Overnight Open Thread (5-26-2013)
— Maetenloch

Due a long busy day and a major Jamba Juice accident that necessitated completely wiping down both front seats tonight's ONT will only be 40%-assed.

James Taranto: My Anti-Mentor

Where James Taranto of the WSJ's Best of the Web recalls how a cartoon and associated story published in the Cal State Northridge Paper, The Sundial, in 1987 led to political correctness run amok, his suspension, lies and hypocrisy, education about actual journalism, a successful lawsuit against the university, and ultimately a happy and successful career. It's too good to excerpt so read the whole thing.

The vice provost of California State University, Northridge, retires today. Ordinarily that would be unworthy of a national newspaper's notice, but Cynthia Rawitch was a formative figure in your humble columnist's professional and intellectual development.

...That's where we came in. The journalism department at Northridge had a subscription to the Bruin, and early one evening, while waiting to put the next day's Sundial to bed, we started browsing recent issues of the UCLA paper and learned of the rooster kerfuffle. What a story! Months earlier we'd read a disturbing piece in National Review about left-wing censorship on college campuses, mostly in the Ivy League. Here was a real live case right in our front yard.

We drove the half hour to UCLA and did some reporting. While there, we picked up a copy of Nommo, the black paper. We were astonished to find a viciously racist rant against "the possessive and greedy Europeans"--meaning persons of pallor--who "suffer under the mistaken belief that a man can secure himself in an insecure world best by ownership of great personal, private wealth" and whose "abstract theories and philosophy concerning government and economics has [sic] an underlying tone of selfishness, possessiveness and greediness because their character is made up of these things."

...We wrote the story up into a 1,200-word op-ed, which we ran with the cartoon and a Nommo excerpt. It filled the Sundial's opinion page. We finished on March 4, so that the article would appear the same day the Comm Board was to make its final decision on Bell's punishment.
That is, we were not looking to create a controversy at Northridge when we wrote about the one at UCLA. We did not expect one, for two reasons. First, Northridge was a sleepy, third-tier commuter school with nothing like the pressure-cooker politics of its elite neighbor. Second, our student newspaper was overseen by journalism professors, who inculcated their students with inspiring pieties about the ideal of free expression.

As to the first point, our judgment proved reliable. Beyond a few letters to the editor, the op-ed provoked no controversy on our campus--except in the journalism department. Faculty publisher Cynthia Rawitch was not in the newsroom the day the piece ran, a Thursday. But we were there when the editor, ashen-faced, took a phone call from her that was obviously a dressing down. Rawitch ordered all the editors to gather for a Monday meeting.

And then Taranto entered the world of PC hell.

Oh and here's the rather mild cartoon that kicked the whole imbroglio off:OB-XP204_botwt0_F_20130523203224

Sure. I'll put mine at half mast in the a.m., then go to 10:00 Memorial Service, hoist it up when I get back. I have a larger flag that I fly on Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day. I still have my dad's old 48 star flag, and I used to put it up on Flag Day, which is his birthday, but it has become too tattered, and been retired. I got a little, uh, allergy problem doing that.

Eddie Albert fans might find this interesting.

8 years ago on May 26, 2005 Eddie Albert Heimberger died at his home near L.A. He was 99. He stopped using his last name professionally because he kept getting called Eddie Hamburger.

Eddie Albert is best known as the star of the 60's TV show "Green Acres" ( IMHO the best TV comedy show ever made ). Albert played Oliver Wendell Douglas, a befuddled lawyer-turned-farmer. He and Arnold the Pig were the only sane charactors on the show.

Most people don't know that he did some pre-WW 2 spying for Army Intelligence while traveling to Mexico. Apparently Nazzie U-boats were visiting that country.

But it was during the Tarawa Invasion from 20-24 November, 1943 that Albert considered the proudest accomplishment of his life. He was a Lt (jg) and the salvage officer aboard the Attack Transport USS Sheridan, APA-51. Riding in a small salvage boat he assisted in directing landing craft to the invasion beaches. After his boat lost it's propeller on the reef he transferred to a Higgins Boat (landing craft). He is credited with personally saving the lives of about 47 Marines and assisting with rescuing about 30 more, while under fire. After the battle he helped with recovering dead Marines and equipment from the water and the beach.

For his actions he was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" Device for Valor, although it would take 44 years for him to receive it.

97 LTJG Francis L. Toner IV, USN

I met Frank at Fort Riley in the summer of 2008, as we were both there for pre-deployment training.  We were originally in the same team, but he transferred to a different one because his former CO was in it.  When we deployed that October, I went to Gardez and he went north to Mazar-e Sharif.  He was an SEABEE supporting construction projects for the ANA.

