Overnight Open Thread (6-11-2013)
— Maetenloch

[This is a repeat from a couple of years ago but a moronette reminded me of it last night and I thought it'd be worth revisiting. Sadly enough sewage has gone under the bridge since then to make it less of the parlor game it was.]

The Game: Who Goes Nazi?

The Anchoress had a recent post based on a Harper's piece from August of 1941, written by Dorothy Thompson, "Who Goes Nazi?" It's a parlor game where you look at the people around you and decide who would join the Nazis in a crunch. Of course when Thompson wrote this, it wasn't merely a game - she had seen it played out several times in real life. And in today's version it doesn't have to be actual Nazis - it could be any ideological cause that's willing to use violence to gain power.

539w.jpg
It is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of one's acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi. By now, I think I know. I have gone through the experience many times-in Germany, in Austria, and in France. I have come to know the types: the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself has created, the certain-to-be fellow-travelers. And I also know those who never, under any conceivable circumstances, would become Nazis.

And then she begins to go person by person at an imaginary cocktail party and analyze whether they'd go Nazi or not and why:

The gentleman standing beside the fireplace with an almost untouched glass of whiskey beside him on the mantelpiece is Mr. A, a descendant of one of the great American families. There has never been an American Blue Book without several persons of his surname in it. He is poor and earns his living as an editor. He has had a classical education, has a sound and cultivated taste in literature, painting, and music; has not a touch of snobbery in him; is full of humor, courtesy, and wit. He was a lieutenant in the World War, is a Republican in politics, but voted twice for Roosevelt, last time for Willkie. He is modest, not particularly brilliant, a staunch friend, and a man who greatly enjoys the company of pretty and witty women. His wife, whom he adored, is dead, and he will never remarry.

He has never attracted any attention because of outstanding bravery. But I will put my hand in the fire that nothing on earth could ever make him a Nazi. He would greatly dislike fighting them, but they could never convert him.. Why not?

Beside him stands Mr. B, a man of his own class, graduate of the same preparatory school and university, rich, a sportsman, owner of a famous racing stable, vice-president of a bank, married to a well-known society belle. He is a good fellow and extremely popular. But if America were going Nazi he would certainly join up, and early. Why?. Why the one and not the other?
It's a long but worthwhile article and just more proof that the people's basic nature hasn't really changed much at all over time. Read til the end to find out her conclusions on the type of person who would and wouldn't go Nazi.
nazigame3456.JPG

If I were to play the game today, I'd be willing to wager that a good many of the current political class in Washington would go Nazi (some actively and some passively) and sadly that includes some GOP-types. And no doubt Spencer Ackerman and many on Journolist would jump on the bandwagon - although based on some the emails it seems they're not even waiting for actual Nazis to show up before they start bashing in skulls, rhetorically speaking of course.

I would also be willing to bet that anyone with real religious faith would have a much easier time ignoring the siren call of the Nazi cause.

Snowden and Suspicious Timelines

How disillusioned could he have become in a week?

That means that if you count backwards, he had to have started work for Booz no earlier than February 20 and probably significantly later. So, if he was already speaking to Greenwald in February, does this mean he took the Booz job with the purpose of gaining access to the documents and leaking them?

And if I were 29, making $200,000 and living in Hawaii with a stripper pole-dancing girlfriend, well you can pretty much stop right there because there wouldn't be a second act to the screenplay.

The Obama Administration Goes For The Record

We're gonna need a bigger boat of independent counsels.

That's five independent prosecutors and investigations of this Administration that the most corrupt President in American history is dodging, and we haven't included yet the various gun-walking plots including Fast and Furious (there were as many as ten), and the Benghazi cover-up, which brings us to a total of seven independent prosecutors that should be appointed to reveal the criminality and corruption of this Administration.

