"What's it going to be then, eh?"There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim. Dim being really dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar making up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening, a flip dark chill winter bastard though dry. The Korova Milkbar was a milk-plus mesto, and you may, O my brothers, have forgotten what these mestos were like, things changing so skorry these days and everybody very quick to forget, newspapers not being read much neither. Well, what they sold there was milk plus something else. They had no licence for selling liquor, but there was no law yet against prodding some of the new veshches which they used to put into the old moloko, so you could peet it with vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom or one or two other veshches which would give you a nice quiet horrorshow fifteen minutes admiring Bog And All His Holy Angels and Saints in your left shoe with lights bursting all over your mozg. Or you could peet milk with knives in it, as we used to say, and this would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of dirty twenty-to-one, and that was what we were peeting this evening I'm starting off the story with.
Our pockets were full of deng, so there was no real need from the point of view of crasting any more pretty polly to tolchock some old veck in an alley and viddy him swim in his blood while we counted the takings and divided by four, nor to do the ultra-violent on some shivering starry grey haired ptitsa in a shop and go smecking off with the till's guts. But, as they say, money isn't everything.
Read the rest here.

New Civility I: Dan Savage Wishes Cancer on Sarah Palin
Dan Savage has a long history of being a nasty asshole. One day he will die and the world will be a slightly better place.

Not even hiding it anymore.
Student-loan company Sallie Mae SLM -1.35% canceled a $225 million bond offering on Thursday after about two weeks on the market, according to people familiar with the deal. The move may mark a line in the sand: Investors whose thirst for yield has revived all manner of riskier asset classes decided they weren't getting paid enough to buy at the offered price amid rising student-loan defaults.
A Whole Lotta Admirals - Not So Many Indians
In World War II, there were 30 Navy ships for every admiral. Now, the Navy has more admirals than ships. That's a point not lost on Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner.
"I want to see the Pentagon cut back on some of this "brass creep" both in terms of numbers and some of these perks," Warner said.
Not long ago, the Navy forced out 3,000 mid-career sailors.
... the Pentagon has added admirals and generals. There are now nearly a thousand. Many of those top officers are surrounded with entourages including chauffeurs, chefs and executive aids. Top flag officers have private jets always at the ready. They live in sometimes palatial homes and frequently travel in motorcades. Former Democratic Senator Jim Webb asked the Pentagon why the Air Force has more four-star generals than the Army, even though the Army has almost twice the manpower. Across all service branches, Warner said, the number of people at the bottom has shrunk while the number of generals and admirals has swelled.
Dying Career #2: ReporterThey say a species must adapt or die, and with the trend of the Internet replacing print journalism (you are reading this on the computer, after all), media folks who don't adjust might not survive too much longer. In short, many reporters could be going the way of their typewriters soon.
Projected Decline: Reporter and correspondent positions are expected to decline by 8 percent from 51,900 jobs in 2010 to 48,000 in 2020, for a total of nearly 4,000 jobs lost, says the U.S. Department of Labor
Well given their recent performance and shameless and open bias maybe it should be considered a suicide.
But unfortunately for one of them, Amanda Berry and her family, her mother didn't live to see this day. Berry's mother Louwana Miller died in 2006 at the age of 44 from complications of pancreatitis. Well-known TV psychic Sylvia Browne had told her back in 2004 that Amanda was dead, and her mother said that after that she "lost it" (meaning, lost hope that her daughter was alive).
But don't sit on a hot stove waiting for an apology from Browne. And I bet her admirers will be making excuses for her.
On Monday Amanda Berry was found alive in Cleveland.
Wait I Thought Only Religious Fanatics Burned Books?!
Oh okay - they are religious fanatics. And so heretical writings must be destroyed.
Maybe not so much.
When kids tell you that they have been working on their homework for so loooong, don't believe it. They're probably spending over 35% of their time doing other things like checking their email or Facebook. And that is the number that is determined simply from watching them for 15 minutes and when they know they're being observed. Imagine how much more distracted they are when they're in their bedrooms without being watched after a long than 15-minute time span.

For those who don't know, I recently published a book (which received a mention in Sunday's book thread). My book is entitled "My Teachers are Zombies" and I would say it is in the children's novel genre.
It's the nice story of three friends who discover their teacher is a zombie who is trying to make their brains bigger so as to eat them later (with a dash of pepper).
I would like to encourage people to at least read the sample provided on the Amazon page (available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKJ70AW) and if it catches your interest, please feel free to purchase it or gift it to a friend!
I double edited it as well, to avoid the common spelling and grammar mistakes that plague most first time writers (of course, mentioning that guarantees at least two errors will crop up in this message). I also made sure there was a bit of light foreshadowing, use of Chekov's gun, and lamp-shading. Additionally, it's a self-contained story, not a series, which appeals to me in an era of unnecessary trilogies and sequels.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Funny, the carpet bagger comment.
I was listening to the live audio feed on last night's NC legislature vote on relaxing gun control. I heard some of the most obnoxious, outside the state voices, who were wailing, bitching, and moaning about the vote that was about to occur. I thought, "Where in the eff did these people come from, and who the hell voted them into office???"

