60 Years Ago: Top of the World Baby!
Quote of the Day: Thoughts on the Common Toad
How many a time have I stood watching the toads mating, or a pair of hares having a boxing match in the young corn, and thought of all the important persons who would stop me enjoying this if they could. But luckily they can't. So long as you are not actually ill, hungry, frightened or immured in a prison or a holiday camp, spring is still spring. The atom bombs are piling up in the factories, the police are prowling through the cities, the lies are streaming from the loudspeakers, but the earth is still going round the sun, and neither the dictators nor the bureaucrats, deeply as they disapprove of the process, are able to prevent it.

Radical Chicago Hacker Pleads Guilty to Stratfor Leak
Hammond and others of his ilk like to style themselves as hackivists but their actions show them for what they are: petty criminals and online thugs.
While some journalists and many in the hacktivism community have somewhat romanticized Hammond's anarchist character and hailed him as a hero on social media, often comparing his situation to that of Aaron Swartz, Hammond has a long and sordid history. As a freshman at the University of Illinois Chicago, Hammond hacked into the website of his computer science department, which ultimately got him in trouble at the school, where he was not allowed to return the following year.
He was a well-known figure in the circles of protest movements, including that of black-bloc anarchists. In a span of three years, he'd been arrested ten times in three different states, according to a lengthy profile in Rolling Stone magazine.
In a speech at Defcon 2004, Hammond spoke on a panel about electronic civil disobedience, citing politicians and capitalists as problems that should be addressed by hacktivism.
Hammond previously spent time in prison for hacking credit card information from the right-wing website Protest Warrior, which was a counter-protest group to the anti-war protest movement. The website released details regarding the incident at the time, accusing Hammond of further using the attack to create public sympathy and to spread disinformation about the group.
In 2009, while still on probation for his prior arrest, Hammond was again arrested - this time during a protest in Chicago to oppose the proposed plan to host the Olympics, in which he burned the Olympic flag. While he could have received more prison time for violating his probation, he ended up with community service, a curfew and some very tight probation terms.
Remembering the Aleutian Battles
Fifteen months of warfare in the frost and fog of subarctic weather ought to be tough to forget. But seven decades after the fight for the Aleutian Islands reached its banzai climax on May 29, 1943, the mistake-plagued allied campaign to drive Japanese forces from North America remains "the forgotten battle."The campaign does rate a sensational headline: Japan Invades North America. The Aleutians campaign began in early June 1942 when a large Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) task force entered U.S. territorial waters and launched successful amphibious invasions of the Alaskan islands of Attu and Kiska.
Which leads to a second sensational headline: Japanese Invaders Conquer, Fortify U.S. Territory.
Obamacare: A New Surprise Everyday
Well they passed it and we're still finding out what's in it.
In a little-noticed speech to the Iowa Republican Party this month, Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul mocked President Obama's signature health care overhaul, noting the 122,000 new medical diagnostic codes doctors will have to use in order to inform the government about injuries sustained by Americans.
Those codes, said Sen. Paul, a medical doctor himself, include line-items for 'injuries sustained from a turtle,' 'walking into a lamppost' and 'injuries sustained from burning water skis.'
I thought this was just another euphemism for D-rape but apparently it's a real thang.
6 Dancers, 1 Transparent Stool
Your bourgeois world-view will be challenged by the transgressive act of...public shitting.
Difficult territory is a cornerstone of the visual arts - so artist Mikala Dwyer knew it would be confronting last night when she invited Balletlab dancers to empty their bowels as part of a performance at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art....The two-hour act saw the six dancers, masked but naked beneath sheer garments, move around a room in the gallery before sitting on transparent stools and performing - only if they were moved to do so - what is usually one of our most private and rarely discussed daily acts.
..."When Mikala brought this idea of a performance and film dealing with material transformation and ritual to us, we evaluated it as a key and bold move in her practice, one that links to a long artistic legacy looking at alchemical transformation and magical performance. The work, while challenging taboos, never becomes sensational or gratuitous. It's wonderful, powerful work."
Oh yes it's going to be powerful - which is why you don't want front row seats.