The Tabooing of Guns Part XI: Student Suspended For Talking About Guns

A 5-year-old girl chats up classmates while waiting for the bus after school. The topic: Playing with a Hello Kitty "bubble gun" that, with the flick of a finger, blows bubbles everywhere.
"I'll shoot you, you shoot me, and we'll all play together," the kindergartner says.
The next day, that remark - which was made innocently, according to the lawyer for the girl's family, who related the story - landed the young central Pennsylvanian child in the principal's office.
Soon after, she was sent home after being issued a 10-day suspension for a "terroristic threat," as indicated on the suspension form signed by Mount Carmel Area Elementary School Principal Susan Nestico.

Meanwhile a school is sponsoring toy gun buybacks:

"If we want older kids to not think guns are cool, we need to start early." But wait, there's more: After the kids surrender their toy guns, they'll be fingerprinted and photographed. This is what happens when your schools are controlled by fanatical cultists.

Cosplay, Gender Theory, and Nerds Oh My!

Well when you dress up in a 'sexy jewel tone tunic' at a science fiction convention to get attention, don't be too surprised if you get more nerd attention (and from the wrong nerds) than you care for. This is what lawyers refer to as a 'foreseeable risk'.

"Honey, your skirt is a little short."

To be fair, it was a little short. It was short intentionally. I was dressed in a science officer costume from Star Trek: The Original Series. Not the sleek little work-appropriate but still sexy jewel tone tunics from the new movie, but the flared, strangely-constructed, unapologetically teal and chartreuse polyester cheerleader dresses that fit perfectly with the (now) retrofuturistic vibe of the original show. It's a screen accurate dress. And by "screen accurate" I mean "short". And at the beginning of the day, I just assumed the lady who commented was pointing out that I needed to tug down the dress a bit. That was the first comment. After the next 30 or so, I had had enough.

I was at Balticon, a great science fiction convention that leans more to the literary side than the ones that are normally in my wheelhouse.

...The people attending, on the other hand, were Not Comfortable With The Way I Chose to Present. I felt like they really, really wanted me to go back to my room and change into a long, historically accurate, shapeless Medieval dress. Or jeans and a geek t-shirt. Either would be acceptable: not too aggressively feminine, but not dressed nicely enough to make them nervous they were being invaded by mundanes. . . .

'If They Can't Fuck, They Can't Fight'

More and more American military personnel are wondering why all the fun things in life are, especially for them, illegal, immoral, or fattening? Since the 1990s politicians have been determined to impose virtuous and politically correct habits on all the troops. First it was a ban on sex with foreigners and each other (women are now 15 percent of military personnel). Then diets were scrutinized to keep everyone lean, mean, and unhappy. Smoking was increasingly discouraged (or made illegal in most places on bases). Now there's a crackdown on alcohol and most forms of flirting (which can be rather more blunt in the military).

As the number of rules has increased the tolerance for any violations has shrunk. The military is losing a lot more people for what was once normal behavior.

Anatomy of a Logo

The Star Wars logo has become iconic since it first appeared and this is story of how it came to be.

"I'd been reading a book the night before the meeting with George Lucas," she says, "a book about German type design and the historical origins of some of the popular typefaces used today-how they developed into what we see and use in the present." After Lucas described the kind of visual element he was seeking, "I returned to the office and used what I reckoned to be the most 'fascist' typeface I could think of: Helvetica Black."

Inspired by the typeface, Rice developed a hand-drawn logo that translated well to the poster campaign, and ultimately to the movie itself. "I did have the screen in mind when I drew the logo originally," explains Rice, who "stacked and squared" the words to better fit the brochure cover. It was an aesthetic choice that has lasted nearly three decades.

My money's on "yes". In the chunk of interview I've seen, he talked about how he wanted to leak something in 2008, but hung on hoping Obama could turn things around.

I doubt that PRISM was what he wanted to leak in 2008. I got the impression that he didn't have anything specific in mind, but had decided to look for something to leak.

I'm betting on the "wanted to play the Internation Man of Mystery" option.

