Take the Pew Research Science and Technology Quiz
Other than a trick question or two it's easy - so if you score 11 or less you must wear the Cone of Shame during the entire ONT.
Wait - There's a New #1 Beauty!
And according to Maxim it's this:
Guess The Party: The Cleveland Kidnapper
Ariel Castro's party affiliation wasn't mentioned in any MSM article and you know what that means.
Obama and Why Community Organizer Tactics Don't Work When You're President
Sequestration and gun control are just his latest failures at using Alinsky tactics to get what he wants. But that's really all he's got.
Power constrains because it entails responsibility, and Alinskyite tactics are designed to take advantage of those constraints for the benefit of the powerless. Such tactics have backfired on Obama repeatedly because he seems not to understand that they are ill-suited to power politics.
Pierce Brosnan: OMG The Military Is Killing Whales!!
The U.S. Navy has new plans for testing and training exercises with sonar and explosives -- and those plans spell disaster for whales. If the Navy proceeds, more than 1,000 whales and other marine mammals could be killed over the next five years. There will be 5,000 cases of serious injury such as permanent hearing loss or lung damage, as well as tens of millions of incidents in which marine mammals are harassed or harmed.
I have no reason to doubt these alarming numbers. They come from the Navy itself.
The sheer scope of the Navy's plan is staggering. The Navy would detonate more than 50,000 underwater explosives each year off the coast of Southern California alone. Hundreds of these explosives pack enough charge to sink a warship, which is exactly what they're used for.
And our own CDR M who has actual real-life first hand experience with US Navy live ordnance training exercises (as opposed to an aging actor who once co-acted with a prop torpedo) says bullshit:
No way in hell we are firing 50,000 live torpedoes (he did say underwater explosions capable of sinking a ship) off the coast of SOCAL! HE 5 inch rounds wouldn't be classified as underwater explosions and we don't exactly have thousands of HE mines deployed off SOCAL. And BTW, at least on the east coast, we can't even fire HE 5 in. rounds so he's full of shit. We basically train with slugs of concrete or spit wads. Most air dropped ordnance are concrete shapes. Hellfires are what we usually see fired from aircraft in an exercise. Sometimes we'll get the periodic Maverick/Harpoon shot. Again, the total numbers of those type shots are in double digits.Sonar use is very restricted, especially near the coast. Most of all SW events occur beyond 200NM from the coast. Again, in all cases, if biologics are detected by ANY means, the event is can'xed.
I guess Pierce has never heard of PMAP (Protective Measures Assessment Protocol). Every single live fire event (and active sonar use) requires this software to be run and then be signed by the Commanding Officer. Check out all of the environmental stuff the Navy has in lace at the link below. It's a big bucket of cold water on Pierce's assertion that the Navy has NO common sense plans/training in place.
Reason #78 why they're called actors and not actor-thinkers.
It's good to be part of the patrician class.
At Washington's Reagan National Airport, they have their own special parking spaces-right up close to the terminal-that they don't even have to pay for. As Bloomberg Television's Hans Nichols reports, this perk costs the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority $738,760 in foregone revenue. (The best part of this clip, though, is seeing Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky haul ass to get away from Bloomberg's cameraman.)Being a member of Congress also means never having to rush to catch a flight. The airlines allow lawmakers the special privilege of simultaneously booking themselves on multiple flights, so that if they are late or their flight is canceled, they're guaranteed a spot on the next one. A few years ago, a prominent senator paused in the middle of a conversation with me to bark at an aide, "Book me on the 6, 7, and 8 p.m. shuttles!"
To members of our fly-in-Tuesday-fly-home-Thursday Congress, these perks are a big deal. Most fly a lot, and many fly first class.
And here are some more Congressional perks.
I don't agree with the tag line but otherwise it's a masterpiece of advertising. Watch it and then watch it again and you'll realize there were subtle clues all along.
Alabama Finally Legalizes Home Brewing
It was the last state to do so. Sometimes a party changeover really does bring change.
And bonus points if you can name the president who first made home brewing legal nationally without reading the article.

Time to get busy. Those models won't rework themselves.

