I so want to go to this. Bad. Calling All Patriots: Million Vet March On The Memorials. Heck, wherever there is a barricade up in this country should have a protest. Every. Single. One.
Hey, if you're expecting a refund from the IRS, don't expect it until the President gets what he wants. The IRS is only collecting money and will not send out any refunds. That's why it is always better to owe the government than wait for a refund.
How about a little Saturday doom? The shutdown is a sideshow. Debt is the threat.
Yet, entertaining as all this political drama may seem, the theater itself is indeed burning. For the fiscal position of the federal government is in fact much worse today than is commonly realized. As anyone can see who reads the most recent long-term budget outlook—published last month by the Congressional Budget Office, and almost entirely ignored by the media—the question is not if the United States will default but when and on which of its rapidly spiraling liabilities.
Yeah. We're screwed. Classroom Weapons
Student who had fishing knives in his tackle box locked in his car charged with a felony. Hell, there are many classroom items that can be made into weapons. Let's ban thumbtacks, hand spray sanitizer, rubber bands and paperclips. Heck, you can even make a bow and arrow with a rubber band and paperclip. Just add a super sharp pencil, dip it alcohol and light it on fire.
Lens Flare
J.J. Abrams admits he went a little bonkers on using lens flares. Hopefully he's over it by the time he starts shooting the next Star Wars movie.
Oh, and this trailer for Stalingrad kicks some ass.
Cheerleading
I can't believe there were no keg stands.
Shutdown Drinking Game
Not too shabby of a start for a shutdown drinking game but I'm sure you morons can come up with some better drinking rules. The link is annoying as it lists it one at a time on the page. Here's their complete list.
1. Any time a children's book is referenced, take a drink. Make that two for Dr. Seuss and three for Harry Potter or Narnia.
2. Any time the Affordable Care Act is called "Obamacare," the last person to yell, "the Affordable Care Act!" has to drink.
3. One drink for each news media outlet with an overly dramatic countdown clock displayed.
4. The first person to stand up when a lawmaker says "the American people want..." may choose another person to take a shot.
5. Any time a representative reads a Tweet on the floor, everyone must start drinking. Do not stop until they do.
6. If the Founding Fathers are mentioned, everyone must name one. The last person to do so must drink.
7. Any time another country's universal healthcare system is referenced, everyone must yell a toast in that country's language and drink.
8. Any time a government official says something about "common sense," take a drink.
Paging Eric Holder
Hey, I thought this stuff was racist? Will Eric Holder sue Obamacare for requiring photo IDs?
Shooter Shenanigans
Sometimes I miss doing this job. Then I remember the haze, gray and underway part.
Cat Science
Hmmmm. Cats possibly key to successful human HIV vaccine.

Heh. The delay is all on the deckedge controller. Once you touch the deck with your hand, the deckedge controller does his quick checklist and then hits the fire button. Some are quick, some are slow.

You know, that woman is much calmer than I would be if a big cat was taste-testing my shoulder. I wonder how much Valium they had to give her to agree to cuddle up next to a wild animal. 'Cause I'd certainly need oh, at least 4 or 5 of 'em.
I was given Valium for a cath procedure a few years back. If the doctor had come in the room and said, "Ms. V. I think we'll have to cut off all your limbs now," I would have smiled and said "Whatever, doc!"

Nuremberg Defense "just following orders" etc, at a much lesser degree than the original but still doomed to horrible failure. Shutting people out of their homes? Keeping WW2 vets from seeing their memorial, on open ground? My response to these kinds of discussions is along the line of: So you want us to treat adults like children who need to be taken care of? or So you don't believe in personal responsibility? Posted by: nerdygirl at October 05, 2013 10:40 PM (zMKqp)
When I have said that to white liberals, their response is "Well, a lot of people CAN'T take care of themselves and we have to help them." If you follow it up by saying, "Who, exactly are you talking about?" They'll usually say, "Oh, uneducated people, people with no job skills." Anything to avoid saying, "Poor black people in the inner cities."
And if you follow up that response with, "why are they uneducated, exactly?" they'll say, "Because we don't spend enough money on education!"
It's maddening.

A 5th columnist posting behind a Caci (a govt security contractor in Alexandria) gateway was posting comments suggesting people smear shit on barricades and disable police/ranger cars by cutting valve stems off.
It was either a govt sanctioned op looking to encourage felony behavior, or a loner O-bot who happened to be a Caci employee just being "spontaneously helpful".
I lean (hard) towards the later explanation as I don't think a govt organized 5th column operation would be stupid enough to come in so blatantly that I could track the source of the comments and finger a govt security contractor within like 30 seconds. Something organized would be using anon proxies in Croatia, Liberia and such.