If the conversation I overheard at lunch today is any indicator, the company grade officers aren't pleased.  Three guys, I'm guessing in the Career Course (they were all Captains), lamenting that the country is looking at an invasion of privacy/Big Brother and the Army was getting sexual harassment training on damn near a monthly basis.  One then related that from his time as a Congressional page that one Chucky Schumer was notorious for sexual harassment and had a female Chief of Staff at the time (he described her as "smoking hot") with whom he was having an affair; evidently this was common knowledge amongst the Senate staffers.

80 The military is losing a lot more people for what was once normal behavior. And little by little, the military will be converted into enforcers of politically correct thought and behavior. Both within the military and in the civilian population. With each passing minute, it is becoming less and less likely that the military will be on our side if the SHTF.

84 Revvy, from an anime perspective with cross over to the Sci-fi/Fantasy cons.  The flame wars between the cosplayers versus the ones merely playing dress up can be nuclear.  Then there are the never ending flame war forums on ugly cosplay, either they screwed up the costume or because of their body type they should not dress as a Sailor Senshi.  Even in the SCA community being caught with a costume that has wrong era bits to it, oh my.

Hayek in "Road to Serfdom" addresses the question of those to whom the Nazis appealed:

There is a great deal of truth in the often heard statement that Fascism and National Socialism are a sort of middle-class socialism-only that in Italy and Germany the supporters of these new movements were economically hardly a middle class any longer. It was to a large extent a revolt of a new under-privileged class against the labour aristocracy which the industrial labour movement had created. There can be little doubt that no single economic factor has contributed more to help these movements than the envy of the unsuccessful professional man, the university trained engineer or lawyer, and of the "white collared proletariat" in general, of the engine driver or compositor and other members of the strongest trade unions whose income was many times theirs.

In short, replace "white collared proletariat" with "credentialed proletariat" and "trade union" with "public sector union" and we have ... Occupy Wall Street.

I've seen this sort of cruelty in the 60s up close and personal behind the Iron Curtain.  Behavior deemed unacceptable then and there was going to church.  Children were ridiculed in class and the parents disciplined and excluded from government jobs which pretty much was all jobs.

And irony of all ironies, students in Eastern Europe now have greater religious freedom then students in South Carolina or Texas.

I suspect that the solution the Dems are leading up to will involve giving EO reps in the military vastly increased powers, as well as removing their appointment from a command decision to one made in Washington, D.C.  Viola, instant commissars.

The military has always been a place for those who are not quite a good fit for polite society.  It's a culture that values and encourages aggressiveness, risk taking, and confidence.  You can't simple instill that into young soldiers and then expect them to turn it off at a moments notice.  At least, not without breeding a generation of sociopaths.

If you are trying to start a big business or be a Steve Jobs type of guy, do you have a chance? In today's America? Do you even bother?

Posted by: chemjeff at June 11, 2013 10:34 PM (9GG/0) I don't know of any way to move a character to another server (earlier posts on their forum say it's not possible), but they have announced that at some point they are going to "merge" the servers so everyone will be on one server. I know you can "friend" a user across servers if you have their username but you can't team up or join a guild together. It's not widely discussed but you can create a new account under a different e-mail address and create two more new characters if you want to, i.e. to have another one on Dragon. Are you enjoying the game?

254 The good thing about denominational conventions for is that if you're required to go, aside from voting on "The amendment to the amendment" which gets to be a bore and a pain, there is usually some great worship and Christian music and if it's a convention you do yearly you get to see your friends that you don't see any other time of the year.

You have to be careful to buy the "natural" syrups though because all the others have nutra sweet to make them sweet enough. We pretty much have stopped using it for soda making and now just use it to make fresh seltzer water, which I like a lot. I do have a friend who uses hers all the time for making cola though and has saved a bucket of money doing it that way.