Has anybody else noticed the trend toward people needing so badly to feel special that even if they are a loser, they have to be a special type of loser?
For example, the mother of the kid who planned to blow up the high school in Oregon explained that her son had PANDAS (Pediatric autoimmune neurologic disorder after Streptococcus), and then explained that it is a "special kind of OCD". Not the garden variety of whack-o, but a special breed.
Or the whole nonsense of psychosexual identity- such that being a pervert is so mundane, being merely gay is boring, but being a transgendered, transitional polyamorous dolphin-loving coprophile is hip and edgy and cool?
And many of these "special" categories invoke blame on some entity outside of self, so the perverse specialness is somebody else's fault.
Or am I merely restating the obvious?

Re baby names: 18 years ago we were picking names for the twin daughters, Regrettably, we ruled out Polyhymnia and Terpsichore, but picked Emma for one daughter. It was a family name on both sides, solid, and distinctive (not a lot of Emmas around then, or so we thought) but not too unusual (like Maude or Gertrude).
Five years later there were three Emmas in her kindergarten class.

"Modern day nazis pledging their obedience to the State and the platform of state-sponsored terrorism - neo-fascist ProtestWarriors, you have been HACKED by your friendly neighborhood hacker anarchist =)
Right-wing extremists are modern-day brown shirts who abuse and harass activists who are fighting for social justice while claiming to be in the moral right. By infiltrating and crashing legal, peaceful assemblies, the ProtestWarriors are fighting against the democratic process while claiming to uphold the core values of this country. It is unpatriotic to blindly accept and obey the dogma of the ruling classes, and to lash out at peace activists who are trying to build a better world is intolerable. We're shutting you down.
Operation Liberty Rising is right. The Republicans think that they can rape NYC and the 9/11 attacks to further their political agenda of endless war and breaks for the rich upper classes and multinational corporations. The people of New York are rising up to let them know that they won't be getting away with it. Millions of people in the streets will be shutting the convention down, and your extremist right-wing minority can do nothing to stop it.
We\'re not fighting to put Kerry in office, and we're certainly not fighting for a socialist dictatorship. We are building a society free from all parasitic ruling classes... Democrats, Republicans, they're all on the same party of capitalism and the state. We dream of a world free from presidents and politicians who exploit us enslave us and do everything except represent us. We've had enough, and we will settle for nothing short of total world liberation for one and all. And we're willing to do whatever it takes to achieve these visions of a free society.
On our way to discovering what we love, we will discover everything we hate, everything that stands in the way of freedom and justice for all.
ProtestWarriors, give up! We have you surrounded and outnumbered. See you on the streets,
Before I go, some fun facts for the whole family: personal details of the head organizers of ProtestWarrior, complete with password information....
Hackers are organizing for a massive electronic civil disobedience campaign against the Republican party to coincide with the massive protests in New York City for the Republican National Convention. This document contains logistical information on how people can participate in this campaign...."
Then he gives tells his fellow hacktivists what they are going to be doing to disrupt the RNC convention. It's a long email but it ends thusly:
"That's all for today, kids. Stay out of trouble, and don't get caught!"

Jezebel is one of those Hebrew word-plays. It means "not exalted", or so say the baby books. Highly unlikely that the princess of Canaan was named this by her parents.
More likely her real name was "Promise of God". El-Izabet. . .

Detroit for the win. I don't give a dang about hockey, despite being Canadian, but my mother's family was from Detroit. But that's not why I want them to win.
Why Detroit then? Republican governor and most of the people that care about the Wings aren't in the dwindling city of Detroit. Chicago, for all the misery it helped supply to America, doesn't deserve the extra revenue that future playoff games will bring in. And if a few people in Chicago cry. or even off themselves after a loss, we all win.