Funny...but when my grandparents were young adults in the 30s, they had no better than a 5th grade education and at one time, had 10 cents between them. They worked HARD and eventually started their own business. By the time they passed away in their 90s, they still had about half a million $ in the bank and traveled the world. They were responsible. They were hard working. And they lived the American Dream of being self sufficient and able to live life very comfortably.
And all with very little education and starting out with very, very little.

And yes, Belikin beer is quite tasty, on those 120-degree-heat-index days after a strenuous day of snorkeling and otherwise doing nothing at all constructive or productive.
The rum isn't bad either.

Down at the National Sea Shore, I arrived after dark, but intend to do some scouting tomorrow. I saw one lighted roadside sign saying ' We are all serfs now'. Ought to be interesting to see how they shut down 50 miles of sea shore. In theory, the beach in front of this house is 'closed'. More tomorrow.

Nah, it's a light lager -- like most tropical beers...for an interesting reason. Deal is -- ales like to be fermented at, essentially, room temperature....and lagers like to ferment cool (like in the 50 degree ballpark) -- and neither one of them perform well over about 85 degrees. In tropical climes, then, beer production had to wait until the advent of refrigeration. Since production of either was going to need refrigeration, why not produce something that could be refreshing when people had been in the heat, rather than complex and flavorful? So pretty much every tropical beer is a "lawnmower lager".

The bearer of an American passport should promise the exact same. It should be a matter of national honour, or honor as you'd spell it, that the citizen should go unmolested by criminals when he walks abroad.

435 Niedermeyer's Dead Horse - The Pisgah Inn is just up the road from me (Usually, I'm at Hatteras tonight). There are normally *NO* park personnel involved in any way. The blockading of the Inn is *costing* taxpayers, not saving a dime.
------------------------
Hammer I have been following the Pisgah Inn Story, and if I was the owner/concessioner I would lawyer-up in a big way. I've stayed there many times and know those folks a bit- totally unbelievable story for them at the height of the season. (what about their civil rights? Where is the DoJ?)
I also immediately thought about the outer banks when all of this escalated- how could you close it, or even restrict travel? I'm looking forward to your 1st hand info there.
I've been in Nags head and more recently Ockracoke after a Freakin hurricane, and all was pretty normal, I'll be shocked if the feds can do more than halt lighthouse tours.
Keep us posted, it will likely get more and more interesting.

It was entirely new territory then and he was simultaneously a technician and a guinea pig.

The white Karmann Ghia cabriolet is a 67-69, since its missing the rear side reflectors then its narrowed to a 67-68. While the yellow cabriolet is a 70-71, though taking a stab at the shade of yellow its probably a 71.

I did see public parking on the map very close to the bar, and that looked good if it actually exists. When I remodeled my kitchen in 2004, I custom-made my cooktop backsplash out of stainless. So, I find a place that has stainless for sale and go down and say 'I need a plate X" by Y"', and they go, "how thick?" So I hold my fingers apart and say, "about that thick."
So on the wall, sitting on the granite counter, behind my cooktop, I've got this honkin' plate of stainless that could stop an anti-tank round. I could use it to bridge over holes in the roadway. It is one serious chunk of metal. A bit of overkill, in the same way that 12" of prestressed concrete is overkill for a stepping-stone....but it looks nice.

I've been talking to Gushka about a few things and that came up.
AFAIK, bannings and hashes attach to IP addresses, which depend on the router you're connected to. If you're traveling, you typically use the router for the hotel you're staying in and its IP address -- and if there has ever been a moonbat irritating the Horde from that address, you could find yourself banned. It's nothing against you personally, it's the Holiday Inn Express in Hoboken, NJ, where catpiss once stayed.

Ok everyone's gone but I read all the comments so what the hay:
1) The Big Red One is my favorite war movie, followed by Castle Keep, possibly ...
2) Purp's Jag mobility device wouldn't work with a Fiat 124, because there wouldn't be any good metal left to weld the jackstands too ...
3) For those that wonder why the Feds own so much of the West, we must remember the history of Manifest Destiny - at one point they owned it all after taking it from whomever, and parceled it out to railroads, homesteaders, reservations, and the states (school sections). Vast amounts of the land out here isn't good for small holding farms, and mining claims are rather tiny, so when the homesteading stopped, huge swaths that were left passed to the Forest Service, if it had trees, or the BLM, if it didn't. National Parks are an American Legacy (somewhat progressive I must say, due to Teddy Roosevelt), and I am greatly saddened that our jewels are being used as props, but prezzy wants to punish his enemies. I find it shocking that peoples homes can be "closed" - there must be some legal recourse, or, it really is all over for us ...
Tomorrow, I go for a hike in RMNP ...

Hancock described the situation as similar to what happens when hackers conduct a distributed denial of service, or DDOS, attack on a website: they get large numbers of computers to simultaneously request information from the server that runs a website, overwhelming it and causing it to crash or otherwise stumble. "The site basically DDOS'd itself," he said.