Like most ANA bases with US mentors, the US side was cramped, lots of tents and gravel so as not to look too permanent.  The Afghan side had paved roads.  This was before insider threats were common, so we thought nothing of going to the ANA side to PT, since the roads made good running tracks.  Frank was a PT stud, who may or may not have been thinking of applying for BUDS when he got home.  He would often run wearing his IBA, not for protection but as a weight vest.

One day in March 2009, he and a friend were running on the ANA side.  They met two other Navy officers, who were also there to PT, and stopped to have a conversation.  Accounts differ, but the nearest guard tower was manned by either a Taliban infiltrator who had joined the ANA, or a devout muslim who just couldn't stand two see American women in shorts and t-shirts talking to men.  Either way, the guy opened fire on the group from his tower.  He killed LT Florence Choe, wounded another, and had them pinned down in a ditch.  They were all unarmed.

Frank stood up and charged the tower.  I don't know how he expected to cover the open ground and then climb the stairs to the tower, but he charged anyway.  For his effort, he was shot in the face and killed.  But his action put the fear in that goat-fucking piece of shit, who then turned his rifle on himself.  Frank's actions saved his two shipmates.  He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

125 I like Taranto's bit about not getting a CSUN degree, as I have thought about doing it where I am at as payment for services rendered. Don't think I will, but have thought about it. I have had a chance to read the Sundial on occasion in the not entriely distant past, and the campus honestly struck me as if the liberal arts portions of it were a glorified high school, with "critical thinking" being assessed as how well Progressive tropes can be regurgitated. I'm not sure how many of the liberal arts and "studies" grads I would hire. Not many, honestly. Nothing harder to turn around than somone of strictly average ability thinking they are sitting on the knowledge of the ages. As far as CSUN, I particularly enjoyed the mural in the Chicano Studies department that has INS agents (yes, INS) painted with metallic vampire teeth dropping blood. Who needs Aeschylus when you have that?

What a strange animal the novel has become. You can have it thin or fat, with shrieks and silences in the very same book. How are we supposed to read the thing? Good post at This Aint Hell titled "Missing the Benghazi Point".  Part of it":

The conclusion quietly reached by a lot of former soldiers, and a lot of SOCOM veterans as well as a lot of active operators is that one of two things happened; either there was a conscious choice not to rescue our people, in the hopes that it would “blow over,” or there was so much dithering that by the time anyone actually made a decision it was already too late.  Both are completely antithetical to the warrior mentality.  Regardless of what “considerations” need to be made, you rescue your people first.  Indeed, Woods and Doherty (as well as their unnamed teammates) openly defied orders, because that is just what warriors do.  The heroism that it took to load up and take on crows ranging anywhere from 60-100 armed with technicals that had anti-aircraft guns with a small SOF team can not be understated.

I don't remember seeing any of the others. Elvis started off with "Less Than Zero", whose first line was "Calling Mr. Oswald with the swastika tattoo" and then stopped. I think he said something like, "They won't understand that here" and then launched into "Radio Radio". I never knew he was banned over that. Sounds petty. And if my recollection is correct (always a dicey proposition), he was right. The song refers to Oswald Mosley, a British Fascist from the 1930s. Any American hearing the name Oswald will automatically think "Lee Harvey".

190 Gin smells of juniper, the evergreen with the blue berries. Pine is sweeter. I have never eaten pine needles, but there is a men's cologne called Yatigan that smells like the most delicious warm pine needles and I wear it a lot in the wintertime. 196 what the Taranto article said to me is that we should not count on the political process to bail us out. suing the bastards in court may be our only recourse left.

Don't rely upon elections; better to rely upon yourself, and upon the mercy of the King.

200 Cormac McCarthy's "Suttree" is a reading experience that stretches far beyond ordinary plot, structure and literary flow. With words that ebb, flow, tumble and roll—some valid and some concocted—McCarthy takes his reader through the moods, dreams, and dark inner life of his protagonist, Bud Suttree, as well as the inner life and underbelly of Knoxville, Tennessee. The despair of a small community of broken people living haphazardly without hope for the future is exaggerated by the unimaginable filth, corruption, and pollution of a river town that takes no pity on poverty, but perpetuates it with constant reminders of lack and the lure of alcohol.

more from This Aint Hell

What I think is required is for veterans to remind the GOP the important part of Benghazi: someone screwed up royally, then compounded that screw up by denying any support to our foreign service personnel and CIA officers.  This administration doesnÂ’t know how to treat warriors and is openly suspicious of the motivations of sheepdogs.  They embarrass themselves, and by extension the rest of America with their befuddled tepid responses.  That we donÂ’t call them out on it, or remind them the seriousness of the consequences of their actions leaves some of the culpability in our laps as well.  We need to stop being the “crazy PTSD riddled vets” and start being cogent coherent advocates for a responsible posture in our foreign affairs.