Re: Baby Names:
The second fastest riser for boys was Gael, and for girls, Perla. Both names most likely are on the rise due to the increase in the Spanish-speaking population in the United States. Perla is the Latinized version of Pearl and is popular among Hispanic-Americans. GaelÂ’s popularity could be tied to Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal.

This yearÂ’s winners for biggest jump in popularity in the Top 500 are Major and Arya.
The fastest riser on the girls’ list may have been influenced by the popular cable TV series “Game of Thrones.” You also might trace Major’s increase in popularity to a cable TV show. “Home by Novogratz” is a popular home design show featuring Major Novogratz, the youngest son of designers Robert and Cortney.

There is something about biblical names that really appeals to me. I am not very religious, but a name like Noah or Jacob carries a burden for the owner to live up to, but it is most often a positive burden. And this is not to say that only Christian names can carry that weight. But most names with gravitas are based on various religious histories.
Example: Elizabeth vs. Brandy.

Yep. Whedon's "Firefly" and "Serenity" comprised one epic concern-troll against the Republican Party, from root to shrub.
He ended up uprooting the entirety of post-Civil-War liberalism, but this was by accident. I figure he realised his mistake when he (lamely) sold the series as being feminist, and totally not reactionary at all. Remember that "Equality Now!" shit he was selling?

So what Whedon had in mind for Firefly/Serenity came out as something else entirely by accident?? Maybe Tim Minear had something to do with the libertarian leanings of the show. In a way, having it get cancelled because of TV execs stupidity was a blessing. Whedon would have fucked it up eventually.

I've never seen anything like it. I rented a rototiller to chop up the grass and the top layer before I got down to planting, and damn near broke the thing. Top gear and it's wheezing and seizing.
No wonder the grass looked like hell. Not only was there NO topsoil under the sod, but the clay was so packed it had to have been done mechanically. Pick mattock barely scratched it.

Ouch, I have one of those. I don't use it except in the worst of gardening emergencies cuz the handle is starting to wear at the business end. I should get a new one, but I never remember when I'm at HD or Lowes.
Can't imagine going 100 feet with one, especially in this clay. My hat is off.
My mother got me a new pick for Christmas a few years back. Found it wrapped in tinfoil under the tree with a bow on it. Still laugh about it.

I don't get it either. In a very awkward way what I was trying to point out was that it is not the most important part of Morris' very substantive life whereas in today's Libland a person's sexual preference is what is touted as being so important. Like Jason what's his name who will be remembered more for being gay than basketball, a life well lived or anything else.
Morris is a favorite writer and I was just happy to see the ascent and the role she played in it.
Guess you had to be there --with me -- where I was not.

Except that really happened is you got to see what The Man Show was always like.
Rogan and Stanhope got suckered into doing the show with network promises that they could make The Rogan & Stanhope Show out of it. (Also, the checks were gigantic.) Then they weren't allowed to do or say any Rogan & Stanhope stuff, only Man Show crap.
Carolla & Kimmel are actors who play comedians. They can make any kind of garbage seem like you should laugh at it. Rogan & Stanhope are actual comedians (and Stanhope was, at the time, the best one). They can't sell any jokes but their own, and they're not really even sure about those.
The show was always a bag of shit, but when they hosted, the bag was clear plastic. That's all.

Is there a school out there giving degrees in left handed studies? Can I be the first to offer up my doctoral thesis in the field? It'll be completely illegible but trust me it's utterly brilliant and would make your brain drip out your ears if you comprehended an entire paragraph all at once.

Maybe already mentioned between there and here, but does anyone remember playing records that were on the back of cereal boxes?
For you young'uns, in the 60s there were cereal boxes where the record was printed on the outside of the box. Eat the cereal, cut the square record off the back of the box, and groove.
No cereal box records for me, but I had an Empire Strikes Back record book. Turn the page when R2-D2 beeps.