And apparently there were far more than my oblivious pre-pubescent mind ever realized. And yeah I guess in retrospect it might seem a bit unlikely that the native women on every podunk planet in the Federation just happened to be into minis when NCC-1701 pulled into orbit.

So, I can burn ancient woven insulation off 3/8" copper wire without melting any copper, right?
Because they pay about $1 a pound for copper with insulation, and $3 a pound if clean. I have about 90 pounds, of which about 20 pounds has insulation cover.

"Purified nitrogen is more stable and less corrosive than a compressed version of the air we breathe. By its lonesome, nitrogen clumps in large molecules. Even better, it's not oxygen, which is the root of oxidation, which eats rubber just like steel, just not as dramatically or visibly. All of this means the gas has two things going for it."

Worried so much, the dadster got me some fuckin' electronic tire gauge. Which I have never even thought about using. For those unaware, I recently published a children's novel called "My Teachers are Zombies!" which had the good fortune of being mentioned in last Sunday's Book thread.
It's a tale for morons of all ages. Family friendly with the underlying message: your teacher might be a zombie who wants to eat your brains (there's no social commentary in this book, at all).
I would like to encourage people to at least read the sample provided on the Amazon page (available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKJ70AW) and if it catches your interest, please feel free to purchase it or gift it to a friend!

Okay, times up.
Water vapor is over ten time higher concentration in the atmosphere than CO2, and is also a stronger "greenhouse" gas.
Greenhouse gas is made up, you say? Without some measure of the "greenhouse" effect, the Earth would be in a perpetual ice age. In fact, during historical ice ages, most of the free fresh water was tied up in ice and glaciers, meaning the atmosphere was drier, keeping the Earth cold.
And no one seems to be able to explain what ended the various Ice Ages, either.
Freeman Dyson determined that the net effect of man-caused global warming was that in cold dry places (like the Antarctic, northern Siberia and northern Canada) the world would get a little warmer. Freeman Dyson, one of the most brilliant men alive today (holds the same position as Albert Einstein did at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies) has been ostracized by much of "organized science" because he does not buy into the total global warming craze.

Truer words were never spoken.
They are afraid to express an opinion without the approval of the herd.
They are afraid to think, because it might lead to the formation of an opinion contrary to the herd. Look what happened to David Mamet.
Their media prominently features stories reassuring them that they need not be informed about whatever Fox News may be on about. They can stay safe, in their little cocoons, feeling a warm, smug sense of being right, without having to expend effort.

The example I recall used a glass milk bottle, with a splinter burned inside, then a hard boiled (but not *too* hard bolied) egg placed on the neck of the bottle. If the egg was just right, it got sucked into the bottle as it cooled. If too hard boiled, there was generally an egg explosion.

On Thursday, Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell signaled that they would keep working to keep opposition alive by doing everything they can to impede the board's implementation.
The two leaders wrote a letter to President Barack Obama, notifying him that they would not be submitting any recommendations to the panel because of their opposition to it and to the law in general.

Ok, is it just me or does that irritate anyone else? My 15 year old "graduated" from grade school, then she "graduated" from middle school.
I didn't "graduate" crap till after I completed my senior year in high school. I guess back then we didn't think getting through grade school or middle school was an "accomplishment", it was just expected.
Of course back then you couldn't get a trophy just for showing up either.

The US embassy in Mexico City could not be reached for independent verification.
Mr Shabazz, who described himself on Twitter as the "grandson, name-sake and first male heir of the greatest revolutionary leader of the 20th century", is best known for the killing of his grandmother, Malcolm X's widow.
As a 12-year-old he set fire to the apartment in Yonkers, New York, where Betty Shabazz was sleeping. She died of her injuries three weeks later.

Israel Unveils Plans For 300 Settler Homes
Israel has unveiled plans to build nearly 300 new homes near the West Bank's de facto capital, Ramallah, dispelling hopes it was ready to apply a settlement freeze to revive peace talks with the Palestinians.
A spokesman for Israel's civil administration, which is responsible for non-military affairs in the occupied Palestinian territories, said the houses would be built in Beit El, where around 6,000 mainly religious settlers already live.
The announcement followed earlier reports that Mr Netanyahu, the prime minister, had ordered a temporary halt to new tenders for settlement programmes after promising John Kerry, the US secretary of state, that he would "rein in" new building to help American efforts to restart the peace process.

