaws.
So if the president and the NTEU are colluding to punish their enemies, do we have any recourse at all?
And as DC law firm Patton Boggs is learning you can only file bogus environmental lawsuits against Chevron on your own initiative so many times before the bear notices.
Since late 2010, Washington, D.C. law firm Patton Boggs has been poking a sleeping tiger. It has filed three peculiar federal lawsuits - in its own name, not on behalf of any client - against Chevron, the third-largest corporation in the United States. These cases have fared poorly; two were quickly dismissed, and a federal magistrate judge recommended tossing the third in March.
On Friday, the tiger awoke. Chevron (CVX) sought a federal judge's permission to bring counterclaims against the 455-lawyer firm for alleged fraud and deceit for its conduct in representing the Amazon Defense Front, which obtained a $19 billion environmental judgment against the oil giant in Lago Agrio, Ecuador, in February 2011. Chevron also seeks to charge the firm with "malicious prosecution" for having pursued its three lawsuits in bad faith. Chevron seeks to hold the law firm liable for any damages Chevron suffers from the Front's allegedly fraud-infested litigation, plus punitive and treble damages.
The Wit and Wisdom of Nancy Pelosi
Just remember that for four years she was Speaker of the House and only a VP away from becoming President.
. Unemployment benefits are the best form of economic development.
. The IRS admission it illegally targeted conservative groups is the fault of the Supreme Court.
. We have to pass the bill (ObamaCare) to see what's in it.
. Every week we don't pass a Stimulus package, 500 million Americans lose their jobs.
. I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels.
. We don't have a spending problem.
. The CIA misleads us all the time.
. Enforcing immigration laws is un-American.
To Ask the Question Is To Answer It
Charles C. W. Cooke wonders why those who freaked out about the PATRIOT Act and how it might lead to people's library records being seized aren't so concerned about the IRS asking conservative groups to hand over their Facebook posts and a list of books they were reading. Or for records of conversations they had or their positions on issues. Shouldn't the ACLU be as up in arms about the IRS's intrusion into people's privacy as they were about Homeland Security looking at suspected terrorist's use of library computers?
The Utter Shamelessness of Candy Crowley
She's back to claiming that Obama was late in calling the Benghazi attacks terrorism - just like she claimed before the debates.
But in fact, Crowley's own news agency, CNN, had reported that Obama called the attacks at Benghazi terrorism "for the first time" only on September 20, nine days after the attacks.Crowley herself also reported that the President was recalcitrant in calling it terrorism. As it happens her inexplicable and unwarranted support of Obama on the debate stage contradicted her own reporting on Benghazi.
In September, only a few weeks before the debate, Crowley had said on CNN that Obama took 17 days to give a "sort of definitive statement" that terrorists orchestrated the attacks.
By February of 2013, and conveniently after the election, the co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, Frank Fahrenkopf, admitted that Crowley was simply wrong about her assertion that Obama called the attacks an act of terror.
In even a moderately just world she would be shunned by every decent journalist in the field.
The World's Least and Most Racially Tolerant Countries
Anglo and Latin countries are the most tolerant - and India, Jordan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong are the least.
Remember when Gandhi was asked what he thought about Western civilization, and he snarkily replied that it would be a good idea? Back atcha, Mohandas.
Yeah Gandhi was great at witty snark - building an actual working multi-racial tolerant society not so much.
This is what you can achieve when you spend 50 years practicing your craft.

Well, you can't. Whatever trust once was there is gone.
Realistically, the American public should not have trusted such an organization.
At this point, the only question is whether or not there are enough 'conservatives' who want to change our course from its current direction.

Did any of the Bush directors admit on tape to selectively targeting leftie groups?
Nope.
Was there a set of official documents describing the targeting by the Bush IRS?
Nope.
Was there a demonstrable pattern and practice with in the Bush administration of targeting liberal groups for extra scrutiny?
Nope.
They have anecdotes. We have admissions and facts.
Further, the 'BOOOSH did it' claim is invidious comparison, the standard logical fallacy of the Left.
What is the standard? That of their worst enemy, Bush? If so, they admit the Obama administration is guilty of dangerous and unconstitutional practices because that is exactly the charge they leveled at Bush routinely.

I've never given a dime to the Red Cross, in honor of my father. There he was in Germany in WWII, earning a Presidential Citation for Remagen, in the field for weeks on end. Finally he found himself at a base camp where there was a Red Cross girl with coffee and donuts. He said it looked and smelled wonderful. Then the girl told him it would be 10 cents for coffee and 5 cents for a donut.
In a war zone. With soldiers like my dad just coming in from the front, they wanted money.
My parents were very charitable, but in my father's house not one red cent was ever given to the Red Cross. He passed years ago, but I continue the loathing on his behalf.