Most of all, though, I think we need to get someone with big brass ones thatÂ’s willing to call out all politicians.  Warriors are men and women of action.  The words we live by have power behind them because the words are inspired by deeds.  They are not the silken words of career politicians but the honest words of those who have seen the tiger, and know too much bullshitting will get you killed.  What we need is a veteran that isnÂ’t afraid to look into the cameras and perhaps more importantly get in the faces of our political critters and say these immortal words: “RANGER THE FUCK UP!“

From what I hear, some kids and most adults around here kept sticking their boogerhooks into the stream to taste the chocolate. The last time the Mrs and I at there, we left very full. 286 I've always thought the Elvis Costello SNL banning was a hoax. The whole thing seem very prepared and was it any surprise that he went from playing a song that had zero recognition in the US to instead playing the song that was making him famous?

And how meaningful is a ban of a performer who is unlikely to be called upon for lack of mainstream hits? Costello peaked pretty early after a flurry of releases. By the early 80s he was a critical darling who rarely got anything new on the radio outside of college stations. SNL was mainly a venue for currently charting tracks.

287 Tomorrow I'll get up early, even though I don't have to go to work. I'll fix myself a drink even though the sun is just starting to come up. I'll take my drink outside, watch the sunrise and raise my glass to Rodger Valentine. He is someone I knew from my days in 1st Cav. I didn't know him well, he was a buddy of my roommate. During Desert Storm his unit (3/82 Artillery) was in an area where we had fired MLRS rockets. These bad boys break open and drop a large load of sub-munitions on target. Sometimes the sub-munitions don't explode. PVT Valentine was on a patrol of his unit's immediate area and was on foot. He stepped on a piece of DPICM (the sub-munition). It exploded, blowing off part of his foot. Now, here is where the randomness of war comes in. A piece of shrapnel flew up, hit the inside lip of his kevlar helmet at just the right angle and richocheted into his skull. He died on a table in his battalion aid station. He was 19. One of 148 US casualties. Didn't know him that well, but every Memorial Day I like to make sure he is remembered. This year, my son (an ROTC cadet) turned 19.

297 Other good CSUN stories-- --The students who blockaded a door to raise awareness about basically nothing (no joke, they were basically practicing the art of being an activist). Naturally, nothing was done. --the art "professor" who, as a mandatory class assignment for a 2000 and 4000 level class had students take plastic little green army soldiers, and dress them in civilian occupations (because no way doing twenty could be noble) , and then plant them outside the ROTC trailer. 4000 level senior class. Yeah.... The School Presidents response to the faculty when the Unit commander had the "artwork" moved? "Look, I'm forced to have ROTC or suffer a cut in funding." It wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of the unit. --took several years after 9/11 before Memorial Day and Veterans Day stopped being celebrated as one of the bridge days last week in December so staffers could have the week off between Christmas and New Year's. Cesar Chavez Day, however, was always "on" (speaking of which, one day, when the professor was saying we wouldn't be in class on Chavez Day, a guy turned to me, out of the blue, and said "they always concentrate on the small" (meaning division by race) The neat thing about his comment was that if you put a rising sun headband on him, he could have lead the first strike on Pearl Harbor. Assuming he knew a whole lot of Japanese, that is, which I doubt.

347 Oh, one last thing about CSUN, and it is something worth a local inquiring into--like many schools, they have a writing exam you have to pass to graduate. I ended up taking it, because passing my AAU-member school's back when I was an undergrad wasn't considered sufficient. Yeah....because we know all the folks who could work at Harvard choose to work at CSUN just to stay in the Valley. At any rate, the thing to check on is that they were planning on changing it to be a current event topic. The potential for bias in both selection and grading should be obvious. Especially if the grading was done by the Student Services guy who created the "keep it pimping" (or something very similiar) award for "hard-working" students at the student center. Overall summary: As bad as the Ivies and Dukes may be, at least they doing the indoctrination usually have talent of some sort or the other. The banality of indoctrination that goes on at the second-tier schools should give one pause.

All sorts of nonsense. Everyone appears to be telling me everything he is saying. I have a call from a competitor about a guy who was working for me. I have yet to return that call but I am guessing it is my "friend." now I have to figure out what to do with him. he is in violation of a lot of stuff he signed when he started. so he could not simply go away and embarrass me now we may have to sue him for violating his non-compete and non-disclosure.agreements.