That's just stupid. Salary, in many cases, is based in some measure on the "perceived importance" of the job or the talent pool (how many people can do this job). Having a person who has a direct hand in running and managing the country make minimum wage is just idiotic.

Exactly my point. They're not just "regular citizens". So getting free parking is perfectly legitimate. Most other jobs that require flying back and forth every week also provide free parking for the employee. I know I flew a hell of a lot and I always had my airport parking paid for. Had my employer said I needed to pay the $100 a week out of pocket I would have probably told him to fuck off and quit. Why do you think it's so outrageous that we (employer) pay the employee's (senator) parking costs?

Yes the cows are almost a 100 yards from the house so I travel every day. The point I was making was when costs are hidden in any business it leads to corruption of the system. If a large dollar amount spent can't be found on a spread sheet in normal business it's a problem in govt it's an opportunity. Unless your arguing this has no cost.

Yes. It. Does. You really need to get out a little more.
It's not flying on a whim. It's a standard agreement. Mon-Thursday on-site, Friday-Sunday at home.
The jobs I'm talking about are consultants, engineers, lawyers, investment bankers that bill (or their employers bill) $200, 300, 400 500 an hour for their work. When a client is paying that much money an hour, paying an extra $2K a week for travel is a drop in the bucket.
A senator is at that caliber. We're not talking about a construction worker making $40K a year who moves to another city for a job. We're talking high paid, white collar jobs. And in that case, travel home every week is normal and expected.

Another good example is my all-time favorite director, Stanley Kubrick. He made both Lolita and Dr. Strangelove within four (!!) years, 2001 in four years, A Clockwork Orange in three, The Shining in five, and Eyes Wide Shut in... eleven.

Account for the cost on a real accounting ledger that links to a real budget and make a reasonable number of trips back home to the family. I rarely see the VP of our division cause he is always out of town I'm guessing he sees his family at a similar regularity.

I wouldn't say every week but I've known plenty of who lived in alternate cities a week at a time because of their job. There is some stuff that telepresence just won't adequately cover.
There used to be so much back and forth travel between Silicon Valley and Austin, TX, it became known as the Nerd Bird. Two daily direct flights between two locations an outsider to the tech business would not have guessed had a need. There also used to be heavy traffic between Silicon Valley and Denver, CO because nearby Longmont was the global heart of the hard drive business, due to former IBM engineers leaving to start their own companies and drawing from the talent pool IBM had drawn there.

$200/hr x 40hrs = $8000/wk
Travel per week = $2000/wk
That's an cost increase of 25%. Which means the end consumer is getting doinked for that.
$500/hr x 40hrs = $20,000
Travel per week = $2,000
That's a cost increase of 10%
In either instance, that's kinda impact on the cost of business that virtually every single business would seek to avoid. Those are not drops in the bucket.
Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at May 10, 2013 12:00 AM (GEICT)
+++++++++++
And if they didn't pay for travel one of two things would happen
1. The bill rate would be increased by $2000 a week spread out over 40 hours.
2. The project wouldn't be done because there wouldn't be any people willing to stay in but fuck nowhere for 6 months while the work was getting done.
Once again, these are highly paid, sought after employees with lots of other options. Tell them they can't fly home every week and they'll go elsewhere. And this isn't a case of someone "moving to a city" for a job. This is the case of the job moves to a city. As a consultant every few months you start a new job in a new city. You don't move, the job moves and you go to the job.

Sure they are. Every parking spot has a cost associated with it in building it, maintaining it, paying liability insurance for it, etc. And there's an opportunity cost associated as well in buildings where parking costs money. Give the VP a free spot, that's $15 an hour you're not charging someone else to occupy that spot. Everything has a cost whether direct or indirect.

Mr. Moo Moo,
The part I would object to is the special treatment at the airport parking, as SEVERAL commenters have mentioned above.
The "special" parking lot right next to the terminal. The fact that they book several flights, and probably don't have to pay a penalty for the ones they cancel.
The fact that they fly MORE THAN ONCE a week a lot of times.
Whenever I have flown for business and been reimbursed, I have to fill out an expense report and have been reimbursed after the fact.
There is no special treatment because I am flying as a business person.
That is exactly how they should be treated.