I'm just kidding. If you were ever in the same room with my in-laws, you'd kill to only have to watch The Voice. Mine both take to you AT.THE.SAME.TIME. Always. You have to look back and forth to each one and nod like you know what they're talking about....and they're seldom both talking about the same subject. It's so fun.
But I do want to know how a guy known as 'The Hammer' watches that show?

I've never given a dime to the Red Cross, in honor of my father. There he was in Germany in WWII, earning a Presidential Citation for Remagen, in the field for weeks on end. Finally he found himself at a base camp wherethere was a Red Cross girl with coffee and donuts. He said it looked and smelled wonderful. Then the girl told him it would be10 cents forcoffee and 5 cents for a donut.
In a war zone. With soldiers like my dad just coming in from the front, they wanted money.
My parents were very charitable, but in my father's house not one red cent was ever given to the Red Cross. He passed years ago, but I continue the loathing on his behalf.

oops. found the funding on wiki
Each national team is responsible for its own expenses and most surveys are financed by local sources. However, central funding has been obtained in cases where local funding is not possible. Presently, the activities of the WVS Secretariat and WVS Executive Committee are funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. Other funding has been obtained from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Volkswagen Foundation, the German Science Foundation (DFG) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From wiki answers...for whatever it's worth...
Mahatma Gandhi, the proponent of civil disobedience, was born a Hindu in 1869 and practiced Hinduism all his life. He always believed in compassion, nonviolence, and the Golden Rule of "treat others as you want them to treat you." He believed strongly in the Hindu principle of ahimsa which means non - violence. Mahatma Gandhi has come to be known as the Father of India and a beacon of light in the last decades of British Colonial Rule, promoting non-violence, justice and harmony between people of all faiths all of which he learnt form the religion of Hinduism.
However, Gandhi once told "I am a Hindu, Muslim and Christian" as well. He was also influenced by Jainism.

This has been beat to death, those were war time regulations imposed by the Army on the Red Cross at the request of the allies. The reasons behind the rules are bizarre, but not due the Red Cross. Most of the guys expected free coffee, etc. because that's what the Red Cross distributed stateside, but once they got into the European theater they had to pay.
I have seen reports of both free and payment required from the Pacific, I suspect it was imposed when mixed with Commonwealth troops.

Reality is ethnic diversity is an excellent predictor for corruption, bribery, govt abuse, etc, etc.
The most honest countries with the least corruption are generally also the most ethnically homogenous.
--------------------------
All very true. The 'Diversity is good' idiots always hint, if not out state, that one culture is as good (desirable) as another. It is taught in the schools (COEXIST!). I usually casually ask if they believe that applies to those countries where the culture is dominated by Islamic law.

My friend had the unfortunate task of chaperoning at a weekend Girl Scout campout this weekend. Apparently the Girl Scouts are all in on the liberal wet dream agenda--the use of any prayers mentioning "Lord" or "God" was banned, so the grace at meal times was about giving back to the mother river (WTF???) They had to take their own cloth napkins to use all weekend. All food was healthy, nothing pre-packaged. the s'mores were low fat sugar free. There was no sugar or cream for the mom's coffee in the mornings. All the crafts had to be done with recycled materials, they weren't allowed to bring any craft that was made up of new materials.

The same will be true of FEMA. They will spend enormous amounts of money, and leave behind people living in moldy, second-hand trailers. FEMA is peopled with profligate, inefficient asshats, with boatloads of our money, and no on-the-ground grasp of what to do, or how to do it. It is too large and too unwieldy to do anything but throw money around.

If anybody is interested, Ace did NOT do all his homework on his "Doctored email" thread, and will probably wish he had. I was happy to "finish it up", but was late to the party (see the last couple of comments, where I have tracked down the exact quotes).
My own read on it is that the true "undoctored" version is a single email from a staffer at the WH who is basically saying, in bureaucrat-speak, that POTUS is unhappy with how this makes it sound like his campaign points are crap, so go back and do it over.
So it actually points to the WH as the real source of the talking point revisions, the way I read it. I would like to hear other morons opinions. It wouldn't be the first time that journalists missed the main point (such as missing that "you didn't build that" was tantamount to a socialist manifesto, not simply a slap in the face to small business).

