Nice graphic in the article assault rifles and homicide: some statistics.

All rifles (that includes the AR-15) were involved in fewer homicides in 2011 than blunt objects, fists and knives.
1.5X more homicides were committed with blunt objects.
2.2X more homicides were committed with fists.
5.2X more homicides were committed with knives.

Image h/t Michael Ramirez Best Easter Ever?

Haha. Family calls I-5 backup during police chase 'best Easter ever'. I don't know if I'd call it that but they made the best of a bad situation. Some are criticizing them but I don't have a problem with it. When I get stuck in traffic because of some dumbass, I don't think I'd be this jovial. My favorite comment from the mom as the cops were tasering the guy:

"I love that," said Dori, "'They're electrocuting him, dear.'"

Garbage Nazis

Nice puff piece on San Francisco's Trash Inspectors. I can't quite put my thumb on why California has a debt issue. It couldn't be paying people to do stuff like this can it?

We Don't Need No Stinkin' Requirements

We may as well cut to the chase and just stop having requirements for any job. City recruits minority lifeguards even if they can't swim. WTF? Won't be long for that first drowning incident and lawsuit. The city is opening itself up to some litigation. Here's the reason why they're going down this road.

There’s a good reason the city is hiring lifeguards that can’t swim. Public pools are largely used by Latino and African-American kids, but most of the lifeguards are white and this creates a huge problem. “The kids in the pool are all either Hispanic or black or whatever, and every lifeguard is white and we don’t like that,” says a Phoenix official quoted in the story. She added that “the kids don’t relate; there’s language issues.”

I'm pretty sure that if someone is drowning, they don't give a shit what race the lifeguard is. They just want the lifeguard to save their ass. I think I see now how they'll fix the coming doctor shortage.

Next job that'll drop requirements? Can you say the Marines? I'm sure considerable political pressure will be brought to bear to ensure females can pass the Officer Infantry Course.

49 "The kids in the pool are all either Hispanic or black or whatever, and every lifeguard is white and we don't like that, says a Phoenix official quoted in the story. She added that 'the kids don't relate; there's language issues.'"

Imagine for just one second that an Arizona municipality had told black applicants for a lifeguard job to take a hike, no chance of employment, because the patrons are white kids, who "don't like" blacks and "don't relate" to blacks, and that there are "language issues" with employing blacks.

Instant nuclear firestorm. Massive protests. Protests become violent riots. Obama vows immediate action. Eric Holder dispatches the U.S. Attorney for Arizona. EEOC federal lawsuits filed. The Revs. Sharpton and Jackson parachuting in.

But white applicants are expected to shrug and quietly walk away when thus discriminated against.

144 All rifles (that includes the AR-15) were involved in fewer homicides in 2011 than blunt objects, fists and knives.
1.5X more homicides were committed with blunt objects.
2.2X more homicides were committed with fists.
5.2X more homicides were committed with knives.

And if you correct for homicides done by legal owners of AR15s you need to add a lot of zeroes before the decimal.

A name like that is made for the Horde.

274 "Save up your aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles. Drive out to Frisco. Go to the best of neighborhoods and drop off the 'gold'."

Nice agitprop, but SF is the sort of place where in "the best of neighborhoods", the law can simply be ignored. Anyone who is paid up in full with the local liberal Democratic machine, and who is being hassled by minor officialdom, is going to make a phone call, and in the best spirit of discretionary prosecution, the matter will simply go away.

It's basically a coastal Chicago. With the same array of sleazy ward-heelers and weaselly fixers and bought-off hacks that infest the Windy City.

Why do you think Obama likes coming to SF so much? It's a familiar operation.

291 In fact, when SF went to the multi can system (green for compost, blue for recyclables and black for landfill) I was all for it. Here is why. I am a fiscal conservative and landfill is fucking expensive as all get out. Even having stuff trucked to Nevada is expensive. So, cut down on the need for landfill.

Now, the SF supes went a bit to far. Shortly after that program started they said that there would be inspections of cans to make sure that things were not in the wrong cans. No fines yet, but maybe later.

But here is the problem, once again, pickers. Pickers pick through the cans at night. Which is, of course, illegal, since once you put your cans out, the contents belong to the trash men.  The pickers look for anything of value, and while they look, they move stuff to other cans if you are lucky, or worse, just dump the stuff on the sidewalk.

A bunch of us had to tell the stupid supes to either get some night time enforcement of these pickers or forget about the fines. Nothing ever happened of course, the homeless pickers still pick.