There's also at least one fairly new location in Hawaii, as I recall.

Now if they'd just add one here in the Long Beach area.

Two playing at that game, apparently.  Peter Davision-era-Doctor Who followed by Animals Shagging/Fighting/Eating Each Other (i.e. "North America") has done very, very, very weird things to my mental processes.

I adopted Whiggishness after re-reading F. A. Hayek's essay "Why I Am Not A Conservative," where Hayek declares himself an Old Whig.

But "filbert the Old Whig" is just too damn depressing to use as a handle.  And "filbert the New Radical" would be too damn ambiguous."

Since I was in English Lit, I occasionally had to interact with these people. One of them cornered me with his spiel about who Shake was, and I cut him off and told him I had another theory about Shakespeare that was vastly more important, and I was absolutely certain it was correct. 487 395 Hey, what the heck is this ruckus about a 18 year old woman being in trouble for having sex with a 14 year old girl? Too old? I mean the 14 year old. Posted by: Roman Polanski at May 27, 2013 12:28 AM (zPVBH) The pink mafia is all aflutter that an 18 year old girl, HS cheerleader, was arrested for "Lewd and Lascivious" behavior with her 14 year old girlfriend. They are all just so sure that it is because the parents of the 14 year old are homophobes and not because they are pissed that an 18 year old is trying to get it on with their 14 year old daughter. When I pointed out to them that if the 18 year old was the captain of the football team, he would be in jail getting his ass torn to hell. And oh by the way, this is what being treated equal is all about. Their response is that they know the parents are homophobes, because they can just "feel it". The pink mafia plays up to the hysterical stereotype very well.

494 that's interesting. What do you consider the main distinction between being an Old Whig vs a Conservative? dumbed down for the drunk girl at the party.

Drunk guy at a party answer:  Well, Hayek thought conservatives were pretty much fixated on preserving the status quo whatever it may be, whereas a Whig was open to innovation where it truly represented an improvement in the human condition.  I guess this would contrast with "progressiveism" which mindlessly embraces innovation simply for innovation's sake.  There's a moral element to Whiggishness, but also an innovative strain that's part of what was best in the Enlightenment.

The Conservatives of old were monarchists, and "old-money" stick-in-the-mud types.  I think we would call them "Establishment Republicans" or "RINOs" now.  Back in the 19th Century, those guys were the Torys, and the Whigs were the radicals, the market-liberals, the classical-liberals, the libertarians.  The good guys.   But that's just my own personal, drunk opinion.

I'm not one of those.  I'm not a progressive.  I'm not a Tory.  I'm not a RINO.  I'm not an Establishment Republican.  I'm also not a big-L Libertarian.  Those guys are nuts.

And so:  Whig.

There's this thing called "history". It's good to learn from "history". It's especially good to learn from other people's mistakes earlier in "history" so that you don't repeat their mistakes. Especially if those mistakes were lethal ones.

Who were the last non-Muslim military force into Afghanistan? The Soviets.

Did the Soviets learn lessons the hard and bloody way because they ignored the thing called "history"? You bet your sweet ass they did.

What was the absolute A-number-one lesson the Soviets learned there?

THE LOCALS ARE TREACHEROUS GOATFUCKING LIARS WITH ZERO LOYALTY. NEVER, EVER TRUST THEM. NEVER, EVER TURN YOUR BACK ON ONE OF THEM. DO NOT GIVE THEM WEAPONS. DO NOT CONFIDE OPERATIONAL DETAILS IN THEM.

For fuck's sake, by the middle Eighties, the Soviets actually were handing out illustrated pamphlets to their draftee infantrymen who were new to the theater of operations, synopsizing the warning points above. I've seen those pamphlets. You can be sure that there are copies in the multitudinous military historical libraries of the Pentagon.

Were any of those historical lessons-learned picked up and taken to heart when Americans were put in harm's way in the 'Stan? Not a single goddamned one. The lessons all got learned again the hard way, and the tuition was paid in blood and pain and bereavement.

Because, after all, "Islam is a religion of peace." That's what the worthless piece of shit George W. Bush decreed from on high, and that's what Bush's equally worthless successor has endlessly repeated.

I can't tell if this sensation I am feeling in my chest is my heart burning with unquenched rage, or if it's raw bile forcing its way back up from my stomach in vomitous revulsion. Either way, I am utterly furious and completely disgusted with U.S. command authority for their so casually having put so many Americans in positions where those Americans ended up murdered by lying Muslim goatfuckers.