Good evening once again, my fair morons. I scored a purchase today, although I don't know if that was from a moron or just delightful happenstance.
I recently published a children's novel called "My Teachers are Zombies!"
It's the nice story of three friends who discover their teacher is a zombie who is trying to make their brains bigger so as to eat them later (with a dash of pepper).
I would like to encourage people to at least read the sample provided on the Amazon page (available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKJ70AW) and if it catches your interest, please feel free to purchase it or gift it to a friend!
I double edited it as well, to avoid the common spelling and grammar mistakes that plague most first time writers (of course, mentioning that guarantees at least two errors will crop up in this message). I also made sure there was a bit of light foreshadowing, use of Chekov's gun, and lamp-shading. Additionally, it's a self-contained story, not a series, which appeals to me in an era of unnecessary trilogies and sequels.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yeah going to have to disagree with you there. My life experience was probably radically different than yours though, and I don't think people take that much into account. It's easier to squirm, dance and yell than accept people can get "rubbed the wrong way" one too many times and...well... then it becomes easier to just "deal with your own".

We like to think that diversity is completely good and cost-free but it's not. There have been multiple studies showing that that higher diversity in an area is associated with lower social trust and social cohesion.
Now that doesn't mean that *on the whole* diversity isn't good but we do have to acknowledge that one of its downsides is a certain amount of 'cultural friction' and loss of social trust. But normally as long as everyone feels part of a larger culture it can be counter-acted. But if you get too much Balkanization and alienation, then it can tip things over into a 'low trust' society.

Local high school was visited and threatened by the Clinton Justice Dept. (Bill Lan Lee) . The team name was 'The Warriors', and mascot was a war-painted Cherokee. Threaten with lawsuit, they changed names, because PC.
At the time, just as a matter of interest, I checked Sam Daschle's home state of SD, found 26 school teams named 'Warriors'. Why here? Our Congressman was a thorn in Clinton's side. That's what happens when totalitarians take control. Early, small example of what is happening now.

I'm lovin' the CVX thing, because I love Chevron. I plunked some money into 3 stocks about 8 yrs ago, and not only has it done the best, but it's dividend is pretty nice, and increases at a very rapid clip. I don't pay enough attention, but I get the impression that they're especially innovative in finding oil. They also do the most geothermal, IIRC, which seems to make sense in certain applications, vs the usual uneconomical eco-Nazi nonsense.
In contrast, my ConocoPhillips has been more restrained. That's partly because Hugo Chavez stole some of my assets a few years back (the other guys were smarter about it). Then they invested a lot with the Ruskies in NatGas, before the big finds in the US that made the price plummet. Lastly, I saw quotes where the CEO was spewing eco-nonsense, which is unforgiveable. At least they spun of PSX for me, which has doubled in less than a year.

On the Crowley thing, I looked it up at the time, and Obama did make reference to "acts of terror". That being said, it was ambiguous as to which acts he was specifically speaking. Prior to that part he had spoken of the original 9/11, which multiple attacks itself, and Benghazi. The context did not tell me whether he was speaking of one, the other, or both.
Regardless, nobody came away from that speech saying,. "Holy shit, terrorists attacked our consulate in Bengazi!" It's totally dishonest (shocka!) to go back and claim that that he had said it all along. Romney missed a real opportunity to tear Obama a new one, but he was (understandably?) confused and let two girls gang up on him.

Oddly, the 100% Mexican border towns in Mexico are pretty high in crime and corruption. And, no, I wouldn't say that the ethnically homogenous Rio Grande Valley is low in crime and corruption on this side of the border El Paso is, but that's a much bally-hooed anomaly.
The relatively low crime has less to do with homogeneity and more to do with a large law enforcement presence and a desire by the cartels to avoid drawing attention to their operations.

Yeah, kind of my point. Actually, El Paso's low crime rate (relative to its size, location and demographic factors like young population) is the subject of a lot of speculation. I'm in the lithium-in-the-water camp.
*sips imported bottled water*
Talking to El Paso Cops as well as some people who worked in intelligence in the area, the general consensus was that the influx of border patrol agents blocked the illegals coming over to break into houses while the cartels kept the local gangs in check. I think that El Paso's incestuous nature helped as well. Most everyone who lives there was born there. They move around the city as they go through life, but it's not like other big cities where you have an influx of young people moving in from elsewhere.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at May 20, 2013 11:17 PM (ZPrif)>>
Another reason is Basketball dosen't draw in the suburbs. Used to be a kid could be in 3 sports and be cool but no more specialization is happening in or before high school. So kids that may get to be 6 foot plus have already chosen before they hit 6 feet and since white suburban schools get their asses kicked in Basketball that choice is avoided.

According to the Salon article, Bush targeted the NAACP and a couple others.