Sadly though the idea of capped deductions seemed to gain a lot of speed last time round.

Which is sad really, because it'd be far better to just overhaul the entire f'ing tax system.  But as long as "war on the rich!" is a meme, we'll never see that.

What's 3Million get you now? About 90k/year in interest if you're lucky?  So you'll have to start drawing down your principle, which is a dangerous game as we live longer and longer. Or go for more aggressive investments (oh, look how that worked out.)

This kills people doing it right and (if I'm reading this right) rewards people on pensions (which will probably remain exempt.)

I calculated that I'd need $1.4 million and 0 debt to retire comfortably by meager standards (i.e. have food) and that requires either a) the existence of medicare or b) the existence of an employee retirement health plan.  And doesn't allow for any travel or the like (so I better hope my kids live in town.)

364 Oh, ok. Then I'm hereby declaring that since the States created the Federal Govt via the Constitution, the Fed Govt hereby answers to the States in all matters. Hey! I like that idea. Relax about the $3 million IRA thing. It is possible to have too much money in an IRA. In order: No. And: But that's not for the Government to decide. As others have pointed out, it's a stepping stone. Better to say, it's a trial balloon. If this doesn't gin up outrage, they'll either start targeting other people's IRAs/401(k)s, or they'll start targeting "rich people's" normal savings accounts. YBG @343- They're called "a mattress" and "a coffee can in the back yard."

Better yet; put really rank stuff in your garbage. (oozy, sticky, smelly) Don't know the regs in  SF but you can have organics on recyclables under certain conditions and not get tagged.

Pickers, as bears also, like nice big clean scores and will return to the same address once they find any. Make yours a real turnoff.

OR

You could set out can for set asides for pickers. Make it easy for them to be helpful. most don't come equipped for sorting so just set it aside. give them someplace easy to do so and they most likely will. Stress on the easy part.

OR

Stand watch a few times until they get the idea that they get trouble at your address.

First they will set the standards of what a legal retirement account's size will be. (they're just talking about it now but you can bet what they're saying is what will wind up being the rule)

they'll then take any funds over and above those legal amounts and "invest" them in the banks and deposit "assets" in those retirement accounts in the amounts allowed.

They will then have stolen most of your money and left you with worthless "assets".

If you have over 100K in any account for any reason, I'd get out. NOW.

Even less might be wiser also.

437 I see the State Media is claiming Jeremy Irons made a "bizarre" statement about gay marriage.

In an interview with the Huffington Post the 64-year-old actor, who stated that he didnÂ’t “have a strong feeling either way” on the subject, mused: “Could a father not marry his son?”  When the interviewer reminded Irons about incest laws, the actor continued: "It's not incest between men," adding: "Incest is there to protect us from inbreeding, but men don't breed".

This is perhaps the most common argument I've seen against gay marriage - that if you legalize it you can't ban polygamous or incestuous relationships either. It may be wrong...but if half or more of the population believes it...how is it bizarre?

I'm going to be disgusting here, but when I was a teenager I had holes drilled into my sinuses due to sinus infections every month because of drainage issues.  When I was an adult I had surgery for polyps because of a perpetually runny nose.  You may need to see an ENT.

483 So here's what Obama's stupid IRA tax rule would do:
It would drive investment away and not anything raise even close to the billions he thinks it will raise.  Cayman Islands must be lobbying hard for this tax rule.

But Obama knows this, and so if the rule is passed, when it's revealed in a breathless expose by the New York Times (fed to it by some Obama flunky) that the rich are dodging Obama's "IRA fairness" rule by investing overseas, he will push for more crackdowns on those deadbeat rich guys who aren't "paying their fair share".  That's the real goal, to tighten the noose tighter and tighter on the productive class until everything by 'necessity' must be run by the state.

"I'm Afraid Of My Own Chili"

♫ I'm afraid of my own chili
'cuz I put in way too much spice
I put in a ton o' chiles and two tons o' peppers
'cut I thought that it might taste nice ♫

♫ Finally I had to taste it
And now I know the reason why
I'm afraid o' my chili, it's 'cuz o' my overkilly
I'm on the toilet 'til the end of July ♫

He described it as having his sinus "roto-rootered" and I think there was a deviated septum (?) fix, but it's been awhile so I'm not positive. BBD, did you have the horseradish with food or plain? I can see where it might help clear sinuses but would never have thought of it for bronchitits.

Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at April 06, 2013 12:06 AM (GEICT) Quicker please. All the trickling shit is becoming the new norm. I want it to hit with a devestating BOOM. Posted by: RWC at April 06, 2013 12:19 AM (sqp6o) Back in March 09, high school friend on Facebook went on and on about how great Obamacare was going to be, and how proud she was of that vote. A mutual friend that she worked with at a healthcare company pointed out to her that it was a POS. Fast forward to 2010, she is on Facebook doing a "woe is me, I am going to lose my job in a few years because of Obamacare". Move to 2012, she posts all kinds of shit in support of Obama. January 2013, she posts a woe with me, I've lost my job, what will I ever do. Other friends of hers post that while it is bad for her, she should remember all those people who will now have insurance, even though more people now don't have insurance. The LIV still don't get it. The still think they will get free shit.

619 Tobacco Rd., your first question on optics is what you plan on shooting at: first, how critical is that you take the shot, ; then are they small fast things at close ranges, or larger stationary things at longer ranges; then ask yourself what the lighting conditions are going to be. The glass to hit something that can move, that you have to hit, regardless of the lighting conditions at 150yrds is very different then the glass required to take an optional shot in optimal conditions at 500 yards.

Which reminds me, I had a conversation with one of my students the other day, he is a server at a local restaurant.  He was talking about how busy business has been lately because... it's tax refund season.  So people get money back and they "feel" rich because they feel like they just got some free shit.  That's a big part of the problem right there.

Something that Republicans could do right now is propose changing the withholding rules so that the chances of getting this huge refund back goes way down.  You could frame it in terms of "stimulus" or whatever bullshit word that will buy off Dem support.  But it would go a long way towards breaking the dependence on government.

640 NK wont attack - because I want them to attack. Thats how it works. But I do like the picture of Kim looking over the battle plans and "approving". In real life the battle would be him firing off some missiles at Seoul, followed by 5 minutes of scramble time on the south, followed by 12 hours of the NK Army getting pummeled into the dirt, along with their Korean War era equipment. And thats my take.

667 I have an uncle who lives in a rural town where they charge $5/ea to dispose of old tires at the waste transfer site.

The roadsides in that town are of course littered with tires.  Every spring he drags a half dozen or so out of his pond.

Years ago (back when steel scrap prices were cheaper), Albany NY charged extra for dead appliance removal.  Naturally, all the vacant lots in the city became dead appliance graveyards.

When they reversed that policy, and cleaned up the vacant lots, they stayed free of dead appliances.

Trying to legislate human nature is always folly.

One nice thing is that Lynchburg to the east has gotten more conservative because of the growth of Liberty University. In the 30 years that I have driven by that school, it has gone from about 1500 students to 12,000+. Floyd has become the area that the Va Tech professors want to live to get back to the land.

726 569 Iron Man: I've read when you show actual Marines the R. Lee Ermey stuff in Full Metal Jacket, they respond "Damn, wish Basic had been that easy." True? (Would love to know how accurate FMJ actually was, although my hunch is that it was pretty close.) Posted by: qdpsteve at April 06, 2013 12:27 AM (7B7jB) Well, for one, we never, ever call it "basic". Second, FMJ shows snippets, not the immersion of boot camp. Take the scene at Rifle Range doing bends and thrusts while Pyle watching. Extend that scene out about 35-45 minutes and you're there. Or, an entire platoon doing bends and thrusts for 20 minutes in a 15' by 15' pull-up bar pit. Fine, there's quite a bit of stuff not there, but how much do you show? They don't show Moto Plt (2 weeks of unremitting hell), PC Plt (PT from reville til taps and plain lettuce with water for chow for three months), CC Plt, (Brig/Chrome Domes). You DID NOT even eye fuck those guys. If caught, you burnt right there on the spot. Their Drill Instructors made ours look like kindergaden teachers. To me, it gave me boot camp flashbacks. Ermey was a Drill Instructor. His portrayal is dead-on. My Drill Instructors were a bit more sadistic. Plus, there were three, most of the time.

Posted by: 98ZJUSMC Waiting for the Sun at April 05, 2013 10:40 PM (ZCj6r)

727 Addendum to the above on Boot Camp vs. FMJ. In the interests of the story itself, they show alot of talking and interaction between the 'cruits. That was verboten. You did not jaw-jack at random. You could do a bit on Commander's Time, but very limited. I know that Private Pyle was a character to tell the story, but he would have been dropped first to three day Motivation Platoon. Then, two week Moto Plt *shudder* and if he didn't snap out of it, baby blued out with a General.