I have been lurking, reading and commenting on this blog since 2008 and I have found you good people to be (seriously) some of the smartest people I've had the pleasure of knowing at least in the abstract of living in my computer. My issue seems to be simply that why in the fuck are some of you so friggin' captivated by either Japanese anime or some worthless fucked up repeatedly ad-nauseum superhero movie/latest bullshit Star Wars crap? You folks are so smart, yet it seems like you are living in this fantasy bubble regarding these pathetically stupid sequels, prequels, and other worthless bullshit that Hollywood spits out just to make a fucking buck. Gabe this morning brags about the new Superman movie and I'm like how many fucking times do you have to want to see a pathetically stupid iteration of some fucked up Marvel or DC comic that has been done over and fucking over. Some might say "you just don't get it" and to that I say you're right I can't understand the naked stupidity it takes to continue to support the same superhero shit over and over. And don't get me started on the stupid fucking Star Wars shit. I am 49 years old and never thought that Star Wars was anything more than some stupid pre-adolescent shit, and yet here we are arguing the merits of whether some Rastafarian character has a place in the dumbest science fiction franchise of all time. I guess maybe I'm dead inside, but sometimes folks have to learn to let their youth go.

356 Well Samuel Adams we could I guess argue why Salvador Dali had that melting watch in that painting.  But broadcast and still media are the currency of today in transmitting information and ideas.  So we get very involved in the merits and message of what is shoveled out by the metric ton.

To play dress up and cosplay, only thing besides fan-fiction, that lets one even pretend for a few hours you are in a favourite place or time.  As opposed to that recent BBC series where a modern young lady ends up in Jane Austen's time I guess.

But like anything else it can be easy to get lost in that world.  To transform oneself into what one likes.  Which could be funny if we are talking Goku but disturbing and dangerous if its the main character from Monster.

About who goes Nazi: in the '80's I had a friend in DC who ended up playing a big part in shifting my political views to the right. He had worked for a GOP representative. He introduced me to the works of PJ O'Rourke and to National Review. He defended Reagan when I (dumb lib that I was then) derided Reagan. He got me thinking.

About 15 years ago, he moved to LA and got a job in Hollywood. The last time I talked to him, it's like he had his brain removed. He actually took time off to work on Obama's campaign in '08. He's "rethought" his position on abortion - those babies are fetuses after all! We have completely switched places politically.

I've thought about it. He was someone who was always proud of being in what he thought was the intellectual forefront of things (i.e. the conventional wisdom). In the '80's the winds were blowing rightward, so he was a right-winger then. When he moved out to California and found being a Republican in Hollywood was as uncool as you can get, he moved to the left. He was a good friend once, but he's someone I now know would turn Nazi, if Nazism became cool. There's no moral center there.

The Anchoress said something interesting about that mindset not long ago. She spoke about how the overwhelming desire of many people nowadays is not to be right, or kind, or moral, but to be hip.

I have the cherished one or two I hold onto, of course (Cowboy Bebop), but by and large the genre is just gaudy dreck that's only fun if you're mocking it in a self-aware fashion. Are there some decent series I don't know about?

438 Truthfully Yoshi not much in the current crop is attracting me.  Only thing currently being broadcast that I want is Space Battleship Yamato 2199.  And that is really not new.

I find too much of the current crop to be pointless, weird, or just plain disturbing.  When they are not combining the three.  And all the shows centering around high school, love triangles, and such are not holding my attention; they run together.  Two cases in point - Ultimate Girls and Upotte!.

I would love to see more Natsume's Book of Friends or Wagaya no Oinari-sama.  But that does not look likely.

The Left can't comprehend totalitarianism.   Many of them excuse socialist/communist  regimes.    But they   look at the Nazi Party as completely different from communists.  The Nazi  Party  was a group of socialists too.  Sure  they hated communism.  But it was like two super models that hate each other.

The Left  compares   conservatives to Nazis because:  1.  They suck. 2.  Hitler outlawed unions.  3.  They outlawed caberets  and  controlled  behavior.   Stupid reasons   really.  I'd hand them   a  copy of Hayek, but he's so  far above their heads  it wouldn't be worth it.