Very Late to the thread.
I agree W/ 14 that Wilson with his WWI anti-sedition sedition pogrom was bad, and possibly worse than the IRS jihad.
And Wilson had the awful and racist distinction of bringing Jim Crow to DC and the Federal Government. He segregated the civil service. He allowed "Birth of a Nation" to be shown in the White House. (If you never saw it, it could be subtitled, "How the noble, God fearing, KKK saved White Southern women from the shiftless, violent and sexually over-revved black men." I was shocked and disgusted when I saw it the first time.)
In other words W Wilson was a typical Democrat.

Great, if the irSS is used by both parties to attack ordinary citizens, then why don't we all agree to get rid of it. We can go for some simplified tax code that eliminates the ways assholes can use the confusion to hide the way they behave.

Seems like you made two distinctly different points. I was merely responding to only one of them.
I, and most of us, have come to expect nothing less than what the hard left-driven agenda of the democrats has given us. But over the years, nay decades, my wishes and expectations of the republicans have lowered to the point where I hold them in almost equal contempt. They are either utterly feckless or in on the gag. Choose one or prove me wrong.

The modern NBA player is more like Chris Webber than Allen Iverson. Webber may act like a thug sometimes, but he came from a stable middle class family.
Also, lots of multi-generation athletes now. The Blake Griffins and Steph Curries. The Grant Hills and Ken Griffey Jrs, where there dad was a pro athlete. Huge advantage to have a rich pro athlete dad. Good genes. Money. Good coaching.

We had a Basketball backboard/net of the front of my garage growing up. And we played some form of it till we hit enough guys to make a team to play baseball or football. But the thought was not this game is less fun than Baseball and Football but they were played in the park where mom wasn't able to watch from the kitchen window. And grass parks in the burbs were more plentiful than concrete basketball courts.

What else?
I make my own hours most of the time, so it isn't pushing my luck or anything.
New mini-ITX motherboard arrived today. Was surprised to learn it has an mSATA slot on the underside. The idea of booting from a drive that cannot be seen by a casual observer looking in the case is kind of cool. All they'd see is the regular platter drive for large linear files aka videos. The downside is you pay a premium for mSATA and deals are unlikely due tot he format barely launching before it was replaced with a different incompatible design coming Real Soon Now. Something may turn up though. I can always use the SSD I already have on hand for this build in another system if a good mSATA drive deal turns up. It does mean dismounting the board from the case though, or rather from the slide-out tray, which is always a high risk moment.

A lot of laptops take that very badly. The older the worse it can get. There were some model that would get so bad you had to pull the battery before it would reboot properly.

If your laptop seems like its acting more like the FSA then force a shut down. Unplug from the outlet. Pop the battery out. Count to 30 while pressing the start button to fully de-energize the system. Release start button. Re-install battery. Plug back in. And press the Start button to see if it boots properly. Press F8 to boot into Safe Mode and when it gets to login screen tell it to shutdown - do not login. Restart and once it finishes booting log in normally. Should be okay.
And don't do that again okay?

There is also the temptation, if a good deal on a 200 GB or larger mSATA drive came along, to have no hard drive at all. Really baffle those trying to figure out how it boots and offers a full array of apps.
Intel is vague on when I can expect the CPU to arrive. I still need to buy a PSU. The case will accept a plain old ATX unit but I'm looking to see how small of a unit I can find in the 400-450W range. That'll leave me plenty of head room for a decent video card if I choose to add one later. I may look into doing an external PSU to avoid a lot of heat. A big old Xbox style brick. That is as quiet as it will get without water cooling or wimpy components.

Yowsa - just talked to a good friend of mine who I cat-sit for. She flew to Oklahoma City last year to see a very close family friend of hers graduate from college. He's a teacher. Who got an elementary job teaching PE. In Moore, Oklahoma.
Now his school is Centers (sp?) Elementary, which is not either of the two they have been talking about on the news. But they also took a hit from the tornado and he was trapped with kids for about 1/2 hour, but his kids were okay - they did get enough warning to take cover. He was able to text his mom and let her know almost right away that he was okay.
One of the heartbreaking things he later told his mom on the phone was that he had heard that some of the kids killed at the other elementary actually drowned. They had taken cover in the boiler room and evidently the plumbing was utterly destroyed when the tornado hit and they were trapped. I don't know if that has been on the news or verified.
There are no words. Only prayers.