Re: The steam cleaning
Some years ago after I retired from the service, I got a job maintaining molding machines. We had a guy moving wastewater and waste oil from a trench in one part of the building to another trench on the other side. To speed up the process of emptying the 500 gallon tank, he connected air to it and opened the drain valve. Well, some dirt and stuff plugged the drain valve and when he realized it, he walked over to see what was wrong. The tank blew up and launched like a rocket about 150-200 yards away and blew half his head off. He died at the scene. 110 pounds of air continuously filling a tank that was not meant to be pressurized is incredibly dangerous and can take your life.

Here's some helpful stuff to think about re A Clockwork Orange:
- It's an ***EXTREMELY*** dark comedy.
- The theme really boils down to no more than a struggle between freedom and security. The government in ACO is the security state at its worst... and Alex is freedom, at ITS worst.
- I really believe that after the incredible success of 2001, Kubrick really wanted to see how far he could push the envelope in terms of throwing outrageous images onto the screen before people would either scream, throw up, or have a seizure.

Depends how good of a gun you need it to be. The basics have been well established for a very, very long time. You could probably learn pretty much all you needed to know from a good century old book on the subject of gun design.
It's the testing and refinement of the design that would be costly. A lot of time and sunk costs and prototypes, especially testing with safety protocols to avoid the nasty things that can happen with a flawed design in a human hand. Back in the day there was a certain amount of risk for the user.

You're not alone in your dislike of it either. Roger Ebert gave it a lackluster review in 1971. Pauline Kael supposedly hated it. And Andrew Sarris, whom I've read was ultra-liberal/leftist, not only condemned it, but wrote something about it at the time along the lines of "I'm tired of freedom of speech becoming a license to hurt other people these days."
Kubrick finally self-censored the film around 1973, after (1) the guy who shot George Wallace claimed he was inspired to do so by the character of Alex, and (2) Kubrick himself started getting really creepy threats that his family was in mortal danger, all over the phone, from untraceable numbers. Bear in mind, Kubrick NEVER gave his personal phone number or information to anybody outside of his most personal circle... which totaled about four people in 1971.
So the movie's never exactly been a crowd-pleaser.

45 minutes later-Oh do another qualified foundry quest for 1000AD. Grr. And you have to click each mission to check the description as to whether it's qualified or not. And they don't seem to be marked for whether you've done them before. Nor is there an indication of where they are (though they may be filtered for area and level range in some nontransparent way-I couldn't tell).
45 minutes later and level 11. Now they're both good quests, so no complaints there, I just would like to feel a little more like I have some idea what decisions I'm making. Then I figure I'll go check out this chick who's always droning something about the gods whenever I wander past.
So apparently, once per hour with one click you can get 1000+AD. Awesome. I also note that Zen seems to be getting cheaper every day. Though It looks like I'm going to go through an awful lot of AD before I can buy anything in the store.
Finally, I maxed out my auction house consignments because I have no idea whether any of my loot is any good or not. And since the auction house operates on AD rather than coin, I have no feel for what anything's worth beyond the default suggested by the game. And looking at the auction broker's suggestions for purchases, I'm loathe to muck around with prices too much.

I was associated with an accident investigation case. A guy had a contract to recharge water-filled fire extinguishers. These were the stainless steel type, probably 5 gallons. Each tank had a Schrader valve for pressurization. The guy used a dry nitrogen cylinder equipped with a hose that had a tire chuck on the end. His method was to just bump the valve until the meter on the extinguisher registered max (probably ~200 psi). All well and good, except the tire chuck had been dropped to concrete floors probably hundreds of times. Finally, he shoved the chuck on a valve..., and it stuck. Don't know what the pressure in the nitrogen tank was, but may have been 2000 or so psi. It was *very* messy. The stainless tank blew apart like a blooming flower.