532 I think the whole thing about "going Nazi" (or Commie, which the original author didn't take into account) is whether you have an authoritarian streak or not. A lot of people would like to be a Nazi if they could be the Fuhrer, but there's a huge difference between being the Fuhrer and being a rank-and-file Nazi. There's only room for one Fuhrer at a time. "I think young D over there is the only born Nazi in the room. Young D is the spoiled only son of a doting mother. He has never been crossed in his life. He spends his time at the game of seeing what he can get away with. He is constantly arrested for speeding and his mother pays the fines. He has been ruthless toward two wives and his mother pays the alimony. His life is spent in sensation-seeking and theatricality. He is utterly inconsiderate of everybody. He is very good-looking, in a vacuous, cavalier way, and inordinately vain. He would certainly fancy himself in a uniform that gave him a chance to swagger and lord it over others." As I see it, Mr. D has an anti-authoritarian streak that would make him ill-suited as a Nazi. I don't see this type of person willingly wearing someone else's uniform.

Let's see - spoiled only son (although I don't think mom was exactly doting), never been crossed in his life, plays the game of seeing what he can get away with, inconsiderate, theatrical, good-looking in a vacuous way and vain.

562 @irongrampa, Because anyone who is emotionally invested in a worldview will be stressed by the possibility that it might be challenged, or even (gasp!) wrong. So they are pushed by their own emotions into looking for alternative explanations. Note that this is not a left-right thing, it's a people thing. Another people thing, and one that gets a lot of us into trouble, is the capacity to hold multiple conflicting worldviews, all of which can be emotionally defended at once. This is the source of political pretzel logic, and it is also why eighty percent of political dialogue consists of people talking right past one another. IMHO, the best defense is in becoming emotionally invested in two ideas: 1) the world truly does make coherent sense, when viewed from the right perspective, and 2) knowing what is really going on (as opposed to, say, "being right") is the best way to get ahead in life. The entire postmodernist relativistic cant is designed to avoid the pain of having to resolve internally conflicting worldviews. That is what makes it so seductive, and also what makes it so profoundly destructive. Hi, ONT!

The Left can't comprehend totalitarianism.

On the contrary, it's exactly what they crave.

"Totalitarianism" today has a bad connotation. Originally (with Mussolini, its progenitor), it did not. It meant that the state would take of you from "cradle to grave" (the origin of that phrase).

If you ask any leftist if the state should look after you from "cradle to grave," he'll probably answer with an emphatic "yes."

The problem, of course, as pointed out by Hayek, is that such uniformity of social purpose can only be achieved through brutal coercion.

there is also this --  POWs get treated with respect and essentially warehoused until the war is over, when they are released without concern.  Conversely, traitors get hung.

Does that make sense to you?

579 Ayn Rand--specifically Atlas Shrugged--made me for once reflect on my political leaning. When Obama was elected,I was rereading it after a long hiatus. It scares me, the parallels between the admin and the book. Nearly verbatim. It has strengthened my determination to halt the sickening slide into chaos. In whatever small way I can to stop this, I will do. Won't be easy, and likely I won't live to see victory, but the effort isn't ever going to cease. Posted by: irongrampa at June 12, 2013 12:01 AM The last time I re-read Atlas Shrugged was the Spring of '09. I still view it as a cautionary tale. The current administration views it as a "how-to" manual. The parallels are frightening.

"I do not admire but appreciate the way they embraced being evil, "

I don't think most Nazis got up and said "I'm going to be really evil today." Like the Commies, they were convinced they were doing good - they told themselves the Jews were sinister and subhuman and had to be done away with. They thought a Europe living under a 1000 Year Reich was a good thing.

Don't get the idea that Commies did great evil for what they believed were high ideals and the Nazis didn't. Nazi ideals were twisted - but they were ideals. I think very few people (besides serial killers) actually see themselves as evil. It's the fact that people can be so unaware of themselves that they can do really crappy things and perceive them as good that makes us such a terrifying species. People without a strong moral core can talk themselves into almost anything.

Like the Commies, they were convinced they were doing good - they told themselves the Jews were sinister and subhuman and had to be done away with.

The driver was that they hated the Communists, with whom the Nazis had fought running street battles for years, and the Jews were strongly identified with the Communists.