Ya, I figured it was a game thing. Haven't gotten into the multiplayer/online thing. Afraid to, actually. I have plenty of other things that enjoyably waste my time already without adding another one. (Not to mention the things that waste my time without so much entertaiment involved).

Sure it would. Lots of cereal boxes had CD glued to them in the late 90s. Once broadband became common enough it was easier to offer URLs and QR codes.

my wife shared with me something her father, a 94-year-old, WWII veteran (and survivor of a Nazi POW camp, having been shot down as a B-17 navigator in the first American raid over Berlin) said at a recent family get-together.
He said he finally realized he was getting old, when he looked around and all of his children (and spouses of children) sitting at the table were retired, including me and my wife (who admittedly retired very, very early).
Pretty funny, really, but poignant, too.

The problem is the amount of time taken up figuring out all the codes...
and all the time wasted by Drs offices with question from Medicare and Medicaid about the billing codes.
The Government is forcing everyone to use this... and its another unfunded mandate... so THEY can gather all this information about us.
(and yes.... I do IT support for Electronic Medical Records systems... so see this every day).

On another site, there was a link to a list of things that were a sign that you were getting old. That list seemed to be geared towards 30-year-olds.
One of them was that Trix cereal was no longer shaped like pieces of fruit. That was news to me. I never knew it was. That little trend passed me by completely.
Posted by: rickl at May 30, 2013 01:34 AM (sdi6R)
I'm 31 and remember Trix not being fruit shaped and their big campaign when they changed it to fruit shape.
I think a better one would be remembering that Cinamon Toast Crunch once had 3 mascots for it.

Just because something is international doesn't mean its worth a shit.
If Obamacare forces doctors to adopt it, then it part of Obamacare.

I didn't say replace... but do we need an expansion? Heck.... we just had an expansion...
The one thing you can always count on the Government to do, is over complicate everything.... where they take something needed... and turn it from workable, to ridiculous.
Its like the IRS and taxes... they took a needed government function, the gathering of taxes, and its now become so complex it has its own support industry, Lawyers, and huge group of government employees... and if you can afford to pay into that industry (like GE or Apple) you can pay less net taxes...

And the BEST part??? The Government is all over the billing codes... but has not come up with a standard format for medical records.... so records are not transferable from one Electronic Medical Record system to another...

Greetings Dr. Gorpenpheiffer,
A recent audit of your medical treatment classifications has turned up some disturbing lapses in quality.
For example, last month you treated a Mr. Carl Ploof for a head injury you classified as: "Other" and described as "Patient had a rubber chicken nailed to his forehead with three shots from a Paslode nail gun by drunken friends".
Not only did you fail to describe the type and size of the nails, you also failed to describe if the chicken was a rooster or hen.
12p common nail w/Rooster rubber chicken is a number 153288 classification, w/Hen its a 153289. Roofing nails are 153278/9 respectively for rooster/hen.
This grievous oversight compels us to take corrective action. You are fined $50,000 payable immediately, or your medical license will be revoked.

Eh, who am I to talk, I bought a rolex some years back and told the wife I did it because james bond probably has one. Funny true story. In the early 90's my brother bought a white neck-through solotist type charvel. His wife got pissed and goes and buys a new car, it started a chain reaction of other events that ended up in divorce. years later I was at his house and was playing the charvel, and its a fucking dream to play. My brother looks at me and says "yeah, that guitar cost me my first wife".
Without missing a beat I look up with a smile and said "good fucking trade". lol

Dive gear is life support gear. I remember one time we were off on a trip and someone was sneering: "oh, those little candy-ass dive computers. Whatcha gonna do when the battery goes out and you're completely screwed?"
So I reach into the BC pocket and say, "I'll just whip out this one." The BH and I always dove with three computers and we were constantly comparing our air usage -- so even if mine (integrated with air) gave out, we'd have a pretty good idea where we stood.