RE: Anthony Burgess and Clockwork Orange
Well worth hunting down is his book 1985, which is his spin on Orwell's 1984, crossed with some of the language games from Orange.
Also, a bleak as hell anti-socialist novel that predicted the rise of Islamic Britain. Would never get published today. Heck, they've probably Fahrenheited most copies by now.

A lot of the brass creep in the last 50 years is due to infrastructure. You want to deploy the 82nd Airborne Division anywhere in the world in 48 hours? That requires a significant amount of logistical tail that someone has to manage. You want a worldwide communications network so that a battalion intel analyst can view a video feed from a Predator drone overhead in Africa that's being flown by a controller in Nevada, and said analyst then sends his data reports in real time to another analyst in West Virginia? That takes a significant amount of capability and people to manage it. The officers in charge will ultimately have to be a certain rank at minimum to have any influence, which is why you see one stars popping up like weeds.
I'm not saying it's perfect, or even necessarily desirable, just that it is.

In other news, my second-degree burn from last week's distraction due to bad week has a spot on it that I am convinced is turning into flesh-eating disease.
I was writing down French phrases for my upcoming trip like "Help, am being robbed by street urchins even though I left all of my jewelry at home and carry a baton Sven told me about." I noticed in Bruges, Belgium there is a longbow museum in my frantic research (I do not know why I am bothering to "research" as between jet lag, eating only cheese and bread due to fear of food disease in foreign lands, drinking wine to kill foreign germs, fear of bird flu, plague, and being on the wrong side of the Atlantic during an atomic bomb, it will all be one big ole train-blur). Had I not regularly read Ace of Spades I would just pass on this golden opportunity of a longbow museum. Somehow I want to go see these moron artifacts.

I often thought I should have a whip and a chair anytime I entered the house. Really..., I was constantly covered with half-healed claw marks. Anyhow, I went on a two-week camping trip and boarded the little bugger with the local vet. They, incidentally, always handled him with leather gloves and apron. When I got back, I went to fetch him, and to my surprise, the girlie who brought him out just carried him out and plopped him on the counter. Curious as to how he had behaved, I asked the girl, "How'd he do?" She looked at me quizzically for a moment and replied, "Well, howdy-do to you too!"

@ bomber #64: Yeah, we have waay too many flag (general) officers.
There's no good reason the O-7/10 ranks could not be purged by two thirds, starting w/ general staffs (bloated Pentagon staff for each sevice's Chief of Staff or CNO), accompanied by shelving some of the Unified Commands.
There is *no* good reason for a CinC for Africa, other than domestic identity politics. Same is probably true for Southern Command, and our entire European Command (that's the 'U.S.' hat many flag officers sport) and U.S. flag officers in NATO. That area is filled w/ tin hat mostly 'fake' flag officers representing Eurpean militaries that haven't been relevant for a very long time, but our liaison w/ them provides a fig leaf excuse for our services to create equivalently ranked officers for 'coordination.' Though I realize this in not PC, I don't give a damn.
Best Regards,
PS: must admit that Brit military is unusually effective for a force that size, and that the German's have quite a force, though they haven't had any political spine in applying it to useful tasks.

We have every pharmacy need covered, we think. And we are going to civilized countries! Personally, I don't care where his carcass is buried. It's worm food.
It's odd, to me, that a big deal is being made in MA against burial, but the same people have no issue with the other just-as-guilty Tsaernev receiving top-notch medical care in MA.
You feel me? One brother is dead and really hated. But the alive brother is being given the best of care. Something is strange about this arrangement.

Eh. IOTW, Geller and the rest of the gang often to play the 3-degrees-of-separation game when it comes to Muslim extremists. Somehow there's a Jihadi (or Jihadi associate or a friend of a known associate of a Jihadi-type) under every roof and if you don't go along with their judgment or quibble about it, well then you're now just another Dhimmi.
They tried to do the same thing to Rick Perry over Aga Khan. The fact that Stein turned out to be a Holocaust denier still doesn't make Perry an Islam-luvin' dhimmi either.