Were I a "young person" today, I'd not touch an IRA with a cattle prod.  Way too much chance of it getting outright confiscated or "means tested" a few years from now.

Much better off taking what you'd otherwise put in an IRA and investing in untraceable things like proof sets and other valuable rare coins, rare stamps, rare books and  ephemera like baseball cards and comic books, etc.

There's a bunch of highly portable stuff that proven fairly price resilient over the years.

If you were mechanically inclined, investing in some high quality hand tools could prove useful.  If the SHTF, a guy who knows how to make basic furniture with hand tools when power availability is sketchy is gonna be in high demand.

739 Staples has a 3 TB USB 3.0 Seagate drive for $90 if you add a cheap $1 or more item to push you over the coupon minimum. Not bad if you have some big files to store, especially video.

I wish it were recognized by the TiVo instead of the single WD model they allow. My mother cannot make it awake through a 1 hour TV show unless she is on the treadmill. So she wants to record EVERYTHING she is at all interested in. Downloading seasons for her is useless because she cannot understand any system I've been able to use to offer her the material. A big problem is that she has a lot of trouble acquiring any concept that was new after about 1985. She sort of gets the DVR but thinks there is some kind of magical supertape inside rather than a hard drive. Putting stuff on DVD or Blu-ray for her is a waste of time because the idea of having the stuff of your choosing in a disc library is just not on her radar. She can have a complete run of a series on a set of discs next to the TV and she'll watch whatever episode comes up in syndication instead, commercials and all.

First world problems, I know. But it makes me feels bad that one of the few areas where I can try to give her something in return for her long endurance of me is just a loss.

742 Have watched a lot of vidoes going back to early Clinton years. Have seen 3 Alex Jones videos in the last couple. Funny, in not a one of them does he say "fire can't melt steel.' Or "Oh noes, it's the Jooos!" He does mention chemtrails, but then, while not knowing what's in them, I have seen "contrails" turn a totally blue sky into solid cloud cover. Contrails do not do that. He also mentions black helicopters. Funny, I've seen small formations of totally black helicopters, fly over me low enough to see they had no markings at all. With all of the lengthy "reviews" that happen around here (how many hours spent last night on Amanda Knox? Really?) you'd think you could get a decent point by point debunking of... Bohemian Grove or The Obama Deception or 911 The Road to Tyranny Maybe it can't be done. Maybe "I was wrong" can be,and is said around here about little things that don't amount to much, but not about something you've been so adamant about for so long. Or maybe, "Hey, look over there. 744 Turning a TiVo into a cheap PC would be really banging your head against the wall. Bargain basement PCs are only a little more money new than the price of a new TiVo. You can get far more suitable hardware for general PC use for free if you don't mind it being a bit old. And if horsepower were the prime concern there would be a lot more people with HTPCs and HomeRun network tuners delivering multiple channels to every machine in the house.

The real value of TiVo is that people like my mother can actually use it. If it were just me I'd have an HTPC on the main entertainment center of the house but I don't think my mother and possibly my sister would be able to deal with it. A PLEX server would help but I don't think they'd deal with the client side stuff well enough not to demand something simpler with less functionality. The available front-end apps really try but ultimately come a bit short of what is required for a dedicated device.

My sister is a dozen years older and kind of in that broadcast mindset, too. She has a TV tuner in the PC in her room and uses that instead of the massive media library on the household network. She understands about looking for stuff on the NAS boxes when your demonstrating it but a few minutes later it ceases to be part of her universe. She does at least get how to switch the input on the TV to watch her dog training DVDs while using the treadmill.

I can understand why TiVo only supports the one model of external drive. It's simply to avoid tech support costs. For much the same reason they don't try to be a do everything network client for DLNA servers. They could easily add the software support, and some of it is in there but not fully exposed, but it would mean a lot more support costs and it would hardly make sense when there are much lower cost client devices out there.

746 #741

That would be a pretty old unit. My RePlayTV from 2001 has an 80 GB drive and they offered up to 320 GB before they stopped selling new hardware entirely. RePlay was actually on the market a few month before the first TiVo model and generally had far better features than TiVo or at least opened up the features years before TiVo thought it safe to offer them. Their machines had proper network ports back when you still had to use a USB to RJ45 adapter on the TiVo and could only use it for Guide updates.

RePlay pretty much got sued out of existence by Hollywood, Inc. for being more concerned with consumer's interests than Hollywood's. TiVo now lets you do pretty much all of the same stuff. The company did a better job of sucking up to Hollywood and became their favored device to do things that were anathema when RePlay offered them.