There is scarcely any argument against carbon dioxide being a greenhouse gas. It is easily demonstrable in any high school lab. The issue is how effective it is in that role in the planet's atmosphere. The alarmists believed their models showed far greater effect than has been found in real life. Their persistent "Just you wait, it's coming" moving of the goal posts would have made them universally mocked if they weren't so useful to certain types of politicians. They remind me of the Millerite cult that kept predicting the end of the world in the 19th and kept moving the date forward as each previous prediction failed.
Nobody has produced a simulation of the Earth's atmosphere that accurately predicts the climate for periods where we have detailed information about conditions and what actually resulted. Until they can accurately model the past nobody should take seriously their claims to know the future.

Mr. Moo Moo thinks we're just idiot rubes getting worked up by cheap populist appeals.
While he, the enlightened one, of course has thought deeply and pondered the issue with his big ennobled brain and come to the conclusion that if you are concerned about our elected representatives turning more and more into a ruling royalty class that is divorced from any sort of attachment to the people whom they are supposed to be serving, and that the free extra-special Royalty Parking at the airport is but a mere symptom, then you're just a hick and you should let the educated enlightened ones like Senators and Mr. Moo Moo lead us.

Yes everybody settles for the lowest bidder. Does that decision include competence sure. If I need a diesel mechanic and a fighter pilot submits a resume for a lower salary I'll still hire the mechanic but I wont overpay if I have a real budget. The problem is Govt does not have a real budget and they tend to overpay accordingly.

Actually, they're coming to find that carbon dioxide does not act the way they assumed it does so don't throw around the greenhouse gas label so blithely.
I also was mainly disagreeing with their framing the question as if the majority of scientists agreed with co2 being the most responsible compound in that list.

In fact as I recall a lot of people were surprised when Eyes Wide Shut came out. "Kubrick? I thought he was dead!" Admittedly, Stan couldn't have shocked the audience if he tried by 1998. Everything that could have been done had already been done. And of course it didn't help that Kubrick making a movie about sex and relationships seems about as good a fit as Mark Sanford doing a lecture tour on the virtues and advantages of marital fidelity. They just don't seem to go together, if you know what I mean.

And my point that I've made 10 times already but you still don't get is that the employer/employee relationship is no different for taxpayer/senator than it is for IBM/ IBM worker. Just like nobody at IBM pays for his parking costs while traveling, a senator shouldn't either.

As a long-time corporate accountant, both MMM and his detractors have a point. People with jobs that entail travel get reimbursed for their travel -- and special little snowflakes shouldn't game the system to be treated as divas. Where the rubber meets the road is the Travel Policy. The BH is flying back from NC tomorrow on Delta instead of some credible airline because of her employer's jive-assed travel policy -- where booking through the corporate website and ensuring the right kickbacks go to the right corporate travel executives is more important than saving a buck or two (in the age of Orbitz or travelocity) or being convenient. Had I my druthers, the travel policy would say, "look up the crappy thing that corporate travel advises, beat the cost, split the difference with the company."
As an example, corporate travel advises Delta one-stop from a city near you to a city near your destination for $362. You find a United flight that is closer to your home and closer to the job for $250. You book it, print both quotes to attach to your expense report, and are reimbursed $250 for your travel costs and bonused $56 for being smarter than a corporate travel coordinator.

why thank you qdpsteve. I watched that movie for about 1 hour and said enough is enough.
And, I work from home. When I need to go for an inventory count to the city where my home office is, I drive, and stay at my Dad's and don't charge the company I work for a hotel room.
I get mileage only by pointing out that no-one else wanted to go spend 8 or more hours dealing with people that couldn't count without taking off their shoes half the time.
My company gets paid pretty good bucks for my travel.
Therefore, usually we do the GoToMyPC or a web conference.
Why can't our government do the frickin Skype or something instead of we are having to pay for all this travel?

The role of CO2 in the atmosphere is being reassessed but the same lab experiment done 150 years ago will produce identical results today. The issue is complexity, not the properties of CO2 on its own.
And the question was entirely correct if you didn't let your bias enter the picture. CO2 was the only item on the list considered a greenhouse gas. This question could have appeared in a quiz long before the AGW hysteria and the answer would remain the same. The question wasn't "Which of the following is going to turn the world into an inferno and kill everything?" You read it the way you chose to read it. This sort of things screws people up on tests quite often.