It's a chicken or egg thing. Did Hitler/the Nazis hate the Jews because of their strong connection with Communism, or did they hate Communism because of its strong connection with Jews?

I don't know. My guess is that they hated both, and the strong connection between them simplified things for them, but that's just a guess.

"Cultural Amnesia" is a great book. I saw Clive James on TV around the time it came out and, although he had doubts about the Iraq War, he expressed a love for America that I don't think is common in "social democrat" circles. I remember in the book he generally praised Thatcher and admitted he had been unfair to her in the '80's.

I think he's slowly moving to the right. He values Western Civilization and freedom too much to remain on the left. (The best part of the book was he rippped Satre a new one.) He's honest and unafraid to criticize the icons on the left. Those traits will automatically disqualify you from the left these days.

Jay: No, I think the driver for Nazis was their bogus race theories, based on 19th century pseudo-science. One thing that strikes me, reading 19th century authors, is they really thought the different European nationalities were separate races. Plenty of people referred to "the German race," "the French race" and so on. Disraeli, born a Jew, said "Race is all." The Nazis agreed with him on that score. The difference was Disraeli thought the Jews were a superior race. The Nazis produced a lot of dumb "science" showing Jews were inferior.

One reason Communism attracted so many Jews is because, with all the BS race theory going around, they fell hard for "the brotherhood of man" bullshit preached by the Commies.

Sony used to sell a device called a "network Walkman". Looks kind of like a pocket watch, holds about 9 hours of music. I bought one. OK, but not great. There's a cheap-ass electronics brand called Coby that also has some mini-mp3 players quite cheap. And basically, you can just plug them into a USB port on your computer, and load them with mp3's like they were a flash drive.

One reason Communism attracted so many Jews is because, with all the BS race theory going around, they fell hard for "the brotherhood of man" bullshit preached by the Commies.

So you're shaking out on the "Nazis hated Communism because they hated Jews" side? Where does Marx figure into all this? He was a Jew - by birth - yet despised Jews for their role in capitalism ("stock jobbing"), very much the same as Hitler did (one of Hitler's rants in Mein Kampf goes off on the Jews as the agents of "international capitalism" and "stock jobbing," in words almost indistinguishable from those of Marx).

And as for the "brotherhood of man," many Jews secretly or sometimes frankly (as you point out for Disraeli), make clear that they consider themselves a superior race. Is that a BS race theory too?

672 I took an water cooler poll in my office today asking what people thought of the the "NSA thing". I was amazed at the number of people who had pretty much no clue whatsoever what I was asking about. On guy who last week was all delighted "that fascist" Michele Bachmann was retiring looked me in the eye and said he was fine with the Government looking at all his emails and listening to phone calls because he has nothing to hide and it makes us safer. Granted this is the most stupid response I got and he first said he hasn't been following it but...WTF? The other common thread is that almost everyone blamed Bush and the Patriot act as if it hadn't been reauthorized in 2011. In their minds Obama is powerless to change government and is therefore still a great President. I swear, I can't understand how some peoples minds work...or don't. What I took away from this admittedly tiny sample is that we shouldn't overestimate the effect of this corruption on the LIV or the left side of the spectrum. They are remaining willfully cocooned and ignorant and we are truly screwed as a Nation.

Someone over at PJmedia (I'm too lazy to find it) had a piece about "hacking the system" -- where (on computers) you find persnickety little weaknesses like memory allocation and use them to go around much more central chunks of functionality such as privileged execution, like (in politics) using the "budget reconciliation" process to pass Obamacare....whilst not passing a budget for five years running. It's cute and can produce interesting effects, but doesn't really contribute to the robust functioning of the larger entity.

It is clearly apparent that the Republic is being hacked. Centers of fiscal sanity and common sense are being mapped as social networks after massive data analysis by the NSA -- then being harassed and badgered into being ineffectual by the EPA and IRS.....and then we're told that we had "free and fair elections" that we lost by just a smidge. In NV, it was too much bother to rig most races -- but Reid was important....so his race stands out like a sore thumb.