Of course, that unit only knows about analog SD signals, so 80 GB was plenty. Nowadays, anything less than a 1 TB would be pretty limiting for a DVR recording HD output. he hardware has also changed because it no longer has the task of encoding the input as it records. The current models expect to also be the cable box and record the incoming stream directly.

747 Posted by: epobirs at April 06, 2013 06:35 AM (kcfmt) It's interesting how and people will or won't adopt new tech. I have a similar thing with music. I simply don't listen to music now that CDs are out and everything is mp3s and downloads and whatnot and its not because I don't understand the technology it's just because I hard having to make choices every 5 minutes about what I want to hear, I hate taking the time to make playlists, it's too many choices. I just want to turn on a radio or stick in a CD and be entertained for an hour without having to think about it. It might be the same with your mom and sister. They enjoy "finding" what's on, or returning to and connecting with the sand show everytime may give them a structure to their day or make them feel like a part of a community of watchers in a way that they wouldn't get from choosing to watch whatever whenever. It's probably more than just the tech aspect. Thoughts.

749 Technology is never just about the information or thing it does, ot almost always carries a whole host of social implications. That's one of the reasons why I hope they never update the blog. Just instituting one "common sense" commenting feature, like being able to reply to specific comments so you have several comment trees instead of one long real time comment scroll, IMO would singlehandedly destroy the HQ community.

Their categories are not my categories, they always play songs that I hate that I wouldn't consider to be in the genre I chose. I just want to put in a CD and have all my choices taken away for an hour. What I really should do is just spend a week making about 50 different playlists for something? One reason I didn't use digital audio players for music for a long time was that the capacity wasn't adequate for my desires. Having to choose what would be on there from the much large collection was a daunting level of decisiveness. I used the players I had almost exclusively for audio books as though tended to be one-time items. (My current player is a retired Blackberry phone with a 16 GB microSD card installed. I keep meaning to see if I can sideload some better playback software into it as the stock app of that generation is a bit stupid about file names.)

It wasn't until the capacity of a cheap player got into the tens of gigabytes that I found them useful for music, effectively creating my own radio station that can go several days without repetition.

It would have been different when I was much younger. When you're a kid you might listen to the same album several times a day when it is new to you and has great novelty. Thus the Top 40 radio format. Same with movies and books. I must have seen Jaws in the theater a half dozen times and then watched it some more when it came around in the early days of premium cable channels.

Depends what you mean. You can pay a one-time fee for lifetime (of the device) service on a TiVo. Or you can use an HTPC setup with a cable card tuner. You'd still need to subscribe to cable/satellite but the channel guide support for PC based products is generally free.

It isn't. DVD's are fine. Bluray's another gouging technology with shrinking user value with each generation. It gives you some measure of quality improvement, but, not enough to justify junking the old system. I like DVD's. They look and sound good. But, they're a step down from VHS. VHS is much easier to use and particularly to record with. DVD's are supposed to have longevity over VHS, but DVD's are now on the way out, replaced by the next ripoff. Soon, it's going to be a hassle to continue to use them. Meanwhile, I've got VHS from the early 80's that's still going strong. It's not just about super hidef, it's about friendly tech. Each gen seems to be more expensive and harder to do what you really want to with them. The collected library has a shorter operating life than the last.

Depends on what you're using for a display. And the quality of your eyeballs. It can be harder to appreciate the level of detail as we age.

On my cheap 40" TV the difference between an upscaled DVD and a Blu-ray is quite apparent to me but I know it would have been even more so twenty years ago.

774 759. Hm, the Swiss boarding school fat boy Kim whose only interest was basketball, "earning" poor grades. To think that daddy thought fat boy was more masculine than the first born. So much for Korean racial superiority, THEIR bag of bigotry. At 28-29 with no experience, a pushover for the militants pulling strings. Meanwhile, the South Koreans insist this is all hype, hyped out of proportion. Given insanity and graft from all fronts, no telling. Meanwhile, how many times will Kimmy cry wolf? UN/NATO/US got burned the last round, Truman not taking MacArthur's advice in conducting Domino War v. Korean/China Communists. All these years of US taxfunds donated to humanitarian Nork demands have in turn funded their 4th largest military in the world. The Norks aren't Qaddafi easy pickings, nor do the Norks have the gold and resources of Libya. And naturally, the Chinese are playing a very cool hand in this highest stakes poker game. They've been maneuvering as if peacemakers globally for decades while gobbling up the yet undeveloped African, Asian and South American resources, making economic treaties with the likes of Australia v. US. So some say the Korean war drums are just playing the same old cadence. It just takes one idiot to get it wrong as tensions are blown. China refuses to tell Kim "stand down"... so Bambi, who was using the Korean threat to distract public attention from God Knows What (having dropped his Syrian and Iranian war cries to focus on the Norks even as the US economy is choking to death), blinks in this game of chicken, apologizing for sounding aggressive. If that is what prevents a war, forgetaboutit. But if that is what Bambi expects will blame the onus on the "other" for war, hardly effective given his own erratic game of hopscotch.