Only if they're looking to fill time and distract from an otherwise underwhelming presentation. That thing isn't remotely ready to be a sellable product except for the LBE market. But consider how long the 360 was in the market before Kinect launched.
I predicted a long time ago that AV systems would gain the ability to map their environments in 3D in order to control the audio sweet spot and make 3D video work properly for multiple viewers without glasses or headsets. It's become pretty common in productions using virtual sets.

yeah, I'm thinking that if it makes an appearance, it will be in the capacity along the lines of "This is what we think the future may look like" as the people working on it said that it's nowhere ready for primetime last month. Be akin to the first Kinect sizzle trailer

That scam had actually been done about twenty years before that movie was made. Programmer in early 60s became aware of how bank was handling fractional cents, which was to keep them and never tell the customer they'd ever existed. He instead channeled the fractional cents into his own account, then transferred it and himself to a pleasant faraway land with no extradition treaty with the US.
Not that they could charge him with anything, as the money was not supposed to exist. The right words were whispered to some regulators and some amendments slipped into the next round of banking legislation.

But yeah the Nazi monster is after the amulets. But Zoot knows what they are and issues them out after breaking the magical seals. Though the Battle Nun costume should be kept simple black with white trim. But lets make the habit pop, so reverse the colors to white with black trim. Glossy black patent leather boots for stomping. The amulet is a pectoral so it rests between the breasts. The hem can't fall all the way to the ground or they would trip on their own vestments so just below the knees I would say.

They also have a wireless Windows keyboard with built-in trackball, mouse buttons, and a scroll wheel on the 'shoulder' like a game controller. I'm hoping it'll go well with my HTPC build. Only $8 after rebate.

IIRC, there is greater genetic difference within a "race" than between races. In short, there is so much genetic overlap that you're really just looking at cosmetic differences.
Culture matters more, and while that tends to follow ethnicity due to children learning from their parents, it's not a genetic component. America is not a racial identity.
"If they look back through this history to trace their connection with those days by blood, they find they have none ...
but when they look through that old Declaration of Independence they find that those old men say that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” and then they feel that that moral sentiment taught in that day evidences their relation to those men, that it is the father of all moral principle in them, and that they have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh of the men who wrote that Declaration"

When we met Eccleston's Doctor, he saw a mirror in Rose's place and commented on his appearance, implying he had just recently regenerated. He spent most of the season bitter and downright damaged from the events of the Time War. At the end of the season (admittedly because the actor wanted to move on), he was killed because of something Rose did, but that was in turn a result of the Daleks seeking revenge for his actions.
At the end of the second season, he lost Rose to another dimension due to another intervention of Daleks, that itself was caused by their attempt to avoid what he did to end the Time War.
Third season was a bit of a break. He found one Time Lord that escaped what he had done (The Master) who could have offered him some semblance of forgiveness/closure for what he did was killed before he could do so, returning the Doctor to the loneliness that was the consequence of the Time War.
Fourth season had him losing a companion due to the actions of Davros, which again, referenced back to the Time War and in a way was an ongoing punishment for him.
Fifth had the Master bring the Time Lords back from the last day of the Time War, and this time the consequences slew the Doctor again.
And then Matt Smith. Who has been rather frivolous. It seemed the writers were moving away from the weight of the Time War (from what I've seen Davies seemed to think they were done with it), but maybe it was just his way of pretending he was finally over it. Heck, they rewrote all of space time at the end of the season to make that point. Except ...
They also established that his success in thwarting enemies and killing lots of them led to an alliance to put an end to him, and the following season they took the form of a religion.
So my question left over from last season is: Are the Silence merely a subset of his current known enemies or are they ultimately going to be traced back to the Time Lords?
This season, in the Gaimon episode that didn't happen, Clara founf a written history of the Time War, in which she read the Doctor's name. That seems to be a pretty big clue where the plot's going. So my question is if the 50th anniversary special is going to finally put the events of the Time War to rest, and will it kill Smith's Doctor one last time?
Tangentially, will the John Hurt Doctor be using the name Doctor, or another once he broke the promise toward the end of the war? Will Clara remember the name (and does it actually matter)? And if the Valeyard is still in Smith's future, and the Time War is locked so that it can't be revisited, how exactly does he wind up in the sixth Doctor's continuity, on Gallifrey?

Oklahmans are witnessing so beautifully on the news tonight... one man on Greta thanked the "God of all creation" and Jesus. CNN's John King quoted a local church's sign "When you've taken all you can stand, kneel". Even the CNN reporters are mentioning prayer.
Watching the Fox reporters is so nice; they keep asking for prayer, claiming "miracles happen", and telling those they interview that they are praying for them. Alicia Acuna, Casey Stegal, and Greg (I forget his last name) have been really mentioning God.