Since I live in Northern Commiefornia, which is ground zero for every possible New Age astral psychic voodoo pyramid-power malarkey you could ever imagine, I have to point out that many of the victims, oops I mean customers, of these charlatans are just affluent liberal dimwits with nothing in particular wrong with them except for a troubling sense of gaping emptiness. A gaping emptiness which is, although they don't realize it, located between their ears.
I used to think this was incredibly awesome. Lefty twits in Marin County think that cholangiocarcinoma will be cured by aromatherapy? Sweet. Fewer lefty twits? Win. Lefty twits paying out of pocket to remove themselves from the gene pool on their own dime? Win-win.
Except now I am realizing that in the age of Obamacare, it is going to be your and my privilege to pay handsomely for the lefty twits to receive their quackery of choice. Worse yet, when someday it might be you or me who is diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, in the age of Obamacare, aromatherapy might be the only available medical care left. So, not quite so incredibly awesome after all.

I would be surprised if they are available, but who knows? I am quite certain that the equivalent of Gilbert Chemistry sets are verboten, because, well, we can not allow our little darlings to be around stuff that might be 'dangerous'. Ironically, if you possessed a Gilbert set today, the stuff that we played with (and learned from) would be considered 'bomb making materials'.

I have bought your book for my kindle, and will see how it is. If I like it, I will buy copies for my two nephews, because I like to buy them books that they can enjoy and also to inoculate them against their public school.

When I watch TV shows, old and new, and see airplanes, I look up their registration numbers on the FAA website to see where they are now and who owns them.
For instance, I'm watching Mission: Impossible (circa 1970) right now and just saw a twin-engine (Beechcraft, I think) with the reg. N822Q(uebec) .
Now I'll look it up...
...
It's a 1960 Beechcraft Queen Air, still in service! Owner is Phoenix Air East, Miami, FL.

Small airplanes are worth big bucks and have been since about 25 yrs ago. They seem to appreciate in value every year.
Anyway, that's why you'll see a lot of really old planes still in service. But I have this crazy theory that any day now a lot of these 40, 50 yr old planes are gonna break up and kill a lot of people.
50 years of age and 50 yrs of flight is helluva lotta stress on those thin aluminum frames.

A newbie Navy Corpsman was given an assignment to be the only Corpsman assigned to a V.I.P in the "Large Private Room" on the 9th floor of Navy Regional Medical Center Oakland.....aka..."Oak Knoll." She was a very sweet and very sharp 80+ year old female with silver blond hair who insisted I call her "Julia" but military bearing and all the sharp looks from the frequent brass that always seemed to be in her room was enough to tell me to ALWAYS call her "Mrs. Nimitz!"

My hubby works in A & P, and the rivets are changed out if they are looking odd. They run tests on the various parts of the airplanes, and the planes get good looking over every so many flight hours.
They are still flying Huies from Viet Nam where he works, and many, many other old aircraft are still in the air.
There are protocols which are performed regularly on all of the airplanes, at specified intervals.

The Germans tried to lock up all the trouble maker POWs in a castle. All it did was encourage them to new feats of annoying the Germans and/or escaping.
Wolfenstein?
So I got another hour and a half in on Neverwinter today before I got randomly disconnected. Main question-is the auction house interface supposed to eventually sort entries? There's a button for current bid, but it only refreshes the list (in no particular order) when I hit it. I'm a little worried because it looks an awful lot like the troubled AH interface from Star Trek Online.

Yeah, that's what's worrying me. Selling junior officers was a bitch and a half for months before they organized them by specialty because the engine would only ever list 400 entries, and not necessarily the cheapest ones.
And don't get me started on the lulz that were Cardassian lockboxes.
I should log back in, left my Lvl 6 Cleric at the entry to the were-rats.
Heh. I was on my way there when I got dumped on my rogue.

We all know what would happen if it was a republican in the White House.
If there was a republican in the White House, dems in Congress would be holding hearings over all the muslims who got gunned down in front of the embassy while peacefully protesting.

Between them and the families of those killed in Benghazi, maybe a few sheeple will wake up to the reality that we have an administration that hates its own citizens and those who protect them. It does seem like the dam is starting to break a little. The Atlantic and the NYT wrote articles vindicating Breitbart about Pigford, whoda thunk that would ever happen. I thought the tide would turn years ago, so my expectations are low, but nothing is impossible.

Ambassador Rice, a member of President ObamaÂ’s cabinet who has served as the countryÂ’s U.N. Representative since early 2009, will be honored for her work in advancing U.S. interests, strengthening the worldÂ’s common security and prosperity, and promoting respect for human rights.
I personally think that she should win an Oscar for her performance in

It ain't just the house (which is freakishly expensive), it's what comes with it. My city council recently decided to charge $4,000 per person on citizens' credit for a sports facility, then distribute the liability to holders of real estate in the city -- since they can't move the property outside while citizens can up and move. Gee, thanks.
Altogether, there are only 38 million Californians....and an estimated $1.1T in debt [http://tinyurl.com/cx5wjcf] -- which works out to about $28,947 per person. If we had a house in MO, the debt per citizen is only $7,607 [http://tinyurl.com/32nvypz]-- meaning that our two-person household would have an immediate gain of $42,680 by moving, irrespective of house costs.
While traveling recently in North Carolina, I visited a few Home Depot and Lowe's stores....and found a bunch of merchandise labeled "Not for sale in California". You'd think with what we're obligated to pay to live here we could do anything we damned-well pleased....but, unless it involves deviant sexual practices, counterproductive economic theories, anti-human "science", or harmful drugs....you'd be wrong.