Why would it become harder to use DVDs? Every Blu-ray player supports DVD playback. It's a requirement of the spec.

As for recording, optical discs were no harder to use than VHS. It never got a big footprint because recording to hard drive was a much better option once it became cheap. The best DVD recorders were really DVRs that would then save to an optical disc if desired. Another factor was that Hollywood figured out how big of a market there was for packaging old TV shows in DVD sets. This removed a lot of the interest in consumers doing their own recording. That plus a massive number of very inexpensive discs of content on the shelves made the work of doing one's own recording something most people didn't care to bother with.

Broadband internet is yet another factor. Nowadays, it only takes a handful of volunteers to record shows on a PC, edit out the ads, and have it up on a torrent site an hour or so later. One file soon becomes millions of copies around the globe.

Fact is, VHS sucked. Lousy resolution and clumsy controls. But it was a BIG advance in consumer options at the time. The shift to digital made a lot of other choices available and that both improved and complicated things. Such is progress.

But they're Bluray players. What's the future in replacement DVD players? I don't know. But, just by the way the retail market is going with stocking DVD's, I can see DVD players being the next VCR's.  Maybe it'll be golden for the next decade, but, I'm sceptical. DVD recording is not the same as VHS. Bang in the tape, hit record, pause, record, finish, done. Broadband, downloads, torrent... still complicated and not the same as hard copy push and play etc. VHS might be lousy, but it's still a great system that's easy to use. For all it's vaunted quality, digital sucks. They'll take me analog from my cold dead hands. Digital was invented by satan and is responsible for the preversions of today.

777 770 epobirs Another factor was that Hollywood figured out how big of a market there was for packaging old TV shows in DVD sets. This removed a lot of the interest in consumers doing their own recording. I have boxes and boxes of VHS tapes that I never watch anymore. Once I discovered DVDs, I never looked back. To take one example: A couple years ago I bought the complete 28-disc Twilight Zone set. I got it on sale for about $85, and it was worth every penny. Just imagine how much time and effort I would have spent recording all of those episodes on tape. Not only that, but the discs are transfers from the original B&W film, so they're literally HD. The end result is vastly superior than anything I could have cobbled together myself.

You're missing the point. Every Blu-ray player IS a DVD player. The difference between the cheapest DVD decks and the cheapest Blu-ray decks is around $20, which makes it pointless for the DVD decks to continue to be made much longer. The Blu-ray decks can be treated as DVD decks and a Blu-ray never inserted. The issue you need to concern yourself with is the disappearance of optical drives entirely. Personally, this worries me as much as finding a phonograph, which is to say not at all. I have better ways to record and transport content these days.

And actually, recording to DVD on the decks that were in stores a few years ago was pretty much exactly like using a VHS player. It was very intentionally designed that way by those copanies who thought it the best way to sell it. You could simply tune a channel and press record. You could use VCR+ codes. And many DVD recorders had full EPG displays for the easiest recording use. The products didn't fail for lack of ease of use. Consumers had simply moved on or became grumpy old people who couldn't deal with change.

Digital is a huge improvement. Once I have an item recorded, I have a file I'm free to manipulate in all sorts of ways. This applies to home movies as well. Back when my sister recorded dog shows to VHS-C tapes, just getting the content into a form that could be edited was a big pain in the ass. I don't miss it at all. Now she does it on a camera that saves 1080p to SD cards and speaks USB. And that camera sells for half of what the old analog unit it replaced cost when new. (Adjusting for inflation, the digicam really only costs about a quarter of what the old VHS-C unit did.)

Instead of cubic yards of tapes the discs and hard drives store vastly greater volumes of higher quality images in a fraction of the space. If I want to play a movie I don't go searching for a tape. It's all on the network and just a few presses on the remote away.

I spent plenty of money and time on VHS decades ago. Because that was all we had. I value the memories of a bygone tech but I no sentimental attachment.