I wish Kubrick had come back to California to do just one more film. A western would of course have been quite the logical choice. Everything he did from Lolita forward was shot on British or other European soundstages.
Also, I know he left Hollywood for London around 1960 when he felt jerked around by Kirk Douglas over Spartacus. But did he really still believe anyone would try the same crap on him if he returned in 1990? By then he was STANLEY KUBRICK, for goodness' sake. He could have gotten Francis Ford Coppola to be his personal assistant.

The point that Mr. Moo Moo glided over is that permanent-next-to-the-terminal private parking spaces are simply unavailable to the public (even CEO-types) at any price. If the spots were open to the public to rent (albeit for a lot of $$$$), I wouldn't be so bothered if congressmen chose to spend their own budget on these.
But the spots aren't open. It's the special privileges at a public facility that are unavailable to mere mortals that's galling.

Because they keep getting elected. As long as LIV and FSA are the biggest voting blocs little will change for the better.
In my job we avoid travel if possible. Installing software or fixing stuff from my home desktop and billing for the time is great work if you can get it. But we also do a lot of stuff that involves moving physical objects around in such a way that requires a little know-how.
My most recent contract gig paid me quite a lot of travel expenses because I knew what needed to be done and could make it happen quickly. The company paying for all of this found it far more useful to pay me me a premium to travel than to try to get someone local to follow their instructions. A factor that made my experience more valuable was that there were numerous people in an office somewhere far away waiting on me to say the machines were ready for Step X to be done remotely. Most of those people couldn't go home until the site was considered completed or at an acceptable stage until morning. So if a first timer trying to decipher their instructions as they performed the task went late, it wasn't just overtime for him, it was over time for a dozen or more people.
So my experience and likelihood to be done ahead of schedule (assuming nothing beyond my control went wrong) was worth far more than the cost of my travel. So much so that even though I was only working three or few nights a week, they would have me enter time for a full forty hours to ensure I wouldn't jump ship for the first full time gig that came along.
On the second phase of this conversion, they decided to take all of the banks they'd worked on for the first and convert them to the new parent company's system in a single night. Big mistake. Instead of drawing from the established set of technicians who knew their way around the project, they had at most one tech from the first phase at each location with several people who had no previous experience with the project and in most cases no knowledge of banking systems in general.
Even before the day came they'd revise it from overnight to over the weekend, starting at closing on Friday. My group was there Friday and Saturday, with three of us wrapping up on Sunday. And that was with me there all three days. I cannot imagine what kind of train wreck it would have been if nobody present had any prior knowledge of the project or similar projects.
Funny thing. I applied for a deployment gig that I suspect is being run by a particular company and if so I may end up being interviewed by someone who fired me from a previous deployment for not rolling out machines at the same pace as the other techs. The difference was that I was dealing with high-strung executives with tens of gigabytes of locally stored data and finicky apps with arcane installation requirements while most of the others were handling bog standard machines with users who never stored anything locally and never installed anything beyond the standard image. Oh and the tools we were made to use were crap. In many cases they duplicated stuff Microsoft gives enterprise customers for free that actually works.
So it could be an interesting interview, finding out if I'm blackballed by that company and at what level it originated.

It also helps that I was from MN before it got too crazy. That's where Mr. Schulz is from ya know. Uff da. I remember things that he had in his comic strips that looked very much like my life.

Posted by: qdpsteve at May 10, 2013 01:09 AM
All true. Mind you, I really suspect he needed someone to jerk him around a bit with "Eyes Wide Shut". I don't mind it, but it's a weak Kubrick film. Don't particularly like it, but it's got a nice dreamlike feel to it. At least someone should have told him that the story was not a good choice. But yeah, a western would have been epic, from him. "One Eyed Jacks" is still a good film and ably handled by Brando, but, jeez, what could it have been like with Kubrick at the helm. Brando was nuts for firing him. As demonstrated by the fact that Brando never attempted directing again. It was too much. Mind you Brando was pretty lazy.