Is this your personal laptop or is it a work-supplied machine? It sounds like a lot of stuff is under lockdown. Are you logged in as an administrator? If not, do you have access to such an account, even if only on the local level?
According to many sites the model you have has an ATI 5470 GPU with 1 GB of dedicated RAM but that may have been optional and you may only have the built-in video that comes with the processor. If it has the ATI you should be more than covered for that game.
As someone else mentioned already, going to Dell support and entering the Service Tag (seven digit alpha-numeric string that should be on the underside of the unit) will pull up the specific info on that unit.

I picked up some of the Free After Rebate PC games from Newegg recently, just to have stuff to fool around with. I tried Venetica on my Core i5 HD4000 system and it works pretty well. The tech of the game itself isn't great. It looks like something that was halfway through development as a PS2/Xbox/GameCube title and retargeted to the Xbox 360 and PS3.
They tried to model the skull inside characters' heads so that they have realistic teeth but it looks like a T-800 in an early rubber prototype of a human disguise before Skynet figured out how to use real flesh.
That aside, the environments are pretty and the frame rate is good. Sot he IGa isn't as hopeless for gaming as it once was. A $100 video card would still make a big improvement but the gap isn't Grand Canyon wide any more. Plenty of older games going for cheap should be just fine.

You need to get yourself an Alton Brown cookbook, because after you have read that there would be no need to ask that question.
Howver, braising is normally for a thicker cut with a lot of connective tissue (to provide dissolved/rendered collagens, etc.) . Not really for pork chops at all (too lean), more for (in the pork family at least) butt or shoulder.

If you read English lit from prior to about 1930, you are likely to have encountered "mustard plasters" and "drawing salves".....and figured that these were now-discredited semi-fictitious folk-remedies rather than the "deus ex machina" called upon by the works involved.
While I still haven't tried a mustard plaster, I had an older Kaiser doctor recommend a particular "horse liniment" for a boil when I was in my teens.....and was totally amazed by the results. It's one of the classic "drawing salves" and it is very weird stuff.
It looks and smells like tar.....and will suck splinters to the surface of the skin, pus out of boils, and venom from spider and insect bites and stings. You get explanations like, "As the ointment is absorbed by the skin, the salve softens the tissue around the affected area, weakening it to increase blood circulation. The increased circulation works to help push the foreign object to the surface and expel it from the body" or "medical experts don't know exactly how it works". Funny thing, though....it works.
It's not easy to find -- sometimes "behind the counter" in pharmacies. Horse people frequently have it in tubs. When I've used it for boils, it will sometimes leave a dark stain where the boil used to be, so you may want to use caution where you use it.......but its results are obvious and rapid.
In general, I'm pretty supportive of the superiority of Western Medicine -- I consider a lot of alternative therapies to be wishful thinking (at best).....but this little piece of the "old school" methods is pretty convincing.

You've probably heard about leeches making a comeback in medical applications involving similar problems. They been able to save limbs from becoming gangrenous due to circulation issues. The leeches act like little vacuum pumps, sucking blood into areas that weren't being adequately supplied.
And of course, there are maggots. The right variety is only interested in necrotic tissue and does a far better job of clearing it away from a wound than any human surgeon who has to rely on eyeballing the site rather than actually tasting the tissue in the area.

If you're not tired of me now, you can try and get me started on traditional, old-school dietary traditions vs. the "Food Pyramid" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid] which is f'ing TOXIC.
How 'bout we talk about doggehs?

I think of modern doctors mostly as High-Tech Retards, but otherwise I get what you're saying.
There's a lot of alternative crap, but there's a lot of non-alternative crap. And some gold in either place.
Generally speaking, don't go to a witch-doctor for a broken limb or surgery, tho. Trust me on this one.
On the other hand, Allopathic medicine is teh suck at systemic disorders, allergies, and having a nurse give you the right medicine. And returning phone calls.

They started with science, then spent so much of their efforts to make themselves into a favored guild....just think of where we'd be if we let free markets sort wheat from chaff.

I worked with a guy that loved games but got horrible motion sickness. I got him started on ginger tea and ginger candies, he was shocked at how well it worked. He started drinking the stuff every day before lunch so he could join us for games during the break.
May work, may not, worth a try if you can stand ginger.

The BH would breakfast upon ginger snaps when we would SCUBA in choppy locations.

It would not surprise me at all if the current divide between success and failure in medical practices arose from insurance coding quirks.