History matters. Pay attention. Or else.

515 People often refer to these periods as "the good old days."

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded Â— here and there, now and then Â— are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck."

531 And I'm like "WTF! We are non-political!" And I had to explicitly say, "hey, this is too political a topic for this group.

"Political" is defined by these people as "having an opinion contrary to mine."

They're weasels.

You need to go back to them and say "hey, I have this fabulous idea.  We should advocate the advance suppression of all speech that any person in this group might have any kind of objection to!  After all, it's dangerous to have contrary ideas flying around--it can cause all kinds of discord.  Maybe even violence!

What's wrong with that?  It's a suggestion that's no more political than your proposal to support gun control!  First Amendment---Second Amendment! We should take the one at its word, and take the other to mean the opposite of what its plain words say?

Maybe when you say the word "political" it doesn't mean what you seem to think it means, hmmm????"

Posted by: elizabethe at May 27, 2013 01:19 AM (qPCAa) The left don't recognize their own opinions as political, probably because they don't really separate personal and political. That's why the more of a committed leftist they are, the less *possible* communication is, because facts aren't even the basis for the opinions, it's "personal." Which means when you question their numbers it's a personal attack, and they fight.

564 One more, for Memorial Day.

I grew up in Arkansas, went to a small church with a small school.  My family was good friends with another family there.  They had a daughter a little younger than me, we saw each other six days a week for most of my childhood.  They also had two younger kids, not in school yet.  When I was in high school, that family moved to a different church, and a few years later we moved to Florida.  Samuel was almost 4 the last time I saw him on a regular basis.

Samuel turned 18 six months after 9/11, and promptly joined the Arkansas National Guard.  He spent a good bit of '04 and '05 in Baghdad, just outside of Sadr City.  He was there when the bad guys knew there was a full-out insurgency going on, but our leadership didn't.  He was kicking in doors, looking for bad guys who would happily blow up a city block just to kill a couple of Americans.

He came home, finished his enlistment, married a pretty little girl, got a good job as a small-town mailman, was active in his church.  But he had PTSD.  Since he had been on the cutting edge of the ugly side of that war, he was also on the cutting edge of the whole PTSD thing.  And since he was National Guard, and since the VA sucks even for AD, he got some treatment but it wasn't enough.  One Sunday afternoon he walked into his bedroom, took out a shotgun and put it under his chin.  Ended the PTSD.

He signed his name on the dotted line for his country, did everything his country asked him, and then his country forgot about him.  His name doesn't show up on lists of OIF KIAs.  I don't think his family even got the Gold Star pins.

But we remember.

She goes outside to see the little possum family (the neighbors have feed all the critters in their back yard. While she's out, I can hear them. She comes back inside and tells me nothing is on the roof. Crap. So, we get a flashlight and go out side. Right where the noise is coming from is a long, screened vent to ventilate the attic. Its about 12" x 6' and you can even see the rafters up there. I start shining the light around and low and behold several little masked faces are peering back at me. Damnit! Coons in the attic. And now I'm here because I can't get back to sleep wondering how in the hell I'm going to get them out and how the HELL they got in there in the first place.

The shows really hold no attraction for me and are not cheap even if they did. Outside of Penn ampersand Teller or maybe the Amazing Jonathan, there isn't much there. Part of the boredom is not being free to do much of anything requiring much spending. Not if I want to cover the bills next month, especially with little indulgences like acquiring parts for my HTPC build.

Getting a Core i7-3770K for $95 (my brother has access to Intel's RetailEdge program but wasn't going to do it this year, so I'm doing the quizzes using his login) is pretty nice but I still have to come up with the money before finance charges on the credit convert it into a much greater expenditure.

It might be different if LV weren't so familiar. I average about two weeks a year there for various jobs, with the biggest being CES. At least during that there isn't much time to be bored. It's work and sleep, which os really how I like it.

It's just beginning lighten up to the east and I think I just saw momma climbing the tree in the back yard. The reason it's hard to listen to is that two days ago I found a loose soffet vent and reattached it. I'm sure that was how she was getting in and out. It also means she hasn't been able to get to the for that amount of time. Damn. I don't want them in the attic, but I don't want them dead either. I was trying to remember what he like to eat best (it's been about 40 years since I had one). They were really noisy for about 45 minutes after I saw the adult. They have gotten really quiet now so perhaps momma found her way back in. The best thing is they are nested right at the big, long soffet vent, so I figure if I take it off perhaps I can get her to move them. Probably not, but I can give it a try.