I admit that reading the strip in my childhood, I wondered where in the world those neighborhoods were based on. I love my hometown of Lakewood, but we never had the kind of open space depicted in those strips. I used to wonder where that was. Northern California? Orange County?
And I hear ya re... the (cough) 'senator' who shall not be named. Wouldn't surprise me either if they found a couple shallow graves on properties he grew up at.
Always happy to meet other Peanuts fans. I'm gonna see the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa within the next few years if it kills me... and clean out that gift shop. :-)

If you didn't know and random picked, you'd expect 50/50 results, so when you get a group answering lower than 50%, that's an indication of what I'll term "active stupidity".
The nitrogen question's results were also interesting. The answers were no better than random picks (and often worse) across the board. If you're worse than a random pick, then you think you know something when in fact you don't.

When I was about seven or eight, reading the Beverly Cleary books, I was convinced she was writing about my home town, somewhere ten to fifteen years earlier. Henry Huggins went to a Glenwood Elementary, just like me! And there were a bunch of street names I recognized!
A few years later it came to my attention that there were a LOT of Glenwood Elementary schools all over the country. And a generic suburb was likely to have some of those street names if there was no dominant theme. And the street names I knew were specific to the town due to being named for locally prominent people did not appear in the books.
The author did spend most of her life in California and may even have had a passing acquaintance with long ago Thousand Oaks but it now seems likely the town where most of her characters lived existed only in the heads of her and the readers.

Alamogordo: will do re Woodstock! Too bad about the canary. Then again from what I've heard, Josef Stalin would have been shocked by the bossiness of some of those RAs.
By the way, you mentioned the Charlie Brown "theme song." If you're thinking of the piano jazz in the specials, that's by a great jazz artist named Vince Guaraldi. All of his music, both for the Peanuts specials and otherwise, is great. Here's a link to a great recent compilation of his music at Amazon, "The Ultimate Vince Guaraldi."

This level of basic ignorance seems to go hand in hand with the celebrity worship culture. I'm aghast at the idea that there is a horde of voters who would score worse than chance on that test but could talk for an hour non-stop if asked to give a biography of Kim Kardashian.
I was passing through the living room earlier and my mother had the TV tuned to some celebrity gossip show, which was asking if pregnancy has been hard on Ms. Kardashian. My mother made some remark questioning why this was worthy of air time. I had to ask her what she expected when she chose to watch a show that exists for no other reason. It was on that channel when she turned on the TV. But that was almost twenty minutes ago. Was it insufficiently insulting to basic human decency up until this moment?
I see the idiot celebrity tracking magazines in the check-out line at the supermarket but never see any being purchased. Somebody must be being them or supermarket would find something else to put there. I worry that they're stuffing my brain with useless trivia at who knows what costs. Someday I'll walk out knowing far too much about some party girl heiress and realize I cannot remember how an internal combustion engine works.

Chromatography isn't what I'm most familiar with, but when it comes to equipment like that in general, there are certain things I like to push for:
1. Make sure that you will have support and an extended warrenty, especially for getting their repair guys out. This is especially true when you don't have a technical expert who is familiar with the brand you are getting.
2. Software and programming features are all nice and dandy, but make sure that the hardware is easy to maintain and use. If you can get equipment that has manual switches/buttons/&c. instead of, or in addition to, the software, you will come out ahead once someone masters the machine. Alsp, while point and click is nice in software, if there is an option for command line input, go for that; it actually becomes easier to use once you get the hang of it and you'll be able to do more with it.
3. Make sure that they will do the instillation AND do training. Make sure for the training that it is more than just a glorified demo.

(1) Fish do grow old and die -- sometimes with stunning rapidity [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killifish ]. (2) The most common causes of fish death, however, are water quality and aggression -- if you hadn't noticed the victim being chased around, change some water. (3) One thing that people fail to realize in fish tanks is that there's always disease there, and there's never disease there.....tanks are miniature ecosystems, and only when you introduce something new (new fish, new plants, new ornaments) can "disease get into your tank". But even when potentially harmful organisms are in the tank for years, a healthy balance of helpful organisms and defenses keep them in check. It's seldom the pathogen that's the problem -- it's the balance going off-kilter.