But elections do matter, and we have to win them. Because the alternative is civil war. We have to play a rigged game with shills, frauds, and hucksters....because the alternative is to step away from the table, draw, and start shooting. And we have to win -- once -- so we can change the game from "anything goes" to something respectable. And we have to do this while knowing that the shills, frauds, and hucksters would put us up against the wall in a heartbeat if we ceased to pretend we were playing a fair game but didn't draw first.

694 Had a nice long conversation with a close LE friend today.  The topic was "how do you stop this?"

The answer is simpler than it might appear.  You build community.  You get to know your neighbors (warning:  you may not like some of them) you get to know your sheriff's dept (why?  Sheriffs are the top of the food chain in the United States in LE... trust me), you even get to know your locals that work for DHS and TSA.

Ballgames.  Cookouts.  Town meetings.  Churches.  Elections.

Unass your chair and get out there and make a difference.  Not saying you need to run for office, but be a positive force in your community... and TRUST ME your community is just begging for a catalyst.  Even if you disagree they'll respect the fact that you give a crap.

Crime drops.  Outsiders (read:  terrorists and MS13 gangbangers) have a tougher time invading a tight-knit community.  A bunch of us on our own are a bunch of targets.  A bunch of us together?  Well... now that's a different story.

You don't have to make everyone your bestest friend.  Just let them know you're there and you give a crap.  It goes a long, long way.

NSA, FBI, NSI... yeah they never figured that part out.

Don't have to tap 800 phones to look at Mikey and say "Shit, who's Ahmed calling?  His wife is in Starbucks so I know that's not her..."

Police up your own community.  Citizenship is a responsibility, not an entitlement.

701 @676 686 My proposal is that we pass an amendment to make Congress come to us. I am serious as a heart attack, this is not a joke. Every state has the responsibility to host Congress for a year, in alphabetical order: Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, etc. Bring all the hookers and lobbyists and hangers-on along for the ride, but at their own expense, of course. Let the states pick the locations -- I see no reason why it couldn't be like the Olympics, with Senate in one place, House in another, committee meetings somewhere else. Think of the economic boost to hosting the biggest show in town, which might cause a state to select an underdeveloped region to host Congress -- for example, Alabama could put Congress in Tuscaloosa (or Mobile if a hurricane has recently come through). California could put Congress in Riverside and/or San Bernardino. It might be more stimulative of turnover than term limits would be.

Yeah, it is, Jay. I don't consider Jews to be a superior race, although I recognize the great contributions they have made to humanity. When anybody starts thinks of themselves as a superior race, it's not good.

And yes, I know about Marx's own anti-Semitism. What I'm saying is leftist Jews ignored that and focused on the internationalist aspect of Communism. Nazism is leftism, but it has a tribal aspect that Communism (in theory, not in practice) does not. For secular Jews who did not want to be part of their own tribe but like everyone else, Communism had an appeal

717 Ayn Rand had it right on this (and I paraphrase loosely): teaching a spirit of "sacrifice" is the gateway drug to going Nazi. I see it my kids school, in which my older son's teacher in particular indoctrinates about "giving back" and "commitment to causes" ad nauseum. My own kids are pretty innoculated with good values, love of country, and a growing familiarity with firearms I might add, but I fear for their generation greatly. Superficially, what could be wrong with "giving back.." and "helping the community"? Really, everything when you think about it, if these are stressed as primary values, especially to the very young. At a young age, kids need to develop their own abilities and learn something, so they may simply become educated, developed human beings, and also (eventually) become useful to themselves, their family, and their community and country in more or less that order. But this drumbeat of "giving back" implies some kind of original sin of undeserved "privilege" that just makes me sick. Not only is it the kissing cousin of white-liberal guilt, but it also trains the young to feel the need to "commit" to something "larger than themselves" while devaluing individual excellence and achievement. On a more fundamental level, this also devalues the individual and the family as the core elements of society. This "give back" mantra is not only destructive to the kids themselves, but I think it is also lowering the barriers to going full totalitarian for a generation. Must get work done now...