When did you intro this fish? If it had been around for a couple of months prior to the big change.....it could have been the big change that did it in. If, on the other hand, you just introduced it within a week or so, the conditions could have been too different between its home tank and yours [and sometimes yours is "better", but it's the "different" that counts] [Altolamprologus compressiceps are famous for this -- you have to introduce the fish into your water over the course of hours and/or days or they up and croak a few days later. Of course, my experiences with that particular fish have been (1) expensive and (2) heartbreaking....mostly in the "take 3 years to grow from 3/4 inch to 1-1/2 inch then die for no apparent reason when breeding size is 2 inches" vein -- but I'm not bitter].

Could very well be. Keep a close eye on the tank and see what happens. For future reference, you generally want to space out the "major cleanings" and "intro tankmates" activities.....not because it isn't good to do cleanings or add fish, but because it is helpful to sort things out afterwards if there are issues.

Paltrow has had her moments and I'd certainly not reject her advances, should she be taken by madness and determined to throw herself at the next person she sees. But for that list it has to be the class of woman who enters a crowded room and hush breaks out because people stop in mid-sentence to take a good long look and sigh.
Far rarer is the woman who pulls that off without trying or isn't aware she can. A professional makeup artist and photographer can bring out the best features and capture them. One thing that has always annoyed me about those 'famous stars without makeup' is that there is usually more involved, like catching the person not only without any artificial enhancement but also in a moment of exertion, such as just finishing a run. If you're accustomed to only seeing them tarted up for a publicity still or on set, of course they aren't going to be as impressive in real life. But the difference is that most people will not look as good no matter how good the makeup and photographer. You have to have some strengths going in.

Now I understand the Al Gore thing with carbon.
She was the slut who wouldn't do it with him and only not with him.
It's one of those unrequited love/lust things.
That's why he kept yelling at us that carbon would kill us all, if it wasn't paid for with credits and only he could sell the credits.

One reason American Airlines gave for stopping the 'Nerd Bird' route was that many of the companies that used it the most got their own aircraft and made it an internal matter.
The increased TSA hassle and security kabuki post-9/11 likely helped in that decision.

re Miley -- I had a theory about her b4 she turned 18.......billion dollar jailbait. That was the fascination with her then; according to some reports that was the amount of money she generated for Disney (and her dad).
Maybe that's still a holdover as she now takes a stab at displacing Paris Hilton, billion dollar slut. She's gonna hafta make a sex tape to accomplish it though.
Good ole Paris has been kind of quiet in the news lately.

Miley Cyrus wouldn't be in the top 200 if I put together the list. She's not ugly. She's just not anymore attractive than many non-celebrity women that you will see in public. Several other names just in the top 10 are a joke, too. All of them are attractive, just nowhere near Top 10 attractive. For example, I really don't understand the love for Selena Gomez, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lawrence, while Mila Kunis has the body of a 15-year-old boy. I think the definition of "attractive" has changed a lot over the past 2-3 decades.

Hi CDR M,
FYI, I'm a retired bubblehead (12 years active, 18 reserve), and participated in about a half dozen exercises that included the launch of *lots* of live exercise torpedoes (was Prospective Submarine CO course 'PCO' ops). As you are probably aware, but the public is not, modern torpedoes are *very* expensive, and there is a limited inventory.
. . . and of course, exercise torpedoes cannot explode, as they do not have warheads.
>>> we bubblehead 'steely eyed killers of the deep' *LOVE* live warhead torpedo exercises/tests, which usually involve sinking a hulk to establish a new reef. These don't happen nearly as often as I would like . . . they are not even an annual event. Casual outsiders reading this are encouraged to google to confirm.
These weenies citing so many explosions are misconstruing explosions with significant acoustic events, which sometimes includes SONAR, and it appears to me that they are greatly exagerating the actual frequency of these events. In practice, your SWO bubbas generate the vast majority of those 'events' (most of which are probably not a serious problems for whales. The use of SONAR that it is known to harm whales is the high power active 'stuff,' which simply isn't used often), and the people making this complaint either don't understand, or are deliberately suggesting that *all* active SONAR
Respectfully,
PS: BTW, my time riding skimmers as a CSL safety officer really opened my eyes. I was shocked at the operational pace of the DESRON (not only juggling several balls at once, but rapidly shifting tasks/priorities) BZ.
